Chapter Six: Recovery

I followed the white bat up towards the spire, it wasn't much of a flight as it was over within a minute. The bat flew up towards what appeared to be a beast resting on the spire, I hesitated for a moment, the other bat must've known it already as he turned around and spoke, "They're stone, you don't need to fear them."

He then swiftly flew into the open mouth of the stone creature. I trusted him currently, he hadn't tried to kill me yet so, It didn't hurt to trust him for now. I flew after him, there were many twists and turns inside of the beast. When I finally got out of the labyrinth of it I discovered the old bat standing on wooden beams that appeared to be the only ground here.

I flew next to him and looked around, there were several beams above us, they had plants and herbs everywhere, I guess he was a medical bat as well. I looked at the bat, he unfurled his wings and moved up, and grabbed out a weirdly patterned leave.

He began to fly back down towards me and spoke, "Alright, this herb should heal up your wound in about a day or so." He said as he tore part of it and placed it onto my hand, wrapping it in it. I flinched for a moment as it stung.

"Thank you… you never mentioned your name what is it?" I asked, looking down at my hand. He turned and spoke to me, "Zephyr, if you have any other questions you may ask them."

I asked him the first question that came to my mind, "Where am I? Because I'm from this place called a jungle, I believe it's down south from here." The older white bat paused for a moment before speaking, "You in the northern realms, ruled by the owl, King Boreal. He commands most of the animals within the realm."

Zephyr paused for a moment before he continued, "If you're not from here that means you're not familiar with the laws of this place. Bats in the northern realms are prohibited from flying in the daylight."

"The reason for this is because of a great war of birds and the beasts, it took place hundreds of years ago. The bat kingdom was pressured into choosing aside but choose to remain neutral, away from the conflict." Zephyr breathed as he continued, "After the conflict had ended with no side winning an alliance between both the beasts and birds were formed."

"The owls took over control of the birds and beasts becoming the rulers of both sides, becoming the rulers of the northern realms. With several meetings between them all they decided to create laws to protect the natural order, but one of the laws was meant to shun the bats who fought on no side. The bats were prohibited from flying in the day sky and forced to fly in the night."

"But," Zephyr spoke, "Now it appears that bats are also being banned from flying in the night as well."

I looked at zephyr shocked, this place was very different from the jungle. Bats there were allowed to fly within the sunlight, there wasn't any law against it. But you were fair game to some of the few birds that rarely ate bats.

"Why?" I asked, "Why are bats being banned from flying in the night? If they can't fly at day or night that's just sentencing their kind to death here?" Zephyr looked at me as he spoke, "There are many reasons. Do you wish for me to tell you them?"

I nodded waiting for him to speak, "It started with the Silverwing colony, one of their kind looking at the sun and escaping from an owl that was trying to enforce the law. A squadron of the owls called the "Owl Security Unit" was sent in to keep the natural order of things and to arrest and kill the lawbreaker."

Zephyr sighed as he continued, "The colony refused to and was met with hell, the Owl Security Unit set their roost ablaze to keep the natural order going, an eye for an eye. But here in this city, a pigeon was killed by what is believed to be the Silverwing colony." Zephyr paused to breathe and continued, "From what I heard the owls were going to only outlaw the Silverwing colony from the night but due to the outrage from the other bird's all bats were outlawed from flying in the night."

I looked at Zephyr and spoke, "Alright I have another question, why are the bats here so concerned about this?" I raised my arm to show him the black band that was on my arm. Zephyr looked for a moment before he spoke, "Ah yes, bands."

"The bats here have no straight opinion on them, some believe them to be cursed and some believe them to be a sign of Nocturna's Promise." I stared at him confused, "Nocturna's promise? I'm sorry I've never heard of that but I have heard about Nocturna."

"Oh, alright. Bat's here believe the bands are a sign of Nocturna's Promise where it is said that Nocturna has promised one day that bats within the northern realms will be allowed to fly once in the daylight once more."

I looked at him and nodded, "Alright, I believe that this is my final question. So, in my colony, I'm the Assistant Chief Medic. I know all the herbs there but I don't know if the herbs here are similar to the ones in my home."

Zephyr looked at the herbs he had hanging up and then back to me, "Yes, the herbs here should be different. I have many different herbs here, would you like me to speak to you about them?" I looked at him and nodded with a smile, I should be able to take care of myself here after I get the information about all of these plants.

And with my response, Zephyr began to speak on all the different types of herbs that he had housed in this place, he spoke about herbs that could disinfect wounds as they held a sort of healing liquid inside of them, and then some that could knock out a bat for days if it wasn't consumed in small parts.

At the end of his speech I yawned, I was tired and this was a lot of information for me to know now. So I flew up towards one of the empty beams and roosted on it and told Zephyr I was going to rest for the night.
