The Vault Hunter had returned to the bridge to meet with Lilith after speaking with the remaining friendlies. Lilith smiled at this and placed her hands upon her hips while nodding her head.
"All set, killers?" Lilith asked.
"I'm sure J here is itching to tear the Calypso's a new one," Smoke commented with a chuckle along with Moze.
"I am not itching at all...I do want to kill them though," J said bringing his right knuckle to his left palm.
"Ahh, sarcasm. Always goes over my buddy's head...never gets old," Smoke said with another chuckle.
"None the less we're ready commander," Moze said earning a nod from Lilith.
"It's time to beat some CoV ass and take down the Calypso's. Head to Roland's Rest. Vaughn and Tannis will be ready for you," Lilith said looking between the three Vault Hunters.
"It's on. Time to ice those Calypso's and save Pandora. Then we're going to party, BALEX-style," Balex noticed on through the speakers.
"Hey recruit - what are you doing working for Tannis? You're my bi..." Claptrap paused as J glared at the robot who flinched back. "Bestest friend!"
J narrowed his eyes and slowly turned away causing Claptrap to sigh in relief.
"Then we'll head down now. Wish us luck," Smoke said turning and making his way to the hanger bay.
J placed his hands together and bowed his head slightly in respect to Lilith while Moze gave a proper salute before they followed after Smoke.
-Pandora: Roland's Rest-
As they arrived at the Crimson Raiders base of operations, Vaughn and Tannis waited for them by the buildings. Smoke was happy to see Tannis and made a jog toward her direction earning a groan from Moze and J before they also followed. As soon as they reached the historian and near-naked man, Tannis looked at Smoke before blushing faintly only for Vaughn to cheer with arms raised.
"Vault Hunter! It is time! Once you take down those turrets we'll storm the stronghold together!" Vaughn commented.
"Well, time to be a hero! Whenever I imagined saving the world it was always by curing a bio plague I'd accidentally unleashed," Tannis pitched in earning a laugh from Smoke.
"Not going to lie I didn't picture myself being a hero either. All I ever thought about was breaking into a vault taking stuff with my best friend J and moving on to the next while inventing new things... And smoking weed...can't forget the last part. Very important," Smoke added while slipping his hands into his coat pocket nodding his head slowly.
"Then let's do this," Moze said narrowing her eyes.
Tannis nodded and walked past the three to a platform revealing the Eridium amplifier. Smoke blinked at this machinery he somehow did not notice along with his teammates.
"Looks weird...kind of makes me wanna lick it," Vaughn admitted scratching the back of his head.
"Do it," Smoke said only to get elbowed in the side by Moze earning a soft grunt. "Don't do it,"
"Alright. Here we go," Tannis said standing on a platform in front of the amplifier just as a Crimson Raider started it up and began to power up the Siren, even enough to have her white wings become visible. "Oh my..."
"My bae is powering UP!" Smoke said with a wide smile as the amplifier started to power down causing Tannis to fall to her knee with her hands catching herself from collapsing to the floor causing the inventor to move to the historian's side placing his hands on her shoulders ignoring the Sirens wings.
"I feel...powerful..." Tannis spoke as she said looking up at Smoke and got up with the inventor's help. "Thank you..."
Smoke nodded his head before Tannis backed away from Smoke as to not harm him. Tannis looked up at the sky and engulfed herself in light only to disappear in a flash. Thanks to Smokes visor he was safe from the sudden flash but Moze was forced to cover her eyes along with J. As the two vault hunters uncovered their eyes, Tannis would be missing while Smoke was looking up into the sky smiling.
"Ah yeah. My babe is flying high," Smoke said nodding his head.
"Vault Hunters, I'll meet you up ahead. If I'm to moonlight as a hero, I should use the vernacy, yes? It is...go time," Tannis spoke through the Echo-3 earning a nod from Smoke.
"You heard Tannis. Let's a go!" Smoke said making his way over to Moze. "And we are going in with Iron Bear X, Sentinel Variant. No need to show them all we have yet right?"
"Agreed. What about J?" Moze asked looking at the fighter who tilted his head.
"He'll fight alongside us. Even if he ain't fusing with Iron Bear X, doesn't mean he's going to be left behind. Remember the Sentinel Variant is a long-range fighter. As such we will be needing a vanguard," Smoke answered looking at his friend chuckling. "I gotcha buddy!"
