Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: Love & Adventures
Breakfast at the new Grant Home was full of cheer and joy.
Cheer from the events of last night as both Archie and William were still riding high on meeting the famous pitchers, Bill Bailey and Bernie Boland, as well as now owning autographed baseballs, which had been presented to all.
Joy because these two families were coming together as one family upon the union of their beloved children.
It also didn't hurt that they were getting to fawn over their grandchildren, as they joyously prepared for the coming momentous event.
This morning Godfrey had assisted Madelyne in making scrambled eggs and frying country ham. She had also insisted on making Creamed Peas, along with Fried Apples, but the very idea left Godfrey aghast.
"They are a Family Breakfast Staple in the Grant household, and you will love both!"
Enough said.
Godfrey had learned one did not contradict Nathan's Mother on any account. The woman was naturally a take-charge person. But he couldn't help loving her as it was always done in a motherly way!
Yes, Godfrey and Madelyne were an unlikely pair. But each had grown attached to the other, and they made a really great team!
Though today, Madelyne shooed him out of the way when she started the biscuits. They had to be just right, so Godfrey busied himself with setting the table and pouring the juices.
As the family filed in, they seated themselves at the long kitchen table with a huge bouquet of wildflowers in the center, that Allie had picked.
Elizabeth glanced at Nathan to do the honors, but he felt that this time he needed to pass the honor on to his Father, which made Elizabeth smile.
"Dad, would you do the honor of saying Grace for us?"
Archie raised his head with a quizzical expression, surprised, but very pleased at the request.
Elizabeth shushed her chattering Son and everyone gathered hands, as the Thatchers had quickly learned was a custom at meals.
It was a tradition that had always been present for the elder and younger soon-to-be Grants. But one missing from the Thatcher Household, as perhaps there had been too much space between them at their massive Dining Table for anything other than William leading in Prayer.
But having experienced the tradition with her Grandchildren, Grace was determined to start the tradition at her own Home. She'd just have Godfrey move her chair closer to her Husband!
"Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we thank you for your presence. We ask that you bless this bountiful food before us, as well as those who prepared it, for our nourishment and those partaking of it. We ask that you help us have open hearts to spread your perfect love to those who come across our path. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this most precious time we have together as Family. Bless us, we pray. In your Holy Name, Amen."
Nathan's heart was touched, as the prayers of his Father from childhood came flooding over him. Before his troubles, his Father had been a good and righteous man, and that was what Nathan needed to always remember.
He smiled at his Father, and he could see the peace come over him.
They were healing and now on a brand new path, a most positive one full of love and hope.
"Madelyne, the eggs are delicious. Better than Cook's, I must say!" thundered William.
"Darling, don't ever say that in front of Cook. But Madelyne, he's right. These are delicious. Did you add herbs?"
"Yes, just a little thyme, along with a few chives and parsley. Makes all the difference! Oh, and add a bit of melted butter when you start to scramble them, and then again at the very end. There, you have all my egg secrets!"
"I'll have to remember to do that!" sighed Elizabeth, who was trying to learn everything she could from Madelyne. "I need to start a Cooking Journal and write all this down!"
"Sweetheart, don't be afraid to experiment. You may come up with something much better than mine!"
"I highly doubt that!" frowned Elizabeth.
"That's good advice, Dear!" piped in Grace. "Try new things. Makes life exciting!"
"Then my Darling Grace, how come we do the same thing over and over?" asked a befuddled William.
"Just you wait, Godfrey and I have all sorts of surprises waiting for you!" and Grace actually winked at her husband, who quickly smiled and winked back.
"Godfrey, how are the peas and the apples?" asked Madelyne.
"Quite delectable, Mam!" as he lifted another forkful of creamed peas to his mouth.
"And that's a very high compliment coming from Godfrey!" interjected Grace. "I've never had either for breakfast before, but they truly complement the eggs."
Nathan laughed, "It wasn't breakfast for Colleen and me if we didn't have the works!"
"And Sausages!" laughed Archie.
"Oh yes, I must have cooked a million Sausages for those two. Ate them as soon as I sat them on the table! They never left a single one for Archie or me," she smiled remembering.
"Had to eat mine when we ate out, which wasn't often I might add. But for obvious reasons, Sausage was always my pick!"
Nathan blushed guiltily, "Honestly, I think Colleen ate more of them than me!"
