This is a continuation of the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson. It picks up where the epilogue ends.
Nia was not sure that leaving the kingdom to find this well was Kalmar's best idea. But, well, Arundelle was still going to be there. It would be a short trip. And the dragons had already started flying.
Maker only knows what Father would say now, she thought with amusement, wiping some tears from her eyes.
"Are you okay, Mama?" asked Leeli with concern.
"Of course, dear," Nia replied, "Just . . . some memories." Artham swooped around in the air around her. She smiled and looked up at him. I hope this works.
It seemed like an eternity later that Kalmar called out, "We're going to land. We'll go the rest of the way on foot."
The dragons landed. Nia watched as Leeli's dragon gently nudged her. She wished she knew what the dragon was saying.
They walked a ways, Kalmar in the lead. It felt surreal to Nia, the fact that they were even doing this. "Come on," Kalmar said quietly.
And there it was. The first well.
It was beautiful. Sunlight shone down, making it sparkle, but Nia felt it would be just as beautiful in the night, with stars shining down.
They all stared at it for a long moment, almost forgetting their purpose.
"Leeli," Kalmar said quietly. "Untie Janner and bring him here."
Leeli slowly did as he commanded. Kalmar held him for a moment, looking down at him, and then laid him beside the pool.
Nia turned away slowly, leaving the king to do his work, and shed a tear.
All was quiet, until Leeli screamed.
"JANNER!"
Tears were in her eyes, in the eyes of all of them, but Nia didn't know if it was a good or bad thing. She turned back around to see Janner's eyes open. Nia felt such a great surge of joy and a great surge of sorrow together, rushing at her, and she started to cry. Janner was alive, but . . . she felt her kids looking at her, and Artham put his hand on her shoulder.
"I know," he said. "If we still had Esben's body, we could have saved him too. But it would be too late. King Kalmar's been accepted already. Anniera has given up on King Esben. But they'll still remember, always, and so will we."
Nia turned to look her brother-in-law in the eyes. "I know," she said, and looked back at her son. Oskar was helping him up, and Sara was standing by him, offering words of encouragement.
"Come on, Mama!" Leeli said, running toward the dragons. "Let's take him back to Anniera!"
Nia followed her daughter, and at the sight of her son, the Throne Warden, back to life again, found she was able to smile.
So there it is. I hope you like it. I'm new at Fanfiction, so reviews would be greatly appreciated.
