CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
The early morning sun streaked through the windows at the Grant, Coulter, and Thornton Households. Everyone was up early, dressed, and eating breakfast at their respective homes.
It was a cold day, to be sure, and the night had brought even more snow.
The adults knew the special surprise this day was to bring, but the children just thought it was a day trip, one they were very excited about taking!
"Allie Bean, I think you'd better go back upstairs and change your sweater to that extra heavy one Grandma knitted for you. It's gotten very cold, and we plan to be out most of the day. The matching hat, scarf, and mittens are down here in the corner cabinet. I'll lay them out for you."
"Frederic, I think we better layer one more sweater...there…perfect. Darling, we're going to go on the train and get you new clothes today! Lee, do you have an extra scarf Frederic can use?"
"Little Jack, my love, if you wiggle any more, we're going to have to stay home! You do want to see Allie and Frederic, don't you?" "Na'tan?" "Yes. Na'tan too!"
A half-hour later, all three households piled into Lee's car to ride to the Train Depot. Lee had gotten tickets for everyone the day before, so there would be no chance of disappointment. Allie was the only one of the three children who had ever ridden the train before, and she was describing everything about it to the boys, who were already beyond excited!
Elizabeth and especially Rosemary, being the new Mother, had bundled their little boys up so warmly, they looked like miniature mummies! But they were definitely protected against the cold!
The parents held their respective child's hand while the train pulled into the station. Well, Elizabeth held Allie's hand, while Nathan held Little Jack up high so he could see everything and stay safe!
When the train drew near, and the children heard the whistle, their excitement was boundless!
Frederic's eyes just got bigger and bigger as the train drew closer and closer, and Little Jack started clapping his little hands together.
The Conductor reached his arm out and enthusiastically waved to the children, who just as enthusiastically waved back. Lee needn't have worried, as the three families were the only ones catching the train out of Hope Valley today, which made it all the more exciting to all three children!
"Look, it's like our own private train!" exclaimed Allie.
"Papa, who is that man?"
"Frederic, that man is the Conductor of the train. He runs everything that goes on inside the train."
"Papa, can I be a 'ductor when I grow up?"
"If that's what you want to be, Son, then absolutely that's what you'll be. But you might want to wait till you see our mill and the construction crew. You might just want to run the place! Let's find our seats!"
"Dad, can I sit with the boys here?" Allie had chosen the seating smack in the middle of the train with two cushioned bench seats across from each other. There was a table between to spread out the books and toys Elizabeth had brought.
Nathan glanced at Elizabeth and Rosemary, who both smiled and nodded their agreement.
"That's perfect, Allie. Here, you and Frederic watch Little Jack closely," and he lifted Jack down to Allie.
Elizabeth set her bag of books and toys down on the table where the children were sitting.
The adults moved to the matching booth area on the other side, so they could still keep a very close eye on the children just across the aisle.
The children immediately busied themselves looking out the window as soon the train pulled out of the station.
"How did your first night go?" asked Nathan.
"He had a bad dream around 2 am and ended up in bed with us for the rest of the night," Lee whispered to Nathan. "I hope that doesn't make us terrible parents!"
"Of course, not Lee! Allie had nightmares for quite some time after Colleen died. I can't tell you how many times I had to do the same thing. Sometimes, they just need to feel that you're there with them. You did the right thing!" Nathan whispered back. "Everything's new to Frederic right now. Just give him time. He'll adjust. But, I will say, nightmares come and go. Sometimes they come when you least expect them. So be prepared for that!"
"It's funny, you say that. I've noticed the same thing with Little Jack. We can have a perfect day, and voila, a nightmare will rear its ugly head! Then we can have a not so perfect day, and he'll sleep like a charm!" chimed in Elizabeth.
"So, basically, you're telling me there's no rhyme or reason?" queried Rosemary.
"Yes, my sweet Friend. That's basically parenting in a nutshell!"
Nathan nodded in agreement.
"I don't know if that's encouraging or terrifying!" mused Rosemary.
"Well, I know! I think it's terrifying!" interjected Lee.
Nathan and Elizabeth looked at each other and, at the same time, said, "Welcome to Parenthood!"
Rosemary and Lee laughed and took each other's hands.
"Rosie, are you doing okay with the train? I mean the movement?"
