OUT OF CHARACTER:

I'm fully accepting that this fanfiction isn't going to please everyone. So I'm stating this now, this is OOC. Again, I try not to diverge too much from the characters' profiles, but if it bothers you, I truly apologize. Hopefully, that doesn't take away from the story I want to tell.

SYNOPSIS: The long-awaited fluff you've all been asking for. Part 1! Basically, they make it to Grandmother's house and a whole bunch of shenanigans happen. This covers the beginning part of Yumiko and Hachiman's week-long vacation together. Honestly, it was very off-putting to write at times, but it was tons of fun regardless. WARNING* Expect foul play.

To those who've followed me from the earlier chapters, you're all rockstars in my book and I can't even begin to thank you. It's like 'Thank You,' doesn't even convey my full gratitude. But, Thank You all the same. Alright, I think I held you up long enough. Please enjoy this latest chapter.

Chapter 11 - Yumiko x Hikio: One Dumb Phone Call

Who knew two trains and a bus ride would take you across the entire world. I'm seriously not built for traveling long distances. Let's not forget being completely out of my natural element. The only person I have to rely on is the giddy blonde that sits next to me. She's bouncing sporadically in her seat. This could be a sign that we're finally approaching our destination. This is a good thing since that egg sandwich I ate, isn't sitting that well with me. At least when I went on that field trip last year, the entire class was there. And here I thought that was them preparing us for the real world. Yet, no amount of training relieves these nerves of mine. How much have I really grown? Miles away from home, no one I'm familiar with, and to think I like being alone. Feeling stranded is a whole other story. Our bus finally makes a stop at the Awaji Island Bus Station.

We're supposed to get picked up by her aunt. Guess that means the rest of the way is by car. Hmm, it's been about twenty minutes, and she's running late. I look both ways of the street to see any cars go by. This town is very rural indeed; laid back and quiet. Too quiet. Miura is on the phone with her aunt, apparently, she should be pulling up in a matter of minutes. Not a moment too soon, a small white two-door mini coupe speeds down the vacant road as it comes to a rather abrasive yet quick halt. Am I really gonna entrust my life to this crazy driver?! Here I thought Ms. Hiratsuka was bad! Regardless, we hop in and take off to Miura's grandmother's house. Still trying to figure out how she's going to be, and what she'll think of me with her granddaughter? My own mother already has her suspicions, so her reactions might be going through the roof?

Aunt Miura: "Hey you two! Sorry for the rushed introductions. Mom had me run some errands before picking you up."

Right, I guess to her, Miura's grandmother is her mother.

Aunt Miura: "So how was the trip for the both of you? I bet it was exciting. Then again, it's probably normal for a young couple like yourselves to spend so much time together. Am I right Hahaha… sorry, Yumi-chan mentioned you were coming but I forgot your name."

Hachiman: "It's Hikigaya Ma'am. And we're not a…"

Aunt Miura: "…Oh that's right Hikio!"

Erg* Looking over at the blonde, she was quick to avoid my eyes. At least if you're gonna talk about me with your family, use my real name damn it!

Aunt Miura: "Oh and by the way Hikio, you can just call me Auntie. 'Ma'am' doesn't suit me. Seventy-five to eighty percent, I won't reply to it. Kinda depends if I like you or not. But better just stay on my good side. Ya feel me?"

Hachiman: "R-R-Right. I'll remember that from now on… Auntie."

Aunt Miura: "That's more like it! So anyway, tell me about your trip! We've got time to spare!"

Miura's having a blast as she remains silent, she's holding back her smile. She's nothing like her niece, that's for sure. She's more laid back in a quirky way. Very straightforward too. Manageable, but I get the feeling that if I have too much of Auntie's presence, she'd wear me out in no time.

After a crazy twenty-minute drive with Miura's aunt, my stomach starts to disagree with the egg sandwich. Not again! Hold it in Hachiman! Here I thought the bus ride was bad. I will never forsake another bus driver ever again. I step out of the vehicle to witness our home for the next few days. "We stand in front of a fairly large property with an even larger classic Japanese-style home!" That's what I'd like to say, at least. Instead, the large classic Japanese-style home is replaced by a much smaller two-story home. Looks fairly average. The exterior is wood paneling. Nothing impressive. It's maybe no bigger than my home. Are we really spending the whole week here? With her grandmother and aunt? My expectations were on a pedestal and yet this was rather subversive. To think of a well-established family like the Miura's with their lavish lifestyle and public image, there are those who don't care for all the glamour. Well, there goes the Edo-style vacation I imagined. I was really looking forward to trying out some samurai outfits.

