Atem turned as he heard the door to the dungeon creak open. A few moments later, Isis and Angeline stepped in front of the cell he was being kept in. He didn't blame them for putting him in a cell, after all, he was still shaking off the effects of Helena's magic.
"How is he?" Isis asked turning to Angeline. The fairy was quiet for a few moments, her green eyes studying him before turning to Isis.
"He's fine," Angeline said with a nod. "There's a little left over magic still there but he's fine."
"How's Yami?" Atem asked turning to Isis.
"He's sleeping for right now," Isis said with a sigh. "It was a rough birth for him."
"How long was I out for?" Atem asked.
"A few days," Angeline answered.
"Can I see him?" Atem asked softly, he wasn't sure if anyone here would trust him to be with Yami. Especially after what had happened thanks to Helena's influence.
The two women shared a look with each other, a silent conversation. A few moments later they shared a nod and turned back to Atem.
"For a few minutes, you still have some of Helena's magic in you," Angeline said waving her hand and unlocking the cell door, the door opening moments later.
Atem was led upstairs and down the hall, humans who were patching up their wounds turned and sent him glares. Usually, they wouldn't affect him but after what had happened, he winced softly under the glares.
"What's he doing out?" Joey asked with a glare as Isis, Angeline, and Atem walked up to the room Yami was resting. He, Bakura, Ryou, Marik, and Malik were guarding outside while Yugi was inside with Yami.
"Most of Helena's magic has left him, he'll only be here for a few moments," Angeline explained. "Some magic is still being flushed out of his system."
"Are we sure it's safe?" Ryou asked, Bakura's arm wrapped around his waist.
"How do we know he won't attack Yami?" Malik asked from where he leaned on the wall with Marik.
"I'm certain he won't," Angeline responded with a soft smile. "With Helena locked up and her magic contained, he won't be under her influence."
"Fine," Joey said with a sigh. "But if anything happens, I will be coming in there to kick your ass."
"I wouldn't expect anything less," Atem said with a soft smile, Joey returned his smile but still seemed hesitant.
"I need to check over your child so I'll be going in with you," Isis said from beside Atem. "It was a difficult birth and I want to make sure they're doing okay."
"Very well," Atem said with a nod making note of how Isis was hiding the gender of his child.
Yugi turned from where he was sitting beside the bed Yami was lying in and his body tensed seeing Atem enter with Isis and Angeline.
"Why did you let him out?" Yugi asked, his hand wavering over the hilt of his sword as they closed behind them.
"Helena's magic has almost flushed itself out completely," Angeline explained. "And with her locked up still, there's no chance of her influence, it will only be for a few minutes."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Yugi asked, his eyes never leaving Atem.
"Not really," Angeline responded with a sigh. "But my tie with Yami will allow me to know what's happening."
There was a few moments of silence, mostly filled with Yugi glaring at Atem.
"Fine," Yugi said, pulling his hand away from his sword.
Once Yugi and Angeline left the room, Isis excused herself and headed into a connected room. Atem assumed that was where his and Yami's child was sleeping.
Atem turned his attention back to Yami who lay on the bed, the sight of his chest rising and falling was the only thing that brought Atem relief at the moment. Slowly, Atem walked over to the bed and sat down in the chair that Yugi had previously occupied.
Atem caught sight of the bandage that was wrapped around Yami's right arm, a chill ran down his spine as he remembered attacking Yami in a rage.
Atem was brought out of his thoughts when he saw Yami stir and his eyes open to reveal the beautiful violet Atem had fallen in love with. Yami glanced around the room in a daze before his head turned and his eyes widened seeing Atem in the room with him.
"Atem?" Yami asked softly as his body tensed, Atem wincing as he did so. Guilt flooded him as he was the reason why Yami was so tense.
Atem honestly didn't know what to say. He wasn't sure how he could talk to Yami after what happened, his mind drawing a blank.
"I'm sorry," Atem whispered, his head lowering as he stared at the ring on his finger, his wedding ring.
"What?" Yami asked pushing himself up and looking at Atem in concern. This was different than when he left, something had shaken Atem out of his state.
