Chapter 22
-Unknown City-
Where am I? Jim thought as the light disappeared and he found himself looking at new surroundings. The Trollhunter and the group were standing on the rooftop of a building. "This place...it's a city?" Jim said in puzzlement as he took a step forward.
Mark, on the other hand, took note of the whole surrounding before a look of recognition showed in his eyes. "Is this...Central city?"
"Indeed. Your turf, to be exact." Nolan said simply as he looked to his towards a skyscraper.
Mark walked slowly to the edge to get a clear view of the city. However, his look of recognition suddenly shifted into a startled one. He was now looking at the whole city, or what was left of it. The buildings that greeted his eyes were all in ruins. Their skeletal frames were jutting out and broken pillars of cement were all cracked and destroyed. The skyscrapers from afar were all in similar state. Their metallic frames casted large shadows coming from the setting sun on the horizon, creating a grim atmosphere. The air echoed ghostly around them. An ominous feeling made the group feel uneasy.
"What the hell happened here!?" Mark asked, aghast at the state of the city that he always protected before.
The Homunculus girl glanced at him, an impish grin on her lips. "Mark, your wish is for the eradication of all life form's ability to do evil, am I right?"
"Yes, but that doesn't mean the city would become ruins. What the hell happened here?!" he asked again, his voice rising into an angered one as the girl giggled. Illya 2 clapped her hands once before her red eyes shifted down to the ground.
"I'm showing you the aftermath of your wish, Mark. This is the day when all lifeforms' ability to do evil was removed." she said and pointed down.
The Invincible Hero looked at whatever she was pointing at. A river. Is the street flooded? Mark saw the road below, but he could also see the rippling surface of a river. But then he noticed that the water's surface was red and there was also something protruding on the surface. Wait...that looks like a- "What-?!" The hero's eyes widened in shock. The surface of the flooded street was filled with spears and impaled people.
Mark gasped. Terror showed on his face. Everywhere he looked, he only saw nothing but people whose chests were pierced by the spears. Their blood flowed down along the shaft and onto the road, filling it ankle deep. The Invincible Hero could see that some of them were still twitching, as if they were impaled just recently. Ithers only hung still with their lifeless eyes still open and looking straight up the orange hue sky.
"What the hell!" And why does this look so familiar? Invincible rummage his brain, the scene was so horrifying and yet he recognized it. He had seen the bloody image before. And then it clicked onto him. He remembered his dream.
"All living beings are funny, especially humans, no?" Illya 2 said while displaying an uncaring smirk. She stood at the edge dangerously, and twirled gracefully before she casted her red ruby eyes at Invincible. The Hero glanced at her with a dreaded scowl. "They always want to dwell in rationalism, always clinging to logic which, as they say, guides them to their everyday lives." The girl shifted her eyes at Nolan. The older Viltrumite only hardened his gaze at her. "However, all humans tend to forget one crucial thing about their true selves. Humans...no, all lifeforms are basically mindless beasts." Jim's eyes widened in shock. The girl spoke so freely that is was as if she was stating a fact.
"What do you mean by that, Illya 2?" Emiya asked as the girl landed her eyes at him. Her smirk darkened more as she raised her hand and made a single clap.
The whole group was enveloped in white light as the Grail moved them into another place.
-Savannah in Africa-
The group found themselves standing in the middle of an African savannah. The whole place was deserted, except for brown colored grass that swayed and rustled loudly as the warm wind brushed past them.
"Africa…?" The Hero showed a lost look. The sudden change of scenery confused him. Suddenly, he heard a loud rustle behind him. He looked behind him just in time to see a small, brown colored deer leap out of a bush. The deer scampered and took off before the bush parted again. This time, a leopard came out. It was hungry. Its mouth was salivating. The poor prey continued sprinting, but the animal quickly gained on it. Just as the leopard leapt and chomped the living daylight of its prey, the ground cracked and a spear burst out.
The animal let out a short yelp and the sight made the Hero draw his breath sharply in apprehension.
"Oh, so the Grail really did interpret Mark's wish word for word, huh?" Nolan, on the other hand, wasn't impressed. He was clearly expecting the animal to die.
The Homunculus girl giggled at his words. "Well, your son said 'all lifeforms,' so that animal isn't an exception."
