CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

"Allie Bean! Are you ready?"

"Almost, Dad!"

Nathan couldn't help but beam, this beautiful girl who had brought so much joy to his life was now, in every way that mattered, indeed his Daughter.

Nathan had always had the official papers that verified he was Allie's legal guardian. Colleen had asked him to make sure that was done immediately before her death.

But after Colleen's death, he had even gone the extra mile, making sure also that her biological father signed over his parental rights to him, so there could never be a question about who Allie would be raised by.

He had done it, not for himself, but for Allie, doing everything in his power to protect her from a man who was an alcoholic and prone to violent outbursts. And although his sister would have never admitted it to him, Nathan had seen far too many bruises to not know Colleen's husband had actually abused his sister. So, Nathan did everything in his power to make sure that never happened to Allie.

The thing that always bothered Nathan, actually shook him to the core would be a more accurate description, was just how easy that process had been. It had taken quite some time to track the man down and find him sober. But after that was accomplished, even sober, he willingly signed any and all rights as Allie's father away, without so much as an 'I'm sorry.' or 'Tell her I love her.' Nathan had never and would never understand how a man could do that to his own flesh and blood. Basically, give his daughter away without even so much as a thought, or a message of any sort to her.

Even given all that, Nathan had never wanted to push Allie in any way, so Uncle Nathan, it had always been.

But now it was Dad, and the word filled his heart with both a Fatherly love and pride that was difficult to explain. Now, Father and Daughter could truly heal and move forward together.

"Coming, Dad!"

He watched her as she bounded down the stairs and reached to kiss her tenderly.

"You have everything? It's going to be a long day."

"Yes Sir, I added a few books just in case. But you know Little Jack, he requires a lot of attention!"

"I'm sure he does! You know Allie, Elizabeth pays Laura to look after Jack, so why don't I pay you to do the same today."

"But, if he's going to be my Brother, you shouldn't have to pay me to take care of him."

"Well, that's true, and I appreciate that Allie, but this is a little different since it's a day trip. Don't forget Christmas is coming soon, and you've got new Uncles and an Auntie to buy for, not to mention Mrs. Thornton and Jack!"

"Oh, Dad, Christmas is going to be so much fun! I'd almost forgotten! This is going to be the best Christmas ever!"

"Yes, Sweetheart, you're right. We're going to make it our very best Christmas ever!"

And they grabbed each other in a big hug!

"Want to ride the sleigh one last time to Elizabeth's?"

"Yes, please! Let's go!"

It was such a short distance to Elizabeth's row house he checked his watch to see if he'd have time to take Allie around the pond. That way, too, the sleigh would be pointed in the right direction.

"Let's stretch this ride out a bit. Once around the pond?"

"Yes, please!"

Nathan marveled at the pure joy in her face, and he wanted to always remember Allie just like this.

"Look, Dad! The pond's frozen!"

"It sure is. Allie, you do know never to go out on the pond unless I'm there, right? Promise?"

"Promise!"

"It can be really dangerous."

"See, that's one of the many ways you make me feel loved, Dad, just like the poem says!"

He smiled back at her, with a smile full of love and tenderness.

"Allie, you're something else!"

They glided across the hardened snow, taking in the nature around them in silence.

Finally, they were at Elizabeth's front door.

"Uncle Lee!" He was checking out his car but ran over to lift Allie out of the sleigh and give her a big hug.

"How's my beautiful girl?"

Allie blushed and giggled.

"You all have fun today! I better go in and check on Little Jack. Are you coming, Dad?"

Lee raised his eyebrows and gave Nathan a huge smile with a slap on the back.

"Do you need anything, Lee?"

"Not a thing, you go get Elizabeth on the move. We're ready to leave when you all are!"

Elizabeth came to the door to let Allie in, and Nathan quickened his step.

"Hold on, make room for me!"

Elizabeth giggled and pulled him in close to her."

"Good morning, Constable Grant!"

"Oh, so we're formal today!"

"Come here! Allie's gone upstairs with Little Jack!"

He moved closer, "You don't have to ask me twice!" and he kissed her longingly.

She moved her arms as close around his neck as she could get them, and whispered, "You know, I could get addicted to this."

"You better already be addicted to this, my Darling!"

And they kissed again, lovingly and longingly.

"I can't believe we get to spend the whole day together!" he whispered.

"There was no way I was letting you return our sleigh by yourself!"

"One of the many reasons I love you, Elizabeth Thornton! But we better tear ourselves apart and get started, or we'll never make it. Lee and Rosemary are waiting for us now!"

"Children! Allie, can you bring Little Jack downstairs, please? Laura," she called to the kitchen, "we're ready to leave!"

Nathan took Little Jack from Allie and lifted him to the ceiling, which brought gales of laughter!

Allie and Laura couldn't help but laugh too.

Elizabeth stood there, beaming with love and pride, two of the many feelings she felt whenever she saw her two men together!

It was as though Nathan and Little Jack were already bonded at the hip, and it had just been a week since they had formally committed to each other as a couple. But it was like Allie and Little Jack had known long before that! Little Jack was so happy when he was with Nathan. He always had been. Everyone saw it!

"Laura, do you have everything you need?"

