Prompt: Escaping Testing Hell
Tuesdays were the worst day of the week if you were to ask Peter. Tests always happened on Tuesdays. Assignments worth a lot of points were always due on Tuesdays. May worked a double shift on Tuesdays. There was never anything to watch on TV on Tuesdays either. So yeah, Peter hated Tuesdays. But this particular Tuesday took the prize for Worst Tuesday Ever. Yes the capitalization was necessary.
Peter had not one, not two, but six tests today. Six! He only had seven classes!
So when Peter's phone rang in the middle of his science test, he almost didn't answer it. He was lucky he had the phone on silent this time. He was less lucky it rang during a test, meaning every single student was silent and the slight buzzing could be heard loud and clear.
"Oh thank god!" Abe exclaimed, throwing his pencil down.
"Please hurry and answer it Peter. I need a break before my brain is permanently fried," Allison added. Peter agreed with that statement. Even his brain was starting to turn to mush from all the tests. With his class (and even Mr. Harrington) watching on eagerly, Peter answered the call.
"Hey Happy. You're on speaker."
"I'm on my way to get you. You're being signed out early."
"What for? I still have a few tests left today so unless its important I can't leave," Peter said, although he was mentally begging for an escape.
"One of the new interns messed up your project. We need you to fix it before it blows up," Happy said. To the untrained ear, Happy sounded just as grumpy as he normally did, but Peter could hear the underlying amusement in his voice. No doubt Happy knew exactly how much Peter wanted to escape those tests.
"That's a good reason," Peter said happily.
"No fair Parker! Stay here and suffer with the rest of us," Cindy called out. Laughs rang out from his classmates when Peter shrugged, unapologetic.
"Can't be helped. If it makes you feel better, I still have to do the tests. Just not today," Peter said.
"It does. Thank you," Cindy said. "You shouldn't be exempt from this hell just because you have to stop a little explosion."
"Actually kid, the size of the explosion would damage several floors. Normally we'd send someone else to handle it so there's less risk, but Peter is the only one small enough to fit where the secondary control panel is. He's also the only one smart enough to figure out the problem fast enough before things get ugly," Happy said. Now the class was staring at Peter with worry, likely fearing for his life.
"Jeez Happy. Way to make it sound like a life or death situation," Peter joked, hoping to break the sudden tension in the room.
"As long as Peter can get the machine shut down soon, there won't be anything to worry about," Happy replied.
Just then, the intercom came to life, calling for Peter to come to the office.
"That's for me! I'll be out in a minute Happy!" Peter exclaimed. He waited for Happy's okay before hanging up. Luckily, Peter was now finished with his test, having worked on it during the call, so he just grabbed his backpack and walked to the front to turn it in.
"Mr. Parker. I don't think you should go. If that machine is truly about to explode, then you shouldn't put yourself in danger," Mr. Harrington said, placing a hand on Peter's shoulder.
"I won't be in any danger. I promise. Happy was just being dramatic. The machine in question is just a giant glitter bomb. Happy despises glitter so he's treating it like its a genuine threat to society," Peter explained. Mr. Harrington took a second to digest his words before nodding. Assured that Peter wasn't in any danger now, Mr. Harrington allowed him to leave.
Once safely out of the school, Peter released the breath he was holding. He would need to thank Aunt Nat for those lying lessons. He had never made a glitter bomb in his life (although that is a good idea) and the project that he was working on that the other interns had access to…well let's just say the faster Happy drove the better.
Slow work day! Slow work day! (I say that as customer literally walked into the arcade, forcing me to abandon my computer in the office before I can post this chapter to go over there and monitor them)
But yeah, today is a Wednesday, which is a fairly slow day for the theater. I was able to type up this chapter before I had to do work, but I did have to wait for the people to leave before I could return to my computer. No biggie. Gave me time to work on the next chapter I'm trying to finish. It's not for this fic, but I do intend to work on the next chapter of this one afterwards. Fingers crossed!
I hope you all enjoyed this chapter as well! I'll see you all in the next update!