"Let's just say it was pretty even," replied Archie, with Madelyne agreeing.
"Grandma, did Mama especially like any other foods?" asked Allie.
"She loved Corn and Fish. Those were her two favorites. I had to learn to fix Corn a lot of different ways because she was always asking for it. And her Fish had to be fresh from the lake! Of course, she never learned to clean it or fry it – left that up to your Dad and me!"
"I can fry Fish perfectly. Dad taught me!" Allie announced proudly. "I love Corn too!"
"See, it must be genetic!" offered Archie with a smile. "Speaking of fish, what time are we planning to leave today?"
"I'm ready as soon as we can! Godfrey, are you coming with us?" asked William.
"Perhaps it would be best if I stayed to look after the Ladies, Sir!"
"Oh, of course, very nice of you to offer!"
"Well, I can tell you all are excited about your trip, so why don't you leave just after Church? We'll pack you a lunch!" suggested Elizabeth.
Nathan's face was crestfallen, as he had hoped to have lunch with Elizabeth.
But he was outvoted.
"Just after Church, it is! We'll have to let Bill and Anthony know," he relented, with a forlorn smile to Elizabeth. "Nathaniel is going to meet us there later in the afternoon. He had a previous lunch obligation."
After much to do getting everyone dressed in their finest, the Grants, Thatchers, and Thorntons headed to Church.
The regular Pastor was out of town, and after much urging from Nathan, who had found out he had previously been a pastor, Trevon finally agreed to lead the service.
Nathan escorted Elizabeth to the front seat with their parents and children, both of whom were happy to sit with their Grandmothers, as they filled the front seats on both sides of the sanctuary.
Nathan took Elizabeth's hand as their eyes met, both realizing this was the last Service they would attend together being engaged.
Both squeezed the other's hand, and it was as though electricity passed between them.
As his daughter played the piano, Trevon walked down the aisle from the entrance, where he had stood welcoming everyone to Sunday Service.
He reached the podium in his robe and stole, with a commanding presence, and stood silently looking out over his congregation.
Then he began the Service…
"Please stand for Opening Prayer…"
"Dear Father, we come together on this Holy Day to celebrate and worship You. We ask that you direct us and feed us your Word, so that we might be better Christians, opening our hearts to your Glory. For the many blessings You give us, we thank You and praise Your Holy Name. And all the people said…"
There was a rousing chorus of hearty "Amens" and the congregation was seated.
"For today's Scripture, please turn to the Book of First Corinthians, Chapter Thirteen."
Elizabeth was startled. That had been the very scripture she and Jack had used at their Wedding. She had pointedly stayed away from those words for her coming Wedding, because of that. But Trevon couldn't possibly know that.
Nathan noticed her unrest, so he placed his arm around her and held her hand tighter.
Somehow, he knew, and he prayed that God would help her. That Jack would help her.
As Nathan silently prayed, Elizabeth's look of consternation slowly faded, and Jack came to her.
"Everything is the way it should be, Elizabeth. Our Love Chapter is also yours and Nathan's. Don't ever forget that. God's Love and Word are for us all. As is Life, Elizabeth."
Her mouth fell open, but she never let go of Nathan's hand or even loosened her grip, as the words of the Scripture poured over her along with Jack's words. She thought it was only hers and Jack's scripture, but with a painful jab to her heart, she realized she was segmenting and she had to open fully to Nathan, holding nothing back. First Corinthians, Chapter Thirteen applied to them too. Just as it had to her and Jack.
She looked up at Nathan, with pure love in her eyes, and he knew his prayers had been answered.
No words were needed as they seldom were between these two, but she edged closer to him wrapped in his arm, and she placed her hand on his leg, knowing they were about to become one in every way.
And finally, there was peace.
"Perhaps you may wonder why I chose this Scripture, this particular sermon. I can only tell you it was required of me, for what reason, I know not. But I do know Love is our glue, Love propels us forward into a blessed life, a God-centered life, the richest life of all."
"May you go in love and peace after our Benediction. But first a most important announcement. It is my honor to invite each of you to the Marriage of our own Chief Inspector and Mrs. Elizabeth Thornton, this Saturday at their Lodge. May God bless them on their life's journey. Shall we stand and pray?"