J nodded at this before Smoke walked past the two and jumped up causing Iron Bear to manifest in front of the inventor followed by its form shifting. Moze hoped in a second later earning a chuckle from Smoke as she appeared behind the inventor. As soon as Moze entered Iron Bear X, Smoke immediately pressed the fusion function causing the sitting arrangements to shift but only slightly with the soldier being lifted slightly higher while the inventor stayed where he was.
"I got the weapon shift function down here. You got the trigger to fire them and free movement," Smoke called out swaying his hands forward creating a single square holoscreen with all four weapons in view. "Ask and you will receive,"
"Roger that," Moze said rolling her shoulders back seeing what Iron Bear X saw only to feel a thump on the mech's right shoulder.
"I'm ready," J said revealing himself on Iron Bear X's right shoulder just as he bunkered down with his feet.
"Then let's go!" Smoke said with a chuckle.
Moze said no more and rode off toward the direction of where the turrets were going to be. It did not take long before they could see the outpost occupied with bandits as well as some CoV vehicles.
"Mortar," Moze said earning a nod from Smoke.
"Mortar. Coming right up," Smoke said swaying his hands about causing a mortar to take form in front of Iron Bear X who took it and started to aim. "Ah, buddy. Hop on that mortar why don't cha,"
Moze's eyes grew wide as she looked down at Smoke.
"Don't worry. J knows what I am planning...plus we've done this before," Smoke said not even looking at the soldier who groaned and went back to aiming.
J nodded at the idea presented to him as he hopped into the mortar tube.
"Target locked," Moze announced. "Firing in three..."
As soon as she said zero, she fired the mortar shell along with J while Moze watched the fighter carefully. Once the shell was high enough in the sky, J took hold of the shell and flung it at the outpost before using his feet to launch himself toward the ground.
"What the fuck is that?!" A bandit shouted as he pointed out the descending mortar shell that crushed his form before exploding.
Three bandits were killed before J crashed into a large bandit crushing him in the process and getting to work in clearing the outpost of CoV.
"Railgun," Moze spoke as the mortar shifted into a long-range railgun and started to destroy any CoV vehicles in view.
After a minute of fighting, the outpost was cleared of enemies allowing J to make his way toward the controls of the outpost just as Tannis appeared to his right. This caused the fighter to bring his fist toward her face only to stop mere inches from connecting. Tannis' eyes were wide at this before J narrowed his eyes and slowly pulled his fist back.
"...sorry...instincts," J said backing away causing Tannis to chuckle nervously.
"Apology accepted. Also noted...never pop up by you unexpectedly again," Tannis said before walking forward and looking out at the turrets. "Executing phaseshift. Let the controlled chaos commence,","
Tannis closed her eyes and slowly stretched her arms out outward on separate sides while her form was being lifted by her siren power. Once Tannis had gathered enough energy, she opened her eyes causing a wave of energy to spread throughout the area. A smile grew over Tanni's lips as she turned to face J as well as Iron Bear X.
"I've taken over all of the turrets and promised them amnesty. Please welcome the newest members of the Crimson Raiders!" Tannis introduced earning a nod from Smoke and Moze while J looked out to the turrets seeing a single heavy CoV vehicle roll up only for the turrets to target and decimate it in a mere second.
"Ahhh yeah, now we are talking!" Smoke said chuckling.
"With the turret threats out of the way let's advance," Moze said earning a nod from J who jumped up and landed on Iron Bears' left shoulder now.
"Let's hit it!" Smoke said as Iron Bear advanced along with the Crimson Raiders at Roland's Rest.
-Cathedral of the Twin Gods-
Upon entering the area, Smoke's eyes grew wide seeing CoV dropships begin to bombard their position while enemy vehicles were moving in. Smoke scuffed at this and looked over his shoulder at Moze.
"Change of plans. We're shifting to the Fortress variant," Smoke notified before looking forward. "Buddy. We're going to unfuse alright but do not be alarmed. We're letting Moze take the reins now,"
"Ready," J said hoping off Iron Bear X just as it faded away allowing Moze to grab the inventor's shoulder to pull him behind her so she would be in the front.
