Title: A Centipede Wants to Live Peacefully.
Summary: I always wished to escape reality, believing in fairy tales, and immersing myself in books to distract myself from the duties of an adult. I wished to live in a cottage somewhere in a forest, free from the bustle of the city. I could never imagine that I would lose my life and then be reincarnated as a monster. Is my wish possible?
To Alejandro – Thanks so much for the suggestions and I am actually considering some of them for future evolutions. I hope you enjoy the story!
To MEGASQUADRON BLACK KNIGHT – I love these ideas and will maybe use them in the future + give you credit. Thank you so much. C:
To Spacey – Love love your corrections and was glad you point them out. However, Paralysis Fan and Paralysis Attack are actually separate skills when I went on Wikipedia. Paralysis Fang is just a weaker version but your suggestion was noted and I integrated them both. I actually didn't know that about Concealment so that was noted and thank you for taking time out of your day to help. c:
I wake up to the sound of squealing and growling. I activated the motion perception skill and sensed two presences within my periphery. Since it was dark, I could only sense their rough position but I knew that they were caught by the spider webs. I quickly appraised the two monsters that were caught by the well-structured webs.

I was surprised by the new information that was provided by the upgraded appraisal skill. It now shows the status of the monsters now, however, I push it to the back of my mind, considering the condition I'm in. I could attack both of them, possibly dying, or use my skill points to possibly help myself. I choose the latter.
Number of skill points in possession: 1000
Skills Available:
Arithmetic Processing 100
HP Auto-Recovery 100
Paralyzing Evil Eye 100
Magic Power Perception 100
Magic Power Operation 100
Expel 100
Poison Attack 100
Currently, you have 1000 skill points. The skills can be acquired by spending 700 skill points. Do you want to acquire them?
Yes, I thought happily after seeing the HP-Auto Recovery Skill and I could feel the effects immediately with my wounds healing slowly. I glanced at the two monsters that had tired themselves out. I had lots of time since they couldn't get out so I took my time and read the descriptions of the skills I bought and the Concealment skill I got.
[Arithmetic Processing: Enhances mental processing ability]
I didn't understand what use this skill would have or if it was in effect at all. However, I was sure it would come in handy in the future. From my experience in novels or even games, no skill was useless.
[HP Auto-Recovery: HP gradually recovers over time. Can even recover injuries that would not otherwise recover naturally.]
I'm glad for this life-saving skill the most as it saves my life. I could feel the effects and my body was healing itself. The speed wasn't fast but it was enough to take me from the red zone of death and I was grateful. I suspected that when the skill advanced the speed of healing would increase.
[Paralyzing Evil Eye: Deals paralysis attribute damage to anything in the user's field of vision.]
I'm not too sure about this skill since my vision is bad in the first place. However, it could be a last resort or a life-saving skill. Still, I was definitely going to try it out on one of the monsters that are caught in the webs.
[Magic Power Operation: The user can control and wield magic power inside of them. Necessary to use magic.)
[Magic Power Perception: The user can tell the amount of MP other people have, and, by the weak flow of magic power, tell that a battle has taken place. Necessary to use magic.]
I'm finally able to use magic thanks to these two skills. I have two magic skills but was unable to use them for some reason but it turned out I needed these two skills. I had to be able to perceive magic and control it so these two skills were necessary to use magic.
[Expel: Uses MP to launch an object. Higher levels increase the velocity. If the user has the Poison Synthesis skill they can create a ball of Weak Poison, imbue the ball with acidic qualities with Poison Attack or Paralysis Attack, and shoot at an enemy with Expel.]
[Poison Attack: Adds the poison attribute to attacks.]
I nodded inwardly at the description which gave me a lot to work with. So I just needed the Poison Synthesis skill to effectively use this skill. If I had my family here I could see how powerful this could be. However, they were gone now and I didn't know how to bring them back. I had to be stronger.
[Concealment: Hides information when appraised, and can suppress the effects of Intimidation skill.]
I was a little surprised by this skill but if I, a monster, could learn the appraisal skill then other people probably able to. This could help so that my name couldn't be seen or any of my other stats. I closed the menu and checked my HP which was now at least halfway up the HP bar.
I scan my body, finding my lower half was still healing but I would be able to attack. I approached the frog first, something I was familiar with. I knew that it spit acid from its mouth from the numerous encounters with the monster. It saw me approaching slowly, and the struggle against the web ensued. I couldn't see it properly but was ready to dodge in case of an attack.
I didn't want to entangle myself in the webs so I decided to use this time to try out my skills.
"Paralyzing Evil Eye!" I shout in my mind and immediately the frog ceased all movement. I couldn't sense any movement with my motion perception skill.
Now to test the magic skills. I can use certain magic attacks depending on the level of my magic skills. For Shadow Magic, the technique I can use is Dark Shadow which enlarges a shadow. It was pointless for me to use so I used Heretic Magic instead.
[LV1: Discomfort – plants discomfort directly in the soul.]
"Discomfort!" I shout in my mind and a magic circle appeared and shot purple energy at the frog. I could feel my MP drain at the use of magic and become happy. I could finally use magic like those I read in books. I hear a tearing sound, signifying that the web tore and a loud thud followed by a squeal. I rush forward, sinking my fangs in the paralyzed frog and pumping poison inside the frog to finish it off. I ate it slowly, filling my hungry belly, despite the burning and awful taste of the frog.

