The Crimson Raiders grouped up while looking around seeing pillars of flame surrounding them. Smoke was too focused on trying to shut J down while Tannis and Ava prepared their Siren powers.
"Can you shut him down Smoke?" Lilith asked looking over at the inventor who nodded his head.
"I can but I need to see him first. What about you babe?" Smoke said glancing over at Tannis now.
"I could try but I used most of the Eridium boost for the turrets...I don't know if I have enough power to shut J down," Tannis answered nervously.
"With Tyreen's teleport and J's agility along with both of their firepower...it'll become a dangerous battle," Smoke said gritting his teeth. "Still don't know why he is grouping up with Tyreen but I am sure he has a reason...one he will explain on a later date...hopefully..."
"What do you mean hopefully? He sided with Tyreen. He's an enemy now," Moze replied looking down at the timer she set for Iron Bear seeing three more minutes were left.
Suddenly a text appeared in front of Smoke through his visor. Gritting his teeth, he took a deep breath and exhaled.
"We gotta play dead," Smoke whispered while looking around.
"What why?" Moze shouted while glaring at Smoke.
"Because we cannot win this battle...J gave me a heads up...well more like a warning but we ain't winning this fight," Smoke explained before groaning in defeat.
"We can take them," Ava said with confidence.
"We are fighting a Siren with double the power and possibly the deadliest cyborg in the entire universe. We ain't winning...unless you got a plan to deal with both of them at the same time?" Smoke asked glancing at Ava who looked at the ground.
"How do you expect us to play dead?" Tannis asked looking to Smoke.
"Ava...you got Maya's powers...can you make a bubble big enough to protect us all?" Smoke asked looking around again.
"Possibly..." Ava admitted with a nervous shrug.
"Welp then our lives are literally in your hands...no pressure," Smoke said before looking up into the sky seeing Tyreen overhead along with J behind her.
Tyreen stretched her arms out gathering power while breaking the statues around the area and pulling their crumbling forms to her. As soon as they were meters away from the young teenager, the stone pieces began to orbit around Tyreen while J began to punch the boulders enveloping them in his elements. Once Tyreen gathered enough boulders and waited long enough, she launched the boulders toward the Crimson Raider's direction followed by a combined fire blast from herself and J. As the fireball and boulders crashed into the Crimson Raiders, the two could see that not only were they buried but also sealed due to the boulders freezing over to make it look more like a new hill.
Seeing the Crimson Raiders were buried, Tyreen slowly flew down beside J with the Calypso chuckling at the hill left behind. J merely looked at the hill while Tyreen scuffed at this while making her way toward her brother's nearly charred robotic arm. Tyreen knelt for a bit before pressing her brother's arm button to have their camera Sentinal manifest in front of her. As soon as the sentinel appeared in front of her, she backed up and laughed while spreading her arms out.
"And we are live! Heh, well, not them. They're SUPER dead," Tyreen explained while moving to the side while swaying her left hand to the hill J was standing by. "And with a brand new member to the family. Please welcome your new God J! A Vault Hunter who has fallen for my godly charms,"
J turned his attention to Tyreen for a second before shifting his gaze back to the hill earning a chuckle from the Calypso as she turned her attention back to the camera.
"That's adorable. He's camera shy. Now back to any other Vault Thieves still out there. You thought you were going to win? Maybe next time, superfans...or not, that's just something people say. Game Over, Bitches!" Tyreen spoke before delivering a haymaker to the camera breaking its lens showing Tyreen walking up behind J wrapping her arms around his waist and teleporting both of them.
After a few minutes of silence, the hill exploded outward revealing Ava had surrounded the Vault Hunters in a sphere of energy. As the sphere dropped, Ava fell to her hands and knees panting heavily while closing her eyes trying to catch her breath. While Lilith and Tannis were trying to help the young Siren to her feet, Smoke walked out of the crater looking at the ground in deep thought. Moze saw that Ava was doing fine before turning her attention to Smoke and glared at him as she fast-walked to the inventor to grab his shoulder and forcefully turn him around. When she turned Smoke around, the next thing she saw was Smoke's Epicman function aimed directly at her face.
"Do not...fucking touch me...not right now...YOU GOT IT!" Smoke demanded with his eyes wide with rage.
Moze stood there unfazed while glaring at Smoke only for Lilith to walk up and slowly pull Moze back.