Somewhere in her scattered thoughts, Elizabeth knew there had been a hymn, but she couldn't remember a single word of it. God had otherwise occupied her mind, so He could heal her still troubled soul and she was whole again, filled with joy replacing her bit of sadness that had been left by a marriage cut too short, a love that would stay with her till her dying day, as well as a new love that she now knew, would always do the same.
It was meant to be.
And it was as though God and Jack himself were telling her this was always meant to be, even before she was born.
She would be a better Wife to her new Husband, because of the loss she had gone through.
And it dawned on her also because of the losses he had gone through, that Nathan would be a better Husband.
For whatever reasons they were made for each other.
And there would be no holding back, no secrets between them.
They were truly blessed.
William had been riding throughout his stay In Hope Valley, in preparation for his Fishing Trip, and he had excelled with Nathan's tutelage, even growing to enjoy it.
"You know, Nathan, I think I'm going to have to take time to visit our stables in Hamilton. I must admit, it's been years since I've ridden. And we really do have some beauties. Perhaps we will ride together when you visit! I've really enjoyed the lessons!"
"I'd love that, William. Looking forward to it!"
Lord Anthony Townsend was quite an expert horseman, as he was used to riding for his Grand Fox Hunts, which garnered the Upper Crust of Society including Royalty, from many miles around.
"You're an expert, Anthony!" and just like that Nathan and his future Brother-in-Law had found a common interest which would sted them well in the coming years.
Archie was an old hand at riding, but to ride with his Son was everything.
Just after they'd changed from their Dress clothes to their Cowboy clothes, the four of them met Bill at the Livery and prepared their horses.
At the last minute, Aaron rushed in to join them.
"I finished rounds early this morning and a trainee is coming tomorrow. I left detailed instructions for morning rounds, so everything should be fine. You all, I need a break!"
"If I'm not interfering, that is?" he asked hopefully.
"Absolutely not! Excited for you to join us, Aaron!" assured Nathan. "Nathaniel's going to meet us at the Lake."
The men finished preparing their horses and were just about ready to leave when Elizabeth came rushing into the Livery.
"Here are your lunches. We fixed extra just in case!"
"Good, Darling. Aaron's joining us too!"
The men took their lunches and glanced at each other, deciding to exit the livery with their horses, giving Elizabeth some private time with Nathan.
"That was subtle," Nathan laughed. "But I'm not complaining, Love!"
"Nathan, Father has been looking forward to this more than anything I can remember. Thank you for doing this."
"The hardest part is leaving you! But I'll see that everyone has a good time!"
"Nathan, I need to tell you something."
He reached to wrap her in his arms.
"You know you can tell me anything," he whispered hoarsely in her ear, as he smelled the scent of White Lilies and Lavender in her hair.
"There's no part hanging back. I understand you are my present and future, and I won't hold back anything. I don't know exactly how, but I understand it now. I think it took both God and Jack to make me see. The scripture Jack and I used at our Wedding? It's ours too. Everything is ours. I'm yours fully."
There were tears in her eyes and he gently wiped them.
"No holding back, Lisabeth, for either of us."
And he kissed her to let her know he meant it.
"I'm going to miss you so much!" he said. "You have no idea how much."
"Same, my Darling. Just have fun. I'm counting hours instead of days now."
He laughed, "Me too!"
They kissed again, this time to say goodbye, and she walked with him arm in arm as they led Newton outside.
Nathan gave her one last kiss, and mounted Newton, tipped his Cowboy hat, and turned, waving to her as the group rode away.
He'd remember her smile.
And she would remember his.
It was now six days.
Or less than 144 hours.
As Nathan led the men to the lodge, he was surprised to see tendrils of smoke coming from the old cabin.
He glanced at Aaron and Bill, who both followed his eyes and knew something was up.
"Stay back here, we need to check something out," he ordered Archie, William, and Anthony.
Nathan, Bill, and Aaron rode on to the cabin, guns drawn.
None of the three were wearing any type of uniform.
They dismounted and crouched close to the cabin's door, still not hearing anything at all.
But their prey was experienced and knew not to give himself away.
He stealthily moved to the back window of the cabin, not knowing the three men outside had scattered to cover the main windows, as well as the front door.
By the time he quickly figured that out, he decided instead, to exit with dignity, knowing to place his hands high.
He walked proudly straight out the front door, not knowing who or what he would face.
However, he did know one thing, he would survive.
His survival skills were unrivaled.
