Chapter 11

"Everything is proceeding as planned." Marik spoke to himself inside an empty ship's deck area, shaking a cup of ice in his hand. "Soon the Pharaoh will arrive to face my newest Mind Slave. He won't want to harm little Shizuka. Heh heh heh… Should he do that, that fool Jonouchi will never forgive him."

"Regardless, Master Marik, I already got 12 locator cards." Rishid spoke as he approached Marik, handing 6 to him.

"Excellent Rishid." Marik grinned, taking the 6 locator cards. "If today's plan goes well, all that you've done to obtain these locator cards will be absolutely meaningless. But it's fine either way. Might as well enter the quarterfinals just in case today fails." He looked out through Shizuka's blank eyes. "Ahhh...the Pharaoh and his 2 foolish friends arrived. Along with Seto Kaiba too. Excellent."

"Shizuka!" Jonouchi called out. His sister's expression remained blank.

"I'm not Shizuka you fool." Shizuka remarked coldly.

"What?!" Jonouchi gaped.

"That's Marik, Jonouchi." Yami told his friend.

"More like one of Marik's tricks to me." Kaiba scowled.

"It's not a trick!" Yami shot back.

"Whatever." Kaiba remarked nonchalantly.

"Pharaoh! If you want your friend's sister freed from my control, then you must duel me!" Shizuka called Yami out. "Oh, and don't think you can use Slifer the Sky Dragon against me either!"

"He won't have to." Jonouchi stepped forward before Yami could say anything. "Because I'm dueling you!"

"It makes no difference who duels against my Mind Slave!" Marik shot back through Shizuka's mouth. "Either way, one of you shall lose and be sent to the bottom of the ocean!"

"Jonouchi." Yami began. "Didn't you say that your sister needed an eye operation?"

"I did." Jonouchi confirmed.

"So how come she can see just fine?" Yami inquired.

"Probably freakhead's doing." Jonouchi scoffed as he stepped onto the walkway so he was across from Shizuka; his ankles soon shackled just like Shizuka's. "While I'm happy she can see, I doubt she'll be happy to see me get hurt here. But I have to do this."

"Yami!" Fire called, she and Kisara ran to them.

"Fire, Kisara!" Yami turned to see them.

"Seto! The duel breaks all the Battle City rules!" Mokuba pointed out. "I know you don't like Jonouchi, but please! Stop it before either of them gets killed!" Kaiba clenched his teeth, knowing Mokuba was right.

"As the administrator of this tournament, I declare this duel invalid!" Kaiba snapped.

"Hahaha! Nice try Seto Kaiba!" Marik laughed through Shizuka's mouth. "Should you do that, then I'll drag Shizuka down to the bottom of the ocean, along with her pathetic brother!"

"There's nothing we can do to stop this duel." Fire frowned.

"Ugh…..! Then the duel will go on….!" Kaiba groaned, defeated.

I'll set you free Shizuka. Jonouchi thought as he and Shizuka activated their duel disks and drew their 5 card starting hands.

"DUEL!"

"Oh, before we start, look up." Shizuka spoke. They all did so and gaped upon seeing the large anchor that hung from above. "Don't even think about stalling this out. Because if you do, we both fall into the ocean if no winner is declared within the hour."

"What?!" Mokuba yelled, shocked.

"Marik!" Yami gritted his teeth.

"Did I speak slow enough for you to understand?" Marik mocked Jonouchi through Shizuka's mouth.

"Yeah yeah." Jonouchi rolled his eyes.

"Then why don't you start your turn?" Shizuka questioned.

"Fine, I will!" Jonouchi shot back as he drew his card. (Jonouchi's hand: 6 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 4000. Shizuka's hand: 5 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.) Jonouchi looked at his hand, then back at his mind controlled sister.

Aside from what Honda taught her, she shouldn't have that much information on Duel Monsters. Jonouchi thought. But considering the freakazoid brainwashed her, there's a high chance that she has all the information she needs to perform extremely well here. I better play it safe for now.

"I Summon Alligator Sword in Defense and set 2 cards." Jonouchi spoke. "That's it."

"That's it? Come on brother. I know you can do better than that." Shizuka remarked coldly as she drew her card. "Draw." (Jonouchi's hand: 3 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 4000. Shizuka's hand: 6 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.) Shizuka looked at her hand, then back up at Jonouchi.

"Since you won't be serious, then I will." Shizuka remarked. "I activate the Continuous Spell, The Shrine in the Sky!" A card depicting a massive shrine sitting on clouds appeared in front of Shizuka.

