Author's Notes

This chapter was made from scratch rather than my already batched chapters. Basically, I didn't like the pacing from where the original chapter 7 took place after chapter 6, so I decided to rewrite the whole thing. The old chapter 7 will now be the new chapter 8. That being said, this chapter was a lot of fun to write unexpectedly. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Apologies for some grammatical and spelling errors. I didn't take too much time editing this one compared to previous chapters.

Thank you for all the wonderful comments from the previous chapter. I've read and took account of your replies. Hope to speak with you soon. If you have a Spotify, take a listen at my playlist for this fanfiction. I have something called synesthesia, it's where your imagination morphs into certain sounds you hear. So when I write, I often listen to music that sparks a scene in my head. Kinda like watching a music video. Anyways, more info is mentioned below of the Author's Notes. Just look for the asterisk(*).

Synopsis: With the midterms approaching closer day-by-day, Hachiman has to now focus on getting some studying done. But before he has the chance to get any studying done, a new request has been brought to the Service Club's attention, with Isshiki at the helm of the request. Now the pressure piles on our protagonist in keeping up with his studies and also catering to the request of the Student Council President. This is considered part one of two of the Summer Festival Arc.

OOC: I'm fully accepting that this fanfiction isn't going to please everyone. So I'm stating this now, this work is OOC. Again, I try not to diverge too much from character profile, but if it bothers you, I truly apologize. Hopefully that it doesn't take away from the story I want to tell.

Now that most of my thoughts are out of the way, Happy Reading, Enjoy, and Thank You for Your Support.

Chapter 7 - Do Bunnies Dream of Hedgehogs?

Hachimam: "So let me get this straight, you're wanting to throw a summer festival two weeks from now? Exams are right around the corner, how are we supposed to keep up with our studies and help out with this request? What happened to the extra help that the student council recruited?

Isshiki: "Well you see, I underestimated the amount of work. I figured it'd be something as light as the prom we hosted last year. And that was just on a whim!

Yukino: "Light? That event was nothing but stress.

Isshiki: "Only because you and Hachiman-senpai took it upon yourselves to one-up each other. But after the approval, it was pretty easy pick'ins!"

Yui: "How were you even able to get approval for this?! Normally we just hold a giant culture festival during the final trimester."

Isshiki: "For normal high schools, but I want to make Soubu High stand above the rest of the other schools! The prom event launched so many possibilities. And honestly, I'm not smart enough to come up with all these crazy ideas. But after that successful moment, the principal of the school spoke with me and requested that I come up with more events like the prom. He too shares my same sentiments of Soubu High's recognition. So he insisted that when me and my committee team comes up with ideas, to run it by him. This so happens to be one of the ideas he approved."

Hachiman: "Yeah, but right before exams? We have a week after the exams. Why couldn't he have approved it then?"

Isshiki: "Ehh… hehehe. That was more my fault. I kinda forgot about that final week after exams; by the time I remembered, it was kinda already too late. Some classes had already scheduled field trips that last week and they'd miss out on the whole festival. Plus the principal would find me incompetent if I went back to beg him to change the dates. It just won't look good for anyone!"

Hachiman: "You mean it won't reflect good on you, Ms. Student Body President."

Isshiki: "And the school too! You know how disappointing it would be if students knew they wouldn't be able to attend the festival after I tell them the dates have changed?! Heartbroken! Complete agony and heartbroken, Hachiman-senpai! I can't live with that!"

Yukino: "Sigh*. Regardless, you still have a lot of learning to do, kohai."

Isshiki: "I'm sorry guys! I honestly didn't want to rely on anymore help. Please forgive me Yukino-senpai."

The reluctant school president bows to her upperclassman, swiftly lowering and raising her head constantly. Before giving Isshki our final answer, our club room door slams open. Our sensei/club advisor, Ms. Hiratsuka, barges in on our conversation; to think these moments still surprises me with her interposing behavior.

Hiratsuka: "I think that's a wonderful idea! I dub this to be an official Service Club activity! You three will help out our little school president here."

Isshiki: "Hey! I'm not that little anymore! I grew much bigger, I'll have you know!"

Isshki squishes her breasts together as she looks distraught from our sensei's unconnected retort. It's not exactly what she meant, but I guess Isshiki took it spitefully.

Hachiman: "Easy enough for you to say. How do you expect us to do well on your midterms if we're too busy running a summer festival?"

Sensei looks over at me as she struts a few paces towards my direction and gets in my face. I can smell her sweet scent. Too close!

Hiratsuka: "I know how capable you are, Hikigaya. You'll be fine. And that goes double for Yuigahama also. For Yukinoshita, I know we're in different classes, but don't forget that her entire class is filled with Soubu High's finest sagacious students."

Yukino: "How shrewd of you to judge my educational standing."

Hiratsuka: "Don't give me that quick lip, Yukinoshita. Test my wrath and I'll bring your sister, Haruno in on this."

Yukino: "Sorry ma'am. I misspoke."

Ms. Hiratsuka smirks as she displaces her superiority towards my hardheaded female counterpart.

Hiratsuka: "Right. Well, I guess that's that."

Yukinoshita puts on a sour face as she turns to me to whisper something vile about our club adviser.

Yukino: "Extortionist."

Hikigaya: "We're talking to a woman who bribed us with ramen. Remember?"

Hiratsuka: "Hey! I can hear the two of you! Who ever said I was a perfect role model!? Anyways, this is an official order from this club's adviser! You're hereby required to lend a helping hand to make this summer festival absolutely memorable that reflects positively for Soubu High School! Got it?"

The three of her club members involuntarily agreed in unison as Ms. Hiratsuka holds a giant grin on her face. Like she's gonna even help out with this entire mess.

Hiratsuka: "Anything else I can do to help, Ms. President?"