"Oh, Lee..."
And Lee knew he had said precisely what he shouldn't have said!
Rosemary was turning an awful shade of green.
"Here, Rosemary! Let's go to the Ladies Room..." and Elizabeth took Rosemary by the arm.
"Is Auntie Rosie alright, Uncle Lee?" inquired a concerned Allie.
Since Lee was a bit rattled, Nathan answered for him, "She's going to be fine, Allie. I think she just needs to freshen up. Are you all doing okay?"
All three of the children smiled back at him, looking like they were having the time of their lives!
They had spread out all the toys, papers, and pencils, and all three were studiously drawing, albeit at three different levels of expertise! It was quite charming to see.
"Nathan, I'm not sure I'm cut out to go through a pregnancy!"
Lee did look a little green around the gills, too!
"Lee, I think it's a little too late to back out now! But you've got this. You can do this. Now, I know I don't have any personal experience with what you're going through as the Father since my only experience was with Colleen. But Lee, you're made to be a Father. Frederic and this new Baby will have the most wonderful Father, and you are going to make it through! You're dealing with a lot right now. It's normal to be a little scared."
"But, Nathan, every time I open my mouth, I say the wrong thing, and poor Rosie just gets sicker and sicker. Just like now!"
"Lee, I think that's going to pass soon if you can just hang in there. Maybe don't talk to Rosemary about the things that are making her sick right now, like foods and motion. Maybe just don't say anything and just be there for her. Why don't you talk to Elizabeth about it? She knows first-hand what Rosemary needs."
"Not a bad idea. It's just so hard to see Rosie sick, Nathan. I'll try to get some pointers from Elizabeth."
"Can you believe the snow. It's perfect for the surprise, but I'm still a little concerned about the temperature dropping any further. Although, these poor children are bundled up like plump little snowmen! Not to change the subject, but Lee, do you honestly think I'll be able to drive alone to the Mountie Ball?"
"Nathan, I hope you're not alone when you go to the Mountie Ball!" and Lee let out a huge chuckle.
"Lee, you know what I mean..."
"Sorry, couldn't resist! But, honestly, I have no doubt. My only concern is this crazy weather. You may end up having to take the sleigh, but no, Nathan, that won't work. Union City's too far away. What will you do if the roads are impassable."
"Well, that would only leave the train, which we may have to do. But I was hoping to drive Elizabeth there. Excuse me, Lee…"
Nathan had noticed an enormous frown across Jack's face.
"What's wrong, Jack?"
"His pencil broke, and I can't find another one," explained Allie.
"Just a second, Allie, I'll check with the Conductor. Jack, you hold on. We'll see if we can't get that fixed!"
Nathan went to the head of the passenger car and tapped on the door for the Conductor who had stepped momentarily into the lead car. He smiled, delighted to be needed, and grabbed a box of pencils from a shelf to the side of him, for Nathan to divvy up with the children.
Nathan went back to Jack, stooping down beside him to check his broken pencil, and then replace it with the brand new one. You would have thought Nathan had handed Jack the most magnificent toy in the world. Jack's frown immediately turned into a huge grin, and he reached to give Nathan a big sloppy kiss.
"Frederic, would you like a new one, too?"
"Yes, please, Uncle Nathan!"
"Here you go. Be sure to draw me something really special! Allie, here's the box for you to keep in case this happens again. And Allie, you're doing a great job with the Boys!"
"Thanks, Dad."
Nathan winked and returned to his seat across from Lee.
"See, Nathan, I didn't even notice anything was wrong. And you're so good with them! How am I ever going to be a real Dad?"
"Lee, I've had six years of experience. You've had less than twenty-four hours. Plus, I'm sitting in a spot where I can see. You can't possibly see from where you are. You've got to stop with these unrealistic expectations!"
"You're right, Nathan. I just want everything to be so perfect."
"Well, that's never going to happen. At least it hasn't for me. I make mistakes every day. Still do. We all do. Here's my advice: relax, enjoy, and avert any crisis that comes up WHEN it comes up. Don't borrow trouble, Lee. You're off work, and it's your day to enjoy the children and pick up our huge purchase!"
"You're right, Nathan, and I have a son with a baby on the way! Who would have thought? Just think, last week when we looked at the different sleighs, I had no idea I'd be a Father by the time we picked it up! No wonder I feel a bit overwhelmed!"
