"Awe we thewe yet?"
John felt like tearing his hair out. When he set out to Blue Earth, Minnesota with a two year old and a six year old, he didn't take into account that the long trip would quickly turn into a driver's worst nightmare.
"Daddy! Awe we thewe yet?" Sam's voice snapped him out of his reverie. This was the possibly the twentieth time his youngest had asked that question, last time being ten minutes ago.
"No Sammy we still have a bit of time until we reach the motel." John answered patiently.
"But daddy I wanna get to Unca Jim's." Sam whined.
"I know tiger, so do I, but don't you want to sleep on a bed tonight?" John asked.
Sam's lower lip started to wobble so Dean quickly jumped in.
"Hey Sammy, don't you want to build a fort out of the motel pillows? Otherwise the knights will think Prince Sammy is gone forever."
Sam's face lit up, all traces of sadness wiped away "Yeah! We build a fowt."
John internally sighed with relief, silently thanking Dean. The boys had started a conversation about their game, so John let his mind wander while driving. He barely noticed that the boys had stopped talking and was savoring the silence until a voice piped up.
"Awe we thewe yet?"
John almost screamed.
O
A couple hours later found John pulling into the motel parking lot. Dean and Sam had nodded off to sleep around two hours earlier, and they were still sound asleep. Getting out of the car, he checked in the shook Dean awake, hating that he had to.
"Dean, buddy, we're here." John said quietly.
Dean opened his eyes blearily and rubbed his eyes "Daddy?"
John grabbed him from his underarms and gently pulled him out of the car, pressing a kiss to his hair as he steadied the half-asleep boy and handed him the key.
"Go on ace, change then go to bed."
Dean nodded and trudged to the room. Making sure that Dean entered the room, he reached into the car and pulled the sleeping two-year-old out, settling him on his hip. Sam stirred then immediately stilled, burying his face in the crook of John's neck, mumbling an 'I wuv you daddy.'
John smiled at his baby's attachment and affection for him. Sam, unlike Dean, was clingier and cuddlier, preferring to stay with someone in his family, which also included Jim, Mac, Bobby, Caleb, and Joshua. John didn't blame him. With all the moving they did, Sam like all other kids needed some form of stability. That came most often in the form of John and Dean, even if Dean stayed with his brother while John went to hunt. That didn't stop Sam from throwing himself at his father whenever John was around.
Walking into the motel room with Sam held securely into his arms, he found Dean already in bed, half asleep, but his arms were outstretched, waiting for the precious burden in John's arms to be transferred into his own.
John smiled and laid Sam on the other bed, gently pulling his baby's shoes, socks, jeans, and shirt off and replacing them with the green dinosaur pajamas in Sam's duffel after changing his diaper. Then he carried him back to where Dean waited and placed him carefully into his brother's awaiting arms. Leaning down, he pressed a kiss to each of his son's forehead.
"Goodnight ace, goodnight tiger." He whispered to his now sleeping sons, staring down at them with affection in his eyes that only a parent could have.
Wiping a hand across his mouth, John carefully laid down the salt lines and any other protective charms, folded Sam's discarded clothes than pulled on a pair of sweatpants after shucking his jeans and slipped under the covers of the other bed.
John was awakened the next morning by a tiny foot connecting with his stomach followed by giggling sounds. Rolling onto his back, smiling, he reached under the covers and began poking the little body, followed by tickling, which transformed the giggled into shrieks of laughter. Mentally praising himself for finding a motel with barely few people in it, he sat up in bed and pulled the body of his youngest out from under the covers, in fear that he would suffocate. Plopping Sam in his lap, he pressed kisses to the giggling child's face and head.
"Morning tiger, did you sleep well?" John said as he held his youngest in his lap and just savored the moment.
"Uh huh daddy. We goin to Unca Jim?" Sam asked, hazel eyes wide and expressive.
John laughed and ruffled his hair "Let's wake your brother up, get some breakfast then we'll hit the road." Smirking as Sam jumped out of his arms and launched himself at a still sleeping Dean who shrieked and fell out of bed. Shaking his head at his sons' antics, he got out of bed and into the bathroom to start the day.
After eating breakfast and finishing their morning routines, the Winchesters were on the road again.
By midday, John was pulling into the driveway of Jim's farm where a tall man was coming down the stairs, smiling widely in anticipation of their arrival.
Pulling the car to a stop, John exited the car and opened the door for his sons. Dean and Sam got out and started looking around excitedly. The smiles on their faces got wider when they saw the teenager standing at the bottom of the porch stairs, a knowing expression of what was to come etched on his face.
"Joshie!" Sam hollered as he ran towards Joshua with his brother close behind.
Joshua laughed and caught Sam when the child jumped into his arms, then threw him in the air, eyes twinkling as he heard the child squeal and giggle. "Hey tiger!". Transferring the bundle of joy to one arm, he used his other to ruffle Dean's hair and hug him.
"How're you doin' Ace."
Dean smiled and wrapped his arms around his uncle's waist "I'm great Josh, Uncle Jim said he's making his peach pie."
Joshua threw his head back and laughed "Well then don't make me keep you waiting. Jim, Bobby and Caleb are waiting for you. Get inside kiddos." He said as he put Sam down and watched as the two brothers ran to the stairs then Dean help little Sammy climb the stairs since the two year old could barely climb them.
"Those kids of yours will be the death of me John." Joshua shook his head as he greeted John and embraced him then helped him carry two of the four bags he had.
"You and me both." John replied as they entered Jim's house to an amusing scene.
Dean and Bobby were seated on the kitchen table, their eyes closed in an attempt to savor the slices of peach pie they were eating. Meanwhile, an amused Jim was carrying Sam, bustling around the kitchen, while Caleb was following him, trying to persuade him to transfer the child to him.
"Come on old man, you've had your share of the kid. It's my turn now!" Caleb whined.
"I will when you stop acting like a three year old." Jim said amusedly as he gave a cookie to Sammy then crossed the room to greet John.
John smirked then sat down at the table.
"Bobby you need some alone time with that pie?" John teased.
Bobby scowled "Shut yer trap, Johnny. The old man wouldn't let me near it until Dean came."
"The old man can hear you just fine." Jim told Bobby then he turned to Caleb and transferred Sam to his arms. "Since you're so keen on holding Sammy, you can change his diaper then." Jim said with a satisfying smirk at a glaring Caleb who then shrugged.
"Wouldn't be the first time. Johnny where's the diaper bag?" Caleb asked.
John handed him the bag but Jim jumped in "No need for that, I've got a box of pampers on the changing table upstairs."
The rest of the men stared at him.
"What, he's my nephew too." He told them.
Caleb then threw Sam in the air "Come on Sammy, let's get you a clean diaper." He told the still giggling child clinging to his neck.
Dinnertime found the three hunters, two teenagers, and Dean sitting in the chairs at Jim's dining table eating the meal Jim cooked while Sammy sat in the highchair Jim kept around for him, with John feeding him spoonfuls of mashed potatoes and chicken.
They then moved on to lounge on the couches in the living room with Dean sandwiched between John and Jim, and Sammy curled in Joshua's lap on the rocking chair. The children were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the adults talking and in Sammy's case, Joshua's rocking.
As John lay in bed with Dean and Sam on the other bed, he felt relaxed and light for the first time in a very long while. He and his boys were spending some quality time with his extended family, and the boys were beyond happy. 'What could go wrong?' was John's last thought before he drifted off to sleep.
Little did he know that things were about to go wrong in just a few days.