No, that's not what I truly meant! Mark darted to her. He wanted to deny what she said. However, he couldn't say anything because what Einzbern said was clearly correct. His wish was to eradicate all lifeforms' ability to do evil. However, he wasn't expecting that the Grail would make his wish take effect on every living being, even down to the lower predatory animals whose main existence was to hunt and kill for a living, in such a violent way.
The Hero gnashed his teeth. Mark was beginning to see the error of his wish and the girl noticed his anguished state. The Homunculus girl only looked down at the Hero with a degrading smile.
"All lifeforms end up giving into evil, even momentarily, at some point. It is because everyone is acting according to their basic instinct to dominate and survive. Hate, viciousness, greed – there are so many emotional factors that no one is able to let go of no matter how rational they try to be. Everyone's too stupid to be logical, and so evil remains inside them, silently waiting for the right moment wake up." She walked to the impaled leopard and stood beside the spear. The animal's blood was pooling on her feet and her sinister face was reflecting back on the surface.
The girl spun elegantly again and faced the group as she opened her arms wide. "Hatred has to be the worst of the lot. That emotion makes people prioritize acting based on anger, prejudice and rage, ignoring better actions that could be taken. This just creates more conflict and chaos."
The girl then stopped and clapped her hands again. The whole place suddenly opened up. The ground became milky white and sandy. The sky become inky black and glittered with hundreds of and hundreds of twinkling stars.
"Wait...are we on a moon?" Jim asked in a surprised manner. He could see several planets, all in different shades of color, lined up above them.
"Indeed, Trollhunter. We're on a moon of a random advanced planet." Illya 2 explained as she pointed again at something. The group followed her gaze and saw a planet. The planet was large and it loomed over them. It looked advanced. The surface was filled with lights and small futuristic satellites flew above it.
And then a shadow suddenly swooped above them. Mark glanced up and was startled to see a large spear. Its shaft was long and its tip was twice as large as the planet. Why is there a spear here- "No...No!" The Hero was confused as to why there was a planet size spear and then he quickly realized why. However, before he could react, the spear thrust itself at the surface. A loud crack reverberated from the planet before it groaned and split in two. Invincible's eyes become grief stricken as the planet crumbled in front of him.
"Hm…so it can also end planets, huh?" Nolan said as his frown deepened into an unease. He didn't like what he had just witnessed.
His son, on the other hand, was completely disheveled. I did that with my wish? I ended a civilization! He wasn't expecting his wish to cause an extinction of whatever species were living on the annihilated planet. He knew that some, and a lot of them, could be children who knew nothing, or unaware, of evil.
Illya 2 grinned and chuckled menacingly at the Invincible Hero. She was enjoying his despair. "What's the matter, Mark? You said you wanted to eliminate all lifeforms' ability to do evil in every timeline and universe. This shouldn't make you sad."
Invincible shot up to her, a despairful scowl on his face as tears flowed out of his eyes. "The-there could be children in there who are still unaware, and didn't mean to do evil!"
"Yes, and even so, they aren't the exception to your wish, are they? Everything possesses the possibility of doing something wrong, of hurting others, of evil." Nolan said as if he was stating a fact to his already broken and downcast son. Mark glanced at his father, a pained expression on his face, but it had no effect on the Viltrumite. "I told you before to think about your wish carefully, didn't I?"
You only get stupid prizes from playing stupid games, Son. The Viltrumite mentally clicked his tongue, dismayed at his son's expression, before he looked away, hiding his saddened and disappointed face.
How funny. Illya 2 watched the two with a mocking smile. To her, the father and son looked like clowns playing in a sad circus, one that she could never get tired of watching. "You see, Mark." she began as she playfully dragged her foot along the grey sand. "Even if all civilizations advance, and no matter what complex social structures they all pledge to live by, all lifeforms make the wrong choices."
