Chapter 3

The group were all sitting just outside of the Duel Rings, taking seats as they looked at Karen curiously as she set her Deck on the table.

"So... I bet you're wondering how I met Pegasus-san." She spoke.

"Even I'm surprised you never told me and Nii-sama you knew Pegasus-san." Mokuba remarked.

"It wasn't like I was trying to hide it. I just didn't think it was worth mentioning." Karen frowned apologetically.

"Knowing the creator of Duel Monsters is a pretty big deal." Jonouchi frowned.

"So how did you meet Pegasus?" Yugi asked curiously. Karen rubbed her bracelet looking at her Deck.

"I guess it's been 1 year and a half now. I started Dueling early and already began entering tournaments here in Japan and in America when I visited Rebecca. During one tournament here in Japan I had met Pegasus. He was there as a special guest and would hand the medal to the winner." Karen began, looking at her Bracelet. "I had won the tournament and came face to face with him. That was when I saw his own Millennium Item."

"The Millennium Eye." Yugi stated.

Karen nodded. "Of course he took notice of my Millennium Bracelet and so he made me an offer." She said.

"An offer?" Anzu questioned.

"He saw how curious I was of the Eye so he said that if I were to beat him in a Duel he would tell me how he received it." Karen explained, shaking her head. "Of course I had lost but I wanted to know and I wanted a rematch so we made an agreement that any time I would enter a tournament he was a guest for he would let me duel him."

"That was when you became well known everyone believed that if Pegasus saw talent in you then you were just as good as they thought you were." Rebecca added.

"They're exaggerating really." Karen sighed. "Then before the start of the Duelist Kingdom, Pegasus had given me this Deck he claims he created just for me or so he said."

"But wait, if you're that good why didn't you go to Duelist Island?" Jonouchi questioned.

"Around the time I was in Egypt visiting my older sister with my dad." Karen frowned. "By the time I got back home I had received the package but it was too late for me to go."

"Fire was peeved about it." Rebecca noted.

"Don't remind me she ranted for days about it." Karen sighed.

"So Pegasus didn't make any notion about wanting your Millennium Bracelet?" Honda asked. Karen blinked but shook her head.

"No nothing of the sort really." She replied.

"And he didn't come off as dangerous to you?" Jonouchi questioned. Karen looked confused but shook her head with a small frown.

"Not really… Even though he had a joyful expression I always felt as if deep down he was just masking a great pain." She frowned.

"You'd be right." Yugi frowned.

"When I saw this it made me want to help him in a way." Karen frowned, taking her Deck in her hand. "I wanted to help ease the pain in his heart in any way I can especially when he gave me this Deck. As a show of thanks." Karen gasped flushing. "B-But I guess that's naive and arrogant of me." She quickly said.

"I disagree." Yugi smiled. "There's nothing wrong with helping people."

"He's right and that's what you do here as Kaiba Land's Idol." Mokuba smiled. "You make all the kids smile and have fun with your songs and help host the events too."

"It's part of the job plus I like making people smile." Karen smiled shyly with a blush.

"Even Nii-sama respects what you do here you should have some confidence." Mokuba grinned.

"That's what I tell her!" Rebecca smiled.

"You two." Karen groaned with a blush.
"You really are a sweet person Karen." Anzu smiled. Karen's blush grew covering her face feeling herself steaming hearing Fire cooing and giggling at her reaction.

"Well I should get going. I am still technically working." Mokuba smiled, standing up. "I'll see you Saturday, Karen."

"Right." Karen nodded, looking up.

"I should probably go too grandpa will want us to go to America once he finishes up." Rebecca said, standing before hugging Karen. "Thank you so much for helping me Karen."

"Of course Rebecca." Karen smiled hugging back.

The 2 walked away waving before leaving as they watched them go.

"Rebecca really is a nice person." Anzu smiled.

"She may come off as abrupt and hot headed but she is sweet. We've been friends for years." Karen smiled. Yugi smiled looking at her Millennium Bracelet.

"Karen-san." He began.

"Oh you can just call me Karen." She spoke, before smiling shyly. "I take it you're curious about Fire."

"I am." Yugi confirmed.

"Well I'll tell you about Fire if you tell me about Yami." Karen offered smiling. "I'm very curious about him too."