Lucky!
I was surprised that I am now just earning such a title when I used so much poison already. Perhaps it varied from monster to monster but still. Now that I earned the skills needed for the Expel skill to work I turned to the other monster. I start thinking about the way I could use my new skills, my mind was processing the information I knew a lot faster.
Arithmetic Processing was working, I thought excitedly.
I could combine Poison Synthesis, Poison Attack, Paralysis Attack, Poison Magic and Expel to form a singular attack. I activated poison synthesis forming a weak poison deep within my body. I concentrated, adding poison magic, poison attack, and paralysis attack to the weak poison.
I raised my upper body, aiming at the basilisk that was completed wrapped up in spider webs. I opened my mouth and a magic circle appeared in front of me. I unleash a ball of poison that sailed through the air towards the basilisk. The poison ball made contact, exploding in the process and soaking the basilisk in poison. I couldn't see the effects of the poison properly only knowing that it worked when I rushed forward and delivered a killing blow. I slowly ate the basilisk stuffing my belly.
I sighed, ready to rest again now that my belly was filled but the system voice popped up in my mind.

EVOLVE?!
I got healed completely and I can finally evolve after so much hardship?! I was excited ready to check out my evolutions but I checked the description of the new skill I gained before checking the evolutions.
[Overeating: This allows the user to ingest food beyond normal limitations. In addition, the resultant stamina can be stocked as surplus. However, the user will gain weight proportionate to this. The amount of stamina that can be stocked increases with higher skill levels.]
I didn't use a lot of stamina since I had my family doing my fighting for me but this could come in handy. It works just by eating food. Stamina was pretty important in the novels I read or even games. If you run out of stamina it could mean death for you.
I nodded to myself and decided to check out the evolutions. I was pretty nervous because I could possibly get only useless evolutions or something worse. I knew thinking negatively wouldn't get me anywhere but what happened to me in that explosion put me in a bad state of mind.
I'm the last ferect alive and I die now it was all over for the ferect race. I wasn't human anymore, I'm a ferect now and couldn't allow myself to die like that. It's sad that I care so much about centipede monsters but they were the first...things...to care about me. I just had no idea how to get back such numbers or if I could at all. I pushed the negative thoughts away and looked at the evolution options.
There are multiple choices of evolution. Please choose from the following:
[Deadly Zombie Ferect: This final evolution is a black and purple zombie-like centipede with high stats (7,000) all across the board a fragile body that lets out an extremely toxic poison gas constantly from its rotting body. The poison is so toxic that it can bypass poison resistance skills. The poison is capable of killing monsters or humans that are several levels higher than itself or even wiping out an entire city in minutes. As dangerous as the monster is, its lifespan is very short as its body is rotting constantly. Due to the suppression of the weak ferect species by monsters and humans this evolution has never been seen before.]
I shuddered at the description of this evolution. It was way too dangerous despite its destructive capabilities and high stats. I wanted to be strong but I don't want to die. So automatically, this evolution was definitely a BIG no. I scrolled to the other evolution.
[Queen Ferect: A giant female centipede that has a gold chitin-shaped crown on her head, black chitin plates on her back, and gold legs with the tips black and dipped in poison. The mandibles are golden with black serrated edges that line on the inside of the mandibles to help tear food easily. On both ends of her body are golden claws with small hooks that can deliver poison or pierce hard amour. The Queen Ferect are as large as the Elroe Baladorado, a giant snake that roams the Upper Stratum of the Elroe Labyrinth.
This evolution is forgotten because the female ferects are very rare and usually die before reaching this evolution, and since ferects are weak initially they easily are suppressed by other monsters and humans. This evolution focuses on the queen growing her numbers by laying eggs and commanding her species to gather food or hunt. She is the natural enemy of the Queen Taratect and vice versa, and whenever they meet a battle will ensue, with the Queen Ferect usually losing due to differences in stats, size, and ability.]
I had reservations about this evolution being so large and especially the part about being the natural enemy to the Queen Taratect, which sounds like an evolution to the Small Taratects I had killed, and eaten before. However, I could replenish my species by….laying eggs. It sounded very disconcerting but it was for the greater good of the species, I concluded.
I didn't know how the evolution worked but the description said I was as big as that huge snake I battled before. If I was to evolve in this small space I would be in trouble. I reluctantly left the safety of the webs, careful not to get caught, and skittered across the floor with great speed, avoiding any monsters I sensed while occasionally crashing into rocks.
I eventually found myself by the end of a drop-off that leads to the lower levels of the labyrinth. My antennae moved rapidly and I could sense a lot of movement from the darkness below. I was sure that way strong monsters were down there and I wasn't about to risk my life. I looked up, straining to see in the darkness but it was impossible to see anything.
I choose the only option I had and that was to go up. I crawled up the wall, making sure to move slowly in case I hit and fall to my death. The close I got, I could see the remains of what seemed like a broken hive stuck in a large hole. I crawled across the ceiling and into a hole in the broken hive and found space but it was too small.
"I wish the evolution was smaller!" I thought woefully. I sighed and crawled back down searching the Upper Stratum until I found a place that was the perfect size, had soil, and was damp. I thought it was impossible for me to find such conditions that matched that of centipedes on earth. I quickly crawled in and found a nice spot, curling up to prepare myself for evolution.
Individual Elroe Ferect, Mai Yumehiro evolves into Queen Ferect
I didn't know what to expect from evolution but I sure as hell didn't expect to fall asleep so abruptly. I instantly relaxed and fell asleep. I didn't know how long I slept but I was awoken by the system's voice.