"Yes, Mrs. Thornton. We'll do great. Thanks for letting Allie help me. She's so good with Jack. I don't think we'll have any problems."

"Perfect, bye, my Little Sweet Thing! Hugs and kisses to you and Allie!" Elizabeth hugged and kissed them both. "Oh, and Laura, I set out a book on my desk, you might want to read it when the children take their naps!"

"Thanks, Mrs. Thornton, with Allie here, Jack and I are going to be more than fine!"

"Oh, almost forgot, since the Coulters are going with us, I asked Judge Avery if he would stop by when the restaurant calms down from lunch, to check in on you."

"And Laura, I asked Gabe to check in a couple of times too. Just in case you need anything."

"Nathan, you really do think of everything!" And Elizabeth gave him a quick hug of thanks.

"Go, I think the Coulters are waiting for you. Mrs. Coulter was motioning that they were ready at the side window in the kitchen several minutes ago. I think she's pretty excited!" urged Laura.

"Enjoy your day, Sweetheart!" And Nathan gave Allie one last hug with a kiss. "Jack, be good for these two lovely ladies!" And Nathan gave Jack a kiss and tousled his hair, which left the toddler giggling.

"You, Mrs. Thornton, come with me!" He smiled as he helped her into her coat, then handed her gloves and scarf to her.

"Are you ready, Darling?" he asked, knowing how hard it was for her to leave. She nodded hesitantly, so he gave her a big smile and waited patiently till she was sure.

Allie and Little Jack got one last hug and kiss.

"Now, I'm ready. Bye Loves! Be good for Laura!" And she turned to go out the door before she thought of something else for poor Laura!

Nathan took her hand and gave her a quick, reassuring kiss.

"Everything's going to be fine, I promise. Between Bill and Gabe checking in on them, we have nothing to worry about!"

Lee and Rosemary had been patiently waiting, well with as much patience as Rosemary can ever muster!

"Finally!" she called, "It is pretty cold out here, you know!"

"Sorry, Rosemary, you know how I hate to leave!"

Nathan lifted her into the sleigh and went to confer with Lee.

"How do we want to do this?"

"We'll go as slow as we can, in case you run into any trouble with the sleigh. But if we do get too far ahead of you, we'll pull over and wait to make sure you're okay. If something goes wrong, just fire your pistol, and we'll head back in your direction."

"Smart plan, Lee. Thank you both for doing this with us!"

He got back into the sleigh and reached for the extra blankets he had loaded in this morning to keep Elizabeth warm.

"There you go, my Darling! Snug as a bug!"

"Yeah, I look like a bug, too! One wrapped in a cocoon!" she pouted.

"You look like a very warm, beautiful bug to me!"

And he reached over to give his bug a very passionate kiss, right in the middle of the road in front of their houses!

Elizabeth giggled, "I'm so happy bugs can kiss!"

Nathan just looked at her shaking his head and laughed gently.

And off they went, with Rosemary and Lee pulling out in their car in front of them.

"You know, I'm thrilled Lee and Rosemary are coming with us. But..." and she looked up at him coquettishly, "I'm even happier, we've got this time alone!"

His eyes were sparkling, and that crooked smile filled his face as he turned to look at her.

"Perfectly said, Love! Couldn't agree more."

"You know, Nathan, I've been thinking. If the cabin really is to be yours..."

"Ours, Darling! Ours!" he smiled, forcefully reiterating it.

"If the cabin really is to be ours, and I love the sound of that, shouldn't we maybe think about getting a sleigh of our own for the winter months?"

"It would take training the horses, but I think that could be arranged. Actually, it's a fairly practical idea to have one on standby for the winter months, especially if we plan to enjoy the cabin then. I'll talk to the man we're delivering it to and see if he knows where one can be purchased. I have no idea what they sell for, but it shouldn't really be much more than double the price of a good wagon, I would think. It would be wonderful to have one during Christmas."

"I would love that! You know Friday night, I just wanted to stay in that cabin with you forever. Who would have thought it would be yours, I mean ours, by Monday?"

"I know, such a wonderful surprise! Elizabeth, the acreage that comes with it is remarkable based on what Lee is telling me. I think it's really too far out of town for us to think about building on it. But Lee is really excited about some of the trees on the far North edges of the property. He says they need to be thinned out anyway and thinks they would give us extraordinary wood for the houses we both want to build. If you agree, I thought maybe we could give Lee the wood for both houses free of charge, and then maybe he would be willing to build at a reduced rate."

"Nathan, if Lee gets that wood, which he's always wanted, I think he would build for free. He has said before that the wood in that area was priceless, but he's had trouble getting his hands on any of it!"

"Hmm, well, at least we have a game plan: a rustic vacation cabin in the woods, a sleigh, and two homes side by side with the most beautiful wood in the country by next winter!"

"I love the sound of that! I've never been so excited, Nathan!"

Elizabeth scooted to the edge of her seat and turned to kiss him, so he could still see to drive.

"You, my Love, are a major distraction. How am I supposed to keep...my ….eyes on the road?"

"What road?"

"You are so bad!" he sighed, "But I love you anyway!"

"You better!"

"Elizabeth, I have so much to tell you, I barely know where to start..."