With Moze in front of Smoke, Iron Bear Mark II formed around the two just as J landed on the mechs head. Once Iron Bear II had fully materialized, Moze immediately pressed the button causing the mech to shift into its turret mode along with Smoke grinning. A second later, the turret split its barrel while also materializing four bulky beetle-like legs. While they were getting ready, Vaughn and the Crimson Raiders were defending their transformation without question.
"Iron Bear Fortress Variant is ready to bring the heat!" Smoke shouted taking control of the movement. "Moze you got the main guns while J mans the side guns,"
"What are the side guns?" Moze asked looking down at Smoke seeing she was placed higher than her teammates with the inventor in front and J placed under her.
"What else? Miniguns. Five in total. One on each leg with the last one being placed below us just in case," Smoke answered while moving their fortress forward.
"WOOOO NOW THAT'S A VEHICLE!" Vaughn shouted.
"Dropships are mine...J. Take care of the ground vehicles and towers," Moze said narrowing her eyes and firing upon a dropship watching as it exploded in a flash of light.
J merely nodded his head and began to fire away at the CoV ground vehicles and towers. Even if they were getting hit by enemy fire, it did almost no damage as Iron Bear II continued forward without slowing down. With the help of everyone else, the assault was far more than the Children of the Vault could handle.
"Nothings stopping this big girl!" Smoke clarified before laughing.
As soon as they reached the front door of the settlement, the Fortress class ran out of energy causing the three to land on the ground.
"...except that...god damn it," Smoke said rubbing the back of his head.
"That's fine. We're going in with backup," Moze pointed out looking up at the sky with a smile.
"Ah, Vault Hunters. Tiny Tina made this for me...wanna do the honors?" Ava asked looking over at the three smiling.
"Nah fam that's all you. Tina made that for you. Use it," Smoke spoke up earning a chuckle from Ava who looked at the bomb and set it off with a flip of a button.
Once the door was destroyed, the Vault Hunters and Crimson Raiders ran in only to be met with a hail of bullets. Ava and the Vault Hunters dove into cover along with some of the Crimson Raiders while some were gunned down.
"...uh everyone stay in cover," Smoke shouted chuckling.
"What why?" Ava asked with a raised brow while looking at Smoke.
"We're unleashing Iron Bear Zero," Smoke notified causing Moze to blink before shaking her head.
"Are you nuts? I thought that was something we were supposed to avoid?!" Moze shouted back.
"Normally yeah but we gotta stop them as soon as possible and this place is too cramped for the other variants. I mean there's Iron Bear X but...again...too cramped," Smoke argued back earning a heavy groan from Moze.
"Fine..." Moze said causing Smoke to nod his head and look at J.
"Alright, buddy. You're up. Just jump up and imagine you being Iron Bear's heart," Smoke instructed which J nodded in return.
J took a deep breath before jumping up into the air watching as Iron Bear took form around the fighter. Its form shifted into a bulkier version of Iron Bear with J being in the center of the mech unit. Unlike the others, J had no controls but instead was within a sphere giving the fighter free rein on his movements as if it was his own. The weapons shift into close-range tools, instead of them being guns, they were shifted into fists with a limited range. In fact, it matched J's normal fighting style making the mechs use that much easier.
"Let there be carnage," J whispered to himself before charging forward raising his right hand to create a temporary flame shied to help his advance.
The sound of screaming came from the courtyard as well as further ahead allowing Smoke to poke his head out of cover to see bandit bodies scattered throughout the field. He could not help but whistle at the mess his friend left before taking his gun out and looking to Moze.
"Let's follow suit. With Iron Bear Zero. There won't really but much that's needed from us," Smoke admitted before turning his attention to where his friend ran off to.
"Why didn't we use this from the start?" Moze asked walking beside J.
"Unlike the other variants. J's is the only one that is not run by unlimited power. He has a time limit...and going into a fused variant only shortens the time limit before Iron Bear Zero shuts down," Smoke explained before jogging after his friend along with Moze and the rest of the Crimson Raiders.
By the time J's teammates and Crimson Raiders caught up with Iron Bear Zero, the mech had a Goliath in his right hand before its palm opened up into the flame revolver that incinerated the CoV enemy before slamming the burning corpse into the ground. Smoke could not help but whistle at this before chuckling only to scan the field seeing no more enemies were left. Even the Crimson Raiders were speechless about what was before them.
