Tails was sitting in the subway, waiting for the station to arrive. He was dozing off, as he had spent the entire day looking around Station Square. He was window-shopping what he could get for Cosmo's birthday. Cosmo had been back for over 2 years now and has been living with him for all that time. (Vanilla had let out a gasp of disapproval when she heard about this.) Turned out that when a Seedrian dies, they drop their seed as a way to connect themselves to the mortal world. Tending and caring for the plant appropriately, which Tails had learned to do, of course, had created enough energy for the spirit of Cosmo to come back. When she first came back, however, was a sight to behold, and something that Tails tried his hardest to forget. After that, however, she looked just like the old Cosmo he knew and loved. Of course, there were some things off, such as Cosmo being a bit taller and having a different colored flower. (It went from cerise to cinnabar.)
Anyways, something that Tails still had an issue with was relating to her. This was the second time he was celebrating her birthday, and he had no idea what to get her. She was a Seedrian, and he was a Mobian. The difference between the two species made it puzzling at times in day to day life.
"Cosmo, I got you this rose because it reminded me of you!" Tails exclaimed excitedly.
"Oh! Well...thank you, Tails." Cosmo tilted her head in confusion.
The next day, Cosmo got him a roadkill rabbit because it reminded her of him.
Tails fell asleep on the train thinking of his beloved waifu, and when he woke up the train just arrived at the station he needed to get off. He was walking out of the station when he saw a person in a shopping cart waving at him. Tails usually didn't engage with people who lived in shopping carts, but something about this person intrigued him. Maybe it was all the pots of plants and other gardening related things that were kept inside the said shopping cart.
Tails needed to get things that weren't related to plants inside his brain again.
"Come here, kid. I think I might have some things that might interest you." The person had a non-raspy voice, which was what Tails expected from the moment he saw the person. Tails didn't feel like that was too big of an assumption, considering the person was wearing a gardener's hat that completely covered his face; 3 pairs of crinkly, old jackets; and very ripped jeans that showed just enough skin to tell Tails that whoever this person was had a pale peach skin.
"So um...what are you selling?" Tails asked, peering towards the carrier.
"Stuff. Magical stuff. Stuff you would never see anywhere else! And some stickers." They pulled out pretty looking stickers that looked a lot like Cosmo's flower. Tails raised his eyebrows when he saw that and took a closer look.
"These look great. How much are these?"
"Oh, you can keep that one. You stick them onto your skin and it leaves a little mark that goes away after a couple of days. It's like a fake tattoo." As they explained, they handed the sticker to Tails for him to keep.
"Huh. Thanks!" Tails removed his glove and placed the sticker on the back of his hand. He looked into the cart some more, hoping there was something to buy. (He felt bad for them) But, against Tails' wishes, there was nothing that fancied his interest. After apologizing multiple times and offering to pay for the sticker, Tails walked away with not a single change minus the sticker that was now on the back of his hand.
"Cosmo~ I'm home!" Tails exclaimed as he unlocked the front door and ran in. Every day is exciting when you have the love of your life by your side.
"Tails! You're home!" Cosmo got up from the couch she was sitting on and tackled him into a hug. She was the sweetest girl Tails could ask for.
"Tails, you smell so nice today! Did you stop by a flower shop?" She let go of him and placed her hands on his shoulders, while her eyes were going all over his face and body to try and get any hint of where the nice smell was coming from.
Tails blushed and just chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck and looking away. It was still difficult for him to look directly into her eyes when she was so up close. "I might have, I'm not so sure. Although...if you want, I can go back through my steps to see where I got this nice smell you're talking about."
"That won't be necessary. Anyways, I was waiting for you because I made some salads!" She hopped over to the kitchen and showed him two bowls. One was full of cabbages and lettuce, and the other one was the same, except with sweetening sauce and a bit of chopped bacon on top of it.
"That sounds amazing, Cosmo! It looks great as well." He went over and sat down at the table, ready to dig into his girlfriend's cooking. After that encounter with the homeless guy, he was starving for some reason. He dug into the salad but was strangely more interested in the chopped bacon. A lot more so than usual might I add, as he preferred to have a healthy diet.
"Hey, Cosmo...do you mind if I get some more bacon?" Tails asked cautiously, not wanting to cause any more trouble than it was worth.
"Of course! Let me fry you up some more. How many strips do you want?" Cosmo got up from her seat and went back to the electric stove to heat it up for her pan. Then she went to the fridge to grab as many bacon strips he wanted.
