Author's Notes

Hello again avid readers! At this point, I hope you're truly enjoying this light series. Thank you so much for all the kind words and moral support. I do take the time to read them all. So it does mean a lot to my progression in continuing this project. I know a lot of you have been waiting for this latest chapter, which should have been released last weekend. Sorry for the delay in delivery. A few factors came up that I don't care to bore you with. That being said, chapter 6 is still scheduled to release next week as planned. See my profile page for the release dates of future chapters.

Synopsis: Chapter 5 leaves off with Hachiman confronting Yukino about the evidence collected from Yumiko in regards to her moving overseas. After getting a proper answer to his concerns, he then has to deal with outside forces and internal struggles in relations to where he had left off with Yumiko.

OOC: I'm fully accepting that this fanfiction isn't going to please everyone. So I'm stating this now, this work is OOC. Again, I try not to diverge too much from character profile, but if it bothers you, I truly apologize. Hopefully that it doesn't take away from the story I want to tell.

Now that most of my thoughts are out of the way, Happy Reading, Enjoy, and Thank You for Your Support.

Chapter Five: Like I Even Care Enough!

A black void sets an environment for a young boy as he frantically looks around in disarray. Clueless to his given situation, he screams for his mother. But to no avail, his only voice echoes through the darkness.

Child_01: "Mom where are you? I can't see you! Mom?!"

The child continues to howl for his father next.

Child_01: "Dad! I'm scared! Where did you two go?!"

Tears form around his eyes as he starts to realize the lost situation he's been put in. As he begins to whine, a slight voice peaks the eight year old boy. My voice; I call out to him. He seems to hear my words as I assure him that things are alright. As I continue to observe his distraught expression from a distance, I second guess if he could actually hear me. My approach to him never seems to grant me a closer encounter. Another nightmare perhaps? Who is he to me though? The reassurance I thought he heard was to my surprise not from me, but from another. My ears listens into the silence only to hear a little girl's voice. Wondering who it is; she sounds particularly familiar. Appearing from the darkness, a small hand grasps the young boy's shaking palm.

Child_02: "Everything will be alright, big brother. I'm here with you."

Although her apparition-like appearance is brought to light, her face remains a blank expression voided from eyes. But the boy seems fine now as he embraces the much smaller girl into his arms. She continues to speak.

Child_02: "If we stick together, we'll always have each other in this darkness."

Child_01: "Promise you won't leave me?"

Child _2: "If it'll only help you get stronger, I'll be by your side, always."

As the two siblings embrace one another, tears finally break out of the eight year old boy's face. In embarrassment, he starts to speak in a choking manner; as though his words, all-of-a-sudden, becomes difficult to push out. But the conversation isn't exactly a light subject for two kids to be having.

Child_01: "Mom and dad… they're gone. They're always gone. It's my birthday today."

Child_02: "Do you hate me?"

Child_01: "What?"

Child_02: "Do you resent me, big brother?"

Child_01: "Why would you say that?! How can I hate you? You're the only one here."

Child_02: "Big brother, do you resent me?"

Child_01: "Quit saying that! I don't!"

Child_02: "Liar."

Child_01: "I'M NOOOT!"

Child_02: "Big brother hates me!"

Child_01: "STOP IT!"

Child_02: "How long are you going to keep making excuses?"

Child_01: "But… I'm… not…"

Child_02: "You're lying again. Big brother is a big fat liar! Liar! Liar! Liar."

The little boy covers his ears from his sister's constant jesting as I find myself following similar actions. Why is this affecting me on such a personal level? Do I know them? I squint my eyes towards their faces and realize that both kids hold only a dead expression of their faceless embodiment. The pair stare back at me with ill intentions on their hair-raising smile.

Hachiman: "STOOP IIIT!"

Outside my clubroom, I quietly stand idle to recompose myself from the meeting I had with Ms. Hiratsuka moments ago. I listen to the girls, mainly Yuigahama, chatter up a storm. She's not alone. Yukinoshita is here today. If Miura's correct, nobody knows about Hayama's situation. So poor Yuigahama is also in the dark. But today, I have to bring it up. We have to know the truth. Overhearing their conversation made me reflect on our history. Looking up to where our room number should be, stickers fill the placeholder to the brim. Hardly any space left for silly vandalism.

The significance of each sticker is a memory on it's own. The first memory comes to mind with the school camping trip with those elementary brats. Although there were a few hard discussions among our class, it ended up being kinda fun. Tsurumi reminded me so much of myself at her age. I think Yukinoshita would beg to differ and saw herself in the little girl, but I think at her age, we were all still molding our personalities. Who's to really say how Tsurumi will turn out when she reaches high school. Hopefully our time spent, helps her out in a socially acceptable way.

There was also that time when I asked them to help me out with student council work, never knew Yukinoshita would ever have us see her so vulnerable. We ended up letting out a lot of our heartfelt feelings that day. I don't think I had ever cried in front of a girl before… other than my sister of course. Both Yukinoshita and Yuigahama got a better understanding where I was coming from on a genuine level. Man, now that I think about it, I completely embarrassed myself. Hachiman, you crybaby.

Oh and how can anyone forget that ridiculous event we pulled on Valentine's Day. We killed multiple birds with one stone when it was decided to hold a chocolate baking session. Miura and Isshiki went all out for Hayama's sake. Then there was Kawa…whatever her name was and her wholesome baking session with her little sister. Kinda makes me wish that my sister should have been part of that event too. She woulda had a blast.

Then there was the high school prom committee too. That was a real pain in my ass. Dealing with Yukinoshita's mother is no easy feat. I can see why her daughter hardly accomplishes anything on her own. With parents like hers, how are you able to find your own identity? Then again, at least they're involved in their daughter's life; can't really say the same about mine and Komachi's. But with all the challenges thrown our way, we managed to pull it off in the end. Even though Yukinoshita felt that she was cheated into winning due to my underhanded tactics, she's reconciled with all of it. As a result, we grew that much closer in our friendship; well, the air has definitely changed around us since then. If it'd help her take a step in the right direction, then I can rest assured that my tactics were the correct actions to take. Which reminds me, there should be another prom event this year too. Unlike our neighbors in the West, ours will be held closer to the end of the school year. Even though Isshiki has more staff members this year, I do hope she brings me along for that event. I had a blast helping out last time. Maybe I should have taken her up on that Student Council position offer.