"Start with the most important first!"

"Okay, last night when Allie and I got home, she seemed rattled and asked for a Family Conference. I don't think I've ever seen her quite so upset."

Elizabeth's face fell.

"Oh, no Darling, not about us! At first, I couldn't tell what it was. But it turns out that although she was overjoyed about her new Uncles and Aunt, she didn't feel it was appropriate to call me the same thing as them. It took lots of tears and holding, but I finally got her to tell me she wanted to call me Dad!"

"Oh, Nathan! How wonderful! You are her Dad. Everyone thinks of you as her Dad. I'm just glad it's now official! How does it make you feel?"

"Wonderful, full of love, bursting with pride, and maybe just a little scared. I don't want to ever let her down. But it feels right. I think in my heart, she has always been my Daughter."

"Darling, you've had Allie since she was four, and I don't know of a single instance in which you've let her down."

And as if reading his mind, she continued, "You didn't even let her down with all the drama over your Father. You were just protecting her, and rightfully so. You're never going to let her down, Nathan. It's simply not in your nature to do so. I think this just solidifies the two of you as a Family unit, moving forward. Allie already feels like Little Jack is her Brother, and she's going to make an amazing big Sister. We haven't discussed what you want my role to be with Allie, but I can tell you, I've loved her from the first moment I met her, skipping school and all." Elizabeth laughed at the memory.

"Allie has never really had a Mother, Elizabeth. She can't really remember Colleen, although she tries. In many ways, I think she already looks to you to fill that role. Is that something you would feel comfortable with?"

She had never seen his eyes so serious.

"Nathan, I've just been waiting for you to ask. I can't imagine being anything other than a Mother to Allie. You know, when we marry, the children become equal. There's more than enough love between us for Allie, Jack, and even more. But I will not have Allie feeling for one second that she is less than Little Jack, just because I carried him in my body. We will have to make her understand that our love for them both is exactly the same."

Elizabeth realized Nathan was slowing the sleigh to a stop. He put the reins in his left hand, then enveloped her with his right arm, and leaned his head against hers. She could feel this big brave Mountie next to her, softly start to cry. All she could do was cry with him.

When both their tears finally stopped, Elizabeth took his face in her hands.

"I don't even know what else you plan to share with me today, but I do know this. One of the huge reasons I love you, Nathan Alexander Grant, is that Allie was most important. That's what you told me first. I've known from the beginning, you will always put Allie, Little Jack, and me first, no matter what," and she placed her arms around his neck and kissed him passionately.

For a moment, they drowned in each other's fiery passion, both offering their kiss in a manner that left no doubt of their love for each other.

"It means the world to me, my Darling, that you would accept Allie as your own. And I know, it's going to mean the world to her, too! Elizabeth, her biological Father signed over his rights to me without even so much as an 'I love you' for her. Imagine, your Mother dies when you're four years of age and your Father doesn't even want you. Doesn't even write or ask about you, or send you a present on your Birthday. I've done my best, Elizabeth, but it breaks my heart that Allie has had to go through so much loss. It means the world to me for her to have a real family, a Father and a Mother, and of course a little Brother in Jack. I just want to fill her broken life with so much love, that she never feels the pain again of the love she's lost. If you can help me do that one thing, I will be indebted to you forever."

"I give you my word, Nathan, she will be our daughter and she will be as loved as any daughter anywhere. I promise you that."

They bent their heads together and just sat silently, with both of their hands in each others'.

Elizabeth felt him start to chill and placed one of her many blankets tenderly over his lap.

Finally, Nathan realized if they didn't get moving, Lee would be coming to look for them!

They glided forward in silence for a bit, but Elizabeth could tell, a huge weight had been lifted from Nathan's shoulders.

She suddenly realized, while she was trying to be a Mother and Father to Little Jack, Nathan had been trying to be a Father and Mother to Allie.

The difference was that Nathan had been doing it all these years alone, along with a very demanding job. In comparison, she had been doing it for such a very short time, with Bill, Lee, Rosemary, Laura, and so many others to help her.

No wonder he had broken down to know that finally, they would be doing it together as a real family, the way it was meant to be.

"Nathan Alexander Grant, you are going to be my Husband!"

"Elizabeth Rose Thornton, you are going to be my Wife!"

And they both knew, neither could wait!

They smiled and laughed together. Everything was so natural between the two of them. There was no shyness, no filtering, no holding back between them.

Finally, Nathan spoke seriously.

"Another thing I need to tell you is very good news too. Of course, not for Constable Crawford, but for those of us left behind. Unknown to me, Bill called in a huge favor and had the Mounties' top Forensics Team analyze the events that happened when Jenny shot her rifle. Bill drew everything out on paper to scale and gave them every detail he could think of, and apparently, they asked him for even more detail. I suspect you know, this is still hard for me to talk about, but I promised I'd let you know whatever I could share. It turns out that if I hadn't moved the rifle as much as I did, the Mountie would have still been shot and killed, but Bill would have also either taken the bullet too or at least the exploding shrapnel at close range, which they said would have most certainly also killed him."

"It's not your fault," she said flatly.

"No."

"But Nathan, what you did saved Bill's life."

He nodded but kept his eyes blankly fixed on the road ahead.

