It had been a few days after the birth of the twins, and the (sort of) new parents were trying their best to juggle their new family members.
Paternity leave gives them the chance to also leave their secondary personas for a few weeks. Ralph, Miles, Barry, and Cisco should be able to keep the city safe without Crystal Frost, Metalla, and Spider-Man for a while.
But it seemed that the kids decided today was the perfect day to go on a sleep strike. They had been crying all night and day, it going into noon there was no sign of either of them stopping.
Caitlin walked into the living room holding her crying baby son. Her hair was a mess due to the lack of time to shower and fix it. There were bags under her eyes due to the lack of sleep, and she had been wearing the same clothes for the past day or two due to the two of them.
Frost has also taken a mental leave, never really answering when Peter and Caitlin call her out. Seems even she has had enough of the crying and wanted a moment for "me time". That time seemed to have gone on ever since the twins wouldn't quiet down and just wouldn't stop.
"Sweet, sweet, Tommy, don't you want to sleep?" Caitlin asked as she tried to bounce and rock her son to sleep. "Mommy wants to sleep. She wants to sleep so bad." But all Tommy did in response was cry even louder. "If you go to sleep, I promise you will be my favorite twin!" She tried bargaining with the week-old baby.
That's when Peter came down the stairs, holding his crying baby daughter. His hair was also a mess due to the lack of sleep and time to shower and comb it. His clothes were covered with the food they tossed around, spit/spit up, and don't even ask about the stain on his hip.
"Oh, come on, Cait." Peter rolled his eyes when he heard the attempt to bargain with her son. "You know we love them both equally."
"Well, don't tell him that," Caitlin said as she was ready to burst into tears at this point with her kids. "No luck with Tina?"
Peter nodded negatively. "Tried reading to her, but for some reason, the book made her cry even harder."
That's when Frankie walked in into the living room. The lack of sleep didn't bother her, due to the fact she actually has been sleeping at a few friends' houses the last few nights.
"Let me guess, one of your Spider-man bedtime books?" Frankie asked.
Over the post-crisis timeline, they learned that Peter, alongside selling a Christmas album, also sold dozens of books showing the truth to his many adventures over the years. Even a bit of his origin story, just leaving out key characters' names and locations to not give away his secret identity.
"What? I thought that would work." Peter defended, seeing as Tina would usually calm down for him. Caitlin's current theory is that she might be a daddy's girl. "I mean, it did work for Taina."
"Who?" Caitlin and Frankie asked him.
"Maria Taina Elizando." Peter tried to explain when he then noticed their faces and realized they were never told the story. "Oh, I guess I never told you guys about her?"
"Nope," Caitlin confessed, holding Tommy's head and trying to get him to quiet down.
"First I've heard of it," Frankie admitted.
"Well, she's..." Peter was going to explain it to them when an idea came to his mind. "Wait, I just got an idea. Let's put the babies in the crib."
Caitlin looked to Frankie, unsure what her husband was planning and Frankie shrugged it off. Peter put Tina in the crib on the right, while Caitlin put Tommy in the crib on the left. After the two were settled, still crying their ears off, the family of three sat down on the couch.
"Okay, little guys, daddy is going to tell you a very wonderful story," Peter told the kids as they cried as loud as they could. "A story that he will never forget. Once upon a time, there was an 8-year-old girl named Maria Taina Elizando who lives in a place called Wish Come True Foundation for Terminally Ill Children. She was Spider-man's biggest fan, has an entire decoration on him in her room, and kept Spider-man photos I used to take for the Bugle in her scrapbook..."
Peter told them everything about Taina, that he was going through a rough time when he started being Spider-Man and how he was even thinking of stopping. The words of the people hating him for helping finally being enough to drive him over the edge to the point he was going to trash the suit. Then he started telling how he explained to her how he became Spider-man and why.
As the day went on he took her for a swing, but that day was interrupted when he was mindwiped by Dr. Octopus, and he went on to explain how she saved him by reminding him of who he was and what he meant to her and many other kids.
After stopping Doc Ock, she asked her hero if he can tell her his true identity. He was reluctant to do it, but in the end, he did. She promised that she will keep his secret for the rest of my life. Before he left, he read a Spider-Man bedtime book for her and fell asleep.
A few weeks later, she passed away, and Peter attended her funeral. That one little girl helped Peter regain his confidence and faith in himself, and for that, he will never forget her.
After the story, the babies fell asleep and noticed that his wife and daughter Frankie cried.
"What's wrong?" Peter asked the two of them, not expecting this reaction from them.
"That was the most beautiful story that I have ever heard in my life," Caitlin told him as she pecked his cheek.
"Same here, dad." Frankie had to agree.
"Ditto." Crystal finally showed her face for the first time in days.
With that, the 3 of them came in for a hug.
After a few moments, Frankie noticed that their grip had become weak and backed away to then realize that her family had fallen asleep right there and then.
Rolling her eyes, she decided to leave the two of them to sleep and walked away to find something to do until they were well-rested.
