A/N: Just a quick note, in this chapter I did try to play around with POV's, rather than just Dean's. I'm not sure I like how it went, but… Let me know what you guys think
Without further ado, enjoy!
"Dean."
"Hm." Dean hummed tiredly, still asleep.
"Deeeeaaaan." The voice continued in a soft, comforting tone.
Dean could feel a hand playing with his hair, gently moving it out of his face.
"Hm?" Was all he managed again.
"You're drooling. What are you dreaming of, love?" The voice asked.
"Pie." Dean mumbled simply.
The owner of the voice chuckled, still playing with his hair, "Is that all?"
"Mhm." Dean sighed.
There was a chuckle, and the hand left his hair, and Dean was finally able to return to his pie.
"How did a werewolf manage to get in here?" The voice sounded again after ages of silence.
"WHERE?!" Dean shot up, attempting to reach for a non-existent gun.
Castiel laughed next to him, actually laughed, "Well. You're still as intuitive as ever."
It took Dean a few moments to realize there was no danger, then another few minutes to fully wake up.
He glanced at the Angel only to see that he was dressed, and looked like he'd been up for a while.
The image sent memories of last night flooding through him again.
He was an Angel. They flew. They had kissed.
"Are you alright, Dean?" Castiel asked, his expressions growing serious. Concerned.
Dean blinked a couple times, before shaking his head, rubbing at his eyes. "Yeah. Yeah. I'm fine."
Castiel tilted his head slightly, disbelief clear in his eyes.
"Hey. What time is it?" Dean asked, glancing at his bedside, where a clock used to be.
"It is 10 AM. Sam came in here earlier, but said to let you sleep in." Castiel explained.
Dean nodded, once again having to take in the fact that he was really back .
"Sorry if I disturbed you." Castiel spoke again.
Dean's eyes finally met his.
"No you aren't." A playful smile forming on his lips.
Castiel's brows lowered, giving him the familiar confused look, "Dean-"
"Just, come here." Dean finally cut him off, grabbing the first thing he could of the Angel, - his tie - before pulling him down until their lips met.
Castiel was tense above him, but easily relaxed, eagerly replying to the sudden kiss.
Dean's hand moved from the tie to fist into the dark hair, pulling them back down onto the bed.
The Angel moaned above him, caressing his cheek tenderly, slowly deepening the kiss.
They didn't take it any further, however, despite how much their bodies ached for it.
The noises the Angel made, Dean wasn't sure he'd ever be able to stop.
Not that he wanted to anyway…
After what felt like another hour, their make out session had calmed, turning into lazy short kisses.
Dean pulled away to look into Castiel's oceanic eyes.
Those eyes.
"I could get used to this." Dean spoke again.
Castiel laughed lightly, pressing his forehead against Dean's. "Maybe we should get up, so you can spend some time with your brother today."
Dean hummed.
He really hadn't spent as much time with Sam yesterday.
"Alright." He sighed sitting up, Castiel moving to allow him. "Let me shower and get a change of clothes and I'll be right out."
"I will wait for you in the map room." Castiel said, but didn't move right away.
Dean nodded before heading for the bathroom. He could tell Castiel wanted to join him, but… his cheeks heated up at the idea.
Not yet.
After a quick shower, he dug through his closet that had also remained untouched.
Was Sam ever going to get rid of his stuff?
Probably not. He was hopeful like that.
Once dressed, he made his way to the map room.
The smell of bacon immediately hit his nose.
He changed his route to the kitchen.
Of course, Castiel and Sam were in there, talking distinctly.
Once he entered, Sam immediately focused on him, smiling, "Well. Look who's finally up."
"Shut up, bitch. Where's the bacon?" Dean asked.
"Nice to see you too, jerk. Here, I saved you a plate. Still warm. Of course, I wasn't sure if you ate anymore, considering, you know, being an Angel and all." Sam ranted as Dean took the plate from him, forcing a full strip of bacon into his mouth.
"Jusht 'cuz I'm an Angel doeshn't mean I'm incapable of eating ba-con." Dean spoke around the mouth full.
