Title: A Centipede Wants to Live Peacefully.

Summary: I always wished to escape reality, believing in fairy tales, and immersing myself in books to distract myself from the duties of an adult. I wished to live in a cottage somewhere in a forest, free from the bustle of the city. I could never imagine that I would lose my life and then be reincarnated as a monster. Is my wish possible?

Note: I made a change in the classification/type of the monsters in previous chapters to make things easier for me. Some of the classifications are Plant, Insect, Poison, Earth, Fire, Water, etc. Naturally, there will be basic type advantages against certain monsters and some weak against others. At this point of the story, I'm going to be deriving from canon a bit regarding skills, types, and creating some original ones for different characters. Mai's story will be original but we will eventually merge it back into canon.

I wasn't someone who easily forget something no matter how hard I tried but I forgot how much hard work looking after a baby was. From the moment I brought the child into my burrow, it has been crying periodically and the most fascinating thing about it was that the child was crying crystallized tears. He cried himself to sleep and once he was awake he would cry again.

I looked at the blurry figure man on the ground who was still unconscious even after I healed his injuries with my magic. I, unfortunately, could only see blurry figures and didn't exactly know what both Naofumi and Hayate look like, thanks to my poor vision but using detection was helping a lot. I needed him to wake up so I could get him to feed the baby something. They were both laying on grass beds that my children collected so they wouldn't be laying on the hard ground.

Speaking of apples, I had sent out a few scouts this morning to look for any survivors in the village and surrounding area and found out that the tree I created was burnt to the ground. I wasn't too bummed out by that fact because that tree was an accident and such a tree would be could be the cause of unnecessary feuds. Another reason I sent out scouts was to also cover up any evidence of our tracks. That meant covering all the holes we created in the ground. I suspected that such an event would be investigated by other guilds and I didn't want to have to kill hurt more humans than I should.

A nagging thought that had also been on my mind was to divide my children into factions. The sudden thought came around when I reviewed all I had done since I came to this world. Being in the body of a monster left one with all the time in the world to think and with my advanced mind that was all I did now. I started separating my children into six groups; Scouts, Defenders, Foragers, Healers, Builders, and Warriors. I had no concept of army divisions so this was what I settled for. It didn't matter how I sorted them as they have almost all of my skills.

Now that the issue with the village and the guild were over I renewed my efforts in planning and getting stronger. I realized that the instincts of my monster nature were growing by the day and slowly but surely the human side of me was losing. Besides, I couldn't live peacefully like I wanted to unless the Queen Taratect was dead so it was either her or me.

"Mother, are they our food?"

"Can we eat them, mother?"

"Mother, do you have humans in the burrow?"

"Mother, the small one is noisy!"

"I'm very hungry, mother!"

These were the questions I was receiving constantly from every single one of my children. I had recalled the ones in the labyrinth as I had no reason for them to be in the labyrinth anymore so I quickly made them come back home much to their excitement and my relief. I hadn't lost a single child and that was what mattered to me. I had all two thousand of my children with me but right now they were annoying.

"Everyone, go leave this room for a while. I'll call you when I need you." I snapped at my children who were crowding around me.

"Yes, Mother!" They chorused sadly and left the room with the intent of eating some of the stock of apples.

"Don't eat all of our apples either!" I reminded them, knowing how gluttonous they could be.

"We won't, Mother!"

Satisfied, I turned back to the crying reincarnated baby. It's very likely that this Naofumi has a fully developed mind but still couldn't talk. I helplessly looked at the pile of crystals next to him and sighed inwardly. How can I communicate with him? I suddenly remembered my Fartalk skill. I only used it to communicate with my children but I never projected it towards a human.

If I use this skill it may just work that would mean forging a connection between him and me. I don't think any human can connect with me without me briefly closing the connections to all of my children. It would likely send a human crazy. It was only thanks to my Heresy Nullification that I'm able to do so without any drawback. Either way, I temporarily closed the connection with my children and crawled over to them. As I got closer the child started crying harder, clearly terrified of me. I lifted my upper body and stared at the baby who wore a terrified look in his eyes.

"Naofumi, can you hear me?" I asked, projecting my thoughts to him.

"Am I going crazy? Is that monstrous ugly centipede talking to me?! How does it know my name?!" I heard him say and frowned inwardly.

"It's rude to call someone ugly and monstrous!" I snapped even though it was somewhat true.

