Gigantic Optimism Chapter X Outside Gerudo City

A weekend five years later.

"Bacta!" I was going to start your, history class without you" winks the Queen "They translated it!" pleased that Bacta guessed why she was here, Riju smiles she still tested the Champion from time to time hence a vague summons. Still as spry and sharp as ever both the champion and queen are confident that Riju can rule for capably for quite some time. Bacta is going to the desk lifting the translation of the Gerudo history ready to read for her grandmother. The secondary reason she was here is because Riju hates her reading spectacles, She constantly "loses them". "Before we begin Grandma I know that Karlovaa is due at the ancient tech laboratory this morning she made good time." Sighing Riju expresses her relief, "Excellent that is a long trip and Purah was pretty sick when Link passed, we do not need a relapse to occur before she gets there. Nice of her to agree to the experiment she impressed me at Link's funeral I knew she would brave the danger to help" "Can I make a suggestion before we begin Grandma? Receiving a nod she continues "how about we go out to Naboris I can inspect her when we need a respite and we can make an outing of it. Only if you feel well enough to travel." We have waited five years what is a hour or so, and of course I can travel."

The Balad of the first Gerudo The Legend of Groose

The Demon Lord Demise cursed the two who defeated him that his hatred would always manifest itself to destroy them while forming this threat his servant Lord Ghirahim told him of a third who had aided the heroes by constructing weapons but never did he confront Demise directly. He is also cursed that hero grew older and married he died happily never knowing his curse. He had many daughters seeing the need for knights like those from his home above Hyrule. He trains his daughters in warfare some are mechanically gifted they leave hyrule and the hero's daughters who remain are driven out seen as a private army. Banding together they went into hiding in the desert years pass and they become bandits out of need their gifts lying only in war they spare victims whenever possible and only take husbands from willing Hylian captives but these men are selfish greedy they were raised to despise these women or had heard of the raiding parties. Some do teach trades before abandoning their families. Soon the custom is to never bring the men into the land this keeps the civilization hidden. These daughters of Groose retain his likeness red-hair tall in stature, but with dark skin from their desert home, never do they have male children. Untill five score years have come and gone, then they are at war when a boy is born.

…..

The sun is slowly cooking the desert floor, the heat is oppressive a shimmer coming off the sand, directly underneath Vah Naboris in the largest shade in that wasteland her voice becoming scratchy Bacta ends the first two pages "Rest have some tea and some courser bee honey for that voice, granddaughter, we can resume after you attend to Naboriss and I pack up these supplies. That is an order." Gingerly taking the packet she trades the suggested voice treatment for the document the queen adds a note to the passage Title this stanza the Legend of Groose.

"Her lab has to be on the opposite side of the Kingdom." Groans Karlovaa, stomping through the underbrush: or the now light footed Gerudo's best approximation of stomping, not because of the journey that had been fun up to now, discounting the monster attack when they first entered the Akala region. They had been accosted by such a small band of bokoblins it had impeded their trip little. Batma had abandoned her. Wishing to move to Tarry town and retire the breeder had accompanied the would be test subject on the week long odyssey across Hyrule except for today. Now her friend lives on the opposite coast. Even Rito correspondence would be difficult. "How am I going to get out of this rut now. I can only win one race his race somehow he never allows me to lose it." Disentangling her green tunic from some type of thorny bush she presses on. Public perception had turned on the champion cup, it is now the most boring race on the schedule Karlovaa always wins it and they hate her for it. No signs are in the stands now, the crowd had cheered when a rookie driver had crashed into her during the rally this year. "This break will do it I can come back and win the cup of the Seven at last." A loud noise gets her attention it is a rich baritone. She keeps moving stopping when she comprehends the song lyrics.

"Oh I met her once outside Gerudo city her sword hung low and her skin glows in the sun

As I sat there far outside Gerudo city her words cut my heart and we are apart 'n I am one

She hit me hard outside Gerudo city my arm is numb, my beloved is gone I now wait for no one. Oh bury me there outside Gerudo city for love I am dumb, I hope you see my effigy n learn to be unlike meee

And leave well enough alone"

….

Sidon chortles as he finishes the song "Alquis was right that song is too goofy to not smile." The jaunty tune had been the fisherman's theme after a Gerudo woman had arrived in town the night before when some annoyed patrons at the hotel bar had complained he bellowed "You insulting the captains favorite song!" no one else had griped thus the song is firmly lodged in Sidon's head he had left for East Akala stable shortly after the argument with Alquis. The other constant nag in the Prince's head is "How can I finish Dorado's weapon training?" Sidon needs to move on to tactics and for that field experience would work best but the trident style of his apprentice was not quite ready for multiple adversaries. Swinging the weapon nonchalantly in one hand is beyond the strength of Dorado. "How can I teach him a new method?" Another distraction appears as he crests a small slope a Gerudo one he recognizes right away.

