Zoey lets out a soft moan when her back hits the bookshelf. Usually, there was some banter and catching up while drinking Scotch. But within a minute of stepping into the library, Bruce hadn't been able to keep his hands or lips off of her. He yanks her dress up while she undoes his belt and zipper. His kiss is bruising as he thrusts into her. This was animalistic. There was nothing tender about this encounter between them. And Zoey wasn't going to deny that it was thrilling and exciting. She comes with a cry. He lets out a grunt. Their heavy breathing was the only noise in the room.
Bruce pulls back and tucks himself in before moving towards the small bar. Zoey fixes her dress. She knew that she should say it; those two words that are the tip of her tongue. But she can't. She takes the glass from him. She stares at him; willing the words to come out on their own. But they don't. He grabs her hand and leads her out of the library. She knows she should force the words out. But she can't. More than anything, she's happy that Oliver had been unable to come with her to the gala at the last minute.
The next morning, Zoey stares at the ceiling of Bruce's bedroom. She hears him stir and looks over at him. "We can't do this anymore," she softly tells him, turning her gaze back to the ceiling.
Bruce runs a hand through his hair. "Can you give me a reason?"
"Oliver and I got married. In December," she confesses. Other than Austin, they hadn't told anyone. Max still didn't know. Zoey tells him everything. Then silence as they lay there. Zoey avoids looking at him while she gets dressed. She doesn't let the tears fall during the drive back to the Rosewood.
Zoey opens the door to the Carmichael family suite and finds Oliver sitting at the table with Max. "Look, who is back way earlier than I expected," Max amusedly greets. "And look who showed up this morning." Zoey opens her mouth, but nothing comes out. She can't stop the tears that start to fall. Max shoots Oliver a concerned look. "Zoey, is every—"
"Oliver and I got married in December," Zoey interrupts. She takes a deep breath. "I told him everything. And Bruce and I are done. For good."
Max looks between Zoey and Oliver. "Whose fucking idea was this?"
"Mine."
"Did you idiots at least get a prenup or fuck, a postnuptial?"
"No."
"Fuck. What the fuck were you thinking? Actually, don't answer that. I don't fucking care right now." Max turns to Oliver. "Why the fuck would go along with this?"
Oliver stares at Max. He considered the man an older brother. "Because she asked."
"I'm-I'm going to go take a shower," Zoey softly says, then walks into the bedroom she had claimed. She hears the door softly close and turns to find Oliver standing there. "Ollie, I'm so sorry."
Oliver had been ready to argue with her. To remind her of what she agreed to. But seeing how much pain she was currently in, he lets it go. He pulls her into a tight embrace. "It's fine, Zo," he softly tells her. "You really care about him, don't you?" Zoey just nods in response.
Zoey sighs as she walks into the house. Since returning from Gotham she had been avoiding everyone. She knew how to blend in. The last thing she wanted to talk about with anyone was why she seemed so sad. There's a knock on the door and she lets out an annoyed breath. Zoey walks over to the door and opens it to find Lex standing there. "Lex—" He cuts her off by pressing his lips against hers. Her back hits the wall. His hands are under her skirt.
Zoey pushes at him. "Lex, stop."
"We both know that this is all you're good for," Lex coldly tells her.
"Get out."
She didn't like the look in his eye. The one that was cold. Unfeeling. He leans in. "I get what I want."
"Get out."
Lex wraps a hand around her throat and squeezes. She reaches for the vase of flowers and grabs it. She smashes it against his head. "Fuck," Lex snaps. He lets go of her and Zoey starts to run towards the couch. He grabs her arm and slams her against the wall. "Looks like the billionaire slut has some fight in her."
Zoey shoves at him. "Let go of me."
Lex grabs a chunk of her hair and yanks her head back. Tears sting her eyes. "I always get what I want."
Tears fall and Zoey stares at him. "Lex, please, don't do this."
Lex lets go of her and she falls to the floor. "Pathetic," he says, then walks out of the house. Zoey sits there. She blinks back the tears, then takes a deep breath. It's while she's cleaning up the pieces of the broken vase that Zoey cuts her hand. She stares at the blood flowing from the deep cut, then stands up and grabs a towel.
An hour later, Zoey shifts on the uncomfortable chair in the waiting room of the emergency department of Smallville Medical Center. "Zoey?" She looks up to see Martha. Martha sits down in the empty chair next to her. "Sweetheart, is everything okay?"
Zoey holds up her injured hand. "I cut my hand," she softly says.
Martha doesn't miss the bruise forming on Zoey's neck. The admissions form was sitting on Zoey's lap, unfilled out. Martha gently pulls the clipboard from Zoey's lap. "Sweetheart, I'll get this filled out for you."
"Can…can I stay with you guys," Zoey whispers. She blinks back the tears.
"Honey, you don't have to ask."
