Title: A Centipede Wants to Live Peacefully.
Summary: I always wished to escape reality, believing in fairy tales, and immersing myself in books to distract myself from the duties of an adult. I wished to live in a cottage somewhere in a forest, free from the bustle of the city. I could never imagine that I would lose my life and then be reincarnated as a monster. Is my wish possible?
Note: This chapter was really fun to write. Hope you guys enjoy this one. Again, thank you guys for even reading this. I started this story on a whim but your reviews and kind words actually pushed me to invest a lot of time into it.
A long time had passed since that fateful battle in glade and I say a long time passed because I didn't know exactly how many days passed since then. From sunrise to sunset, the days just blended together in my boredom, and I lost track in the process while either eating all day or training. It was no wonder my Satiation skill was now LV7. I was currently inside my own flower, avoiding being wet from the heavy rain. The raindrops pelting against my flowers put me in a state of deep relaxation but I was still anxious.
I had yet to see any sign of Hayate and the child I sent to watch them stopped replying. There was no way I could know what he was doing. I suspected the worse happened to it but I suppressed that feeling in my heart. I wondered if the soldiers even delivered the message for me and it only made me despise the idea of being rooted here even more.
I waited for him every day to show up but he never did so I could only hope he was alright. I could possibly connect with him telepathically but the human part of me wanted me to respect his privacy. I didn't even know why I was doing this and making things harder for myself when I already disrespected other people's privacy before. Yet, I couldn't just bring myself to do it.
In preparation for the battle against the queen, I sowed my seedlings to bring forth another batch of children into the world. They were planted all throughout the forest, guarded heavily by their brothers. They were in the budding stage and needed a little more time to fully bloom. Once they were fully bloomed I would have approximately 2999 children in total since a single one was missing. I hardened my heart for the inevitable moment when some are lost in the battle.
However, I didn't merely lay around and eat but also spent some time practicing my skills, figuring out the limitations of my body, and bought new skills; Longevity, Magic Hoard, Earth Magic, Spatial Magic, and Naming. The first skills were to boost my hp and mp and earth magic was self-explanatory. The other two were a little more complicated. I opened the system, reading the description of the last two skills.
The skill wasn't exactly complicated to do but the actual naming part was the difficult part. The task of naming every single one of them wasn't one I wanted to tackle without a proper naming system. But the skill itself fits my skill set perfectly since naming a living thing either raises its stats or improves its form. I didn't understand what improves its form meant but I had yet to try it out.
Lastly, spatial magic was heavy on mp usage and it was complicated to figure out even with my high-speed processing skill. When I first activated the skill a small cube made up of green lines and numbers appeared. I didn't understand the purpose of the cube but the numbers may have meant something. If I could understand what the numbers meant then maybe I would be able to actually use the skill.
Sadly, like in the olden days, I had to go back to the basics and use my skills every day and make my children do the same to increase their level. With the combination of compatible skills together, I was able to create a comfortable synergy with them. Similarly, I practiced my cooperation skill with my children once, and with all of us using wind magic at the same time we created massive bullets of air that almost destroyed the forest, much to my relief.
I didn't risk sending my children into the labyrinth, predicting an attack on them. So, thankfully I was able to increase the level of several of my skills through using them repeatedly, gaining new ones in the process, and increasing my own level. I rarely open the system nowadays, preferring to just train than look at the system every minute, and when I did multiple notifications popped up.

I was as prepared as I can be but now truly knowing when the attack would happen had me on edge. I folded my arms, leaning back, feeling smooth petal against my back. I closed my eyes, enjoying the rhythm of the rain. I was so eager to see Naofumi again, or if I ever see him again. I felt like a worried mother constantly and it didn't just apply to my children or Naofumi but also to Julius.
I couldn't forget him as his crying face would always appear in my mind occasionally. I wondered how he was doing or why he was with those soldiers that day. Perhaps, they were escorting him somewhere I hope. Although I'm a monster, I prayed for his safety, hoping he doesn't encounter any more danger with that foolish captain of his. Before I knew it, the rain had lulled me to sleep.
The next morning, eyes snapped open in fear, sensing the massive magical power outside. "How did I not sense it?!" I emerged from my flower, several large thick vines erupting from the ground as my flower bloomed, and my children swarming from underground battle-ready. I expected to see the Queen Taratect but instead, my eyes landed on a man wearing black armor. I could hear my heart beating rapidly, the magic emanating from him making my body tremble. I dare not attack him foolishly.
His red eyes roamed my body curiously, making me feel self-conscious all of a sudden. We just stared at each other and I swallowed hard, trying to calm my beating heart.
