Percy spun the coin counter clockwise on the solid oak table against the far wall of the common room. He'd had the coin since forever. It was just a muggle coin with an eagle on it, he didn't even remember where he'd gotten it.
For years, he'd used it as a good luck charm, flipping it whenever he needed to make a decision, rubbing the engraved eagle when he got nervous. It seemed like the coin had lost its luck though.
Lately, nothing seemed to be going right. He'd dropped his book in the lake. He'd flunked a history of magic test... that was just, that really made him angry. He knew he'd studied for it, but once he'd sat down and looked at the questions, nothing seemed to trigger the answers in his brain. He was sure now that his lucky coin had lost its luck.
Now, he just needed to figure out how to get it back. He'd found a book about lucky talismans in the library and was doing everything he could to revert the coin back to its original lucky state.
"That won't work," Hermione commented as she watched the coin spin off the edge of the table. She reached out and caught it easily, holding it between her fingers. Slowly she moved her hand moving the coin from one side of her hand to the other. Percy watched her, taking in the fact she was standing before him talking to him, and not just as Ron's brother.
"It has to work."
"You're going about it all wrong, you know. What you're doing is trying to create a lucky charm. This is already one, therefore what you need to do is figure out how the luck got reversed in the first place. I would personally blame the twins, but it's possible you used up all the good luck and just have to go though the bad luck part of it. There's always a balance, isn't there?" she asked, sitting down in the chair next to him and handing the coin.
"Ron says you're a know it all, and bossy," Percy muttered, looking at the witch now sitting next to him. Her curls bounced against her shoulders, slightly standing out against the almond colored jumper she was wearing. It looked soft and Percy wondered it she could break his fingers if he reached out and touched it.
"Ron says a lot of things," Hermione commented, looking at the book. "Can I offer you advice?" she asked, leaning over the table slightly. The silvery coin sat on the table between them.
"Um, sure, if you think you can figure this out. I've got something big coming up and I need all the luck I can get," Percy stated.
"Maybe that's part of the problem, you rely too much on the coin's luck instead of making your own, I mean, it's only a coin."
"Fantastic, that means there's no way it will work. Maybe... no, maybe you're right. No, no, you're almost always right. I've noticed that, how even when Ron and Harry come up with things, you're the one who knows the right answer, the right book to look in."
"It's just something that's always come naturally to me. I like learning and knowledge. The hat almost put me in Ravenclaw," Hermione admitted.
"I'm glad it didn't," he whispered, spinning the coin on the table again. At this point, it was more out of habit than trying to make the coin's luck work again.
"Why? So I can help your brother not fail all his classes?"
"No, well, yes, I am thankful that you're helping him. Ron's got brains if and when he chooses to use them. No, because if you'd been in Ravenclaw, we probably wouldn't be talking right now and," Percy paused, looking at Hermione. She was looking back at him, slowly he leaned in closer to her, his lips finally meeting hers.
The kiss started slowly but slowly grew from being caste to passionate. The coin finally stopped spinning, landing eagle side up, the side Percy always used as yes he should do something. The clatter of the coin caused Hermione and Percy to break apart.
"I guess, maybe your were right, I didn't need the coin after all," Percy said.
"It did give me an excuse to talk to you," Hermione replied, giving him a wide smile. "And if I hadn't stopped to talk to you, to see what you were doing-"
She was interrupted by Percy kissing her again. Soon the coin was completely forgotten as they got to know each others lips.