Sam rolled his eyes but smiled, "Duly noted."
Dean sat down on one of the stools next to Castiel, happily gorging away at the endless bacon. He even managed to offer a piece to the Angel, who silently but politely declined.
After a few moments of silence, Sam cleared his throat, "So. You flew pretty well last night."
Dean nodded.
"Did y'all finally do it?" Sam asked next.
That question made Dean nearly choke on the last piece of bacon.
Sam couldn't hold in the laugh, even as Castiel leaned closer to Dean in concern.
Dean managed to swallow the last of the food, before clearing his own throat. "No."
"Oh come on." Sam complained.
"Sammy. I'm not talking about this with you." Dean said.
"Ok. Ok. But next time, try not to set the bunker on fire." Sam said, laughing as Dean's face continued to grow redder from embarrassment.
"Good morning." A new voice sounded in the room.
All three turned to the newcomer neither heard arrive.
"Hey Jack. How's it going?" Sam asked.
"It's… going." Jack said, almost looking confused by his own wording.
"Hey it woulda been good to know you gave me a pair of wings and halo when you brought me back to life." Dean spoke up.
Jack looked at him, even more confused. "I… didn't do that."
Deans brows came together, "Then who did?"
"You. The influence of heaven. I'm not really sure. Are you… unhappy?" Jack asked.
"No! No. Not at all. I was just… surprised." Dean said quickly. "But just to be clear, I don't have like… a certain time limit on earth, do I?"
"Of course not. The only way out is if you died, or if you requested to go back." Jack explained.
"Oh…" Dean said simply.
"So, Jack. What brings you by here today? Any cases you need help with?" Sam asked.
Dean now switched his confusion to Sam.
Asking God for cases?
"Um, no. For now, just the rogue vampires, but… I just came by to see how things were." Jack answered.
Dean's brows shot up as he focused on Jack again.
"Oh. Alright then. Well. Things are fine for now. We'll get to looking into that soon." Sam said.
"Alright. If you need help, don't hesitate to call." Jack said before vanishing out of the room.
It was quiet for a few minutes, Dean trying to take in everything.
Hunts. Vampires. Cases.
He hadn't heard nor done any of this in what felt like forever.
In heaven there were never any dangers, only happiness and love.
"Oh!" Castiel spoke up, pulling Dean from his thoughts, "I forgot to tell you this last night, but I think I might have found their hideout."
"Really? Where?" Sam asked.
"Well, it took some digging, but I think they're making a home outside a small town in Nevada." Castiel said.
Sam nodded, before checking Dean for a reaction. He was unusually quiet.
Dean just nodded slowly at his silent question.
"Wow. So, this is what happens after I die? You two keep on hunting things?"
"Well, not as often. Jack has been trying to form peace treaties and opportunities for most supernatural creatures. I don't 100% agree with some of his ethics, but… he's God, so… and it's made the world so much more peaceful. We're just hunting the ones that don't really want to listen." Sam explained.
Dean nodded slowly, "Uh-huh. So… Jack is our supervisor now?"
Sam let out a light laugh, "In a way. Yeah. Although, he doesn't like to ask us for help much."
"Yeah, he's always been an independent kid." Dean agreed.
Sam nodded, "So… Wanna come?"
Dean smiled, "Is that even a question? Sure, I'm in."
Sam smiled back, "Alright then."
After spending about an hour packing their needed gear and belongings, the three headed out of the bunker.
"Oh, Baby I've missed you." Dean said after he put his bag in the impala, running a hand down the roof of the car affectionately.
"Was she not in Heaven?" Sam asked.
"I don't think so. I mean, everything I ever really wanted or needed came to me in the house I lived in. Now that I think of it, I don't think I ever went out. Places just changed as I imagined them. I wanted to be at a bar, I was there, I wanted a burger, it was there. Heaven Sam left the house, but I don't know where he went after that." Dean explained.
The more he tried to remember, the more distorted the memories became.
Sam gave him a look of confusion, but nodded. "Okay then. Wanna drive?"
Before Dean could answer with a definite 'hell yeah', he felt a sudden rush through his body.