I look at Miura, again she turns her face away from mine. She did mention that there would be a surprise. Well, color me surprised. I can kinda tell she's embarrassed to introduce me to her grandmother who's much more of a commoner than herself. Why else would she be embarrassed to look at me? Sure I didn't expect this, but maybe it could still be relaxing. I gotta remain positive. Miura's aunt grabs our bags while I engage in helping her out. Thinking about it, this is probably the first time I've been around Miura when she's being distant from me. She acted normal during the first half of the trip, but soon as we got here, she became more and more silent. An elderly woman comes out to greet us. She's a bit heavier set than her daughter and granddaughter, but still most welcoming. The senior lady told us to come inside to get comfortable.

Miura's aunt goes out of her way to place our belongings in our designated rooms as the old lady sat us down around the floor in what seemed to be the dining area. It's very traditional for a home that's not so… traditional. So I guess we have our meals kneeling on the floor? It's not that kneeling while eating isn't cool, but I'd rather have the comfort of a table and chair. This is where her grandmother's age really shows. Speaking of, she grabs my face and twists my neck as she holds a monocle over her eye.

Grandma Miura: "So this is the boy you were speaking about, granddaughter? Well, speak up!"

Yumiko: "Y-y-yes grandmother! This is Hachiman Hikigaya. But I call him Hikio for short."

Grandma Miura: "Hikio huh?"

Why does it feel that I'm being evaluated? Isn't she supposed to be subtle about her observations of other people? So why does it feel like it's some sort of test I have to pass? Can she let go of my delicate face already?! Her nails are starting to dig in deep! The last thing I need on my ugly mug is a scar. It won't even be an intimidating scar. However, I am kinda surprised that Miura would talk to her elders and aunt about me. I pull my face away from the old hag's hands. Jeez! That was really starting to hurt.

Yumiko: "Hikio!"

Hachiman: "What?"

Grandma Miura: "He's got the eyes of a wolf. I sense real strength and stubbornness in this one."

Yumiko: "A wolf, huh? Ehehehe…he…"

Don't snicker in front of me! All you and your friends ever referred my eyes to were freaky fish eyes. Her grandmother, on the other hand, is vastly gaining brownie points with me. Addressing my fierce eyes like a wolf's, what's cooler than a wolf! Dare I say badass sounding too?! The old hag gets it! Yes! I like you old lady!

Grandma Miura: "I like this one granddaughter! It's a shame my son, wasn't able to come with you. Tell that good-for-nothing father of yours that it's been years now. How dare he skip out on seeing his dear old mother."

Yumiko: "I'm sorry about that grandmother. I'll be sure to address your concerns with father."

Woah, I didn't think Miura could sound so much like Yukinoshita. She's talking so properly in front of her elder. Does this old lady really intimidate her? I mean, she seems pretty straightforward as grandmas go. I'd be pissed too if my kids never came to visit me… then again, it's not like father is ever really home. It's like I'm slowly forgetting what he actually looks like.

Grandma Miura: "As for you, Hikio…"

Hikio?! No! Not you too grandma! I was just beginning to like you! Ugh, I guess I can't escape the Hikio fate with the Miura family.

Grandma Miura: "I know you'll take good care of my granddaughter, yeah?"

Ummm… what? EXCUSE ME?! WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?! WHAT DID SHE MEAN BY SAYING THAT?! Miura's been so quiet lately. Does it have to do with this?! I look over at the girl who's supposed to be my support throughout this entire trip as she starts to blush. Again she avoids eye contact with me. Don't tell me she… I look at the old biddy as she continues to speak. Miura, what did you do?!

Grandma Miura: "This is the part where you bow down and accept my blessings, boy."

In an instant, I felt certain intimidation from this pint-size senior. Running is out of the question in this situation. I'm trapped! This is starting to feel as though I've fallen into one of Miura's diabolical schemes again. This lady is just like her granddaughter with those anaconda eyes! If Miura is the Fire Queen, her Grandmother would be Hades herself! Against my own will, I bow down and accept her skin-crawling words with MUCH hesitation.

Hachiman: "Y-Y-Yes, I will take good care of your granddaughter, Miura."

Grandma Miura: "Miura? Are you two not intimate? Why do you address her so formally? I had the impression that you two were…?"

Yumiko: "AAAHHH… he does grandmother. You just kinda got him a little nervous."

Miura lifts my head and straightens my torso back up, then gives me two big slaps on the back as she proceeds to fix up my collar. She's nervous right now too. And with good reason… FORGET THAT! WHAT REASON DO YOU HAVE TO TELL SUCH RUMORS TO YOUR GRANDMOTHER?!

Yumiko: "Wow! I haven't heard you call me that in such a long time, babe. Hehehe…"

"Babe?!" When the hell did she start calling me "Babe?!" The aunt finally comes in to break the ice,

Aunt Miura: "All right lovebirds, you're officially settled! You're up on the second floor. Hopefully, you enjoy the guest room. I went through all that trouble to set it all up for the both of you."