Isshiki: "Umm… No! Thank you so much Ms. Hiratsuka-sensei! …Well, there is one more thing. Is there any way that I can bug some of your other students if I find that I need more hands?"

Hiratsuka: "How about I print you out a list of my students that I won't have to worry about grades affected due to the upcoming midterms. You'll have my permission to recruit any of them if you ever need the extra help. Sound agreeable?"

Isshiki: "Yes! Thank you so much!"

And just like that, we began to work on the logistics of Soubu High's first ever Summer Festival.

Since the "date" last week, Miura has been bugging me more and more. This week alone she's made it a prerogative to break away from her group half way through the lunch hour to sit with me and chat. Do I mind it? Yeah I kinda do. I miss my quiet time. Aside from Totsuka, I kinda hate the idea of idle chitchat. Looking down at my bento lunch with half of the food gone, my stomach is satisfied and full. I guess I wasn't that hungry today, I can always save the rest for later. Yet it's unusual for me to not finish what Komachi prepares; it is my little sister's cooking afterall. I stare over at Kawasaki as she praises her bento. She seems overly joyous with her lunch, that stars literally shine from her eyes. I'm betting her brother made her that food. Komachi did mention that Kawasaki's brother had joined the Home Economics Club with her. To think Kawasaki was a violent person, it's her younger brother that's the threat. Taishi…

Yumiko: "Hikio, who exactly are you staring at?"

Without notice, Miura blocks me from aimlessly eying Kawasaki. I look up as she places both her hands on her waist with a sour tone in her voice. But what else is new with this girl? With a feeling of foreboding from a distance, I look back at Hayama. Indeed, both him and Yuigahama are looking over my direction again. But why wouldn't they, it's not like Miura's new ritual sunk into everyone's psyche yet. Even I'm still not used to this change of pace. I turn face back at Miura to answer her.

Hachiman: "I'm not staring at anyone in particular. Just thinking about how delicious my sister's cooking is."

Yumiko: "That so?"

She then grabs a seat to make herself comfortable as she settles right in front of me. My chopsticks in her hands, the overly congenial gal starts to pick at my food. First a cherry tomato... that, she can have. Told Komachi I was gonna try harder to eat better, but still too difficult. Next she went for the omelet, then the rice… WHY AM I JUST LETTING HER EAT MY LUNCH?!

Yumiko: "You're right. It's really good. I gotta meet this sister of yours. Did she add a hint of vinegar to the rice?"

Hachiman: "Hey! This is my lunch. I didn't give you permission to eat any of…"

Miura takes a piece of the omelet and shoves it in my mouth while smiling sinisterly. This vile woman! There's only so much I can stand when it comes to dealing with her!

Yumiko: "Relax, Hikio. I'm only teasing."

Hachiman: "I coulda choked just a moment ago. You really gotta account for your actions. They have severe consequences."

Yumiko: "Talk about OVERLY exaggerating. Like seriously Hikio. But if that ever happens, I'd have no choice but to give you mouth-to-mouth."

My cheeks uncontrollable turns a bright red from her delusional response. Miura follows up with obnoxious laughter.

Yumiko: "OMG! Your face! I'm still only teasing, you perv, but…"

She places a hand on her mouth as she starts to emanate a soft pinkness in her cheeks. I stare at her fingers that's caressing her supple lips. The lip gloss she has on, makes them more alluring. I look away but her nautical scent intensifies my awareness of her presence. If I'm not gazing upon her, I'm reminded by her pleasant scent. I guess it's true that girls do smell better than boys. I hesitate to lead the conversation.

Hachiman: "…But what?"

Yumiko: "It's nothing…"

Hachiman: "It's never 'nothing' with you."

Yumiko: "Is that so?"

She breaks a soft smile as though she's pleased with my answer.

Yumiko: "Whatever! Forget all that now. How's the volunteering going with Isshiki?"

Hachiman: "We're still behind. I'm in charge of logging the submitted reforms, from each class' approved selection for the festival, in a digital spreadsheet. As for the manual labor, that has yet to begin since a lot of the equipment hadn't arrived yet. With this pace, it wouldn't come to a surprise if we're left cramming things the day before the actual event."

Yumiko: "Yui did mention that the three of you seemed stressed lately."

Hachiman: "Stress is an understatement. I intended to give myself some time for studying since exams follow right after, but when I think I've scheduled the time to do so, I find myself passing out."

Yumiko: "You have my number. Gimmie a call some time and come over. We can have our own little study group. I can help keep you up all night."

Miura winks at me flirtatiously, as I find myself increasingly bashful all over again. I crouch inward while my shoulders start to turtle up to my neck. Nerves are kicking in. I don't know how much more of her teasing I can take.

Hachiman: "You seriously need to stop with this whole façade. It'll only hurt your reputation. I can't deal with your constant flirting."

Yumiko: "Like I mentioned before, the only person that matters to what I'm feeling, is you. As for my flirting, I'll stop when you take the hint."

Hachiman: "You're too cruel. Mind saying that a little louder so they can hear you in the back?"

Yumiko: "I can be cruel if that's what you're into. How 'bout it? Would you take the hint then?"

The blonde gal leans in closer to my face as her scent becomes more potent. I can't stop her, not with lustful intentions on my mind, yet I try my hardest to neglect such beguiling feelings for someone that shouldn't matter to me. From a different angle, it could appear to others that she's going in for a kiss. Her skirt starts to raise higher from her seat. Doesn't she care if she's exposed to the entire class? I look around and find that no one is really paying attention to us. Maybe I'm just blowing this situation up a lot more than it needs to be. Yet, I had never seen her act this way before. Not towards him either.

Hachiman: "Hey cut it out already. You're too close."

Yumiko: "Have you finally realized how I truly feel?"

Hachiman: "Like I even know how someone would truly feel."

How would I? I don't even know how I "truly" feel. Especially with the troublemaker sitting before me.