He was Northern Blackfoot, which meant he was one with nature, and he spoke Kainai.
"Oki," he firmly and proudly stated.
"Oki," responded Nathan tentatively.
He knew it meant welcome, but this was his cabin, not the man's who stood before him.
Bill heard the welcome and came around to the front door, where he couldn't believe his eyes.
"Well, I'll be, George! What are you doing here?" asked Bill bluntly and pointedly as he put his gun away.
Nathan and Aaron did the same.
"Good to see you, Judge Avery," the man responded solemnly with a quiver of a starting smile he was trying to control.
"Gentlemen, this is George Flying Eagle. We go way back. And yes, he speaks English fluently. What are you doing here, George? You know you're on private property."
"It is beautiful property. I saw the sign on the Cabin and I took up residence."
Bill glanced at Nathan, who nodded yes, he had put up a sign saying it could be used in an emergency in hopes of keeping the main Lodge secure.
"Well, I'm sure it was offered in an emergency, not as a permanent residence. For the record, this is the man who owns it, Chief Inspector Nathan Grant and our friend Constable Aaron Latham. What have you done to the place? Care to share?"
"It's in better condition than when I arrived. I've cleaned and livened it up."
"Livened it up?" snarled Bill.
George Flying Eagle smiled and shifted to the side to direct the men into what was now his abode.
Nathan did a quick once-through and nodded that everything was there.
The men were also surprised to see that the entire Cabin was indeed spotless and yes, indeed "livened up." There was a big black dog sleeping on the hearth and a kettle starting to sing on the stove. Driftwood had been spread throughout, along with several carved into bowls that held an assortment of nuts George had gathered from the land.
George had also hung various Indian artifacts that were his prized possessions throughout the Cabin, and he seemed totally at home, even a little nervous, that he was about to be evicted.
Nathan took the lead.
"George, if I may call you that?"
"Of course, Chief Inspector Grant."
"Can you tell me how you know the Judge?"
"Many years ago, my family was hungry and although not proud of it, I stole. It was a barren year and our garden gave forth no life. I stole food and medicine because I had to. My daughter was ill. And the Judge, then an inspector caught me."
George glanced at Bill to know whether or not he should tell the full story. Bill nodded.
"I thought he was going to arrest me, but instead, after I told him my story, he helped me gather what was needed and visited us to see how else he could help. Because of that kindness, I never stole again. And I am very ashamed I ever did. But everything was returned in time, and God has blessed me through all the trials, to give me a brighter day, one of peace."
"Where is your family?" asked Nathan.
"Massacred by an enemy tribe. I am the only one left."
Nathan winced.
"I'm so sorry, George. So very sorry."
"It was just after I stole that it happened. My daughter, Sunshine, was responding to the medicine we brought her, but it was for naught."
Bill looked at Nathan and saw the pain in his eyes. He was re-living the loss of his own beloved Sister.
"I can pack and leave tomorrow."
Nathan studied George very carefully.
"Our sermon today was about showing love to those who come across our path. Perhaps we can work out an arrangement. Would you be interested in safeguarding the Lodge and its grounds? As a caretaker of sorts? In exchange for living here?"
"Most assuredly. I would be most humbled and grateful. I know it's not mine. But this feels more like home to me than any place I've been. And I will care for it well."
Both men were studying each other with their eyes, firmly directed at the other.
"May I ask you why you didn't move into the Lodge?"
"There was no sign saying I could," he replied simply. "This cabin is quite large for me and nicer than anything I've had in my lifetime. It is more than adequate. It is a mansion."
"I have to discuss this with my future Wife, but she has a kind heart. I think it will go well. I should warn you. We're hosting our Wedding here next Saturday, so there will be all sorts of commotion and visitors throughout the week. But for today, how about you come fishing with us?"
George actually smiled, "My kind of fishing or yours?"
"How about both?" laughed Nathan. "You teach me and I'll teach you!"
"An honor, Sir!" and George extended his hand to Chief Inspector Grant, hopefully, his new Landlord.
The four men exited the Cabin and headed toward the rest of the waiting group.
Anthony was visibly nervous when he realized he was standing directly in front of a native Indian.
"George, this is my Father, Archie Grant, my soon-to-be Father-in-Law, William Thatcher, and my soon-to-be Brother-in-Law, Lord Anthony Townsend from Great Britain. Gentlemen, this is George Flying Eagle, and we're in for a treat. Because as I teach you to fish, he's going to also teach all of us how to fish his way!"
