Chapter Five: Annoying Birds

I flew on despite the injury is sustained from the bat I encountered earlier. I knew how to heal the injury, but I had no knowledge as to if the same herbs from the jungle grew here. Wouldn't be worth the risk to try the herbs that looked similar to the ones there in case there were any adverse effects.

I glanced at the wound, it was on my right hand. Sadly, that was the hand I used most of the time. I sighed as I continue to fly onwards towards the lights, they were so close to me and maybe there weren't as many bats there that would outright try to murder me because of this band.

But, these thoughts left my mind for the time being as I finally entered into the place of lights. I was met with the strangest sounds, everything was so loud, bright, and had a different smell than the jungle. I looked down into the streets after I landed on a tall building, there was so much machinery moving by itself.

I had to guess that the humans built it, as they were all over the place. They were so advanced, far greater than any animal could ever hope to accomplish. After I shook myself out of my wonder I began to fly up and into the dense buildings in hopes of finding any bats, that weren't the ones I experienced earlier.

For a while I flew, searching throughout the night. It was tiring, I took one break to go and drink from an animal. But the only thing I could find was a rat in the alleyways between all the buildings. I bit into its neck and killed it and then drank it, its blood was better than the mice in the human building I was in, but basically, everything was better than that place's food.

I then stumbled upon a tower, I flew toward a roof near it and stared at it. It looked old and worn out, maybe some sort of bats lived here. But suddenly all those thoughts were caught off as I heard a loud, Bong Bong Bong imminent from the tower.

It disoriented me for a moment. I guess that crossed out the tower from where bats would live, why would anything even want to live in somewhere that was so loud? While I wondered I heard someone yelling behind me, "You're breaking the owl's ordinance!" along with another voice screaming, "Murder was enough for you Silverwing bastards was it!?"

I turned to see two large birds flying towards me, one screaming that I was breaking an ordinance I knew nothing of and one screaming that I was a murderer. I knew I didn't have enough time to fly off and away from them so I did what was logical for me. I put my wings over my body, bracing for the impact.

The bird crashed into me sending me onto the roof of the building I was on. Unfortunately for me, I hit my head on the roof and I blacked out. This wasn't going to be a fun journey for a tour guide, was it?

Murder in the first degree

The owl stood in front of a larger crowd than before, now it was filled with not only his fellow owls. Now it was filled with birds from different parts of the kingdom, and they were all gathered to discuss the death of a pigeon.

The owl began to speak, "As you all know we are here to speak on the murder of one of the pigeons." The owl coughed as he spoke once more, "The pigeons believe the culprits to be the Silverwing colony retaliating for the burning of tree haven."

"We have heard talk among our alliances and ultimately, no bats will be allowed in the night. Those who are found are to be sentenced to death as lawbreakers of the new ordinance." The owl paused for a moment, "But if you find a Silverwing, question them for disposing of them."

"That is all." The owl spoke before walking off towards multiple owls standing readily near a part of a wall.

"General," Said one of the owls saluting, the general doing the same before speaking. "Captain, I want you to report to me later, we need to discuss something about the Silverwing and Brightwing colony."

The captain nodded, "Yes, General."

I slowly awoke, my head aching. I was restrained by one of the birds, they were holding me hard on the hard wooden floor, and up above were many other birds perched onto the drafters. I then tried to get the bird off me but the bird hissed at me, "Don't try it."

For now, until I needed to I would take this bird's horrible advice. I also wondered if the bird would answer some questions I had, it was better to ask than to be left in the dark anyways.

I turned my head to try and look up at the bird and spoke, "Could I perhaps ask you some questions?" The bird looked at me and responded, "Fine, make them quick. The captain will be here soon."

I guess I had to be quick with this, and so I asked my first question, "What kind of birds are you?" I mean it was a basic question so, I hope this bird would be able to answer it. The bird looked like he was resisting laughter, "Were pigeons… I can't believe it, are you bats getting dumber?"

