Chapter 20: Negativity.
Beacon's hallway
"Ughhhhhhh,... We FINALLY finished the report to Ozpin!" Yang groaned.
"To be fair, going dark like that really worries Miss Goodwitch." Blake told her.
"welp, since class is over, i'm going to my room." Sans said.
"I'm gonna go get ready for the Vytal festival. C'mon." Ruby chimed in.
"Count me in." Yang told her.
"Doesn't anyone find it weird that the Vytal festival is still being held despite the fact that there's a criminal at large. I mean, they lost the woman Ruby fought at the CCT." Blake stated.
"Not so loud!" Ruby whispered loudly.
"She couldn't have gone far. Team Semen probably is hiding somewhere in the city since the restraining order is already sent out. If she's somewhere out there, she will be captured shortly." Weiss told them.
"pfffft!" Sans snorted.
"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Yang barked out her laughter.
"THIS ISN'T FUNNY, YOU TWO! WHAT ARE YOU EVEN LAUGHING AT!?" Weiss yelled.
"T-That *snort* team name,... Pffft! How did you,... *giggle* How did you pronounce it?" Blake asked as she struggled not to laugh but was failing miserably.
"What? Semen. C - M - E - N. How do you think it's pronounced?" Weiss asked innocently.
Again, Sans and Yang were dying laughing. Blake struggled to hide her blush as she giggled uncontrollably. Ruby turned to her partner and corrected her.
"Actually, it's pronounced carmen."
"Really?" Weiss looked at her leader questioningly.
"Yup." Ruby answered, popping the 'p'.
"Huh. That doesn't explain why they're laughing like crazy." Weiss stated.
"Maybe they never got the chance to see you pronouncing something wrong?" Ruby half asked.
"HAHAHAHAHA! OH, WEISS-CREAM! It's such a rare moment to see you being the innocent one!" Yang laughed madly.
"I-It sounded so pure! As if Ruby was the one who said that!" Blake exclaimed.
"W-What!?" Weiss stuttered.
"Hey! I'm the cute one! Back off, Ice Queen." Ruby warned.
"What!?" Weiss screamed confusedly.
"hehehehehe! that one was so out of Character of Weiss." Sans started.
"Don't drag me into this, comedian." Chara said through Ruby's body.
"Awwww,... C'mon, princess. Don't throw a Fit." Yang teased.
Chara smirked.
"Don't you need to burn the Chararies out of your top?" She quipped.
'Oh no.' Ruby said inside her head.
"What?" Yang growled.
"Don't get Yangry at me, fire head. If you try to hit me, your sister gets it." Chara teased.
"Chara,... don't drag Ruby into this. let's all just forget about this and- your phone is ringing." Sans pointed out.
Immediately, Ruby took over the control and pulled out her phone. Seeing the name, Ruby smiled widely and told her team.
"I'll be back, gotta answer this call."
With that, the little reaper bolted away.
With Ruby
Over the line, Ruby could hear a loud-
"Sa-lu-ta-tions!" Penny yelled.
"Hi Penny! I have been doing fine, thank you very much. How 'bout you? Anything exciting happened while I'm gone?" The ginger haired android asked.
"There was a breach, and I think Chara's sister escaped prison." The red Rose stated.
"That's terrible! Was anybody hurt?" The cybernetic girl asked worriedly.
"Some people were hurt, but no one died. And that's a good thing! At the end of the day, we saved everyone. Oh yeah, Sans returned from his mission! So that's cool!" Ruby said.
"It's good to hear. Anyway, I called to tell you that Chara's body is ready." The cyber girl said.
"..." Silence.
"Ruby?" Penny asked.
"I completely forgot about that." The little reaper told her friend.
"It's okay. So, are you free right now by any chance?" The cyber girl asked.
"Yup. I'm free right now, so when can you come by?" The red Rose inquired.
"About,... Now." Penny replied.
"Huh?" The little Rose blurted out as Penny slammed at her with the force of a car.
Ruby landed with a loud 'OOF' as Beowolves ran circles around her head. Once she got a grip of herself, the red reaper saw the ginger picked her up and pulled her into a bone-crushing hug.