"Sa'vaaq Karlovaa." Ecstatically he approaches the vai arms pumping as he closes the distance when he stops moving a finger begins to tap the beat to Outside Gerudo City "There are no graves outside the city you know Sidon." "I would not know having never been there. Looking down the slightly embarrassed Karlovaa realizes of course he had not visited the city men were forbidden hence the song. "So how was my singing?" "It was fine" they start up towards the lab Sidon occasionally helping her. "Why are you way out here I doubt you have a race." Sweeping a stray hair out of her face, she assents, "No I am here as the official Gerudo test subject. By Riju's decree." "Me too well the Zora one. Purah asked for me specifically something about a large test subject." The conversation is harder this time she seems glum she is barely looking at me thinks Sidon. Sensing his discomfort, she blurts out a random question to break the silence "Would you wait outside Gerudo city?" They are at the foot of the hill where the lab stands, before he turns and says, "Not if you want to be left alone." Darting away the hyperactive zora runs up to the lab. Temporarily separated the companions by happenstance forget their struggles.

Baz and Reypha are outside the royal chamber dealing with an irate Castle Town official, more accurately Baz is watching his junior officer handle the pettifoggery Hylian Minister of Water Management "Now sir the king is a very busy ruler I am sure he did not mean to keep you and your assistants waiting his last meeting may have went long." The official tries to peer into the throne room rising on his tip toes to verify the lady's statement that there was a meeting going on. " The water level in the dam is too low I need the king's permission to use the rain feature on Ruta." Narrowing his eyes Baz steps in to the verbal fray due to a near screech from the official and the lack of respect in refusing to use the sacred weapon's full title while attempting to sneak past a guard. "Unfortunately, Prince Sidon is away on a mission for Purah he is not due back till tomorrow. No one can enter Divine Beast Vah Ruta" "I see" turning quickly to his lackeys he raises an eyebrow imploring his sheikah tech expert to contradict the captain. Reypha again deploys her ingratiating manner honed by working at her father's eatery. "Because of this inconvenience we can reschedule for tomorrow when his highness returns. You three look exhausted it is almost lunch I know a restaurant that has the best fish in the domain! You might as well enjoy yourselves on this official trip." "How long till the pompous idiot realizes that the royal coffer will cover his expenses while he waits for this meeting?" Reypha asks herself just before she decides to drop another hint the minister's countenance brightens "Urr yes we were so busy we had forgotten to eat where is this place you mentioned. If it is taken care of tomorrow rescheduling is suitable." Waving his hand in a gracious manner the minister attempts to sweep away the previous hostility. Baz chuckles inwardly at the change of mood glad his fellow guard had diffused the situation well. "No, formal complaint this time I wager. And Reypha's dad gets some well paying customers." Once he had realized Reypha was on good terms with the future champion Baz had apologized for the unneeded transfer and put her back on palace detail she now spends a lot of time guarding the main entrance for scenes like this one.

"Finally, their gone, the nerve trying to see if I was lying." Several small pops followed this pent up remark as she rolled her shoulders in annoyance popping them in the process. "You did lie his last meeting was over an hour ago." "Correction I said it may have went long anything may happen. Besides no one gets in without his Highnesse's authorization." Smirks the young zora Baz looks in on the King, Dorephan is on his throne fast asleep. "Sidon needs to take over Dorephan cannot do this much longer." Baz unsure how to wake up the king without entering unauthorized breaks into a loud rendition of Outside Gerudo City having learned the song in Tarry Town. Humming along Reypha is reminscing back on her time on the Gentle Breeze. Dorephan jars awake "who is making that infernal racket."

While Sidon waits for his Gerudo companion Dorado is tending to Mendo's Market waiting on his own Gerudo. The new arrival is looking to add to her barely furnished apartment she had purchased, Grante's shack it was owned by the city rather than Orson construction thus the name on the lease did not have to end in son. "I want straw young man do you have a straw bed?" "Yes, mam right this way." Whille the obviously soldierly woman inspects the bed Dorado wishes his parents had watched the shop today, he feels unproductive minding the store instead of training. "You normally in here by yourself Mendo" Pulling up the bedsheet in front of her face the senior sneakily hides her sardonic smirk well aware this is not Mendo. "Mendo is my dad he took mom out, they actually do not do it very often." Replacing the sheet Batma addresses the zora again "Good for them Junior. I will take it" The zora's face regains its usual hue the red leaving quickly now that the breeder's sarcasm is evident. As he receives payment his thoughts turn to Sidon sure the prince is enjoying a new experience assisting with an experiment. The two move on to discussing the logistics of delivering the bed as two more customers enter. Their excitement doing a poor job of concealing their status as tourists. The one Dorado correctly presumes husband is finishing up a monalouge to his wife.

