Chapter 42: Hidden Truths, Found Truths

September 27th

Friday

Cloudy

Azura's dual-colored eyes watched Aurora from the other side of the room as she stood next to Ren with her eyes closed in silence, waiting for the girl to begin the exercise again, the sunsetting sun coloring the room in an orange light. He had suggested the very same exercise that he had done previously with his own aura, when he had walked from one side to the other to reach Summer, back when they were separated. Ren had agreed that it'd be a good way to gauge how progressed in her aura control she was, which would in turn help her semblance.

He glanced over to his bed on the right, where Ruby was quietly kicking her feet in the air on the edge of his bed, watching Aurora with her silver eyes. The girl had insisted on joining this time, saying that she'd like to get involved and see how things were going. And, if there was anything that Azura would never be able to do, it'd be saying no to Ruby. He blamed Summer for that.

Turning to look back at Ren and Aurora, he thought about what Ren had said this exercise helped with. He had said that it helped to show how much control one had with their own aura, which could help with certain semblances in a loose sense. Azura wasn't going to argue with the boy, since he really did have more knowledge in the topic of aura than him, so all he could do was trust that Ren knew what he was talking about. It did lead him to wonder if Aurora's semblance would aid her in the exercise, though.

With that in mind, he was letting Ren instruct Aurora as to what she was doing, easing her back into sensing the location of other auras around her. It had only been several days, but she was showing signs of good progress for someone who wasn't a student at Beacon. If nothing, she was at least good with her aura, which was more than enough for Azura.

"You just don't want her to be a fighter." Summer comments quietly, as to not surprise Azura.

"No, I don't. Not only is it very dangerous, but she's at an age where it'd be hard to pick it up. Training starts rather early for this life."

"You say that, but Jaune has been making leaps and bounds from when he started."

"Jaune at least had some level of basic combat in him, and now he has Pyrrha, one of Beacon's best trainers around. Well, student-wise, I feel. I'm sure Goodwitch knows a lot about combat that even Pyrrha doesn't know."

"True, to both of those things. Ah, pay attention now, she's starting." Summer said, quickly distracted by Aurora beginning to walk.

Azura rolled his eyes, having already been paying plenty of attention to Aurora. The girl was hesitant and slow in her steps, clearly having little confidence. They had cleared as much space as possible in the room, so no obstacles laid in her path unless she began to really deviate away from where Azura was. The only thing he had done to throw her off a little was pace back and forth for a few minutes before stopping in place where he was now. This spread his aura 'signature' around, so she would still have some difficulty in finding him.

He had confidence in her, though. Even if she didn't have any in herself.

The girl kept her slow pace, but continued to make progress in his general direction. Once she reached past the halfway mark, however, she stopped moving entirely as she frowned. She kept her eyes closed, but there was an uncertainty on her face that Azura recognized, though he kept in place waiting for her to decide for herself what to do. There was little else that could be done, even if Azura just wanted to give the reassurance she likely needed. Either she completed the exercise or failed it.

She gingerly steps forward again, reaching her hands in front of her and letting them rest in the open air. One step at a time, Azura watched her slowly bring herself slowly closer to his position. She was clearly struggling to find him, though he wondered if that was due to the exercise being too hard for her or because of her lacking confidence.

Once she was close enough to him, if a little off center, he decided that she had gotten close enough and touched her hands. She flinched away from it, not expecting the touch, but quickly tried to find them again. Azura obliged and moved his hands to grasp hers.

"You can open your eyes now, Aurora." Azura said, smiling as her pink eyes opened up to look at him.

"Did I do good?" She asked softly.

"You did good." Azura confirmed for her, looking over at Ruby.

Ruby's eyes light up with warmth. "You were great, Aurora."

Aurora does not smile, but a shade of red colors her pale face as she looks down to the ground. Azura let's go of her hands, moving to pull her close to his side with an arm around her shoulders, speaking to Ren.

"Success, I presume?"

"Yes, she was successful." Ren said, nodding as he walked closer. "Did you use your semblance at all, Aurora?"

The words were calmly spoken, trying to not give her the idea that it was like cheating.

"It was hard to...focus on where his emotions were." Aurora answers, nudging herself against Azura. "Too many people."

"But, there's only...oh…" Ruby said, cutting herself off as she realizes what the girl meant.