"Yes, exactly, and what would you tell your men at work to do if they felt the same way?"
"I'd tell them to focus and deal with the present."
"Excellent advice, my Friend! Now take your own advice!"
Lee laughed and started to relax.
"You know, Nathan, I've been thinking. Those houses we're talking about need to be built sooner than later! Do you think we can ride out in the next few weeks to look for lumber on the new land?"
"Sure, Lee. When are you thinking of starting to build?"
"As soon as winter's behind us. I mean," and Lee lowered his voice to a whisper, "If we're looking at a Wedding in June, we need to have your house ready, too!"
"Do you think that's even possible, Lee?"
"With me putting a rush on it, consider it done!"
"Lee, you're something else! A pretty great man to have in your corner!"
"You and Elizabeth need to get some plans together for that cabin as well. At least I can get started on that without raising any questions from the townspeople!"
The two turned to see Elizabeth and a much less green Rosemary enter the passenger car from the back.
The Ladies sat down with their partners, and for a few precious minutes, all was well, but the Conductor came by with fresh scones and little glass bottles of milk for the children, with a choice of coffee or tea for the adults.
Whether it was the enticing smell of the scones or the whiff of strong coffee, Rosemary was up in two seconds, headed very rapidly back to the Ladies Room. Elizabeth gave the men a 'so sorry' look and quickly followed Rosemary.
"Papa is Mama alright?" asked an anxious-looking Frederic.
"Yes, Darling. Mama just has a bit of a tummy ache. She'll be fine in just a few minutes," and Lee wished he was as sure about that as he sounded.
"See, Lee, your Son is fine now, thanks to you!"
Lee gave Nathan a grateful glance, but couldn't bring himself to eat his scone.
The women were back a lot quicker this time, but the men had already cleared both tables of food and drink, which was very much appreciated by Elizabeth.
"Next stop, Buxton!" called the Conductor as he passed through once again to check on everyone. "If you're coming back through on the return trip this afternoon, I'd be happy to keep the children's things in a locker for you."
"That would be wonderful. Thank you so much," replied a very grateful Elizabeth.
Buxton looked like a picture from a Christmas card. Every single store was decked out in their Holiday finest, and there was a beautifully decorated tree in their Town Square.
The adults couldn't remember the town ever looking so much like Christmas.
Snow was everywhere except where the Boardwalk had been cleared. Drifts of snow glistened and edged the transition from street to walk.
Everything was bustling, as it was the Saturday before December 1st. People were dressed in their Holiday finest and bustling from shop to shop, trying to get an early start on their holiday shopping.
The town looked so beautiful, Nathan and Lee decided it would be best to pick up the 'surprise' first and take a tour with everyone on the 'surprise' prior to breaking up for shopping. It would be their first Holiday Tour together, as well as their first use of the sleigh together.
If the truth be told, the men were just as excited to actually see their new purchase, as were the women.
All of them couldn't wait to see the children's reactions!
"Children, want to go see a great big surprise?" asked Nathan.
Eyes got big, and out came the shrieks of delight that could be heard all down the street.
"Everyone hold hands. Allie, I've got Jack, and you hold on to Frederic, okay. Just be extremely careful, Sweetheart. Don't cross any streets without us."
"Yes, Dad!"
"Frederic, hold on tight to your cousin Allie," cautioned Lee.
"Yes, Papa!"
Allie and Frederic skipped along, totally excited.
The couples followed beaming, thrilled to see their excitement, knowing that it would literally explode in a few minutes! Both couples also took Nathan's instruction quite literally, as the adults were lovingly holding hands as well!
"Look, that's where we had our Ladies Lunch!"
"It sure was, Allie!" agreed Elizabeth.
"You know, that has got to be one of my favorite restaurants! We'll come back, Allie, for another Ladies' Day!" promised Rosemary.
When they came upon the George W. Lawrence Leather Shoppe, Allie couldn't resist looking back at the Ladies with a smile, which they returned warmly. Given what they had learned from Nathan on their last trip to Buxton, they were as excited as Allie to see Nathan receive his most special gift. But they would all have to be patient. His June Birthday was seven months away!
After walking some more and oohing and aahing at all the beautiful window displays, the lively group finally came to the Livery.
