Zoey stares at the scene in front of her when she steps off the elevator and into the penthouse apartment. The only person other than Oliver that she recognized was Clark. Clark, however, looked between Oliver and Zoey, wondering how much she exactly knew. "Give me a few minutes," Oliver tells the others, then walks over to her. He pulls her into a soft kiss. "I was meeting with my team, Zo."
Zoey raises an eyebrow. "Your team?"
"My team."
"Mhmm. Yeah, I don't want to know. That way when you get arrested, I don't have to plead the fifth."
Oliver places a hand over his heart. "Zo, you wound me. I won't get arrested."
"Mhmm. Yeah, well, as your future lawyer I don't want to know. So, I'm just going to put my stuff up and go meet Austin for lunch. I have to convince him to give me a summer internship at his firm."
Zoey turns to walk up the stairs. He grabs her arm. "Zo, I promise we'll be careful."
"Good. I still do not want to know."
Zoey walks up the stairs and disappears down the hallway. Oliver turns to Clark. "Zo's been into this whole don't tell her a thing since she declared political science as her major. She's not even a lawyer yet and she's acting like one. Drives me crazy."
Oliver frowns seeing the box sitting on the desk. He and the rest of his team were riding high on the successful completion of their mission. A LuthorCorp facility where they were experimenting on people had been destroyed without anyone being hurt. Bart was safe and recovering from being held captive by Lex. "Zo!"
Zoey walks out of the kitchen and hands him a glass container filled with cookies. "Freshly baked for your trip."
Oliver motions to the box. "What is this?"
"Six highly encrypted laptops. They're all connected to a Queen Industries satellite that very few people know about."
Oliver chuckles. "I thought you didn't want to know anything."
"I don't. But that doesn't mean that I can't help out in my own ways. Like when the board and department heads ask me questions."
Oliver tenses. The last thing he wanted was for her to have been covering for him. "Zo—"
"I'm not upset, Ollie. About any of it. You're trying to save the world. You're trying to make it a better place. You've already made Star City a better place." Zoey wraps her arms around his neck. "However, I will be upset if you don't come home in a couple of weeks for Lex and Lana's engagement party. Because there's no way in hell I'm going to that train wreck alone."
Oliver runs a hand down her back. "So, you're dragging me to the train wreck?"
"Damn straight. Luckily Lana didn't feel the need to make me a bridesmaid." He leans down and softly kisses her. "Promise me that you'll be careful."
"I promise."
"You know this is a little awkward for me," Oliver softly tells Zoey as they sit down at the long table. Granted, he had just spent three weeks with his team in Europe infiltrating and destroying another LuthorCorp facility that had been conducting experiments on people. She shoots him a look and he can't help but smile at her. "What? It is."
Lex stands up, tapping on a glass of champagne. "Could I have everyone's attention, please?" The room falls silent. "I just wanted to thank you all for joining us to celebrate. Over the years, I'm sure some of you have placed a few bets on whether I'd settle down. But this couldn't be further from settling. I'd like to toast my beautiful fiancee for making me happier than I thought I could ever be."
The doors burst open and Clark, wearing darker clothes than his normal bright red or blue, walks in with Lois. "Looks like we missed dinner," he loudly says.
"Clark, what are you doing here," Lex questions. One could hear the anger in his voice.
"Come on, Lex," Clark replies, walking around the table. "You didn't think I was gonna miss this, did you? And look. My own mother would rather raise a glass with the enemy than stand by her own son."
"Clark, you're not yourself," Martha tells him from where she was sitting a few seats down from Zoey and Oliver. Oliver shoots her a look. He had never seen Clark act like this before.
"It's okay, Mom. You're more a Luthor than a Kent these days anyway. I mean, Dad's been, what, dead a year? But who can blame you for joining the race with Lana to see who's gonna add the Luthor monogram to their name first?"
Lex starts to move towards Clark, but Lana places a hand on his arm. "Lex, he's obviously on something and he wants us to react. Please don't."
Clark stops behind Chloe's chair and leans down. "Chloe, I can't say that I'm surprised that you're celebrating here. After all, once Lana's off the market, all those years of unrequited pining may actually pay off. I can't say I haven't thought about."
Zoey places a hand over Oliver's. The last thing she wanted was for an unhinged Clark to expose Oliver's secret because her husband felt the need to defend her.
"And Zoey," Clark says, slamming his hands on the back of her chair. She jumps. "The closest thing I had to a sister. And Lex's ex-girlfriend. I wonder if Lionel hadn't been spying on you if would've you have still dumped him? Or would you be sitting in Lana's seat? Of course, that's after Bruce Wayne didn't want to have anything other friends-with-benefits relationship with you. But then we get to Oliver. Hey, can you be a gold digger if you're both rich? Or does your pussy only allow people with a billionaire dollar bank account in it?"