Azura takes note of her gaze fixating on him for a moment as Ren nods and speaks.

"Interesting." He looks up at Azura. "Any explanation for that?"

"It's probably mainly just how Summer and I show on her semblance now." Azura explains. "Ever since we uh...combined, Aurora has always struggled to tell the two of us apart. It doesn't help that Luna and Ruby were also so close to me. Probably assaulted her senses and made it harder for her to pinpoint my position at all."

Aurora looks up, as if confused with his own explanation, but Azura doesn't explain further as Ren thinks over the information.

"So, you think that her semblance being able to work as a tracker of sorts would have made this exercise easy for her?"

"Yes." Azura replies, looking down at Aurora. "But that doesn't mean you didn't do a good job."

Any trace of uncertainty was gone with his words, and Aurora nodded slowly in response.

Ruby walked up behind Aurora, placing her hands on the girl's shoulders. "He's right, Aurora. You should be proud of yourself for this. I know we're proud of you."

Azura gets on one knee, Ruby following after him, looking directly at the small snake Faunus. "You've been making good progress, Aurora. And we're all here for you. Me, Ruby, Ren...everyone on team Ruby and team Juniper, and Velvet too."

Aurora looks between her and Azura, eventually smiling as her pink eyes water. "Thank you...thank you so much, Ruby...Azura."

She tries her best to hug both Azura and Ruby, and Azura smiles as Ruby laughs and drags herself closer to Azura for Aurora's sake. Azura keeps one arm around Aurora and the other around Ruby as they all share in the moment. He could feel Summer's warm happiness and joy swell in his heart, and he lifted his gaze to look at Ren with an appreciative smile and warm eyes.

No words were needed between the two of them as Ren nodded back, this time with his own small smile. Azura did not get much time to see the smile on his face before he turned away, but it was more than enough for him.

He had a feeling that Ren enjoyed the help he gave Aurora more than he himself understood. As if, by helping her, he was somehow helping himself.

The ride up the elevator to Ozpin's office felt like the longest trip he had to ever take. Something about the message that summoned him to Ozpin's office this time felt different, like there was an air of mystery and secrecy about it. He decided to not tell anyone that he was even here for that specific reason, unless he wished to answer a dozen questions per minute. Nora alone would have shook him until he vibrated.

Team RWBY was in their dorm with Aurora when he left, thankfully. All he had to do was excuse himself for a walk and team JNPR were okay with him leaving. Only thing that went wrong for him was that Pyra had shot him a questioning glance, like she had sensed some ulterior motive behind his words of simply wanting to take a walk. Azura had just given her his best reassuring smile and left a moment later.

He absently flipped the switchblade between his fingers, wondering what exactly had come over Pyra recently. He honestly felt bad for being unable to provide a private conversation with her, since she clearly needed one.

"You should talk to her...you know you want to."

Summer's words rang in his ears despite her mental whisper. Luna floated in front of him, tilting her head with concern in her yellow eyes as her singular white tail flicked to and fro.

"I know. The question is always 'when should I' when it comes to talking to people you know need it. Whether it be for comfort and support...or because you know they need to know things that they don't."

The feeling of Summer's guilt settling in his stomach stirred his own guilt of his words. He had not intended to be so sharp-tongued to her.

"Yes...I know it all too well." She says softly. "Even for you."

Azura breathes out a shaky sigh, feeling some reassurance from Luna as his mother places her hands upon his shoulder and back.

"I'm sorry...you're allowed to speak when you feel the time is right or you are comfortable enough to do so."

"And you have as much right to know about what I am not sharing."

Azura wanted to respond, tell her that it was entirely up to her, and then to move on and try to continue on his issue with trying to have a moment of privacy between him and Pyra. Unfortunately, and almost ironically, time was once again not on his side as the elevator dinged and began to open.

The sight and sounds that he was greeted with was more than enough of a surprise. The slam of a fist hitting against wood was heard as he saw Ironwood point an angry finger at Ozpin.

"We cannot afford to rely on baseless optimism, this is exactly what caused that night in th-"

"James!" Goodwitch hissed, her voice smooth as butter and as sharp as a steak knife.

Ironwood, supposedly named James, froze in place as he stared at the woman.

