The sky over Venice Beach begins to die down on another sunny day. The Shore Shack co-owners are ready to close for the night inside the empty establishment. Raymundo is at the front, counting the money carefully, while Tito cleans off the grill at his usual pace. From the clear streets, one boy approaches the shack's counter. Raymundo perks up and greets him.
"Twister! How are ya? Just closing up shop. Did ya need something?"
Twister looks up to Raymundo eagerly as he sits.
"Is it too late to get a burger?"
Tito, still working on the grill, speaks up.
"No problem, lil cuz'!"
Raymundo hands Twister a water and steps back from the counter and speaks to Tito.
"I'm gonna head home and get everything ready, Tito."
"Sounds good, brutha."
As Raymundo walks out, Tito continues grilling the burger. Twister fidgets with the water bottle and looks off towards the ocean, then back towards the grill. Tito notices his frantic eye movement and speaks up, as the oven surface continues heating up.
"How ya feeling, lil cuz'?"
Twister looks towards Tito with an uncertain expression.
"I'm not sure. Are you excited for your trip?"
Tito looks back towards the nearly complete burger as he responds.
"It's a little overwhelming. Heading to the heart of the big city. Tournament's gonna be a big crowd."
Twister sighs in a disappointing manner.
"I wish I could go."
Tito gets the burger on its bun perfectly as he continues.
"Only could afford one extra person to go. Even for competitors, those tickets are expensive. Besides, you have family visiting."
Twister gives a clear face of displeasure.
"You mean my Aunt? She's here for a day. I...I just feel bad. Otto wants to go so bad, so does Reggie…man none of us get to go with him. He's gotta go without any of us."
Tito hands Twister his burger.
"He'll be okay, lil cuz'. But I think there's more on your mind than that."
Twister looks up in surprise.
"How did you know?"
Tito stands confidently.
"I've known you guys for how long? Think I would know a little about what's going on in your heads."
Twister looks at his burger for a bit before taking a big bite, slowly chewing and finally responding once he's done.
"I know we talked about this before but…"
Twister struggles to get the words out of his mouth. They become like lead in the back of his throat. Tito moves around the bar and sits on the stool next to him.
"It's okay, lil cuz'."
Twister sighs, takes another bite, and continues.
"I have something I've been keeping hidden. It's something I feel really deeply about, but I'm worried it's going to ruin a really important friendship I have. I don't know what to do."
Tito sits up attentive as he responds.
"So there are feelings for another one, and you're unsure if things will work out. Is this because of what happened to you and Anna?"
Twister nods his head as he speaks with another piece of burger still in the process of chewing.
"A little. It's not Anna, though. I'm just...I'm scared. I know how much it hurt her and I don't want to be hurt like that. But I also get really happy when I'm...well I want the world to know how happy I am when I'm.. I just...I don't know how without making everything awkward."
Tito ponders for a bit. He rationalizes his thoughts on Twister's dilemma. While Twister keeps chewing, Tito finallys speaks.
"Lil' cuz, let me give you some advice. Fly the Kite. It must not fly you. Be in control of whatever is on your mind and follow your heart."
Twister looks up to Tito and smiles. For the first time in what seems like forever, Twister understands Tito's words. Sitting back and thinking becomes too much...fast. He knows what his heart thinks. Even through the butterflies and uncertainty. There needs to be a plan in his mind. Still, it all starts to come together in his young brain.
"Thanks, Tito. It might take some figuring out, but I'm ready to rock."
Twister eats the last bit of his burger quickly and finishes his drink as he speaks again.
"Oh yeah, we're supposed to see Rick before he leaves. Gotta go. Good luck tomorrow Tito!"
Twister quickly jumps off the stool and heads out on his skateboard. As he leaves, Tito waves to the young boy and finishes re-cleaning the grill as he whispers to himself.
"Oh, lil' cuz. To the best of your world shining above ya."
Tito goes into humming a song as he finishes his work…
Otto, Anna, Harmony and Rick stand near the pier laughing and talking about the upcoming trip. That time tomorrow, Rick would be heading towards the city, in order to participate in the National Skate Championships. While the kids took a lot of trips, the heart of LA was shockingly not a place they had been before. The shores outside the chaos was more their comfort zone. Still, Tito would be taking Rick to compete for the weekend. A young boy's voice stands out.
"You ready to win it, Rick?"
Rick looks at Otto, hands in his pockets, quite nervous about his friend's confidence.