'RUBY! GET THIS TIN CAN OFF OF ME!' Chara yelled inside of Ruby's head.
"P-Penny! You're suffocating me!" The red Rose called out as she heard her bones cracking under the pressure of the hug.
"Oops, sorry. I always forget how strong I am." The android apologized as she dropped Ruby back to the ground.
"It's *gasp* it's OK." The little reaper said between gasps.
"So,... Should we get Sans too?" Asked Penny.
As soon as the android asked that, she saw team JNPR and team (R)WBYS barreling towards her.
"Wha-"
"NO TIME TO EXPLAIN!" Jaune immediately cut Ruby off.
"Uhhh,... To my ship!" Declared Penny.
As they ran, Ruby noticed that Jaune picked Sans up by the left armpit as if he weighed nothing and pulled Pyrrha with his right arm. Another thing she questioned, but decided to save for later. Once they got to the schoolyard, Jaune placed Sans on the ground and said.
"OK, get us outta here."
"where to again?" Sans asked.
"Anywhere but here!" Jaune exclaimed.
Everyone looked behind them quizzically. In the distance, a crowd of reporters and paparazzis were swarming to them, and it all made sense.
The presence of a monster in Beacon was really something that made the media go wild. Even more so when Pyrrha Nikos was there as well as the fact that a team of Five was sent to follow him.
Those two sentences without context are so catchy.
Ruby was then teleported to downtown Vale along with her team. Jaune looked around and let out a sigh of relief.
"Ooooooh,... Never take you to be a protective boyfriend, fearless leader." Nora teased.
Jaune immediately facepalmed to hide his embarrassment, Pyrrha blushed but she still snickered.
"Okay, now what just happened?" Weiss questioned.
"Yeah, can you tell us why we were running?" Blake asked.
"Weeeeell,..." Nora started.
"... Jaune noticed that there were too many reporters and paparazzis coming at Pyrrha,..." Ren continued.
"... So he decided to go on protective mode and keep Pyrrha out of trouble." Nora finished.
"..." Everyone remained silent.
After a while, Yang let out a long 'Awwwww', Blake smirked and Ruby giggled. Penny leaned her head to the left in confusion and Sans chuckled.
"What is this 'protection mode' you guys spoke of? Is Jaune an android or something?" Penny asked.
"no, it means that Jaune here was being the protective boyfriend he is." Sans told them.
"I see,... Ah, Sans! Ruby and I were just talking about you!" Penny stated.
"really? were you badmouthing me?" Sans looked at Ruby playfully.
"N-No, we were not! We were talking about,... What were we talking about again?" Ruby asked.
"have you tried scrolling up the text to read the conversation again?" Sans asked.
"Wha-" Ruby blurted out.
"The what now?" Yang looked at Sans questioningly.
"ya know, the text." Sans replied.
"What do you mean by text? Are we being recorded or something?" Ren looked at Sans quizzically.
"Oh, oh! I gotta look good for the camera. Ren! Do my hair!" Nora yelled enthusiastically.
"so you're telling me, that we've been together for close to a year now, and whenever we speak, you guys just don't look up?" Sans asked as he looked up
Everyone then did the same thing and saw,... A large floating black board with white letters, and SANS' FACE.
"What the-?" Pyrrha blurted out..
"How did we never notice that?" Blake asked.
Immediately, the face switched to Pyrrha and then Blake respectively.
"That's so cool!" Ruby exclaimed and as expected her face showed up.
"I wanna try!" Nora shouted.
"Nora, please! You're gonna get us some weird looks!" Ren told her.
"what weird looks? there is literally no one around us." Sans pointed out.
The crew turned around and looked around, only to find no one on the streets. Literally, not a single soul. Except for those shadowy people apparently.
A few seconds went by and a tumbleweed flew past them. Weiss finally spoke up.
"How is there tumbleweed here? We're hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest desert."
"and don't you find it weird that that dude is covered in shadows?" Sans added.