Great! We both stand up in unison as we make our way out of her grandmother's site. We scurry up the stairs that seem to go on forever. Maybe it's the trauma that Miura's grandmother ingrained in me. We finally make it to the top of the stairs but aside from the one door that opens to our room, there's not much else. We open the door as I take in the too-cozy-for-its-own-good room.

Aunt Miura: "Look at that!"

Hachiman: "Ahh! Where'd you…"

Aunt Miura: "A window with a view of the town. If you look farther, you can see the ocean. Isn't this just the best! Getting away from that busy city life. Yep, this is the perfect space for a loving couple. You even have your very own bathroom. Alright! Well, dinner will be served in a bit. So I'll let you lovebirds 'have at it'. If you know what I mean. Yumi-chan, you're still in high school, be responsible when you… you know. Do the deed."

FINALLY, SHE LEAVES! I was right about her, I wouldn't get too exhausted around her. Slamming the door shut behind me, I turn around with anger in my eyes. Miura's posture appears shrunken and timid in front of an open window sill. The sunlight outside is giving her such an angelic glow… which is not necessary right now! What I do need, are answers! What kinda getaway trip did I sign up for?! Why are we sharing one room?! I walk towards the timid-looking girl.

Hachiman: "So what am I. Your quasi-boyfriend or something?"

Yumiko: "...Ummm... Think higher…"

Higher? What comes after boyfriend… oh shit… YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?!

Hachiman: "YOU'VEGOTTABEKIDDINGME?!"

The old biddy shouts from the bottom of the stairs.

Grandma Miura: "Is everything going well up there?"

Yumiko: "Yes, grandmother! It was just a spider! Hikio squished it!"

Grandma Miura: "What have I told you before about killing spiders?! They're good for the ecosystem!"

WHY THE HELL ARE WE TALKING ABOUT INSECTS AND BUGS?!

Hachiman: "You know, you've got a real problem. I thought we promised to be open with each other."

Yumiko: "Surprise… hehehe… sigh* fine. Just let me explain."

I try to intimidate this filthy liar standing before me by walking even closer to her. I'm going to make her vacation a living hell from here on out! She backs up with a hint of fear and uncertainty in her eyes.

Hachiman: "What?! Did it just happen to slip out or something? Is that why you've been playing me all this time? Because grandma wants to know how her granddaughter is doing with the boys back at home? So your last ditched effort with Hayam failed, making me your next victim?"

Yumiko: "No… it's not like that at all! You've got it all wrong."

I slam my hand on the wall behind her. Yumiko blushes, trying to keep her intimidating gaze on me but she knows better than to piss me off when I get like this.

Hachiman: "See this is why Komachi was so against me going on this trip. Now I gotta spend the whole week here with you."

Yumiko: "If it makes you feel better, we're only here for three nights before we head out to Osaka to meet up with my cousin. That's our next stop."

Hachiman: "OSAKA?!"

The petite girl tries to physically fight back as she tries to force me off her space. This is exactly how I feel when I get trapped in a corner! No way I'm letting up!

Yumiko: "Sheesh! Do your ears even work?! Did I not make myself clear! Stupid boy!"

Hachiman: "Don't call me stupid! We're not friends, nor are we lovers. So how are you going to talk your way around me being your fiance?! I'm straightening things out with that old lady this instant. Maybe she'll let me sleep on the couch downstairs or in her car."

Turning around, I pace towards the bedroom door but before I could reach the handle, Miura blocks my exit as she forces me to take a step back.

Hachiman: "Move!"

Yumiko: "NO! I won't let you ruin this for her!"

Hachiman: "Like I even care enough!"

We tussle over the door until Miura manages to trip over my legs, pushing me down on the wooden floor. She's on top of me. What a convenient accident. Now she's got the advantage. Not like before. Thanks for the wrong timing, Rom-Com Gods! The stubborn girl looks me straight in the eyes with more certainty than a moment ago. Her timid personality changed. Great! This is where she gets disgustingly cocky.

Yumiko: "You're not leaving this room until we can agree on something."

Hachiman: "Again, I'm being forced against my will. You're so much like that old biddy."

Yumiko: "Show her some respect!"

Hachiman: "What else have you lied about?"

Her face gets closer to mine. Her confidence is alluring. Did I mention she won't get off of me? Yeah, I try to break free, but she won't budge. Damn her athletic side!

Yumiko: "You're hurting my feelings Hikio. I told you there would be some surprises on this trip. You seriously need to build that stamina if you wanna go against me."

Now I'm the one turning away from her gaze. What the hell! Stop your blushing Hachiman! Show this crazy bitch that you won't let her walk all over you!

Hachiman: "I told you I wouldn't guarantee that I'd like the surprise."

Yumiko: "Oh? So you don't want to be my fiance? Am I not good enough for you? Am I below your standards? …Babe?"