"Waah, it's really talking to me!" Naofumi inwardly cried.

"Of course, I'm talking you!" I rolled my eyes inwardly. "I'm a reincarnated person like you." He stopped crying at this and remained quiet for a while before speaking through the link.

"Are you one of my classmates? Have you met anyone else like us? What is the world exactly?" He shot questions one after the other.

"I'm not a classmate of yours but it is likely that all of your classmates are in this world. I was visiting your class to drop off something for one of your classmates and was caught up in the explosion." I explained.

"So you're not a student…?" He questioned.

"I'm not a student," I answered.

"Why are you a monster?" He asked.

"I can't help what I was reincarnated as," I answered patiently.

"Can you explain how this world works? Are we in a game?"

"We are not in a game, sadly. This is our reality now, despite the system we can access." I told him and began to explain everything I learned about this world so far and how the system works. I didn't want to sugarcoat anything for him and told him about some of my near-death experiences. He was quiet for a while before speaking softly through our link.

"My parents in this world only used me for my tears. Some days I barely ate and would remain hungry for an entire day until they remember to feed me. I would get pinched or spanked so I can cry to produce crystals and when I didn't cry they would hit me harder. I saw death for the first time and saw so many dead bodies for the first time. I nearly died yesterday and If it wasn't for Hayate or you, I'm not sure that I wouldn't live to see my first birthday. I never lived such a hard life in my old world but coming to this world has been nothing but torture for me. I would prefer to be bullied in class than be here. I miss my real parents and I miss my home!"

I listened to all of his complaints and completely understood him. he was clearly traumatized by everything that happened and it was sure to affect him in the future. However, I didn't know if I wanted to go back to my old world. Both there and here were equally bad in my opinion and the only difference was that I didn't have so many near-death experiences in my old world. Still, at least I could protect myself here and become strong while in the other world you were suppressed by those with more power and money than you.

"I can't tell you how to feel, Naofumi but as long as you're with me I will protect you. When you get older you'll be able to protect yourself but for now, let me protect you. Not everything in this world will be good but I will try to make it so for you. So don't cry or you'll be drowning in crystals." I told him with a chuckle.

He sniffed. "What about Hayate? What will happen to him?"

"He's just unconscious but I need him to help take care of you. I'm not human so it will be quite difficult to help you when you need it. You're still a baby and need milk, diapers, and other essential stuff."

"I understand…" He replies, "Thank you, um…"

"You can call me Mai."

"Thank you, Mai."

"I'm just glad I was able to do something good for someone." I didn't bother to tell him that I attacked humans before but I was glad I was able to help someone.

"I have many questions Mai but the one that has been bothering me the most was…"

"You can ask me."

"Why do you have so many centipedes around you?" He asked me with a hint of fear.

"Those are my children," I replied immediately.

"Children? Y-You mean you birthed them?!" He screamed.

"Yes, I birthed them and I will be birthing more in the future so you should get used to them. You don't have to worry as they won't attack you unless I command them to or they sense I am in danger." I told him.

"I-I understand…" He said meekly.

I sensed movement next to Naofumi and looked at Hayate who was slowly waking up. I moved away from them as Naofumi asked me another question.

"Where are you going?" He asked with a tinge of fear.

"Hayate is waking up and I don't want to startle him. He might attack me so it is best I move away from him." I said, watching as the man sit up.

"He knows I'm reincarnated!" Naofumi quickly informed me and I was grateful for that piece of information.

Hayate shook his head, not noticing the create ahead of him. He checked his body and noticed his injuries were all healed up. He looked next to him and saw Naofumi babbling and let out a sigh of relief. "I thought I was a goner, little one." He said, picking up the baby. "Now where the hell am I?"

His eyes eventually landed on the centipede and he froze. He reached for his sword but realized it was there. Was this the centipede that killed Mason and his team? The same one Yuno thought he had killed? He took in his surroundings, realizing he was underground and cursed under his breath. He was in its nest and with a child too. Did it kill the person who healed him?

I had already forged a connection with him and could hear his thoughts jump from one conclusion to the next. Before he could attack me I quickly spoke to him to quell his fears. "You don't have to fear me. I'm the one who saved you in the forest and healed your injuries." I spoke to him.

He looked at me with wide eyes. "Did an ugly monster just talk to me?" He asked, looking at me.

"Who are you calling ugly?!" I snapped, wondering if the males in this world were just naturally rude. "Yes, I'm the one speaking to you!"