"Hopefully the village is still there when we get back, hon it is only a matter of time before that mad scientist blows it up." "If it was unsafe do you really think the champion would have lived there," What she was going to say is obliterated by the following soliloquy "He is why it has been so much worse lately she never pulled anything when he was alive, There was no sonic wave that blew out the windows, no thick smoke ruining the village air, my grandfather is just glad that by some miracle the village was not turned into a toddler settlement when that Purah women experimented on herself with youth rays in his day. Today she starts human trials Sherry, human trials! "Oh, Finley I forgot my rupees in the saddle bag dear, go fetch them will you." Once her spouse is safely outside sorry, I have to get him away on lab days his grandfather tried to scare him one too many times with stories about the place. When I heard about the time of experiment we packed up and hit the trail" Dorado did not have the heart to tell her that because the testing would be at the Ancient Tech Laboratory, they had wandered closer to their least favorite scientist. "Ooh." Pursing her lips she spots How to see Hyrule; the Travelers handbook "That would be perfect I think next time I need to get him a little farther away." Dorado dazedly registers the potential sale "She, did not really almost turn the village into toddlers, did she?" Dorodo is becoming increasingly concerned for his mentor, Batma buts in,"No but there is a reason I did not accompany my friend to the lab today. Nor did I retire to Hateno village."This time the sardonic smile is plainly on display.

Inside the lab is clean though one corner is full of separate weapons displays, There a sheikah in his ninties is reordering the display. A yellow feathered, Rito woman with purple highlights is also present. Sidon was expecting a Goron seemingly none had volunteered for the project. "A Goron's affable roll with the punches attitude could help lighten the mood. "Master Grante I presume how are the weapon studies that is quite the collection." "The work is going well, I just wish Link had kept the Light Bow replicating a weapon that only targets evil it would be the best weapon ever crafted. Since that opportunity is lost I spend most my time on weapon fragments reconstructing weapons lost to time." Before Sidon can enthrall his audience with tales of Tarrey Town an old woman wearing thick glasses enters from a side exterior door. "Perfect you all made it!" feebly clapping her hands she urges the group closer. "This experiment is based on the scanning rune the towers employ to map Hyrule's physical locations by creating a rig in the actual sheikah slate I could present models of individual objects. "Yes but not organic substances the towers only permanently registered geography any organic data was temporarily stored." That is correct Grante, after a lot of work organic models became feasible, today's experiment is can we change the physical characteristics of the models while maintaining some genetic material." "Why are we here surely you can test it on any life form." Anxious to get the experiment under way Karlovaa had voiced this concern. "Excellent point, if I did not need original scans to build subsequent models on, because I do you three will be the default setting for your race. After an initial scan of this group upon a second round you will all be able to see what you would look like as the other races. any questions?" Arli the Rito chirps up quietly "Not all of us Dr. Purah there are no male Gerudo. "With a lackadaisical expression Karlovaa corrects her "There are no male Gerudo now for there has not been a male born to the tribe since our great city was founded. Long ago before we settled there are accounts of Gerudo Kings." Purah ends the conversation with her usual style. "Aw yeah let's do it!" Purah flashed up a peace sign a constant gesture no matter how old she gets. Leaving Grante to give instructions including that the subjects would control who apart from the research team could see the models. she exits the room.

The Rito goes first Karlovaa and Grante chat while Purah conducts the first round of testing Sidon mesmerized by the Experiment wonders about the implications. Karlovaa gently pulls him aside "You seem worried Sidon." Frowning the Prince explains "Not exactly, more contemplative I just wish Link had seen it, I have always wondered what he would look like as a Zora." An odd expression came over Karlovaa's face it was familiar to Sidon's it dissipates as the vai talks, "He would have loved this he is one of the few that has all of Hyrule and was connected to every race" Tapping the speaker a on the shoulder with a an assistant with a bandaged hand takes the Gerudo back. Feeling better Sidon saunters around the room his version of patiently waiting. After a brief lap or two the assistant returns, "I will help this succeed to the best of my ability." Hyping himself up, Sidon the last test subject enter the room containing the sheikah slate.

A large monitor dominates the room adjacent to the viewing screen is a sheikah slate terminal, lastly there is a dish on the floor of the room next to a dais resembling a tower. The assistant attaches a small brown transmitter to the fidgeting Sidon. "Mount the dais and we can commence." Gingerly Sidon does so optimistic that it can handle his weight. "Starting scan now." The head researchers, voice issues out of the transmitter. Sidon gives a peace sign not seeing Purah. A slight whiring noise and the process is over the assistant is now checking Sidon for any adverse effects observing none he is dismissed. Purah seemingly appears attempting to ease her guests, "who is hungry the models should construct automatically."

There is no voltfin at the table to Sidon's relief they enjoy a delightful meal Arli telling an ancient Rito tale involving a dragon. Karlovaa catching Sidon's gaze leaves the table he follows his friend. Leaning up towards the champion she pleads "Sidon please let me see your results, It could be my only chance to see a Gerudo voe." Meaning to go on she takes a breath and begins to gesture emphatically. Sidon holds her hands in his own breaking contact once the gentle touch causes her to cease talking. "Of course! this is a unique opportunity, in fact if possible, You can take copies to Riju perhaps the Gerudo royals should keep a record." Smiling they Return to the others the vai realizes he never asked for a return favor or even let her finish before agreeing.