Anyways, back to the matter at hand. How would I go about trying to bring the overseas university matter up without throwing Yukinoshita off guard, or in a fit of rage… or whichever comes first? We've spent so much time together and yet nothing seems to have really changed between us; except maybe a mutual understanding of sorts. Sure we have the title of being friends, but how has my attitude changed since joining this club? If anything she did more personal growing. To say the least, I have more respect for that girl than when we first started off. Respect enough to say that what we share, is closer to being genuine. Maybe that's all I have to do. Be straight forward with her. It could make her upset, but it isn't necessarily the wrong move. And if we do share the same sentiments, she'll understand my concerns. Right? We'll soon find out as I head inside the clubroom.

I slide open the clubroom door to witness the two service club members goofing off. Yuigahama is messing with Yukinoshita's hair as she holds a mirror close to her face. Hair buns? Thinking of all the change I had with her, I forget that Yuigahama is a big part of her life too. They've gotten so comfortable with each other that Yukinoshita is letting Yuigahama mess around with her hair. If this situation happened when Yuigahama first joined, Yukinoshita would be throwing the biggest fit. Maybe even terminating Yuigahama's club membership on the spot. Then again, maybe she asked Yuigahama to do her hair. As chatty as she is, Yuigahama does have fashionable taste… that hair choice though. It's a bit kiddish to say the least.

I wonder if you adopt traits, like fashion, when you're hanging around popular kids. Or maybe it's a requirement? Who's to really say and why would I really care. Yukinoshita's hair buns resemble something that's on the tip of my tongue, but can't quite grasp what it is. Oh, that's right! Mr. Pan Panda and his panda bear ears. I guess it would make sense why Yukinoshita would want her hair styled in that way. She's the biggest closet nerd when it comes to Mr. Pan Panda. Right, just like panda ears. I idly stare at the two club members by the door as my awkwardness flew pass me. That's right, I need to start moving and quit being weird, but before I could move, the girl with the ridiculous hair buns calls me out.

Yukino: "Well, are you coming in or just going to gawk at me from over there?"

Hachiman: "Right. Sorry."

Walking towards my usual spot to take a seat, I opened my book bag to grab my latest novel. Yukinoshita lets out an 'Ahem' a couple times. I guess it's her way of getting my attention? Or maybe she's just parched. I don't see any tea made yet, so it could be just that. My eyes continue to be fixated in my novel.

Yukino: "AHEM!"

I look towards the girl with the ridiculous hairstyle.

Hachiman: "What's up?"

Yukino: "So how does it look? I mean, you were staring ever so intently just a moment ago."

Hachiman: "Sorry, I just didn't want to be rude. It looks… different."

Yui: "Hikki! Don't be so blunt! When a girl changes their hairstyle, they expect your full and honest opinion!"

But that was my full and honest opinion. Wait, forget that. I also wish to add how it looks ridiculous on her; but this is hardly the time nor place to get on Yukinoshita's bad side. Besides, I have a mission to accomplish with her. Minor bickering can wait.

Hachiman: "It looks different in a good way. Yeah, I can grow to maybe even loving it."

Yukino: "Really? Huh. Sounds creepy when you say it, but thanks… I guess."

She blushes slightly. Good going Hachiman!

Yui: "Ya see? That wasn't so bad, now was it Hikki."

Hachiman: "You're right. Plus it made me feel kinda good about myself."

Yukino: "You feeling good after giving a compliment? Your monotone voice lacks the excitement. Maybe seeking some counseling might help with that."

I know she's only being sarcastic with that line. In actuality, she's probably really happy about the compliment I gave her and it's why she needs to express some sick dominance over me. I swear, this girl and Miura, are two peas in a pod. Still, it doesn't change the fact that her words were hurtful if said to normal people. Ms. Hiratsuka forgot to lecture this girl on her abrasive choice in words. I know she's expecting some quick witted come-back from me, but I choose to hold my tongue. Ignoring the comment for the most part as I continue reading my book, her expressive face is filled with concern from the of lack of retorts. Instead, another compliment leaves my lips.

Hachiman: "Hmm… you could be right, Yukinoshita."

Yukino: "Okay, this is really weird. You're agreeing with me?"

Hachiman: "Well, I mean. I am a pretty dull individual. But I'd like to think it plays into my cool and aloof persona. Kinda like the broken hero type character in an anime or a video game."

Yukino: "Never mind. You're just as weird and egocentric as ever. Forget I said anything."

My ego isn't that big… It's all just an outwardly expression of my mask that I want people to see. If people knew how I really felt, I'd be in bigger trouble. Yuigahama grins at the both of us before she returns back to playing with Yukinoshita's hair. No time like the present as they say. I continue to stare at my book, but I'm no longer reading the words. My mind goes elsewhere, towards the answers I seek from Yukinoshita and her after graduation predicament.

Hachiman: "Hey, by the way. Yukinoshita, I heard something about you going over seas after high school. Is it…"

Yukino: "How'd you find out about that…"

She was quick to interrupt me. Yuigahama's expression went from joyous to ominous.

Hachiman: "Well, It was only a rumor I overheard is all."

Silence engulfed the room. I can't tell if I had upset her or if she's coming up with a logical reasoning of sorts. One things for sure, Yuigahama's facial appearance of worrisome and my feelings, are one and the same. After from what seemed like forever, Yukinoshita widens her lips.

Yukino: "It's true."

Yui: "You can't leave!"

Yuigahama's sudden frustration is understandable. It was the same for me last night, but now's not the time. I gotta remain calm and collected. Yuigahama's eyes start to swell. Maybe I could use her emotions to my advantage in all this.

Yui: "When were you planning on telling us? This is mega news!"

Counting on Yuigahama's frustration is making my job a lot easier. Honestly, I should have known she'd take the more direct approach. It's hard to keep track what was the best course of action. But it seems to have fallen onto my lap.

Yukino: "I felt that it was still too early to inform you two. And right now, I haven't 100% said I was on board with the idea of studying overseas for University. I planned to check out their facilities before making up my mind. Hikigaya, may I ask where you heard such rumor? Was it from Hayato, I assume?"