"I'm sorry," Atem repeated as tears filled his eyes. "For everything, for allowing myself to fall down the path I did, for starting another war but most of all," Atem glanced up and a single tear slipped down his cheek. "For hurting you."
Yami stared at Atem in shock. He had never seen Atem cry. The Emperor's pride stopped him and forced himself to not show emotion.
And yet, here he was.
"I forgive you," Yami said leaning forward and grabbing onto Atem's hand. The Emperor raised his head, his eyes wide as Yami pulled him to sit on the side of the bed.
"But-"
"It wasn't you," Yami said with a soft smile. "It was Helena, you're not to blame."
"Are you sure you forgive me?" Atem asked softly. "I hurt you and almost lost you in the process, and our child."
"And yet I'm still here," Yami replied. "I'm sitting in front of you aren't I?"
"But-"
"Atem," Yami interrupted with a soft glare.
"What?" Atem asked.
"Shut up for once in your life and kiss me," Yami said to which Atem smiled with a soft laugh.
"Gladly," Atem replied and leaned forwards, landing a gentle kiss on his mate's lips. A warmth washed over both of them as their bond was stitched back together.
"Your Majesty," Isis announced from the doorway of the side room. "Would you like to meet your daughter?"
"Daughter?" Atem asked turning to Yami as Isis left to grab his child from the room. She returned a moment later with a bundle in his arms, wrapped in a white blanket.
Yami scooted over and allowed Atem to sit beside him. A soft smile on his face as Isis placed their daughter into Atem's arms.
At the sight of his daughter, Atem's heart melted.
Her skin was a light tan, her hair was black and curled at the ends. Upon being placed in her father's arms, her eyes opened and Atem smiled seeing the violet eyes of his mate. It was clear who she would take after as she grew.
"She's beautiful," Atem said with a smile. He couldn't put into words how excited he felt finally seeing his daughter.
"I told you it was going to be a girl," Yami pointed out to which Atem rolled his eyes.
"Okay, you were right," Atem replied with a chuckle. "What did you name her?"
"I never got a chance to," Yami said rubbing the back of his neck. "It was a stressful birth and I practically passed out after she was out."
"Right," Atem muttered, guilt flooding through him before he shook himself out of it. "How about…Amelle?"
"Did you really just combine our mother's names together?" Yami asked with a roll of his eyes.
"Too cheesy?" Atem asked to which Yami sighed.
"This isn't Twilight Ate, do I look like Bella Swan to you?" Yami asked which caused great confusion in Atem.
"What's Twilight? And who is this Bella Swan?" Atem asked.
"Don't worry about it," Yami said shaking his head. "The readers will know."
There was silence as Atem was still greatly confused about who Yami was talking about.
"The who?"
"Nevermind," Yami said with a soft sigh. "Anyways, I was thinking of baby names before this all happened and I thought of what my mother wanted to name Yugi if he was born a girl."
"And what is that?" Atem asked as his daughter grabbed onto his finger and held onto it. She had a tight grip.
"Anita," Yami answered. "It means grace."
"I love it," Atem answered with a smile. "It suits her."
Isis smiled as she watched the couple fawn over their daughter. Quietly, she excused herself and exited the room, the group turning as the door opened and closed as she headed into the hallway.
"How is it in there?" Joey asked.
"Everything is fine, Yami has forgiven him and they are with their daughter," Isis answered with a soft sigh.
"Already?" Yugi asked. "That was fast."
"Well, Atem and Yami are mates," Bakura pointed out. "It's only natural that Yami would forgive Atem already."
"I guess," Yugi muttered with a sigh.
Later that evening, the group met in the meeting room to discuss their next move. Atem was also present, Yami sitting beside him. Isis was in the bedroom watching Anita and Anthony.
The main topic of the evening being what to do about the Council and more importantly, Helena.
"So Heba," Bakura said turning to Heba. "Care to share this grand plan you and Yugi came up with?"
"Yami actually gave us the idea," Yugi said with a smile. "Since the Council still believes that Atem is on their side under Helena's influence, we need to get close to the Council to take them down once and for all."