Proficiency has reached the required level. Skill [Fear Resistance LV2] has now become [Fear Resistance LV3]
"You're an interesting reincarnator," He said softly, his voice echoing in my mind, "to think D would revive such a wretched race." He suddenly said in my mind.
I frowned. "What do you mean by that?!" I crossed my arms, mostly to stop my trembling hands.
"You may call me, Güliedistodiez," He said casually, his eyes narrowing, "You reincarnated ones are a possible threat to the planet but I cannot interfere. You should remain here for the rest of your days."
"What the hell are you talking about?" I snapped, glaring at him. Who was this person? I was simmering with anger but couldn't act.
He ignored me, turning his back to me. "You don't have much time left either way. The Demon Lord doesn't take kindly to direct threats and is coming for you soon, not personally, of course."
"So you're working for the demon lord too?!" I fumed, "What did I ever do to her?"
He looked at me with an uninterested look. "Exist." He simply said before disappearing.
I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding, the vines going back into the ground. I could hear my children asking me questions but I couldn't focus on them. "Because I exist is why the Demon Lord hates me?" I questioned, "Did my species and hers have such a long history of bad blood?"
It was clear for me now that the demon lord was the one who suppressed the elroe ferects, never allowing them to really flourish, and now I became a thorn in her side. The pressure was heavy on my mind with another person confirming the inevitable. I could feel tears forming and quickly blinked them away. The concept of peace seemed so foreign to me now that I already accepted that this will be my life from now on. I will never have peace unless either I or the demon lord is dead.
I abandoned all thoughts, preparing myself mentally to connect with Hayate through a mental link, but then I felt someone entering the forest. He was finally here after all this time. I unconsciously fixed my hair, forgetting my encounter with the strange powerful man. as I sensed him moving towards my position quickly. In a few minutes, he burst into the glade wearing leather armor and carrying a bag.
I found myself smiling as I could see his face for the first time and he was quite handsome. I made sure to keep my natural instincts under wraps as he got nearer. I connected with him mentally. "You're finally here."
He dropped the bag on the ground, looking around curiously at the glade where my children were currently moving around, doing their tasks. His eyes lingered on the large bulbs spread throughout the glade but he said nothing."So you have gotten stronger." He said, looking at my body with slight interest.
I cleared my throat. "Yes, I have..."
He folded his arms, narrowing his eyes at me. "Imagine the surprise I got when two soldiers came to town three months ago asking for someone by a name I don't go by anymore and why did you send one of your 'children' to spy on me?" He said sardonically with tired eyes.
"I'm sorry," I replied softly. I still couldn't believe three months had passed already. "What happened to my child?"
"It was killed." He replied, shocking me but he quickly added, "It was caught stealing fruits in the market and the guards were in charge of capturing and killing it. An elf that was in the village killed it. I'm sorry."
"No, it was my fault," I replied, it was dumb of me to think fruits would be growing everywhere and I neglected that child. I felt pain in my heart but knowing it was an elf made me a little angry. "How is Naofumi?" I changed the topic, suppressing the pain I felt losing another child.
"He wasn't pleased by our agreement but he is contented now. He is able to crawl around now. Maybe it's because of his special conditions." Hayate said with a smile, "I love him like my own but raising a child is hard. I managed to get a home for us and I'm working as a local guard to provide for him. He's home with a friend being looked after."
I could see the happiness on his face when he talked about Naofumi and felt happy for him as well because I know that joy of his. "Is your friend trustworthy?" I asked him, still worried about Naofumi's well-being.
Hayate grinned. "She's very truth-worthy and has been helping me settle since I moved to the village. She loves him like her own as well."
For some reason, I felt bitter. Maybe it's because I wanted to help raise Naofumi but I couldn't afford to be like this when he found another person who was really caring for him. "That's great." I replied before hesitantly asking, "Can I connect to you telepathically when you're in the village…? I just want to talk to Naofumi or you...sometimes.."
Hayate immediately shook his head, avoiding my eyes, and said, "I'm sorry, I don't feel comfortable with that. I mean..."
"Oh," I said awkwardly, feeling embarrassed because of his rejection. I looked away from him, wanting to avoid his eyes. I remember that he didn't trust me. He couldn't trust a monster.
"At any rate, these are the stuff you wanted. I don't think we'll be able to meet again like this. I've been very busy and took time off from work to come here. It takes at least two days on foot to get here from Falkirk which is inconvenient at the moment."
