Chapter 13: The Brink of the Apocalypse

Mexico City

I woke up to the view of Kol sleeping like an angel and smiled to myself. This was heavenly. Then it faded. I got out of the bed silently and rummaged through my things, looking for his goodbye letter.

We hadn't talked about it. I was afraid to ask him. I sighed, pouring the whiskey into the glass and glanced at the still sleeping Kol. Walking out of the room, I headed to the pool, where it was empty. I took a deep breath, letting the chilly night air greeted me and took off my shirt, leaving me in underwear and climbed into the pool.

Taking a long dip, I allowed myself to stay underwater until I felt my lungs ached. I finally rose to the surface, releasing a heavy breath, I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes.

"Down this path you have decided, only my prayers will keep you guided," Selena's words replayed in my head and my hand went to fiddle with the gold locket absentmindedly.

I couldn't explain my anxiety to anyone. I felt like something terrible is about to happen. Despite having Kol back by my side, it was different. I wasn't happy nor at ease. There's a part of me that knew not all of him came back. And there's a part of me that was lost these past few months.

I sighed, before letting myself sink into the water again, for a couple of minutes until I was yanked off to the surface by a frantic Kol.

"What were you doing?" he asked, his eyes bewildered.

"What?" I asked, still shocked to be interrupted suddenly.

"I woke up and you weren't there," Kol said agitatedly, before realizing what he had spoken and how he had sounded. He shook his head, before running his hands across his face.

"Hey, Kol," I said gently and he took a step back and I looked at him worriedly. "Kol, I'm here," I said, reaching out to touch him before he pulled me into a tight embrace.

"For a second, I thought I was back on the Other Side," he confessed and I felt his fingers dug into my flesh deeper and I tightened the embrace.

"You're with me," I assured him and kissed his cheek. "You're with me," I repeated, this times my eyes locked on his. I realized I was searching for something, although I wasn't really sure.

"Can I ask you something?" Kol asked.

"Sure," I said, suddenly having a bad feeling about it.

"Was it horrible?" he asked.

"What?"

"Living without me?" he asked.

"You saw how miserable I was," I said.

"So you turned it off?" he asked.

"I don't understand what you're trying to say," I told him and he took a deep breath.

"Living without humanity, how is it any better?"

"Are you accusing me of being weak?" I asked.

"No, darling. I needed to understand something," he said. I looked at him, brows furrowed.

"You turned your humanity off, and without it, all your feelings and emotions were gone. You didn't love me at that time," he said.

"Please go on so I know where you're going with this," I said, crossing my arms defensively.

"So why would the no humanity you, still search for ways to bring me back?" he asked and I felt my jaw dropped at his words.

"I don't know, Kol! Maybe because even without humanity I still love you? I still try to make it work even when you decided not to hold the end of our bargain by giving me a stupid letter instead of the list of the witches that could make all of our lives easier?" I screamed, my temper rising.

"Why? Why do you want me back?" he asked and I looked at him, brows furrowed, unable to comprehend his question.

"Are you still doubting my feelings for you? Even after all this time?" I asked, feeling betrayed.

"That's not what I meant," he said, rubbing his temple and I stepped backwards, away as he leaned to touch me. "I needed to say this," he said. "You are not the same person as before."

"Obviously," I snapped. "Both of us have changed, Kol."

"But you're not happy, not anymore," he added and I bit my lower lip.

"I'm not," I answered his statement.

"I don't know what to do," he said and I sighed.

"Neither do I," I replied and we just stared at each other, completely clueless.

"We can go anywhere we want, just, to find that joy of life again," Kol said as we entered our bedroom.

"Yeah, that joy of life was snuffed up the moment I saw you burned to death," I muttered under my breath as I poured some whiskey.

"I am trying to fix things here," Kol said through his gritted teeth.

"Tell me something. Why did you do it?" I asked, in the mood for a fight.

"Did what?"