"Yeah, I do recognize that, they're everywhere." Blake said.
Everyone then turned to look at the shadowy figure as it waved at them before disappearing in the dark alley.
"Suuuuper weird." Yang added.
"That person has no pulse. It might be a Grimm. Doesn't anybody find it strange that there's a literal Grimm in the city? Why are there no reports of this?" Penny asked.
"Even weirder. There are no teams coming from other cities. If there had been, we would've at least found one." Ruby chimed in.
"Hmmmm,... I think you guys should investigate this. Ruby, Sans and I will go back to my ship for something Ruby asked me." Penny stated.
"yeah, i don't see why i should come along, bud. it sounds like something between you and Rubes here." Sans questioned.
"No, I wanted to catch up with you on somethings. And Ruby can have her present, so it's a win-win situation." Penny replied.
"eh, i don't see why not." Sans said.
"Excellent! Let us go!" Penny exclaimed.
"want me to bring you guys back to Beacon grounds?" Sans asked.
"Yes." Penny agreed.
With a snap of Sans' finger, they were teleported back to Beacon grounds. The three of them looked around and found out that the reporters were indeed gone. With a relieved sigh, Sans laid flat on his blaster and snoozed.
"phew,... i'm tired." The blue jacket skeleton said.
"But, you didn't do anything?" Penny questioned.
The girl looked at the summoner confusedly, but he was already asleep.
"Uhhh,... Sans? Are you alright?" Penny asked.
"Nah, don't worry. He does this all the time." Ruby replied as she pulled the blaster by the horn.
"C'mon, where's this ship of your's." Ruby asked.
Penny gave her a raised eyebrow and motioned her to follow. Ruby did. After walking for a while, they boarded the airship and asked the pilot to fly them to the main ship. The rest of the trip was quiet.
Some people greeted them with a quick nod, and others just walked past them. When they got to the lab, Penny called out to her father.
"Father! Are you here? Hello?"
"Just a minute." A calm voice came out from behind the door.
"Hold on for a second." Penny told them.
"take your time." Sans waved his left hand lazily.
A few seconds later, doctor Polendina showed himself. He was rounded, a tanned old man with white hair and beard. He was sitting on some sort of chair with four metallic spider legs carrying him.
"Ah, you must be Ruby and Sans." The good doctor stated.
"yup."
"Yes, we are." Sans and Ruby answered respectively.
"Very well. I am doctor Pietro Polendina. This is Penny, you have met. Now Penny, can you be a dear and show Ruby's friend her new body?" Pietro asked his daughter.
"Yes, father!" Penny said with a mock salute before grabbing Ruby by her hand and dragged her along.
After they were gone, Pietro turned to the white haired summoner and smiled weakly. The blue jacket boy could tell that behind that smile lay mixed feelings.
Grievance, happiness, fear, doubt and a bit of anger.
"ya know, we are the only two people here, so you can address the Skeleton in the closet." Sans half joked.
"Yes, I'll get straight into the point then." Doctor Polendina pushed his glasses up as he looked Sans in the eyes, his smile completely gone from his face.
"Where did you find her soul?" The doctor asked.
"i was the one who took it." Sans answered.
"I see,... But why? Why would you do such a thing? And,... Was she with you the whole time? If so, how did you manage to keep her soul?" Doctor Polendina questioned.
Sans let out a sigh before his eyes went hollow. The white haired summoner switched back to his monster form and Pietro's questions were answered.
"Ah,... I see. It's the only reasonable explanation. We too, are at fault for putting monsters there in the first place." Pietro Polendina said.
"you're taking this awfully well. especially since you're her father." The blue hood said.
"Penny did mention the fact that you promised to bring her home. I see that you've seen it through." Calmly, the doctor told him.
"still find it strange that you're not trying to kill me." The skeleton stated.
"Well, I brought you here not just to discuss that. But rather, the fact that you held my daughter's soul. Is this why monsters stayed in the Underground, because you went out to find more souls?" The good doctor asked
"nope." Sans answered curtly.
"No?"
"nope." The blue jacket boy repeated, popping the 'p' this time.