"Dad, why are we coming here?" asked a curious Allie.
"Just you wait, Sweetheart. Lee, why don't you come with me to talk to Jason?" Nathan winked, and Lee was quick to follow. "Ladies, will you be alright waiting just inside, so it won't be so cold?"
They nodded and gathered the children.
Lee was absolutely incredulous when Jason took them out back and showed them the sleigh. It was more beautiful than either he or Nathan could have imagined! Even Jason was impressed.
"You know that's the most beautiful sleigh we've sold. You all are going to enjoy it for years to come! And we're going to help you take care of it, so we're sure you do just that. I'm even excited about revealing the sleigh to the Ladies!"
"Oh, they're not going to believe it!" exclaimed Lee. "Nathan, it's positively fabulous! I'm speechless."
"We definitely ordered the right one, Lee. This sleigh is extraordinary."
"I told you, almost as good as my motorbike!"
"Oh, Jason, before we unveil the sleigh for everyone, could I get your opinion on a possible gift? I know we won't be able to figure this out by Christmas, but I would like to make it happen as soon as possible. By warmer weather, for sure. I think my daughter's ready for a horse. She's here, so you can tell her size. And she's partial to Palomino's, but I don't think she's absolutely set on one. It's going to be a surprise, of course, but do you think you could keep your eye out for something that would be suitable for her? Obviously, I'm concerned that the horse is gentle and well trained, but knowing Allie, it needs to be a very loving horse, too."
"Of course, happy to do it! We have a lot of horses coming through here. I'll keep my eye out for something exceptional. And Nathan, you were right to call me about getting the horses for you to take the sleigh home. These boys are very used to pulling a sleigh. And their matched beauties, too. Now, don't feel like you have to buy them, but they are trained and work very well together. So, if you want to go that route, they're definitely a good option. How do you all want to show this beautiful sleigh here to everyone?" asked Jason.
Nathan and Lee marveled at just how beautiful the horses were, to say nothing of the sleigh.
"Nathan, they're already trained. That's a real plus!"
"Yes, it is Lee. Jason, can we think about purchasing them, until we see what our boarding options are?"
"Oh sure, take your time. As long as I know something by Christmas, we're fine."
"Jason, here's the cash paid in full at our agreed-upon price," Nathan handed a thick envelope to him. Jason reached in his pocket and pulled out the receipt he had already made and handed it to Nathan in return, and then the three Gentlemen smiled and shook hands on their deal.
"Lee, why don't you drive, so you and Rosemary can sit up front with Frederic and Allie?"
"I'm sure not going to say no to that! Thanks, Nathan. Appreciate that very much. Frederic's going to love it!"
And Lee jumped in to take the reins, with Nathan getting in beside him. Jason hopped up on the back seat so that he could also be a part of the excitement. It was the best part of his job!
As they drove the sleigh around to Elizabeth, Rosemary, and the children, it would be hard to say who was the most excited. Elizabeth and Rosemary both had open mouths, and all three of the children were shrieking.
"It's simply stunning!" noted Elizabeth.
"It's more beautiful than I imagined," exclaimed Rosemary.
"We get to ride in this beautiful sleigh?" asked Allie.
Nathan jumped out along with Jason, "Yes, Allie, you do. But even better than that, Uncle Lee, Auntie Rosie and Mrs. Thornton and I have a surprise for you! The sleigh is ours, Allie, to take home and keep! And it's Frederic's, and it's Little Jack's too!"
Allie was so happy that she started crying. Frederic just kept asking, "It's mine? It's mine?" And Little Jack was jumping up and down with joy!
"Yes, my Darling, the sleigh belongs to all of us, and that includes you!" and Rosemary knelt to envelope Frederic in hugs and kisses. Then he started crying along with Allie.
"But, I've never…ridden…in a sleigh!" Frederic choked out between gasps.
"Well, we're going to fix that right now. Jump in, Son!" and Nathan lifted Frederic to his Papa, who got a great big hug from his Son.
Nathan then picked up Allie and gave her a huge kiss, then lifted her into the sleigh. He helped Rosemary in next, then Elizabeth, then Little Jack.
"Jason, you've made seven people extremely happy today! We can't thank you enough for making all this happen," and the two men hugged each other.
