One more break, and trust challenges! Not the easiest thing for a girl who finds it hard to trust anyone, even those she likes. Thanks for reviewing, OmniIBIBUltraInstinctGodzilla, lordegemini and Gucci Mane LaFlare.
I did apologize to Harold later that morning, telling him that I didn't know what the guys were going to do, only that they wanted all the girls to go swimming that morning. He sort of shrugged, not really rejecting or forgiving me, but he sought me out in the afternoon and told me that he knew I wouldn't have really tried to embarrass him and he believed I wasn't guilty. "DJ told me you didn't approve of what they were doing," he clarified. "And Geoff said he didn't tell any of the girls why he wanted them there."
At least the guys had spared me that. "How are they acting now?" I asked.
"All right. DJ's mostly leaving me alone. Geoff's okay, too. Duncan doesn't seem to be able to stop teasing me, so I'm trying to ignore it."
"You should ask Courtney to get him to stop," I advised. "I think she's the only one he'd listen to."
Harold shrugged. "If you ask her, she might listen to you. She acts like I'm nothing but a liability."
I couldn't argue with that. I just gave him a sympathetic look, and said "I'll ask, but she doesn't really listen to me, either. The only one she listens to is Bridgette."
I did end up asking Courtney if she could tell Duncan to lay off Harold, just by saying "It's not good for the team."
But Courtney didn't listen, just as I'd expected. "I'm not going to talk to Duncan if I don't have to. He's just so annoying."
Bridgette and I exchanged glances behind Courtney's back. She'd already told me that Gwen told her that Leshawna said she was waiting to use the confessional at one point after the cooking challenge while Courtney was in the confessional, telling the camera about five times that she and Duncan would never be a couple. The fact that she felt the need to say that at all made me think that it was likely to happen.
The fourth week opened with a day of multiple challenges. Chris called us all out to the dock after breakfast. "So, last week's challenge exposed a few Gopher issues," he said (Heather was glaring at Leshawna…and Gwen for some reason, even though she didn't do anything), "And I'm sensing something a little funky floating in the Bass pond too." As he spoke, I didn't see what happened, but Duncan was face-down on the dock in seconds.
So the challenges were all going to be trust exercises. Well, Chris said there would be three of them. That meant at least one Bass member would be left out. Well, hopefully I'd do well if I wasn't the one left out. And if I was and we lost…well, I'd have at least two people who had messed up, since it was basically whoever won more challenges.
The first challenge was freehand rock climbing, which I didn't have to do. One person stayed on the ground with ropes, and they had to harness their partner up. Whoever got to the top first won.
Our team had DJ and Duncan picked to do it. DJ climbed. The Gophers had Heather and Gwen, and Heather straight out refused to climb because "If you think I'm letting you hold me up, you're nuts." She also said she wasn't going to throw the challenge just because she hated Gwen. "Yet."
I wasn't too worried about the challenge as far as the guys went. Well, not until Chris said there were a few mild explosives and rusty nails on the cliff. I just had to hope DJ wouldn't hit those things. DJ had his pet rabbit (remember, from the night in the woods) with him, but obviously he couldn't come up too. DJ gave him to Geoff to look after. That's how one of the troubles started.
As it was, Chris also sprayed the two on the ground with hot sauce. Heather accidentally let go of Gwen's rope for a second, but Duncan just opened his mouth and let the sauce in. "Is that the best you can do?'
Something even worse happened soon after. Heather had attached what she claimed was a back-up line to Gwen's harness. At this point, she called out "Come on, Gwen! You don't wanna fall…behind!" And she jerked the extra line. Within seconds, Gwen's short skirt ripped.
Seriously, I don't know what would have happened if Duncan and DJ hadn't got distracted and both ended up hanging, but Gwen got to the top first, holding half of her skirt up. At least she was wearing tights, so she wasn't too terribly exposed. Though, I had to admit, she didn't have too bad a figure.
When she was back on the ground, I asked in a sympathetic whisper "Do you have something else to wear? I have some extra leggings if you want them."
Gwen just waved a hand and said "I have another one almost the same. No big deal…but thanks." And she actually smiled at me.