"Writing a bloody love letter instead of giving me a list of witches that can help us," I said.

"Did you think I was happy to do it?" he asked, his voice rising.

"If you were not happy about it, then why the hell did you do it?" I asked, my voice matching his.

"For your own good. I've done more damage than good to you, darling. And I wanted to spare you-"

"Oh spare me the bullshit! You were willing to sacrifice my happiness and my sanity for your own selfish reason!" I yelled, throwing a vase at him. He dodged and it hit the wall, shattering into pieces.

"What selfish reason? Have you ever loved someone way too much?"

"Yes, I have, and he was taken from me cruelly. I was going to find a way and you, of all person, stopped me!" I said.

"I did it for your own good, Vanessa!" Kol said.

"Who are you to decide what's good for me?" I screamed, slamming him against the wall.

"I'm someone who love you too goddamn much!" he growled and I glared at him.

"You were willing to leave me!" I hissed.

"Because I want the best for you," Kol said and I scoffed.

"Yeah, because being insane was totally what's best for me," I said, letting go of my grips on him.

"Who was it that killed me?" Kol asked angrily, and I threw the glass with the tequila at him.

"Who was it that was stupid enough to carry the only weapon that can kill him in his pocket?" I snapped at him. Our fight was cut off by my ringtone and I huffed, before answering it.

"Marcel, I'm in the middle of a lover's spat," I snapped.

"And we're in the middle of an apocalypse," he said. "Is Kol there?" he asked. I glanced at Kol for a second before turning on the speaker.

"He's here," I said.

"I need to know if the Harvest is real. Will Davina be resurrected or not?" he asked. I realized Marcel was sobbing and I grew worried.

"Marcel…? What's going on?" I asked, concerned.

"Davina, she's…she's not well. She's causing this terrible earthquake and she's throwing up dirt-"

"The magic inside her is about to erupt like a bloody volcano, that's what. No one is supposed to hold that much power," Kol finally spoke.

"Is the Harvest real? Your brother is going to have Davina's throat slit to complete the Harvest," Marcel said. "I just need to know if the Harvest is real. I need to know that she will be resurrected," he said desperately.

"I can't prove it to you, Marcel. My family came to New Orleans after the supposed Harvest ritual. But as far as I know, it is true, and it is real," Kol said. Marcel ended the call and I glanced at Kol.

"We have to go," I said.

"To New Orleans?" Kol asked.

"Yes! Davina needs our help," I said, already throwing my luggage onto the bed.

"No," Kol said.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"I'm not going to allow you to participate in whatever's going on in Mikaelson's family drama," he said.

"Kol, it's Davina!" I said, pleadingly.

New Orleans, three months ago

"Hello," I said, entering the attic.

"Nessie!" Davina grinned, and ran to hug me. It felt…weird. It felt weird to be greeted with such warmth when you were emotionless.

"I need your help," I said.

"What is it?" she asked, ready to help. Suddenly, I felt my emotions on the surface of the door, trying to get it cracked opened. I pulled out Kol's daylight ring and showed it to her. Her brows furrowed before she gasped at her assumption.

"My sister killed Kol, and I need you to bring him back," I said.

"Nessie…I can't-I can't even control my powers. I don't know how to do that," she said. "I have no guidance whatsoever."

"I can get you the spell," I said. "But the rest…I need you to believe in yourself. I know you can, Davina. You're our only hope," I persuaded and she stared at me before nodding in determination.

"I'll try. But we have to at least wait for something. A full moon, or anything," she said and I smiled.

"Thank you," I said, and pulled her into an embrace.

"And Marcel can't know," she said and I grinned.

"Of course. Now, can I get you anything?" I asked.

"I don't know what I needed for the ritual-"

"I meant food, silly," I said and she giggled.

"Some macarons would be great," she said and I gave her a smile.

"I'll be right back," I said and winked at her, before leaving the attic. I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing I'll be able to have Kol by my side again.