"Welcome, Azura." Ozpin said, coughing into his hand to fill the awkward silence. "I...do apologize for what you had to come in on. Please, come in."

Azura walked in slowly, each step feeling heavy as he tried not to let the feeling of not belonging in this conversation set in. The only things that gave him confidence were Luna, who confidently strode by his side with a hand on his shoulder, and Summer's feeling of support sweeping through his heavy limbs. It empowered him to at least enter the room and stop several feet within, the elevators door sliding shut and leaving him in the room with the two academy headmasters and deputy headmistress.

Ironwood had stood up straight, surprise found in his normally rigid face, his sharp features tightening as he looked Azura up and down for several moments before turning to Ozpin.

"What is the meaning of this?"

"It is exactly what you think it is, James." The grey-haired man responded.

"Mister Heart is one of us now." Goodwitch said after him, adjusting her glasses. "Has been for a little while."

Ironwood breathes in deeply before pinching his nose and exhaling heavily. He turns to face Azura again, looking him over just as when he first met the boy. Azura remained where he was, trying to look as calm and in control as he could.

"Oz, I know you and I do not see eye to eye on everything…" Ironwood begins, rubbing his chin with a gloved hand. "But don't you think this is a tad too much?"

"Azura is a perfectly capable young man, and I trust him enough to let him come here, in the middle of a meeting." Ozpin answers, forming a triangle with his fingers as he looks at Ironwood over his glasses. "And beyond that, he would have found out sooner or later."

"Due to his difficult circumstance, I'm sure you could see why Ozpin chose to do this." Goodwitch spoke after Ozpin, her tone holding hints of a sternness that implied Ironwood better get used to it.

The man sighs, moving to stand to the right of Ozpin's desk, with Goodwitch on the left. "And yet, it feels as wrong as it should."

Azura licked his lips, feeling a tension grow in the air as Summer's presence swung in full force.

"Azura." Ozpin says, breaking the tension. "Please, come closer. There is an introduction of sorts to do before we can discuss the real reason we are here."

The boy follows the instruction, stepping forward and towards the side of the room with Glynda. He looks between all of them before settling on Ozpin, then speaks of his own free will.

"An introduction?"

"Yes, an introduction." Ozpin said, smiling. "You have already met all three of us, but I wished to once again welcome you into the Inner Circle. The least I can do in that regard is tell you who is within it." He leans back slightly, waving an arm to himself. "I head the group and plan our every move, and you already know me as Headmaster Ozpin. Unofficially, I am only just Ozpin to you now."

His hand shifts to Goodwitch. "Glynda is my right hand woman and closest friend. A remarkable mind and always ready to remind us of the smaller picture before us." He gestures to Ironwood. "And this here is James Ironwood, General of the Atlesian military and Headmaster of Atlas Academy. We have a long history and I would trust him with my life."

"Liar." Summer said in barely a whisper in Azura's mind, still loaded with enough animosity to make him physically flinch as Luna turned to look at him with concern.

"Azura, is everything alright?" Ozpin asked, his eyes barely narrowing.

Azura blinks, nodding his head. "Ah, yes. Please, continue."

"Well, if that is the case, then I do believe Ironwood would like to say something before I speak for the rest."

Ironwood simply nods, turning to face Azura. "I wished to apologize for my actions following the CCT being broken into. I had not meant harm to Miss Rose or to strike her as the culprit, nor did I intend to impose such a crime on you, either. I would apologize to her myself, but I simply have not had the time to do so."

Azura analyzed the man to the best of his ability, deciding to shift Summer's emotions circulating in his heart away to find that he felt the man was sincere.

"Thank you. I'll be sure to tell Ruby what you said. It'd mean a lot coming from someone like you." Azura answered, smiling as he always did when accepting apologies.

Ozpin chuckles. "I am glad that you two were at least able to put that to rest once and for all. Now, who would be next?" He pauses to think it over, then talks again. "The headmasters of Haven and Shade academy, Leonardo and Theodore respectively, also know everything within the Inner Circle. Xanthe, Theodore's right hand woman"

"All four of the academies are in on this?" Azura asked with surprise, having not heard of any of this info from Summer.

"Yes, all of them. But that is not all, there are a small handful outside of that." Ozpin replies, chuckling again. "The final two should be...names you at least recognize or understand their importance. The first is Winter Schnee, Ironwood's right hand woman, or nearly so, and from the SDC."