Yui: "What does Hayato have to do with all of this?!"

I don't believe for a second Yukinoshita tripped up on her words. If I had to guess, she too is using Yuigahama's emotions for her own benefit in talking more about her situation. She's wanting to tell us everything but hadn't the idea how to go about it. That's the vibe I'm getting from her. The reluctant girl continues her explanation.

Yukino: "Right, he got an invitation to the same University as me. So we were going to check it out together sometime. We just haven't gotten around to discussing when yet. But unlike me, he's showing more interest in the whole thing."

Yui: "Well, then let him go! Doesn't mean you should!"

Yukino: "Yuigahama. I'm flattered you'd choose me over him."

Yui: "Isn't that obvious?! So what's there to discuss?"

Yukino: "About that."

Hachiman: "About what?! What's the whole story, Yukinoshita? No more secrets."

Yukino: "I guess it's better I get this off my chest now, than have it back fire at me later."

The truth comes out; the reason why Miura's been acting up lately, and why I had to spend the last few weeks with that irrational girl. Yukinoshita doesn't pull any witty vocabulary and in fact, she's never been so straight forward until now. But what is it that her family has on her to make her act so revealing? I can only wonder as Yukinoshita shares her points with the two of us.

Yukino: "Well you see, my family and Hayato's spoke yesterday. It concerned the plans for him, since my family is the one in relations with the University. Initially, the University only handed me an invitation to attend, but after a few strings pulled by mother, Hayato was too handed an invite. That being said, the deal mentioned is, I was to be attending along side with Hayato. If I refused to go, then his bidding would be nullified."

Yuigahama's face grew grim as she was quick to speak soon as the brunette finished her informative explanation.

Yui: "That hardly seems fair! How did he even get involved? Did he just stroll up to you and ask? Where did he get the idea from? Also, what in the world are his parents thinking, having their son go across seas with a girl!?"

Yukino: "I don't think I have to remind you that we've known each other for quite some time; since we were kids. Our family has a strong relationship. Hayato got caught up in all the mix just like me. But when his father heard about my potential overseas venture, he met with my mother; mother filled Haruno in, and as soon as it reached Hayato's ears… I'm pretty sure I don't have to tell you what happens next. But just in case you're wondering, she talked him up in the idea. As a business development, it's quite the strong move on both families parts. It multiplies our families investments. Hayato's parents also kept spouting off how it's good for social moral; whatever that means. That boy and I hardly had a kinship of sorts. I guess they're hoping that we'd support each other on foreign soil with an added bonus of building a strong rapport with our overseas Yukinoshita clients… I'm starting to sound repetitive. But do you two understand what I'm saying? Or is it going over your heads? It's a lot of politics, so I get if you don't follow. But I'd like to think you two get the gist's to say the least. There were other details I left out but that really doesn't pertain to anything with the two of you."

Hachiman: "Certainly explains a lot with what happened yesterday."

Yukino: "I'm sorry, what are you pertaining to?"

Hachiman: "Nothing really, but Miura went off yesterday. On Hayama of all people. Publicly humiliated his good name."

Yui: "Hikki, you're right. It's no wonder why she's been acting the way she had been. She is infatuated with Hayato that she'd probably do what she can to make him stay in Japan. But Yukinon! I don't want you to leave us!"

Yukino: "Like I said, I have yet to decide. And I'm not one to start over in making new friends. It's hard enough that it took me this long to even get better acquainted with the two of you. But if we're being honest, I didn't know how to break this news to you guys. I got, well, scared. Maybe that's why I was putting this conversation off. So, sorry. I've realized that my refusal to speak with the both of you sooner, caused much trouble. I just figured after visiting the campus and declining the offer, I could put this whole mess behind me… like nothings happened."

Hachiman: "Well that's that. I guess Hayama's fate rests in your hands. And if we're talking about brownie points, I'm pretty sure Yuigahama and I combined have more points than he does."

Yukino: "You're absolutely right, Hikigaya. By the way, what's going on with you and Miura? Yuigahama said that you two are talking more? Wasn't that case shut?"

Hachiman: "Yeah, well. It's complicated. If Yuigahama completely filled you in about yesterday's class fiasco, then you can rest assured I ended it after we left Yuigahama's place last night."

Yui: "Wow! Really? I never would have guest. You two left with smiles on your faces. So then there was a mutual understanding to end it then?"

Hachiman: "Let's just say that she's better at hiding her emotions that we all thought. Things were said and feelings were pushed. More so her feelings towards Hayama and Yukinoshita going over seas together. I guess there's a lot of us that rely on your decision, Yukinoshita."

Yukino: "Wait, step back for a second. Hikigaya, you went over to Yuigahama's yesterday?

Hachiman: "Yeah, she had invited me originally last week to bake cookies. But for obvious reasons, I couldn't go."

Yukino: "Right."

Yui: "Sorry Yukino! I would have invited you yesterday but you were in a meeting with Hayato."

The girl pondered for a moment before she swerved back to the original topic or Miura's case.

Yukino: "I see. Don't worry about it. I was just making an observation. Anyways, glad the whole case dealing with Miura is over with. That girl really gets on my nerves. I don't know how you could stand it so much, Yuigahama. Hikigaya, did Miura know about him moving over seas prior to us accepting her request?"

Hachiman: "She did. Did I mention that she's pretty good at hiding her emotions? It's why she came in with that request to begin with. Why she's willing to even talk with me just to get her lover's attention. She really believes that if she could somehow sway his decision, that he'd think twice before choosing to go over seas. But last night was the first time she knew you were involved… well, Yukinoshita Incorporations. I somewhat feel sorry for her. Is that wrong? Sounds wrong when it's her of all people."

Yui: "It's not wrong Hikki. You've spent some time with her. So you know that there's more to her than her superficial exterior. She's probably the most reliable and honest friend I could ever hope for. Well, that is, aside from the two of you. But deep down I understand her pain. The sad part is, Hayato knows her true feelings but chooses to avoid or completely reject them."