She paused as she faced everyone and tilted her head. "And the reason for that is because all lifeforms, in every universe, will always move based on emotions. A perfect example of this would be...the Viltrumites." Nolan's face darkened more, fury lighting up his eyes, but he didn't look at her. "The Viltrumites were said to be advanced creatures," Illya 2 said while she stared at the treacherous Viltrumite with scrutiny. "And yet their Emperor was filled with abhorrence and prejudice. Because of that hatred, he created a vast army and tried to conquer Earth...and that leads to his stupid demise." The Homunculus girl then shifted her deadly crimson gaze at the Trollhunter and smirked. "Gunmar, too, was filled with hatred. The humans ostracized the trolls, his kind, and he hated them for it. He waged war against them...and same thing with the Viltrumite Emperor, slain pathetically by you. All lifeforms are just tormenting themselves in an idiotic cycle of evil. Best to kill that bud before it even blooms further, then there's no suffering."
Jim scowled in anger, his gazed sharpening. It was true that Gunmar hated the humans. His kind was ridiculed by them. He had indeed created an army too, the Gumm-Gumms, just so he could kill humans. The never-ending cycle of hatred, both the former Emperor of Viltrumites and Gunmar, had it and both acted in irrational ways. The words of the girl rang true and it sickened him. Even in different species, hatred was the same. It was a sickening feeling that drove an individual to madness and despair. It may bring satisfaction at first, but it would be short and momentary. It would eventually leave one empty and lifeless.
"I-I didn't wish for this-!" Mark began with a shaking voice, his face showing a lamenting frown. The scenes that played in front of him were too brutal and heartless. The man didn't want anyone to get hurt because of his wish, and yet the Grail was showing him the future where his wish had taken effect in the worst way imaginable. His reactions, however, weren't getting through to the Einzbern Homunculus. The girl slowly shifted at him, her eyes suddenly narrowing and becoming cold.
"What? This is your wish, Mark."
Invincible landed his black eyes at her, showing nothing but strong regretful enmity. "You tricked me! You told me the Grail is omnipotent!"
The girl clicked her tongue, and her frown turned into a dark, dismayed one. "No, I didn't trick you, Mark. The Grail is omnipotent...It's just that you didn't ask me how the Grail really works." She shrugged her shoulders before she explained furthermore. "The Grail can grant any wish, but its working methodologies completely relies on the Master's words. It interprets it, word for word, before it manifests and applies the wish to reality." She glanced at him again and made a sheepish smile. "I don't see anything wrong with your wish though. It's perfect for me."
Mark let out a strained, disbelieving gasp. Illya 2 had completely changed. She showed nothing but complete innocence to him before, but now she was unremorseful and cold. The girl was clearly uncaring to others. He clenches both of his fists in fury. The girl clearly tricked and used him to fulfill her selfish purpose.
"I only wanted what was best for the Viltrumites and for the humans, for everyone! I wanted everyone to live in peace!" So why is there blood being shed!? The Invincible Hero roared in despair. Nolan glanced at Mark, showing his dismal frown to his son. Illya 2, meanwhile, stared at him with a deadpan look. It was as if she was mesmerized by the Hero's stupidity. She then made a cruel smile.
"Mark, since you said it, I'll explain it to you. Didn't I tell you that all lifeforms are irrational?" she said in a reminding way as she put her hands over her black coat. "Your wish is for every lifeform's ability to do evil to disappear. The Grail grants it by restricting everyone's sentience."
"Sentience?" A lost look formed in Mark's face.
The girl giggled and explained more. "All lifeforms are inherently chaotic. They will always destroy before they create something. Their actions are that of a beast, always giving into emotions first, and they glorify it through their pretentious social concepts and made-up reasonings."
The girl walked closer to Invincible and was about to poke the man's abdomen when a tall shadow suddenly blocked her path. Nolan moved swiftly and stood between her and his son, a rageful scowl on his lips. He casted a mad glare at the Homunculus.
"Do not touch my son, you little demonic bitch." he said in a low voice and with a warning growl.
Illya 2 looked up to him with awe before she cast a wide and devilish grin. "Mark, your wish will be the catalyst that restricts all lifeforms' sentience. They will no longer have the ability to react to their emotions. They will now react based on pure realistic logic. Acting on pure emotion and letting go of logical thinking is considered 'evil,' and that means their existence must be eradicated. The Grail has zeroed in on that fact and finds that the removal of emotion is a common factor in order to stop everyone from committing evil actions in all universes...and that also includes thoughts too."
The girl clasped her hand to her chest and beamed a beautiful smile. "The people, the animals, and the planets that you saw earlier – the reason why they are being killed is because they are rebelling against your wish...It is only a fitting punishment, isn't it?"
