A/N: Hey everyone. Yes, I took a long hiatus. But I am back. I hope to be uploading more frequently (I hope). I changed the direction of this story - hope you enjoy!
Naruto sighted as she stared off into space, again. To say that she was bored was putting it lightly. It was another typical day in the office where all she did was oversee the new project, building accessible and affordable homes for the homeless. It was a project she was pretty passionate about. Despite her young age of twenty, she convinced her father that she was mature enough to oversee everything. One would think that when their child finishes their masters by the age of twenty, their parents would see them as an adult woman. But, alas, being the first-born daughter to Minato and Kushina Namikaze, she was babied. A lot.
Knock, knock.
Naruto looked up to see Kakashi entering her office.
"You know, you're supposed to knock and wait to be let inside, not barge in Kakashi," Naruto stated as she closed her Kindle app; the last thing she needed was her older brother knowing what raunchy novels she was reading … especially when she had a ton of work to finish.
Kakashi smirked, or at least it looked like he did under the mask he insisted on wearing all the time. Something about not wanting to be infected with germs and stupidity. At this point, Naruto had given up on his odd behaviours. "But how would I know if you were secretly keeping a man in here if I didn't barge?" Kakashi questioned as he placed a bag of takeaway on her desk.
Naruto rolled her eyes. "Between you and dad, what men would dare enter my office for non-work-related matters. At this rate, I'll just have to sneak into a man's office and jump him myself. What do you say, Kakashi? Is your friend Gai still single?"
Had there been another person in the office room with them, they would have fled in fear from the look Kakashi gave Naruto. But Naruto, being used to her brother's antiques, just laughed as she grabbed one of the food containers.
"Relax, Kakashi, eat. I promised I sprayed down the room with Lysol this morning. Mom said you might be coming over."
Glaring at Naruto once more, Kakashi sat on one of the love seats and pulled down his mask to start eating. "How is the project coming along?"
Naruto sighed as she munched on a meatball. "Well, as usual, we are running short on money; it looks like I might have to take fathers advice and actually hold a fundraiser to ensure we don't fall behind on construction."
Kakashi nodded as they continued to eat in silence. "Naruto, you know you can take the money from me or mom and dad, right?"
Naruto sighed as she put down her fork. "Kakashi," she started when he interrupted her.
"I understand that you are trying to do this all on your own, but would it be so bad? I mean, think about it, it could be a loan from us or even a gift. So it's not like we're going to be missing the money, and it will help hundreds, if not thousands of people who are in need of a home."
This was the argument she had heard countless times, and to be honest, Kakashi was waring her down every time be brought it up. "I know Kakashi, but I don't want to seem like I am doing it to write off our taxes, or because of the image, we have to uphold. I want to accomplish something that does not require me to use our family name and power. Heck, I could take the money from my own trust fund, but it defeats the cause, doesn't it?"
Kakashi smiled as he placed his container on her desk. "I know, but using our money and fame isn't really a bad thing. Its not like dad's the Godfather or something."
Naruto chuckled at that. "I know Kashi," she said, using the nickname she had given him as a baby when she couldn't pronounce Kakashi. "I'm thinking of taking Shikamaru's advice after all and holding a fundraiser. Maybe have some current homeless and previously homeless individuals and families give a talk on how the system is failing at a Black and White Ball to raise awareness and money. It will make the rich look good donating, and they can write off their taxes, killing two birds with one stone."
Kakashi raised his eyebrow as he continued to munch on his pasta. "So, I am assuming you're going to have the gossip queen send the word around to give the right people a nudge before this Ball?"
Smirking, Naruto nodded. She wasn't called a genius for nothing, and if living with Kakashi has taught her anything, it's that it's better to bribe people with honey; after all, it makes manipulating them that much easier. "You know our gossip queen, I'm planning on getting Shikamaru to talk to her tonight; he is much better hinting things. Will you be coming for dinner? Mom has been complaining that she hasn't seen Yumi in a few days."