"The Shrine in the Sky?" Fire grew wide eyed, shocked. "Then the Deck she has is..!"

"What? What does she have?" Jonouchi asked.

"Darkness to light. The angels of God." Fire frowned.

"Archlords." Yami remarked.

"Aren't those the light counterparts of the Darklords?" Mokuba questioned.

"That's right. The angels that serve under God with the holy blessing." Fire frowned.

"That Guardian is correct." Shizuka spoke. "But that's not all I'm doing. I activate the effect of Archlord Humility in my hand! By revealing this card to you and discard 1 card from my hand, as well as banishing 1 Level 9 or higher Fairy monster from my Deck, I can Special Summon this card! I choose to banish the Level 10 Archlord Awilix from my Deck!" Upon doing so, the light counterpart to Darklord Superbia appeared onto Shizuka's field. A towering yellow and white-armored angel. (Archlord Humility, Level 8 LIGHT Fairy-type monster, ATK/DEF: 2400/2900. Jonouchi's hand: 3 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 4000. Shizuka's hand: 3 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.)

"It's huge!" Mokuba gaped.

"Hmm yes." Kaiba remarked. "And if Jonouchi is not careful, he'll be defeated right here and now. Which is honestly fine by me. He's a 3rd rate Duelist with a 4th rate Deck anyway. How he even got 2nd place at the Duelist Kingdom Tournament is beyond me."

"Not now Seto!" Fire hissed, elbowing his gut.

"Ugh…!" Kaiba grunted. "What's your problem? You know what I say is true."

"Act like a jerk on your own time when lives aren't on the line." Fire deadpanned.

"Lives are always on the line." Kaiba remarked coldly. "Suck it up and move on. If Jonouchi loses, big whoop."

"How about the peanut gallery shut up and let me duel!" Jonouchi snapped.

"For once we agree on something." Kaiba told Jonouchi nonchalantly.

"Awilix and The Shrine in the Sky's effects activate!" Shizuka announced. "When Awilix is Tributed or banished, I can return 1 face-up card on your field to the bottom of your Deck!" Alligator Sword glowed yellow before vanishing from Jonouchi's field.

"Oh no! I'm defenseless now!" Jonouchi gaped.

"That's right." Shizuka grinned. "But that's not all. Now my Shrine's effect activates! You see, should a Fairy monster be Tributed or discarded to the GY, I can apply 1 of these effects: 1.) I can banish 1 Set card on the field in the GYs. Or 2.) I can set 1 Spell/Trap from my Deck that lists "The Sanctuary in the Sky" in its text or "The Fountain in the Sky". I of course choose to set 1 Spell/Trap from my Deck." A card ejected out of Shizuka's Deck; thus she set it. "Now that's done, time to attack! Archlord Humility, attack Jonouchi directly!" The angel raised its right hand and fired a beam of energy at Jonouchi. The beam connected, and Jonouchi skidded backwards. His ankles received a backlash and he clenched his teeth to prevent himself from crying out in pain. (Jonouchi's LP: 4000 - 2400 = 1600. Jonouchi's hand: 3 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 1600. Shizuka's hand: 3 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.)

"He lost over half his LP!" Mokuba gasped.

"I set 1 card and end my turn." Shizuka concluded. "It's your move, brother."

"Ugh….!" Jonouchi groaned as he fell to his knees from the aftershock. He slammed his hands into the ground before clenching them into fists. Slowly, he stood back up.

"One more attack like that and Jonouchi will sink." Fire frowned.

I have to get through to her somehow! Jonouchi thought.

"I draw!" (Jonouchi's hand: 4 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 1600. Shizuka's hand: 2 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.)

"Jonouchi can win." Yami spoke.

"Whatever helps you Yugi." Kaiba scowled. "His chances of victory are low, but not impossible." Jonouchi looked at his hand, then at the field.

What can I do? Jonouchi thought. My Deck isn't equipped to handle an archetype like this one. That cheapskate must have known and gave sis a deck that completely counters mine. The same thing must have happened when Yugi and rich boy tag teamed those 2 Rare Hunters.

"What's the matter brother? Too afraid to make a move?" Shizuka mocked. Jonouchi looked up and scowled.

"The only thing I'm afraid about is you drowning." Jonouchi remarked.

"If that's the case, why not just throw the duel?" Shizuka questioned.

"You know why I can't." Jonouchi retorted. "And I'll start out by activating the Spell card, Roll of Fate! Now I roll a six-sided die. Depending on the number I roll, I draw that many cards. But then I must banish that same number."