"There's more, I really don't want to tell you. But you said it's better for you to know. I had to know what would have happened, had I been able to move the rifle more in the direction I was pushing it. The Forensics Team said that would have been impossible, given the timing of the blast. But if it had been possible, Aaron and I would have taken the hit."

"But don't you see Nathan, the Forensics Team said that would have been impossible. That just tells me very clearly, God was protecting you, and Aaron. And because of you, Bill, who I love like a Father, was also saved."

"Elizabeth, I know we aren't supposed to question, but I can't help but wonder why young Constable Crawford was taken and not me?"

"I asked God that same question, 'Why Jack?' every single night after he died."

"Did you get an answer?"

"No, but I eventually stopped asking the question."

"What made you stop asking?"

"I realized months later that I had stopped asking...the day I met you."

He drew her closer and bent to kiss her forehead.

"Nathan, the way I see it, God used you to save Bill's life and protected you in the process. This may not make much sense to you, but I truly believe God is placing a shield of protection around you for whatever reasons. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. I don't believe God would bring us together for me to lose you, too, from tragic circumstances because you're a Mountie. Instead, I believe He is bringing us together to experience his many blessings, both as a Couple and as a Family. We just have to be open to receiving those blessings."

"Elizabeth, do you have any idea how much I love you? I've never had a partner before, yet in some crazy way, I know that's what we are! Life partners. Equal life partners."

"The feelings from me to you, my Darling, are exactly the same. So yes, I do know. But do you know how much I love you?"

"I'm beginning to figure it out," he whispered with that crooked grin.

"Okay, for the last part of that bit of news. Bill says the file is being added to my record, and..."

"And..." Elizabeth prompted softly.

"Well, I think this is Bill's fault, but there's apparently going to be a medal of some sort involved."

"Nathan, if you weren't looking so glum, I would say 'Congratulations, you deserve it,' but..."

"I'm sorry. I know most Mounties would be thrilled. But I've never cared for that sort of thing. It's just a job, and you do your best. I don't understand getting a medal for doing what you're supposed to do."

"Well, Jack was exceedingly proud of his medals, and I think, was always ready for the next one!"

"I'm terrible, aren't I?"

"No, just humble!"

"Well, we've covered one and two, so let's go onto the next one." prompted Nathan.

"There's more?"

"Yes, and I guess you'd say it was pretty big."

"Do I get hints?"

"Perhaps another medal?"

"The Packer Johnston case. I knew it!"

"Wow, you're good!"

"Well, I do have some experience with how these things work!"

"You know, Elizabeth, in an odd way, I'm very grateful for that experience. You certainly understand anything I've had to throw to you."

She smiled in understanding.

"Well, this last one came from Commissioner Harold G. Blake, himself. I think it was Tuesday evening, he called me personally to...well, you know. He's requested my presence after my two-week break is up, and he does say he is bestowing the Mounties' highest medal. But what I'm concerned about, is that medal usually comes with a promotion."

Elizabeth was quiet.

Finally, she was able to speak, "To Inspector. What will you do?"

"Refuse it, if it means leaving Hope Valley. I won't put you and Allie through that. But, I did promise to keep you informed. Just promise me, you won't worry. I give you my word. I am not leaving Hope Valley, now, or as far as I'm concerned, ever."

Nathan paused, then let out a little laugh, "I didn't know Bill and Commissioner Blake go way back. When Bill mentioned the other medal, I thought he was talking about this one. But then Bill made it clear that although he knew about this one, he didn't have anything to do with it. I know he was behind the other one, or at least, probably helped push it along. I told him we'll discuss it when I get back to work! He's sweating a little, which is exactly what I want!"

Elizabeth laughed, "You men!"

She scooted even closer, tucking her arm more tightly around his.

"Darling, I couldn't be more proud of you. What a tremendous honor, and whether you like it or not, it's very much deserved! You're not only a hero, you're my hero."

He leaned his head close to hers and hugged her tightly.

When they finally glided into Buxton, the bustling town looked a lot sleepier than usual, but after all, it was a Sunday.

They passed Lee's car, but no sign of Lee and Rosemary.

"The Livery handled the transaction for the sleigh, and it's just down this direction. Want to go there first, and then find Rosemary and Lee?"

But as soon as Nathan had spoken, they both heard Rosemary behind them, yelling for them to stop.

"Yoo-hoo, Elizabeth, Nathan! We're here behind you!"

"How did we miss you two?" Elizabeth called back to her.

"Oh, we just popped into that lovely French Bistro, where we had our Ladies Lunch. They're booked solid, but the Maitre D remembered me, and he said he would have his best table for us ready by half-past one. Will that give you enough time to get everything done you need to take care of?"

"Actually, that's perfect, Rosemary. That gives us more than enough time. Thanks for finding us a dinner spot! Sounds like you made quite an impression last Saturday!" complimented Nathan.

Rosemary beamed.

"Get used to it, Nathan, these women draw admirers wherever they go!"

"So noted, Lee!"

"Do you want us to go with you to the Livery?" asked Rosemary.

"You're more than welcome to! We thought we might look at some sleighs. If we're serious about using the cabin during the winter months, we really need one. Of course, it's Sunday, so we would just be glancing at what they have. That is if the Livery has any inventory! At least they'll know where we would have to go for one."