"Then,... Why?" Pietro asked.
"there's nothing left. when i was asked by a friend to protect the eighth human, i agreed. it was strange that i made that promise in the first place, but eh, whatevs. but when the human went on a genocide route, i was force to choose between two ways. one where nothing's right, and one where nothing's left." The white haired summoner said, his voice drenching with sorrow.
He then looked up, meeting doctor Polendina's eyes with his own hollow ones.
"guess which one i picked." Sans said as he narrowed his hollowed eyes.
"I see,... There are no monsters left other than-"
"me, my dad, and the Core protector." The blue hood cut him off.
"According to the information Atlas gathered, the barrier is broken. Did you do this?" The good doctor asked.
"yup. kept the other souls too. i guess i'm gonna hang on to them from now on." The blue jacket boy said.
"A monster with one human soul would gain tremendous power. One shudders at the thought of someone having six of them." Pietro stated.
"*sigh* it's not that bad, actually." Sans replied.
"How does-"
Pietro was cut off by Penny entering the room.
"Father, was I interrupting something?" The cybernetic girl asked.
"No, no dear. Do you need anything?" He asked.
"Yes. I would like to inform Sans that the process is finished." The ginger said.
"ok." The former skeleton replied.
"Come on out, Chara." The mechanical girl said.
From the room, said girl walked out with Ruby behind her. Chara looked almost exactly the same, except for the fact that she looks like she was in her teens, rather than a child. She was wearing a black short sleeved T-shirt under a green sleeveless hoodie along with brown shorts and a pair of shoes.
"Greetings, thank you for the new body, doctor. I owe you one." Chara spoke.
"Please, a chance to do the impossible? How can I pass it up?" Doctor Polendina said as he let out a light chuckle.
"Still I feel the need to repay you." The former princess of monsters stated.
"You don't have to, but I won't say no if you come up with something." Pietro let out a light hearted laugh as he looked at Chara.
"You have my deepest gratitude." The princess spoke as she turned to Sans.
"sup." Sans greeted.
"Hello there, Sans. My, have you grown since the last time I saw you. Though, not much. You're still a babybone." Chara teased.
"heh, guess i can't argue with that." Sans nodded.
"I'd like to take a look at the town I grew up in, if you don't mind." The red eyed girl pleaded.
"Sure, of course we can." Ruby told her.
"Great, then let's get going. First location, downtown Vale." The green hooded girl said.
TIMESKIP
As the three of them walked down the streets of Vale, Ruby and Sans saved before they continued walking. For a few moments, Chara turned to them and called out to Sans and said.
"Sans, do you remember what Frisk had told you from the last run?"
"Chara,... i was getting over that." Sans spoke.
"Just answer the question." The red eyed girl beckoned.
"*sigh* she asked me to forgive her for her sins." Sans answered.
"There. When I was with Frisk, I sensed a wrenching nostalgia, a lost joy, an object of obsession. As if she wasn't the one who did it. All I felt from Frisk was pain, sadness. Yet she continued, why? Was it not her who wanted this, or was it someone who was pulling the strings?" The green hooded girl stated.
"You mean-"
"I do not wish to give you any false hope, Ruby. But, there is a chance, a glimmer of hope that our friend may not be what she seems to be." Chara cut Ruby off.
The red reaper seemed to be beaming with hope, but deflated a bit when Sans asked.
"then who's the megalomaniac?"
Then, the city alarm blared out.
"RED ALERT! RED ALERT! ALL HUNTSMEN RETREAT TO BEACON ACADEMY! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!"
"We'll get to that later, we need to get moving!" The red eyed girl called out.
Ruby whipped her phone out of her pocket and called Yang, but there was no reply from the other side of the line.
"Ruby, let's go! they'll be fine!" Sans reassured.
The red Rose nodded as they teleported back to Beacon dorm, when she noticed a box. She opened the box and a dog fell out of it.
"Zwei!" Ruby cheered as she hugged her dog tightly.
"heh, another one huh? guess you'll make a great friend for Toby." The white haired boy said.