"How?" He questioned with narrowed eyes while holding Naofumi tightly as he backed away.

"The 'how' doesn't matter just know that you shouldn't fear me. I'm reincarnated just like Naofumi except I'm just not a human, like you both." I told him, hoping to make him see reason.

Hayate eyed me curiously before his body relaxed slightly. "I just have one question. Are you the one the killed Mason and his team? Are you the ones that send the team of explorers insane?"

I recalled the group of adventurers who attacked me and the ones that attacked my children and answered him truthfully. "Yes, I did what I had to do in self-defense. It was either them or me." I couldn't tell what he was thinking but his reply eased my worries.

"I understand but I don't trust you." He spoke loudly.

"That is fine by me. I don't need you to trust me but I need you to take care of Naofumi's needs." I told him, "Even though he is a baby, his mind is fully developed. He saw a lot of death last night and he's going to need a lot of comfort going forward."

Hayate looked at Naofumi curiously before turning to me. "You can communicate with him?"

"Yes, he needs someone to care for him. I can only offer you guys protection but it's unwise for you to live underground. It would be best to live in the forest above or move to another village." I told him.

"What about the village?" He asked with a sigh.

"It's completely burnt to the ground. There are no survivors."

"I guess I can find someone in a nearby village to raise him." Hayate pulled off his headwear, revealing his face, and looked down at Naofumi with a smile.

"I want you both to raise me!" Naofumi suddenly told me through the link. "I don't want to live with another family!"

I chuckled inwardly and relayed the message to Hayate. "It seems that Naofumi has a different idea. He wants us both to raise him."

Hayate's eyes widened as he look a Naofumi who was staring defiantly back at him. "You want us to raise you?" He asked before his lips formed a wry smile, "I don't know...I don't have a clue how to raise a child."

"I can teach you." I said, crawling slowly over to them, "I was once a human and I often babysat other children."

Hayate looked to be considering my offer. "I'll do it," He finally said much to my and Naofumi's relief. "So what next?"

I began to tell him about what a baby would need and that he would need to go to a nearby village to get those things. Most importantly, he needed shelter and food if they were going to live in the forest above which I could easily provide for them.

"I can make a shelter for you with my magic," I told him.

Hayate nodded before looking around. "What do you eat..?" He asked me, his hand resting on his stomach, "I'm hungry and I'm sure Naofumi is too."

"Oh, I can bring some of my perfect apples for you," I told him quickly before cutting of the connections to both him and Naofumi and reconnecting with my children. Soon enough their complaints bombarded her mind.

"Mother, we couldn't hear you!"

"Mother, why did you break our connection like that?!"

"I thought something happened to your mother!"

"I'm alright," I reassured them. I was starting to realize that they were starting to form personalities of their own which was a stark contrast from when I first birthed them. They were still very loyal though so she didn't mind. "The humans are here to stay not but they'll be staying in the forest. If they are in any danger I want you to be able to protect them. Alright?"

"We shall do as mother says!"

"Great, now I hope you all haven't eaten all of the apples. I need only five of you to bring one apple each to where I am. I want the scouting team to stealthily check the forest above and report anything unusual."

After the unexpected attack on the village, I wanted to always keep an eye on the surface in case there was a surprise attack on me. I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind and reconnected back with Hayate and Naofumi.

"My children are bringing some apples for you both so please do not attack them. I think apples might be a bit much for Naofumi but maybe if he eats it a softened form it might be great temporarily. I should be able to get milk from one of the animals above I ask." I explained to him and then to Naofumi.

"Thank you, Mai." Naofumi happily said to me.

"Um, your children? Do monsters mate…?" He asked me and I wanted to attack him right there and then.

"I did not MATE. That's just one of the abilities of my species which is egg-laying…" I muttered, wondering if I should leave him for dead.

Hayate breathed a sigh of relief. "For a second there I thought I would have to deal with a father."

"Anyway, they are here," I said, changing the subject.

Five centipedes crawled into the room with apples in each of their mandibles. Hayate eyed them carefully, his body tensed, as they dropped the apples near them and clamored over to me. They circled me several times before curling around me.

Hayate bit into an apple which he knew to be the perfect apple that his previous boss coveted. He had tasted one before and enjoyed it immensely. He pulled out a hidden knife and slice thin pieces of apple and gave it to Naofumi who greedily sucked on it.