Heard that a dozen times. But her being the most honest? I highly doubt that. Maybe most blunt compared to Yukinoshita and myself. But honesty, could've fooled me… well, she did in a couple occasions. I guess it's something that only close inner circle-type friends experience from the Fiery Queen. Not for someone like me.

Yukino: "I guess so, but there is some part of me that would love to see her suffer. But me going overseas doesn't grant me that wish since I'd be in New York. I'd miss out on the desperate look of her lonely face. Hey, I got an idea! You two send me a picture of her crying her eyes out. Better yet, make it a video! Just a three minute video of her balling will be perfect. It'll be like the ultimate victory over her!"

Hachiman: "I swear, the two of you could have been the best of friends in another life, no matter how you look at it."

Yukino: "Hikigaya, hadn't I made myself clear before? Do you really crave to be punished by me?"

Hachiman: "Err… right, sorry."

Slip of the tongue and I've already started to make witty retorts at the proud brunette. She smirks in enjoyment with one-upping me but I can admit that she can be cute at times. From nowhere, Yuigahama screams out in response to Yukinoshita's perverted joke.

Yui: "NO! I won't let you leave for something so trivial such as that! You're staying here forever! Even if I have to lock you up in my room!"

Hachiman: "That doesn't sound a least bit creepy, Yuigahama."

What's up with the sadistic jokes all of a sudden?!

Yui: "Hey! What's so creepy about best friends being together forever?!"

Best friends… am I part of that too? I guess it'd be weird to be part of an inclusive girls club. The closest I got to that would probably be Zaimokuza… I really need to make more guy friends. Oh right, Totsuka's one, but still have my suspicions. Lost in thought about friendship, Yuigahama surprises me with her next words.

Yui: "You too Hikki! I'm locking the both of you up! After high school, we're going to stay together forever!"

That'd be the day. I mean, what's the rate of keeping the same high school friends throughout your life? Something I need to research later. That being said, I'm glad I was able to get a sense of closure with this exhausting topic. Our little club got even closer. We don't get too many moments like these anymore. And now that we're in our final year, I feel it's getting to be even more rare. I discuss, to both Yukinoshita and Yuigahama, that Miura wanted me to keep this topic sealed from Hayama and his friends. And as great club mates go, the two of them hadn't hesitated my request. The least I can do for that girl is give her a reassurance that she hadn't broken her promise to that preppy boy. Why am I looking after her even after our ended contract? I haven't the slightest clue, maybe my heart grew a bit towards damaged people.

After club activities, the three of us headed our separate ways. Normally, Komachi would already be home. Although she attends Soubu High now, she's got her own life that's adjacent from mine. Didn't take her long to fit in either. She does have a winning personality. Something that the Home Economics Club are fully enjoying to the utmost. She could have chosen any club, but why Home Ecs? Because she insisted on it.

Mid terms are around the corner, but if I could speak truthfully, I hardly ever have to worry about my grades. As I continue to make my exit from the school grounds, there stands a familiar torso opposing me. Maybe I should head the opposite direction. I really didn't want to take the long way home, but I guess this instance can't be helped. I'll just pretend I don't notice him.

Hayato: "Hey there Hikigaya."

Just my luck. With a lack of enthusiasm in my voice, I respond to his somewhat positive demeanor.

Hachiman: "Hey."

Hayato: "About yesterday. I know you spoke with Yumiko about apologizing to me."

I know that you know that I know. Get to the point already. Why does he always have to bring up tension like this? Similar to Yukinoshita's relationship with Miura; Hayama is somewhat my Miura. My nerves just go haywire when he's speaking to me. I gotta be on my guard and get a hit on his reason for the abrupt meeting.

Hachiman: "You were out of line yourself, hotshot. Holding down a defenseless girl. Kinda pushing it too far, don't you think?"

Hayato: "I felt ashamed about it afterwards. Really I did. Never had I once thought about harming or insulting anyone, Yumiko to say the least. She's been nothing but loyal. What came over me yesterday, was not the person I wanted to project towards my colleagues in the last months of our senior year."

Hachiman: "I guess she really gutted you there. 'Loyal,' how cute. Most guys would find that a charming trait for a girl. A lover's quarrel perhaps? You two deserve each other. Really. I don't care how you project yourself on the outside, so give it a rest already."

Hayato: "I'm assuming she told you everything?"

Hachiman: "What makes you think that? I hardly hang out with the girl, let alone talk to her. Did you forget? I'm 'gross Hikio with freaky fish eyes' to her. I have little to no business with her."

Hayato: "These past few weeks, I couldn't help but notice; it feels that you're more involved with Yumiko. More active around her situations. It's rather suspect. Don't you agree?"

He's definitely perceptive as ever. Gotta play it cool though. This is something of a touchy subject that I just can't spill. Honestly though, why am I still making excuses to protect that girl. Why should I care what Hayato would do to Miura if he found out that she broke her promise to him?!

Hachiman: "Quit making assumptions you can't possibly understand. Tobe, Ebina, Miura, hell even you, all have come to me and my club mates with your high school problems in hopes that we can fix it for you. It's not out of the ordinary to see me lingering around now and then."

Nice one Hachiman, now you've made yourself sound like a creeper. Why'd I say that just now?

Hayato: "'Lingering around'? Then would you finally call us friends?"

What the hell is he even saying?! This is the very reason why he pisses me off. He knows my feelings towards him and his little gang. They're the last people I'd ever want to associate myself with.

Hachiman: "Don't joke like that. It isn't funny. Weren't you the one who flat out said you hated my guts? Well hate to disappoint pal, but the feelings mutual."

Hayato: "I wasn't kidding. I do hate your guts, but I'm also not kidding about this. Three years in the same class together, although we have our differences, you're one of the few people that understand me on a deeper level. Could even call it fate. I never asked for that. Yet here you are, getting to know the real me. Can't say I could ever let my guard down with you, but there's a certain genuine understanding between us, much I hate to admit it. My other friends, they're a bit one noted."

This guy is so pretentious. 'One noted?!' or maybe you've already judged them for who they are and because of that, you've revoked building any more meaningful bonds with them. But I'll let him figure that part out on his own.