"Don't be a stranger and call if you need anything. A pleasure to do business with you, Constable!"
And with that, Nathan jumped into the back seat of the sleigh with Elizabeth and Little Jack, and they were off. Jason had pulled the umbrella roof open, and it truly did help protect them against the chill. The adults were shocked at what a real difference it made. And all of them knew they had without any doubt made the right choice.
Elizabeth and Little Jack loved that the back seat sat up so much higher. The view was perfect.
"This is the best surprise ever!" Allie proclaimed. And Frederic was furiously nodding his head up and down in agreement!
With the snow on the ground and the Holiday Boughs, Garlands, Wreaths, and Ribbons everywhere, Christmas was most certainly in the air.
Nathan couldn't resist breaking out in song.
"Okay, everyone, it's a 'two-horse open sleigh' instead of a 'one-horse open sleigh,' and it's 'a sleighing song today' instead of 'a sleighing song tonight.' Here we go! Sing out!" Everyone on the sleigh happily sang with gusto, and everyone quickly joined in, even the happy bystanders on Buxton's Boardwalk! Allie and Frederic were smiling and waving to everyone as they sang. And the townspeople of Buxton were waving back at them, with faces full of Holiday Cheer!
VERSE I:
Dashing through the snow
In a 'two' horse open sleigh
Over the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song 'today!'
CHORUS:
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh! What fun it is to ride
In a 'two' horse open sleigh, hey
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh! What fun it is to ride
In a 'two' horse open sleigh
VERSE II:
Now the ground is white
Go it while your young
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song
Just get a bobtailed bay
Two forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! You'll take the lead.
CHORUS:
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a 'two' horse open sleigh, hey
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a 'two' horse open sleigh
FINALE:
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a 'two' horse open sleigh…(8*)
It was as though all of Buxton had joined in singing with them. All except for the second verse, Nathan seemed to be the only one who knew the words to that one, so basically, he had to sing solo there! But his clear, rich voice rang out beautifully from the sleigh!
Also, most of the Buxton citizens were filled with an instantaneous urge to go purchase a sleigh! And without doubt, thanks to the Grants, Thorntons, and Coulters, sales most certainly increased at the Buxton Livery!
It took three times to sing the song and cover most of Buxton's decorated town. And though no one wanted to stop riding the sleigh or singing, the Ladies had much shopping to do. Mostly for Frederic, but also some for Christmas.
Elizabeth and Rosemary took Allie and Frederic with them, while Lee and Nathan took Little Jack with them.
"Lee, would you mind to do one quick errand with me?"
"Of course not, Nathan. Where to?"
They walked a bit, till Nathan led Lee into a tiny little Jewelers Shoppe, that looked itself like a little Jewel Box.
"Constable Grant, so good to see you. You'll be happy to know your package arrived yesterday. And it's absolutely stunning. Would you like to see it now, or do you prefer to look around the shop first?"
"Jefferson, this is my good Friend Lee Coulter. Lee, this is Jefferson Lauder, the Jeweler, and Owner, of the Shoppe."
The three men exchanged firm handshakes.
"Jefferson, if you don't mind, I'd love to see the piece now. I've been so excited for it to actually come in!"
"Of course, Constable. I have it locked in the back. Please excuse me for a moment."
"You know, Nathan, this isn't a bad idea at all. I'd love to find something for Rosie to mark the adoption and pregnancy."
"Great idea, Lee. They say you can never go wrong with jewelry, and I, for one, hope they're right!"
"Constable, please take a seat," and Jefferson moved his overhead jeweler's lamp to shine directly on the package he was opening.
"Wow!" exclaimed Lee, who couldn't resist looking over Nathan's shoulder.
"It's perfect. Thank you, Jefferson." And the piece really was perfect. More so than Nathan had imagined.
"You are most welcome, and for some unknown reason, the order was filled at a lower cost than we expected. Why exactly, I'll never know for sure, as the piece is simply exquisite. But I do think it was a matching piece to the earrings you purchased, and somehow this got left out of the original shipment to me, so they were left with part of a set. Of course, I'm passing those savings on to you. Let me give you the final tally."
Jefferson did some figuring and then handed a slip to Nathan.
"Jefferson, are you sure? This amount is significantly lower than the price we discussed."