"We cannot be doing this right now," Lilith spoke while slowly lowering his arm cannon and looking back up at the sky as the ground shook. "Pandora...is the Great Vault.."
"Hello? Helo? Is anyone there? What have you done? The universe is doomed?!" An unknown voice called through Lilith's Echo-2.
Lilith and Tannis blinked at this before the historian made her way to the Echo device and picked it up.
"It can't be...could it?" Tannis whispered to herself.
"I don't know who the fuck it is but it sounds like he knows what's going on," Smoke said walking up to the Echo device and picking it up.
"This is Smoke...who is this?" Smoke asked looking around.
"Who? How did you get this - no, you know what? It doesn't matter. This is Typhon DeLeon. Listen up - you see that crazy beam of light shooting through the sky? Pretty cool, right? Well, that means the Great Vault is opening. And if it does, say goodbye to Pandora! So get your knickers to Nekrotafeyo. NOW!" Typhon was introduced before the Echo device went silent.
"...over here killers," Lilith whispered gaining Moze and Smoke's attention as they grouped up. "He said, Typhoon Deleon..."
"Impossible. He's been missing for decades ever since he vowed to find the Legendary planet of..."Tannis paused while blinking her eyes.
"Nekrotafeyo," Ava finished with amazement in her eyes. "Maya used to tell me stories about it,"
Suddenly the ground began to rumble once more causing the team to look around.
"What is going on?" Ava asked looking at the ground.
"Pandora is not a planet...it's the Great Vault..." Smoke answered looking at the ground before facing Lilith who nodded her head in agreement.
"And Tyreen intends to leech the planet-side monster within," Tannis added with a worried look.
"The Destroyer. It's still alive. That's what Tyreen meant when she told me she'd finish what I started.," Lilith spoke closing her eyes and sighing heavily.
"There IS still a Vault here. Vault Hunters, you should go and see what is inside. I imagine we will need every advantage we can get...especially with J on the other team now," Tannis notified earning a slow nod from Smoke.
"Yeah...advantage..." Smoke said going into the Vault along with Moze.
The two entered the Vault in silence before Moze cleared her throat.
"Did you know J was going to betray us?" Moze asked causing Smoke to stop in his tracks.
"Why are you asking stupid questions soldier?" Smoke asked looking over at Moze with half-opened eyes.
"It's not a stupid question. It's a serious one," Moze argued glaring at Smoke.
"If I knew he was going to betray the Crimson Raiders...then I would have planned out the complete annihilation of your boss and all under her..." Smoke said turning his attention forward while walking.
"Even Tannis?" Moze asked griping her hands into fists.
"I favor friendship over love...as painful as that is, "Smoke answered. "I do not expect you to understand that Moze..."
"What's that supposed to mean?!" Moze questioned as she ran in front of Smoke only for Smoke to bring his left hand forward to grab the soldier's neck.
"If you weren't so closed off with YOUR FUCKING FEELINGS AND JUST BEEN STRAIGHT FORWARD WITH J! MAYBE HE WOULDN'T HAVE BETRAYED US! EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT SOLDIER? OR IS YOUR DUTY SO MUCH MORE THAN FRIENDSHIP?!" Smoke questioned while lifting her off the ground while his grip tightened around Moze's neck.
The inventor glared into her eyes before sighing heavily and slowly placing her onto the ground only to walk past her.
"It doesn't matter what could have happened...J betrayed us without saying anything. All we can do is move forward and see what happens," Smoke said taking a blunt and placing it between his lips before lighting it. "As such, I gotta start upgrading the Epicman function..."
With that said the two checked the Vaults treasures for a bit before they left to meet up with Lilith again.
"Very good. When you return to Sanctuary, please go to my lab first. I suspect that the analyzer might be a missing piece in a puzzle I have been trying to solve," Tannis explained.
"Back to the ship everyone. We have to find Nekrotafeyo," Lilith commanded earning a nod from her team.
"And meet the Vault Hunter who started it all" Ava added with a smile.
-Sanctuary III-
As the two returned to Sanctuary, the first thing they heard was Claptrap panicking while flailing his arms over his head.
"The Destroyers gonna be released! We're all gonna die! I knew I should've joined the Children of the Vault!" Claptrap screamed while running around the table with Moze watching the unit going in the circle.