Hachiman: "Don't mistaken friendship for professionalism. We're barely acquaintances, and now you're saying because I can see through your façade, that it's a genuine understanding? I can agree that we're on equal footing, more so than when we first met, but no way was any time we spent together ever genuine. More so contrite if I had to give it a definition."

Hayato: "Is that how you truly see things with us? This is rather difficult to talk about, nonetheless, it's disappointing to hear. However 'contrite' things are, I still cherish them genuinely; even now. Believe it or not. And due to that fact, I too get to know a bit more about you. For instance, right now you're probably thinking, 'You don't know anything about me.' But I assure you, I've gotten a better understanding of Hachiman Hikigaya, id est Hikitani with freaky fish eyes."

I shouldn't care about what happens to Miura, and I don't want anymore of my time to be wasted on this obnoxious jock. I know what he wants, it's just my pride of confidentiality that's stopping me from moving on from this whole mess. So the best course of action is to just give him what he wants, so that I can be on my way.

Hachiman: "Miura doesn't want you to go over seas with Yukinoshita. If anything, her feelings for you are more genuine than whatever you say we have. I personally am on board with that idea. As much as we butt heads, that stubborn Yukinoshita is still more of a friend to me than you nor Miura would ever be."

Hayato: "So you two ARE working together. That's all I needed to hear."

Hachiman: "Just can it. Sure she came to the Service Club for help, but none of us really knew the real reason. Given the circumstances, I was the only one able to offer her any real solution. The other two didn't have anything to do with this; nor do they know anything about your little secret you made that girl promise to keep."

Hayato: "I don't suppose you can tell me what exactly the two of you are up to?"

Hachiman: "Doesn't matter. It's over now. I told her we were done trying to convince you. After finding out what she was really doing, that is. As much as I want Yukinoshita to stay, it's hers and your decision to make. It literally is WAY out of my hands. High school is coming to an end, I can't be the one to tell you guys to forfeit your ambitions or whatever. That's why last night, I told Miura straight up. I can't be a part of it"

Hayato: "So that's how it is. In any case, I appreciate it. Thanks Hikigaya. Again, you've helped me without having me to actually do anything."

Hachiman: "Save your thanks. I don't ever need nor want your approval and gratitude for anything. Didn't do it for you. It just got too personal is all. Just so you know, there's no reason for me to rat you out to your friends. I'd rather see it all blow up in your face when the time comes."

Hayato: "Well, let's hope it doesn't come to that. But I do have to ask, when did you grow to care for the Fire Queen so much, Hikigaya?"

Hachiman: "What are you, insane? When did I ever say anything about…"

He cuts me off.

Hayato: "You said enough for me to understand. Especially with a morbid personality such as yours. Keeping such secrets for your own benefit? That doesn't exactly scream you."

Asshole.

Hayato: "As for Yumiko, I'd never been on bad terms with her. Nothing like this anyway. It's a first for me. A new side of her I hardly ever see. It's rather, what's the word you used earlier, 'charming'? Whatever you did, seems like you were hitting two birds with one stone. Since it was only you she told, I won't do anything to harm her reputation with me. So don't worry. That is, unless you want me to play wingman."

Hachiman: "Knock it off! This isn't a joke."

Hayato: "I wasn't joking."

Hachiman: "I chose to back out of her request because it got personal. You shouldn't be playing with other peoples affections. If she has adulation for anyone other than you, then she needs to figure that out on her own. You two really do deserve one another with how closed minded the two of you speak about other people's feelings."

With those last few words, we ended our time consuming conversation as Hayama finally releases me from his presence. But something tells me, I'm not done with him. Not by a long shot. If I have to deal with that boy during the rest of the week, it'd be too soon.

The following day after class, I made plans to meet up with Zaimokuza at the mall as he gets his hands on his copy of a new TRPG video game. Said something about needing a line buddy. Who knew he'd get so bored talking to strangers, him being the overly talkative type too. Those other people waiting in line would probably relate to him more-so than me, so what's the deal? Nonetheless, I agreed after classes. It's been a minute since I hung out with his familiar face anyway.

I take the escalator up to the second floor where GameGo, resides. As the store starts to appear right before me, I see a lack of a line of people. Hmm… maybe the queue was longer earlier in the day? I pulled out my phone to read a text received from my overly gratifying otaku friend.

Zaimokuza: [At the food court, comrade!]

Walking towards the food court, it wasn't long until I was able to spot my trench coat wearing friend. He's not in uniform, so he must have skipped class to get his hands on the game. I can't help but giggle at his otaku tendencies. Never change man. I'd be lying if I said I was never like him once. Even now, I act similarly whenever I pick up a new novel. Sure now-and-then I'd watch some anime and play video games. But I guess I'm a bit more casual about my otaku side. Ask me that when I was twelve or thirteen and you'd get a completely different answer.

I wave back at my friend as he holds up his purchased item in public. On the cover, it looked like some x-rated smut game, but it's only the selling point for guys such as Zaimokuza. Still, I was a bit embarrassed by his overtly expressive love for the game.

Hachiman: "Zaimokuza, how long did you have to wait for your game's release?"

Zaimokuza: "Ahoy comrade! I hadn't waited long, for the sea was calm this morning!"

Hachiman: "So you're telling me that you could have gone to class and still made it out in time to pick up a copy?"

Zaimokuza: "Incorrect, comrade! Hahaha! Only the weary of sailors are slow to act in case of such harsh waters!"

Hachiman: "Hmmm… good point. If I cared enough for a franchise, I'd probably skip class too. But it doesn't seem that it's as popular as you made it out to be."

Zaimokuza: "OH HOHOHO COMRADE! Popularity is hardly the issue. It's the quantity of such item being shelved in retailers!"

Hachiman: "So how many copies did they have?"

Zaimokuza: "Three!"

Hachiman: "Then I guess it was a good thing you came in early to get your copy. But why are you still here if you had already snagged one? I figured you'd be home playing the game. I mean, we coulda just met up at your place. Right?"

Zaimokuza stopped to think of his actions before realizing the time he wasted when it could have gone to playing his new video game.

Zaimokuza: "AHHH! Comrade! You are indeed the wisest of the two! I had prophesized that we would both play together so our experience is one and the same."

Hachiman: "Great excuse Zaimokuza, but you know that I don't really care too much for RPGs. I respect the mechanics and art, but it's not really for me."