Evolution Skill Bonus: Egg Laying LV1, Detection LV1, Poison Enhancement LV1, Paralysis Enhancement LV1, Piercing Enhancement LV1]
Aside from the system's loud voice and the large number of skills I earned, I was more worried about my body. I clearly see the length of my body rolled up neatly. It felt weird having such a longer body than what I had become used to. Luckily, my body was the perfect width, not too wide or not too small. It was about 38 inches wide, the width of a single bed.
I uncurled myself, moving around to get accustomed to the new length, and testing out my claws and mandibles. After a few minutes of doing that, I checked my skills and title. The Commander title raised the status values of my followers which would make my followers stronger. Leadership was similar to As One so I skipped over that one and went to Cooperation which was more interesting.
[Cooperation: Awarded by Commander. Improves ability to work together. Multiple people with the same magic skill can use Cooperation to work together to complete a single spell.]
I became enlightened, my arithmetic processing skill working overtime. If I could build my numbers back up, then my followers could help me use magic, which in turn can reduce my MP consumption. There were many other ways I could use this skill but I still had one more skill to check out.
[Detection: Detection is a skill that combines all of the main Perception Skills into one.[1] The skills combined are as follows: Magic Power Perception, Physical Perception, Material Perception, Danger Perception, Motion Perception, Heat Perception, Reaction Perception.]
I looked at the description, pleased by gaining such a skill. I'm strong now, I thought happily. I had already begun making plans to rebuild the ferect population when a smartphone suddenly dropped down in the middle of my coil. I wanted to glare at the phone, knowing who was going to be on the other line.
"Hello! It's D again!"
"What do you want? Are you here to tell me some bullshit?!" I thought angrily.
"Nope, on the contrary, I am surprised you made it to such an evolution!"
"What do you mean?" I snapped.
"Your path is going to be so much harder now and I can't wait for the show you will give me!"
"Administrator D, can you kindly fuck off?! I'm sick of your shit. Aren't gods suppose to help people? Why are you trying to torment me? " I angrily ranted
"Haha, such vulgar language!" D laughed, "However, what I'm saying is true so you must be prepared. I have taken quite the liken to you since you entertained me. I promised you a gift didn't I?"
"Yes, you promised me a gift. Now help me out or go your way." I answered.
"The others all got a unique special ability except you so it's your time now, Mai-chan!" D says mysteriously, leaving me nervous.
"Others? There are other reincarnators?" I ask, surprised at such a possibility, but D didn't answer me.
"I created an amazing special ability just for you!" D giggles, "it was catered to your hopes and dreams. I hope it serves you in the future."
My hopes and dreams? How could she know that? Was she reading my mind? Before I could say more, the system went off in my head.

Expands the user's Divinity Field.]
WHAT THE HELL?!
I was stunned to silence – not as I could talk anyway – but the point still remained. I mean, this is all great and wonderful as it perfectly matches my dreams and aesthetic…..but why the hell would you give me such an amazing special skill and not allow me to be a human in the first place?!
"You're smart enough to know that I sent you to this world? Oh wow." D sounded impressed.
"It's not hard to put two and two together!" I screamed, infuriated by the elusive god.
Hehe, well you were never in the plans so I just kind of put you anywhere…..," D giggles, making me fume inside, "I like you so I gave you a gift that will allow you to leave this labyrinth. I mean your previous life was just so pitiful so how could I now allow you to fulfill your dream earlier?"
"You-" I start but she cut me off.
"Less talking, Mai-chan, and get to leaving quickly. Adios!" D laughed before the smartphone disappeared.
Why did she leave so quickly?
BOOM!
The alcove blew up, sending debris everywhere and exposing the cave to the sunlight. I had no time to admire and appreciate the sun I had missed so much. I uncurl my body, readying myself for battle but was paralyzed by what was in front of me. I look at the gargantuan monster in front of me, unconsciously appraising it.

The QUEEN TARATECT?!
MY RIVAL?!
I am having way too much fun with this. I hope you guys don't think I'm making her too powerful so quickly but it is necessary for future chapters. (Considering how many broken skills are in the novel/anime I think it's fair.) Yuno + Queen Taratect are going to be constant enemies for our poor Mai so in future chapters there are going to be a lot of conflicts.
Note: I have no clue what I want for her future evolutions which are going to be about three or two more evolutions before she reaches her semi-human form. Please leave any suggestions in the comments. C:
