Chapter 4
-Golden Gate Bridge-
Another explosion suddenly rocked the bridge, making its supports groan loudly. The ropes that attached the road to the towers were slowly snapping one by one. On the road below, people were running like spooked mice. All of them were either screaming or crying in horror while some were staying, helping others that were either stuck in their cars or were trapped by the debris.
However, in the middle of the bridge, Saber was fighting against the Lancer Servant. Saber jumped back and sprinted to her left as she avoided balls of fire that scorched the road. Karna, the Lancer, spun his spear and created another scorching volley, all aimed at the King of Knights.
Saber slid down, decreasing the distance between her and the Lancer. She then launched her sword in an upward strike, but Karna simply parried. A blinding flash of black and red lit up the road as Saber moved her right hand and made an uppercut at Karna. The Lancer was pushed back and the back of a bus, destroying it in the process.
However, despite the attack, he was uninjured.
"I commend your attack, King of Knights, Artoria." Karna praised as he whipped his spear to the air.
"And I love your fire shows, Karna, son of the Sun God and one of the heroes of the Indian Epic Mahabharata." Saber mocked and made a rude half bow at the Indian Hero, who snorted.
"How rude, Artoria. I shall punish you." Karna answered with a sinister glare and pointed his staff at him. "On the battlefield, there can be no weakness." The spear began to radiate a red light. Sparks started flying out of the weapon and onto the ground. Saber squinted her eyes, puzzled by the Lancer's weapon as she felt a strong surge of magical energy building from within it.
What is that-?! Suddenly, she realized what was truly happening and what would happen. "Shit, he's launching his noble phantasm!" she cursed and leaped several cars away from him.
"My father, I ask for your forgiveness. For the first and last time, end everything, VASAVI SHAKTI!"
A wall of flames and a loud roar of wind filled Saber's ears as she jumped and landed behind a cab. The beam of flames scorched passed her, missing her by an inch, and soared towards the sky, hitting one of the support towers in the process. The bridge let out a groan and the road began to tilt to the right.
"Goddammit!"
"Holy Shish kebab!" Saber darted her eyes to her Master, Jim, who was hiding behind a sedan car, his blue eyes wide in panic and horror.
"Master, I told you to run away with the crowd!" Saber shouted as she recalled giving such a command to him after the battle had started.
However, Jim stood adamant. "No, I'm staying. I need to watch this through. Besides, I think you might need support." he said in a defiant manner, making Saber grin darkly.
"And how are you supposed to do that?" she asked in a deadpanned and angry manner.
Jim smiled as he took out his amulet and chanted. "FOR THE GOOD OF EVERYONE. DAYLIGHT AND EXCALIBUR IS MINE TO COMMAND!"
The amulet grew brighter in blue light and enveloped the boy before it disappeared. Jim was now adorned in his silvery Trollhunter's armor. The sight surprised Saber. She had detected that the boy's strength had increased by tenfold. It made her smile in amusement.
"Ho, interesting and I suppose that's your version of Excalibur." Saber showed her sword, the Excalibur, to him. Her sword's blade was black and menacing with red lights lining the surface and the edge. Jim's version was shiny and white. Its hilt was large and decorated by a single green gem.
"Indeed, it is. And I'm ready to help you." Jim said proudly while hiding his fears behind his smile.
Saber noticed it, but she took a peek from her hiding place. Karna had stopped unleashing his Noble Phantasm, but his spear was still radiating in orange hue. He was building his energy for another attack. "Do you know who he is, Master?"
"I know. He is Karna. One of the Indian Heroes from the Mahabharata Epic. He was the son of the Sun God, Surya...and he's a rival of Arjuna." Thanks, Strickler, for the history lesson. Jim remembered a fond memory of the time when Strickler gave him an assignment regarding the Indian epics. However, he brushed off the nostalgia and faced her again. "I know that he's a god and I'm not done with my tricks yet." The boy took out something and showed it to the King of Knights. It was a necklace with a green pendant. He wore it around his neck and began to chant.
"Temporare, Metamorphosis, In Loco Trolle!" The green pendant let out a red flash and Jim was enveloped by it. Saber's amusement grew to into surprise as she watched the boy's body morph and grow. Jim's skin had turned blue. His hair became messy and his ears became pointy. Horns grew out of his head and a pair of pointy fangs jutted out of his mouth. The Trollhunter had become a Troll.
"Interesting. A hide-morph magic." Saber chuckled in delight. "Let me guess, your version of Merlin is the creator of that charm?"
Jim looked down to the charm and smiled. "Actually, Merlin and his apprentice Hisirdoux were the creators. They created this just so I could assist Toby in defeating our foe."
The boy explained as Saber was filled with wonderment. However, the jovial reminiscing mood was cut after an explosion occurred from afar and the bridge groaned again as one of the metal ropes snapped. "Well, putting aside your showcases of magical enchantments, do you actually have a plan?" Saber asked as she took a peek again. Karna was still standing still but his sharp eyes were taking note of his surroundings, looking for them.
"Yes, Saber...but it will be risky." Jim explained with a low bothered voice, but his Servant smirked and glanced at him.
"You're the Trollhunter. Risk is in your job profession."
Where is she? Karna stood still on the burnt, melted road. His eyes looked around the ruined cars, looking for a tell-tale sign of the Saber Servant. He gripped his spear tightly, increasing the mana flow of magic. He could sense the King of Knight and a growing magic on her.
Suddenly, a loud thud echoed in front of him, making him look up. A large truck flew in midair and was heading towards him. The Lancer servant curved his spear up. The thin line of a laser swept passed in the air and cut the truck into two. And then a familiar sight greeted him.
"Karna!" Saber charged downward as the truck fell behind Karna. Lancer quickly spun his spear and parried the King of Knight's attack. The force pushed him to the ground, but the Indian Hero countered it by spinning his left foot and made a back kick at her. The King of Knights was pushed and hit the guardrail of the bridge. Saber coughed blood and darted her bloodshot eyes at the Lancer Servant. But she froze. Karna's spear was pointed at her and it was bathed in a familiar light of the Hero's Noble Phantasm.
"Let's end your rudeness here, King of Knights." Karna's eyes widened in anger as he shouted his Noble Phantasm to the air. "VASAVI-SHAKTI!"
The burst of fire roared out of his spear and hurled towards the King of Knights, but before it could hit, a blurry silvery figure suddenly appeared in the peripheral vision of the Indian Hero. "What-?"
"Vasavi this!" Jim appeared and leaped from behind a car in his Troll hybrid form. He slammed his Excalibur on the ground. The flames hit the target, but an aura of blue light had completely surrounded him and his Servant. The force field had split the Noble Phantasm into two, like a rock jutting out of a running river.
"IT'S SO HOT!" The Trollhunter shouted in pure fear and sheer will. The fire was pushing him and the forceful hot wind hit his armor hard. A loud buckling sound echoed from Jim's armor as a part of it detached. The boy howled in fury, pouring his mana into his sword's barrier.
Karna was very surprised. "How-?" His mouth was half opened, but then he noticed a movement above him.
He looked up and made a soft gasp. Saber was in the air, her dark Excalibur glowing in blood red. That was all a distraction. Karna finally realized what had happened. The boy was her Master and he had caught him in a vulnerable position. A soft smile of amazement spread on his thin lips.
"Cry. It's time you come crashing down." Saber chanted as a carnal smile spread on her lips. Her sword burst into a dark red and violet light. "Vortigern, Hammer of the Vile King, reversed the rising sun. Swallow the light," She swung her sword up and with all of her strength, she howled her Noble Phantasm. "EXCALIBUR MORGAN!"
A gust of wind thrust out of her sword. The blinding red sparks shot and hit the Lancer Servant's red jewel. The red jewel broke and pierced through his chest. The light travelled out of his body and then hit the bridge's support tower. The whole bridge rocked from side to side as a gust of wind blew out a portion of the famous landmark bridge.
Karna's Noble Phantasm eventually died down together with Saber's. The Servant landed on the road beside Jim, who was breathing hard and was shaking uncontrollably. The boy had just endured a divine attack and he couldn't believe that he was still alive.
"Did we get him?" He spat each word between his mouthful of breath as Saber looked in front. The smoke cleared and revealed the sight of the Lancer Servant. Karna was still standing, but his face showed a resigned look. His armor was torn and gone. His chest bore a large hole, a sign of Saber's attack. He shifted his eyes at them and a calm smile appeared on his lips.
"Saber, despite your rudeness, you fought well. You have a good master. Good for you." Glitter of golden lights started to float around him as he slowly crumbled, a sign that he was truly defeated. Jim couldn't help but feel sadness. This man wasn't just a hero, but a human to him. Being defeated must have been very disappointing, but he was accepting it openly.
"Um...Mr. Karna, I'm sorry. You fought well too." Jim couldn't help but throw in some words of encouragement.
The Indian hero glanced at him, smiled at his kind words, and said, "I hope your wish comes true. Good luck, young man."
Karna's human form disappeared and turned into a golden ball of light. The will-o-wisp like light then shot out and disappeared into the night sky.
Silence enveloped at the two as the wind howled through their ears, noisily. I did it...Saber and I won. Jim was still in a daze from his victory. He couldn't believe that he had survived the first round. Suddenly, he felt a vibration on his armor's right pocket. The pocket watch was glowing orange when he took it out. He opened and saw words forming on the surface.
First Round:
Saber Vs. Lancer
Final Result:
Saber wins
Master/Servant Status:
Saber & Master: Alive
Archer & Master: Unknown
Lancer & Master: Defeated and Disqualified
Caster & Master: Alive
Rider & Master: Alive
Berserker & Master: Alive
Assassin & Master: Alive
"We won, Master." Saber broke the silence and a gladdened smile showed on her face. Jim didn't reply at first because he still felt bad about what happened to the Lancer Servant. "I hope Lancer will be alright." he said in a low voice. Saber chuckled at his reaction because it was too cute for her.
"He would be alright, Master. He was now back at the Throne of Heroes, home of all Heroic Spirits." she explained and Jim's heart lightened a bit. If he had a place to go back to, maybe Karna would be fine, after all. He could relax and heal himself there.
"Oh, holy fuzzbuckets. I...we...we won!" The realization hit Jim too late as he laughed in pure happiness. Saber only stood still with a jovial smirk on her face as she watched her Master jump with pure joy.
*SNAP!*
A loud snap cut through the happy atmosphere and the road suddenly gave in and tilted to the left. Jim shouted and slid down with the remaining vehicles. The Support Towers that held up the bridge had finally given in and bent in their own weight. The Trollhunter hit the guardrail and hung on, but a car suddenly pushed him and he eventually let go.
Jim screamed as he fell, but he felt a hand wrap around his waist. "I got you, Master!" Saber said with an excited voice as she fell with him.
"Saber, we're gonna hit the water-!" the Trollhunter shouted in panic, but before he could react further, the King of Knight softly landed on the surface of the water as if it was a solid ground.
"How-?"
"I have blessings from the Lady of the Lake. They give me the ability to walk on the water as if it were ground." Jim glanced at her and saw her face was inches closer to his. Just like from afar or normal distance, the girl's face was majestic and beautiful. It made his heart thump.
"Oh."
"Master. Looks like I owe you an apology. I thought you were a green soldier, but it turns out you have tremendous experience in fighting. I apologize to you for my rudeness." Saber said with her head making a half bow. But her tremendous beauty put Jim in a distracted state. He only nodded as he shifted his face away, hiding his reddening face.
"Th-Thanks Saber. I completely forgive you for that." he said as Saber smiled and looked up.
"Then, Master, what should I do with the news chopper above us?"
Eh? Jim slowly realized that his ears were filled with a roaring sound coming from above them. He looked up and squinted his blue eyes as he saw an outline of a news-helicopter. Its light was pointed at them.
"Oh no. The world isn't ready for trolls yet!" he shouted and it was enough for Saber to know what would be his command to her.
"Say no more, Master." she said as Jim looked at her in a puzzled manner.
"What do you mean by-?! AAHHHH!" Jim let out a scream as Saber sprinted across the water at a tremendous speed while she carried him in her arms like a baby. The two shot across the surface and eventually disappeared into the night, leaving the broken bridge, the place for the first round of the Holy Grail.
-Lands End Park-
Unbeknownst to the two victors, they were being watched by the Invincible Hero, who was sitting on a bench in a casual manner. Mark, still in his hero costume, was sitting with his chin on his knuckles. He had witnessed the first battle. It astounded him and put him in total silence.
"That...was fucking awesome." Mark uttered under his breath with a tense tone in his voice. The servants involved were Saber and Lancer and they both unleashed their ultimate power against each other, causing destruction in their wake. However, it didn't deter his will to fight on.
"Did you watch it all, Heracles?" He turned his head to his right and saw his Servant materialize. Heracles, the Berserker-class Servant, looked down at him and only nodded. Mark asked with a plain tone, hiding his uncertain feeling. "Can you...defeat that? Saber, I mean?"
The Berserker looked at the bridge for a moment before he returned his gaze at his Master. He made a single nod. I do hope so. Mark couldn't help but create a half-bothered smirk. Even though he knew that his Servant wasn't lying, he couldn't help but feel threatened by the Saber-Servant and that armored boy who turned into a half troll. Of course, I'll defeat them. It's all for my wish.
"Then Berserker, I will tell you this once again. We must win this. I need that Grail, so please..." Mark whipped his right index finger and poked the Berserker's thick-skinned chest, before he added. "You got that?"
Berserker nodded immediately. "Good." Mark said. As Berserker disappeared into a golden mist, Mark turned around and started walking.
'Of course, son, we will win this war.'
The Invincible turned around in a dash, eyes wide in horror. A voice had whispered to him and it was so familiar that he immediately recognized it. "No...please, not again." He heaved for air as he took a step back. You're not here, you're not real. I buried you...I damn buried you. He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself.
An image began to play in his mind and it slowly reduced the speed of his beating heart. "Yeah, he's no longer here. He's buried and silently rotting away." I made sure. I made sure. He said in a rattled tone. While his mind screamed in terror, Mark turned around and flew away.
The park was silent after his departure, but then a shadow slowly emerged from one of the trees near the place where the Invincible flew. The shadow walked into the street lamp and revealed its true form to the world.
Illyasviel Von Einzbern II looked up with a dark smirk on her face. The child was wearing an all-black coat and boots while her red eyes stared at the night sky, watching the reduced image of the famed superhero.
"Interesting, Mark Grayson. You're interesting." she said. Illyasviel blinked after she caught a light in her vision. The light was that of the Lancer Servant and she grinned as it descended and floated in front of her. "You're home, Lancer. Now be part of the Grail."
The light hovered to her chest and entered her. She gasped in pleasure as she felt the power of Lancer Servant spread all over her body. "Interesting." The girl returned to her normal state as she closed her eyes and hung her head.
"This Grail War...is the most interesting one."
-Fort Baker Park-
A couple of miles away, in Fort Baker Park, a girl stood dangerously on the edge of the viewing platform. She had seen the first round of the Holy Grail war and she couldn't hide the half-amazed smirk on her face.
The girl was tall and was wearing casual clothes, high stockings and black shoes. A dark-red mini-skirt was wrapped around her waist. Her upper clothes were composed of a red coat over her white shirt, a red scarf tailing her neck. Her eyes were red and blinking with curiosity as she fixed her twin pigtails that were tied by a pair of red ribbons.
"Hmm. Well, that's it. That was a bit...flashy and amazing." she said in a whimsical voice as she turned around. "What do you think, Shirou?"
Her red eyes looked back to the bench where a man was sitting. The man was taller than her and he wore a black metal boots and distressed pants. His shirt was sleeveless showing his well toned, dark skin, muscular biceps. His hair was white as snow and his eyes were grey and looked back at her. "It's not amazing. In fact, it is disturbing." He stood up and walked towards the edge and looked at the ruined bridge. "I told you before. The Greater Grail is destroyed in Fuyuki City. There shouldn't be a Holy Grail war."
"So then...What the hell is this Sixth Holy Grail war then?" she asked in interest as the man only shook his head.
"That would be my job. The Magus Association had hired me to investigate this war." Shirou took out the pocket watch and opened it. The surface had changed and formed into words.
Second Round:
00:03:24:60:60
Location: Venice, Italy
"Venice, Italy?"
"Oh, the land of the Pasta." The girl smirked and giggled in excitement. "I do hope your Italian is good, Shirou, because I won't translate for you." she said in proud way as Shirou closed the pocket watch and sigh.
"Then I won't treat you to pasta and jewels. I heard that Italians are very good when it comes to making food...and exquisite jewelry."
"Wa-Wait, I was joking!" the girl retorted and the man laughed girl's face reddened in embarrassment and Shirou saw it, a satisfying grin spread on his lips.
"I know, Goddess Ishtar." The girl, now named Ishtar, blew her cheeks and made raspberry sounds at the man. The man then looked back at the ruined bridge and a troubled look formed on her face.
That can't be Saber. My Saber was all pure and noble. The Greater Grail is gone and was destroyed by Rin. And Illya…He paused as the face of a girl with white hair and red eyes, smiling at him, flashed before his mind. A sorrowful feeling enveloped his heart. "This isn't a normal Holy Grail war."
"What?"
"Nothing. Let's go, Goddess Ishtar." The Sumerian goddess started walking beside him as he moved. She was skipping steps and playfully humming a Sumerian tune. Shirou, however, bore a frown as his mind pondered more.
I must stop this war. No more of this Holy Grail. Shirou flashed his grey eyes in front and showed a determined look. They will hurt many people, those Masters. I must stop them, even if it means killing them. He thought as he and his Servant walked towards the darkness of the night.
The first round was finished. The second round would soon begin.