"This apple tastes amazing!" Naofumi told me as he greedily sucked on another piece.

"How many...children do you have?" Hayate asked while feeding Naofumi. His eyes seem to switch between watching my children and Naofumi.

"I have two thousand children." I told them both, enjoying the stunned expression on Hayate's face, "I plan to increase that number as well."

He looked at me strangely as if he wanted to say something but stopped. "Why do you need more?" He asked after some time.

It then hit me that I didn't tell him about my rivalry with Queen Taratect. "It's because of the Queen Taratect. I guess I should've told you this but since I became I monster I sometimes give in to my instincts."

He frowned. "The Queen Taratect is a legendary monster that can easily level mountains."

"Well, that monster is very powerful. As we are both Queens of our species that means there can only be one queen in the labyrinth. We are enemies, and we even fought once but she nearly killed me. However, she let me go before she deliver the killing blow."

"This presents the problem of living here, you know that right?" He said, looking at me with an intense look.

I didn't fail to catch his meaning and wondered how he became so protective over Naofumi this fast. Either way, they both had to leave, much to my displeasure. "Yes, I think it is best you both leave to a nearby village."

"It's best you don't tell him our decision." He added before picking up the other apples. He looked around at the multiple exits before turning me.

"They will guide you to an exit. It's safe for now since I already scouted the surface." I told him before commanding my children to lead him to the exit.

"I'll see you later, Mai!" Naofumi told her through the link as Hayate took him away and she felt sad that he was leaving.

"Be safe, Naofumi," I replied sadly, knowing I might not see him for a while. I cut off the link and reconnected with my children. "I need one of you to follow them both where ever they are going. Don't let anyone see you or sense you! Give me updates of everything going around them!"

I was sad to see them go but this way I would be able to keep track of them both should anything happen. I could probably reach out to them with Fartalk skills but she wanted them to forget about her for now. I recalled the scouts from their task, leaving a few in the forest to keep watch. I sought their comfort after seeing a baby for the first time in a long time. I was really looking forward to helping raise Naofumi but that wasn't possible.

"Mother, are you sad to see the humans go?"

My children asked me many questions as soon as we all settled together in the large room. They were all over the walls, ceiling, and even crawling all over me since I was still bigger than them.

"I'm a little bit sad but I have my children here with me now so I'm not sad anymore," I replied and felt a tinge of happiness from them all through the link. I thought a would go to sleep with an empty feeling in my heart but my children somehow filled that for me.

One week passed I kept myself busy by doing daily tasks. The first one was laying more eggs to increase the number of my children. The nursery was packed with eggs which I left some of the centipedes from the Defenders division to guard them. All of the tunnels were guarded by the centipedes from the defender's division.

Secondly, I got some of the builders to close up the tunnels leading to the village. I wanted to remove any trace of my presence. The burrow was situated deep in the earth with one main entrance that was hidden by trees, grass, and bramble. We had at least six emergency exits that led to various parts of the forest and one secret entrance into the labyrinth. Their biggest undertaking was building a personal room for me to rest in and safely evolve. It was below the main chamber and constantly guarded.

Thirdly, I had the scouts spread out strategically in the forest above where the forest animals would help out when needed. The birds were especially vital in the entire operation as they had a better view of everything. I placed a smaller team in the labyrinth to keep check of any changes there and to be mostly on the lookout for that ugly spider.

The foragers were in charge of gathering food for our storage room and maintaining the food levels. The healers were in charge of protecting and healing both the forest and animals should any be injured. I chose not to revive the giant tree but instead revive the surrounding fruit trees that were normal.

As for the warriors, they were once against traversing the labyrinth but this time I only sent five hundred of them there to increase my level and skills while the others were stationed here as standby Together there were steadily increasing my experience points only on the first level of the labyrinth. It seems monsters spawned randomly after a day or two so they were able to occupy the first level completely.

I had successfully created a network web that relayed all information back to me to prepare for the worst. I felt proud of myself and was in a good mood. But I had another task to finish before I was completely done. I had yet to check the system since the battle against the elves I already got the notification that I reached LV10 which was the max level and I was ready for evolution. I opened the system and the notifications went off one after the other. I focused on what skills had increased in level.

I wasn't surprised at the massive skill upgrade since I didn't check the system for a good while. I navigated the system to see if there any new useful skills I could spend my points on.