"Oh, just um..maybe 2" Tails felt weird asking this from her. Why did it feel so weird? Why did he want bacon?
All of that worry went away when the sound and smell of that crispy bacon reached his sensory systems.
After that wonderful meal, Tails went to the garden out back to catch up on his flowers. While tending for Cosmo back when she was just a plant, Tails learned everything he could know about gardening. He was determined to keep the seed of Cosmo alive back then, and that caused him to master gardening as one of his skillsets. Now, he used those skills to create a wonderful garden in his backyard along with his plant bae. He spent most of his time out in the garden now, sometimes more so than inside the workshop. It was an activity that he could do with Cosmo, together. And that was more important to him than engineering.
"Cosmo, I feel like our number of plants are just getting way too out of hand." Tails giggled, flowing his hands along with the plant's leaves. He reached for the gardener's hat that he always hung on the doorknob back indoors, but it seemed to be resting on the crates instead. Weird.
"Well, I'm not the one who keeps bringing in more saying, "But these are too pretty, Cosmo!", am I?" Cosmo did her best Tails impression, giggling as well in return.
The two young lovers laughed together in the middle of the garden and went on with doing their work around the place. Tails gave them water and fixed their soil, while Cosmo worked her 'seedrian magic', as she liked to call them on the flowers. The flower garden was looking to be a beautiful place for the two to grow up and share fond memories of.
The day passed, and Cosmo went to sleep before Tails was finished with his tasks. Tails had quite a lot of work to do, so he stayed in the workshop. After Cosmo came back, Tails mostly returned to his original passion, engineering, although he still spent plenty of time gardening. That didn't mean he stopped liking planes though, as when it came to planes, he was the literal smartest person on Mobius. He ran his hand across the wing of his beloved Tornado, but he felt a slight sting. He jumped, shaking his hand to wave the pain away, and scowled slightly. "That was weird…" He wondered, staring at his hand. There was no reason for it to static like that, considering he was wearing gloves. He shrugged it off though. It was late, he didn't feel like this was important enough to warrant a thorough examination, and he wanted to go to sleep.
Unfortunately, he couldn't go to sleep with Cosmo, since Vanilla forbade it. If Vanilla couldn't make the two lovebirds live separately while they were underage, the least she could do was to make sure they had separate bedrooms. He knocked on Cosmo's door and told her, "Good night, Cosmo," before going to his room. He fell asleep very easily and had a dream about roast chicken. Tasty

"Fuck off"
Tails woke up the next day with his namesakes safely cuddled up in his arms. He smiled, as his tails always made for the best pair of body pillows for him to hug. If they weren't used for snuggling, they could always be used as a pillow and blanket. As Cosmo once said, you haven't truly spooned anyone until you've spooned someone with two, massive, fluffy tails. The benefits of being a disgusting, repulsive, filthy mutant.
After that whole ordeal, Tails went to the kitchen to get some morning coffee. He was not a morning person unlike Cosmo, who woke up at the break of dawn. It made sense, he supposed, since she was a plant and plants needed sunlight more than anything. He recalled a conversation he had with Cosmo once.
"Cosmo, do you get to make sugar from sunlight?"
"No, I get it from you! Kiss But no, I actually do photosynthesize."
Weird.
"Tails, what are you doing up so early?" Cosmo asked as she walked into the room, rubbing her eyes.
"Early? What time is it?" Tails checked the clock and realized he had woken up earlier than Cosmo usually did. In fact, he barely slept at all. "That's weird, I was pretty tired last night, but I don't feel tired at all." Tails pondered for a minute but ultimately shrugged it off. He poured himself a hot cup of coffee and munched on some beef jerky he found in the cabinets. He leaned against the kitchen counter while he ate, planning out what to do for the day.
Cosmo had a playdate planned with her friends, so Tails was left to his own toys to play with and spend the time on. So basically, another Tuesday for the two-tailed fox. While the fox was waiting for the inspiration to come to him, his left hand started cramping. A lot. It cramped so much that Tails fell down to the ground, gripped his left wrist with his right hand, and screamed.
He screamed and screamed and screamed until his throat got a little scratchy from all that screaming, so he got up and walked over to the nearby store to get some cherry throat lozenges. While he was there, he purchased a new mug since he dropped the cup of coffee when his hand started cramping, an extra package of beef jerky, read a part of a science magazine, and got a foot massage. By the time he returned, his hand cramp had subsided and his hands were back to normal, meaning he was free to go back to his regularly scheduled activity.