"As if I'd allow you to draw more cards!" Shizuka snapped as she thrusted her right hand forward. "I activate the Counter Trap, Divine Punishment! If you'd activate a card effect while The Sanctuary in the Sky is on the field, I can negate its activation and destroy it!"

"What?!" Jonouchi watched as his Spell card shattered. "Dammit! My one chance to draw more cards, gone!"

"Heh heh heh… You're a fool if you thought I didn't see that coming." Shizuka grinned.

"Just as bad as the Darklords on countering." Fire muttered.

"How bad were they?" Mokuba asked.

"Ask Kisara. She dealt with the worst of it." Fire frowned.

"They were bad." Kisara remarked. "Playing effects on our turns, disrupting our plays in more ways than one."

"They're the trolls of Duel Monsters and fit this guy." Fire scowled, pointing to Kaiba. Kaiba glanced at Fire and rolled his eyes in irritation.

"Me? Why would I use some weak monster type like Fairy?" Kaiba scowled.

"And with how Jonouchi's Deck works, he's going to be in a corner fast." Fire frowned, ignoring Kaiba.

"So brother, what will you do now?" Shizuka wondered.

"Free you from Marik's control of course!" Jonouchi shot back. Shizuka just laughed.

"Then tell me, how will you accomplish that?" Shizuka wondered aloud. "You know that should you win, I'll be dragged to the bottom of the ocean. Is winning this duel that important to you?"

"Not as important as saving my sister from your grip Marik!" Jonouchi snapped. That small outburst caused Shizuka's eyes to widen, then flicker between dull and brown.

At the ship, Marik's Millennium Rod slipped in his right hand, which he caught before it fell to the ground.

"This can't be happening! I'm losing my control on my Mind Slave!" Marik gnashed his teeth angrily. Rishid remained silent in response.

"Save me? You can barely stand up!" Shizuka snapped back, Marik back in control of Shizuka.

"Then I guess I'll go for broke! I Summon Baby Dragon!" Jonouchi announced. A baby orange dragon appeared onto Jonouchi's field. (Baby Dragon, Level 3 WIND Dragon-type monster, ATK/DEF: 1200/700. Jonouchi's hand: 2 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 1600. Shizuka's hand: 2 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.)

"A baby dragon? What do you plan to do with that?" Marik mocked Jonounchi through Shizuka.

"You'll see!" Jonouchi grinned. "But first, I activate Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy your 1 remaining Set card!" Shizuka tsked as her Set card was blown off the field.

"Alright! Looks like Jonouchi can win after all!" Mokuba smiled.

Especially if he's going for that stupid luck based combo. Kaiba thought.

This is it. I can win this duel. Jonouchi thought as he looked down at his 2 face-down cards. Graceful and Skull Dice. If I get a 4 or higher on both, the difference in our 2 monsters ATK will be between 4200-6800. I know it's risky, but I have to do it. For Shizuka.

"Alright! Enough thinking! Time for action!" Jonouchi declared as he thrusted his right hand forward. "Baby Dragon, bite that Archlord into pieces for me, would you?!" Baby Dragon made a noise before flying towards Archlord Humility.

"If he's attacking, that means!" Fire gasped.

"Go my Dice!" Jonouchi grinned as both his face-downs flipped face-up.

"What?!" Shizuka/Marik gaped. "What are you doing?!"

"About to win of course." Jonouchi smiled. "You see, depending on the numbers rolled, your monster and my monster will have their ATKs reduced/increased divided/multiplied by the number!"

"Your plan will never work!" Shizuka shot back.

"You should know I believe in my cards Shizuka!" Jonouchi retorted. "And I believe in my Dice to come through for me! Go!" Both of the dice were thrown by the small angel and devil and into the air.

"He's risking everything on these rolls." Kaiba grunted. "A complete waste of time."

"This is a bit reckless, but if he can manage to pull it off…" Fire muttered.

"He can win, or severely damage her LP." Yami remarked. The 2 dice landed on 4. Jonouchi stared at them before grinning.

"Yes! That means your Humility's ATK goes down to 600 while my Baby Dragon goes to 4800!"

"Impossible!" Shizuka/Marik growled.

"He actually pulled it off…" Kaiba murmured.

"You…..!"

"Baby Dragon, finish this!" Jonouchi grinned. Just as Baby Dragon was about to do just that, when Jonouchi lowered his hand. "No...I can't do it….." Baby Dragon stopped in his tracks.

"What's he doing?" Kisara questioned. "If he let the attack go through, he'd win." At Jonouchi's words, Shizuka grinned.

"I see. So you weren't able to finish me off." Shizuka remarked coldly. "In that case, I'll finish you off! Draw!" (Jonouchi's hand: 0 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 1600. Shizuka's hand: 3 cards. Shizuka's LP: 4000.)

"But the problem is if he does win Shizuka will be dragged to the ocean." Fire pointed out. "It's a no win situation." Shizuka looked at her hand and smiled.

"I have no need to use more cards to end you. But to ensure you can't do anything else, I activate Heavy Storm! This destroys all Spell/Traps on the field!" The storm flew towards each of the Spell/Traps on the field. Despite this, Jonouchi's lips formed a small smile.

"Too bad for you Marik." Jonouchi remarked. "I activate Bad Luck Blast and Secret Blast! Now you take 300 damage for each card on your field. You have 3, so you take 900 damage!" Shizuka tsked as her LP decreased. (Shizuka's LP: 4000 - 900 = 3100. Jonouchi's hand: 0 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 1600. Shizuka's hand: 2 cards. Shizuka's LP: 3100.)

"And now Bad Luck Blast deals us both 1200 damage!" Jonouchi continued as his and his sister's LPs decreased. (Jonouchi's LP: 1600 - 1200 = 400. Shizuka's LP: 3100 - 1200 = 1900. Jonouchi's hand: 0 cards. Jonouchi's LP: 400. Shizuka's hand: 2 cards. Shizuka's LP: 1900.)

"So you dealt us both damage." Shizuka remarked as she dusted the debris off of her clothes. "But it makes no difference. As soon as I attack, I win the duel."

"Don't be so sure about that." Jonouchi grinned. "Since you destroyed my Traps via a card effect, you take 1000 damage! Since both of them have this effect, take 2000 damage!"

"So you plan to finish me off that way, huh?" Shizuka questioned as the 2 blasts from Jonouchi's Traps came towards her.

"I have to sis. Sorry." Jonouchi admitted.

"In that case, I suppose I'll have to reflect the damage right back at you." Shizuka retorted.

"How does she plan to do that?" Mokuba wondered.

"If she has that card…" Fire muttered.

"What card?" Kisara asked.

"Fire?" Yami turned to face her.

"I activate the effect of Archlord Raphael in my hand!" Shizuka announced. "By discarding it from my hand, I don't take any damage, but you take it instead of me!" She was about to discard the card, but her right hand stopped inches away from the card.

"She stopped?" Mokuba grew wide eyed.

Is she fighting Marik's control? Fire thought.

I…...I can't do it! Shizuka thought.

Do it now! Marik told her via the link he created with his Millennium Rod.

"I….I can't….!" Shizuka spoke with her actual voice and not Marik's influenced one. "Jonounchi is my brother! I won't do it!"

"Fine! In that case, I'll MAKE you do it!" Marik snapped at her, increasing the power of his Millennium Rod's control over her mind. "Activate its effect! NOW!"

"As I was saying, I activate Archlord Raphael's effect! By discarding it, enjoy a taste of your own cards' effects!" A barrier formed by the archangel surrounded Shizuka, then reflected the damage back at Jonouchi. (Jonouchi's LP: 400 - 2000 = 0.) Utmost immediately afterwards, Shizuka put her hands to her head, realizing what just happened, much to Marik's shock.

"Impossible! She broke free?! Because of a sibling bond?!" Marik gnashed his teeth in anger.

"BROTHER!" Shizuka cried out. Jonouchi raised his head slightly to look up at his sister. A weak smile on his lips.

"Guess it didn't take much to free you, huh sis…" Jonouchi whispered.

"Oh god! What should I do?!" Shizuka found herself hyperventilating.

"Get out of here!" Jonouchi shot at her. "Unchain yourself and go over where my friends are! Or something! You beat me here, even if it wasn't you dueling. Regardless, please unchain yourself. If you don't, you'll be dragged down with me. And if either of us should die, it's better me than you. Live for both of us. Alright?"

"Brother….." Shizuka whispered. Slowly, she bent down to grab the key in the open box and unchained herself. By the time she did, the 30 second leeway on the anchor's timer had run out; thus pulling/dragging Jonouchi down with it and into the ocean. By the time Shizuka had reached her brother's friends, her body was shaking uncontrollably.

"I…..I…" Shizuka couldn't speak right.

"Oh man…" Mokuba spoke softly.

"Yugi!" They all turned to see Anzu, Honda, and Otogi running to them frantically before they gasped.

"What happened?!" Honda demanded. "Where's Jonouchi?!" Fire carefully wrapped an arm around Shizuka's shoulders to hopefully help her stand. Yami turned to see the 3 approaching them.

"...Jonouchi is…" Yami spoke before stopping.