"Were we even needed?" A Crimson raider asked looking at the carnage.
"...not really but it's the thought that counts. You showed your commitment to the cause of stopping the Calypso twins. Even if Troy was bitching the entire time," Smoke answered while keeping his eyes on J seeing Iron Bear Zero deconstruct and his friend land on the ground. "And now it is on cooldown for...ten minutes,"
"Will I be able to use Iron Bear or not?" Moze questioned looking at Smoke who looked over his shoulder at the soldier and shook his head slowly. "Cooldown...got it,"
"Cooldown," Smoke repeated before looking back at J as he walked over to the fighter. "How was it, buddy?"
"...empowering...and hard to control," J admitted while taking a deep breath. "So much rage..."
"It's alright buddy. You'll get a hang of it eventually," Smoke said placing his hand on J's shoulder. "In time,"
J nodded his head in thanks before looking toward the entrance of what seemed to be a grinder.
"Shall we?" Smoke said looking at J who turn to face his friend and nod while Moze smirked.
"Hooray," J said looking over to Moze who nodded her head.
"Hooray," Moze repeated before all three Vault Hunters moved in.
"We'll just...wait out here...I guess," The same Crimson Raider spoke with a soft wave.
As the three entered what seemed to be a small stadium, an Anointed came out of nowhere and landed in front of them. J narrowed his eyes as the Anointed looked at the fighter and pointed at him.
"Goddess Tyreen wishes to speak with you!" The anointed spoke causing Smoke and Moze to look at the CoV officer surprised.
"Holy shit you guys can complete a sentence?" Smoke said which J scuffed at.
"If she wants to talk to me, she should do so personally," J replied earning a loud battle cry from the Anointed. "Not a servant,"
"Yeah. Like he said," Smoke said chuckling while taking out a joint and putting it between his lips.
"Even without a robot?" The Anointed said narrowing his eyes.
"Man. The mech helps in finishing the fights faster. Without it... it only prolongs the inevitable," Smoke answered while getting his rocket launcher out. "Let us show you,"
Smoke raised his left arm and gripped it tightly activating his Epicman function followed by J bringing his knuckles together causing his entire body to turn black. Both had shifted to their all-out forms while Moze scuffed and got into cover to give cover fire while also dealing with any CoV grunts that wanted to try and help their higher up. The Anointed laughed before teleporting in front of Smoke while aiming a fully charged laser beam at the inventor's face.
As the Anointed was about to fire the laser beam, J jumped over Smoke and delivered a swift heel drop to the cannon shifting its target to the ground. With the cannon out of Smoke's face, he brought his cannon to the Anointed's gut while aiming to the sky chuckling. The Anointed blinked at this before he was blasted at point-blank by Smoke into the air with J following suit. Now that J was in the air, he took hold of the Anointed and used his feet to launch them higher into the sky.
"Where are...you taking me?" The Anointed asked trying to break free and even teleport but failed.
J did not answer but merely released his hold and began to wail on the Anointed with all four elements. After every punch, J would switch to the next element dealing every single damage he could. Once Smoke saw the two start to descend, he moved to where they would land before aiming up at the Anointed with his left arm cannon while using his right hand to steady his aim as it started to charge. The fighter could tell his friend was below making him smirk while bringing both feet to the Anointed's gut making him fall faster. As the Anointed began to descend toward the ground, Smoke fired his arm beam which collided with the enemy officer.
The Anointed screamed in pain as Smoke's energy beam pierced through his body before having the stream of energy cut vertical splitting the enemy in half. J landed beside Smoke shifting back to normal while the inventor's arm did the same. Moze walked out of her cover while holstering her assault rifle looking at the dead Anointed that turned into Eridium.
"You must cut off Troy's supply of Eridium. Vault Hunters, Pandora is in your hands!" Tannis spoke through the Echo-3.
"How do we do that exactly?" Smoke asked with a raised brow.
"Troy's Eridium supply seems to be flowing from the statues. Let's see if we can cut him off from the source," Ava responded on the Echo-3 as well.
"...sounds easy enough," Smoke said with a chuckle while getting his rocket launcher out. "Who do you two got?"
"I got Troy," J answered while glaring at the statue of the male CoV leader.
"Guess me and Moze got Tyreen," Smoke said with a chuckle.