"What a marvelous idea! Our sleigh ride was the best, wasn't it, Lee?"

"Yes, Rosie, it was! Nathan, do you have any idea how much they cost?"

"Maybe twice the price of a good wagon, but that's just a guess."

"I vote, we all go! I might even go in with you! But you know, it wouldn't hurt to have a bigger one. Everyone went crazy over it, especially the kids," said Lee with a smile.

"Yes, especially the big 'kids!'" teased Rosemary.

"Personally, I like the smaller romantic one!" interjected Elizabeth.

"I think you're just partial to this one because we used it on our very first date," Nathan teased.

"And I would say you are 100% correct! And you win this..." and she gave him a kiss full of giggles.

Nathan just laughed and put his arm around her.

"Oh, Lee, can we put these blankets in your car?"

"Toss them here!"

"Great, Lee. I'll carry the rest."

The two men piled the blankets into the boot of Lee's car and turned back to the beautiful women waiting for them at the sleigh. Nathan jumped back in to take the reins from Elizabeth.

"Well, do you think you two Lovebirds can squeeze us all in?" asked Lee.

"I'm game!" Of course, Rosemary was always game for anything!"

Elizabeth scooted over even closer to Nathan until she was wedged under his arm, and Lee lifted Rosemary into the sleigh. She stood till Lee jumped in and got himself seated. Then he helped Rosemary to sit on his lap. It was snug, but somehow, they managed!

"Nathan, I like this. Maybe a smaller sleigh is better!"

"Told you so, Lee!" Elizabeth added cheerily.

"Well, I do like the coziness!" and Rosemary kissed her husband lovingly.

"Rosemary, you couldn't possibly make a trip to the cabin in this! Where in the world would you put all your bags?"

"Oh, Lee, I hadn't thought about that!"

Suddenly Rosemary was very serious, trying to contemplate where she actually would put everything!

"Well, speaking from experience, maybe we should!"

Elizabeth couldn't help but laugh. She was bad, but Rosemary was ten times worse!

"And," Lee continued, "Where would we put all the children we hope to have?"

That got Lee another kiss.

"Hey, this doesn't seem fair! I have to drive!"

Elizabeth squeezed Nathan's arm tighter and gave him an adoring look.

"Yes, but I have to drive home, so I'm making good use of my time here!" announced Lee.

"So, are you telling me, Lee, I need to sit up in the front seat with you and Rosemary on the way back?" teased Elizabeth.

"Not a chance, Love! Unless I'm up there too!" exclaimed Nathan.

"Oh, no! I guess I'll have to sit in the back!" sighed Elizabeth.

"Don't look so glum, Darling! There are worse fates, you know! Besides, I'll be a perfect gentleman. Well, sort of!"

With that, every single passenger in this crowded sleigh was laughing.

There was an easy coziness with the four, as though they had been couples together forever. And there was an excitement about what lay before them.

"Here, we are!"

Nathan brought the horses to a stop and was out of the sleigh in one sweeping motion. He reached for Elizabeth, grabbed her around the waist, and brought her down to him.

There they shared a kiss to help make up for the ones they had missed riding through town on the sleigh.

Lee did the same for Rosemary on the sleigh's other side.

The Livery was much bigger than Hope Valley's. It appeared to stretch on forever!

Nathan finally caught the eye of one of the few workers who were covering Sunday, and the guy's face lit up when he saw him.

"Constable Grant! How was the sleigh?"

"Hello, Jason! Wonderful, thank you! We really put it to good use. Almost hate to give it up! Let me introduce everyone, Jason Stine, this is Lee and Rosemary Coulter, and this is Elizabeth Thornton. Everyone, my good friend, Jason Stine."

"Pleased to meet you all! Welcome to our Livery!" And Jason motioned to his helper to take care of their horses. "What can I do for you?"

"Actually, we loved the sleigh so much, we were wondering if you keep any in stock. Or are they special ordered?" asked Nathan.

Jason laughed, "They're kind of magical, aren't they? You wouldn't believe how many we sell. People rent them, then come back to buy all the time! Some are special orders, but we do have an inventory out back if you want to take a peek. Here, follow me. Watch your step, Ladies. We try our best to keep everything tidy, but it's a continuous challenge!"

The walk was lengthy, but when they finally got to the back, they gasped. Did Jason ever have an inventory! There were sleighs everywhere, at least a dozen, and they were stunning!

"Lee, look at this one! It's perfect!"

"Rosemary, only you! That's obviously the Isotta-Fraschini of all sleighs! I don't think Nathan and I together could afford that!"

"Oh, Lee!" pouted Rosemary.

"What price range are we talking about, Jason? " asked Nathan.

"Oh, don't worry about that, Constable Grant. For you, we'll give you our cost. You've been a good friend to us these last couple of years and sent a lot of business our way. By the way, Congratulations on capturing Packer Johnston! And his entire gang! Just amazing! Thanks to you, the entire Regiment stopped off here!"

"Glad to help out, Jason!"

Lee understood right then and there that Nathan was the one to take care of this piece of business. And in typical Mountie fashion, looked like he wasn't even going to have to negotiate.