Hachiman: "You were never this forward with Hayama. Your adoration for him was more reclusive. So what's to say that this isn't all but another ploy of yours?"

Yumiko: "If you're asking why I'm more forward with you, it's because you're an entirely different person from him. Hayato had his reputation to worry about. I couldn't jeopardizing his ambitions because of my selfish desires. I figured he'd eventually feel the same. But you, you're the opposite aren't you? You pride yourself being a loner with little to no reputation expected from anyone but yourself. Hachiman Hikigaya just does what he wants. So I'm going to do what I want until I have you. That answer your question?"

Hachiman: "Not really… the feeling has to be mutual."

Yumiko: "Yeah, to hell with your feelings, you don't even know what you want."

Hachiman: "Err…"

Yumiko: "…Sorry. That's… not what I meant to say. I was just thinking out loud. What I meant to say is, I'm not giving up on you. Because… you're still making excuses. Aren't you."

Excuses? How am I? What excuses is she referring to? Miura hadn't technically answered my question. Avoiding admittance to a ploy certainly makes this a ploy. Right?

Yumiko: "Quite honestly, this seems to be more my pace, Hikio."

What the hell does she even mean by that? Does she get riled up from the constant deprecating of my wellbeing? I hate pushy girls, they scream "No Good!" From out of nowhere, for a second time, a couple more bodies punctuate between me and my only space as Yuigahama and Hayama stand perpendicular to Miura and I.

Yui: "You two look to be having an enjoyable conversation. Mind if we join in?"

Hayato: "So it may seem. Sorry to interrupt, hope we're not intruding."

But all of you are intruding! And don't apologize if you're just going to do whatever you want! It renders your apology pointless and without merit.

Yumiko: "Hey Yui."

Yui: "So what's up guys? What are we talking about."

Yumiko: "Nothing too serious. Right Hikio?"

Why is she looking at me for approval. Like hell I'd know what this whole interaction was supposed to mean.

Hayato: "From where we were sitting, looks like the two of you have gotten more intimate. Ebina almost popped a blood vessel. Is it safe to assume you two are an item now?"

Hachiman: "Don't hold your breath. There's nothing, nor there would ever be anything, going on between the two of us."

There Miura, hope that answer suffices. I turn my gaze away from the two prying classmates as my eyes gravitate towards the girl in front of me. Miura's eyebrows curl as she bites down on her lower lip, looking away from me. She seems… upset… is she mad at me?

Yui: "Hikki, you're acting suspicious!"

Hayato: "I would have to agree with Yui on this one. Care to explain?"

Yui: "Yumiko?"

Yumiko: "It's as Hikio says. There's nothing going on between us. Just a silly prank! Get it?! Gah!"

The Fiery Queen abruptly stands up from her seat then barges back to her own desk; turns away from me and her friends to glance over at the window sills at the opposite end of the classroom. Her lips spout out something but I'm too far away to make out any sounds, but it looked like she said "jerk". Why do I feel hurt, as though I was responsible for her being upset all of a sudden? I shouldn't care.

Yui: "Sorry Hikki. I think we shouldn't have come over. We probably made her upset."

Hayato: "That being said, you can't deny that she's been giving you more attention lately. Ever since your date last week."

Hachiman: "Like we just said, there's nothing going on between us. Just a dumb joke. She'd never really go for some loser like me. So drop it already."

Yui: "Hikki. Is that how you really see yourself? Even after all this time?"

Hayato: "That's enough Yui. It's for him to figure it out on his own. And Hikigaya, I don't think I have to remind you about your self worth. Believe me when I say that not everyone is against you."

I wish I could say something. I wish I could tell them everything. But the words won't come out. They're perfectly laid out in my head, but my mouth won't open. Doesn't matter anyway because by the time I muster to even speak my mind, the lunch bell chimes in, concluding lunch hour. Ms. Hiratsuka enters our classroom and orders everyone back to their seats. If they all just left me alone, I wouldn't have to hear any of their concerns, problems, my feeling of guilt, etc. But because more people start to surround me, I get engulfed in all this unnecessary noise. Why can't anyone see that I just want to be left alone. It'll be better for everyone if they did, but rather, things get aggravating.

The days that followed after that conversation, Miura had finally stopped coming over to speak with me. And aside from the usual Service Club work load with Isshiki, the week ended as how it usually does. I guess the only thing that hadn't gone back to normal are my one-on-one interactions with the school president. She's only ever really around me when there are other people in the same room, she'd then leave before anyone else makes an exit. I feel that she really is avoiding me and after a while, I've come to accept that I'll never get the promise she gave me when we last spoke. But it's fine, I had my hunches from the beginning with Isshiki, so it shouldn't come as a surprise. Yet, pain still exists within me from the falsity of it all.

It's Friday and school let out about an hour ago, but as expected, I knew we were going to run late with our workload. So Yuigahama, Yukinoshita, and I stay late to help out in anyway we can. About an hour into these reforms from the multiple classes finally, I've made a dent. I'm pretty sure I could finish the rest of the spreadsheet by next Monday. For now, I need to stretch my legs. Guess I'll help out with whatever else needs tending to. I walk over to Yukinoshita to see if there's anything I can physically assist with.

Hachiman: "Hey Yukinoshita, I've finished with the reforms for the evening. What is there left on your side?"

She was given the task as moderator. Basically managing a team of people, including Yuigahama and myself, to help with whatever needs getting done.

Yukino: "Oh? Great timing. We've got a few boxes of decorations that were sent here by mistake. If you could give Sagami a hand with them, it'd make things go by a lot faster. They're to be delivered back to Madame President's Student Council Office."

I look to the desk where Yukinoshita is leaning and find a few oddly shaped boxes on the floor.

Hachiman: "Those boxes by your feet?"

Yukino: "Those would be the ones, Hikigaya. And thanks. You're always so efficient."

