Chapter 3: Ignorance

Zero POV

Zero didn't know how long he'd been here locked up now; it could have been minutes, it could have been hours, it could have been days, or it could even have been months. Everything seemed to merge into that of one big blur. On so many occasions had he wanted to kill himself; to end this suffering he so miserably lived through. But, how could he be so selfish? At times like those, he would think about his Yuki, think about her innocent smile. that smile. It just made it all that much more bearable, just so that he could see her perfect face again. He would hang in there for her. He would do it.

Slowly and slowly Zero had been losing the will to live. He could feel himself slowly reaching breaking point, though it was that little voice at the back of his mind that would give him strength in his time of need. It was that little voice that would give him those encouraging words, and keep him within his own bubble of sanity, and stop him from losing it, completely.

'Hang in there Zero, do it for her... Do it for your angel.' Yuki. My angel, that's what she was. But was she my guardian angel, would she be the one to save me? He could hear Kaname's laugh echo in the back of his mind, making sure he hadn't forgotten of his existence. Zero chose to ignore it.

On several occasions had Zero though of those light toned burgundy orbs that would stare so intently at him, that smile that could light up the darkest darkness, and even the blackness he seemed so irrevocably consumed in. Her hair so gracefully cascaded around that heart shaped head of hers, serene features.

A picture of peace, a picture of beauty.

None of the wiser... A picture of Ignorance.

Zero sighed. Yuki had questioned him as to why he wasn't allowed free of this little cage Kuran kept him in if she was allowed to see him without issue; Zero knew why, but he would never dare tell the girl. Kaname had deemed him still to be unsafe. The whole operation was handed to Kaname's stature to sort out, so Yagari and the hunter association had nothing more to do with it. Kaname decided to take Zero into his care, as he was the one providing him with the blood with the knowledge he could fall at any given time. And Yuki, being the gullible head-over-heels-in-love girl with Kaname she is, would believe anything he told her. He hated it

Continuously feeding her those same damn lies.

He absolutely loathed how the same person that would be the one to drive him to his end, is the only person that could save him. It was sad, so very sad.

For the first time in his life, he envied Yuki, and that blissful ignorance of hers. Though so badly he wished Yuki could see this monsters true nature, and shed some light on the harsh reality that Kaname Kuran isn't all but smiles and his usual grace and elegance. Such a perfect façade... He wished she could truly see how perverted and crude this man was, he could only hope, no wish that Kaname would never treat her like this, never hurt her, never make her cry, never rape her... Rape. He laughed. If he was such a waste of skin, a terrible excuse for life, for existence, why would the almighty pureblood want to rape such a lowly level-D?

He was worse than the monstrosity that resided in Zero... Kaname was the devil.

Zero had to unwillingly keep up his own flawless façade; all smiles, smiles he could hardly manage. This own charade of his was gradually breaking down around him, bit by bit. He sometimes wondered if she saw through it when she came to visit as he watched the way her face plunged him into a world full of emotion filled with uncertainty and, was that a hint of helplessness he could see glaze over the chocolate depth of her iris? He was sure she must've noticed at least something. She was no foolish little girl, and oh, she knew Zero all too well.

He could only hope, anyway.

The brief encounters he did actually manage to savour with his dear beloved, were only too short to last. Though, the short times that he would see her, would give him hope, give him hope to stay on just that little bit longer, and know he hadn't been forgotten about yet, and that she truly did care about him; even if just a little. Though, to his dismay, every time Kuran would pull her away within no little than five minutes, and she would unwillingly succumb to the request, like every one of those gullible underlings of his. Zero laughed, humourlessly. They all adored, looked up to him, and obeyed him, but nobody knew the true him. No one other than his enemy himself. The irony could only make him laugh even more.

Zero couldn't help wonder though, why Kaname would even grant Yuki access to see him. Oh but of course, Zero knew all too well. Kaname wouldn't want to deprive his 'little girl' of anything she wanted; even if it was the thing he supposedly hated most. Isn't that right Kuran? He thought quietly aloud, with a hint of irritation and sarcasm painted across his words. He could tell Kaname would do everything in his power to make her forget, and make her hate him though, the things he told her about him... Zero could only imagine. He didn't see Yuki frequently either, that pureblood must have been
manipulating her, putting her off as long as possible so that she wouldn't see him.