"Well I don't know much about him." Yugi began. "But I can tell you what I do know so far."

"Thank you very much." Karen smiled happily, before she blinked and looked between Anzu, Jonouchi, and Honda.

"Um this might be sounding a little odd…"

"Don't worry about it we know about Yami." Honda assured.

"Eh? You do?" Karen blinked surprised. "And you actually believe it all?"

"It was very surprising when Yugi first told us but during our time in the Duelist Kingdom we began to know of Yami and now he's our friend as well." Anzu smiled.

"So you believe me about Fire…?" Karen blinked stunned.

"Yes." Yugi nodded.

"We've had our fair share of magical stuff so it's no surprise to us." Jonouchi grinned.

Karen looked at them stunned before rubbing her bracelet once again.

"I began wearing the Bracelet 2 years ago when I put it on for the first time that was when Fire had appeared." She began.

Flashback

Karen sighed finishing her homework stretching her father in the museum for business and her sister with her friends. She was alone at home. She looked to her desk drawer for a moment before opening it and getting out a wooden box and opened it to reveal the Millennium Bracelet she took it out and examined it once again as she always did ever since her father gave it to her. She held it up the sunlight through her window made the gold shine and gleam making her smile. With a curious expression she fit the bracelet on her right wrist. "Wow it fits like a glove." She spoke surprised.

Suddenly the bracelet seemed to glow with the sunlight making her gasp and shield her eyes before it suddenly died down shocking and confusing her. "Wh-What was?" She wondered stunned.

So you're the one wearing it. A voice suddenly spoke in her mind.

Karen gasped looking around shaking. "Who's there?" She spoke.

Now there's no need to shake. The voice spoke once again. Just turn around.

Karen blinked slowly, turning to face the window when she gasped upon seeing Fire by the window, the sunlight behind her making her glow transparent as Karen looked at her awed. "Who… Who are you?" She squeaked.

Good question. She hummed, tugging a lock on her blazing vermillion hair. I guess you can call me Fire.

End of flashback…

"Fire has no recollection of her history whatsoever, only the name Fire which we guessed was her name." Karen finished explaining. "It took me a while before I got used to her and stopped being scared of her especially when she takes over my body. Over time we got used to one another and we became friends after that."

You were so timid with me before. Fire chuckled softly.

"That was me when my other self took over my body." Yugi laughed. "I was scared of Yami back then too."

"How did you meet Yami?" Karen asked curiously.

"By completing the Millenium Puzzle." Yugi spoke.

"Completing? What do you mean?" Karen asked, confused.

"It was in pieces when I first got it." Yugi explained.

"Pieces?" Karen blinked surprised. "So it was a literal puzzle you had to complete then?"

"Yes." Yugi confirmed.

"It mustn't have been easy putting it together." Karen remarked surprised.

"Oh it wasn't." Yugi spoke.

"I feel like I got the easy way out." Karen sweatdropped. "But then when you completed it. Was that when?"

"Yes." Yugi nodded in confirmation.

When did he finally complete it? Fire questioned. Karen looked to Fire before facing Yugi.

"Fire's curious when did you complete the puzzle?" She asked.

"This year." Yugi spoke. "Took me 8 years to complete it."

"8 years…" Karen blinked stunned.

"You should've seen him." Anzu smiled. "He was persistent on completing the Puzzle making charts and ideas of the shapes for the puzzle."

"I almost feel bad having the easy way out. I only had to put on my Item." Karen said with a sheepish smile.

"It's okay." Yugi smiled.

"So how did you and Yami get along?" Karen asked.

"At first we didn't." Yugi admitted. "But that changed when we had to duel Pegasus in the final match of the Duelist Kingdom Tournament."

"What do you mean?" Karen asked, confused.

"I mean we performed the Mind Shuffle to confuse Pegasus's Millenium Eye for starters." Yugi explained.

"His Millennium Eye...! So I was right it can have the user read minds!" Karen gasped. "But Mind Shuffle?"

"The 2 of us would switch places in order for Pegasus not to read the other's mind." Yugi explained. Karen grew wide eyed in shock by this knowing Fire did the same.

Why didn't we think of that!? Fire groaned.