I looked at the bag on the ground and then back at him. The items inside weren't really of interest to me anymore. I wanted to respect his wishes. "I understand. Thank you, for even coming here. Have a safe trip home and tell Naofumi that I'll always be thinking of him."
Hayate gave me a nod before leaving. I watched him go with a heavy heart and when he disappeared I allowed the tears I was holding back to fall. I didn't even know why I was crying, to be honest. Naofumi was with a good family now and I was a monster.
"That's right," I thought, wiping away my tears with a bitter smile, "I'm a monster. I'm not human even if my torso said otherwise. What use were tears?" There was no way I could take care of a human child and there was no way a human would fully trust me. My confrontation with the soldiers was proof that I was just a monster to be killed.
"Mother, are you sad?"
"Did that human make you sad, Mother?"
"Should we eat him, Mother?"
My children crawled around me as if sensing my sadness. One of them crawled onto my shoulder and I rest my hand on his head, rubbing it slightly. "Mother is sorry, we lost one of your brothers, and it's my fault."
"Mother, we know you care for us!" They all chorused together in their tiny voices.
I smiled, clearing my mind and pushing my encounter with Hayate to the back of my mind. I looked down at the bag, controlling a single vine to lift it towards me. I opened the bag and found a few items I asked for. They were pointless to me right now but I wanted to use them for one last time.
In the bag were a mirror, a brush, and small treats. I reached in the bag for the mirror, wrapping my hand around the handle, and bringing it to my face. I touched my face slowly, burning the image in my mind. I never expected to see a face I recognized all too well. The familiar straight black hair and dark eyes brought some comfort to me. It was my face from when I was in the other world but a more youthful, and beautiful version of me, but for me nonetheless with slight differences. It reminded me of my days in college.
I put the mirror back in the bag and picked up the brush next. I ran it through my hair slowly, feeling some contentment, feeling human from the simple act. After using it a few more times, I took up the bag of treats next. I popped one of the doughy treats in my mouth and immediately had the feeling of bliss. It's been so long since I had a pastry and I quickly ate the rest with gusto.
However, now that I was done, the small glimmer of happiness I had disappeared and reality settled back in. I looked at the bag once more before holding it out. "Take this away," I told one of my children.
I sighed, looking up at the sky. I was mentally preparing myself and hardening my heart. In this battle, I had to truly become a monster. I had to forget the human side of me and truly embrace what I was now. The Demon Lord was ruthless to me and I would be ruthless in return.
Warning: Switching POVs between Mai and her children from this point but you'll be able to tell the difference though.

The attack came three days later in the dark of night. The ever-present storm thundering above and the rain falling like tears from a weeping widow. The wind was whistling through the forest like a nymph blowing her war trumpet. The trees were shouting for the danger that encroached on their lands. The air was tense, heavy with anticipation, as the lightning flashed in the dark clouds.
War.
Could it really be called a war? It wasn't on a global scale nor was it a war to end something like poverty. It was just good ole bad blood that I ended up in just by being reincarnated. I inhaled deeply, hearing the slow beating of my heart, signifying my calmness. I had sensed them the moment they entered the forest which was now my domain. They were like silent assassins of the night but they couldn't escape my notice once they entered my domain.
I would be lying if I said I felt nothing at this moment but I pushed back the fear that was ever-growing in the pit of my stomach. I had to become a monster. No, I'm the monster. I closed my eyes, merging my consciousness with nature, and combining it with the detection skill. They were coming from all sides of the forest, surrounding me. They were countless taratects swarming from every direction, outnumbering us by a few hundred, and among them were different variants, much stronger than the ones I know.
The Poison Taratect, one of the medium-size ones and the most common through their spider army. Judging by its name it probably had potent poison and its skillset was entirely based on poison.
The Greater Taratect, one of the large hulking ones, and I could only sense about twenty of them in the army. Its large and bulky physique would probably allow it to fight with us head-on, charging forward without stopping. It was the tank of their army.
Finally, the Arch Taratect, the largest of them all but smaller than the Queen Taratect. There was only one but its power was vastly superior to the others. However, it had yet to move.
The Queen Taratect herself nor the Demon Lord had shown up yet but I was thoroughly prepared and as ready as I can be. There was nothing to be said to my children, as they already knew what was to be done. They were here and coming fast so it was time to go on the offensive right away.
If I was alone, maybe I would have been long dead, but the difference between me and the Queen Taratect was that my strength is increased with more children on my side. They grow stronger with me and in return, they make me stronger. It was an equal exchange of power while the Queen Taratect, her children, were all singular entities and their strength was singular.