The slender brunette lets out a soft smile as the evening light hits her silhouette. I don't know if it was due to the compliment she just gave, but she's radiating a certain beauty by standing there smiling. I can almost bet in certainty that she's comfortable taking on jobs like these. It suits her, if not, tames her at the very least.

Hachiman: "Sure thing. I just can't wait until this is all over with. Where is Sagami?"

Yukino: "He had already started making his way back to the Student Council room with a few of the boxes. You might be able to catch up to him if you hurry."

I lean over to pick up the rest of the boxes that Sagami had left behind and make my way out the classroom, but before I could depart, Yukinoshita calls out to me.

Yukino: "Wait, Hikigaya."

She walks in front of me and arranges my school tie in a delicate matter.

Hachiman: "Umm… Thanks. I guess."

Yukino: "You never wear a tie. So I was surprised when I saw one on you today. It's a bit crooked though."

Hachiman: "No really, I do appreciate it. I don't make it a habit on putting something so constricting around my neck. But I figured if I wear it a bit more loose, it wouldn't be so bothersome."

Yukino: "You're changing slowly, Hikigaya. I'm glad."

The brunette looks up at me after she finishes straightening my tie, then puts on another gentle smile across her radiant face.

Walking through these empty hallways during the evening is somewhat relaxing, despite the boxes I have to carry. It reminds me of a time when I was still a child. I would always lend a helping hand without any hesitation or worry. It was just something I was accustomed too. I guess now that I think about it, I was trying to fit in. Did what I could to get the praise from others, but at that age, kids never had a care in the world. And I got along with most of my classmates. It was Kindergarten; never did go to pre-k. I was actually jealous of the kids that had already established bonds with other kids from pre-k. Sure it was unfortunate, but it wasn't anything world changing. Just something I resented. It was all too silly and I grew out of it obviously. Yet the memory somehow found its way back to me. Maybe it's from this golden light from the evening sun. There's something so nostalgic during this time of day; golden hour.

As I approach the Student Council's room, I snap back to the present. Isshiki will be in there. What do I say to her? I manage to jimmy the door open while still holding onto the boxes as I make my entrance. Huh, no ones here. Placing the boxes next to her desk at the far end, I walk over to a large window that oversees most of the school grounds. It's a nice view. And to think, if I had agreed to her proposition last year, I would have been right here… with her, staring out this gorgeous view everyday.

From a distance, I hear some noise coming from a room that's slightly open. Sounds like Sagami. Wonder if it's Isshiki he's talking to? I make my way over nonchalantly, but before making myself known, I hear Isshiki's voice say something staggering.

Isshiki: "Like I said before, I'm going to need a bit more time."

Sagami: "I understand that, but how long are you going to make me wait? I've told you how I felt. When can I expect an answer from you, President?"

Isshiki: "I… don't know yet, Sagami. We're on the council, how would that look to everyone else? We've got to consider these things."

Sagami: "With all do respect Madame President, to Hell with what everyone else thinks!"

Isshiki: "...But we..."

Sagami: "...I quit the Gamer's Club because I believed in what you were doing. The outlandish ideas you spouted out, your high-strung nature every time you'd speak in public, all of it. I continued to watched you grow into a more capable leader. You're still clumsy as ever and you still go against my advice, even though you're the one asking for it. Next thing I knew, I fell head over heels for you."

Isshiki: "Your sister, what would she..."

Sagami: "...Who cares! That Hikigaya friend of yours, if he were to confess to you right now, you'd probably be head over heels for him. He graduates at the end of the school year, Isshiki. Plus, he's not really a good fit for you. Sure he helped you during your first year, but he needs to sort out his own problems. You can't always be the one to lend him a helping hand. Your relationship... it's co-dependent."

She stands silent without any affirmative yes or denial.

Sagami: "I can't be like him or Hayama, but if you just spare me a response, then maybe… I can move on from this constant aching. Things took a turn with both of them, and now you're stuck in the sidelines, so I get it. Join the club. But, I can try to make you even happier, given the chance."

Isshiki: "I really do appreciate everything you've done for me. Helping me become a stronger leader, staying up long nights preparing my speeches, planning out and coordinating my ridiculous plans. Believe me, I see you as a valuable asset to the Student Council. I'm just… scared."

Sagami: "Scared of what? Missing your chance with someone you may never be with? When I'm here standing in front of you? …Isshiki."

If I were to describe Isshiki, she was always dependent on others. As tough of a girl she plays out to be, she's the complete opposite. Her uprising and popularity didn't happen on a whim, it was all thanks to her team that believed in her. From the sounds of it, Sagami was her Yes Man. If I had decided to take her offer those many months ago, would I have been standing where he is today? I could only wonder as my heart continues to pound with agony, rage, and bitterness. Was this a moment I skipped out on? It hurts to hear them speak. I walk way from the door as swiftly as I can. Can't take it anymore. As I draw nearer to the exit, I managed to trip over a box, making a loud commotion. The pair burst out the door as they see me on the floor. Crap! Isshiki runs up to me then bends down to assist.

Isshiki: "Hachiman-senpai? What are you doing here?"

Play it cool Hachiman. Lie… lie… lie… Nothing can be genuine with her anymore. Everything is just a front now.

Hachiman: "Sorry, I was delivering a few boxes upon Yukinoshita's request. Opened the door and tripped over a few of the ones on the floor."

Isshiki: "Senpai! You really need to be more careful. Did you just get here?"

Hachiman: "Yeah. Why you ask?"

Isshiki: "Oh it's nothing! Sagami and I were just finishing up a meeting. Here, lemme help you up, silly."

