Chapter 15
Kendall stepped outside the apartment and into the hallway with the police officers while the others waited inside. Once they were outside and knew they were alone, the officers looked at Kendall and frowned as they pulled a notepad and pen out, ready to write down answers to questions they were going to ask. Kendall's body tensed; he was nervous. The police showing up at Apartment 2J asking for him not only caught him off guard, but it didn't help his matter of winning over Mrs. Mitchel to let Logan stay. Things were very complicated, and Kendall bit his bottom lip as he tried to look anywhere but at the two officers.
"Alright, kid, does the name "Old Man Jones" sound familiar?"
That had caught Kendall's attention instantly. Not only did the officer being so blunt about the question make Kendall frown, but the poor boy was shaking nervously in his shoes, hearing the officer say the name out loud. How did they know who that man was? Why was he asking Kendall? Did he know about the drugs? Would he get into trouble if he even mentioned anything of his involvement to the police? These questions filled his mind, and Kendall rubbed the back of his neck, being nervous, his heart was racing, and he was trying to keep himself from looking like a fool in front of the officers; it was more complicated than you could imagine.
When the second officer, whose name tag read Officer Peter, saw how nervous the kid was, he smiled weakly at the boy. "It's alright young man; whatever you tell us here will stay between us."
The first officer, whose name tag read Officer Wilson, nods in agreement and says, "He's right, but we do need you to answer us. Does the name "Old Man Jones" sound familiar?"
Officer Wilson repeats from earlier, making sure to make eye contact with Kendall.
Trying to take deep breaths to keep his nervousness down, Kendall manages to stutter out a few simple words. "Y-Yes officer, it d-d-does. Why?"
With a sigh, Officer Peter says, "Old Man Jones was recently placed in the hospital due to drug over dosage. While he was in the hospital, we were given the warrant to look through his things for this case. So we did, and we found his phone. We looked for all who had been in contact with him and to whom he had sold drugs. You, Mr. Knight, were on the top of his messages list. So we are just asking if you could tell us your side of the story so we can get more information about his drug dealings." Officer Peter explains as he and Officer Wilson give the boy serious looks.
Kendall nods as he frowns; it is was a simple question he could answer, but part of him still had his questions. "Alright, I can do that officers. But what's going to happen to Old Man Jones?"
The blonde-haired boy asks as he bites his bottom lip, trying to keep his nerves down.
A frown is shown on Officer Wilson's face as he eyes the boy before him while saying, "Being that Old Man Jones overdosed, if he doesn't die from it, then he will go to jail. Dealing drugs to minors is illegal." Officer Wilson finishes as Kendall nods and tries to avert his eyes anywhere but the officers. The two officers eye one another as Officer Wilson breaks the tension, "Is there any way you could tell us your side of the story now?"
Kendall willingly gives the officers his side of the story. Make sure to explain in reasonable detail how he met the man, what was said between them, what kind of drugs Kendall was sold, and how long he had used them. Once he was done, poor Kendall was shaking in his shoes even more than before. Reliving the story had brought his emotions up, and he felt himself wanting to cry as he talked about it; he, of course, held back, not wanting to cry in front of the officer. Even though the officers were doing their job, and Kendall felt somewhat bad for snitching on Old Man Jones, Kendall knew he was doing the right thing, telling them his side.
Thanking the boy once they had their story, they left. After they were gone, Kendall went back inside the apartment and explained everything to the others. Though the officers wanted things to be said in private, Kendall had decided to tell the others. He only did this because, after the pills, Kendall swore to himself he wouldn't keep secrets nor make anyone else keep secrets for him. It was a hard lesson to learn what happened between him and Logan, but he realized it, and now everyone knew what he and the officers talked about, and Kendall couldn't help but think he made the right decision telling them all.
"See, mom, the situation is being taken care of, and Kendall was honest with the officers," Logan states as he turns to his mother with a small innocent smile, hoping the look would guilt trip his mother. His mother was a tough one, and Logan knew she only wanted what was best for him and that she loved him, but sometimes her choices were not one's he agreed on. He wanted nothing more than to stay here with his friends not only to keep patching things up but keep being in Big Time Rush. If she took him home, Logan didn't know what he would do with himself.