"You need to overload the tanks and make them explode," Ava explained causing Smoke to blink his eyes and sigh in disappointment.
"...not what I expected but fine," Smoke said as the sound of screaming was heard around them seeing more CoV beginning to flood the area.
"I'll handle the overflow to the statues," Moze spoke up earning a nod from Smoke.
"And I will deal with the CoV. J will be your bodyguard," Smoke replied with a smile before winking. "Thank me later,"
Moze scuffed with a faint blush as she ran off to start turning the handles to increase the pressure on the statues. Smoke holster his rocket launcher only to pull out his sniper Gatling grinning. The inventor snapped his fingers causing his corrosive sentry to appear and begin firing on the closest bandit while using his Gatling sniper to shoot at any visible CoV's around him. J stayed beside Moze as she turned two out of the four handles until an Anointed appeared glaring at the soldier.
"I got it!" Smoke shouted as a puck collided with the Anointed head and marked his entire body followed by a hail of rockets slamming down on the CoV officer.
As the dirt cleared up, all that could be seen were pieces of Eridium in a small crater. Moze smirked at this before twisting the third handle only to look around for the last one. The soldier looked up seeing the marked location on her hub earning a soft groan. Suddenly she felt J wrap his arms around her waist before pulling her close to his body catching her attention while her eyes went wide.
"What are you doing?" Moze questioned looking at J who was facing the direction she was a second ago.
"You have to get to that platform. I will take you there," J said before shooting from his feet launching the two upward and toward the destination.
After a few shots from J's feet, they arrived at their destination allowing the fighter to release his hold on Moze while looking down at her.
"We're here Moze," J announced causing her to sigh in relief while releasing her hold on the fighter and dust herself off.
"A little warning next time," Moze said with a soft blush still on her cheeks before she made her way to the last handle.
As Moze finished turning the handle, the Eridium canister behind the statues started to crack with purple liquid already beginning to gush out.
"Right there! A weak spot. Take it down!" Ava pointed out causing all three Vault Hunters to open fire on the large canister.
It did not take much before the large canister was destroyed.
"You did it Vault Hunters. Troy stopped charging Elpis," Lilith notified the Vault Hunters.
"Go kill those maniacs...for Maya," Ava said.
"For Maya," The Vault Hunters said in unison as they advanced into the pipes toward the Great Vault.
-The Great Vault-
As they went through the pipes toward the Calypso twin's destination, the same beam of energy shot out of a stone pyramid stopping the three in their tracks.
"How? The Vault Hunters cut off their Eridium supply. How are they getting that kind of power?!" Lilith asked confused.
"...there's only one power source left," Smoke pointed out with narrowed eyes before looking over to his friends. "Troy is using his sister as a battery,"
"You have to stop Troy NOW! It's the only way!" Lilith spoke before the three Vault Hunters ran toward the marked destination.
"Don't have to tell us twice," Moze said narrowing her eyes.
Without hesitation, they entered the hole and landed on the ground to find Tyreen and Troy levitating off the ground looking at the Vault Hunters with a smile.
"Hahaha. Been waitin' for this Vault Thieves!" Troy commented before bringing breaking from his task and landing on the ground.
As Troy landed on the ground, orbs of shock energy shot out from around the Calypso while Tyreen remained in a separate sphere continuing to power her brother. Seeing the orbs of energy racing toward them, Smoke and Moze moved behind J who brought his left hand up before absorbing the energy orbs in a five-meter radius. Once J finished absorbing the first wave of energy orbs, he was suddenly tackled by Troy who pinned him into the wall while raising his sword to bring down on the fighter. J only smirked at this as he brought his left hand up to stop his swing by grabbing Troys right.
"Gotcha," J whispered as a puck hit the back of Troy's head causing the Calypso to look over his shoulder with annoyance since he was marked.
"Should you really be distracted by me?!" Smoke questioned.
J took this chance to blast Troy's right hand back before bringing his left hand onto the Calypso's chest.
"Shiii..." Troy shouted as he quickly snapped back to J only to be launched back by the full power he absorbed launching the Calypso into the sky. "You mothe..."