I really didn't like being called a dumbass but I still had one more question, "Alright, what's a Silverwing?" I think the pigeon now just thought I was stupid at this point, "That's what you are! Oh my god, you bats are getting-" The pigeon cut himself off as echoes of voices saying, "The captain has arrived!"

I looked up to see a slightly larger pigeon fly down and make its way towards another pigeon. The pigeon saluted before speaking, "Captain, two of our privates found a Silverwing breaking the new ordinance."

The captain gave a nod to the pigeon before walking over towards me, "What is your name, Silverwing." The pigeon's voice was demanding and so I answered quickly, "Yuriel Anderson."

The captain spoke back, "I can believe your first name, but not the last." The captain's next words were fierce and loud, "You can't fool me, bats here go by their first name and then what time of bat they are."

The pigeon moved his head closer to mine before speaking, "Don't test me."

Hopefully, I'd be able to give this pigeon his answers and he wouldn't murder me, or worse. But I doubt I had a good enough chance for that. "Now, let's start with the real questions."

"What were you doing around the tower?" The pigeon asked now pacing back and forth, his eyes locked onto me. "I'm searching for a tour guide. I'm lost and not from here." I hoped my answer was good enough for him.

The pigeon stopped, turning to me. "Amazing cover story, Silverwing." The pigeon spat at the ground, "I can see through your lies. You were spying on us, reporting back information to the rest of your miserable bat elders so that they could kill another of our kind!"

I see this pigeon wasn't taking my answers. I was about to speak before the pigeon cut me off, "Where is your colony." I was pissed at this pigeon so my response wasn't the best, "I told you asshole! I'm not from here, my colony's far away from us!"

The pigeon was taken aback for a second, "Fine then! So be it." The captain turned to the pigeon he talked to earlier, "Sergeant, dispose of this uncooperative bat. Let this be our revenge for the death of Private Emerson by the hands of these disgusting bats."

The Sergeant spoke, "Yes, sir! I have it under control." The captain nodded as he took flight leaving the tower.

The pigeon looked up into the drafters and shouted, "What do we do with uncooperative prisoners?" The pigeons in the drafters began to shout in an unharmonious manner, Peck. It was disturbing and I wouldn't have it, they were going to murder me here.

I was innocent, I hadn't committed any crime! But, these pigeons were going to put me to death for it. I looked over at the pigeon's foot that was holding me down, I could bite it and get him off me, the rest I had to do was to try and dodge the many pigeons perched on the drafters while I escaped.

But that would be better than being executed for nothing. So I bit into the pigeon's foot and expectedly, the pigeon yelped and hopped back. With the pigeon off my wings, it was my time to get out.

As soon as I began to fly I heard the pigeons barking orders at each other, "Kill them!" "Grab them!" "Don't let it get away like the other two!". It was interesting, to say the least.

As I flew I had to veer out of the way of pigeons darting at me and the drafters. Luckily I was maneuvering well despite the injury on my hand. As soon as I saw the night sky through one of the windows I darted out as fast as I could and flew as fast as possible.

For at least an hour I flew, checking my surroundings often and sticking in areas that weren't so open. I decided to take a break on a building I found that I believed to be a cathedral, it was large and had a spire next to it.

I panted as I looked around me, in the distance there were no birds but when I checked behind me I nearly fell off the building. "Oh, I didn't mean to scare you."

Behind me was a white bat it was slightly larger than me and it spoke again, "I see your hand is injured, would you like me to help you with it?" Well, this was the second bat I met, and it looks like weren't a jerk like the first one I met here.

I was going to take this bat's help, after all this wound might get infected, and then boom, there goes my hand. "Sure, why not." I said as the bat unfurled his wings and began to fly, "Follow me then, and, what might your name be?"

I unfurled my wings quickly and began to fly up to him as I spoke, "Yuriel."