"Sleep Pollen!" I ordered my children, my eyes still closed. I was keeping track of their fast movements. The larger ones were moving fast, tearing through the forest with their large forms. I had tested out my pollen on the forest animals and knew that I only had one minute before they would wake up.
My children shook their bodies, the leaves, and flowers on their backs shaking, releasing shimmering golden pollen into the air. The pollen caught natural wind from the storm, soaring through the air before spreading throughout the forest. The pollen hit the army head-on, sending the Poison Taratects to sleep, leaving only the Greater Taratects still charging towards me.
"Go!" I ordered my children
With my mother's orders, I sprinted quickly into the forest, jumping into the air so the leafy protrusions on my head can catch the wind. My brothers were gliding through the air at my side, moving left to right, dodging the trees. The red eyes of the sleeping spiders gleaming in the dark shot excitement into my core. I started firing air bullets from my mouth into the army, aiming for their heads and the impact of the air crushing them
BOOM!
I swerved through the earthen spikes the shot from the ground, killing the poison taratects instantly. I made a left turn through the trees, circling back around and landing on a tree branch. Several vines shot out from the trees, entangling the sleeping spiders tightly. I imbued them with wind and earth magic, making the vines thicker and harder, resulting in them being crushed.
I was finally serving my true purpose, to kill and die for my mother. I sensed it before it was too late, a large shadow above me coming quickly. I jumped off of the branch to escape but the large body came down on me, hard, and my vision turned black.
There were five of us, gliding towards a Greater Taratect that was charging at us, knocking away the threes in its path. I cooperated with my brothers using plant magic. The trees grew rapidly and several vines shot out wrapping around the legs and body of the large spider and trapping it in place. It started trashing around, shooting globs of poison at us that we met head-on thanks to our nullification skill.
We summoned an earthen spear – imbuing it with wind magic – from directly beneath the thrashing behemoth. The spear shot up in a blink of an eye, piercing its hard body, earning a loud shriek before it went still. We moved on to the smaller spiders, firing off-air bullets rapidly, taking out as much as we could. We landed directly on top of the sleeping army, imbuing our mandible with wind magic to easily pierce their bodies.

"The Poison Taratects should be waking up soon. Use more Sleep Pollen to assist your bothers!" I commanded the remaining children with me. I could hear the system notifications going off in my head but I ignored it. I couldn't afford to lose focus in such an important battle.
A greater taratects broke into my glade charging at me from the front with its hulking body and pointed legs. It jumped at me but I was ready. All six appendages on my back shot out, each one imbued with wind, earth, and plant magic. It shrieked as its body was pierced right through. I retracted them, its body falling to the ground. Immediately, my children swarmed onto its body, eating it without remorse to regain energy.
BOOM!
Three greater taratects burst into the glade from different directions. They shot large globs of poison from their mouth, aiming directly for me. I let the poison coat my entire body but I felt nothing due to my status condition nullification. My children charge at one of them, clinging to its large body and bringing it down to the ground with their numbers.
The other two, realizing their poison had no effect, jumped at me. I summoned large vines to grab them from the air and slam them in the ground. I cooperated with my children, imbuing all of the flower petals with earth and wind magic before raising my hands to the darkened sky. The petals hardened from the earth magic shot into the sky before raining down on the greater taratects, cutting into their body, and killing them.
I narrowed my eyes, my lips set in a grim line as I look in the direction of the forest where the Arch Taratect stood waiting. "Come!" I snarled.
The Arch Taratect let out a loud screech as if hearing my words, its thundering shriek echoing throughout the entire forest. My mind was speeding through predictions, the different possibilities of what the screech meant or what attack would come next. I could never imagine what would happen next. Spider webs from all over the forest shot up into the air, coating the trees entirely.
"Mother, the webs are stopping the pollen from spreading!"
"I'm caught in their trap, Mother!"
The voices of my children echoed in my head repeatedly. "Come on, Mai!" I screamed inwardly before a thought came to me, "Use your wind or earth magic to break free!"
"It won't work, Mother!"
"It's too strong!"
"Mother, I'm sorry-"
The voices of my children dying were sending me to my breaking point and tears were already falling from my eyes. I said I would harden my heart but I can't do it. I was losing a lot of them now.
"No Mai!" I slapped my cheeks multiple times, snapping myself out of my emotional state. I closed my eyes, noting the positions of all of my children and the enemies. I'm free them all in one shot. "Everyone, use Green Surge on the trees!" I say to all of my children.
"Yes, Mother!" They all chorused.