We didn't get to see the next challenge, but Geoff and Bridgette told us about it during a break. They actually won the challenge. Bridgette and Lindsay made fugu sashimi for Geoff and Trent respectively (and it was just a coincidence it was the two girls, no sexism – Geoff let Bridgette cook because he was head chef last challenge and Lindsay volunteered). Aka, poisonous blowfish. They had to slice it carefully, around the poisonous parts, and the two guys had to eat it, trusting that the girls did it right. And Geoff and Bridgette won because Lindsay nearly killed Trent by doing it wrong, of course. Apparently Chef had some way to cure him, though, so that was good.
"Good news, everyone!" Chris told us after a lunch break. "The third challenge is comprised of three challenges. It's the three blind challenges!" Which was why it looked like everyone would have to compete after all.
I ended up getting paired with Courtney for the third challenge, and I was also put in the last challenge, this time with DJ.
In the third challenge, it started with the blind William Tell in reverse. Courtney had to throw apples at me while blindfolded until one of them knocked an arrow off my head. Leshawna got Owen, who had so much flab that a few apples probably wouldn't even bruise him.
We didn't win. Mainly because Courtney was shooting really slowly, trying to figure out where my head was. Leshawna went quickly and although she hit Owen a few times, she got the arrow off first, just as Courtney was taking her second shot, which actually hit my chin.
Well, at least I couldn't be blamed for that one.
Of course, we had to win another challenge to make the fifth one a tiebreaker. This time, it was a trapeze. One teammate (Harold and Lindsay this time) had to hang from a trapeze over a pool full of jellyfish. Then they had to tell their blindfolded partners (Bridgette and Heather) when to jump and catch them.
Meanwhile, Geoff told DJ that his rabbit had…hopped away. He'd clearly lost it somehow, but I didn't ever actually find out what happened to that thing.
It was actually really cool to see Bridgette jump and Harold catching hold of her hands in mid-air. Of course, Lindsay told Heather to jump at the wrong time and she had to go to the infirmary for jellyfish stings.
DJ and I had a blind toboggan race, and I was really desperate to win this time. DJ had to steer, and I had to direct him, so when I had to trust Courtney last time, DJ had to trust me. And worse, we were up against Leshawna and Gwen. Why was it I had to always go up against my crush?
DJ didn't really want to do it. "Bunny deserted me," he said in a low voice. "Why should I trust you?"
"DJ, you were my first friend on this island," I pointed out. "I know you're sad about Bunny, but we need to do this. This could kill both of us if you don't steer. Don't take this the wrong way, but I really love you and I would never try to steer you wrong."
Because of DJ's depression, though, we started off not doing too well. I had to yell every direction twice before he'd do anything. At least, until we heard Duncan calling "Hey, DJ, look who I found!"
I looked over. In Duncan's hands was another rabbit. "DJ!" I called. "Duncan found Bunny!"
DJ chanced looking over the blindfold for proof, but immediately became the best ever racer, and we finished ahead of the Gophers.
But taking off the blindfold, even for a second, was enough to make us lose. We'd just lost two challenges, and I was in both.
I wrote another little note to Leshawna before the campfire ceremony: I'm worried I might go home tonight, but I'm still not ready to let you know who I am. Just know that I'm hoping you might figure it out. At least, if you're not into me, I'll know it sooner. But even if you're not, I'd still love it if you'd be my friend and help me be more like you. Love from your secret admirer.
But I didn't go home. I'd fully expected it to be DJ, or me, or possibly Courtney. But no, it was actually Geoff for losing Bunny in the first place. He'd also not had to do anything in the challenge except trust Bridgette, but still.
Bridgette gave him a sad smile as he got up. "I'll really miss you," she told him. "I'm glad I got to get to know you."
Geoff smiled back. "Me too. It was really cool, working with you." They walked down the dock together, still talking.
I didn't hear what they said, but I definitely saw a kiss before Bridgette walked back to us, smiling.
There's a gender imbalance now. I am definitely bringing a guy back, so I'm wondering if maybe I should bring one returnee back before the Brunch of Disgustingness and have one girl sit out of the eating challenges entirely? Yeah…I think that's what I'll do.
