Ding-dong!
...The doorbell?
Ding-dong!
Who was it at this hour?
Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Ding-dong!
"I'm coming!" Wally called to the door. "It's way too late for people to ring your doorbell that many times," he muttered. He opened the door without checking the peephole. He saw a flash of metal and slammed the door so hard it broke off its hinges. The door opened and a woman came waltzing in like she owned the apartment.
"Hey Wally," Madison said nonchalantly. "I missed you." She held a knife in one hand, casually twirling it as she approached. "You know what I want, right?"
Wally hesitantly stepped back. He looked for anything he might be able to use as a weapon. Some clothes on the floor, the TV remote, an empty pizza box. Madison was standing in front of the kitchen where his knives were. There was no way he wouldn't hurt or even kill himself if tried to jump out a window. He was trapped.
Trapped.
Madison closed the distance between them and caressed Wally's cheek.
"I missed you, Wally," she repeated as she stroked his cheek. Wally shivered at her touch all while staring at the knife in her hand. "Oh, this? It's to make sure I get what I want today," Madison laughed as she raised the knife until it was level with Wally's throat.
"You're not going to leave me again, Wally. After all… I'm pregnant. You wouldn't leave a baby all alone in the world, would you?" She whispered in his ear. Wally froze. They had always used protection. He had always used protection. So she couldn't be pregnant. Could she? Madison smiled at the news sunk in.
"I'm going to get what I want today, since I'm already pregnant," she said.
She slowly looked him up and down once, twice.
"Yes, I'm going to get what I want today."
"The bed, Wally," Madison demanded. When he didn't move, she used her free hand to grab his hand and push him toward the bedroom. He didn't resist much, but she was sure that was because he was afraid of the knife. Madison knew she would never kill him. She loved him too much. He just needed to be reminded of how much she still loved him. All he had to do was give her what she wanted, when she wanted it. He would be fine.
Wally found himself shoved onto the bed. He immediately curled up into a ball in the hopes of deterring Madison. He suddenly realized that he was bleeding. Not from his throat, like he expected, but from his arm. How did the blood get there? There was no reason to be bleeding there. Wally felt lost in a haze of confusion.
Madison leaned in and removed the knife from Wally's arm. "Next time, you'll think twice about preventing me from getting what I want," She said matter-of-factly." Her expression softened. "I had a great time, Wally. Let's do this again soon. I love you." Then she got up and left.
Wally wandered in the confused haze for a while. Since he had eaten recently, the wound healed quickly. Like the knife wounds. Like all his other wounds. He could still hear her voice.
"I love you."
Why would she do that if she loved me?
As he came back into reality, he noticed something new. The blanket had something on it. A horrifying realization came over him. She had gotten what she wanted. While he had been confused, she had gotten her way. When did she do that? How did she do that? He hadn't been willing! He wasn't even there! He was lost in confusion! He was gone! He was gone and she had taken advantage of the situation. Or had he still been there the whole time?
Wally was breathing too quickly to think. Too quickly to feel. His breaths were coming out in small gasps. He knew he was hyperventilating now. Slow down. He thought to himself. But he couldn't.
She's pregnant. I'm the father. I can't get away from her. She hurt me. Look what she did to me. I can't get away. Calm down. I can't get away. Calm down. I can't get away. Calm down! I can't get away. I can't breathe! I can't get away. I can't get away. I can't get away.
Trapped.