The men came up one by one to shake George's hand.
"This is more exciting than I imagined it could be!" stated a confounded Anthony. "I really am in the Wild West and it's stunning!"
The men laughed together as they got their bags to take to the Lodge.
"I'll take care of the horses. You gentlemen get settled," offered George, as the horses nestled to him.
"Thank you, George. Come in with us when you're through. We'll have some lunch! There's plenty of food." offered Nathan.
George nodded, thinking 'This is a man every bit as kind as Judge Avery' and feeling like there just might be a chance he was really home.
"This is paradise, Nathan! Pure paradise," said William enthusiastically. "I've never seen a nicer Lodge!"
He had covered every inch of the Lodge, along with Archie, and both seemed to be mesmerized by the rustic home.
"Son, you did a beautiful job building this," complemented Archie.
"You built this?" asked a shocked William.
"Well, yes, but I had a lot of help."
"Don't let him fool you, the bulk of it was your new Son-in-Law! We just did as we were told!" laughed Bill.
"I can see my Daughter is going to be in very good hands. But Nathan, Grace and I may have to visit a lot more often just to experience this beautiful Lodge, as well as that breathtaking lake and surrounding land!"
"You're welcome any time, Sir! It's totally for Family to use." smiled Nathan and William could tell he meant it.
"Now what kind of fish are in that lake?" asked William.
There was a knock at the door.
"Come in," Nathan called, thinking it was George, but it was Nathaniel instead.
"Now, there's the gentleman that knows how to answer that question even better than I do!"
"Hello everyone. Got through earlier than I expected. Who's living in our Cabin?" asked a concerned Nathaniel.
"It's a long story, but you'll meet him in a few minutes!" explained Nathan.
"Well, about the fish? You name it, they're in that lake. I kept all my lakes well-stocked in addition to what nature put there. Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, Black Crappie, and even Largemouth Bass to give you a better idea!"
"I for one, am raring to go!" exclaimed William who was having trouble controlling his excitement.
At that moment, there was a tap on the door and Nathan went to let George in.
"Nathaniel Helmsley, this is George Flying Eagle. George, this is Nathaniel Helmsley and you won't meet a better man."
Nathaniel came to shake George's hand and officially welcome him, even without knowing what the full situation was.
George was impressed and seemed to relax a bit, now that he could put a name with every face present.
"George, the food's on the table. Grab a plate and help yourself. There's beer and ginger ale in the fridge," directed Nathan.
George nodded, and Aaron went back to telling his Wild West tale, which everyone was avidly listening to.
But George heard Rip growling a low growl, and he knew Rip didn't do that unless there was a reason, so he slipped out the side door to assess what was going on without even being noticed.
He could feel it.
Someone was there. But where?
He stayed hidden to see exactly what was going on, and then it was clear, a rough-looking man was kicking at Rip, and Rip was giving him what for.
George stayed hidden and watched the man pull his gun as he walked up the front porch steps.
As the interloper opened the door and pointed his gun at the group of men inside, George lunged at him from behind and very quickly wrestled the gun from his hand.
By this time, Nathan, Aaron, and Bill, all three had their guns pulled, and went to assist George, although, apparently, he didn't need it as the gunman was still in a stronghold.
"Thank you, George. You just might have saved our lives."
Then Nathan directed his gaze at the stranger.
"I'm Chief Inspector Grant, this is Constable Latham and Judge Avery. What can we do to help you?" he asked with a sarcastic voice and tone.
He then picked up the man's gun.
But this time the stranger's face was ashen.
"Yes, I'd say you stepped right into this one. And for you, I'd say it's a nightmare. Who are you and why did you have your gun drawn on us?"
The man was silent.
Nathan didn't even raise his voice, but if it had been sarcastic before, it was now seriously low and like steel.
"I suggest you answer, Sir, or you'll live to regret it. Now tell me what you were planning to do with that gun."
"Looks like a pretty nice place. I wasn't going to hurt you."
"What exactly were you going to do?"
"Rob you."
"What is your name?"
"Calvin Trancie."
"Well, Mr. Trancie, you are officially under arrest for attempted robbery and the brandishing of a firearm with ill intent against seven people, three of whom are Law Enforcement," and as Nathan continued the arrest, Aaron handcuffed the man.