Oliver glances at Zoey. She was staring straight ahead, hoping that no one noticed how much what Clark had just said had affected her. And while he hadn't known Clark as long as the others, he got a feeling that there was something affecting him.
Clark walks towards where Lana was sitting. "And you. You know, I got to hand it to you. If you were gonna rebound, why not choose the one person that I hated the most? But, I mean, come on, Lana. The joke's over by now, isn't it?"
Lex stands up, finally having enough of what was going on. "Clark, I think you've done damage. Why don't you leave?"
"I'm not done yet," Clark snaps. "Besides, Lex, I haven't given you my gift yet." The silent table watches as Clark grabs a glass of champagne off the table. "Congratulations on sealing the deal." Clark reaches into his jacket and pulls out a rattle. "To baby Luthor." He tosses to Lex. "The real reason that Lana's marrying you."
Lex glares at Clark, then runs at him. Though, Clark easily dodges him causing Lex to crash into a table of champagne glasses. "Lex," Lana exclaims. She turns to Clark, anger written on her face. "How dare you?"
"C'mon, Lana, if no one else in this room is gonna save you from Lex, then I will," Clark tells her, grabbing the brunette by the arm and dragging her towards the door.
Lois, who had been standing by the door the entire time, steps in front of Clark. "I don't think so. Lana is your past. I'm your future," she declares.
"This is the present," Clark counters, then walks out of the room pulling Lana with him.
Oliver watches as tense and confused silence falls over the room. Zoey takes a shuddering breath. "I believe this party is over," she says, standing up.
Clark stood out in the sea of high-powered attorneys wearing black or navy suits. His red jacket and blue plaid shirt didn't help him blend in at the law firm. "Clark?" He turns to find Zoey, wearing a dark green dress and black blazer, standing there. He had spent part of the day doing an apology tour, though he mostly just talked with Martha, Lois, and Chloe about what happened. He was thankful that Lois didn't remember anything. "What are you doing here?"
"Oliver told me you were here," Clark explains.
Zoey lets out a sigh. This was the last thing she had wanted to talk about. She had told Oliver that she knew that Clark didn't actually mean anything he had said. But it wasn't something she had exactly believed herself. She grabs his arm and drags him down the hallway to Austin's office. "Can we borrow your office for a few minutes?"
Austin nods and stands up. "I need to talk to a couple of associates. Five minutes?"
Zoey nods and Austin walks out of the office, pulling the glass door closed behind him. She turns to Clark. "Say whatever apology you need to say. Because we both know that deep down…way, way deep down, that's actually how you feel."
"Zoey, I'm sorry," Clark tells her.
"You're not the first person to call me the billionaire slut and you won't be the last. You're just the first person to ever say it to my face."
"Zoey, I never meant—"
"Stop. We both know what you're going to say. You didn't mean it. It was the red kryptonite. Blah blah blah. I'll say it's fine even though it's not fine and we both know that you actually meant to say it because it's how you feel. I'll tell Oliver you apologized and that everything is fine."
Clark stares at her. "Except it's not."
"No. It's not fine."
Clark nods. "For what it's worth, I am sorry, Zoey."
"I know."
Zoey yawns as she steps off the elevator and into the apartment she shared with Oliver. She was annoyed that he had taken off with his team at the last minute to deal with another facility they had found. She had been spent the afternoon and evening at Lana and Lex's wedding and reception. Her phone rings and she pulls it out to see Bruce's name on the screen. "Shouldn't you be hosting a shitty party tonight," she greets, flopping down on the couch.
"I am," Bruce replies. "How was the wedding?"
"Boring. I'm very annoyed with Oliver. He had an emergency to deal with at Queen Industries so I had to go by myself."
"Are you gonna to be in Gotham any time soon?"
Zoey sighs. "Bruce…"
"If he really loved you, he wouldn't make you feel guilty for visiting friends in person."
"It's not like that. And you know it."
"He doesn't trust you. If he did—"
"I don't trust myself around you," Zoey interrupts. "I enjoyed what we had. And I would go back to it in a heartbeat, Bruce. When I'm around you…all I can think about is how much I want you to push me against the wall and fuck me. That's not fair to either of us."
Bruce is silent for a few minutes. "You're right. It wouldn't be fair to either of us. Is Max hosting his Fourth of July party this year?"
"As far as I know he is."
"And will I get to see my friend there?"
"I'll be there."
"I'll see you then."
"Okay."
Bruce hangs up and Zoey drops her phone on the couch next to her. She turns her gaze to the ceiling.
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black