His grace.
He wasn't anywhere near used to these things, but…
"Actually." Dean finally spoke up, looking over at Castiel, who seemed to already sense his discomfort, "What if me and Cas flew? Think you could keep up?"
Despite how strange the question felt, Dean still managed a challenging smirk towards Sam.
Sam's jaw dropped, staring at him incredulously for what felt like hours.
Finally, he shook his head, "Uh. Y-yeah. Sure."
"Sorry Sammy. I'm sure Baby can keep up, and I miss her, but… they're really starting to get irritating." Dean said the last sentence forcefully, his back tingling and burning like it did last night when Castiel had helped bring the wings out.
Sam's eyes widened slightly, suddenly understanding, "Oh. Uh. Right. No, that's fine. I'll… see you guys when I get there."
"Not if we see you first." Dean smirked.
It only took a few more seconds before Dean's wings sprouted free, but he was able to control them easier, folding them inward before they could touch the car.
Sam's eyes widened more at the sight, an almost childish smile crossing his face, "Wow. I don't think I'm ever gonna get over those wings there. They're… amazing."
"Yeah yeah." Dean said, trying to brush of the compliment.
Now he somewhat understood why Castiel was shy of his wings.
Speaking of Castiel, Dean noticed the Angel hadn't let his out yet, even though he saw in his eyes he was prepared to help him.
"Uh. Might wanna give you a head start, Sam. I don't think he's gonna let his out in front of you." Dean said.
Sam's smile slightly faded, giving him a bitch face before rolling his eyes and getting in the car, muttering something about feeling left out.
The car started, and soon, they were alone.
Dean turned to Castiel, who then let his own wings become visible.
"Why do you only let me see them? I mean, yeah you're helping me get the hang of flying, but… Sam's not gonna judge you." Dean asked.
The smallest hint of a blush rose to the Angel's cheeks, and he shifted nervously, averting his gaze, "I know. It's just… Angels are really reserved about their wings. We only ever show them to either other angels or…" Castiel trailed off.
"… Or?" Dean pressed curiously.
Castiel hesitated for a long time, before shaking his head, "It doesn't matter. We should probably get going, catch up to Sam."
Dean wanted to press further, but he could feel his own wings growing impatient behind him.
They both took to the skies with little problem.
There still remained a small part of Dean that felt uneasy being so high up in the air, but the adrenaline and grace flowing within him was more powerful.
It didn't take long before they were flying above the familiar black impala.
They were above the clouds, so Sam most likely couldn't see them.
Dean could feel that they could probably go way faster than the car was going, but they kept at its pace.
It wasn't until they were out in the middle of nowhere that Dean decided to go lower until he was almost 10 feet above the car.
Castiel had remained above the clouds.
It took some time and patience, but he finally managed to fly right next to the driver's side of the car.
Sam didn't notice him at first, but when he did, he nearly swerved off the road.
Once he straightened the car out again, he rolled down the window, "God dammit, Dean. You trying to make me wreck?"
"Wreck Baby and there'll be hell to pay." Dean called back.
Sam smiled and shook his head, focusing back on the road.
Dean continued to tease him, flying around different angles of the car, even in front of it a couple times, before finally taking back up higher into the air.
It remained this way for the rest of the day.
Castiel and Dean may have flown ahead of Sam, but the car was always in their sights.
It was probably past midnight by the time Sam decided to pull into a café that was still open.
When he got out of the car, he looked up to the night sky.
He always knew Castiel and Dean were always right behind him.
Or in front.
Then, the sound of wings sounded behind him.
When he turned around, he saw Castiel and Dean landing in the distance.
It was late, so they weren't really worried about being seen.
"You guys have fun?" Sam asked when they approached him, wings disappearing from sight.
"My body is a bit stiff, but yeah." Dean said.
"Alright. Well. I'm gonna get something to eat, then probably find a place to turn in." Sam sighed.
"Or, I can drive the rest of the way, you can rest." Dean said, "Yeah, I could sleep, but, being an Angel, I'm not as tired as I thought I'd be."