"I don't know, man. I just hope I don't get last. I'll let Tito do the shopping for you guys."
Harmony laughs looking at Otto.
"You really had to ask if he could get you a Tony Hawk shirt?"
Otto looks over to Harmony with a sarcastic smirk in his still confident demeanor.
"Says the girl that asked him to grab her candy."
Harmony gives a stare down to Otto as she sternly speaks.
"First off, it's not just any candy. It's chocolate. I'm sorry I have a sweet tooth."
Anna chirps in soon after Harmony.
"I just want something shiny. Can't a girl dream of new earrings?"
Rick looks over towards Anna with a sarcastic grin.
"Not sure that one is going to be easy on Tito's budget."
The kids share a good laugh as they look back towards the water. Seconds begin to pass as they look towards the sea. For each, the quiet rest from everything feels necessary. They each take turns quietly looking towards each other. However, one remembers something and turns away from the water as he speaks.
"Wait. Wasn't I supposed to help Ray with something before everyone comes over?"
Rick looks up and comes to the realization of Otto's words.
"Shit. Yeah head on over. We'll be there in a while."
Otto looks over to Harmony and Anna as he begins to walk away.
"See ya guys."
Otto takes out his board and turns the walk into another ride down the pier. This truly is the comfort zone for him. Even after all the failures. After all the stress and thoughts about what to do and how to do it. This is where he found his home. The feel of the wheels moving on the sidewalk. Grinding slowly even over the bumps the town has yet to patch up. The breeze passing his face. It becomes an escape from the world that has become so confusing to him. He wants to close his eyes and forget it all. But he can hear his name through the silence.
"Otto! Otto man! Hey!"
Otto stops his board and looks to see who it is calling him. Right in front of him runs the young boy he is least prepared for. The words barely leave his lips as he tries to take it all in.
"Twist?"
Twister runs up to him, out of breath from trying to catch him. Twister takes a few exasperating breaths before finally getting the words out.
"Otto...Where ya going? Aren't we supposed to be hanging out right now?"
Otto stares at him lost in what to say or how to act. Even with all the conversations to himself, he lacks preparation. The absence of words fills with Twister's voice soon after.
"Remember? Rick's leaving tomorrow."
Otto can feel his brain snap back into reality, noticing Twister is not asking about the question he fears the most. He calms himself quickly and responds.
"Oh yeah. Harm and Anna are with him at the Pier. We promised Ray to help with some stuff so I'm going to do that real quick. Catch ya later."
Otto quickly gets back on his board and rides off as fast as he can. Twister just softly waves to Otto, standing there in confusion for a few seconds. He shakes it off and heads towards the Pier. Looking at the sky, Twister begins to think to himself about the view. Something about it seems different tonight. The blue seems brighter. The later stages of dawn make everything around a mix between the chaos of the tourism and the peacefulness of the world at its current state. The crowd looks to be decent size. Not too much, but not too quiet. The scene feels like a perfect balance to a boy starting to figure things out. Just as he engulfs himself in the world, he hears a voice.
"Twist!"
Twister quickly glances over to the voice of Rick approaching him.
"Hey Rick! Where is everyone?"
Rick looks up towards the sky as he answers Twister.
"Well Otto went to help his pops. Anna went to get Reg and Sam from his place. And Harm went to find Jorge for the hangout tonight."
Twister gives Rick a big smile as he speaks.
"Going to be fun to be together again...well...before your trip."
Rick looks over to Twist with a small smirk as they walk towards the pier. They both lean on it and watch the water. Rick looks at the sky for a bit before responding.
"Yeah. It's going to be crazy."
The boys talk for about a half an hour about the tournament. How crazy Los Angeles is and what Rick was thinking to use for the tournament. Rick sarcastically brings up his lack of plans.
"My moves are kinda lame.."
Twister shakes his head for a bit before responding.
"Nah. You got something special to show off. I know it."
Rick thinks to himself for a second.
"Maybe."
Rick loses himself in thought. Soon after, Rick perks back up and asks a question to the boy standing next to him.
"By the way, everyone's been asking for a souvenir or whatnot. What would you like?"
Twister turns around to look out at the town view as he speaks.
"Ya know, there's always something I've wanted…"
Rick laughs to himself as he turns around to take in the view with him.
"So long as it's not as crazy as Anna's wish for Jewelry, go for it."
Twister laughs to himself as he looks up to the sky.
"Ya know, I've always been into filming. Maybe someday doing movies. Like...do you know about Hollywood?"