However, Tails was not ready to let this go. He wanted to know why his hand cramped so suddenly when all he was doing was tapping the surface of a wooden desk. He took his glove off, wondering if that had anything to do with it, and saw that the plant sticker had faded away, leaving a cute little tattoo of a leaf. He remembered that weird salesman guy saying it would be like a temporary tattoo and relaxed since he had an irrational fear of those things being stuck onto his skin. He shivered at the thought of getting an actual tattoo and checked the other side of his hand. Nothing. As to be expected, to be honest. What did he expect to find there?
"I'm being silly. It was a random muscle spasm. Let's just get back to work... Who am I talking to?"
Other than that random muscle spasm earlier in the day, things went great. Tails got on working with the new propeller and engine for his new Tornado prototype. He was getting tired of the old Tornado, so he decided that a change was long-awaited in the form of a cooler, faster, deadlier, and most importantly, cooler plane. However, a day only has 24 hours for the fox boy, and he needed to spend quite a bit of that time sleeping to make sure he wouldn't die of exhaustion. He was also really hungry, as working on that plane all day long had taken quite a toll on him. He served himself a foot-long sub with extra ham and headed to bed.
When Tails went to bed to get his good night's sleep, he fell asleep the moment his head touched the pillow. It was a tiring day for the young mechanic, after all. And when he began dreaming about a tall beanstalk that grew faster than his namesakes would let him ascend, he was immediately awoken by the sound of doors creaking.
Tails sat up, wondering if Cosmo had only just come home. He did go to bed before seeing her, so that was a very possible event. However, the lack of lights in the hallways proved him wrong. He tried to go back to sleep, but the doors creaking, the cement crumbling, and the windows shaking, all proved to be incredible obstacles on his way to sleep. Tails groaned, pressing the blanket onto his ears, hoping that would be sufficient enough to stuff the noise out. Alas, it was not.
Eventually, the noise of the night stopped altogether, and then, and only then, was he finally able to go to sleep.
His dream consisted of walking through an endless jungle that had no trees, and only vines. Vines going as high as the eye could see. Green, thick, wet vines that made every step an impossible journey. The dream finally ended with his body getting completely overwhelmed and stuck inside the vines.
"Well, I can't hear anything, Tails," Sonic stated, purely as a matter of fact.
"Yeah, I can't hear it right now either, but it was bothering me so much last night! Do you think I should call an expert?" The next day, Tails had called Sonic over to see if he was hearing things or not. Cosmo had not returned that night, as she decided to stay over at Cream's place. He had gotten a voicemail from her since he went to sleep the moment the sun hit the edge of the horizon and missed the call she would have given him.
"Tails, you went to sleep early today, haven't you? I didn't realize it was so late, and I think I'm going to be staying with Cream for tonight, alright? Cya tomorrow, sweety!"
Sonic tapped his right foot on the floor, creating a dreadful creak every time he did so. "I think that wouldn't do much unless you're keen on tearing up the entire house. Unless...there might be something in your walls."
"Like a mouse?" Tails asked, thinking of a big, fat, rat. Tasty.
"Yeah, or maybe some kind of root is spreading underneath your house. Cosmo might have attracted some boy-plants to your house, buddy." Sonic snickered, nudging the fox.
Tails rolled his eyes and looked around, wondering if what he said really was true. In his mind, the hypothesis was worthy of an investigation. He spent the rest of that afternoon walking around the house, going in and out multiple times, checking every corner for a possible crack or leak that could have been caused by a plant's root pushing into the architecture. He looked into his garden first, despite the idea being ludicrous considering that all his plants were kept in pots. It was as good of a place to start as any, so what difference did it make? Besides, he could use that as an excuse while watering and tending to the plants.
Tails ended up spending the entire day doing that, and couldn't find much time to spend on his precious airplane. Thankfully, he didn't need that much time, as he got most of the heavy work done yesterday, and only needed to add the final touches to his glorious machine. Tails was glad he was an engineer with such talent.
"Tails, I think I'm just gonna spend a couple nights here over with Cream. Please don't try to blow up the house while I'm gone. I love you!"