Sam nodded, "Alright then."
The three went inside the nearly empty café.
Sam ordered a salad and a coffee, even if he was going to sleep soon.
Dean ordered a bacon cheeseburger with extra bacon and their freshest slice of pie they had.
Castiel politely declined to order.
They ate in silence and were soon on the road again.
Dean drove, Castiel deciding to come along, riding in the passenger seat while Sam made himself comfortable in the back seat and was asleep in minutes.
It was 7 AM when Dean pulled in to the small town of Ely.
Castiel navigated their way through until they came across an abandoned building.
The sun wasn't completely up yet and Sam was still asleep, so Dean pulled off the road into the tall grass and parked.
They knew not to get too close to the hideout, but made sure it was in their sights.
For another two hours, they waited.
Dean was sure he had dozed off somewhere in there because he found himself jolting awake.
He checked the clock. Almost 11.
"I think I saw the vampires going into the buildings a while ago. You were falling asleep so I didn't want to bother you." Castiel spoke beside him, making him jump.
Dean yawned, "That's fine. Give them just a little longer to get settled and we'll head in."
He looked in the backseat where Sam was still soundly sleeping.
"Hey, Sammy. We're here." Dean announced.
The younger Winchester immediately sat up alert, seeming automatically awake. "What? Where?"
"They're in that building up there. We're waiting just a few more minutes before we storm the place." Dean said.
By noon, the group finally decided to leave the car, heading warily for the old building.
They weren't sure how the vampires lived in such a place for this long, considering Dean nearly fell through the old wood on the porch that gave out beneath them.
Castiel was quick to grab him, Sam helping pull him away from the hole.
"Are you ok?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. Either we're in luck and they're deep sleepers, or we just announced ourselves to a whole nest." Dean said.
Despite the building being old, the door was still locked, which Sam picked with ease.
The door opened with a loud creak.
They were greeted with a long hallway, open doors sprinkled on the sides.
The group walked in cautiously.
They made sure to note down all locations that was intruded by the sun peeking out of holes from the ceiling.
Each room was checked as they moved further into the house.
The hallway was ending, leading to another door.
However, the door was blocked by 3 new figures.
"Well, well. Look who decided to break and enter our humble home." One of the vampires spoke up.
"We could smell you three the moment you came into town." Another spoke next.
Neither side moved for a long time.
"I got this." Dean finally spoke up, walking past Sam and Castiel, closing the distance on the vampires with ease.
Both sides seemed too in shock to make a move.
When Dean reached the vampires, he grabbed one by the shirt, before placing his other hand onto the vampires' forehead.
Silence.
Nothing.
Dean's brows lowered in confusion. He could feel the grace flowing through him, but it wasn't following his command.
The vampire's soon recovered from their shock, and the one he had a hold of smiled, teeth growing sharper before it had him in his grasp, only to shove him back, sending him flying back at inhuman speed.
The only thing that stopped him was the third or fourth wall he broke through in the house, and he swore he heard something snap when his head made contact with the cement wall, then…
Darkness.
"Dean."
"Dean!"
"Dean! Come on, wake up."
"He's still breathing."
"Dean! Come on back."
Dean awoke to the feel of someone slapping his cheek, and a killer headache.
His vision was blurry, but he could easily make out Sam's worried face inches from his.
He groaned, moving his head slightly, trying to get Sam to stop shaking him.
"Dean! Thank god. Are you ok?" Sam asked.
Dean sat up more, his back resting against the wall.
He glanced at his surroundings.
Castiel was knelt down next to Sam, a look of worry on his face.
He could also see bodies in the other room, heads severed.
Dean groaned again, "Ugh. Did I get 'em?"
Sam's brows lowered in confusion, glancing behind him at the bodies.
Dean held out a hand to Castiel, who took it, helping him to stand.
However, he still needed to use the wall for support.
When Sam returned his focus on to Dean, a glare had set in, "No. You didn't 'get them'. What were you thinking? Are you trying to get yourself killed again? You know, Jack can't keep bringing you back because of your recklessness. I- What the hell were you thinking?!"