The end of the school year quickly passed for Zoey. She had managed to avoid participating in many of the activities she, at one time, had been looking forward to. She knew everyone was concerned about her, but she put on a happy face. She had heard from Clark about an accident at LuthorCorp that caused Lex to be split into two different versions of himself: one good, gone evil. Zoey had quickly deduced that the evil Lex had been the one to pay her a visit. She didn't tell anyone though. She wanted to put everything behind her. But evil Lex's use of the cruel nickname was the one thing that kept replaying in her mind. It was the one thing she couldn't put behind her.
Zoey looks up when Max plops down on her bed. He stares at her. "You are going to tell me what the fuck is going on with you."
"I'm fine," Zoey replies, turning back to her laptop. She had been working on her speech for the graduation ceremony.
"Bullshit."
"Uncle Max—"
"Don't Uncle Max me. Everyone is worried about you. Dr. Specter is considering putting you on antidepressants. The only reason we know that you're not drinking or doing anything else is that all your tests come back clean. So, tell me what is going on?"
Zoey lets out an annoyed breath and turns to him. "Lex got caught in an accident at LuthorCorp, got split into two. One good, one bad. The evil version of Lex nearly rapes me. Except he doesn't at the last minute. But he does call me the billionaire slut and tells me that's all I'm good for. That just adds to the fact that Oliver told me that's what all those stuffy assholes call me. The billionaire slut." She shakes her head and turns back to her speech. "That's all they see me as."
A silence falls over them. Max can't think of anything to say. "Zoey, I'm sorry."
"It's fine."
"They all call me a bastard. They have since I was a kid. Dad tried to hide it from me. So did your mom. But I still saw the looks. I knew what they were saying about me. I know what the board says about me. That I'm nowhere as good as my dad. That I'm failing. It just makes me determined to prove them all wrong."
Zoey sighs and looks at him. "When I put forth the whole marriage thing to Oliver, I told him it didn't have to be real or anything. Just something on paper that way he could have his shares back. He said no. And he told me about the…nickname. Ollie…he said no one would ever take me seriously. What evil Lex did doesn't give me nightmares. It's what he said."
Max grabs her hand. "Zoey, you can't allow them to stop you from living your life. Believe me."
"But I needed to tone everything down."
"Don't change a thing. You want these assholes to take you seriously, then don't change who you are for them."
"Have either of you seen Lana yet," Clark asks as he stands in line to receive his diploma with Chloe and Zoey. The principal was reading off the names. She had been confused as to why she hadn't been allowed to give her speech yet.
"Still no sign. I'm starting to get worried. Lana's never so much as had a tardy. She's not gonna miss her high school graduation," Chloe replies.
Zoey nods in agreement. "I'm sure she'll get here right before her name is called." They part down different aisles. They watch as Clark walks across the stage and receives his diploma. "It is weird that Lana isn't here through."
"Very," Chloe agrees.
The principal calls out Lana's name. But no one walks across the stage. Zoey and Chloe exchange a worried look. A siren blares out and they turn to see military trucks drive up.
"Attention," a man shouts through a megaphone. "Remain calm! By order of the Federal Emergency Decree: All non-essential personnel should evacuate the area within a fifty-mile radius. In approximately three hours, a meteor shower is predicted in Smallville."
"What the fuck," Zoey mutters.
"Please remain calm. There's no need to panic. Please proceed to your home and carry only necessary items."
"I'll see you later," Zoey tells Chloe, then goes in search of Max, Austin, and the Kents. "Uncle Max!"
Max pulls her into a tight embrace. He looks at Austin. "Jonathan and Martha are already heading back to the farm. Austin and I are going to head to the house, grab what we can't lose. We'll meet you at the farm."
Zoey nods. "Okay."
Austin pulls her into a hug. "I had everything sent by a private courier this morning. Oliver should have everything by now. Are you sure this is something you want to do?"
"Well, he is my husband. Why wouldn't I make him in charge of me if something happens?"
"Because it makes it real for other people."
Zoey lets out a frustrated breath. She was trying to find a necklace that her mother had left her. It was nothing extravagant. It was a smile gold pendant with stars on it. She had found it a few years ago among the jewelry that Shannon had left her. She knew that Jonathan and Martha had just left. "Found you," she whispers, finding the necklace under the bed.
Zoey puts it on and grabs her purse. She starts to make her way out of the house. She stops at the top of the stairs when she hears voices downstairs. She makes out Jonathan's voice. Then Jason Teague's voice. She quietly slips back into her bedroom. She could still hear Jason demanding the stones and information about Clark. Anything she could use as a weapon was at Max's house. She didn't bring the bow and arrow she had gotten from Oliver to the Kents.
A gunshot rings out. Zoey lets out a yelp as something hits her hand. Blood flowed from a small cut. She hears the sounds of a fight and slowly makes her way towards the stairs. Jonathan and Jason were wrestling for control of the shotgun. Jason grabs a bottle from the counter and smashes on Jonathan's head, gaining control of the shotgun. Zoey backs up when he turns to the stairs. "Please let me go," she softly says, holding up her hands.
Jason stares at her, gun aimed at her. Then Zoey hears it. The loud roar of a meteor. A tear falls.
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one besides you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