"I'm a little mad at ourselves that we didn't." Karen muttered with a sweatdrop.

"Uh Karen?" Yugi blinked.

"It's nothing." Karen waved her hand.

Just our own stupidity. Fire muttered.

"So does this mean Fire and that Bracelet have some kind of power?" Jonouchi asked curiously. Karen looked up before nodding.

"Yes you can say that." She admitted. "It's to recover damage."

"Recover damage?" Honda questioned.

"Mental damage I mean. To recover the mind of another." Karen nodded. "For example if the victim had been attacked with a mental attack like say from a Shadow Game with the Millennium Bracelet, Fire is able to help them recover."

That could even mean my Mind Crush. Yami remarked surprised.

"So that means you and Fire can be healers." Anzu remarked surprised.

"Something like that yeah. Even though ironically we deal lots of burn damage when we duel." Karen chuckled sheepishly.

"Yet you both no doubt have kindness within you both." Yugi smiled. Karen flushed smiling softly.

"That's kind of you to say Yugi." She smiled.

"Karen." They all looked up to see Iemitsu walking over to them with Sugoroku. "We should get going. Sugoroku just got out of the hospital so he should get home for rest." He said.

"Oh you're right." Karen nodded, standing before bowing to the others. "It was very nice to meet all of you."

"Same to you Karen." Yugi nodded. "Is there any way we can contact you?"

"Eh?" Karen spoke, surprised.

"Just so we can see each other at any time." Yugi spoke.

"Yeah we would love to see you again." Anzu smiled. Karen blinked before getting out her phone and shyly held it out.

"Here's my number… You can call at any time." She said.

"Except 5 in the morning. Today was an exception." Iemitsu spoke.

"Dad." Karen sweatdropped, Fire laughing next to her.

"We'll be sure not to do that." Jonouchi grinned.

After exchanging phone numbers Karen left with Iemitsu as the 2 walked.

"So what did you 2 think of them?" Iemitsu asked.

"They all seemed nice. And it was really a surprise they believed about Fire." Karen hummed, as they walked.

I like them. They have a good nature about them. Fire smiled, her back to Karen's back.

Karen looked to Fire.

"When you saw Yami did you think he was a threat?" She asked curiously.

Hmm… No when I saw him… I thought that finally. Finally I had found what I had been searching for. Fire spoke with a nostalgic smile. Karen looked surprised, having a thoughtful look of her own.

After making sure his grandpa was resting, Yugi went to his room sitting on his desk with a sigh.

"Today sure was surprising." He remarked.

Indeed it was Aibou. Yami agreed, appearing next to him. Yugi looked at his darker half. "What do you think of the spirit of the Millennium Bracelet, Fire?" He asked curiously.

"What do you mean Yugi?" Yami asked.

"I mean what did you think of her personally." Yugi explained. "You seemed as if you enjoyed dueling her. You didn't have your guard up like you usually do with someone with a Millennium Item."

"I could tell she was no threat." Yami retorted. "She did say she wanted to duel me for fun. So why would I keep my guard up?"

"Well you aren't one to trust people so easily." Yugi said with a knowing smile as he looked thoughtful. "But they really were a surprise. I was so worried Karen might've been a forced host like Bakura was. I'm really glad that isn't the case."

"Yes." Yami nodded in agreement.

"Here's hoping we get to see them again soon." Yugi smiled.

"I'd like that too." Yami smiled back.

"Oh no! I'm gonna be late!" Karen was quickly running as fast as she could wearing the uniform for Domino High, carrying her school bag. "Fire! Why didn't you try to wake me?!" She groaned.

I did Sweet One but you're not a morning person, remember? You just turned away and kept sleeping. Fire hummed in her mind.

"Doesn't mean you give up!" Karen whined. "It's my first day in a regular school! I can't be late!" Karen quickly ran, seeing the school before swiftly rushing inside just before the bell rang, making her sigh in great relief. "Thank goodness! Just in time." She panted, hands on her knees.

Guess all the performing practices are paying off. Fire chuckled. Karen scowled before quickly dusting herself off checking her appearance before sighing in relief before heading to the office.

"Um hello?" She spoke to the lady in the front desk. "I-I'm here to attend. My name is Karen Yamamoto."