No...no, it wasn't! Invincible wanted to shout, to say that she was wrong, but her words rang true in some part of his mind. The irrational actions of all lifeforms due to having sentience was the cause of chaos and disorder throughout the universe. And because of emotions, all lifeforms tended to make illogical decisions that end up hurting others or endangering entire species. He gnashed his teeth as he hung his head low in shame and regret. He didn't like his wish at all and he lamented silently for making it.
"You're wrong!" The group turned to Trollhunter, who was displaying a heated grimace. He had watched all of the scenarios and he didn't like it one bit. He had enough with the girl. Illya 2 noticed his reaction but it only widened his evil grin more.
"Oh? On what part?"
"Everything. What is your evidence to your preposterous claim that all lifeforms are chaotic and are no different from mindless beasts!?" the boy asked vehemently at the girl. The girl's words described what all lifeforms are, but he found something lacking in her argument. The girl blinked at him as if the Trollhunter had just asked an idiotic question.
"That so rich coming from a boy that can transform into a troll." she said simply, but then it was followed by an irritated sigh. No choice then. "Knowledge of History, dear Young Atlas. Why do you think there are still imperfections in this universe despite having many advanced civilizations governing it? Face it, Trollhunter, as long as all lifeforms have emotions, they will never find peace." Illya 2 paused and crossed her arms again over her black coat. "The only way for them to live in pure peace and order is for their sentience to be restricted, to be dictated everyday on what to do with their lives. That's how you get rid of the ability to do evil!" she said with a proud smile as Invincible frowned at her more. The girl blinked as she watched the Trollhunter suddenly started looking at her with a confident smile on his face. What's this? She blinked in confusion as the boy took a step forward.
"Is that all? That's a pretty weak basis, isn't it?" Everyone turned to Jim, startled by his response. The boy continued. "You're wrong, Illya 2, on so many levels. Let me use your own evidence, the Knowledge of History." the Trollhunter said as he took another step forward. The Homunculus frowned and took a step away from him. "It is true that lifeforms can be inherently chaotic, but they are more than that. They are also inherently peaceful. They always improve themselves once they encounter failure and they never stop getting better just so they don't repeat the same mistakes again."
What are you playing at? Illya 2's frown slowly shifted into a scowl as the boy took a step forward again and she stepped back. "I do not believe all lifeforms are evil. As long as they can think and feel, they'll always be capable of love and compassion. They can change and be better than their previous selves. That possibility for change is what counters the possibility to do wrong." Jim stopped and looked at Mark. A kind smile showed was Jim's face before he said. "Despite what he had done to me, I still forgive Mark. He only wants what's best for the world. I am giving him a chance to change for the better because I believe that he was a kind person...I have strong faith that all lifeforms have the possibility to be good."
"Jim...after all I've done." Mark whispered to Jim. He felt ashamed that the boy still wanted to forgive him despite all of the things that he had done to him. Love and compassion...why does this scene feel so familiar? Mark thought hard. The words of the Trollhunter and the way he made the speech – it all felt so familiar to him. It was as if he had done the same thing to someone before.
"How stupid…" The uplifting mood was cut by an enraged voice. Illya 2 casted a dark frown at Jim and the group. If looks could kill, then hers would have murdered everyone already. But then, the Homunculus shifted her frown into a delightful grin and tilted her head to her right.
"Nice explanation...Let's test it, shall we?" You think I would forget your wish?
Jim stared at her with alertness. He knew that the enemy was planning something against him and he prepared himself for it.
The girl clapped her hands loudly and the whole scenery changed again.
"Where are we?"
The place materialized and the group found themselves standing inside a hospital room. The Hero looked around and noticed the hospital bed on the other side of the room. A white blanket was laid over the person sleeping on it. "A hospital." Invincible was puzzled as to why they ended up inside a dark hospital room.
The Hero glanced at Jim, but he stopped. Jim's face was frozen in shock. His blue eyes were wide and showing recognition. Jim knew the room and who currently in it. "No…" he whispered in a terrified voice. Illya 2 noticed it, her grin turning into a smug smile.
*PAT* *PAT* *PAT*
And then soft footsteps echoed. The group looked towards the corner of the room and saw a figure emerging from the dark corner. The new figure was that of a small boy with auburn hair. He was smaller than Jim. He was clothed in a white hospital gown. His green eyes blinked to life as he recognized the Trollhunter. "Jim, you're back!"