"Nathan, I'll take him to jail," offered Aaron.
"Wait, it's closer to go in Nathaniel's direction and leave him there. Then you can make it back in time to fish!"
"Brilliant. Wasn't looking forward to missing my fishing. That was gonna put me in a really bad mood," he hissed at Mr. Taylor. "I don't like it, but you're coming with me."
"Well, is it always this exciting in the Wild West?" asked Anthony, wide-eyed.
"Pretty much," retorted Bill dryly.
While Aaron transported Mr. Trancie to the closest jail cell, Nathan took the men to the dock and showed them how to hook their bate, make a fluid cast as well as some other basics.
Anthony had never fished before and Archie and William were very rusty.
But Nathan, Nathaniel, and George were pros, and even Bill knew how to fish although it had been a while since he had actually done it.
All in all, the novices were in good hands.
The weather was perfect for fishing.
Lake Granda's crystal, but deep blue waters were strikingly calm and in a low, almost motionless lull.
Flopping freckled trout provided the only movement, as they slapped the water's surface. Some even leapt up to catch flies, making a loud plopping noise almost musical in nature, as they thunked back to the fluid depths of their home.
It was an amazing sight to behold and quite the welcome to these Fishermen who stood transfixed at the site.
Perfect day, perfect fishing conditions.
"Anthony, you might want to back away from the edge. The water's really deep," warned Nathan.
"Got it!" and he scooted back.
But as soon as Nathan looked away to help William straighten his line, Anthony was "practicing" his casting, positioned backward no less, and as he thrust the line over his head, his body followed and he just kept going, moving closer and closer to the edge without even realizing it, until all that was left of him was a loud splash in the water!
Along with those freckled trout!
"Oh no, he can't swim!" yelled William.
He knew this because Anthony refused to get anywhere near the Thatcher's pool.
Nathan jerked off his shirt and dove in, immediately swimming to his quest, but Anthony was terrified and kept flailing about, pushing Nathan further away each time he got close.
George saw what was happening, and dove in to help without even thinking about it.
"Anthony, stay calm. Stop moving. We won't let you sink. Look at me, Anthony. I'm trained to do this. I've got you. Just stay still. Lay on your back and float!" yelled Nathan.
As Nathan was getting closer, so was George, but he was unseen, coming up behind Anthony.
George was finally able to grab him in a firm hold, but couldn't swim hard enough to keep them both afloat.
And Anthony was spitting water and still fighting him, pulling George down with him.
Nathan swam right in front of them and did a dead man's carry by making Anthony fall on his back with George's help.
The men finally made it to shore, but without any help from Anthony.
Instead, he had panicked and fought them all the way, sputtering and spitting up water.
Anthony was still spitting up water when they laid him out on the ground.
Nathan turned Anthony's head so his mouth was to the side and then did compressions, to help make the water come up.
He was breathing but still full of water.
By this time the other men had rushed to where they were, offering to help but not really knowing what to do.
"He's going to be fine. We've just got to get him to cough up the rest of this water," explained Nathan.
Anthony finally started to cough and was then able to slowly release the water he had taken in.
The men sat on the ground around him, somber, realizing they could have lost him.
But also thankful and relieved all was well.
"Let's see we haven't even fished and we've had an intruder (sorry, George), a robber, and a near-drowning. I think we'd better start over! What about you all?" asked Nathan.
Even Anthony laughed, seeming none worse for the wear.
"Quite the adventure, eh? This is one for the books," he choked. "But, thank you both for saving me. I feel I should knight you or something!"
"No need, but we do need to add another task for this outing," suggested Nathan.
"What?" asked Bill.
"Swimming 101," answered Nathan drily, which caused everyone to burst out laughing.
After Anthony, and Nathan changed into dry clothes (George preferred to let the sun dry his), the men decided to hit the dock again.
This time the goal was to fish while staying on the dock!
And this time Nathan brought the life support jackets as backup...just in case.
"Elizabeth, Honey, are you feeling okay?" asked a concerned Madelyne, as she glanced up from her knitting.
"Of course! Why would you ask that?"
If Madelyne didn't know better, that retort would have felt snappy, but she knew Elizabeth well enough to know she didn't mean it that way!
"Well, you've been staring at that magazine for a half-hour…"
"Yes, it's a very interesting article."