"In addition to the end of the world, now the Eridian slab in my lab, or my 'Lab Slab', has seemingly reactivated itself. Go investigate, Vault Hunter. The Eridians would have left nothing to chance. Perhaps they left us a final message!" Tannis notified earning a nod from Moze while Smoke made his way to the cargo bay catching the soldier's attention.
"Where are you going Smoke?"Moze asked with a raised brow.
"To do some major tinkering on my Epicman function," Smoke answered before coming to stop and glancing over to Moze. "Go check out the slab in Tannis' lab. I'll be there in a half an hour...tops,"
Moze nodded in agreement before making her way to Tannis' lab while Smoke made his way to the cargo bay.
-Cargo bay-
As Smoke made his way to the Cargo Bay, Ellie was the first to notice the inventor putting a mask over his mouth. The last time she saw him put the mask on, they were both working on Iron Bear.
"How's everything going Smoke?" Ellie asked walking over to the inventor as the scent of weed left the pipes of the mask.
"...bad...as you heard...J betrayed us so...I gotta upgrade my Epicman function to full-time use rather than limited," Smoke explained. "Wanna help me?"
"I don't see why not partner. Let's do this!" Ellie said with a happy chuckle while slapping her wrench.
-Ten Minutes Later-
Lilith commanded all available Crimson Raiders to the bridge causing both Moze and Smoke to make their way to the destination to meet with Lilith. As they meet outside of the bridge, Moze looked at Smoke his left arm was slimmer as well as human-like than it was before.
"Did you get enough time to finish upgrading your Epicman function?" Moze asked looking at the inventor's left arm.
"With Ellie's help. We were able to finish sooner than expected...and good thing too since Lilith called us to the bridge...so what happened with the slab in the lab?" Smoke said looking at Moze.
"A message from the one who killed the Eridians...calling herself...Nyriad," Moze answered looking to the bridge.
"Interesting...welp let's not keep our commander waiting," Smoke said with a sigh before taking the lead to the bridge.
As the two entered, they could see Lilith along with Tannis and Ava gathered and chatting with one another.
"So Nekrotafyo's real? I thought it was just a myth," Ava spoke still in awe.
"So did I. Typhon DeLeon disappeared on his expedition to the Eridian homeworld decades ago. It seems he found it after all," Tannis said with a smirk.
"Tyreen said The Destroyer would be free soon. It'll rip the planet apart from the inside. If Typhon DeLeon knows how to save Pandora, we have to find him," Lilith suggested while placing her hands on her hips in thought.
"So to the myth world Nekrotefeyo?" Smoke asked slipping his hands into his pockets while still wearing his weed mask as mist exited from the sides of it.
"To the myth world Nekrotefeyo," Lilith confirmed with a nod.
Moze nodded her head and made her way to the console to set their course to Nekrotefeyo.
"So...what's with the mask?" Lilith asked looking at Smoke head to toe.
"Not a fan of taking things serious but with J on the enemy side and unable to tell if he will attack us out of nowhere...I'm gonna have to start taking this a lot more seriously," Smoke answered as he inhaled loudly and exhale smoke from the side of his mask. "So weed twenty-four-seven until either J returns to our side or he lays dead at my feet,"
"Pretty cold for someone you call a friend," Lilith said crossing her arms under her bust.
"It's the best I can do right now because he is unpredictable. I have my hopes that he'll come back to us...but the realistic side of me is preparing me for the worst," Smoke said tilting his head while facing Lilith. "Better safe than sorry,"
"Okay, this might get weird, you guys. Hold on tight," Balex warned as Sanctuary traveled to the marked destination.
As they exited the warp, they came face to face with a planet with its back blown out while a pillar of light flowed from the front.
"Holy shit," Smoke and Ava said in unison while looking out the front window of Sanctuary.
"So this is the Eridian homeworld. After all this time..." Tannis said walking beside Smoke looking at the planet.
"No sense waiting around. Get down there, Vault Hunters. Find Typhon DeLeon," Lilith said looking at Moze and Smoke.
"You got it, boss. We'll get to it," Smoke said with a salute before turning his back on Lilith and making his way toward the Cargo Bay.
As soon as Smoke was far enough away, Lilith walked beside Moze while keeping her eyes locked to where the inventor went.
