Chapter 2:
L had a wonderful time with Quillish in Whammy's House. When he was one and a little, only three months after the little child's arrival; he was already doing well in arithmetic, English, reading and writing. By two L had them mastered, and was learning Japanese, French, Latin, Greek, German, and Chinese. Without focusing on anything but himself, L managed great heights in a short amount of time. L was really a genius, with an IQ of over 200, Whammy was somewhat relieved when there were no spurts of accidental magic. Whammy's House expanded when he was two (Quillish decided that his birthday was October 31st) Mello joined the House, and was an interesting little baby. Matt joined the next year, and the little trio was inseparable in their studies. They all mastered Criminology and the more complex sciences when L was 4.
That was also the year when L made a name for himself. There was a cold case from before he was born, about a man kidnapping and murdering small children that was baffling cops. L took one small look and figured out that the second-in-command at the police station was the murderer. It took him 30 minutes to figure this out. The cops were skeptical, but his deduction proved to be correct, and 'L' was born.
All governments reached out to L when they needed help, but no one knew that he was in fact a pre-pubescent toddler. He never showed his face or revealed his last name, eventually splitting off and becoming Coil and Deneuve.
L was turning 10 later this year, and was in the USA for the LABB murders, Quillish couldn't be more proud of him. During his time at the orphanage, he would refuse to wear any clothing other than a white long sleeve baggy shirt and equally baggy pants. As a toddler this was certainly a cute look on him. His hair grew at alarming rates, and could never be tamed, so L kept it uncombed. After years of nightmares, L developed insomnia, and could not sleep for more than an hour at a time, panda-like shadows encircling his eyes. His pupils were permanently blown, from working in the dark for so long. The greens of his eyes were no longer there, replaced with a gray-black. He had requested to have the scar surgically removed at age of 6. It was distracting, he had said, and Whammy had to agree. The image that everyone who has watched Death Note was born. (Little 4th wall break there!)
It was August, and L had returned a week ago to the orphanage, having tracked down Beyond Birthday and taking him into custody, were he met up with Mello and Matt, who were 8 and 7 respectively. Mello had gained an addiction to chocolate, and was in love with the stuff. When the lady that lived down the street said that there was a way to make infinite chocolate, Mello cried, tears of joy of course. Matt instead developed an addiction to games. He got a DS, and had already played through all of the game cartridges he had twice. Whammy's reminiscing was cut off by a knock on the front door.
When he opened it, he saw two adults, maybe around 30-35 in age, he estimated. The red-headed female smiled at him, and the black-haired fellow next to her wound an arm around her protectively.
"Hello, young couple, are you here to adopt? This is an orphanage after all." Whammy was careful with how he approached them. With the man's horrid sense of fashion, wearing something akin to robes, he thought they might be wizards, and the only wizard child was L, and they might be after him. Maybe they are the people that abandoned him? Whammy wondered to himself.
Whammy would never admit it, but L had grown on him, and he began to consider him as even a grandson of sorts. He was protective of the boy, and realized that he still had some innate magic. He could carry objects to him with his mind, and could detect when a person was lying through reading their minds, all useful when cooped up in front of a computer listening to police blunder at their jobs through a computer camera.
"Hello sir, me and my wife do not want to adopt, but want to inquire about one of your charges. Our friend left him here around nine years ago, and we had originally sent him away with the intention of taking him back on his tenth birthday. His name is Harry James Potter. Is he here?" Whammy straightened, and plastered a smile on his face. This was the couple who would easily abandon their child in favor of a second, and now they wanted him back? They were the epitome of horrible parenting. Inwardly cringing as he brought them into the building, he rung the bell and the trio watched as all of the kids, save one, hurried down in front of Quillish.
Lily noticed that one child had welders goggles on his head, and a muggle DS sticking out of his vest pocket, which covered a striped shirt. He was rather a cute child, but he was not her son. She wanted Harry back, since Charlie's training was going good, he was already learning first-year spells, a year before Hogwarts, he was a little slow, but she didn't mind.
The second was munching on a chocolate bar, constantly rearranging it to gain and extra piece of it. His bob-like hair was golden blonde, and he wore black and white. They introduced themselves as Matt and Mello respectively.
"Sir, do you have anymore charges?" James' voice was strained, almost irritated that he even had to ask. 'Harry should be taken home and they would all be a big family', that's what he told himself at night, 'Harry had to go so we focused on Charlie' that's another lie that he told himself to keep his sanity.
Whammy shook his head no, "We have one more child, but he is a permanent resident. I will call him down, he is probably working on a case again. He loves to work on cold cases you see?" He cried a quick "L!" Up the staircase, with which came the response, "Coming Whammy!"
While Lily and James mulled over the idea of calling their child by a letter, when a small child, around Harry's age, sulked down the stairs. He was munching on a slice of Strawberry Cake, and had crumbs on his barely cleaned but still magically fresh shirt. Coming down the stairs barefoot he spared a glance at the couple, and Lily almost immediately recognized him. What stopped her at first was the lack of scar and the black eyes.
But no, this child had James' cheekbones, and her nose, this was Harry.
"Harry!" She cried, fully expecting a warm hug in response. L only looked at her a little spooked and moved away to sit on a chair, while his sperm donors (as he fondly called his biological father) eyebrows shot up at his weird posture.
"Harry, I am James, and this is my wife Lily, we have come to take you home. We sent you away so that you would be safe, and now we would like it if you would come with us, you have a twin brother and younger sister we would like you to meet!" James intoned, his voice excited and full. He looked up at L when he said these things, but faltered when he saw the emotionless eyes, ending with a quiet voice.
Here was the moment that the amazing Quillish decided to step in;
"Well I'm sorry sir and madam, but this boy is not Harry, his name is Ryuzaki, and he is a permanent resident. All of these children are here to stay. They are gifted, as stated by the sign out front. Yes this is an orphanage, but I would also like to ask, what in your right mind possessed you to abandon a one-year old child?" Whammy used L's alias, and L looked eternally grateful, even through he had been called down with his name. The less people knew he was the detective the better.
The two wizards looked appalled, and James became violet in the face.
"Now listen here mister! That is our son and we are taking him home! I do not care what his name now is but we are taking him back with us whether you want us to or not." At this he grabbed L's arm and tried to force him up, he directed his rant at him now,
"Now young child, what in your right mind possessed you to look so crazy! Improve your posture right now Harry, that is not the posture of a Potter!" He practically puffed his chest up at this. L though though that this man had a 90% change of being an absolute moron. James stoped pulling on his sleeve suddenly when a gun was pointing at his face. Quillish had pulled it out the he began tugging on L.
"Please leave this establishment sir, you are clearly a danger to my charges and I will not hesitate to show force." Lily knew what was pointed in her husbands face, so with a wistful look at her believed to be son, she tugged him out, who was screaming obscenities until he was out the front gate. Whammy knelt down before L and made sure he wasn't hurt,
"I am fine Quillish, I was looking for a new case, I solved the latest one when you called me down. I was thinking of maybe heading out to Japan to take down a couple criminal bosses." Whammy nodded along, L always knew which cases were the most exciting.
Whammy, going by the alias Watari as he carried around the computer connected to L's, and Ryuzaki, L's usually used alias, where in Japan for two years before their interest was peaked by the Kira Case.