"From the Schnee family? Does We-"

"Weiss does not know." Ironwood answered for Ozpin.

Azura breathed out, instantly relieved. "That's...that's good."

"You care for your friends. A great quality to have, Azura." Ozpin said, a rather serious look overcoming his face. "And speaking of friends, the last name is something that Summer knows...and has possibly shared with you already."

"Qrow…" Azura breathed out, Summer's voice thick within his own. "It's Qrow."

Ozpin breathes out. "Yes, it is Qrow Branwen. The only remaining one from...a team long past."

"Team Stark…" Summer murmured. "I knew Tai was out...Raven left long before. Qrow...I'm sorry."

Azura looks down, letting Summer have her moment as he takes in all of the names of people that he had either only heard mention of or have never even met, trying his best to remember them.

He looks back up again, his mouth firm and straight. "And what is the important part of the meeting? Now that introductions are out of the way."

"Always getting right down to it, aren't you?" Ozpin asks, smirking.

"A good trait for one so young." Ironwood adds, his hard eyes looking Ozpin down. "I assume that there was more than just you introducing us to him, Ozpin?"

"Yes, of course." Ozpin responded, not letting the topic drag on. "The data from the scroll of one Doctor Merlot has provided us with evidence of not just the experimented Grimm, but also of where their location is. We have young Azura here to thank for finding it."

"And for killing whatever that mutated Grimm was." Azura interjected. "Though team Coffee gets the credit for that."

"Yes, that. Do not worry about that, they knew full well what the creature was capable of." Ozpin nods as he speaks, waving a hand aimlessly as his elbow rests on the desk. "Which, speaking of such Grimm, the scroll has actually given us a location to something that Merlot had clearly kept as top secret as possible."

"A place to experiment on the Grimm?" Ironwood suggested aloud, deep in thought.

"Yes, exactly that. An island not too far from Mountain Glenn, where the ocean meets further down the mountain range." Ozpin answered. "Such a place would be dangerous, if left alone. It would not be very good if the Grimm were to evolve to cross the ocean. We all know that they would, they are rather devious."

"So we destroy it." Ironwood said. "I can send in a few fleets and wrap it up before it becomes a major issue."

"No, that would draw too much attention. Cause too much of a stir of confusion and fear." The grey-haired man said with a sigh. "Considering team Coffee's expertise in land control, I've already decided to have them take this mission on. Despite their experience, however, they will not be alone. Two professional Huntsmen will be with them for the mission."

Azura frowned. "But, who knows what kind of mutated Grimm are on that island?"

"Peace, Azura. They are fully capable of handling such creatures, I assure you." Ozpin answered, raising an open palm to the boy. "I have not told them of their next assignment just yet, simply to give them reprieve from their last mission. We do not know how long this one will take, either, so they could very well take it easy and stay safe once they go."

Azura sighed, but was unable to argue it further than that. Whether or not he liked it, the headmaster had a point.

"You called all of us here simply to tell us that you have everything covered, Oz?" Ironwood asked. "There's something else that you aren't telling us."

"Yes...there is one more thing that I wished to bring up while all of us were here." The man admitted. "Something that both Glynda and I knew, but wished to tell both you, James, and Azura."

Azura glanced at Ironwood, who was simply rubbing his chin with a clear interest in Ozpin's words.

"And what would that be?"

"The breach of Vale...it was not just Roman Torchwick and the White Fang who caused it." He said, answering Ironwood. "We have some evidence to believe that a third party was involved."

Azura raised an eyebrow to feign confusion, having already known that a third party was involved.

"Someone involved with our black queen."

His fake confusion quickly turned to genuine surprise. "Someone...involved with…?"

"Yes, Azura. Is there something wrong with this information?"

Azura shook his head. "Er, no...no, nothing wrong. I was just not expecting it. Do we know who? Or why, even?"

"No, we do not. We do not even know what entailed such a relationship, but we do know that it is tied to that woman that Glynda had to fight off back in that incident that brought Miss Rose to Beacon."

"Must've missed that detail." Azura muttered under his breath.

"Now, with all of this said and done, I want to ask you a question, Azura." Ozpin said, a curious look within his brown eyes.

"I certainly wouldn't know anything you don't, but what's the question?"