"Be cautious around Smoke...I don't know why but I feel he isn't himself," Lilith warned while glancing at the soldier who nodded her head before following after Smoke.
"The drop pod is all set yall. You all be careful down there," Ellie notified through comms.
-Nekrotafeyo-
Smoke exited from the drop pod and snapped his fingers causing his corrosive sentry to form before flying off to scout ahead. It did not take long before Moze also left the drop pod and scanned her surroundings. As her eyes locked onto Smoke, she saw him on his visor scouting out the area, almost like the time he used it to lead J to the bandit horde.
"Not wasting any time are you?" Moze asked standing behind Smoke while continuing to look around.
"The faster we get through this the faster I can help J on whatever the hell he is doing..." Smoke answered before exhaling loudly only to cough a second later. "Damn that's good..."
"Vault Hunters, we're tracking Typhon DeLeon's ECHO frequency and sending the coordinates to you," Lilith said through the ECHO-3 earning a slight nod from Smoke who had his sentry make its way to the marked area.
"This is all quite overwhelming. First Pandora was a Vault the entire time, now we've located the Eridian homeworld, and you're about to meet Typhon DeLeon in the flesh. If you'll excuse me, I must take a power nap in my saurian," Tannis said through her Siren powers before going quiet.
"...what do you have so far on recon?" Moze asked looking at Smoke now.
"Maliwan...not sure why since they are currently fighting over who is going to be the next head...unless this is a group that was told to come here and investigate...probably," Smoke said glancing over at Moze before going back to his sentry that saw Maliwan canisters. "There is also some wildlife...aggressive little shits,"
"Are they going to be a problem?" Moze asked with a raised brow.
"Pfft, please. They won't," Smoke replied before the sentry continued. "Let's head out. Iron Bear Mark II should be able to handle them without worry,"
"Roger that," Moze said with a nod before jumping back and manifesting Iron Bear around her.
As soon as Iron Bear manifested, Smoke closed his visor and would climb onto the mech's left shoulder.
"Speaking of which the fauna here is unhappy with Maliwan's equipment...but I'll keep tabs on enemy soldiers...if any," Smoke said with a smirk.
As Moze advanced, the creatures Smoke notified the soldier about sprang out of the ground and walls before rushing the mech. Moze scuffed at this ad began to burn them alive with the flame revolver while Smoke continued to scout ahead. Eventually, they came across a small clearing with a large creature in the center. Its form faced the mech before releasing a roar causing a horde of creatures to spring out of hiding and rush them.
"Need help?" Smoke asked looking around.
"I don't need help," Moze snapped at Smoke as she started to slaughter the creatures including the larger one.
Once she finished killing the aggressive wildlife, Smoke could not help but whistle while chuckling.
"Someone has a lot of pent-up anger," Smoke commented with a chuckle before Moze gritted her teeth.
"I wouldn't be so pissed if J did not turn on us!" Moze snapped as she shook Smoke off the head of Iron Bear causing the inventor to flip forward and land on the ground feet first while laughing.
"You wanna do this right here and right now girl? I'ma warn you right now...you aren't going to win," Smoke warned while rolling his shoulders back while his left arm shifted into his cannon mode but its form was more refined than before.
"Not without using your tech to shut the mech down," Moze pointed out earning a chuckle from Smoke who shook his head.
"Little girl...you have no idea what the fuck you're getting yourself into are you?" Smoke said tilting his head. "Fine let's deal with this bullshit here and now. After this, we stay focused on the mission at hand...deal? And don't worry...I won't use the shutdown code on your mech,"
The two looked at each other before Moze charged forward firing all her weapons at Smoke while the inventor merely raised his left hand creating a small black hole. Moze could not help but watch as her projectiles were sucked into the black hole which increased Smoke's shields. Seeing her projectiles being absorbed by Smoke, she chooses to charge in and try and slam her Bear Claws into the inventor's form. Instead of hitting Smoke, what she hit was the inventor's shields he gathered from her earlier attack to protect himself.
"My turn..." Smoke said narrowing his eyes while aiming his cannon at Iron Bears chest and firing a large beam of pure energy into the mechs chest.