The Plantation, French Quarter

"What took you so long?" Klaus greeted me hostilely and I rolled my eyes as I slammed the door shut.

"It's almost the end of the world. I can't get a flight," I said, as I closed the umbrella. I was drenched from head to toe due to the heavy rain Davina is causing.

"Did you find Davina?" I asked.

"Marcel will bring her," Rebekah answered from behind Klaus. "Hi," she said awkwardly.

"Where's Kol?" Klaus asked and I sighed, reaching into my coat for the small bottle containing his blood and showed it to them.

"He send you his regard," I said and our eyes met. I shook my head, signalling Klaus to not question any further and he nodded.

"Let's go then," he said and I followed the Mikaelson siblings to the backyard. They have dug a grave for Esther and I bit my lips. Everyone knew what we were about to do is dangerous. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

"Are you ready to do this?" Father Kieran asked Klaus.

"Always and forever," he replied, before pulling out a dagger and sliced his palm opened. He closed his hand into a fist and let the blood dropped over Esther's grave. He passed it to Rebekah who did the same and she passed it to me. I uncapped the bottle and poured Kol's blood over the grave and passed the dagger to Elijah. After his and Hayley's turn, Father Kieran threw the dagger into the grave.

"It's done," he announced.

La Fayette Cemetery

It was still raining but not as heavily as it was before, and we were startled when the flames erupted under the rain, signalling the fourth and last element. Marcel was carrying Davina in his arms and I felt my heart ached, seeing the little girl so helpless. Marcel placed Davina on the altar and Sophie held the athame over the fire, sterilizing it.

"Do you believe in the Harvest?" Sophie asked Davina.

"I believe," she replied nervously. I couldn't ignore the rapid thumping of Davina's heartbeats and our eyes met for a second. I had to look away, just before Sophie slit her throat. Her heartbeats slowed and I heard her gasp, and it wasn't until her heart completely stopped that I return my gaze to her. Marcel was holding her and he wouldn't let anyone touch her. The rain stopped immediately, which was a good sign that this ritual is true.

Marcel then laid Davina next to the other three girls as we prepared for the next step.

"After the Harvest comes the Reaping. Their sacrifices made and accepted. We call upon our Elders to resurrect the chosen ones!" Sophie exclaimed. "We call upon our Elders to resurrect the chosen ones." Her words were met with silence. Nothing was happening.

I looked at Klaus who was disappointed as well.

"Resurrect your chosen ones! Please? I beg…" Sophie pleaded, before she fell to her knees and started sobbing.

"I knew Elijah's plan was mad, but I really thought it would work," I heard Rebekah said as I entered the room.

"So did I. I was sure Davina would survive. There was so much life in her," Klaus said as he poured a drink for me.

"Are you staying here?" he asked.

"Just for one night. We all had a long day," I said and sighed.

"Are you alright?" he asked and I nodded.

"Yeah, devastated a little. I thought it was going to work," I said, taking a sip and feeling the burn on my throat.

"Not that," Klaus said and I glanced at him.

"Oh, yeah. I'm fine," I shrugged, dismissing his concern.

"What happened?" Rebekah asked and I glanced at her, still not over the fact that she went after the cure with the people that killed Kol.

"None of your business," I said snidely and bade them goodnight. I headed to one of the empty rooms and unpacked some of my stuff. After taking a long, hot shower, I finally turned on my phone, and saw at least 15 missed calls from Kol.

How did it go?

I stared at his text before typing my reply.

It didn't work. Davina's gone.

It took seconds for him to read and I saw he typed for a while, before his status went offline. I stared at my screen until it turned black, before letting out a frustrated scream and throwing my phone against the wall. I grabbed the pillow under my head and covered my face with it.

Perhaps we succeeded in averting apocalypse on New Orleans, but unfortunately we weren't able to do the same with our relationship.

I'm sorry it happened this way but they just need some time apart from each other, have faith!