"Just an idea of sorts, to gather a consensus from you." Ozpin answers. "That night in the CCT, you said there were two women there. Do you remember how they looked similar, despite how little you could see of them?"

"I do, yes. They both had black hair, just about the same exact height, and seemed to be experienced in close combat. Good enough to put me and Ruby on the defensive. Why?"

"I'm just curious to see if...you had recognized the fighting styles at all."

Azura's eyebrows furrowed with a level of confusion before shaking his head. "No, I don't think I did. Do you think I would?"

Ozpin pauses, relaxing in his chair slightly. "I had asked Miss Rose the same question just barely a few days ago after I was approached by security of the CCT. They provided footage of the fight between you two and the women, and I felt like the style was familiar. With no face, though, I could not say for sure."

"Hm...I apologize for not being able to tell you anything of use, then. I don't think I recognized the fighting style beyond her being able to fight with a spear."

"That is plenty alright, Azura." Ozpin replies, chuckling. "One last thing, though. And I suggest listening to it."

Azura tilts his head slightly, nodding to show his attention was on the man.

"Come to my office tomorrow after dinner hours end, please. I had planned to run a test for your semblance in regards to Summer, but more pressing issues had come up before the meeting."

Azura nods again. "Of course. May I…?"

"Yes, you may. Glynda can escort you out, James and I need to discuss the Amity festival."

Azura looks at the blonde woman, who simply nudged her head to gesture for him to leave with her. He followed her into the elevator, then the two waited for the doors to close. The elevator jerks slightly before smoothly going down, leaving them in an awkward silence. Azura really did feel out of place, but he hoped he had left a good enough impression.

"Relax, Azura. I know the three of us have a level of experience you lack, but you are not any less of a member of the Inner Circle." Glynda says, placing a hand on his shoulder as her normally stoic expression relaxes.

With Luna watching him in the background with a gentle gaze, Azura relaxed as he released a tension in his shoulders that he didn't realize was there.

"If you need anything regarding this, you can come to me." She says to him, her expression holding a touch of concern.

It was the most emotion he had seen on the woman since he first saw her.

"Er, right." Azura eventually said, coming to his senses. "Thank you, Professor Goodwitch."

"Still in the habit of titles, I see. A respectful person, through and through."

"Only half the time." Azura says offhandedly with a sheepish grin.

"Better than some students here." Glynda says as the elevator stops and its doors open once more, letting her hand drop and expression go stoic again. "Now go, I'm sure you would like to return to your dorm."

Azura steps out of the elevator and turns to face her again. "Thanks for the help, Professor."

Goodwitch nods. "Of course."

He watches the elevator doors close again as she pushes the button to go up, then turns to leave the building. As he exits out to the cool air breezing through his hair, Azura checks his personal scroll to find several notifications.

The only one to give him pause was the number and signature lack of greeting of a recent message telling him to meet them at an old warehouse on the far side of the waterfront. The message under it asked for a certain jacket.

"Neo." Summer mutters. "With the worst timing."

"A cruel mistress, asking me to come out this late. And for things I can't safely get without risk of being caught."

Azura sighs, trying to think of what he could do. A moment later, he sighs again.

Looks like he needed to ask for a favor.

Seeing the Beacon garage essentially empty was eerie to Azura, but he remained leaning against Bumblebee as he waited for Blake to arrive. She had seen his messages asking for Neo's coat and the keys to Bumblebee, and knowing her, she was likely to help him in this case.

He heard footsteps about a minute later, snapping his head up as he recognized two pairs of feet. Looking at the main hall where they were likely to be coming from, he couldn't help but cringe inwardly as he saw not only Blake, but also the absolute last person he wanted to see at this moment.

"Hi, Azura…" Blake says with a wince and an awkward smile. "I, uh, brought Ruby."

"Well, that's not good."

"No shit that's not good."

Azura breathes out. "Is that why she currently has both jacket and keys in hand?"

"She looks upset." Summer comments.

"She looks angry." Azura retorts mentally.

"Something like that." Blake answers, looking at the shorter girl. "Well, you wanted to ask some questions."

Ruby walks past Blake to make her way to Azura, narrowing her eyes as she tries to look intimidating in front of the taller boy.

"I can't even begin to explain how it took so long to recognize the jacket, but...but, are you insane?"