Heatless 100

Silence 100

Without the prompt from the system I immediately bought all of the skills since they were the only ones there. The skills were greater for me and my children because our main strategy for attacking is ambushing unsuspecting opponents. With this, I can hopefully be undetected by enemies, especially the Queen Taratect.

I moved on to the final task for the day and that was viewing my evolution options. I anticipated this moment for a very long time and it was finally here. I quickly opened the evolution tab and a list came up. There were 3 evolution options available for her.

[Flowering Brood Empress: This insect/plant type evolution is considered to be one of the rarest and beautiful monsters. Its upper body becomes a human female with a long green antenna on its head and six leafy legs protruding from her back. The lower half of her body becomes a large blooming yellow flower with large green leaves and vines equipped with tiny spines. Underneath the leaves grew what looks like a huge bulb with a large mouth like that of a carnivorous plant with a mouth with rows of teeth and retractable mandibles reminiscent of its previous centipede evolution on the inside. It sacrifices its movement, becoming immobile in the place it evolves due to growing roots, and it also sacrifices its poison type to become closer to nature. This monster requires sunlight and water like other plants to recover its energy but eating other monsters can also replenish energy. It lures enemies with a sweet scent from its body before ambushing it. Furthermore, this monster is extremely flirty and fertile in nature – often trapping human males to use them sexually before eating them once they serve their purpose However, they are also very gentle to their children whom they birth and birth up to 1000 once every six months. It has a deep rivalry with Queen Taratect. The skill, Fertile Nature is required to access this evolution.]

[Queen Aricius: This final evolution is an insect/earth type evolution that becomes a slow-moving gargantuan monstrosity of complete metal because of the minerals and energy is absorbed from the earth. Its body is at least 200 ft long and 40 ft wide composed completely of black and gold metal. It sacrifices its egg-laying ability and agility, poison type to gain its metal body. Once this evolution moves underground it creates tremors and earthquakes due to its sheer size. However, moving requires a lot of energy so this monster simply sleeps on the earth until it is awakened or provoked which sends it on a violent rampage and its strength is enough to level kingdoms or mountains. It is said that its head can reach the clouds. It has a deep rivalry with the Queen Taratect.]

[Matriarch Rafflesia: This insect/poison evolution for the Queen Ferect is very violent in nature and would lash out at its allies if angry. The Matriarch Rafflesia is a beautiful ruby-colored centipede with yellow spots. Its many legs are forest green and adorned with tiny black spots. Its colors help it camouflage easily in forested areas. This evolution sacrifices its size and egg-laying ability to increase the deadliness of its poison. The poison of this evolution gains a parasitic quality that once a victim is infected they became a host of the parasite will no longer have free will and is completely under the control of the user. However, the host would die in just a few days due to the parasite being so deadly. It has a deep rivalry with Queen Taratect. The skill Toxic Brew is required to access this evolution.]

[Warning: Successfully choosing one of these unique evolutions completely removes incompatible skills from the user.]

I carefully read through the evolution descriptions and was completely stuck on what to choose. There were both good and bad attributes of them all. I had to make a decision but I didn't know what to do. Not to mention the warning the system gave me about skills being removed. I just know I had to make a decision before nightfall as it takes a long time to evolve.

Ariel was in a pickle, to be honest. Between dealing with that Spider menace that hacked the mental facilities of one of her Queen Taratect and the unexpected rise of a Queen Ferect who killed an entire nest of her brood. She didn't know which one made her angry the most. She almost killed that damned spider that called itself Kumoko but it survived somehow.

She had to make a decision to either deal with the more powerful threat aka Kumoko or deal with the Queen Ferect that breeds like a slut in heat. She roared and slammed her fist into the wall of her room and completely decimated it.

"I'll deal with Kumoko." Ariel made her decision as it was easy to kill Queen Ferect now that she was at her weakest. She would let one of her Queen Taratect eliminate the small threat in the Labyrinth. She couldn't be bothered to deal with it herself.

.

These evolutions were fun to create and I love the idea that each evolution requires a sacrifice If she chooses one she doesn't know what skills she will lose. I did this to stop her from becoming TOO OP too soon. While she will gain a lot of strength for these evolutions there will be skills she will lose that makes her adapt to different battle styles. The new typings I added aren't something in the novel or anime but have been added to make battles fair. Flowering Brood Mother is derived from the Centipede Plant mostly but with a twist. Matriarch Rafflesia is based on the plant but mostly on its parasites.