"Brother is…. He's…..in the ocean….." Shizuka stammered. They all gasped, Anzu covering her mouth, horrified with tears while Honda and Otogi looked shocked.

"I'm sorry Brother….!" Shizuka sobbed. "I….I…..!" Mokuba glanced at his brother, who had what appeared to be a blank expression at first glance, but really…

Jonouchi gave up his life to save his sister…. Kaiba thought, a hidden solemn expression on his face. I'll never admit it to these fools, but I respect Jonouchi for that. And since he wouldn't want his sister to be like this, I know what I should do…

"Shizuka!" Kaiba called out to her.

"Nii-sama?" Mokuba asked.

"Seto?" Fire frowned.

"You see Jonouchi's locator cards over there?" Kaiba pointed to them. "Take them."

"Why do I feel there's some catch to this?" Honda groaned. Kaiba gave Honda a glare.

"No one asked for your opinion." Kaiba snapped before turning to face Shizuka again. "It's your choice. Take them and take your brother's place in my tournament. Or you can go home and disprove me about you being strong."
"E-Eh? Me take my brother's place?" Shizuka choked, surprised. Kaiba nodded.

"That's right." Kaiba replied. "Of course, you only got your knowledge of the game of Duel Monsters and how to play it from Marik controlling you. Regardless, what would Jonouchi want you to do?"

"What would he want me to do…?" Shizuka whispered, thinking back to Jonouchi's last words. "... Live for both of us."

"Yes. What was he doing before facing you?" Kaiba questioned. "I'll tell you. As much as I despise that fool, he's been climbing the ranks of my tournament and obtained 6 locator cards. But before that, he was a part of the Duelist Kingdom Tournament. He wanted to win that tournament to get the money necessary for your eye operation. But it appears that the operation wasn't needed due to Marik's power to fix your eyes." He turned on his heel and began to walk away, Mokuba soon following. "If you don't want those locator cards, that's fine. Just toss them into the ocean should you not take them."

Shizuka grew wide eyed, touching the corner of her eye for a moment. Fire looked at her.

"I may not have known your brother for a long time like the others here. But I admired his loyalty to not only them, but to you as well. I respect him highly even now. Both as a person and a Duelist. And I believe he would be proud and honored if you took his place." She told her. Shizuka looked over at the 6 locator cards that were in Jonouchi's place, then back at Fire.

"You think…...I should?..." Shizuka asked softly.

"It is your decision to make Shizuka-san. But I know you'll make the right call." Fire nodded.

"What do you think Yugi?" Anzu asked Yami. Yami touched his Millennium Puzzle, feeling his partner's grief of the loss of his best friend. Yet knew what he would say.

"Shizuka, you now carry the courage Jonouchi-kun left for you to live for both him and yourself. While you may carry a heavy mantle, I believe you are able to live up to it and know you won't be alone to do it." He told her.

"I won't….?" Shizuka murmured. "W-Well…...if I am to take my brother's place, I can't use this Deck." She holds up the Archlord Deck. "Since I won't be using this, I'd need a new Deck first."

"I'm sure Seto would be willing to help you on that." Fire replied.

"Kaiba? Help? I'm sorry, those 2 words don't mix." Honda scowled.

"Give him the benefit of the doubt." Fire spoke calmly. "He may be difficult, but at times like these, he does have a heart. Now come on, we should head to the location for the quarterfinals."

"Right." Yami nodded.

As Mokuba and Kaiba walked in the direction of the quarterfinals, Mokuba turned to look at his brother.

"Nii-sama, why did you do that?" Mokuba asked. Kaiba didn't look at Mokuba, nor respond right away. After a minute or so, Kaiba spoke.

"I may be cold-hearted, but even I have to admit Jonouchi's strength." Kaiba remarked. "I may despise those twerps, but I'd never wish death upon any of them. Including Jonouchi. Much to my own irritation."

"That's because you are nice even if you don't show it." Mokuba said with a small smile.

"Humph. They bring business to me, I repay them in the minorest of ways." Kaiba retorted. "And allowing Jonouchi's sister into my tournament despite her severe inexperience at Duel Monsters is the best I could do for them." He paused, then added with a chuckle. "But they shouldn't expect much from me anyway. Oh well. Not my problem if they don't appreciate my return favors."

Can't really blame them with how he acts. Mokuba thought with a sweatdrop as the 2 continued to walk through the streets towards the quarterfinals location.

Aurasoul: And that is that.

Fire: Aurasoul... What the actual!

Aurasoul: And with that I make my escape see ya everybody! *runs away*