Mrs. Mitchel eyes her son, studying him. It wasn't often her Hortense disobeyed her nor stood up against her. When he did, it meant he wanted something badly. Mrs. Mitchel sighs, she knew her son didn't want to leave his friends, but she also wanted her son to be safe. She was doing what any other mother would in her situation. Yet, at the same time, she knew what Hortense's friends meant to him, and she didn't want to be the bad guy if she didn't have to be; maybe she was misreading this situation and not getting the whole story. Was that all it was for Kendall, a mistake? Wrong place, wrong time? Mrs. Mitchel eyed the others once more, seeing them waiting for her response. She had trouble coming up with one, but hearing that officers were involved and Kendall took responsibility for his actions by being honest and telling the police might have helped make up her mind easier. Tapping her finger on her coffee mug, Mrs. Mitchel looks from it to her son.
"Fine…" Mrs. Mitchel sighs as she eyes her son with a small smile.
"...You can stay here, but I want to hear from you more often, and I want to stay a few nights if that is alright, just to spend time with you and make sure everything is safe ."
"Of course, you're welcome to stay Joana, let me get the couch ready." Mama Knight smiles. She goes to leave the room, and Katie stops her. "Yes, Katie?"
Katie smiles. "No, it's I'll take the couch; Mrs. Mitchel can stay in my room while she's here; it'll be more comfortable for her. I'll go make sure my room is cleaned."
Katie offers, making everyone look at her slightly surprised, but she smiles at them. Before anyone can protest, Katie starts heading to her room only to see Logan mouth "thank you" to her as she walks by, to which she responds with a nod and smile. Katie only offered because, well, everyone knew that getting on Logan's mother's good side was important, right? So that night, Mrs. Mitchel stayed; it wouldn't have been too bad if she hadn't been such a stuck up-snob about things. What made it worse was that Logan was at his mother's side for every need and whine she had. It annoyed the other three to no end to see him being treated like a slave by his mother, but then Mrs. Mitchel finally deemed it was time for her to go to bed, so she went to Katie's room for the night. Once she was gone, everyone was slightly relieved, especially Kendall, who kept getting insults thrown at him from time to time, Kendall of course, he bit his tongue. But no one had worse than Logan, and the poor boy was exhausted from doing errands for his mother the whole time, just to keep her happy. When Mrs. Mitchel went to sleep, it was around eleven at night, and the others decided it was time they headed to bed as well. All of them had work tomorrow, and while the guys brought up the conversation of their job that night brought up the discussion of their career, Mrs. Mitchel had the idea of coming to see Logan in action at work and possibly talk to his boss. The guys worried about this very much; there was a slight tension in the group as Kendall, Logan, Carlos, and James climbed into their perspective beds.
"She can not be serious about coming to the studio tomorrow?"
Kendall questions, slightly annoyed as he lays in his bed in his and Logan's shared room as he relaxes nicely into the warm comforts of his bed.
Sighing, Logan frowns, "I guess she is. I'm not sure why she is so interested suddenly. She probably wants to talk to Gustavo about this situation and see what he has to say about it."
Logan finishes as he curls up under his blankets.
"But I already told her - "
"I know Kendall, but you know how my mom is. She likes to look at every angle of a situation to help determine her answers for sure. We're lucky she even agreed to let me stay."
"Still, I feel bad - "
"We know you feel bad, but what happened is done, and we can't change the past. All we do is learn from it, and we can tackle each consequence as it comes to us."
"I guess your right; thanks for being an amazing friend Logie."
"Anytime, Kendall, anytime. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Logan switches his night light off, and silence falls over the room as the two settle into their beds. As Kendall slowly drifted to bed, he wondered what tomorrow would bring. He also thinks about the officers, their conversation, and then Old Man Jones comes into mind. If he was going to jail, did that mean Kendall would have to testify against him for evidence? What even did the future hold for Kendall and this situation? The blonde-haired-green-eyed boy finally fell asleep close to midnight, hoping that tomorrow was going to be okay…