Troy was interrupted as a hail of rockets collided with the Calypso causing him to scream in pain while smoke surrounded him. Before it cleared, Troy flailed his sword around his body shooting more shock orbs before flying down toward the fighter. J saw the shock orbs racing to his position and was about to bring his hand to absorb the attack until he saw Troy charge forward. Seeing Troy rush in, J rolled out of the way seeing Troy pierce the wall behind him.
J took this chance to launch himself at Troy by firing from his feet toward the Calypso. By the time Troy knew what was happening, J's right fist had collided with his face sending him flying backward. As Troy flew backward and started to slow down, a barrage of rockets flew in and slammed into his form from behind reminding the Calypso of the inventor as well as the soldier. No matter how hard Troy tried to fight, he would either be intercepted J or flanked by Smoke. Even when Troy slammed his robotic arm into the ground and pull out a large pillar of rubble, J intercepted the attack by punching it with ice and shattering it into ice cubes.
"Give it up Troy! You ain't winning this battle!" Smoke said looking at Troy while he was reloading his rocket launcher chuckling.
"I WILL WIN THIS VAULT TRASH! NO ONE WILL GET IN OUR WAY!" Troy shouted while raising his arms over his head collecting rubble around the field while flying into the air.
"Looks like his final attack everyone...LAY HIS ASS DOWN!" Smoke responded while unloading his rockets on Troy.
Unlike before, any attack that would usually hit Troy was brought to the cluster of mass over the Calypso. Troy grinned and swung his arms down toward J causing the fighter's eyes to go wide. Seeing the attack descend toward his direction, J started to throw a flurry of punches toward the large sphere.
"J! TIME TO POWER UP!" Smoke shouted to his friend who aimed with his flamethrower and gripped his hand activating it.
J nodded and aimed his right hand at Smoke's flamethrower, absorbing it while the fighter pointed his opposite toward the falling sphere of energy. Gritting his teeth, J opened his other hand and fired a stream of blazing electricity which collided with the falling sphere. As hard as J tried, all the attack did was slow it down until the fighter's entire body was enveloped in black armor. Once J was fully enveloped in armor, he placed both hands together increasing the power and radius of the beam of energy which was now beginning to push the large sphere back.
"I got you, buddy!" Smoke spoke activating his Epicman function and firing into his friend's beam.
Moze stood there watching the power struggle seeing that she was unable to help her teammates. The combined strength of the two friends had finally pierced through the large sphere causing it to explode while slamming into Troy. As the beam died down, Troy fell to the ground seared and a burned robotic arm. Once Troy collapsed, so did Tyreen as they lay by one another.
"Holy shit was that close," Smoke said turning his Epicman function along with J shifting back to normal.
Ava followed by Tannis and Lilith.
"A-Are they dead?" Ava asked kneeling beside Troy looking him over while Smoke laughed softly.
"Well...I am pretty sure Troy is...dead dead so nothing to worry about him...but the sister is another story," Smoke said looking at Ava as she placed her hand on the corpse of Troy.
Suddenly a bluish light enveloped Troy's dead body only for it to move up Ava's arm revealing her Siren tattoo. Ava stood up looking at her arm before being enveloped in purple energy followed by levitating her off the ground. Smoke could not help but record what was happening at Siren powers being awakened for future weaponry.
"That's fucking dope," Smoke commented with a chuckle.
"Maya..." Ava whispered with a smile while looking up at the sky only for her to eventually float to the ground and land in the center of the group.
"Those powers never really belonged to Troy..." Tannis spoke blinking her eyes before smiling. "And now they have found their rightful owner,"
"Maya had a plan all along. Heh. It suites you Ava," Lilith commented while looking at the young Siren.
"But...what about you?" Ava asked looking at Lilith.
"It's pretty clear. Tyreen ain't dead," Smoke said looking to the last Calypso and pointing his left arm at her preparing to activate his flamethrower.
"There's no need to..." Lilith stopped as J's hand moved in front of Smoke's wrist causing the inventor to blink his eyes.
"...buddy...what are you doing?" Smoke asked with a nervous smile.
"It is not over," J said walking in front of Smoke while looking at the rest of the group. "I wish to learn about want...and love..."
"The fuck do you mean? You had that chance with Moxxie back on Sanctuary!" Smoke said chuckling while lowering his left hand. "Plus there is a time and place for that stuff..."
"Yes...here...and now...correct Tyreen?" J said narrowing his eyes as his body was instantly enveloped in his black suit.