'You can't beat cost!' thought Lee.

While Nathan talked to Jason about prices, Lee and the ladies looked over the remaining sleighs more closely. The ladies were in agreement that the first one that caught Rosemary's eye stood head and shoulders among the rest.

Finally, Nathan called everyone back, to come with him, and to the ladies' delight, he headed toward the one they both wanted so desperately.

"Lee, Jason says this is his top model and the only one that can be modified. Do you mind going back over everything Jason, so everyone can hear what you just told me?"

"Of course, Constable! This is the only model that comes with an optional second seat. We can special order it and get it in by the end of the week, if not before. It's identical to the plush seating you see and is attached permanently right here. You won't even be able to tell it's an addition. Now, the second seat's space is a little tighter than the first, but it's perfect for the ladies and children. It also comes with built-in storage underneath, which is a big plus if you're traveling any distance with the sleigh. In fact, this way, you'll have double the storage space. And the thing my wife likes the best is that this half umbrella-like roofing helps keep out the wind and cold. She says it makes a huge difference when the sleigh is moving, and I have to agree with her. Do you have any questions?"

"No, it's a beauty. That's for sure!" Lee declared. "Ballpark price?"

Nathan handed him a scribbled note with the special price they were giving him. He quickly nodded to Nathan.

"Ladies, is this one still your preference, after looking at all the others?" asked Nathan.

"Yes, Nathan! Without a doubt, Rosemary chose the perfect one!"

"Well, Jason, I think we have a consensus!"

Rosemary let out a shriek of delight, and Nathan had never seen Elizabeth so excited, except for their first date, of course!

"Jason, can I call you first thing in the morning to actually make the sale and then pay you cash when we come to pick it up?"

"Of course, Constable. It's our pleasure, and it will be nice to get to see you again when you do pick it up. You're making a very wise choice. It's the best of the best, including those we special order. You won't be sorry. We'll be happy to service it for you too. We like to keep those blades nice and sharp. I'll include that in the price I'm giving you."

"Very much appreciated, Jason. One question: how difficult is it to train the horses?" asked Nathan.

"Usually can be done in a couple of days or so, but a week max. It just takes patience. If you need help, I can come to Hope Valley and help. But, I honestly don't think you'll need it, as good as you are with horses. They'll catch on fast."

"It's been a pleasure, Jason! I'll talk to you in the morning."

"The pleasure's all mine. So nice to meet you all! And Constable, great to see you looking so happy and relaxed."

Jason smiled and said something privately to Nathan, who shook his hand, said thank you, and gave him a wink.

Then Jason shook hands with Lee, "A pleasure, Mr. Coulter," and tipped his cap to the ladies.

The men were very pleased, and the women were elated. Together, they were going to be purchasing the most magnificent sleigh! This would ensure they could enjoy Nathan's new cabin year-round!

They began a leisurely walk back to the French Bistro, both couples arm in arm. Elizabeth and Rosemary were paying close attention to the window displays, many of which had changed in just a week's time, while Nathan and Lee were still discussing their good luck with what would soon be their joint purchase.

Suddenly, just before they reached their destination, Nathan stopped dead in his tracks in front of a store window.

"What is it, Darling?" asked Elizabeth, realizing he had stopped at the same shop where Allie had purchased his Birthday gift.

"Probably nothing that would interest you ladies, much, but it's only the most exquisite Leather Maker in the North Continent. See, George W. Lawrence, he's the Patriarch and owns this huge chain of shops supplied by their Portland manufacturing plant. They started out making Bridles and Saddles. They've added Holsters, Cartridge Belts, you name it. Their craftsmanship can't be matched by anyone."

"How do you know about them, Nathan?" asked Lee.

"Oh, they're legendary. The Mounties buy all their leather goods from them—everything from Saddles to Holsters to Belts to Satchels to Pouches, and more. In fact, most of our items are special order. We've been told the US Army also has custom pieces made by them. I have the luxury of being surrounded by their work every single day when I'm in uniform. But I've never bought anything personally. It's funny, about five years ago, or so, I passed by one of their shops and saw the most beautiful Woodworker's Pouch I had ever seen. I promised myself I'd go back and get it. And I did go back to inquire about it, but the price was exorbitant, and I was just more focused on what Allie needed at the time. I just...I just couldn't justify it. Last year, I checked in a different shop and was told they had discontinued it. I guess there wasn't enough demand for it, but boy, it was a beauty!"

Elizabeth and Rosemary were unusually quiet. In fact, Elizabeth looked almost like she could cry, and Rosemary was sniffling.

"Elizabeth, Rosemary this isn't sad. I'm just amazed that the shop's here! I know, without a doubt, it was not here last month when I came to Buxton. It's just a pleasant surprise, that's all!"

"But you gave up the piece you wanted for Allie!"

"No, no! It just seemed frivolous, and I just couldn't do it. I mean, I could have afforded it. It just wasn't my focus, Allie was. It's really nice to see one of their shops so close to Hope Valley, though. Lee, you should check your leather ledgers and see if they're made by Lawrence. If they are, someday, they'll be worth a fortune!"