"Make the Council believe I'm still on their side and then strike when they least expect it?" Atem wondered out loud. "It may work but we'd only have a small window before they figure it out."
"Only one problem," Seto said eyeing Angeline who stood in the corner of the room. "The Council will wonder where Helena is."
"I may have a work around that," Angeline said with a smile. "I can change my appearance and take on the role of Helena to fool the Council."
"By the time they realize it," Yami said with a nod. "It would be too late."
"But the question is, how will we get close enough to them?" Marik asked. "We can't exactly walk right into the palace, the guards would stop us."
"Or can we," Otogi asked, staring down at the table in thought.
"What are you thinking Otogi?" Yami asked.
"Well, everyone here is a traitor basically," Otogi explained. "What if we made it look like the battle was won and we were taken back as prisoners?"
"That would probably work," Atem said with a nod.
"But one problem," Joey said with a sigh. "We kind of killed all the vampires Atem brought with him, if only Atem were to return with all of us, it would look suspicious."
There was a few moments of silence before Angeline spoke up.
"I may have a solution," Angeline said pulling her wand out and casting a spell. Beside her, stood six guards, all with red eyes and sharp teeth like vampires.
"Did you just summon vampires?" Ryou asked with wide eyes.
"Sort of," Angeline said waving her hand through them, her hand going through them. "Just illusions."
"Would they be enough to trick the Council?" Malik asked.
"It's going to have to be," Atem said with a sigh. "Not like we have any other choice."
That night, Atem and the others spent most of the night going over the plan. Yami had left to go put Anita down to bed, Honda heading off to bed as well to put Anthony down.
The bed had been switched to a larger bed to accommodate both Yami and Atem. The crib for Anita, set up in the spare bedroom connected to the bedroom.
When Atem got to the bedroom, he froze hearing Yami singing softly in the room.
"La la lu
La la lu
Oh my little star sweeper
I'll sweep the stardust for you"
Atem opened the door softly and smiled seeing Yami rocking in the rocking chair Yugi had brought into the bedroom for him. Anita in his arms, wrapped in a lavender blanket.
"La la lu
La la lu
Little soft, fluffy sleeper
Here comes a pink cloud for you"
Atem had only heard Yami sing a few times before. However, hearing him sing their daughter to sleep made his heart melt.
"La la lu
La la lu
Little wandering angel
Fold up your wings
Close your eyes"
Yami turned feeling eyes on him and softly smiled seeing his husband standing by the door. Yami stood up from the rocking chair softly and headed to the spare bedroom where Anita's crib was, Atem following with a smile.
"La la lu
La la lu
And may love be your keeper"
Yami gently lay Anita down in her crib and Atem watched as she let out a big yawn and fell asleep. Wrapping an arm around Yami's waist as Yami finished off the song, blowing the candle out as he did so.
"La la lu
La la lu
La la lu"
The couple left the bedroom and returned to their own room, keep the door ajar in case Anita woke up in the middle of the night.
"Where did you hear that song from?" Atem asked as he changed into more comfortable clothes.
"My mother," Yami answered as he climbed into the bed sheets. "She would sing it to me and Yugi, I figured I would pass it down to Anita."
"I love it," Atem said with a smile as Yami curled into his arms. "Good night love."
"Good night," Yami said with a loud yawn before falling asleep. Atem chuckled and gently kissed his forehead before following his mate into sleep.
Atem was woken up in the middle of the night. He wasn't sure what woke him up but he got out of bed and headed to Anita's room to check on her. His eyes widened when he saw someone standing over her crib, a woman.
"Who are you?" Atem said with a glare. The woman turned and Atem's eyes widened seeing who it was. "Mother?"
"Hello Atem," his mother, Queen Amara said with a smile.
"This is a dream isn't it?" Atem asked, his mother nodding with a frown,
"Yes," Amara said before making her way to her son and cupping his cheek with a smile. "You've grown so much."
"What are you doing here?" Atem asked, Amara stepped away and headed back to the crib where Anita was awake and staring up at the woman.