"Toby."
Toby, so that's Jim's best friend! Mark glanced at Jim and then back to the other boy whose name was Toby. He finally saw the face of the Trollhunter's best friend, the one who was in a coma and the one Him was fighting for in this war. The Hero's lips curled down in sadness as the Trollhunter slowly walked and approached the friend.
"Toby...you're awake."
"Of course. I'm awake. You won the war and you wished on the Grail."
Illya 2 grinned more, her face becoming that of a devil as she watched the boy fall into the projection of the Grail. She didn't, however, notice the Viltrumite Servant, who was staring daggers at her. Motherfucker...Nolan cursed as he clenched his fists. The girl was enjoying this and he didn't like what she was doing.
"I wished on the Grail?" A questioning look formed on Jim's face as Toby's smile brightened more.
"Thanks to that, I'm all well...but someone needs to take my place, you know." Toby said cheerfully, but his words made Jim's smile disappear, replaced by a foreboding frown. Jim took a step back and glanced at the hospital bed. He gulped down as he stared at the figure underneath the white blanket.
No...If Jim wished for Toby to wake up, then someone had taken his place. He remembered Rin's warning. The grail would simply transfer the curse to someone close to him. The boy put his hand on the blanket. He gulped down again tensely as his hand shook. Then, with a grunt, Jim pulled the blanket off.
The one who was lying in the bed was Claire.
Jim's eyes widened again in sorrow as he recognized his lover. "Claire...my love." he whispered in horror. Emiya clicked his tongue in heartbreak. The Terrorist Mage knew that the boy was just seeing an illusion of the Grail, but he couldn't help but feel bad.
"What's the matter, Jim?" Toby asked with an oblivious voice.
"Claire...She'd taken your place." Jim glanced at Toby and noticed that his best friend's smile widened more. "Of course, the Grail had just transferred Belroc's curse to someone else."
"If you don't like it, we can make the Grail choose Douxie...or your Mother or your Stepfather, Strickler. You've an endless list of friends that could take my curse and sleep forever." Toby explained with a kindness in his voice.
Jim wasn't having it. The Toby in front of him was just an illusion created by the Grail. He couldn't help but feel happy and glad to see his best friend talking to him again. But Jim also wished that Toby wouldn't talk to him anymore. "Why, Toby? Why does someone need to receive Belroc's curse?"
"It's because I was fated to be cursed that day. In fact, I was fated to die." Toby answered and tilted his head. His smile beamed more at the Trollhunter. "Because of the Holy Grail, that fate was averted. However, the fate of someone dying within our group is unavoidable. Someone needs to die instead of me, so the Holy Grail randomly selected from your circle of relationships." Toby glanced down at Claire, one of his friends, before he added without a care to the world. "Claire is just another candidate, but I did hope the Grail wouldn't select her. You two are perfect for each other."
Toby...Jim understood his explanation. The Trollhunter always wondered why Toby was cursed into a coma. Despite all of the warnings and precautions that Jim had made to keep him safe from harm, Toby still received the deadly blow. Now he understood why. Toby was meant to die and no miracles could ever change it. Jim lowered his head and took a step closer.
"Jim?" Toby blinked, puzzled by Jim's actions. The Trollhunter moved closer to Toby again and showed his face, a kind smile drawn on his lips.
"Jim-? ACK!" A sharp yelp came out of Toby's mouth. Everyone gasped in shock.
"What the hell-?!" Mark looked at Jim and then noticed something. The Trollhunter's Excalibur had materialized in its owner's hand and its tips were buried into Toby's abdomen. The smaller boy's hospital gown was slowly turning red. He stabbed him! The Hero took a step back in awe. Illya 2 noticed the sword on Jim's hand. A confused and angry scowl showed on her face.
"What the hell!? You stabbed your friend? Why-?!" she asked vehemently as illusion-Toby went limp and fell to the floor with a loud thud.
Jim then faced Illya 2. "You actually think that I will fall for that. I know my Toby. He wouldn't let anyone die for him, and I will respect his feelings." the Trollhunter said before he declared further. "The Grail will no longer trick any of us, Illya 2. You're the loser this round!"