"Well, Nathan, I thought I knew every uptown shop that existed, but I sure didn't know the history on this one. It's fascinating!" Rosemary was trying her best to sound upbeat. Both she and Elizabeth had been really interested in learning about the shop, but inside, they both were ready for a good old-fashioned 'Girls' Cry!' They couldn't believe Allie had stumbled on the perfect thing Nathan had wanted all these years.

It really was a miracle of sorts. But of course, they could never say anything and spoil Allie's surprise! Although this was going to be very hard for both of them, knowing the full story.

"Almost time for our reservation! And I'm starved! Ready to go?" asked Lee.

"Oh, Lee, you're always starved!" admonished Rosemary, but she said it with a smile and even reached over and gave him a kiss.

Nathan and Elizabeth smiled at each other, hoping that would be them in a few years.

Nathan took Elizabeth's hand, kissed it tenderly, and they locked their arms and hands together as they all joyfully headed toward the French Bistro.

The Maitre D met them at the front door and seemed so pleased to see the ladies again!

"Mes Belles Dames! Nous saluons le retour ~ My Beautiful Ladies welcome back! Messieurs! Gentlemen! Constable Grant, so wonderful to see you again! I have our best table, the one with the most privacy. Perfectly romantic for the two beautiful couples! Follow me!"

After they were seated, the Maitre D announced, "I will be happy to bring you menus, but our Special is divine. Nothing better, and that is Chateaubriand. It is a delectable French Steak served with a Red Wine Sauce. The accompanying first course is our very own version of French Onion Soup ~ there is none that compares! And our very best dessert today is a Blueberry Clafoutis. Does this sound good?"

"Absolutely, we'll all follow your lead and put ourselves in your capable hands! Everything sounds amazing!" Lee spoke for the entire table.

After he left to place their orders, Elizabeth turned to Nathan and asked incredulously, "Is there anyone in Buxton who doesn't know you?"

Modest as ever, "I think they remember the red Serge."

"Nathan, my Darling, you aren't wearing the red Serge."

Lee came to the rescue, "You all, thanks to Nathan, we are getting the most gorgeous sleigh! I mean, it's just stunning! I never thought I'd be as excited about something as my motorcycle, but this comes pretty close!"

"Speaking of which, that's something I'd love to try out! Have only ridden one a couple of times, but the freedom you feel with the wind at your back!"

"Oh, Nathan, there's nothing like it! Anytime you want to take it out for a spin, do so! I'll get you a key."

"Oh, Lee, that's not necessary!"

"Sure, it is! Given our work hours, the likelihood of both of us wanting to use it at the same time is probably nil!"

"That's so generous, Lee, but you would have to show me the ropes first!"

"Deal!"

"Wow, Nathan, you must really rate! Lee loves that motorcycle more than me!"

"Sweetheart! That's simply not true. Close, maybe. But, not more."

Everybody laughed, including Rosemary, who couldn't stop shaking her head!

The Maitre D, himself had decided to serve them, and out he came with their first course of French Onion Soup, piping hot from the oven.

"Bon Appetit!"

When he left, they all joined hands, and Lee led them in prayer.

"Dear Father, we thank You for this wonderful day of fun we've had with this beautiful, young couple who are just beginning on their journey. May they be as blessed as Rosie and I have been. We thank You for keeping us safe and providing this delicious food that is such a treat for us. We ask that You continue to guide us to always be in the center of Your will in everything we do. Amen!"

"Amen!"

"This is so much fun, just two couples who love each other!" announced Rosemary.

"That's beautiful, Rosemary, and yes, it is! It's been so much fun! We'll have to plan and make time to do this regularly!" And Elizabeth meant it.

"I have a question for the married couple. Do you ever get to a point you learn everything about each other or are you constantly being surprised?" asked Nathan earnestly.

Rosemary and Lee looked at each other, and both laughingly said together, "CONSTANTLY being surprised!"

"Somehow, that would have been my guess! You two are amazing together. Tell me how you fell in love!"

"Well, that's a long story! Rosemary better start, and I'll finish!"

"Actually, between us, I was engaged to Elizabeth's Jack. I could feel things slipping away, so I made the trip out to Hope Valley, determined to win him back. But Jack had already met Elizabeth, so of course, unknown to me, that wasn't going to work. Although I did give it my best try! How Elizabeth and I have ended up as best friends, after that fiasco, I'll never know! But then I met Lee, and for the first time ever, I knew what real love was!"

"Nathan, I took one look at Rosemary and knew she was the one I'd grow old with. Couldn't imagine my life without her! Still can't! Took a little work, and maybe even a little subterfuge, but I got the girl! I'll tell you the rest of that story later! That part's really long and probably better just between us men."

Rosemary cleared her throat loudly and gave her husband a look to kill.

"Uh, it's still a little prickly for Rosie and I think she's still a little mad at me over it, but it was necessary at the time, Darling! Believe me, Nathan, I would have done whatever it took to make her mine."

"You did do whatever it took! Including dating another woman! And I'll just leave it at that!" and everyone laughed along with Rosemary.

"Do you two know how beautiful that is? It's just so beautiful! Comical and beautiful. Can't wait to hear the details on the funny part of that story!"

The words coming from Nathan's mouth filled Elizabeth's heart with even more love for Nathan.