"I'm sure, Constable. Only for you! Let me wrap it for you and get a bag. Feel free to look at anything while you wait, and I'll be happy to get out whatever you wish to look at closer when I finish wrapping."
As Jefferson went to the back to complete his task, Lee looked over the displays and found himself overwhelmed with choices.
"You know, I just don't know what Rosie would want. There are so many beautiful choices. How did you find this place?"
"The earrings were in the window, and they totally drew me in. They just looked like Elizabeth, even though I'd never seen her wear that color before."
"Well, help me find something that looks like Rosie. Please! You obviously have good taste!"
Little Jack was getting restless, so Nathan sat him down to stretch his legs a bit. The little toddler ran twice around the shop, considered a third round, but then came straight back for his "Na'tan."
"That's a good boy, Jack. Now, we have to help your Uncle Lee choose something for Auntie Rosie…"
Both Lee and Nathan saw them at the same time and nodded their heads to each other. They were oval ruby earrings trimmed in gold, and they screamed Rosemary. And there was a matching necklace that was just as beautiful.
Elizabeth's package that Jefferson had just wrapped was as beautiful as the package for the earrings Nathan had already given her. Jefferson had even made the two packages to match somewhat, as the items in both did.
"Jefferson, can you show me these Ruby earrings and also the matching necklace?" requested Lee.
"Excellent choice, Sir. My pleasure," he then went on to explain the carat weight of both items to Lee. "And I'll give you an excellent price, as you are a friend of our favorite Constable."
And Jefferson was true to his word. Lee was very pleased and gave him a quick yes. "Can you wrap the two items, but separately?"
"Of course, Sir. My pleasure."
With their business complete at the Jewelry Shoppe, Nathan wrapped Little Jack back up in his cap, mittens, and scarf. Then the trio headed down the street to a book store, where Nathan selected several books for Allie and Little Jack, and Lee did the same for Frederic with Nathan's help. Nathan also picked up a leather bookmark and a few decorative erasers for Allie's Advent trinkets.
Elizabeth, Rosemary, Allie, and Frederic had spent most of their time purchasing clothing essentials for Frederic. He literally needed everything, from underwear, to shirts and pants, to socks and shoes, to sweaters and coats, and even pajamas, robe, and slippers!
Needless to say, by the time Rosemary had finished gathering all her purchases, Frederic was going to be the best dressed little boy Hope Valley had ever seen. Elizabeth had to keep reminding her that Frederic needed play clothes, too, and to choose comfort over style, at least for play. Also, a few things, Elizabeth simply had to veto, or poor little Frederic would have been made fun of by all the other little boys and girls, as they were just a bit too stylish. Elizabeth had learned from all her teaching years that standing out and blending in for children was a very fine line. Thankfully, Rosemary finally took her advice.
It had all been overwhelming for little Frederic, as he had never even seen that many clothes in his life, much less had them to wear!
"Can you please box all these up for my Son, and have them ready for us to pick up in a couple of hours?" asked Rosemary, and the Sales Clerk was happy to oblige.
Elizabeth couldn't help but notice how jubilant Rosemary was when she spoke the words "my Son!" And it warmed her heart.
"Frederic, I think it's time we go find you some toys. What do you say?"
"Yes, please, Mama!" and Allie simply grabbed his hand and headed in the direction of the toy store she had been in before.
Elizabeth and Rosemary happily followed.
After a couple of blocks walking, Frederic's eyes looked like they were ready to pop out of his head. The Toy Store was overflowing with bright and colorful toys spilling out from their window displays.
Rosemary sadly realized she wasn't even sure if Frederic had ever been in a Toy Store.
Elizabeth was shocked by what Rosemary said when she bent down to Frederic, "Darling, Santa will be coming soon, so today, we'll have to just pick out a few things we want to take home with us and save the rest for him to bring."
"Yes, Mama. Can we go inside?"
"Of course, Son!"
Elizabeth was so proud of Rosemary. She could have easily bought the store out, as Lee wouldn't have said a word, and truthfully having waited so long for a child, she probably deserved to do so. But instead, she had done the right thing by lowering expectations of her Son, and teaching him there were choices he would have to make.