Tails casually listened to the voicemail after walking out of the shower. While taking a shower, he thought of what could possibly be the cause of all the ruckus goin on while he was trying to sleep. He had to narrow it down to either something enormous growing within the walls of the house, or it was a rodent issue. The latter seemed more probable based on his current findings, so tomorrow would have to be dedicated to investigating that probability. He also noticed that the tattoo of the leaf had turned into a flower. Cute.
Cute tattoos were not enough to save Tails from having a terrible night, though. Tails, despite being able to fall asleep, had failed to get any sort of rest at all. In his sleep, he turned left. A horde of rats jumped off the cliff, running away from something. He turned right. Meat being carved off of a bone. He turned left. Blood, leaking from a bucket. He turned right. More meat being pounded and thrown on a grill. Left. Meat. Right. Meat. Left. Meat. Right. Meat. Meat. Meat. Meat.
Meat
Tails woke up with bags under his eyes. He was tired, he hadn't slept well, and he was hungry. It felt like the inside of his stomach was carving away at his own body trying to find something to eat. He went downstairs, but couldn't find anything to eat. He was so, so hungry.
"Sonic, can you come over with some food? I'm starving right now and I'm just too busy. Make sure it has meat in it."
"Tails?" Sonic brought with him three chilidogs, one for himself and two for his little brother. He seemed to be legitimately starving from the way he was calling him on the phone.
Sonic didn't hear a response, so he went to go check on the garden, as that's where he found the fox whenever he was trying to relax. He wasn't there, so he went to see if he collapsed in his bed from fatigue. He wasn't there either.
"Where on Mobius is...oh, the garage. Of course." Sonic rolled his eyes and slapped his forehead, realizing just how dumb he was back there. He made his way over to the workshop, but to his absolute surprise, he did not find the blonde fox he was looking for.
"Tails?" He shouted out, looking around, seeing the engine and propeller Tails finished working on. He took a moment to take a better look at it, placing a finger on the blade of the propeller. It seemed incredibly sharp, and it was definitely not something he wanted to be on the wrong side of.
Sonic heard the door to the garage open and saw Tails standing in the doorframe.
"Oh, Tails. You scared me for a second."
"Oh, home, sweet home! I wanna give you a kiss!" Cosmo walked in through the front door, making an exaggerated movement of her arms and legs to twirl around and make a scene. She waited for Tails to appear, like he always did, and greet her back into their home. But, that did not happen. Cosmo looked around, wondering where Tails went.
Since she did not hear a response, she went to check on the garden, as that's where she found him whenever the fox was trying to relax. He wasn't there, so she went to see if he collapsed in his bed from fatigue. He wasn't there either.
"Where on Mobius is...oh, the garage. Of course." Cosmo rolled her eyes and slapped her forehead, realizing just how dumb she was back there. She made her way over to the workshop, but to her absolute surprise, she did not find the blonde fox she was looking for.
Instead, she found a pile of fleshy yet grassy, meat bulbs, as if someone had grown jungle vines inside a lump of strange, almost unnatural looking meat. The outside 'flesh' part was a dark purple as if someone had caused a bruise all over the body. Inside was the aforementioned green vines continuing to sprout outwards, growing past the limits of the fleshy casing and creating strange spiral shapes. All around the fleshy thing, though, were red fur, probably soaked in all the blood pouring from the flesh. Right next to it, was Sonic's dead corpse. It was torn open through the back, showing the inside of its body through the spine and ribcage. As Cosmo watched, the thing flipped over Sonic's body, and the intestines, stomach, and liver all spilled out through the side. It kept picking off and biting on whatever piece of meat it could find, and when it had enough, it started moving downwards towards Sonic's legs. Sonic's head was a couple of feet away from the rest of the body, ripped apart by hand judging by how damaged everything was, the most noticeable being the orpheuses. The eyes were pushed in, the ear was torn apart by claws, his jaw was unhinged, and his nose was smashed to pieces. Next to the head, though, were the remainder of Tails' namesakes. They were empty husks covered in fur, and it was clear that they were cut off clean by something sharp and deadly.
The thing had finished its meal by now, and flung what remained of Sonic's body; the fur, the intestines, and the bone, next to where the head and tails were. It looked over to Cosmo and waved with its armlike limbs.
"Hello, Tails." Cosmo walked over, wrapping her arm around Tails and bringing him in for a hug and a kiss. The flower garden was looking to be a beautiful place for the two to grow up and share fond memories of.