She's… not technically lying. I look over at Sagami. The look on his face was nothing I'd ever seen before. It's as though he was told he's about to die from a malignant disease. Although he faces away from our situation, it's easy to tell his glasses had fogged up due to the extensive water build up from his eyes. I… can't be responsible for this. It's not my place to intervene. Isshiki stretches her hand out to me with a warm smile on her face. And at that moment, I wondered how my kohai was able to smile like that; nothing like Yukinoshita's smile. Without rationalizing about it, I swiftly swat her hand away; rejecting her offer of help. Did my body move without me thinking? Is this guilt or Jealousy? A friend I considered dear to me… lost to him. And yet his emotions are a physical reflection of my own torn heart.

Isshiki: "ehh… Hachi…"

Hachiman: "Thanks. Isshiki, but I can get up on my own."

I rise from the floor and try to stray from Isshiki's innocent looking face. It isn't her fault. I don't believe anyone's at fault. It's just the nature of this situation. Sagami had one thing right. That things have taken a turn with me and Ms. President.

Hachiman: "Well, gotta head back or else I'll hear an earful. Yukinoshita could be the slave driver sometimes. Later."

I swiftly make my awkward exit and run out on the two council members. Hopefully I didn't make anything worse for Sagami. He deserves an honest answer from Isshiki, if she ever wants our friendship to continue. Soon as I get to the end of the hallway, I hear Sagami call out to me.

Sagami: "Hikigaya! Wait up!"

Hachiman: "Hey, ummm… Hatano? No… Sagami… right? I always get the two of you confused."

Sagami: "It's Sagami."

Hachiman: "Sure. So what can I do you for, council member?"

Sagami: "You heard everything didn't you!"

Hachiman: "Don't have the slightest idea what you're referring to."

Sagami: "Don't play dumb. I know your type."

Hachiman: "I'm sorry, come again?"

Sagami: "Hachiman Hikigaya, the reckless loner that doesn't take any accountability for anything he does! You pride yourself on the work you accomplish but when it involves others, it's nothing but empty wordplay in order to get your own selfish agendas met! You're a disgusting type of person."

Hachiman: "So you think you have me figured out. Is that it? And what are you, a white knight of sorts?"

Sagami: "Just someone who's completely honest and straightforward to everyone I come across. My accomplishments speak for themselves and it doesn't involve manipulating others! But regardless who you are, it's you that Isshiki fawns over. I didn't come running after you to start anything. I just wanted to say this to your face; don't do me any favors! I wanna win Isshiki's heart by my own volition. The same way how I've been doing things!"

Hachiman: "Well you're in luck. I'm not doing anyone any kind of favors. Like you said, I only care about myself."

Sagami: "This is the only time I'm going to say this to you, thank you for not saying anything to Isshiki. She promises to give me an answer during the Summer Festival."

Hachiman: "That's nearly a week from now. You think you could stand to wait that long, council member? You nearly broke down a moment ago."

Sagami: "We'll all be busy with preparing for the festival, so I'll try to keep myself occupied until then."

Hachiman: "Right. Well whatever she decides, know that it won't have anything to do with me. Later."

Making my way down the empty hallway, Sagami takes the last words before running back to the Student Council Office.

Sagami: "By the way, Hikigaya. Next time you lie about entering the clubroom prior to listening in on our conversation, don't leave your boxes stacked on the opposite side of the room; furthest from the entrance. Doesn't make for a consistent argument. Luckily, Isshiki hadn't realized it."

He's nothing like Hayama. Complete honesty, but comes off as an asshole. And yet his body of work is admirable. There's no doubt about that, especially as of late with his involvements in the Student Council. Isshiki should be so lucky to have Sagami be her right hand.

Saturday arrives as I lay in my bed sulking about the prior week and the coming workload for the following week. Even after I complete the rest of those reforms, there's still so much work to do. And every time my day ends, I don't have the energy to study for finals. Thankfully, I have the weekends, but I don't want to get up from this comfortable position. I check the time. It's a quarter to 11:00. Komachi probably left for her study group already. I guess I should take after her and really hit the books. Right! After managing to get up and opening a textbook, my cellphone buzzes. Huh? A text from Zaimokuza? Wonder what's it all about. I click on his message as I read the exaggerated text.

Zaimokuza: [COMRADE! I am in need of your assistance ASAP! Please hurry over, for I may be lying on my deathbed in a matter of moments! Steadfast My Comrade!]

Ugh, I really don't think it's anything serious… I try my hardest to ignore the text. I have more important matters to attend to. But a few minutes go by and I find myself not being able to focus on my studies. ERR! FINE! WHATEVER! Guess I'll make studying in the evening my undertaking!

Hachiman: [omw]

Hachiman: "Bu-bu-bu-bunny girl? Why?"

Yumiko: "Eek!* HIKIO! GET THE HELL OUT!"

Before I knew it, a large textbook comes hurling towards my handsomely chiseled face.

Hachiman: "Zaimokuza! Details! What the hell is Miura doing in your room dressed like that?!"

Zaimokuza: "Haha! I'm glad you asked, Comrade! You see, me and Ebina-san have decided to join forces in this summer's Comiket event!

Hachiman: "You say that with pride, as though you weren't screaming bloody murder from your text message you sent me! The hell you want me to do about this?!"

Ebina chimes in as her glasses takes a shine from some unknown light source. She wasn't here a moment ago. Did she appear from a summoning circle or what?!

Hina: "Hahaha! I can answer that part! You see, I need you to model for my original characters!"

Hachiman: "First of all! Where the hell did you come from?! And second, why do I have to volunteer for this?!"

Hina: "Because, all the other males turned me down. You're literally our last option. Zaimokuza unfortunately doesn't have the luxury of having more than one male friend."

Hachiman: "As if I had an option to begin with!"

Hina: "That's true! You don't have an option! Feeling helpless yet?"

Hachiman: "Your abrupt decision has me by the throat! There's no space for me to breath here!"

Hina: "Good! Just how we like it! It's best you just accept these unfortunate events. Who knows, maybe to some, it may mean the world."

Hachiman: "You mean to you and that pathetic excuse of a friend!"