"To visit my granddaughter of course," Amara said picking the girl up from the crib and into her arms. "She's beautiful."
"Yes, she is," Atem said with a nod.
"She almost wouldn't have been here if you kept going down the path you were going down," Amara said turning to Atem with a soft glare. "You almost killed Yami in the process."
"I know," Atem said, his head hanging in shame as he watched his mother smiled down at Anita once more before placing her back in the crib.
"Then again, it must run in the family," Amara said with a sigh.
"What are you talking about?" Atem asked.
"It's the path me and your father went down," Amara said with a frown. "What led to our deaths."
Atem flinched as a memory washed through him.
There stood his mother in a forest, dressed in a black dress, a red sash, and a red jacket over top. Beside her stood his father, Aknamkanon.
"They couldn't have gotten far," Aknamkanon said turning to his wife with a nod.
"She will pay for what she has done," Amara said taking off, following the sweet scent of a traitor and her husband.
The scene changed and Atem watched his parents and their guards race past a cave, a cave that held a familiar presence inside.
It must have been the cave Yami's parents hid him and Yugi inside to keep them safe.
"There's nowhere else to hide Estelle," Amara said with a glare, her eyes glowing red. Atem wasn't sure he has ever seen his mother so angry.
"This ends here," Aknamkanon said with a glare.
Atem watched as his father charged for Yami's father, Thomas. The pair started fighting as Amara and Estelle watched on. Thomas may have been the resistance leader and a great fighter but no one was as good as Aknamkanon.
Thomas fell to the ground, his arm cut clean off and his head following.
However, what no one was expecting was for Estelle to have snuck up on Aknamkanon and let out a cry of anguish as she aimed an arrow at his head and let go. The arrow lodged in his forehead before Estelle pulled out a dagger and sliced his neck.
His father falling the ground, motionless as he bled out.
"Bitch!" Amara yelled racing up to Estelle and stabbing her sword through her stomach. Estelle let out a grunt before she used her dagger to cut Amara's cheek. "You'll have to do better than that."
"How about this?" Estelle asked pulling out a vial of holy water and tossing it into Amara's eyes. The vampire letting out a shriek of pain and pulling back, pulling her sword along with it. Blood spilled from Estelle's wound but she pushed past her pain and pulled out her own sword. "It's over Amara."
Atem watched with tears in his eyes as his mother's head was chopped off. Estelle fell to the ground, blood spilling out more rapidly as she let out her final breaths.
Atem was pulled out of the memory and turned to his mother with tears in his eyes.
"After we found of Estelle and Thomas were leaders of the resistance, we charged them with treason and chased them down," Amara said with a frown. "Our own anger blinded us and that led to our destruction."
"That was almost me and Yami," Atem said turning to face the bedroom where his mate was still sleeping.
"Yami is lucky he had Angeline on his side and you were able to be broken from Helena's magic," Amara said with a smile. "But I'm afraid our time has come to an end."
"What?" Atem asked with wide eyes." No, please," Atem pleaded with tears in his eyes. "I can't say goodbye to you again."
"Shh love," Amara said pulling Atem into her arms, letting her son cry into her chest. Her heart clenching at the thought of leaving her son again. "I'll always be here, I've never left you."
"Please."
"But you must wake up now," Amara said kissing his forehead gently.
"Wake up!"
Atem opened his eyes and seen Yami staring at him, eyes full of worry.
"What's wrong?" Atem asked as he sat up.
"You were talking in your sleep and then you started crying," Yami said running his thumbs across Atem's cheeks and wiping his tears away. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Atem said with a soft smile. "I just had a dream, nothing to worry about."
"Whatever you say," Yami said with a soft chuckle. "We're getting ready to head out," Yami said climbing out of the bed and heading to Anita's bedroom to get her ready.
"Right," Atem said with a sigh. "Well, let's get this over with."
Author's Note:
Yes, the lullaby is La La Lu from Lady and The Tramp. I've always loved that song and thought it would be a cute detail to add in.
Anyways, we're getting closer and closer to the end! I'm excited!
Until then!