Whatever he was saying anyway; it was working. Zero frowned.

Was it to tease him, the way he stood there all smiles as he caressed her face so gently while he himself watched this display? Would that look in his eye be a simple threat, a simple warning, a mockery coated gaze even that all out commanded he keep his distance at all costs? Kaname knew all the right ways to torture Zero. Did he honestly enjoy the suffering of others, that much? He was a true beast... If he was to ever hurt his Yuki, he would kill him.

'Sure you would Zero' that degrading voice chimed in at the back of his mind.

Why hadn't he done it already? Was it for her sake? Did he not want her to suffer? Or was it the same reason he wouldn't take his own life? Was Zero scared that he couldn't defeat him, scared that he was so undeniably helpless, that he didn't have the slightest ounce of a chance?

It was all of the above.

For once in his life, Zero was utterly powerless. And he loathed knowing this, to be used so freely. He didn't have his bloody rose. That had also been taken away from him. His Rose. A distinct sadness made his chest constrict, that tightness squeezing him not all too lightly. One of the only things he valued dear in his life, one of the only things that help got him through, protected him and stood through with him whatever battle he fought. He longed to see that trusty silver metal that warmed by his simple touch, and he'd grown to know and love so much. It wasn't fair.

Life isn't fair.

That sinfully rich voice rang throughout the silence. So many times he'd dreamed, and endlessly he would wish that he could shoot the pureblood; bury that sharp bullet so deep within his chest, fire that entire barrel of his enragingly at him. Yet one barrel wouldn't quite satisfy him... Perhaps half a dozen? He wanted Kaname's death to be the most brutal. Long and slow. Just like the torture he made him endure while those anti vampire bullets made his wounds heal ever so slowly, painfully and prolong his suffering. What he would do for his rose again...

The sudden thought made him wonder if his dear Lilly was still alive. He kept forgetting to ask Yuki on her so distant visits, always too occupied asking her of other things. Zero was almost positive that Kaname wouldn't give him the satisfaction of her being alive. The beast would take everything Zero held dear, without hesitation, and eradicate it before his very eyes.

The only thing Kuran could never destroy was Yuki. Sure he could take her away, but that would always be the one thing that would still be there. Unless of course, the pureblood went completely insane, lost it and completely taken her too...

Zero closed his eyes as means to escape, only to be met with that same darkness, the same darkness that would, like reality, endlessly tease him with images that danced as if something so happy and merry beneath his very eyelids. Yet it was none other than that sick pureblood monster, tormenting him the best way he knew how. There was truly no escape. If only everybody knew what happened behind closed doors... Nobody knew the purebloods true nature, not the way Zero did. He wished he could so badly shatter that image, shatter it into a thousand tiny pieces, and let everyone know who he truly was, what he truly was. The man was beyond the point of complete and utter corruption... Oh, how he would like to enlighten the world, enlighten his little slaves that would so willingly tend to his every whim... Pathetic.

'Like you are' That other infamous voice again. SHUT UP! He screamed in his head, willing that wretched voice away. Not only did he have that stupid pureblood insulting him, but his own inner voice seemed to make it its goal to belittle him as much as possible. Zero truly thought he was slowly growing insane.

He shook his head rapidly. Did the pureblood not show just an ounce of pity? The way Kaname would make his own blood poor from his skin, and how that sadistic smile contorted pure features, it made his entire body shiver like it never had before, not even like the cold on that fateful night so long ago. Only Kaname could make him feel like that; make his whole body shake with fear while that dangerous tingle of anticipation ran up his spine, only intensifying his trembling. Zero would never himself admit to that hint of anticipation, it was something he simply couldn't control, something more dark, on the more feral side of him.

It was unfair... It really was. Then he was forced to remember that nothing in life for him was ever fair, so why should it be now? Kaname and his apathetic attitude was anything to piss and exasperate one off to their limit, and to think the same person could care so much about and could be trusted to take care of such a sweet and innocent young girl, someone as gentle and vulnerable as Yuki. To think he could love her, or well, to think even such a beast could even love at all. He was a heartless man, a heartless, heartless man. He didn't even know who Kaname was anymore... When did things get so bad?

A shaky sigh was drawn forth from the depths of his throat, forced through dry, cracked lips.

Ignorance is bliss... they had always told him, only now could he truly understand, and grasp its meaning.