Zaimokuza: "Yeah, I know. Can we still hang out and play a couple missions?"

Hachiman: "Of course man. Let's get outta here already. It's about to get crowded now that school's out."

Making our way down the escalator towards the exit, we run into Ebina. Our eyes meet as she ascends upward on her side of the escalator. She glances at Zaimokuza's GameGo bag as she starts to squeal profusely. The hyped girl continues to rise further up, when she shouts at us to meet her at the bottom of the escalators. She then rushes vigorously down the opposite side, trampling through a couple bystanders.

Finally arriving after so much unnecessary chunibyo tendencies, she gasps for air before screaming at the two of us.

Hina: "Hikitani! What's in the bag!"

Hachiman: "Seriously? For all that?! Well, I'm not in the liberty in disclosing that information with you. It's not my purchase."

Zaimokuza: "All's well comrade! Feast your eyes on the latest copy of Fire Crest: Shadows of Three Houses!"

Didn't think Zaimokuza had it in him to speak directly to a girl. Go you buddy. Then again, he might just enjoy bragging about his audacious purchase with a potential fan.

Hina: "No! Don't tell me you grabbed the last copy?!"

Zaimokuza: "Not quite! I waited perilously for thirty minutes as the shops opened! Then waited an extra ten minutes for the store clerk to find the newly released game in the back room!"

Why do I suddenly feel terrible for the store clerk?

Hachiman: "You went through all that for a title that no ones heard of?"

Zaimokuza: "Brother! Comrade! Do you think not heroic of my time endured pursuing such gold?!"

Hachiman: "It was forty minutes, and thirty of those minutes, was you waiting for the mall to open. Forget the fact that you were the first to get your hands on a copy, you also wasted more time afterwards by hanging around here. If you had all that extra time left and really wanted to tell me about it, you shoulda just taken a tardy and returned to school!"

Zaimokuza: "Your logic pierces my soul, comrade!"

Hina: "So you were the first to get it?! Does it mean that there should be more copies left on the shelves?!"

Zaimokuza: "Sorry fellow Fire Crest warrior, although I was the first. Only two copies were left and as the hours passed, both copies sold."

Dramatically falling to her knees, Ebina lets out her death cry.

Hina: "NOOOOO!"

I turn to the distraught girl and asked her about the game.

Hachiman: "What is it about this installation that makes it any different from the other titles in the same series anyways? I remember the ones they made for the portable console, but it was stupid difficult when it came to keeping your units alive."

Zaimokuza: "Indeed! But since the release of Fire Crest: Restless Sleep, permadeath had been an option. So your units can be easily revived! But such settings are trivial to ones true experience in playing an epic game!"

Hina: "Sure there's the option to turn permadeth off, but I do it so I can finally have my desired shipping! This is the first game where they allow boy-on-boy relationships! And I can't fathom not having my male MC getting it on with Demascus! He's just so dreamy! His blonde character design reminds me so much of Hayato! And guess who the male MC reminds me of, Hikitani?"

I look at the cover of the game case and notice a very aloof character with a large bone-like sword. His eyes seem so dead.

Hachiman: "… Umm… Tobe?"

Hina: "YOU! HIKITANI!"

Zaimokuza: "I disagree on the faction you align with! I would rather prefer to pick house Claudius! But the red house is also very enticing; maybe if the leader's design doesn't scream far right."

Okay, these two are losing me. When did this become political? How are we talking about boys love shipping in a TRPG?! Whatever the case, I felt Ebina did insult me just now.

Hachiman: "Well, I guess better luck next time, Ebina. We're off to try this bad boy out."

Hina: "No wait! Can I tag along?! I gotta know how it goes! Who knows when the next shipment will come in?!"

Zaimokuza: "I am not picking house Demascus!"

Hina: "It's alright. I still want to jot down some reference notes for my own story!"

Just how many stories does she have?! She creepily swings her gaze towards me as her glasses reflect a shining bright light. Why do I have a bad feeling about this? Forget the game, maybe she's taking notes on how two dudes hang out!

Hachiman: "Well, that's not really up to me. That's up to my friend here, Zaimokuza Yoshiteru.

Hina: "Oh I don't think we've properly met. Hello, I'm Hina Ebina."

And with those simple introductions, the otaku boy grew silent for the otaku girl as he starts to stutter his next words.

Zaimokuza: "Nininininice totototo memememeeet you."

Hina: "So, can I tag along?"

Zaimokuza: "It would be un-gentleman-like to leave such an avid Fire Crest fan to her own…"

Hachima: "He means to say yes"

Zaimokuza: "Affirmative, comrade!"

After a couple hours of gaming, I start to grow weary of my unfamiliar environment with Zaimokuza's living quarters. There's only so much replenished energy to give to one enthusiastic person. Not to mention Ebina makes it two enthusiastic people. He's been nervous this whole time since inviting Ebina to hang with us. It's probably his first time having a girl over. Honestly though, I'm so proud of him. He too is a senior, and even an otaku such as him, needs to take the necessary steps to gain Exp. Points. When did I start to speak in nerd lingo?

I sit back on the couch as I stare silently at the two gamers talk about their new passion. I take a glance around Zaimokuza's abode as I realize that he's collected more anime, manga, and figurines since I last visited. Not to mention the perverted waifu wall scrolls he hangs everywhere. Well, at least he's not ashamed to be who he is. Ebina doesn't seem phased by any of it. I guess that's why it's been comfortable up until now. If anything, she seems to be enjoying her time at this very moment. Then again, I wouldn't be so surprised to find her room to be just as perverse with such culture.

Ebina looks back at me then smiles. Wonder what that was about. The four eyed girl took her glasses off as she blows into the lenses then proceeds to wipe them down with her school uniform. Long eyelashes, I hadn't noticed up until now. she's got beautiful eyes. The two trailed from gamer talk and joined me. Ebina sat next to me on the couch as Zaimokuza stood up stretching like a yoga instructor.

Hina: "What's going on Hikitani?"

Zaimokuza: "Woman! That is my comrade! You shall address him as Hikigaya and only as such!"

Hachiman: "It's fine, Zaimokuza. Besides, she's been calling me that all day."