Iron Bear Mark II was knocked back before coming to a complete stop. On the outside, there was no visual damage but on the inside, the systems were going haywire. This caused most of Iron Bear to glitch and even invert the controls. Moze was at a loss and even tried to hard restart her mech but to no avail. Just when she thought she found a means to get Iron Bear back to full power, the hatch to Iron Bear opened up to reveal Smoke reaching in to grab the soldier and pull her out with his right arm.
As Moze hung there trying to break out of the inventor's iron grasp, her eyes locked onto Smoke's to freeze in place. In Smoke's eyes were not the usual laid-back casual inventor but a scientist who was enraged and trying his best to contain it.
"Now do you understand?" Smoke asked narrowing his eyes. "You wanna bitch at someone? Bitch at J! Not me! Cause I'm just as pissed as you are. You got your way to express yourself...mine is by upgrading or making weapons...so I chose to upgrade my arm cannon. Did I want to do this? Fuck no! Did I want to tinker a little, yea! But because of J being so selfish I couldn't do that,"
Smoke groaned before releasing his hold on Moze and sat by the hatch leaning his head back and looking up at the sky.
"But he wants to learn...he wants to learn...even if it is bullshit," Smoke commented before closing his eyes and facing downward. "And we are the ones that got caught in the middle...so when we get J back...we'll have a nice long chat with him. Agreed?"
Moze sat in her chair in deep thought while looking down before closing her eyes and nodding her head in agreement.
"A very long talk," Moze said opening her eyes to look up at Smoke.
"Yeah. Now let's get back to work shall we?" Smoke said opening his eyes and closing her hatch while his left arm shifted back to normal.
"Hey VH looks like Maliwan tried to set up a Catch-A-Ride before they got ate. Ya might be able to reroute power from that force field," Ellie suggested on the Echo-3.
"...hell I was about to let Corah here hack it but...okay. It'd make things faster that's for sure," Smoke replied with a chuckle. "What do you say, soldier?"
"Works for me," Moze spoke as she turned Iron Bear to make its way toward the controls for the force-field marked on her screen by Smoke.
Once Iron Bear was close enough, Smoke hoped off and brought his left hand gripped it causing his flamethrower to spew flames in a means to burn the plant life away from the controls. As soon as the controls were visible, Smoke chuckled at this before swaying his left hand over it redirecting the force field's power to the Catch-A-Ride.
"Whoo! A Catch-A-Ride on the legendary planet of Nekrofeyo! How about that? Now you can ride to Mr. DeLeon in style!" Elli cheered on the Echo-3.
"Ellie ain't wrong. We're going in style," Smoke said with a chuckle while tilting his head looking at Iron Bear. "And I'm driving,"
Moze rolled her eyes before jumping out of Iron Bear allowing her to softly land on the ground. As soon as Moze touched the ground, Smoke jumped up to enter Iron Bear while shifting his arm into the Epicman function. Just like the time they went to rescue Tannis, Iron Bear X was levitating off the ground while turning to face the soldier.
"And I will also bring hell with me," Smoke said grinning while stretching his right hand out for Moze to hop on.
Moze could not help but shiver at this before walking onto Iron Bear X's hand. Once Moze was on the mech's hand, he pulled her close so she could enter the cockpit. Upon entering Iron Bear, Smoke pressed the button to fuse. Its form was more slime causing the same fusion that fought the Agonizer 9000 to form.
"Been a while since I've seen this form," Moze said looking at the guns but widening her eyes seeing that they were bigger than before. "Why are the guns bigger?"
"Because it's not just me in this mech Moze. You're also part of it now. As such, Iron Bear X: Sentinal variant's firepower is doubled. Thus why the weapons are bigger," Smoke explained with a chuckle. "AND you don't have to choose. Hell, you can fire all of them for all I care!"
Moze looked at the weapons and smirked slightly as they continued onward.
"Now let's upgrade this bad boy with a Catch-A-Ride," Smoke spoke up with a chuckle.
"There's more?" Moze asked looking at Smoke.
"Pfft, please. There's always more," Smoke said glancing up at Moze before looking forward and having Iron Bear fly to the Catch-A-Ride platform.
With a sway of the inventors right over the platform lit up before the modified armored truck manifested in front of them. Iron Bear X placed its left hand over the trunk before the vehicle backed up and split into five pieces to connect to the mech. Thanks to the modified truck, its form was more balanced giving it more armor.
"Let's hit it," Smoke said as Iron Bear X flew off.