Rick thinks to himself as he answers.
"Yeah. It's pretty popular with all the actors living there."
Twister grows quiet again, twiddling with his fingers nervously. He stares back at the ocean. Thoughts start running through his mind. Thinking about the future scared him to death. While Otto and Reggie had the confidence, Twister always saw himself behind the scenes. Giving them the spotlight was his goal. Seeing their future was easy for him. But his own? He struggles with his words as he frivolously tries to explain his thinking.
"Well...they say in class if you...you know...have a dream you want to achieve, you have to be able to visualize it. I know it's probably out of the way for you guys. I just wanna see what it's like. The big sign. The places they make the movies. That would be so rad."
Twister keeps his eyes focusing on the town, too nervous to look at Rick as he continues.
"It sounds kinda silly, huh?"
Rick looks over to his friend, then back outwards at the sky.
"Nah. Not silly at all man."
As he looks up, he starts to think about his own life. How his goals are not even set in his mind. He really envies Twister's ambition. How little he even thought about his own future and what he even wants to do. What seems silly to some is truly important to the boy next to him. He turns towards him and puts his hand on his shoulder.
"I'll see what I can do. Might take Tito a little convincing, but I think I can pull it off."
Twister looks at Rick and smiles.
"Thanks."
Rick smiles back and then thinks to himself before looking back towards the town.
"Shit. Party's probably starting in a bit. Wanna head over together?"
Twister nods and the boys get on their boards and start riding. The ride is smooth all the way to the Rockets, where the rest of the kids are talking in the driveway. As the boys get off their boards, Reggie is quick to greet them.
"About time you guys got here."
Rick gets his helmet off and speaks.
"Yeah. Got caught in conversation. Everything all good?"
Otto chirps up, answering the question.
"Dad says he has some papers for you to fill out before your trip."
Rick shakes his head as he walks towards the house with another sarcastic turn to his tone.
"Wonder what it could be. Already told him I wouldn't sneak out of the hotel."
The kids all laugh as Rick heads inside. The rest chatter for a bit before one voices brings up a question, to much of their surprise.
"Hey. Is it okay if we do something Saturday night?"
The gang looks back at Twister, Reggie being the one to speak.
"Sure. Any ideas?"
Twister confidently speaks up and explains.
"Well how about we do a quick hockey game? We can do 3v3 and Harm can referee. Then probably chill out for a few hours at your guys' place? Well...there's also something I want to talk to you guys about. I'll tell Rick about it when he gets back."
Otto looks at Twister with a mix of fear and shock. His mind starts to wander. Reggie tries to hide the surprise on her face as well, as she looks to the others. After all their nods of approval, Reggie looks back to Twister.
"Sure. Sounds good."
Twister smiles brightly.
"Cool. I gotta use the bathroom. Be right back!"
As Twister goes inside, the group look at each other. Anna is the first to chirp up.
"Should be fun."
Jorge and Harmony nod in approval. Jorge speaks up after.
"Think the food should be done soon. Why don't we head in?"
The three each walk in talking to one another. Sam follows the three behind, quiet but with a clear look of internal thought. Reggie goes to follow her new boyfriend, until she looks behind and sees her brother almost motionless. Sam opens back up the door, to Reggie's surprise.
"You coming?"
Reggie looks to him with a small smile of reassurance.
"I'll be right there."
Sam nods understandably and shuts the door yet again. Reggie walks back to her brother slowly, before speaking to him in as calm a tone as she could muster.
"You okay?"
Otto finally snaps out of his petrification. He looks at his sister, with a face full of anxiety.
"I really hope he isn't going to say what I think he is."
Reggie looks to him, giving every bit of confidence she has in her.
"It's okay. If he does, I'll be here for you both. For now, just trust Twist. You guys are best friends after all."
Otto looks in fear at his sister, yet after a few seconds, finds the strength to compose himself and give his own nod. In the back of his head, every nightmare scenario slowly plays like a horror movie. However, he has to try and be calm. It became clear that it was important for Twister. Reggie did have that right. She puts herself next to her struggling brother and puts on her best smile.
"Let's go in so they don't worry."
Otto slowly follows his sister behind as they join the rest of the group. As everything settles down for the night, the underlying worry of what's next fixates on a good portion of them. While uncertainty hits home, the feeling of mutual comfort is there. Anything could truly happen as the next day comes. However, the eight of them know that at the end of it all, through all their hardships and turmoil, they can rely on each others' company through whatever transpires.