Zaimokuza: "Comrade! Again, I'm sorry I dragged you in this. But we could really use your help."

Hachiman: "Ugh* I'm here aren't I? But tell me why Miura's here? It could have been anyone else, right!"

Hina: "About that, the inspiration for my heroine came to me at the mall during your passionate date. WHO KNEW SHE HAD SUCH A NASTY BODY! I MEAN DID YOU SEE THOSE THIGHS WHEN SHE TRIED ON THAT MINI SKIRT! COME ON HACHIMAN! DON'T TELL ME YOU WEREN'T GUSHING OVER SUCH LEWDNESS BEFORE YOU!"

Hachiman: "Ebina, you're crazy. I hope you know that! And I don't need a reminder! I nearly died that day!"

Hina: "THEN WE SHARE THIS BURNING SENTIMENT TOGETHER!"

Hachiman: "No, no we don't. Because I can control my urges! Besides, I thought you were only into boys love stories?"

Hina: "That's a common misconception, my dear Watson! I'm interested in boys love MOST of the time! I have other fantasies other than that. HeeHeeHee… But teaming up with Zaimokuza for Summer Comiket, I had to make some sacrifices. In exchange, our vision becomes that much more tangible!"

Zaimokuza: "And profitable! I'm expecting to sell out! So reserve your pre-order now, Comrade!"

Hachiman: "I'll hold off for now… thanks. I'm just glad it's not Hayama in there in a bunny outfit."

Hina: "AHH! Just the thought of having Hayato in a bunny outfit as Hachiman swooshes down to sweep him off his bunny feet; I can only bare to imagine, as it play on loop in my head! ARGH! So upsetting that he turned me down!"

Hachiman: "...Right. Anyways, how do you expect me to model for you if Zaimokuza and I can't even enter his room without getting the living life beaten out of us?"

Hina: "Leave it to me! All I have to do is talk some sense into our high-strung friend. I'm pretty sure she'll come around."

Ebina then vanishes to the opposite side of the door as it closes slowly. Loud noises erupt from Miura, and from the sounds of it, don't think Ebina is getting through to her. This may take a while. Zaimokuza kneels patiently on the floor as he waits for his female comrade to return. I sit next to him waiting.

Hachiman: "Next time, don't call me for something so trivial."

Zaimokuza: "Deceiving you was never my intention, Comrade. I have never been in this type of situation before."

Hachiman: "Having two lovely ladies at your house? I get where you're coming from. Why your place though?"

Zaimokuza: "Ebina-san's place is a lot smaller. Plus her parents are very strict about having boys over."

Explains a bit why she has an unhealthy obsession with boys love stories, I guess.

Zaimokuza: "Comrade, I can hear them on the other side."

Hachiman: "Quit being a creep."

Zaimokuza launches from his knelt position as he speaks passionately about his call to action.

Zaimokuza: "But this is the part where the anime protagonist peeps at the other side of the door! Do you not wish to partake in such rare opportunities?!"

Hachiman: "Doesn't that part usually end with the protagonist being launched through the ceiling with a bloody nose and a black eye? Sit back down before you embarrass yourself even more!"

Finally, after about a good fifteen minutes, the door to Zaimokuza's room opens. Miura sits with a blanket over her once exposed shoulders on the couch. Assuming she doesn't appear too revealing in front of everyone. Zaimokuza's nose starts to trickle blood. Pervert… And yet, am I mentally prepared for this though? Modeling isn't exactly part of my arsenal of skills.

Hina: "Okay Hachiman. Sit next to Yumiko-chan while Comrade and I discuss a couple things."

Zaimokuza: "Right! Let's turn my script into a reality!"

The two seem to have hit it off, much more strongly than I had anticipated; since the last time we hung out. I reluctantly walk closer to the bunny girl on the couch as she blushes profusely. She doesn't quite turn her gaze away from mine, but she does avoid eye contact by sporadically looking around the room.

Hachiman: "I can sit on the floor if that'll make you feel more comfortable."

Yumiko: "No! It's fine! Sit here!"

With her permission, I place myself next to the distraught Fire Queen of Soubu High. I try not gawking at her out of respect for her unsettling appearance and instead put on a stoic face that looked directly at Ebina and Zaimokuza.

Hachiman: "Sorry... For earlier."

Miura hops into place, like an actual bunny, with a look of astonishment.

Yumiko: "You mean with what you said in class before?"

Hachiman: "Err… no. I meant for barging in without considering that you'd be on the other side in an exposing bunny girl outfit. I should have seen it coming, but it never crossed my mind you'd be in Zaimokuza's room."

Sarcasm for the road. How the hell was I supposed to anticipate anything like this?! Maybe if he had messaged me with actual details, I would have… not come. I guess there's a reason why he worded it the way he did. Now that I think about it, Ebina was probably the one behind the whole thing. Zaimokuza seems genuinely apologetic, but Ebina is overly joyful about my arrival.

Yumiko: "Are you being cheeky with me?! Like hell if I knew I was gonna spend my Saturday here of all places. Nonetheless spending it with you of all people."

We sit not speaking to one another for a while until her lips widen.

Yumiko: "It's not like you deserve to see me in this outfit."

Is she really pouting at me right now?

Hachiman: "I suppose, and yet here you sit."

Yumiko: "You honestly don't know what you did wrong?"

Hachiman: "How am I to know? Was it really because of what I said? Am I wrong?"

Yumiko: "I guess not technically... But the way you said it. It hurt me. I'm still a girl you know."

Hachiman: "And here I thought you had thick skin."

I glance over at Yumiko for a split second as she begins to blush after my comment. Cute… Plus, that aroma isn't helping; it's laced with other fragrances. Perfume? I ogle at her salacious upper body and legs. The outfit itself is very detailed, but looks to be a bit strained.

Hachiman: "Your outfit, it seems rather snug on you."