"Hmm let see… Ah! Here you are Yamamoto-san. We're so glad you can make it." The lady smiled, handing her some papers. "Here is your schedule and a map of the school and there would be your homeroom. We've already told your teacher you'll be coming."

"Thank you very much." Karen smiled shyly, taking the papers before bowing. Karen walked out of the office following the map to where her classroom was standing at the door.

Remember, take a deep breath, chin up, and have confidence. Fire smiled at her.

"Yeah." Karen smiled back with a nod. Karen then knocked on the door hearing no doubt the teacher's voice.

"Ah that must be our new student now. Please come in." He called. Karen opened the door as she walked in the classroom as the teacher wrote her name on the chalkboard.

"Now if you may introduce yourself to the class." The teacher said.

"Y-Yes my name is Karen Yamamoto it is a pleasure to meet you all." Karen spoke with a soft blush, before bowing.

"Ah!" Karen blinked before standing straight and blinked surprised to see a familiar group of people.

"Oh." Karen blinked.

Hahaha! What are the odds! Hahaha! Fire laughed in her mind, as Karen sweatdropped.

"Stop your gawking and sit down Jonouchi!" The teacher scowled, glaring at Jonouchi who was gaping at Karen. Jonouchi quickly sat down as the teacher sighed looking at Karen.

"Well Yamamoto-san considering you're joining us in the start of the new semester is a stroke of good luck." He replied. "Your seat will be behind Mutou-san. Mutou-san raise your hand." Yugi did so as Karen nodded walking to her desk before taking a seat Karen glanced at Yugi before giving a shy wave. Yugi smiled giving a wave of his own as class began for them, Yami and Fire appeared beside their hosts looking at one another.

Well looks like we meet again Yami. She grinned.

Yes it does. Yami remarked.

Should've known you guys attend the school here. But I can tell my Hikari is happy to see you all again. Fire smiled, looking down at Karen as she wrote down notes.

I can say the same about my Aibou. Yami smiled.

Aibou so he's your partner. Fire remarked with a hum.

And Karen is yours. Yami pointed out.

I don't deny that but to me she is much more. Fire admitted. You can say that she is the light to my darkness. Something I'm sure you and I have that in common.

You're right. Yami nodded, looking down at Yugi.

Guess you can say they're the better halves. She grinned.

In a way, yes. Yami retorted.

Glad you and I agree. Fire smiled, as they watched their hosts.

"Man! You really surprised us Karen!" Karen blushed looking at her lunch. The group had invited her to have lunch with them on the roof of the school which she agreed to as they sat and ate.

"I was a bit surprised myself though I should've guessed you all would be students here too." Karen admitted sheepishly.

"I'm surprised you just started attending here." Anzu replied.

"I had a private tutor since my dad is an archaeologist. He gets called to help with digging sites quite a lot and I would go with him to avoid being home alone." Karen explained, nibbling on her rice ball.

"Don't you stay with your mom?" Honda asked curiously. At that comment Karen sweatdropped.

"My mom… Is a bit eccentric." She spoke.

"Eccentric?" They blinked. Karen reached in her bag getting out a photo holding it out to them. "Here this might help a little." She said. Yugi took the photo for them all to look it was a picture of Karen with Iemitsu along with a young girl, though older than Karen, with gold-orange sunset hair and glass green eyes, and a beautiful woman with pure red hair and Karen's forest green eyes.

"Is the red head your mother?" Yugi asked curiously, Karen nodding.

"I don't see the big deal." Jonouchi began. "She seems normal-"

"No way!" Anzu shrieked, making the guys jump surprised. "Your mom is Akame?!"

"You recognize her." Karen smiled slightly.

"You know her Anzu?" Honda questioned.

"Of course! Akame Yamamoto is a famous model/dancer! She's very popular here in Japan and especially in America she's one of my idols." Anzu explained, looking at Karen. "I only assumed it was coincidence you 2 had the same last name."

"Heh yeah most people are often surprised." Karen smiled shyly. "Mom is always busy with her work so she's rarely home. We sometimes go visit her in America but often I stick with dad. It was only recently we settled back down after he got a job as a curator for the museum and we talked about getting me enrolled in a proper school." They looked surprised looking at one another.