Elizabeth saw a stuffed doll that immediately caught her eye. It was a Mountie, all made in fabric, but with a removable Red Serge, Leather Pieces, and Campaign Hat. She knew her Son would love it, and she decided to push back any of her maternal reservations and do what was right by her Son. The Mountie doll was meant to be Little Jack's. He would enjoy it for hours upon hours.
Elizabeth glanced up to make sure Allie was occupied. She then moved quickly over to the Arts and Craft Section, where there was a separate clerk. So she wouldn't be caught, she went directly to the Clerk and spoke softly.
"Could you possibly pull together a few Sketchbooks and a Paint Set that I can purchase, but without letting my Daughter see it." Elizabeth shocked herself. She had said "my Daughter," without even thinking, but truthfully, Allie was very close to being just that. She was solidly in Elizabeth's heart, and she was there to stay. And the formality was just a technicality.
"Also, do you have any wooden Easels?"
"Yes, Ma'am! The large one here comes packaged in a box, and it is the nicest we have. The legs are collapsible, and it can be used on the floor or on top of a desk."
"That's perfect." The Clerk also gathered a collection of Sketchbooks and hid them behind her counter. "As for the Paint Sets, we have Oils and Watercolors. And of course, we have Colored Sketching Pencils."
"Do you have the Oils and Watercolors in one set?"
"Yes, Ma'am. That's also our best set. The Colored Sketching Pencils are included with that set. If you'd like, I'll give you a couple of our Artist's Aprons to go with it."
"Perfect! I'll take those as well. If you can box everything up for me, including this Mountie, I'd appreciate it very much. And while you do that, I'll check to see how my Friend's doing."
"Frederic, I think that may be just a bit too big to fit in your room. How about this one? It's a perfect size."
"I love it, Mama!"
Rosemary had collected some wooden toys, including blocks, cars, and figures. Frederic had also selected a couple of stuffed animals, some coloring books and crayons, and, not surprisingly, some metal toy cars just like his Papa's.
But Frederic kept going back to a toy train, as though he were magnetically pulled to the spot. And he was utterly mesmerized gazing at this new marvel.
Rosemary whispered to the Clerk to find her the most massive train they had, and make sure that it was all boxed up without her Son seeing it.
The Clerk was more than happy to oblige.
"Allie, was there anything you needed?" asked Elizabeth.
"Oh, no, Ma'am. Thank you, but I'm just helping Frederic."
"But Sweetheart, you've been a huge help. Are you sure you wouldn't like to choose some little something to take home to remember the day by?"
Allie thought a moment, "I think I just want to get one thing. But it's not for me."
And she reached up to whisper to Elizabeth.
All Allie wanted was a book on trains she had seen Frederic look through with widened eyes.
"Perfect, Allie. You occupy Frederic, and I'll slip it to the Clerk for us to purchase. That's a lovely thing for you to think of, Sweetheart."
Allie just smiled, happy that Frederic would be getting his surprise book.
Elizabeth also picked up a couple of books she knew Allie would love and hid them under Frederic's book on trains. She also held them directly in front of her so that Allie couldn't see.
After Elizabeth paid for the books, they left their purchases being boxed and wrapped to go find the men and Little Jack.
But they didn't have to wait long! The Gentlemen had just come out the door of the Bookstore, and they were headed straight toward the Ladies.
Allie and Frederic ran to their Dad and Papa. Nathan grabbed Allie in a bear hug with his free arm and reached to kiss her on the top of her head, and Lee picked up Frederic and smothered him with hugs and kisses.
Elizabeth and Rosemary watched with joy and pride in their hearts. They also instantly noticed the men were carrying packages, which immediately piqued their interest! And curiosity! But the men were giving nothing away, except a kiss each to the women they loved.
"Who's hungry?"
"Lee, you're always hungry! I should be okay to eat now, so I say yes," answered Rosemary, although a bit cautiously.
The festive group walked on down to a casual restaurant called Caleb's Cafe, where Nathan had eaten before and highly recommended.
"They serve everything from Breakfast to Lunch to Dinner and in between! It's down-home cooking, and you won't be disappointed!"
"Sold, lead the way, my man!"
The walk wasn't far, and the windows they passed were so beautiful and full of Holiday Spirit that nobody minded the cold.
Inside, they found two tables side by side, which delighted Allie to be able to have the boys to herself to take care of, especially at their very own table.