Illya 2 growled at him. She didn't expect the Trollhunter to stab his friend. She expected him to cry and take back his words from earlier. Her plan backfired and she was absolutely pissed. "James Lake Jr.! I swear on the Root that your own words will bite you back someday!" she roared in fury, but the boy didn't react. Jim maintained cool, which infuriated Illya 2 more.
Just what was more precious than having your own wish fulfilled, Illya 2 didn't know anymore. She stopped her violent fuming and calmly breathed the air. Her lips curled into a resigning frown as she raised her hands and made a single clap.
The place disappeared and the whole group returned to the hill.
The afternoon sun reflected in the girl's hair, which flew softly as the warm wind blew past her. A very disappointed scowl was on Illya 2's face before she opened her ruby eyes and looked at Jim and Mark. They had finished viewing each of the participants' wishes and she knew that the two wouldn't want to use the Grail anymore.
"Let me guess...none of the two of you will use the Grail?"
Jim stood with a serious face. He looked up to her and shook his head. "Like I said, no one needs it anymore."
Mark glanced up to her, a pained expression showing on his face, but then the Hero shook his head too. "I would never be happy with my wish…" he said with a depressed voice, making Nolan glanced at him. Omni-Man casted a gloom at his son, feeling his sadness.
Oh well. "I guess all I can say is thank you for playing." Illya 2 said before she twirled again and opened both of her arms wide. "Well then, time to fulfill my true purpose. I'll tap into one of the branches of the Root, gain an infinite amount of Mana...and become the strongest Mage ever." Jim and Mark focused their eyes on the girl and saw her face draw into a sly and devilish grin.
"That was your goal from the very beginning, isn't it? Your why dunnit-part?" Emiya said as the girl let out a maniacal laugh before she cast a wild look at the man.
"Why yes, Onii-chan. I couldn't care less about the wishes of these two. All I wanted was to activate the Third Magic, make myself materialize in the world, and become a powerful Mage. Imagine the things that I could do in the real world."
"I can imagine...It's gonna be ugly." Nolan said as he shifted into a fighting stance, ready to kill Illya 2. The girl glanced at him and ignored his words before she focused her eyes again on the black void and the swirling band of blue light around it.
"Here I go!" she yelled energetically as the band of light pulsated. A trail of blue glittering lights formed out of the light and started to form a single line towards the girl.
Jim and Invincible glanced at each other. Having realized that their wishes were bad, the two immediately formed a silent pact and a plan. "You take her left, I take her right." The Trollhunter said and the Hero nodded. The two were now ready to stop the girl. They would do absolutely anything to stop her from receiving the power of the Root.
"STOP!" However, before anyone could move, a loud voice echoed through the hill. The group stopped their attacks. The trail of blue mana disappeared as the ritual was interrupted.
"Who interrupted me?!" Illya 2 roared as she turned around. There was another person standing a meter away from the Homunculus. The new person was a girl dressed in a very beautiful white gown. Her hair was silver white, just like Illya 2, and her eyes were red, just like the Homunculus. The girl looked exactly like the other girl and the group were startled by her appearance.
"There's two of them now?!" Mark exclaimed in surprise. Jim was stunned by the girl's face. There was no mistake. The two girls looked exactly alike.
"Illya…" Emiya took a step forward, a strong look of recognition on his face. Despite the two looking exactly alike, the Terrorist Mage knew who the new girl was. "Illya...my little sister." A sad yet happy smile was on his lips as the Illya in white clothes looked at him and cast a gentle smile.
"Shirou-nii-chan, hello." Illya said with gladness upon meeting her adoptive big brother one more time.
"Heh, so what are you doing here, my previous version of mine?" The happy reunion was then cut as Illya 2 stepped in between her and Emiya. What the hell is she doing here? A dark grimace was displaying on Illya 2's face. Beneath her façade, she was completely shocked and afraid. She wasn't expecting Illya 1's sudden appearance. Illya 2 cursed her luck.
The Illya 1 shifted her red eyes at Illya 2, a serious look on her face as she declared unto her. "I came here to stop you, my forgotten other self."
The wind blew hard along the hills, creating an ominous atmosphere as the two Homunculus faced each other and the Greater Grail loomed above them with the Root, looking down upon them.