He really is good friend, clueless at times, but one of the good ones for sure. It's too bad we've only shared the same class during our freshman year. But because of him, I've made a life long friend. At least I'm certain we can remain friends in the long run. Everyone needs that one socially awkward butterfly. To Miura, I'm pretty sure that's Ebina… why is she occupying my mind all of a sudden…

Hina: "Well, it's just that, you seem kinda out of it. You tired? Or is it something else?"

Zaimokuza: "Hachiman! I am so sorry! You aren't use to staying at my place for so long. You're ill exposed to this much culture!"

Hachiman: " Zaimokuza! If I had a problem with where I was at, I would of made it clear from the start. It's not the wall scrolls or the overly voluptuous figurines you own, that is making me uneasy. It's just my internal battery."

Zaimokuza: "Of course! I knew that!"

Hachiman: "Sorry for being so boring, guys. I guess I'm just a bit tired."

Hina: "Does it have anything to do with Yumiko-chan?"

Just like that, the hairs behind my neck stand up. Why would she bring her up? I hadn't said anything nor is she supposed to know anything. Did Yuigahama say something to her? My mind runs wild with a million thoughts.

Hina: "I see your brain turning, Hachiman."

Zaimokuza: "Halt harlet! Only I and his close friends can be so friendly to use his first name!"

Hina: "Zaimokuza. You're funny. Did you just call me a harlet? Lolz!"

With those words, Ebina shut my friend up as he starts to grow flustered, with his cheeks turning a slight pink. Whatever her reason for knowing, I can't really deny it or she'd become more suspicious.

Hachiman: "What makes you think it has anything to do with her?"

Hina: "Just a hunch. You two seem to be a bit more chatty than usual. Especially after the fight a couple weeks back. I can tell, you know. The two of you are trying hide it from everyone else, but I'm one of her best friends. I know when something's up with my girl. The way you ran after her the other day. It was kinda romantic. But Hikigaya… don't be getting any wrong ideas about me! You and Hayato are the ultimate ship!"

Hachiman: "Okay, well I see this conversation isn't going anywhere."

Hina: "If I'm not mistaken, you two were in a fight. Something about Hayato. That's all I can get from the both of you. Plus she was absent today and yesterday. I'm starting to get concerned about her too. So this is my way of hopefully trying to help the two of you."

Hachiman: "There's nothing to fix with the two of us though, because there really wasn't anything going on."

Hina: "Is that really true? Or are you making excuses?"

Making excuses? Where have I heard that before?

Zaimokuza: "My comrade isn't as robust of a talker such as myself. He likes to keep his secrets. But I accept him for that. You could say to most people, he emanates the Hedgehog's Dilemma. Thus introduced in New Genesis Adamgelion."

Hedgehog's Dilemma? Really? First of all, New Genesis Adamgelion wasn't where that originated from. It was from Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher. The Porcupine Dilemma was known as an allegory to humanities trials and tribulations towards each other's intimacies. So I lack the necessary qualifications to be friendly towards others. It's no problem for me though. I enjoy my own solace.

Hina: "Oh yes! That's SO on the mark! Truly the perfect example to describe you, Hikigaya!"

Zaimokuza: "You continue to surprise me with your peak knowledge of such amazing anime!"

Hina: "Duh! I'm a major Shinju x Kuwaro ship!"

Zaimokuza: "No! Everyone knows Reia is best girl and perfectly matches with Shinju!"

Hachiman: "I am nothing like that guy! That anime is overrated anyways! Couldn't you have picked a different character to reference me from? Last I checked, I take responsibility for my actions. Unlike that worthless Shinju."

Hina: "Seems like our little hedgehog is stuck in a pickle. Zaimokuza, what do you usually do to unwind in stressful situations?"

Zaimokuza: "Such simpleton emotions head not worry me! I furiously write my light novel that sometimes spans thousands of words a day!"

Hina: "I didn't know you write too?! We gotta read each others works sometime!"

Zaimokuza: "Agreed, Comrade! Hahaha!"

Hachiman: "She's your comrade now too? And Ebina, What are you getting at exactly?"

Hina: "Just helping out a friend. You did help me out once with Tobe, if I remember correctly."

We're friends? Is it that easy to make friends? I hardly hang out with the girl. But I never did have beef with her. Before I knew it, I felt that certain genuine response and caring from the four eyed girl. Is this a form of love? It must be. I think.

Hina: "For Zaimokuza, he loves to write. When I need to clear my head, I actually run up and down my street screaming my lungs out."

Hachiman: "That's a bit eccentric."

Zaimokuza: "A battle cry! I support that decision! I must try this sometime!"

Hina: "The point is, people have their own way of relieving their worried minds. And a quiet individual such as yourself, you probably think a lot. Maybe even too much. So sometimes, you gotta just let it all out, or write it out, or whatever Hachiman Hikigaya does. Kay? Hikitani? Comrade?"

The other night, Miura was going through a lot of stress. With everything bottled up inside. Her trying to hang out with friends and changing up topics, was her way to stray from serious discussions. But when we sat at that park bench, her bustling mind just overflowed through out talk. Could she still be stressed because of how I left things? Did I cause her more problems when I decided to forfeit my assistance? I must have. But Yuigahama reassured me that it could be that she's feeling bad for slapping Hayama. I can't 100% be sure. But I left her there with a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe that's why I've been feeling on edge and tiring rather quickly. The problem is, I don't know what Hachiman Hikigaya does to repress a constantly active mind. Ebina opens her lips to speak.

Hina: "You don't need to figure it out now, but sometimes the answers are a lot simpler than you think."

Zaimokuza: "What she said, comrade!"

Hachiman: "Whatever. By the way, Mira x Shinju is the one true ship."

Zaimokuza: "ONLY IN THE REBUILD MOVIES, COMRADE!"

Hina: "WHHHAAAT!? I SO PINNED YOU TO BE AN ASUNA SIMP!"

In the previous days, Yumiko Miura, aka Queen Bee, hadn't been buzzing around school. I can't stop recalling the last time we had our conversation. It's been almost three days. Maybe all her hope actually dissipated… No chance! She's too prideful for that. Who can really say, it has little to do with me. Except for the fact that Hayama made an honorary stroll to my commoner's desk.