"And I wake, vicious and refreshed! You know, Typhoon DeLeon was the reason I became an Eridian researcher. If anyone knows how to save the universe, it's him, " Tannis spoke through her telepathy causing Smoke to scuff while blushing.
"...I can save the universe...I just need prep time," Smoke said with his half-opened eyes. "And a whole shit ton of weed,"
"Somehow, the Calypsos knew about the Destroyer being imprisoned inside Pandora. That was their goal all along. Should Tyreen leech the Destroyer...well...you are what you eat. And with J helping her...it would become that much more difficult," Tannis voiced telepathically again.
"That we can agree on...a Destroyer Siren and a chaotic Juggernaut...not a combo I would like to fight," Smoke commented with a faint groan.
They tore through the creatures of Nekrotafeyo and made their way toward the marked destination in silence and without any trouble. Eventually, they reached their destination to find what looked like a dead-end causing Moze to raise her brow.
"Are you sure the marker is here? It's a dead-end," Moze pointed out while glaring at Smoke.
"Shaddap Moze. It's here," Smok said swaying his hands outward to the dead-end revealing a hidden cave.
"See! The entrance was just masked by a camouflage system," Smoke pointed out looking over at Moze just as annoyed.
"With Iron Bear X. Nothing can hide from us,"
"Whatever," Moze said softly while looking away.
"God. Being such a brat now. If you got issues then keep them to yourself. I don't know if you know but I don't give a shit what is on your jarhead mind. You got issues for J then cool. I ain't your punching bag to make you feel better," Smoke lectured before looking forward to scuffing.
"If you two are done arguing, I am ecstatic to see you. Typhoon DeLeon is waiting for you. Please. Enter," A robotic voice spoke as the camouflage faded allowing the Vault Hunters entry.
Seeing the way open, the modified truck separated from Iron Bear X before the mech started to deconstruct. Both Smoke and Moze landed on the ground before they entered the cave with the inventor looking at the robot before them.
"Sup," Smoke said with a slight wave.
"Greetings. I am Grouse, primary steward to Typhoon DeLeon. Because my counterpart is inferior in every way. DeLeon has charged ME with greeting you. So...greeting," Grouse introduced just as Moze caught up with the inventor.
"Well...you have a way with greeting guests," Smoke said with a soft chuckle.
"This way please," Grouse spoke turning and levitating off with the two Vault Hunter.
As they walked through the cave, it did not take long before they came to a small clearing to reveal a makeshift home. Smoke could not help but nod his head impressed at the structures built with scrap.
"Not bad," Smoke said before looking forward to seeing the security bot levitating to a medical bot.
"Hey, Vault Hunters! I'm Sparrow. Typhoon DeLeon asked me to show you around!" Sparrow greeted cheerfully.
"You see now that's a greeting," Smoke pointed out with a chuckle.
"Sparrow, what the hell? Typhoon says the universe is in danger! We don't have time for a tour," Grouse interrupted with a depressed tone.
"Usually I am all for a tour but we are short on time so...maybe some other time," Smoke said rubbing the back of his head.
"There's always time for a tour!" Sparrow shouted causing Moze to shake her head.
"No there isn't," Moze corrected now glaring at the medical bot.
"See. Time is precious Sparrow," Grouse spoke shoving the medical bot out of the way as Moze and Smoke followed him.
As Smoke passed Sparrow, he could not help but place his hand on the medical bots shoulder to give him a light pat. Upon following Grouse, they came across a large shadow in which Smoke could not help but narrow his eyes and prepare his cannon arm. Moze on the other hand brought her hand over to the inventor's left arm to ease his worry while both Vault Hunters turned their sights on the light seeing a dwarf.
"What took you so long Vault Hunters? We got a universe to save!" The man spoke as he turned revealing his features. "What? You were expecting someone less handsome?"
"...I am speechless..." Smoke said blinking his eyes while looking at the legendary Vault Hunter. "I thought you'd be...well taller...and bulkier,"
Moze could only roll her eyes.
"It's the looks and experience that counts kid...anyway, glad you made it! Bet it was a schlep! Here's a little somethin' for makin' the trip," Typhoon spoke pulling out a strange gun from his backpack and aiming it at the wall only o charge it up and fire out a weapon.
Smoke watched wide-eyed at this before chuckling.