Dean's vision and stability had slowly recovered as he focused on his frantic and fuming brother.
After a few moments of silence, Sam sighed, shaking his head.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to- I just… You scared me. I mean, I just got you back, and-" Sam was broke off when Dean finally gained the strength to move, and pull his younger brother into a tight hug.
What was he thinking? He should have known there was more Castiel had to teach him.
But what was the point of him being an Angel if he couldn't even fight like one?
"Sorry, Sammy." Dean said finally.
Sam sighed before pulling away, "It's okay, as long as you're okay. Just… don't do something stupid like that again. Okay?"
Dean forced a halfway smile, "Alright then."
Sam nodded, taking a deep breath, "Well. It took a while to wake you up, how about we get out of here, find the nearest motel and crash for the night. Sleeping in the car is fine, but, I think we all need some proper rest."
Dean nodded, before glancing over at Castiel who had been quiet through most of the discussion.
The drive was quiet.
Castiel was in the back seat, Dean in the passenger seat while Sam drove.
Castiel could sense that any human injuries Dean may have endured was mostly healed thanks to the grace.
However, he could sense that the older Winchester was aggravated and distressed about something.
He wanted to ask, but had a feeling Dean probably wouldn't tell him, especially not with Sam listening.
The sun was setting by the time they chose a motel a couple towns over.
They purchased a room with two beds.
Even if Dean didn't sleep much anymore, Sam still wanted him to rest.
"I'm gonna go grab dinner. You want anything specific?" Sam asked after they had put their gear away for the night.
"Just get me a bacon burger, the usual." Dean said, "I'm gonna take a shower."
Even Sam could tell he sounded miserable, but neither decided to question it.
Instead, Sam simply nodded and left the motel.
Dean headed for the bathroom, Castiel watching after him curiously.
What was bothering him? Was he still hurt somewhere?
Castiel sighed, sitting down on one of the beds, deciding it be best to just wait.
Ever since their first flight, ever since their wings touched, ever since they kissed… Castiel could feel more from Dean than ever before.
Right now. He felt nothing but sadness, guilt and over all, anger.
He knew Dean didn't talk about it, though.
Any time they ever tried to talk about these kinds of emotions in the past, the older Winchester would only lash out.
Castiel remained with this debate for what felt like hours.
Within these long minutes, he also noticed the shower hadn't been running at all this entire time.
Castiel glanced at the bathroom door that remained partially open.
Driven by pure curiosity, he stood, heading for the door.
If Dean was, in fact, taking his time preparing for a shower, Castiel would simply apologize and back out, but right now….
He slowly opened the door, enough to peek through.
There, he saw Dean standing at the sink, his reflection showing his head bowed down.
He was still fully dressed, and looked like he'd been there a while.
Castiel opened the door more, which squeaked in reply, easily alerting his presence.
Dean didn't seem fazed by it, however.
"Dean…?" Castiel called to him, almost a whisper, risking a few steps in.
This entire time, Castiel could sense his emotions, and now… it was as if he had frozen them in time.
"Dean? Are you alright?" He spoke again, slowly and cautiously reaching out to him.
Just as he placed his hand on his shoulder, the older Winchester flinched, as if he'd been awoken from a trance.
"Just because I don't know how to do things as an Angel yet, doesn't mean I'm useless, it doesn't mean I'm weak." Dean finally snapped out, but didn't turn to him yet.
They stared each other through their reflections.
"Dean…" Castiel spoke slowly, preparing to defend him, when he noticed a small bloodied scar on his temple that had yet to heal.
Was he… refusing himself to heal?
"You're injured." Castiel stated, reaching to place two fingers on the injury.
"God dammit, Cas!" Dean flinched away from him, finally moving away from the sink, out of his reach. "Can you, for once, not."
Dean finally faced him, glaring.
However, Castiel could see the pain behind that glare.
It was silent between them once again.
Castiel knew Dean was trying to scare him off, but he'd endured worse.
"Dean… what happened back there was an accident." Castiel started.