I spread my arms outward, gathering all of the magic power I needed. A swarm of spiders was quickly closing into the glade, only seconds away. "Green Surge!" We released our magic power outward, spreading throughout the forest.
The forest groaned and moaned before the trees started rapidly growing towards the sky. The vast forest grew in an instant, giving birth to giant trees that even towered the Arch Taratect. Because the trees grew so rapidly it tore apart the spider webs, releasing anyone caught in them.
The terrain was completely changed now with taller and sturdier trees. The rain was partially blocked out by the plethora of leaves that blocked out the night sky within the forest. The wind was free to blow through the forest more unadulterated, allowing my children to glide freely in the air.
I panted slightly, my hair falling in my face, as the heavy rain poured. I was able to free my children by turning the trees into much, much larger ones, but this presented the problem of the spiders being able to move more freely to attack now. I looked all around me, they were crawling across the bark of the trees, jumping from tree to tree while fighting against my children.
The battle was raging around me and it killed me not being able to move. The Greater Taratects were charging through the forest freely now, their target.
Me.
However, I still had more tricks up my sleeve. "Join your brothers and fight!" I commanded the rest of them, leaving me alone. "Let's turn the tide! Use Hypnosis on the Greater Taratects"
"Yes, Mother!"
I looked at the hulking spider with glowing red eyes, hypnotizing it with my heretic magic. I watch as it turns on its allies, killing them with its huge body. My children followed suit, aiming for the large spiders, turning the rest of them against each other.
My head snapped upwards, seeing multiple spider webs careening towards me. I retreated into my flower and summoned an earthen sphere around me – combining earth magic and shelter - encasing me completely and protecting me from the webs.
I was now in complete darkness, surrounded by earth but I could still see them in my mind's eye thanks to detection and being one with nature. I panted tiredly. "I needed energy, fast, and the only way to do that was to EAT," I grimaced, placing my palms on the earth wall.
The earth sphere started to bubble on the outside like melting lava. Suddenly, earth spears shot out like bullets, tearing apart the webs on the surface, their accuracy true. The spears easily pick off the spiders one by one that was perched in the trees and in the glade until the sphere crumbled apart. I emerged from my flower angrily, multiple vines lashing out at the dead and living poison taratects, choking them and dragging them towards my second mouth to eat.
"Sleep Pollen!" I commanded the rest of my children, as my second mouth started to swallow the bodies, giving me energy. "I'll finish off the Greater Taratects!"
I threw my hands out, summoning several large vines that were imbued with earth, wind, and plant magic to make them tougher, thicker, and faster. The vines wrapped around the large spiders that were fighting each other. I clenched my jaws, spending more magic power to squeeze the monster to death.
I glided through the air, dodging spider webs being shot at me, spreading sleep pollen through the air. I landed on a tree, launching myself at a poison taratect and wrapping my body around it, and digging my wind-infused fangs into its head. I jumped off the tree, gaining a foothold with the wind once more, diving bombing towards a swarm and shooting air bullets into it.
I saw one of my brothers get caught mid-air by a spider web in the shape of a ball, sending him into the swarm crashing. He was entangled in the web and they immediately lunged at him. I glided over their heads, shaking pollen from my body onto them before they could kill him. Suddenly, I felt a body on my back, bringing me to the ground before I saw darkness.
The battle went on nonstop into the morning when the storm had finally passed. I was panting tiredly, looking at the dead bodies of spiders and my children surrounding me. I lost many of my children in the battle and now only 300 remained at my side but they were still enough to carry out my plan against the queen. Still, I managed to wipe out their army without sustaining any damage to myself but I already ran through the surplus of my stamina and half of my magic power.

The Arch Taratect didn't make its move the entire night as the storm passed. It was now morning and the sunlight hit my skin directly, my body absorbing its ultraviolet power. I wanted to smile but my entire focus was on the Arch Taratect. I recalled my children, all of them regrouping in the glade, waiting.
"Why are you not coming?!" I screamed inwardly, narrowing my eyes in its direction. I couldn't see it from here but I could feel it.
As if hearing my words, it attacked, vanishing from its position in the forest. Thanks to detection, I sensed a distortion in space a good distance behind me. However, I sensed several other distortions deep in the forest coming from in front of me. It was her. It was my enemy ane she brought more minions.
The Queen Taratect.
"You've finally come!" I thought.
We're finally getting into some of the battles! This chapter was hard to write but I enjoyed it. As for evolutions, Mai has three more to go before she is fully evolved. Compared to Kumoko who evolved six times. I already have the names for all three of them and the description already written for the next evolution. Our little prince centipedes have an evolution line too but with a twist.