Kakashi laughed as he looked at the picture of Naruto holding his daughter hours after Rin gave birth. "I think we may be coming. Mom spoke to Rin this morning."
"I can't believe she is going to turn one in a few weeks. I feel like it was yesterday when Rin was waddling around everywhere and throwing things at you because you were taking your time getting the nursery ready." Naruto said as she took the picture into her hand. She couldn't help but smile as she felt her heart get heavy. From the moment she looked at Yumi with a tiny face all scrunched up and red and the tuff of silver hair on her head like her father's, Naruto had fallen in love. She didn't know she could love a person soo much as she did with her niece. She could also see the same reaction as her mom burst into tears holding her first grandchild, or the way dad hugged Kakashi, telling him how proud he was and how proud Sakumo would have been if he was still alive.
While Kakashi wasn't the biological son of Minato and Kashina, he was always treated as such from the moment Sakumo passed away in the line of duty, leaving behind a seven-year-old Kakashi. Being the distant relative and a good friend, Minato immediately adopted Kakashi, even though he had just gotten married a year earlier. And that was the start of their big family. So while Minato and Kushina only had two biological children, they were the proud parents of four, Kakashi Hatake, Iruka Umino, Naruto and Karuma Namikaze.
"You know," Kakashi said mysteriously, "I know how I can make your ball even better."
Naruto raised her brows, "You want to tell me what you're thinking, scarecrow, or do I need to open the windows to lets the crows and have them pluck your hair for their nest?"
Rolling his eyes, Kakashi took another bite of his food. "Since Yumi is turning one, why don't we have to mix your Black and White Ball with Yumi's first birthday party? You know Rin and our parents will insist she has one. And I will be forced to decorate the house with pink unicorns, baby sharks and glitter. This way, I can attend a nice party without Baby Shark played on repeat, it's for a great cause, and I can ask everyone to donate towards your fundraiser instead. And when Yumi gets older, she will know how extra special her birthday was and how many people it helped."
I stared at Kakashi. There was a reason why he was the genius of the family. I wondered how long he was planning this because there was no way he just thought of this. "It's a great idea," I said slowly.
"But?" Kakashi asked as he raised his eyebrows.
"But you know we'll still be having a party for Yumi regardless, right? There is no way anyone would let her share her first birthday with the fundraiser."
"Yes, but this way, it will be way less pink, and mom and Rin will be able to keep the celebration with just family only. This means I won't have to blow up glitter balloons or take down the eye-numbing pink decorations. Better yet, I won't have to talk with bald men and make fake conversations who only come because they want to keep good standing with Dad; instead, you play the hostess, and I get all the credit for making her birthday meaningful."
Yup, there it was. The actual reason for Kakashi coming to me today. If I was terrible at social environments where we had to mingle and make polite conversations with idiots and rich men, Kakashi hated it a hundred times more than I did. And there was no way the first grandchild of Minato and Kushina Namikaze was not going to have a grand celebration for her birthday … in fact, mother booked the hall months ago even though Kakashi has insisted that he wanted a small celebration and specifically told her not to.
"How long have you known?" I asked him.
Kakashi rolled his eyes. "You think I believed Mom when she said she was going to keep the party small? I couldn't think of a good way to negate it until I realized perhaps, I didn't need to negate the party but divert the attention from Rin and I to someone else."
I laughed. "Okay fine. I'll play the hostess at your daughter's birthday party. However, that means you now need to take hold of the attendee's list from Mom and Rin and invite people who will help the fundraiser. I hate asking people for money."
Kakashi nodded his head. "That's fair. I'll also ask her to spread the message. You speak to your team and get everyone up to date. Now if you don't mind me, I have a lunch meeting that I need to get to."
I looked at the clock on wall. It now read 2:15 p.m. I had no idea how Kakashi was able to conduct all his business, despite him showing up hours late but I didn't question it. If I learned anything from him, it was best not to question him.
"Good luck big brother," I called out as he walked out the door, "And I'm still waiting for Gai's number!"