Dean laughed bitterly at that, "Yeah. I only risked everything and could have lost both of you because of my stupidity."
"You are not stupid." Castiel suddenly closed the distance, placing both hands on Dean's shoulders, "You were very brave. You just haven't learned everything yet. You think I learned to be human in one day? You don't have to be an Angel to prove yourself. You're already perfect the way you are."
His only reply was silence, but he could sense that Dean was slowly starting to relax.
After what felt like hours, Castiel noticed that the scar on Dean's temple slowly began to heal.
Finally, Dean shook his head, as if to clear it, "Sorry. I don't know what came over me."
"Last I checked, it was called emotions." Castiel said, trying to lighten the situation.
A small, barely visible smile came across Dean's lips, "I thought being an Angel would get rid of that crap."
Castiel gently caressed Dean's cheek, causing their eyes to meet.
He shook his head slowly, "Never get rid of your emotions. You are the one who taught me to feel. To love. It's the very reason I fell for you, both figuratively and literally."
A breath escaped Dean, but didn't reply.
He didn't need to.
Castiel closed the distance, pressing his lips to Dean's.
The kiss was one-sided for a while, until Castiel pulled away, checking for a reaction.
He could never get tired of kissing Dean, but he wanted to be sure Dean truly felt the same way.
He got his answer when Dean suddenly moved, fisting a hand into his hair, pulling him forward until their lips were crushed together in a bruising kiss.
This kiss was deep and sensual. It sent heat through his entire body.
Dean's hands travelled his form, resting on his waist, pulling him closer.
Castiel couldn't hold in the moan that escaped him as their hips met.
He moved forward until Dean's back hit the wall.
Then, he decided to try something new.
Castiel pulled away, only to press open-mouthed kisses on the side of Dean's neck.
He heard Dean's head lightly hit the wall as he moved to give him room, moaning quietly.
Castiel continued to claim every crevice that was Dean's neck. Sucking, kissing and even licking until it was red with his marks.
"C-Cas… we… we gotta stop." Dean managed above him.
Castiel immediately pulled away, only to meet a pair of dilated green eyes.
"Is there something wrong?" Castiel asked.
He knew where this was progressing to, and he wanted to. He wanted Dean.
"No. I just… don't want our first time to be in the bathroom of a run down motel room." Dean said.
Castiel felt his heart doing flips.
He wanted it too.
"Name a place, and we're there." Castiel suggested.
Dean smiled, laughing lightly, "Slow down there, tiger."
Castiel's brows came together, tilting his head.
Dean's hands left Castiel's form, before managing to get out of the entrapment, walking back into the bedroom.
Castiel watched after him, growing more confused.
Had he done something? Had he…
"Dean…-" Castiel started.
"No, Cas. You didn't do anything wrong, okay? It's just…" Dean broke off, taking a deep breath, sitting down on one of the beds.
Castiel followed him, standing a couple inches away, still confused.
"Dean… have you…" Castiel trailed off. Of course he's had sex before.
Dean looked up at him, waiting.
"Have you… slept with a man before?" Castiel finally found the words.
If this was their issue, Castiel would have no problem finding another vessel if it made Dean uncomfortable. Even though-
Dean sighed, running a hand down his face, "Once."
Castiel's brows lowered, this was news.
"It was during my demon days." Dean continued reluctantly.
It took a moment for Castiel to understand, but Dean continued.
"As you know. When I was a demon, I did…. A lot of stupid stuff." Dean said, trying to sound humorous.
Castiel just stared at him, not finding any humor in the situation.
Dean sighed, rolling his eyes when he noticed he wasn't laughing, and stood, closing the distance between them.
Castiel looked down when he felt Dean take his hands in his.
"I want to. Believe me. I do, but… I want it to be right. When I was a demon, being with another guy, it was… rough and quick. I don't want that for us. I don't want that for you. As cheesy as it sounds…" Dean trailed off, laughing at his own humor.
"I understand, Dean. You don't have to explain yourself to me." Castiel said, resting a hand on Dean's cheek. "I've waited for someone like you my whole life. I think I can wait a little longer."