"Sweetheart, the magazine is upside down…"
Elizabeth fumbled with her magazine as her face turned crimson, admitting to her soon-to-be Mother-in-Law, she was right.
"I'm sorry. It really is an interesting article that I started on, but then I just couldn't seem to concentrate when I picked it back up again."
"I think we need to go for a walk. Do us both good to get some fresh air. Why don't we go down and sit by the water? I'd ask your Mother to join us, but she went into town with Rosemary. Here, let's go grab our sunhats!"
Elizabeth and Madelyne sat down on the blanket they had brought and spread out by the water's edge.
Madelyne twisted the cap on the thermos of Orange Spiced Iced Tea she had grabbed and poured each of them a cup.
Neither said a word for the longest time until Madelyne finally spoke.
"How's your iced tea, Dear?"
"Very refreshing; I love the orange flavor!"
But this was followed by a very long pause.
"You know the house is spectacular, but the nature around it, well, it's like being on vacation!" complimented Madelyne. "You couldn't have chosen a more beautiful setting!"
Elizabeth's lips couldn't help but curl into a slight smile, "Just wait till you see the Lodge!"
"Can't wait to see, but you know all I know now is here and comparing it to all the other homes I've seen, well, you and Nathan have something very special!"
Elizabeth nodded.
"Sweetheart, you miss your fiancée, don't you?"
Elizabeth turned to face Madelyne and the hurt was plain to see in her eyes.
"I'm never like this. I think I just need him," uttered a bereft Bride. "For some reason, more than ever!"
"Of course, you do! You know, the men are coming home tomorrow. When Nathan was 3 years old, about the age of our precious Little Jack, he decided one day he wanted Cookies, but when I asked him what kind, he couldn't think of the name. So, I made Sugar Cookies, but that wasn't right. The next day he was still asking for Cookies, so I whipped up Colleen's favorite Coconut Cookies thinking he liked those too – well, that was a no-go as well! The third day came, and that little guy was still asking for Cookies, so Toffee it was, but he almost cried. As the Toffee Cookies were cooling, he got resourceful and dragged a stool into my pantry and dug and dug and dug till he came running to me with a jar of chocolate pieces and the biggest smile ever." "Now I had worked all day and really didn't feel like making a fourth batch of cookies, but that smile, knowing he was on the verge of the perfect cookie, well, I couldn't resist! And when that first batch of Chocolate Chipped Cookies came out of the oven, the Little Tyke barely let them cool. Poor little thing sat there and crammed one after the other into his mouth until I thought he was going to be sick. But oddly enough, he never did get sick. Just couldn't wipe that smile off his face! He was in Cookie Heaven!"
"That's a sweet story. I bet he was adorable."
"That he was! You know Nathan would much rather be here with you. It's like you're his Chocolate Chipped Cookie and I honestly don't think after our Wedding on Saturday, he's going to ever be able to wipe that smile off his face. I also have a pretty good hunch you won't either!"
"You're right! Both of us are counting the hours!" beamed Elizabeth.
"There's that radiant Bride! Oh, that story I was telling you, that's not all of it. I still send him cookies when he's down or just needs to feel some love. And I always send three packages – Sugar Cookies first, Coconut Cookies second, Toffee Cookies third…"
"And his favorite Chocolate Chipped Cookies last. But why not just send his favorite and save all that work by just forgetting the others?"
"Because it makes him feel loved my Dear. That little three-year-old boy who's still in him reminds him of his worn-out Mother making batch after batch of four different kinds of cookies, just to get the right one. His perfect cookie! It builds anticipation, Love, and by the time those treasured Chocolate Chipped Cookies get there, why, they taste ten times as good as they should!"
Elizabeth let out a little laugh as she finally got it!
"So, that's what our separation is doing now? Building anticipation?"
Madelyne winked and nodded.
Elizabeth grabbed Madelyne in a bear hug!
"I love you!"
"I love you too, my Darling! You know, I've got an idea lets go make two little boys very happy!"
"Yes! Let's make all three recipes and surprise Nathan and Jack! And Allie too!"
"Oh, yes! My Girl's right in there, too!"
Elizabeth was all smiles as she helped Madelyne stand up. She then folded their blanket and arm in arm, the Bride and her Mother-in-Law picked up their pace and walked hurriedly back to the Grant Home, heading straight for the kitchen to make some very special Cookies for two very special boys and one very special girl!