"But doesn't it get lonely not seeing her?" Jonouchi asked with a frown. Karen grew wide eyed quickly shaking her head.

"No, no! I never minded her job is important and does it very well. I always admired mom on her job. So I understand she's very busy." She quickly said. They all looked at her surprised looking at one another Yami glancing at Fire who gave a strained smile.

The final bell rang signaling the end of the day as Karen put away her things in her bag.

"Hey Karen." Yugi spoke. Karen looked up to face the others as they smiled. "Want to come with us to my grandpa's shop?" Yugi asked her.

"Is that ok?" Karen asked, surprised.

"Sure it is." Yugi smiled. "Grandpa won't mind at all."

"And when we're there you and I can duel!" Jonouchi grinned.

Why not Karen. Fire smiled. Karen blinked before giving a smile and nod as she stood up.

"Sure! Sounds fun." She smiled. The 5 walked out of the school and walked for the Game Shop, Karen talking with them, smiling and laughing as they walked Fire and Yami watching them.

Yugi really is a good kid. She hummed. Same for the rest of them. You're lucky to know them Yami.

Yes. Yami nodded in agreement as he watched Yugi, Karen, and Jonouchi duel. Fire glanced at Yami as they watched them.

So I take it you have amnesia as well? She asked.

I do. Yami confirmed.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with only the name Fire it doesn't give much. Fire hummed.

So Karen is helping you recover your past like Yugi is for me. Yami spoke.

Not just Karen but her father and sister as well. Fire smiled lightly. Iemitsu is looking up any legends that could resemble me while her sister, as she attends college in Egypt, searches for information there. I owe her family a lot.

That's good. Yami remarked.

Yeah they're good people. I was lucky to be founded by them. Fire nodded, looking to Yami. We both were.

I couldn't agree more. Then Karen looked up at the clock and gasped.

"Oh! I didn't know how late it got. I should get home and dad's probably wondering where I am." She said, collecting her cards.

"Why not have Yugi walk you home." Sugoroku suggested.

"Oh no it's fine I can go alone." Karen assured.

"Grandpa is right." Yugi spoke as he too picked up his cards. "It is dark out there as well. So I'll walk you home."

"I don't want to trouble you." Karen frowned.

"You wouldn't trouble him. Yugi is a gentleman." Anzu smiled. Yugi blushed lightly at Anzu's comment.

"A-Anzu…!" Yugi stammered.

"Aw no need to get embarrassed buddy." Jonouchi grinned. Yugi shook his head.

"You're probably right Jonouchi." Yugi smiled.

"So it's agreed." Honda smiled. Karen flushed looking to Yugi.

"If you really don't mind." She began.

"I don't mind at all." Yugi smiled.

"Thank you." Karen shyly smiled, bowing to Sugoroku. "And thank you very much for letting me come over Sugoroku-san."

"Ah call me Grandpa everyone does." Sugoroku smiled. "You can come here any time."

"I will." Karen nodded with a smile.

She waved goodbye to the rest as she and Yugi walked out the store walking to her home talking the rest of the way until finally reaching her house.

"Thank you again for walking me home Yugi." She thanked.

"You're welcome Karen." Yugi smiled.

"And… I overheard Fire and Yami talking about how he has amnesia if you guys want. I'm sure my dad and my sister would help you guys out too on finding out Yami's past." She said.

"That'd be great." Yugi grinned. "So we'll be helping both of our partners."

"Yeah." Karen agreed with a smile. "Makes me really glad I got to meet you."

"Same here." The 2 smiled at one another and Karen looked at her house.

"Well I better get inside." She spoke softly.

"Alright." Yugi nodded.

"Good night Yugi." She smiled.

"NIght Karen." Yugi smiled back. With that Karen went inside closing the door behind her with a small smile before she meeped looking up at Fire who had a curious expression.

"Wh-What?" She questioned.

Oh nothing just seems like you like Yugi. Fire hummed.

"W-Well he's a very nice person and I enjoy his company." Karen spoke with a flush. Fire only hummed thoughtfully while Karen scowled.

"Oh whatever I gotta go talk with dad." She huffed, walking off. Fire snickered following behind with a knowing smile.