Yumiko: "It's a bit... uncomfortable. But that's why we're here. Get this, Hina actually went to that Kawasaki girl to learn basic sewing. She's been adamant on making cosplay as of late. She bought this outfit not knowing it was too small for me. I swear, her perverted mind is to blame for all this! Now she says she's going to make adjustments to the outfit... It's kinda freaky that you can tell, Hikio. Did I just catch Hikio's lustful eyes feeling up my body?"

Hachiman: "Shut up! Don't say it like that. You're making it sound like I'm a pervert."

Yumiko: "Hahaha! I thought you were a pervert from the very beginning."

Hachiman: "The beginning?! You mean since…"

Yumiko: "…Since freshman year when I first laid my eyes on you. Sorry for judging you like that. But you were the creepy quiet kid."

Hachiman: "According to most students, I still am."

Yumiko: "Well I don't mind it as much, can't say the same for your friend here. Half naked anime girls on his walls and figurines everywhere? Such the otaku. Has he no shame?"

Hachiman: "That's one of the best qualities about Zaimokuza. He's honest with who he really is."

Yumiko: "To each is own I guess. I for one, believe that there are things you shouldn't expose. The world is always judging, Hikio."

So being an otaku is a complete turn off for her. I can use that to my advantage. Just gotta tell a little fib with an overexaggerate story.

Hachiman: "Sorry to disappoint, but I'm the same way. Sure I'm a bit harder to read, but I'm a complete otaku with anime waifu scrolls on my bedroom walls and figurines everywhere!"

Yumiko: "Really?! I knew it!"

Hachiman: "Wait, what?!"

Yumiko: "You SO reek of an otaku pervert!"

Hachiman: "Well, now you see why your reputation would only sully if you were to keep hanging around me. Plus, you don't wanna read the light novels I read."

Yumiko: "I've read some of it. It's not as bad as you're making it out to be. You're not trying to trick me, are you?"

Hachiman: "I am a total otaku! And when exactly did you read my novel?!"

Yumkio: "None of it matters to me, Hikio. I've already looked passed it."

DAMNIT!

Yumiko: "Just give me a fair shot. It's all I want."

Hachiman: "'Fair shot?' Compared to who?"

Yumiko: "Compared to your other love interests. Duh!"

Hachiman: "I don't have any. It's not like I have a harem or anything. I think you're confusing me with Hayama. He has girls flocking towards him all the time, yourself included."

Yumiko: "Once upon a time, Hikio. Get that straight. Regardless, don't deny the subject. You really don't see Yukinoshita, Yui, and Isshiki as girls after your heart?"

Hachiman: "Where did this come from all of a sudden?"

Yumiko: "Like seriously! Not even joking with you right now. How am I supposed to compete with them?"

Hachiman: "You don't need to. I genuinely don't have any romantic feelings towards any of them. Friends, sure, but nothing more. If you're asking me if I find them attractive, then sure. Each of them has something I find alluring, you included. Doesn't mean I go out of my way to make it a big deal."

Yumiko: "You find me… a-a-a-attractive?"

Hachiman: "That's exactly what I mean. You're blowing things out of proportion."

Yumiko: "Then, would you consider me a… friend too?"

How am I supposed to answer her? I don't consider her anything more but a nuisance at this point. But I can't tell her that. Ms. Hiratsuka said to choose my words more carefully. I feel Miura wrapping her arms around mine as she rests her head on my shoulder. A bunny girl is resting on my shoulders… I can't move… just great. It's not long after until she intensifies her flirting. She twiddles her fingers with mine as her voluptuous upper body is pressing against my arm. My heart beats rapidly from where I sit. She grins tempestuously. Gulp*

Yumiko: "…well?"

Holding my ground, I force a disgusted look on my face and tell her what I really think about her; disregarding what my sensei had lessoned me.

Hachiman: "You're a nuisance."

Hoping she'd get angry and upset but rather, she chuckles at my answer.

Yumiko: "Having someone like me, turn your world completely on its head, I can see your point. I too would think I'm a nuisance. Well since you've gotten to know me a bit better, I'm sure you figured out that I love it when you play hard to get."

Hachiman: "Right. How did that go with Hayama again? You had what, three years?"

Yumiko: "Ugh!* Can you like, not... I swear, one of these days when you're needing me, I won't be there. And it'll all be thanks to that sharp tongue of yours."

Hmmm… hopefully it happens a lot sooner than later. Glad to know there's an expiration to Miura's constant leeching. She starts up giggling again.

Hachiman: "What's funny this time?"

Yumiko: "Nothing. But I do have to thank you, Hikio."

Hachiman: "Why's that?"

Yumiko: "Whenever I was with Hayato, I could have never been this expressive. With you, it doesn't matter whether I get mad, or tell you something so outlandish, or just idle chitchat like this, I'm able be more… honest with myself. Like how Zaimokuza is. Ever consider you just have this effect on people you meet? I don't have to worry about being too careful with you. It's no wonder I have strong competitors."

Hachiman: "Can you not compare my life to some harem protagonist? I've already been compared to a pathetic hedgehog. My love life isn't something I'm just open to discussing with anyone. My colleagues are my colleagues. So I get a long with more females, it's because I don't really understand guys all too well. Doesn't mean the girls in my life are in some harem with me."

Yumiko: "You really are a lot more dense than you let on. All the big words and you almost fooled me to thinking you're actually smarter than me."

Hachiman: "I take offense to that. I pride myself as being an introverted intellect. Love is understandably the last thing on my mind. Besides, I'm no pretty boy with this face."

All those times I've been made fun of for having freaky fish eyes, or being compared to some thug. I can't change how I appear. It's what I was born with. So I lie to myself to help heal my self consciousness. "I am handsome. Who could not love this smug face? I find that I'm more attractive than your average male. Etc." It's but a blanket to hide my insecurities. Told myself that if I say it enough, maybe it'll come true.