I laughed as Kakashi glared at me as he closed the door to my office. I knew I was going to pay for that comment later, but I couldn't help but smile as I turned my tablet back on to get back to my novel. Kakashi had come in just the right time, I was getting worried about how long it would take actually to finish the project. Every day, single mothers, parents, children, and people with disabilities were being evicted from their homes. The cases of homelessness in the cities were getting higher, and I wanted to create a space where we would be able to improve the economy. But, at the same time, also grant free homes to people who were in desperate need. And the first step was this project.
_._._._._
Naruto heard the sound of Yumi screaming even before she entered the home that evening. It seemed like everyone was home this even, which would be a delight to her mother. However, ever since Kakashi got married and moved out, and Iruka rented a place closer to the school, he was teaching, her mom had become an absolute nightmare. If anyone knew anything about Kushina, it was that she loved people, and with the slight decrease of people living at the Namikaze home, she kept whining about her children leaving her nest. Honestly, if Karuma hadn't told her mother to have another kid, she would have. Although, Naruto was glad her younger sister told her mom as such instead of her since it saved her from getting smacked by the slippers.
"Honey, I'm homeee!" Naruto shouted as she crossed the threshold of the foyer. "And I bring you, guests!"
Shikamaru rolled his eyes, "you say it like I'm not here four times a week."
Laughing, Naruto linked their arms and pulled the lazy genius into the living room, where Rin attempted to pull her hair clip out of Yumi's mouth while Yumi screamed bloody murder.
"Aww, is mommy being mean to my little Froggy?" Naruto cued as she let Shikamaru's arms go, kneeling and opening her arms wide open for Yumi to run into.
Hearing her aunt's voice, Yumi let go of the clip half walked, and half crawled into Naruto's waiting arms, screaming in delight. "Ohh, who's a good girl? My Yumi is a good girl, isn't she? Was mommy a big old meanie?" Naruto cooed as she picked up the small toddler and threw her into the air.
Screaming in delight, Yumi wrapped her small chubby arms around Naruto's neck.
"My, my, why must she always either cry or scream on top of her lungs?" Kakashi sighed as he entered the living room with a cupcake in his hand and plopped himself on the sofa. Rin rolled her eye as she stood up, dusting her knees and sat next to her husband, taking a bite from his cupcake.
Chucking, Shikamaru made himself comfortable on the opposite love seat. "I believe it's called being a child."
"No shit Sherlock," Kakashi retorted as he threw his head back and closed his eye while Rin pinched his side for his comment but also leaned against him, resting her eyes.
Naruto rolled her eyes at the group as she carried Yumi out of the room to find her mother and sister. "Promise me you won't become such a bore like those oldies," she whispered to Yumi, bouncing her on her hips. Then, with a giggling, Yumi, who started playing with her necklace, entered the kitchen to see her mother cooking pasta. At the same time, Iruka cooled and frosted the cupcakes. Then, nicking two off her brother, she gave a delighted Yumi one while placing her in her highchair while taking a bite out of the other.
"Naruto!" Iruka growled, "You will ruin your appetite for dinner. And you shouldn't give Yumi one, and she'll be way too hyper for bedtime."
"Relax, Iruka," Kushina stated as she ground the cheese on top of the pasta. "That's what aunts and grandparents are for. Kakashi and Rin can deal be strict with my little angel. So let her enjoy for now."
Laughing, Naruto stuck her tongue at Iruka. "And you, young lady. Did you wash up?"
Freezing slightly, Naruto grinned nervously as she slowly put down her up cake and raised her hands in surrender. "Sorry, mom. Keep an eye out on Froggy, will you? Her parents look exhausted. I'll wash up and be back in twenty minutes to help set up for dinner."
Both Iruka and Kushina rolled their eyes. The moment Naruto would come back downstairs, Yumi would be entranced by her aunt and would take over looking after Yumi while hollering for everyone to come to the dinner leaving Kushina and Iruka to finish setting everything up for dinner. Kushina shooed Naruto out of the kitchen; all the while, Iruka put down the frosting bag to entertain the latest addition to the Namikaze family.
