Rebirth

(Spring 1194, England)

1

Richard reunited with Victor and Garfield a few miles south of the village Whitby, on a cliff overlooking the North Sea.

With him followed a retinue of four hundred warriors, which together with Victor and Garfield`s followers added up to about five hundred and fifty men and women.

"You need a shave Richard," joked Victor. "You look like a Scottish clansman."

"Nice to see you too Vic, although I didn't picture you as a monk."

"A monk?" asked Victor, as Garfield snickered. "What are you laughing at green been?" Garfield shrugged, before turning to Richard.

"It is good to see you, Richard, I am glad you are back, but could you tell us why you asked us to meet you at Whitby?"

Victor: "Yeah, how has your journey gone?"

"We are here to pick up supplies from our new benefactor. Lord Kent of Antwerp. He is one of my father's oldest friends, and saved me from King Phillip`s court, as to your question Vic...Scotland was a failure. The clans don't want to fight Morgana. They sin against God and believe she is some kind of deity, and King Phillip wants to see Frances's old enemy reduced to ashes, he doesn't realize the seriousness of Morgana's misrule. The only good thing was meeting Lord Kent. He can't help us officially but has agreed to supply us with rations, armor, and weapons. His ships will meet us at midnight."

"And who are your new friends?" asked Garfield, motioning to the people on the beach below.

"Recruits, I returned to England last autumn, and have spent the winter traveling from London to Birmingham, recruiting loyalists."

"Are you not afraid some will betray us?" Victor asked alarmed.

"Yes, which is why none of them know why we are here. After today they will leave my company, armed with Lord Kent`s weapons, to travel England recruiting more people to our cause, and on the day King Arthur returns, they will rise as one against Morgana."

"You will come back with us?" asked Garfield.

Richard nodded. "Word in London is that rebel lords are preparing an uprising in the north, and Morgana is gathering an army. I want to be with Lord Caulder to prepare our defenses."

"That makes sense," began Victor. "Since you left, Lord Caulder has gathered support from most of the northern lords, but unfortunately only the Lancaster`s dare stand in open rebellion. The rest wants proof that we stand a chance against the usurper," said Victor.

"Still better than what we had a year ago," Garfield said, optimistically.

"Yeah," Richard agreed. "but is it enough?"

"Chin up Rob," comforted Victor. "We only need one victory!"

At midnight four vessels became visible. An hour later rowboats were put on the water, and soon men were unloading equipment. Weapons, armor, money, food, etc.

The admiral, sir Ross, greeted Richard personally.

"It`s a shame France forces the rest of the continent to freeze you out."

Richard: "It is what it is, but we gladly receive any support. Tell Lord Kent, this won't be forgotten."

"I will" promised the knight.

After the supplies had been laid out on the beach. Richard ordered his followers in one long line, as he, Garfield, Victor, and sir Ross divided the wares. By now a wind had begun blowing from the north, and thunderclouds had become visible on the horizon.

"We must get back to our ships," said Ross to Richard. "I wish you the best of luck against Morgana. May God watch over you."

"Safe travels!" Richard jelled back, as sir Ross and his men hurried back to their boats.

"Hurry up!" Victor yelled to the crowd. "You don't want to be stuck on a beach during a storm."

All agreed, and soon all the supplies had been given out. Richard gathered his followers around him and spoke loudly, even as the first droplets began falling, and the wind blew away at his words.

"LISTEN! THIS IS GOODBYE FOR NOW. ORGANIZE YOURSELF IN GROUPS. REMEMBER WHAT I HAVE TAUGHT YOU. RETURN TO YOUR VILLAGES. RECRUIT MORE LOYALISTS. WHEN THE KING RETURN. RISE UP AGAINST THE USURPER!"

It took some moments before the people understood what Richard had said.

"You want us to go home?" asked a woman.

Richard: "To wait for the king's return, to strike from different angles"

"Fuck that," a man yelled out. "We left our lives to follow you. You said you would fight the witch."

´Raven` Richard thought for a moment.

"It has to be like this. It is a good strategical plan" Richard tried to explain, as more angry yells rang out.

"If we go home, they will hang us!"

Fearing a confrontation, Victor motioned for his troops to surround Richard.

A big brute of a man stepped forth.