Yumiko: "It's grown on me. What you do have, is this bad boy look goin for you. It's kinda…"

Now what's she getting at? Sorry if I can't portray a "goody-two-shoes" or have a face that screams Top 10 most attractive entrepreneurs, or be like some JPop celebrity.

Hachiman: "Kinda what? Vile? Gross? Scary? I've already heard it all. You're not gonna hurt my feelings. So what is it…"

Yumiko: "...Hot!…Gah!"

A slight tingle in my fingers soon travels to my chest. What is this weird reaction. I'm not "Hot." If I am, no ones ever blatantly said to my face before. Speaking of faces, Miura turns red as she buries her own face into her lap while the blanket slowly falls to the floor, exposing her gorgeous back and nape. She's whining as though regretting what she had just said momentarily. Immediately, I'm reminded of the fitting room incident. She sneaks a peak at me but I catch her glances as she quickly hides her face from mine. How can I not look at her after that response?

She's acting all cutesy as she quivers from the slight chill from the A/C running, but instead of going for the blanket that sits on the floor, I instead rub my palm on her back. Why am I doing this? Again, my body is moving on its own, yet this urge to comfort her occupies my head. Just like the time when I patted her head after she revealed her concerns to me, before hopping back to her home on one sandal. I won't deny that she's attractive, even more so than most of the girls in our high school. Even more so in this very instant. But I can't mistaken this for lust or something superficial. I still know so little about this blonde, regardless the three years we've been in the same class.

When it comes to a pretty face, it's as though my reasonings get shot. The flustered bunny girl responds to my pampering by laying her head on my lap as she closes her eyes. Maybe to hide her embarrassment, yet her ears are completely red. I rub her shoulders next, warming her up even more. That's my excuse anyway. Maybe I just enjoy patting her down. She's like my very own pet rabbit. She's cute when she's not badgering and teasing me. Wonder why Miura's being less chatty. Maybe she'd exhausted her wit for the time being, or maybe she's enjoying this moment as much as I am. WHAT AM I SAYING, HACHIMAN?! I instantly stop the unintentional flirting and look down at Miura as her long eyelashes part, exposing those olive-green eyes. She looks up at me with a face of concern; as though saying, "why'd you stop?" She then takes my hand and lays it on her belly only after giving it a light peck on her lips. She's surprisingly squishy and a bit plump. It maybe due to the tight outfit she's wearing. It does make her breast and rear end appear more mature. That being said, she's definitely confident in her own skin. I stare at her supple pink lips as strands of her golden hair wrap around her face. She lets out a slight moan, from my fingers pressing against her belly. This isn't good. My face is starting to get more flushed by the second. I could get addicted to this...

It was just a few days ago when we were at odds with one another, so why is her hypnotic beauty so tantalizing? Was she never this cute with anyone else? Before I knew it, the couple that was once examining a script turn to our direction with a cheeky grin.

Hina: "I knew you two had something goin on! What did I tell you Comrade Zai!"

Zaimokuza sticks his thumb out at me with approval, as he responds to Ebina.

Zaimokuza: "You seem to be on the dot my sister! HAHAHA!"

Hina: "NEVER REFER TO ME AS 'MY SISTER!'"

Zaimokuza: "Right! Sorry Ma'am!"

Hina: "Alright you two love birds! Sorry for the wait. Took longer than expected, but we're ready for you!"

Miura swiftly sits back up but not without first making contact to my chin from her head. The harsh pain stings as I scream in agony while the clumsy bunny girl rubs her head exuberantly.

Yumiko: "Damn it Hikio! Watch it would'ja!"

Hachiman: "You're the one who just suddenly sprung up and hit me!"

Yumiko: "Also, don't think for a second that I'm gonna forgive you for feeling me up like that!"

Her cheeks go red as she tries to assert her dominance once more as her irritating voice returns.

Hachiman: "You took my hand and placed it on your stomach! What was I supposed to do with that information?! Anyone would have thought that was an invitation! You tease!"

Yumiko: "You heard it didn't you!"

Hachiman: "What are you talking about?"

I knew exactly what she was talking about.

Yumiko: "Don't play dumb! I know you heard me moa…"

She swiftly grew silent and refrained from speaking, only becoming more embarrassed in front of Ebina.

Hina: "HueHueHue! What exactly happened here?! I want details you two!"

Yumiko: "Shut up Hina! It's none of your concerns! So like, drop it!"

Hina: "You two really are surprisingly ideal for each other. Who woulda thunk it? Anyways, I'll just pry it out of you later, girlfriend. For now, let's get to modeling! Hachiman, come here so I can take your me-me-measurements!"

Telling by the way her pervy hands are twitching, something tells me she's gonna have too much fun with this. But before she could touch me, Miura smacks her friend over the head with a rolled up Action Jump magazine. Poor Ebina didn't stand a chance as she fell to the ground with an enormous lump protruding from her noggin.

Yumiko: "Zaimokuza! You're doing Hikio's measurements!"

Zaimokuza: "YES MA'AM! PLEASE DON'T HIT ME MA'AM!"

Hina: "Protective today, aren't we, Yumiko-chan. uwu*"

Yumiko: "Hina, go die in a fire! Pervert! You're all a bunch of perverts!"

Speak for yourself, bunny girl...

After the weekend, Miura went back to her usual… err… new ritual of meeting with me during lunch hour again. I don't fuss over it and just accepted it at this point. She stares sensitively at me while I eat my food. She's just goggling at this point… it's uncomfortable to say the least. What exactly is she observing? The bell then chimes for lunch hour to end as she makes her way back to her desk. Weirdo! The hell is up with that? It's been five days since that moment we shared on the couch. She needs to let it go. If she's not talking, she's gawking. And while she flatters me with attention, everyone in her clique and the majority of the class are now aware of the Fire Queen's actions.

End.