Dean scoffed, averting his gaze elsewhere, "Sorry I wasn't what you expected."
Castiel smiled, shaking his head, "You are perfect in every way. You just had some flaws along the way, but I wouldn't take you any other way."
He caressed the other side of his cheek until he was cupping Dean's face, forcing him to meet his eyes.
Then, he moved forward until their lips met in a chaste kiss.
It was at that moment the door opened.
"Oh come on, really?"
Dean didn't pull away right away, as Castiel would have expected.
Finally, they pulled away, focusing on the younger Winchester standing at the door with hands full of bags.
Dean pulled out of Castiel's hold, only to grab the bag out of Sam's hand. "Thanks Sammy."
"At least tell me if I need to get another room?" Sam asked.
Dean smiled, sitting down on the bed, pulling out the food, "Nah."
Sam observed them for a while, before rolling his eyes, closing the door, and sitting on the other bed, pulling out his own food, muttering something about how it was about time.
The group ate in silence, neither finding the will to say anything.
Castiel could tell that even though Sam looked agitated towards what he walked in on, he supported it. In fact, he was happy.
Dean, however, was closing himself up again.
Castiel could usually read the older Winchester, but he also knew when it would be stepping boundaries.
Did Dean really love him? Like he loved him? Or was this just… a fling to him?
He felt his chest tighten at that.
He wished the older Winchester would trust him with these things.
His thoughts were broken off when Sam suddenly moved, throwing the empty bags away, before turning off the lights on his side, saying he was turning in.
Castiel focused on Dean, who was now resting his back against the headboard of the bed, still awake.
It was silent between them for a long time.
Castiel was accustomed to quiet, waiting as the humans slept, but now that Dean was sleeping less and less…
"…Do you want to go flying?" Castiel offered, trying to pull Dean back out of the shell he was building.
Dean sighed, but shook his head, "No thanks, Cas. I'm good."
Castiel sighed but nodded, trying to think of other ways to possibly cheer him up, without upsetting him.
After a few more minutes of silence, Dean sighed again, "Well screw it. I'm going to try and get some sleep. I don't know how you do it."
"Do what?" Castiel asked as he watched Dean turn off the lights on his side, before getting in bed.
"Just… stand there all night. Not doing anything. For you it's simple, I guess, but for me…" Dean shook his head before it hit the pillow.
Castiel smiled lightly, taking a few steps until he stood at the foot of Dean's bed, "Well lately, I find it boring as well."
"Then why don't you join me?" Dean asked, his back facing him.
Castiel felt his heart flutter, "Are you… sure?"
"Yeah, Cas. I'm sure. Just get in." Dean said, turning over to face him.
Castiel hesitated for a couple seconds, studying him carefully for any hidden sarcasm.
Finally, he moved forward, moving under the sheets Dean held for him.
Once he was in, there was barely any space between them, but Dean didn't move.
They laid together, staring into each other's eyes in the dark.
Despite the darkness, Castiel swore that even Deans' eyes glowed.
"Goodnight Dean." Castiel said, running a hand down his cheek lightly.
Dean inhaled at that, eyes falling closed. "Goodnight… Cas."
Castiel could always tell exactly when Dean fell asleep.
His body would go completely lax, his breathing would lighten, and his heartbeat would finally settle to a normal, calm rhythm.
This is how Castiel always wished Dean could feel.
Not feel like every waking hour was a fight for survival.
Castiel sighed, sliding his hand down beneath the sheets, until he found Dean's hand, slowly lacing his fingers through his.
Even though he was already asleep, Castiel felt Dean's hand welcome and tighten around his.
Castiel smiled lightly, and closed his eyes.
Whether he slept or not, he didn't care, as long as he was close to his Winchester.
A/N: Phew. This one took a while to write. I actually stopped the chapter a few hundred words ago, but, kept coming up with some additions.
Not sure how I feel about changing POV's. I think I'll be going back to Dean's. Maybe share some of Sam's POV, but other than that.
There will be one more chapter and that will wrap up this little story.
Hope you enjoyed this one. Feel free to leave some comments.