Azura remained silent, not willing to trust himself to not crack a joke in this moment.

"I was dead tired and mentally exhausted that night, but I couldn't just let it go that Aurora had the jacket of the girl who tried to kill you any longer! I saw Blake sneaking around with it and confronted her, and now I want an answer." Ruby continued, the emotional charge of a teen driving her.

Azura's mind was going at a million miles per hour to try and figure out an answer for her that wouldn't be a full lie, gaining the help of Summer as she whispered an answer to him.

"I was just as surprised as you to find that out, Ruby. I just didn't mention it because I thought it wasn't important. I didn't even know that she'd be around Aurora, you can ask Yang about that."

Which was true, given that he knew that Neo had little intention of harming those close to him, given their relationship right now. It was also true that he had no clue that Neo would even help him outside of it having benefits for her.

"You'd think it would be important enough to mention, Azura. A girl who has actually nearly killed you doing this...even I can tell that can't lead to good things." Ruby says in a short rant. "And you and Blake are meeting her again?!"

Azura nearly smiled as he saw the true reason for Ruby being upset with him, concern for a friend dripping in her every word, but decided against it.

"Ruby, take a deep breath, okay?" Azura asks, waiting for her to do that and visibly relax to speak again. "There is a rather long story to be told here, starting all the way back to the docks way back then. I promise that I will tell it to you tomorrow...if you give me the jacket and keys. And don't tell Yang that me and Blake technically stole her bike."

The girl frowns, seeming to not be convinced just yet. Blake steps forward to speak again, trying her hand at convincing.

"And we'll both be really safe. Someone has to keep an eye on Azura and we both have our weapons." She said. "We need to do this, it's important."

Ruby sighs, the fire she had going out as she seems to realize she doesn't even have her own weapon on her. She remains silent for a few moments before holding the jacket and keys out towards them, her silver eyes staring Azura down.

"I want actual answers tomorrow, Azura." She says firmly, though her charade of confidence wavers midway through. "Please."

As Blake takes the jacket, Azura steps forward to clasp his hands around Ruby's hand, feeling the keys to Bumblebee brush his palm. He looks down at her with a smile.

"I promise, Ruby. You'll get to ask me any question on your mind, anything. Even about Summer and I."

Ruby nods slowly, a worried smile on her face. "Be careful." She looks between Azura and Blake. "Promise me you'll be careful."

"We promise, Ruby." Blake said, an actual smile coming to her face to reassure her. "You should get back, though. The others might have noticed the commotion and now missing occupants in the room."

Ruby gives them one last look, seeming like she wanted to say something before turning to walk away with aggravation clear in her body, obviously feeling stressed. The two Faunus watch her go as Azura waves for Luna to follow her for a few moments once she turns the corner.

Azura sighed, looking at Blake. "Well, that went well, didn't it?"

"Well enough, but I think tomorrow will not be a fun day for you. For me, either." Blake answers, moving her black hair out of her face.

"She's going to tell Yang and Weiss. Probably team Juniper, too."

"No, I don't think so." Blake said, shaking her head in disagreement. "Ruby is upset and concerned, but she's already given you the benefit of the doubt. She believes that there's a reason for this."

"You think so?"

"I do. Ruby holds you in a high regard, like all of her friends. The idea of us working with someone like Neo might not look good in her eyes, but she would rather hear us out than assume."

"Blake has a point, Azura." Summer comments softly. "Look, you need to get going."

Azura nods, spinning the keys in his hand as he turns to sit on Bumblebee. "We need to get going, so we can hopefully return before it gets too late."

"Right." Blake said, quickly moving to seat herself behind Azura and wrap her arms around his waist, Neo's jacket pressing against his stomach. "Don't worry about Ruby right now, we have something important that requires our attention."

Azura nods, smiling at the roar of Bumblebee coming to life. Blake was right, his attention was needed elsewhere at the moment. He'd worry about his teamwork with Neo being revealed to Ruby after.

Blake's warm body and the wind whipping through his hair was the only consolation on the drive to Vale.

Well, this was bound to happen. Perhaps a bit earlier than I put it, but that's my own fault. Keeping track of several pieces of writing can cause issues, but I do keep a close eye on things for GVLP itself, so I do apologize for this mishap.

Have a good day/evening!
