Chapter Two: The Capture
Slowly I opened my eyes, I gave out a yawn as I began to unfurl my wings inviting the cool air to latch onto my body. I detached myself from the rock of the cave as I began to flap my wings getting ready to exit the cave.
After a few twists and turns up towards the exit of the cave, I was met with the sight of a full moon and jungle trees spanning the horizon. I looked towards the side of the cave, there were hundreds of Vampire Bats all standing about and discussing their lives.
I needed to find Aidan, but it slipped my mind that I had duties at the Medical Roost. As the Assistant Chief Medic, it was my job to do most of the things there. The other day I was off and I forgot about it.
"Crap," I muttered to myself as I looked back into the cave. I was getting ready to go back in when I felt a hand on my shoulder, I turned around and saw Aidan looking at me. "So what do you want to do?" He was smiling, such a nice bat.
"Sadly, I can't do anything." I said as I took off his hand, "I got medical duties." His smile slowly faded into slight disappointment, "Hm, alright. Well, tell me when your done, Bye!" He quickly shot out towards some other bats and I began to fly down into the depths of the cave.
There should be several other bats in the Medical Roost, they called it that even though in the day no one slept there. On a regular day, there weren't many bats that got injured. Hopefully, this would be a regular day.
When I made it into the roost there was one of the newer medics, Micheal. For now, he was stuck treating minor injuries, while I had to make sure we had enough herbs and do the harder job of treating harder injuries.
I finally made my way into the Medical Roost as I landed I walked towards the wall and leaned against it as I saw Micheal turn to face me. "Hello, Yuriel." I looked at him and I gave him a smile, "How are you?" I asked.
"Good, no one's come in with any issues."
"Yet," I said, It was always yet. Sooner or later someone's going to come in and say they're dying and it's gonna be my job to fix it. "Now I have to make sure we have enough herbs in stock."
I walked over towards a part of the roost that was chiseled out to hold materials and herbs alike. I counted them all, we were short on one of the leaves that could knock you out for weeks if you weren't careful. "We're short on this," I pointed at the leaves, "I'll go out searching for it tomorrow, I'll have to find Uno to cover for me."
I walked over towards the edge of the Roost that overlooked part of the cave and which had the Chief's Priest roost near it. I wondered what they were doing, Hudson and him. Probably some sort of thing with Nocturna or Zotz.
I wasn't very religious but I made sure to do my part and pray to both of them whenever I had time and a reason to.
After some time of relaxing inside of the Medical Roost still, no bats had come up to us and requested any aid. But in the distance I heard the fluttering of wings, most likely the sun was up and I turned to Micheal who was still inside of the Medical Roost.
"I think the sun's coming up." He turned to me surprised by my announcement, I didn't really speak much during medical duties, "So, we're done for today. See you tomorrow."
I walked towards the edge of the Roost and unfurled my wings as I jumped into the air and flapped my wings starting to ascend towards the top of the cave where all of the bats roosted. I grabbed onto the cave's rock and wrapped myself in wings to warm myself up in the night.
With the sound of bats flooding into the cave I closed my eyes and fell asleep in the dimly lit cave.
Happy Hunting
Earlier in the night, William crawled in the Jungle canopy with his partner by his side, Jacob. They each had a rifle strapped onto their back, William looked at his partner by his side. "Grab and load your Rifle, we're near some Spectral Bats."
With that the pair unslung their Rifle, grabbing a pouch on their side and taking out a Dart that was able to knock out a bat. They loaded into the rifle easily, like they had hundreds of times before on other jobs.
"Alright, see that tree right there?" William pointed up slightly at a large tree their were two bats that looked as if they were talking to each other, William bolted the Rifle with Jacob following suit, "On my count."
"One." They put their fingers near the trigger getting ready to fire.
"Two." They aimed in.
"Three. They fired, hitting the bats in the back as they looked at each other falling unconscious as they began to fall down into the Jungles Canopy. "Alright, let's grab 'em. We got another bat species they want us to catch later, but too soon today."
They walked through the Canopy and found the two bats, they were very large but it wasn't the first time handling bats. They grabbed the bats and walked in the Jungle Canopy and began to walk towards their vehicle that was located slightly farther away.
After a while of walking there, they unlocked the trunk and opened a cage, placing the two bats inside of it. They locked it and closed the trunk entering the car, William at the steering wheel and Jacob at the seat next to him.
"Alright, let's drop these off to the Canadian's," William said looking at Jacob as he started the engine. "Don't forget tomorrow we have to grab another species for them, and risk our asses doing it."
"We're getting enough money to get the hell out of here once we get them it." William said as he started to drive, "Now let's just get going."
An avoidable accident
I woke up, I had to go towards the Medical Roost and Check-in, tell whoever was in there today I had to go out and find some herbs. I detached my claws from the rock in my roost and began to flap my wings as I flew downwards into the cave.
I saw other bats emerging from their roost as I descended, old and young flew out of the cave to go hunt or do other things. I found the Medical Roost and landed at the edge of it, I looked around and saw another bat, it was still Micheal.
"Hey!" I shouted at him as I walked towards him tapping his shoulder, he turned. "What is it?" He asked me as I looked him in the eyes, "I'm going out to get those herbs that were missing."
"If the Chief Medic or someone comes in tell them I'm off foraging for medicinal herbs." I told him as I unfurled my wings walking back towards the edge, "Got it?"
"Yes, Yuriel," Micheal said as I jumped off from the Medical Roost and began to fly upwards towards the exit of the Jungle. Many bats congregated along the edge of the outside of the cave chatting to each other.
I flew down into the Jungle Canopy, the herb that grew on these vines near the trees. I had to be careful when searching for these things, some predators roamed the ground in the night.
I flew moderately close to the ground about two meters above it looking around the large trunks of the Jungle Trees. The night tonight was cool and felt nice on my wings as I flew around the area.
I flew into a few bats on my way, they didn't very much care. Most of them were newborns playing around with each other, it was cute. But the area I was searching didn't have the herb.
"Maybe the lake?" I said to myself as I began to fly over to it. It had many herbs that were commonly used for minor cuts and such. The lake tree's maybe had some of the sleeping herbs I needed for us.
Once I made it to the lake I noticed the reflection it had with the stars in the sky, it shined so very bright. I began to fly through the Jungle Canopy, still no sign of anything. I sighed and began to fly up towards a tree branch and took a rest. I'd look again soon after I caught my breath and such.
The stars were amazing on this night, I just stood for a moment taking it in. That was when I felt my heart race, a rushing pain entered my body. I looked to my side, I was fearful another Bat had conjured sound to make a spear. The Chief Priest had several people about this, and I was informed about it aswel.
Luckily for me, it wasn't a spear it was a dart. I began to feel dizzy and I shouted, "Help!" But I didn't think anyone was able to hear me. I fall to the ground my eyes slowly closing as I descended, "Anyone… Please?!" I shouted once more as the rush of sleep or something like that overcame me.
I felt myself land in a bed of leaves and later picked up, that's when sleep fully overcame me and I fell into an unconscious state.