"Stop bickering," he ordered. "We have the same enemy. You can do as lord Wayne says, and wait for the king, but if you don't have anything to go back to, follow me. Baran Flanders, and I will lead you against Morgana and her spawn!"

A cheer went through the crowd, as the giant marched off. Taking with him over half of Richards, now Baran's followers.

Richard sighed. "I wish them all the best."

The rest did as Richard wished of them, and made fourteen groups. Ranging from two members to twenty-three members. They all came up to Richard, thanked him for his guidance, before seeking cover in the forest, away from the now pouring rain.

"Let`s go" yelled Garfield, already upon his horse.

But Richard hadn't heard it. He pointed towards the horizon. Victor and Garfield, together with some of the soldiers turned, mouth agape.

Richard heard someone whisper "what is that?"

Another suggested "Morgana?"

He hoped not. In reality, Morgana hadn't much support, except a few like the Joker and the traitor. But she was powerful. Immensely so, only Raven had stood up to her. If she had come, they were about to die.

What had caught Richards's attention was a dot in the distant sky. It looked like a falling star, only it swirled back and forth. And from time to time, light flew from it to the ground below.

As the dot came closer, it took on a human shape. "A woman!" someone yelled.

Now they could see that the bright light came from her hands and head, eyes to be exact, and on the ocean floor below, they could see the target of her ire.

"Long-ships!, prepare yourself for battle" ordered Victor, as Garfield shifted into a bear. Ready to face the northern host.

On the sea, the battle between the fleet of long-ships and the burning woman continued. Richard could now see harpoons being fired up towards her. One had already pierced her leg, keeping her from escaping.

"Richard, what are your orders?" asked Victor. He turned to see his men on a line, facing the Vikings.

"Wait, let's see what happens."

Now they could hear voices coming from the ships. They spoke in a language Richard did not understand, but he caught one word. Valkyrie. The woman was right above them now, then a lightning bolt struck her and sent her falling to the beach below.

A cheer rang from the Vikings, and as predators, they began pulling her in.

Garfield, immediately sprang forward and grabbed the chain connected to the harpoon, and began pulling the other way. Victor was right behind him. Meanwhile, Richard yelled for the archers to fire at the long-boats, as he himself ran for the woman.

Garfield and Richard had managed to give the chain a bit of slack, and as the woman lay unconscious beneath him, he managed to thread the harpoon out.

Seeing this, the Viking chief ordered his men to disembark. Sending row after row of Vikings, flinging their axes and swords against Richard's troops.

Richard stood up, pulled his sword out, and together with his friends, met the host head-on.

3

Her leg hurt. What in Odin`s name had happened? From far away she heard the clashing of swords, spears broken on shields. Then she remembered the betrayal. Tor and Komy. He had chased her out of Valhalla, and all the way across Midgard. While she had sold her to the Danish king. Righteous fury blew up in her, as across the battlefield, the sound of a Valkyries war cry sounded.

4

"Pull back! regroup" yelled Richard. The Vikings were a superior force. They reminded him of King Arthurs's royal guard. It was clear they had fought together before. He, Victor, and Garfield were all that kept them back from total domination. Already the ground was littered with the corpses of their fallen brethren, and a small, hidden away part of Richard wished they had ignored the woman.

A scream, filled with fury, anguish, and hate, filled the battlefield. As past them flew a raging firebolt of a woman. She came to her first enemy and punched him into the ocean. The next got a kick to the groin, and so forth. From time to time, she would fire bolts of blinding light, which melted iron and turned sand into glass.

Soon the Vikings were running for their lives, the last one was kicked in the but, landing far out in the ocean. Richard ordered the surviving men to send a flurry of arrows after the fleeing warriors before they all circled curiously around the woman.

Steam rose from her hands, as she stared out upon the ocean. Carefully Richard touched her shoulder. Faster than humanly possible, she grabbed his arm, pulled him to the ground, and took hold of his throat, while aiming a lightning bolt at his head. The men pulled their swords, Victor made ready his iron spears ready and Garfield turned back into a bear.

"Stand down!" yelled Richard.

Other than the rain, everything was silent, as the woman studied his features. Her green eyes met his blue. ´we need her against Morgana, but how can I convince her to join us?` thought Richard. Then she kissed him.