The dog looked at Sans confusedly before panting happily.
"All we need to do now is wait." Chara stated as she sat at the desk.
"And hope." Ruby added.
"Yes, and hope." The red eyed girl responded.
Crash sat quietly at the Core, looking at the sphere attentively. The moment the sphere cracked even a little bit, he would touch his hands on the energy ball and put it back to shape.
Each time, the cracks on his skull would spread out more and more. He has been stopping negativity from flooding onto his creation ever since the gang of misfits left.
The pain and suffering is real, the sadness is real, the emptiness is real. It has always been there. He just simply pushed through it from time to time.
The Core's power slowly sinks into darkness.
Dark, darker yet darker.
The darkness keeps growing.
The shadows cut deeper and deeper.
Only with his ability does the Core remain stable from the negativity. And, with negativity expanding wildly so does the Grimm.
"Ah, there's the stress reliever." Crash beamed.
The void skeleton stood up from his position and teleported out of the Core. At the Underground entrance, the Grimm showed up in doves. Hundreds upon hundreds of them swarmed the entrance.
But most of them are lower class Grimm. He can see a few Goliaths and some Deathstalkers here and there, but that's about it. The skeleton yawned as the wind blew past him, causing his coattail to flap along the breeze.
'Is that all?' He mused.
"ALREADY BACK FOR ROUND TWO, DOC!?" Yelled the void monster, hoping that Merlot would show himself.
Instead, he received silence.
"Welp, that's disappointing. If you're not getting out of the crowd, I'm forcing you out." Said the system crasher.
All of the Grimms then marched to his location, some climbed to the mountain peak while others came running from the dirt path. Crashed raised his left hand up in front of him with his palm facing outwards.
Steadily moving his left hand to his right, the hand covered most of his vision including the Grimms in front of him. The void walker then looked down onto the Grimms that were climbing to his location.
*CUT*
*PASTE*
The Grimms that were running on the dirt path suddenly disappeared and reappeared on the side of the mountain, falling onto the Grimms that were climbing the mountain and fell off the cliff. They piled themselves onto one another and suffocated to death.
"PFFFFT! Heheheheheheh! Can't believe ya Fell for that." The skeleton laughed.
Sharp feathers rained from the sky at the skeleton. Six different types of blasters appeared in circles and blocked the feather spikes from hitting the skeleton.
Two Nevermores circled back for another attack when giant blasters appeared next to each one and bit them in the neck. The blasters then detonated, blowing up the Nevermore's head off it's neck.
A winged reptile Grimm flew straight at the white clad skeleton, but a bone dragon charged straight at it's side, knocking it to the ground. The dragon then shot a white beam out of his mouth and burned the Teryx to ashes.
The Grimms then charged at Crash as he jumped off the cliff onto the back of a Toxic Blaster. The blaster then faced the cliff and shot poisonous gas at the black beasts, covering the whole cliff.
With a snap of his finger, many different types of blaster appeared and blasted at the toxic gas, causing the whole mountain to explode. The explosion burnt every Grimm within the reach of the toxic gas along with the cliff entrance to the Underground.
"Hehe, you fell off the Cliffhanger." The skeleton punned.
The swarm of Grimm under the mountain roared and tried to climb up the cliff again, but the ground split in half, swallowing the Grimm. From the large gap in the ground, emerged a giant slim bony white hand with sharp claws, pulling the rest of it's body out of the crack.
The creature then emerged from the gap.it created. The monster was at least the size of a tower. It's body was so slim that bones can be seen protruding it's ribcage and spine.
The creature had no face at all. The place where it's face was supposed to be was an endlessly hollow socket.
With a roar, an abyssal cloud emitted from it's supposed face and shortly consumed the island of Patch.
"Desperation. Long time no see. How have you been?" Taunted Crash.
Desperation looked at the skeleton and roared, shaking the island with it's vocal alone.
"You won't be harming my creator." The void monster stated.
With a snap of his left hand, many variations of Gaster Blasters appeared in front of the creature.
The giant creature charged at Crash as they engaged in battle.
