Gigantic Optimism Chapter I A Shallow Whirlpool
It was a small irregularity a whirlpool had appeared beneath North Reservoir Lake in the Lanayru province of Hyrule. Calling it a threat would be overstating its importance it was no harbinger of doom nor, an unwilling catalyst for evil it was a surprising yet natural occurrence and should have went unnoticed. Sidon had noticed and was swimming briskly around the figurative water wheel, indeed he had taken eight laps so far, eight laps completely unregistered by the massive Zora Prince. Being only as wide as three Octorocks and taking up a small section of the river it was not going to drown any swimmer especially not a member of the amphibious Zora race. Sidon had a shark like smile and the fin atop his head with a tail like fluke descending towards his back; was also reminiscent of that marine predator, there the similarities ended the muscular red piscine man was a vivacious personality always active even from his childhood. A time of youth and innocence from over a hundred and eighty years ago. Now in his middle ages Sidon was equivalent to a man in his forties biologically. One commonality between Sidon and this whirlpool is that so much activity made it difficult to peer into the depths to see what swam beneath.
Sidon stopped swimming outside the pull of the natural water trap, sinking beneath the surface where he observed the cyclone's true origin water currents. "It is only a whirlpool not magical or malicious" the thought was a relief to Sidon he was always vigilant at checking anomalies it was part of his job as Zora Champion a title he had inherited from his sister "Time to check on Vah Ruta a visit to Mipha's final resting place" Sidon would always think of the ancient machine as an unmarked tomb belonging to his sister Mipha even if Hyrule's population recognized it as his weapon. The swimming Zora tried not to dwell on the morbid notion he darted towards the waterfall beginning his ascent. As he climbed the waterfall leading to the Divine Beast, he recalled the trip he had made eighty years ago when he was just out of adolescence to fire against Gannon. "It feels so long ago now almost as long as it took Link to return." The oft comparison between his current doldrums and the blonde warrior's return as a reduced amnesiac had almost become a routine for Sidon the royal had no clear idea why that was the case. He realized that time had not affected the memory at all "if only that had been true for Link time took so much from him." so the mental picture came vividly to his brain interrupting the silent remark.
"Hurry I have to reach Ruta he has to be stopped!" Sidon was panicked his inner monologue reverting to calls to action and short references to his goals. "Climb!" He vaulted from the waterfall landing with nary a splash into the water now moving through the lake proper. Towards Vahruta the giant Elephant made with ancient technology repurposed to destroy Gannon. Gannon the purple energy that was coalescing into a form above Hyrule Field. The Champion or to use Sidon's name for the second generation of Champions the "Successors" those who wielded the Divine beasts against this second Calamity. Entering his sister's divine beast his fins grasped the two fishing harpoons he had personally, placed there in preparation Sidon was ready. "He returned and so soon, it does not matter." He believed that was true his next thought a declaration dispelling his subliminal doubts. "I will kill him like he killed my dear sister!" that embittered memory jarred Sidon to the present he was looking at two exact replicas of those harpoons from that first trip inside Vahruta the originals were destroyed several decades ago due to age his actual movements repeating the memory.
While the prince carries about his day his mind wanders back again as he activates the terminal to run a diagnostic. A guardian robot had been assembled it was made from discarded parts of VahRuta the purple energy knitting them together into an imposing figure on claw like legs with bladed arms. He had been surprised at its sudden rush for the terminal he had thrown the first harpoon at Gannon's marionette it had struck true he had dispatched it with his second weapon after a brief struggle. Sidon had activated the weapon and blasted at the Calamity with the elephant's destructive beam. He was the first to fire, Yunobo the rock eating Goron was the second Successor to succeed in their mission given by Link in case of the return the task of discharging a weapon within each Divine Beast entrusted to the four races that lived in the four most inhabited provinces of Hyrule. "Enough reminiscing Gannon is gone never to return never to intrude upon my life again." A resolution that allowed the Zora to patrol the beast and reattach any fallen parts. Riju the Gerudo queen the ruler of the female only warrior clan and the youngest Successor had proposed this patrol so that, no parts from the divine beasts could be corrupted against them again. She had been the last to fire her beast and had been adamant that preventive measures were taken. It had been well received counsel and was implemented at once. Teba the Rito Successor had recommended the habitual diagnostic Sidon had just finished as the bird warrior's Divine Beast had lost some power in between the two uses against Gannon and had affected the laser's charging speed.
There were no monsters, and the ancient machine was in working order, all of the Successors had taken great pride in fixing up the Divine Beasts though the task took several hours when done thoroughly. Given his longevity Sidon was the last active Successor the others having retired for various reasons years ago after training replacements. Sidon now finished with his duty returned his weapons to their proper place and began to exit the towering tomb of his sister a sadness creeping into the prince's movements. He was always sad when he left her. Sidon perceived a loud yell coming from the waterfall the actual source of the sound a dark green female, Zora guard crested the water and waved at Sidon. Zora pigmentation was as varied as the colorization of the fish the species resembled. "Sire the king desires an audience." Two things struck Sidon first the military precision of the messenger from the Zora guards discipline was intact among its' ranks after so long a period of peace. Secondly, he was glad they had stopped saying Sir Sidon as he had asked it just never sounded serious to the easygoing Zora Prince. "I will see King Dorephan in his rooms at once" promised Sidon as was his custom with the guards. "His Majesty is in the plaza…he awaits by the statue." That was unusual hence the guard's slight pause. While Sidon visited the statue of Mipha every night, his father never did it had been too painful emotionally for the king and now it was painful for his father physically. Father was growing old soon he would be too old to rule. "Ready Sire?" "Of course, let us be off!" beamed the prince flashing the toothy grin that won him so many admirers among his female subjects. His concerns buried until he saw his father. As they passed the whirlpool it was beginning to slow and would soon be gone the cycle had been broken.
Author's Note Two
I plan to update weekly on Wednesdays I have several chapters written and was planning on weekly updates once I had written everything but, I could use some motivation to push past writer's block. I am not sure what the demand is for a Sidon focused fan fiction but I wanted to write one. Thank you for reading.