Hachiman: "What are you doing in my neck of the woods, your highness?"

Hayato: "I don't mean to cause any trouble but, what do you think is going on with Yumiko? She's been absent for three days now."

I've noticed that already, idiot! Prince Charming occupies an empty seat across from mine.

Hachiman: "Beats me. Like it's any of my concern."

Hayato: "Weren't you the last person she spoke with? I could only imagine some of the harsh things you've said to her."

Hachiman: "So speaks the person that pinned her against the wall."

The paralanguage he displays are subtle, but the tone shifts in his voice and slight grunts make it obvious that he's getting rather worked up. So early in the day too. I can tell he didn't walk over here to make any trouble or cause a scene, yet toying with him brings me so much pleasure; sometimes I find myself holding back my smiles so I don't give off my sense of satisfaction.

Hachiman: "She's probably taking a break. It's good for everyone if you think about it. When she comes back from her little vacation, it'll be like nothings happened. Your friends would only ask about her absence; forgetting all the events that happened prior to her return. She could even be doing this for your sake. Ever think of that? I mean the girl is head-over-heels for you. Plus, you have a certain image to hold up. She's a girl madly in love with Hayato Hayama after all."

Eyebrows pointed downward and hands stiffened. His voice becomes more uneasy.

Hayato: "How is it you always know what to say? I don't really care about your theories and hypotheticals. What I know is that she hadn't been here for the last few days and you were the last to speak with her. So I'm telling you, do something about it!"

Hachiman: "I've got a better idea, why don't you or your friends call her up. I don't have nor want her contact info. Don't care to know where she lives either. If you ask me, it'd be best to leave her alone for now. Let her deal with this on her own terms. She has a habit of being overly prideful."

Hayato: "Don't you think I've tried that? She won't pick up. Hina and Yui too, haven't gotten through to her."

Hachiman: "With all the people you do save, you always seem to come up short when it comes to her. Why is that? Last I checked, you're not in love with Miura. So why do you care so much? Because she's a dear friend? You must be pretty awful relying on someone like me to help solve your problems. But it wouldn't be the first. Right? She's your friend, so deal with it yourself. Unless that is, you're too scared to face a lovestruck girl. Or is it that you know that she'll only demand the truth from you. Clock's ticking, what are you gonna do, leave her hanging; after three years of nothing but devotion? Some protagonist you turned out to be. Can't even win over the girl."

Hayama's stiffened hands start to ball up. I got under his skin. Let's see how much he'd learned from the last time he lashed out. So much for Prince Charming. I can't wait to make an example of this asshole. Taking advantage of me like I owe him any favors. As anger triggered us both, Yuigahama made her way towards us and flipped the whole situation on it's head.

Yui: "YaHello! You two look pretty tense. Strange seeing you talking to Hikki before class, Hayato."

Hayato: "Believe me, it was a mistake coming over here."

The agitated boy stood up from the empty desk and walked off.

Hachiman: "Gee, I wonder what's eating him. He's always so serious."

Yui: "Coming from you of all people!"

Hachiman: "Alright, I can take a hint. I admit I'm no better."

Yui: "Did it have anything to do with Yumiko?"

Hachiman: "Why wouldn't it be? He's demanding, that's for sure. He comes and asks me for information one day, then tells me to go fix his broken friendship the next. Seriously, how foolish can one person be? By the way, thanks again for not blabbering about Miura's secret."

Yui: "Well duh! She's my friend. I will never do something like that! But anyways, I think you're missing the point Hikki. It's not even really about Hayato, or you, or me, or anyone for that matter. It's about Yumiko and what she's going through right now."

Hachiman: "Please, that attention seeking chick? I hardly care."

Yui: "That's not true at all. You said a few days ago that you felt sorry for her."

Hachiman: "What of it? Any decent human being would too. So what are you getting at?"

Yui: "I'm really worried too, Hikki. She hadn't reached out to me or any of her friends. We've even tried going over her place the other day to see if she'd let us in."

Facing the floor with her feet pointed inward of each other, she then grabs the frills of her skirt. She really is scared for her friend. I guess it must be this bad if Hayama is demanding favors and Yuigahama is this shook. And just the other day, Ebina also raised her concerns. I wholeheartedly believe this'll clear itself up. But maybe, I can help a friend out.

Hachiman: "Fine, whatever. I'll try getting through to her. No promises though. Hurry up with the address already."

Yuigahama grabs a blank sheet of paper and start to write directions on it. I really hate this.

This neighborhood is rather nice. So her house should be around here somewhere. Yuigahama sure sucks at giving directions. Her map could use a little help. Even a child would be able to draw a more useful picture. If she would have only memorized her address, I could have used the GPS on my phone. Instead, I'm reliant on this caveman method of reading directions from a half-assed looking map. In front of me stands a two story house with a small gate around the yard. I guess this would be considered the royal castle? Here goes nothing. Literally.

Passed the gate and walked towards the front door, I push the buzzer which at first glance, thought was a doorbell. A small screen pops up as it displays my face onto the intercom. Talk about fancy. I hear someone's voice at the other end. Sounds like it could be her mother or a maid. Does she have a maid?

Mrs. Miura: [Who is it?]

Hachiman: "Ummm, hi ma'am. I'm from Soubu High and hoping I have the right residence. This is a classmate of your daughter's. She's been absent the last few days so I've come to deliver some school work on behalf of our teachers? I also have to go over an assignment Ms. Hiratsuka wanted me to inform your daughter."

Mrs. Miura: [It'll be just a minute.]

This IS the Miura residence. Thank goodness. I guess I owe Yuigahama an apology. The map was a success. Hopefully this strategy works. After hearing that Yuigahama and her friends tried coming over but got rejected, I purposefully didn't give out my name in risk Miura tells her mom that she doesn't want to speak with me. The 'unidentified student' is the best approach. The front door slowly opens as Fire Queen Miura, herself, answers the door. She's in an overly large pink shirt that reads "Lucky" and some neon green gym shorts. She has a hand to her waist as she looks me in the eyes unimpressed while letting out a 'tsk'.

Yumiko: "How pathetic."

End.