The two couples were just happy to get the chance to sit down together, and hands immediately connected.
'Did you have any trouble with Little Jack?"
"Not a bit!" declared Nathan, and Lee quickly vouched for him.
"Barely knew he was there!" added Lee. "I think your little boy's growing up."
"Lee, now you're going to know exactly how that feels when I say that to you about Frederic!"
"Uh-oh! Walked right into that one, didn't I? Hey, cut me some slack, I'm new at this parenting thing!"
"Well, that excuse is only going to last about a week, in my book," she teased.
The children only wanted to eat Sandwiches with Potato Fries, but their Mothers insisted they also have some hot Soup to warm them up before they went back out in the cold to catch the train. It was much too cold for the children to ride all the way back to Hope Valley in their new sleigh.
The men would have to brave the cold and bring their new sleigh home with them by themselves! That is after they picked up the myriad of boxes that were waiting for them at the Department and Toy Stores!
The men ordered the Meatloaf Special with all the trimmings, and the women decided to stick with lighter fare, just Soup and Sandwiches. They also ordered Coffee and Hot Tea to warm the adults and medium Hot Cocoa with Whipped Cream to warm the children.
Elizabeth was already wondering how she could stand being apart from Nathan for that long, so she just nestled into him for good measure.
Rosemary still wasn't feeling great, but she was at least going to attempt to eat a little.
Looking at her, Lee made an executive decision. And though the Cafe may not have been the most romantic setting, it was a warm one, and he was going to make it romantic!
"Rosie, you have made me the happiest man alive these last two days. And if you've ever deserved a 'just because' present, it's now. Sweetheart, I adore you, and I want you to know that beyond a shadow of a doubt, every single time you glance at these. I love you to the moon and back, Rosie, always."
And Lee picked up the two packages he had lain on the chair beside him and placed them in Rosemary's eager hands.
When she opened the velvet box that contained the ruby necklace, Lee simply said, "For our Family."
Rosemary gasped. Ruby was her favorite stone and her birthstone.
"Lee…" and she kissed her husband lovingly right there in the middle of the Café.
"There's more, Rosie," and Lee handed her the separate package. She unwrapped it slowly but stopped to look at Lee before she opened the velvet box.
"Open it, Sweetheart."
She slowly lifted the velvet lid back and shrieked loud enough for the entire Café to have heard, if not the entire block it was sitting on.
"Mama?" Frederic wanted to make sure she was alright.
"Yes, Darling, your Mama is fine. In fact, your Mama's perfect, Frederic! Lee, they are stunning!"
"One for each of our children, Rosie," he whispered in her ear, and Rosemary started to softly cry.
"Oh, Rosemary, they're absolutely stunning and they will look beautiful on you!" smiled Elizabeth.
"Happy tears, Frederic. Auntie Rosie is just crying, happy tears," explained Allie.
Little Frederic looked puzzled, but he trusted his new cousin, and if Allie said they were happy tears, they were happy tears!
Nathan had been right about the food, it was simple, down-home cooking, and everything was insanely delicious. Even the sandwiches were covered in some incredible sauce, but neither of the women could discern the ingredients.
Lee bought two bags of cookies to go, one for the Ladies and the Children, the other for the sleigh ride back home! He insisted on paying for everyone, and then they all piled into the sleigh for one last ride together and headed to the Train Station.
There were sweet kisses with the Children, and then long kisses between the couples at the Train Station. Nathan helped Elizabeth board with Allie and Little Jack, while Lee helped Rosemary with Frederic.
But when Nathan exited the passenger car after Lee, Elizabeth came running to him from the doorway.
He was looking straight into her face with no height disadvantage as she stood on the steps, and he pressed his lips to hers with a fierceness she hadn't known before. He reached to touch her beautiful face and breathed in deeply. And she returned his kiss with hunger.
But the whistle blew, and the Conductor came to make sure she was safe, drawing the gate and making sure it was firmly attached. Instead of requesting that she leave, he simply stood by to steady her, allowing her to stand there, looking after and waving to the man she loved!
Nathan stood there watching and waving back to her until the train was a distant figure, almost like Frederic's soon to be toy train set. It was as though every time the couple parted, even for the shortest period of time, they took a piece of each other with them.
Oh, how he loved her!
