For gumnut who asked for Prompt 21: Things you said when we were on top of the world. With Scott and Virgil
Such a feelin's comin' over me
There is wonder in most every thing I see
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
And I won't be surprised if it's a dream
Virgil hummed to himself as he climbed. Today was a good day, the sun was shining and there were no clouds. It was a perfect day to finally conquer the twin summits of the very originally named Tracy Peak.
He'd be meaning to do it for weeks, but helping his dad to set up a secret base in the middle of nowhere was actually very time consuming. Finally, he had some free time and he was going to climb this mountain today!
Everything I want the world to be
Is now comin' true especially for me
And the reason is clear, it's because you are here
You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen
There was a grunt above him. Of course, the other reason he was so happy was that Scott had finally come out to the island, and his big brother – and keen climber – was ahead of him, making sure everything was secure and safe.
They had had so little time together over the last six years, despite being inseparable as children, that having Scott here, actually doing something just the two of them, was making Virgil the happiest he had been in a long, long time.
Knowing what they were aiming for here on Tracy Island, the future they would all be striving for together, was intoxicating. Having not only Scott, but eventually all their brothers here and together again, was a special type of heaven.
Something in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees, and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasing sense of happiness for me
As they reached the highest peak and flopped down on the small platform created because Jeff knew his sons would not be able to resist climbing the volcano, Scott and Virgil looked around and down on their new home.
There was hardly a breeze down at the base of the peak, but up here there was a gentle wind that carried slight sounds of the birds and wafted exotic perfumes up to them. If Virgil listened really hard he swore he could hear the slight rustle of the tress.
'Well, what do you think, Virg?' Scott sat there, elbows on knees, eyes on the sky and the lone bird soaring in eyesight. Virgil, pose identical but with eyes on the jungle beneath them, sighed contentedly.
'Its beautiful. I never dreamed that we could ever live in a place like this. Did you know that there are so many protected species here, both on the cliffs and in the water? Gordon is going to blow a gasket! And the sky here is so full of stars, we won't be able to get John to leave!'
Scott chuckled. 'That really wasn't what I meant. What do you think about Dad's idea for International rescue? And the ships?' He threw his arm around his brother as Virgil coloured slightly.
'Everything is changing. Nothing is ever going to be the same once we start, but I, for one, am ecstatic about the change. In fact, I don't think I have ever felt such a sense of happiness.'
Scott nodded. He felt much the same. After being discharged on medical grounds from the air force, he had serious doubts that he would ever find something to make him as happy. Then his Dad had approached him about this idea, and Scott was hooked. There had been no surprise that Virgil was already involved.
I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found, ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world
And their ships! Scott knew that he was in love with One. There would never be another ship to rival his in his estimation, and he was pretty sure Virgil would feel the same about Two. He knew Gordon and John would, as would Alan when he was old enough.
'And Two? How do you feel about that green monstrosity?'
Virgil spluttered on his water. 'Monstrosity? How dare you! She is the lynchpin of this operation, the most important 'bird. She is amazing, though Scott, seriously.' And Virgil had that dreamy look in his eyes that Scott was sure he had had the first time he had laid eyes on One.
'Lynchpin, eh?' he said, knocking shoulders. 'Most important 'bird? Do I have to remind you who will get there first to assess the situation?'
Virgil knocked him back. 'Yeah, yeah. But you can't rescue anyone without my baby.'
And the two dissolved into fits of laughter. They both knew that this was an argument that neither would win, and one that was going to be repeated for the rest of their lives.
Looking down on creation, high up on that mountain, the two felt on top of the world. Their future was being built beneath them. But more importantly, they were together in this, brothers forever.
And they had wings to soar.