Unknowingly, she had fallen in love with a man who was a true romantic. It surprised her a bit, but mostly intrigued her!

"Oh, this soup is so delicious!" she said.

"French Onion is my favorite soup. I can make it, but it's not as good as this! Do you think we could get the recipe?" asked Nathan.

"Nathan, I'd say these two beautiful women we have with us could get just about anything they want from that Maitre D!"

Nathan laughed, "I'm sure you're right about that, Lee!"

Elizabeth and Rosemary giggled a bit but knew it was probably true.

As if on cue, the Maitre D was standing before them with a cart laden with Chateaubriand. This time he brought a waiter to clear their bowls of soup, so he could properly serve the main course.

"You will never taste a more delicious Chateaubriand!" he announced with pride.

He lifted the massive lid from the gleaming Sterling Silver Chafing Dish with an elegant flourish, and carefully set the Red Wine Steak Sauce aflame, right there at their table.

Everyone clapped with delight.

After each had started eating, they knew, without a doubt, the Maitre D had been right. Their entrée was delectable.

"This is insanely delicious!" sighed Elizabeth.

"I don't think I've had anything better!" agreed Rosemary.

All Lee could do was sigh, and Nathan just shook his head.

The Chateaubriand demanded their full culinary attention!

Finally, Lee asked, "When did you know, Nathan?"

"Easy to answer! That very first day when Elizabeth walked into my office. Her beauty took my breath away, but her strength just astounded me. I was a total goner."

"But what took you so long?" asked Lee.

"Well, I don't really know how to explain this, but I'll try. Basically, there were three things that held me back..."

"Lucas?" asked Rosemary.

"No, not at all. The first was that I was a Mountie, and having lost Jack, I just couldn't see putting Elizabeth through that lifestyle again. Second, there's a brotherhood among Mounties, and I think, I thought a part of me might be betraying Jack in some way. I know that may not make sense, but it was there, in my thoughts. And third, the most important one," and he was looking directly into Elizabeth's eyes, "I thought Elizabeth needed more time, I didn't feel she was ready for another relationship. And I wanted to give her as much time as she needed, without pressure. But given all that, I had fallen completely, totally, insanely in love with her. And the way I handled all that was definitely not my finest hour. But we made it through..."

Elizabeth reached up and kissed his concern away.

"Speaking of finest hours, I was positively horrible! From that very first day, I knew too, that Nathan was the one who would bring love back into my life. But Nathan's right, I wasn't ready. That's why I allowed my friendship with Lucas to continue. He was safe and never going to have my heart. So, in my mind, it was just a close friendship that protected me from having to face my true feelings for Nathan. I couldn't see it then, but boy, do I ever see it now. I'm so embarrassed. I can't believe I put Nathan through that!"

"Darling, don't ever think that. Everything we experienced has brought us together. Maybe you would have never been ready if the Lucas thing hadn't happened. I'll admit it was tough, it was a bit more than tough at times! And it wasn't about ego. At times, I was jealous, I'll admit that, but only because I thought I had lost you. I just couldn't see the two of you lasting long-term. I tried. At first, I was willing to just leave, but later, I was even ready to wait and pick up the pieces if I had to. I just couldn't stand the thought of seeing you hurt again. But now, none of that even exists. You and I, my Love, are beginning to create a love story that's going to be a classic, our very own masterpiece!"

He bent to kiss Elizabeth. After, they fell into one of their lengthy gazes, where only they existed for each other.

"Nathan, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have even blurted out his name!" frowned Rosemary.

"No, Rosemary, don't ever censor yourself around me. Lucas is a member of our community. We've made our peace. It's okay. I realize I'm the new person coming into this friendship. But I need to say this. Jack was Elizabeth's husband, but he also was a very close friend to you, Lee and Bill. As I told Elizabeth, her love for Jack doesn't make me love her less, it makes me love her more! Likewise, it would hurt me to think you might be uncomfortable mentioning a memory related to Jack or just talking about him in general. Jack still exists in Elizabeth and Little Jack, and he should exist in your hearts and minds too. It helps me when you talk about him and remember him. It helps me understand Jack better, and it helps me understand Elizabeth and Little Jack better. So please don't ever feel you need to be anything except yourselves around me."

"Nathan, you are one remarkable man, and I can tell you this. We knew Jack well and loved him well. But, Rosie and I both know and have actually talked about this. If Jack could choose a Husband for Elizabeth and a Father for Little Jack, it would be you. Without a doubt! You're one of us now. I guess you've gathered, we're a tribe of four! Welcome!"

"Here, here!" and everyone raised their glass in a toast to Nathan.

"I'm honored Lee, more than you know. I don't think I could be in better company!"

"Are the Beautiful Couples ready for Dessert?" the Maitre D asked in a booming voice.

He lifted the huge Sterling Silver cover from its matching tray on the cart, and with a fluid sweeping flourish, lit the Blueberry Clafoutis in their individual bowls, as though they were one! Everyone gasped. It was a stunning sight to see!

And then they were served.

The conversation took a lighter tone with lots of plans, laughter, and a more profound friendship being formed among the four of them.

And just as Lee said, the four of them were going to make one great tribe!