"Gentlemen, there's going to be a huge Fish Fry tonight! Think we've got more than enough!" declared Nathan.
The men had fished for hours, breathing in the fresh air and telling story after story, each bonding with the other.
Aaron had made it back just after the near-drowning of Lord Townsend.
"Hey, I'm just thankful I missed that part! Water's not my favorite."
"What!" exclaimed Bill. "You have to swim to be a Mountie…"
"Oh, I can swim. Just not very well!"
"Are you serious," asked a concerned Nathan, and he could tell Aaron was indeed very serious.
"As I said, Swimming 101 at the Lodge it is! And you're our first student!"
"Well, at least that makes me feel better Aaron," commiserated Anthony, the almost drowned Lord.
"After the Wedding, Aaron, Bill, Lee, Nathaniel, and I will work with you till you're a Pro!"
The men made an official pact, with Aaron committing too.
"Nathaniel, how do we clean these suckers?" asked William.
"Just follow me," and Nathaniel directed the men to the end of the dock, which had a flat table built into it.
"Wait! We need pictures. No one will ever believe us!"
"I think I forgot our camera!" moaned Nathan.
"I have a very good one. Will go get. Wait here…" and George took a running dash over the dock, ending up in the small cabin.
He returned with a very fancy camera and started lining the men up with their fish.
Nathan had noted, George didn't have a lot, but want he did have was very nice, whether it was something from Nature or just commerce.
'A man of quality!' thought Nathan. 'A man who cares!'
William was first. He had caught the most fish, not counting Nathan, at six in all. Two Northern Pike, one Trout, and three Walleye. His only disappointment was he wanted a really big catch, and although all of his were large, they weren't the giant he had been hoping to hang in his office!
"There's always tomorrow morning and the fish bite even better then," reassured Nathan. "You'll catch that huge one yet!"
Archie was next with a count of five, but one of his catches was a big Large-mouthed Bass.
"This one's going to be good eating!"
"That's for sure, Dad! Lots of firm, but tender white meat. Those Trout don't look bad either."
He also caught three Trout and a Black Crappie.
Aaron caught four, even after arriving late, and they were all Trout.
Anthony caught three, one Walleye and two Northern Pike.
Nathan, Nathaniel, and Bill caught several but spent most of their time helping the others.
The men were astounded as George caught three, but they were with his bare hands standing in shallow water, near a tree. Surprisingly, all were medium-sized! Definitely, an observed spectacle that would not soon be forgotten!
Then the men lined up with their catches as George took proud pictures of them for keepsakes in both individual and group shots!
And they would be surprised to learn on development of the film that George Flying Eagle was a very, very good Photographer.
"Come on men, let's go to the end of the dock for lessons on how to scale and clean your fish. It's part of the drill. Then Nathan will fry them up like you've never seen before! I've been frying fish for twenty-five years, but mine can't touch his!" called Nathaniel. "You Gentlemen are in for a real treat!"
After the messy job was done, the men proudly took their fish fillets to the Lodge and placed them in the fridge.
"Nathan, do you think we could tour the grounds while it's still light?" asked Archie.
"Dad, that's perfect – nothing better than seeing it at sunset! Let's get the horses! Thanks to Nathaniel, you all are in for a real treat!"
After saddling up and riding first around the lake, then further out, the glorious sunset cast first a purplish, rose-toned glow, followed by a myriad of other stunning colors over both the blue water and the land.
Each color change was more stunning at every turn.
Wildflowers were everywhere, creating a mass of stunning colors.
Brambles of wild rose-colored roses seemed to be everywhere, creating quite the splashy statement, scattered in massive bunches.
"This land is a masterpiece, Nathan!" admired William.
"Yes, God's masterpiece, everywhere around us. I still am amazed and probably always will be. Nathaniel has given us a magnificent gift that just keeps giving. That's why I want all of us to enjoy it!"
George was hoping that included him because this place had spoken to his soul like none other.
'I could live my days and happily die here,' thought George.
Perhaps for the first time, Nathan realized this majestic land and lake were really his. His and Elizabeth's.
And as he watched the sunset over the hills, his heart was full of profound gratitude.
But at the thought of his sweet Elizabeth, his very soul began to ache with a longing he barely understood.
Needing to be with her, to hear her voice, to touch her hair, to hold her hand, to kiss her lips.
Six more days and they would be one…