She hugs my face with her open palms. Shit. This isn't good.

Hachiman: "…Stop calling me that… And get off already!"

Yumiko: "You knew what you signed up for. You just don't wanna admit it. And don't play dumb. If you really had a problem with me calling you 'Babe' you woulda asked me to stop a long time ago."

Hachiman: "Erg* The hell are you even talking about?"

Yumiko: "Who's the liar now? You pinned me against the wall a moment ago. Where'd all that vigor gone? Still, it was very much uncalled for. Smirk* Besides, I kinda don't want to. I enjoy seeing you beneath me."

Miura and her sick authoritarian complex. We're both still in high school. Not even graduated yet but she's acting provocatively with me. Her face is flushed red and her eyes are dilated. Will I be dealing with this side of her throughout this entire trip? I really hate being put in my place. I get too much of that from everyone else. It's not like I seek out pain, maybe I just have an affinity to it. Regardless, she's the one here. And she does have a point. I signed up for this without thinking twice about it. I change my tone to a calmer one in hopes it will give her a different reaction.

Hachiman: "...I hate that we're lying to your grandmother and aunt."

Yumiko: "There is one way to fix that."

Hachiman: "Tell them the truth."

Yumiko: "Stupid boy. Just don't be a liar… I… wouldn't mind spending the rest of my life getting to know…"

I manage to free one of my hands to cover her mouth. I can't. What would all that time, looking for genuine feelings, mean if I decide to throw it away for someone who I can't even tell when they're deceiving me. Sure there are cultures that exist where they make it work, but I wasn't taught nor raised that way. Miura is love-struck. Can't say the feeling is mutual; that said, my lustful eyes are eager as ever. I need to get her off before something else decides to wake up. She's still in that sundress and her sleeve is coming undone; exposing a bit of her shoulder. Finally getting the other hand free, I take her by the waist. She blushes. I then pinch her belly flab as she boasts in laughter. Not good, she's moving too much. I shove her off quickly.

Yumiko: "Hey! What the hell! Don't ruin this for me!"

Hachiman: "Tsk* Who could love such a cold snake."

Yumiko: "Jerk! You're no Hayato. That's for sure. You lack any kind of respect for anyone and stamina too."

Hachiman: "Not true. And please, I'd rather you don't bring his name up."

Yumiko: "You jealous? You are, aren't you!"

Hachiman: "What are you even talking about. Last I checked, I'm here playing your fiance and he's not. So are you gonna explain yourself?"

Yumiko: "I was going to, but you decided to come up with that absurd story!"

Hachiman: "Well can you blame me?"

Yumiko: "I guess not. I did deceive you. So… sorry… Hikio."

More blushing from the Fire Queen.

Yumiko: "The truth is; the night I called grandmother, telling her I'd be bringing a boy with me, she was quick to come to conclusions… Like someone else I know… That's when I learned something about our family history... How was I supposed to know that for the last four generations, the Miura family had all found their soulmates during their time in high school?! When it comes to my love life around my family, I wanted to keep it private. I never even told her about Hayato. So when she was ecstatic about me opening up to her about a boy I liked. You were the first boy I ever mentioned to her. Afterward… well, I'm pretty sure you can put two and two together. So you see, it has nothing to do with whatever outlandish scenario you came up with. I don't even know how you'd come up with something so diabolical. I can't even fathom planning things out that far back! Is that how you really see me?"

So this whole thing was all because of some stupid family myth?! Now that I think about it, most of Miura's plays have been sporadic. Maybe she really is incapable of planning that far out in advance. Even in that fight at the school, she did mention that she took advantage of a situation that was presented to her. Also when she was crying her eyes out that day I came to visit her at her home, it must have really opened her eyes to understanding everything that led up to her present self. What she's telling me now, does sound more like what the Fire Queen would do. I gave her too much credit. Still, she coulda better prepared me… then again, I probably wouldn't have come on this trip with her if I had known. Sigh* I was wrong. But what about that moment…?

Hachiman: "How about with what you said before when we boarded the train?"

Yumiko: "Well, I do intend to make you mine before the end of this trip. Figured I'd use this fiance thing to really show off what I've got and win you over!"

My light giggling turns to loud laughter in a matter of seconds after hearing what this ditsy girl just proclaimed.

Yumiko: "Hey! Stop laughing at me! I really am trying here! I know we don't know too much about each other yet, but I got a serious lead with no one from our hometown being here."

Hachiman: "Sorry, it's just that… when did my love life become everyone's interest?! I'm not that type of protagonist. So having Yukinoshita and Yuigahama act all weird around me, I get it now. Is that why you and Yuigahama aren't talking like friends?!"

Yumiko: "So, remember how you asked me not to mention Hayato? Don't ever talk about those two in front of me, or I'll castrate you in your sleep."

If this were an erogame, I think I might have chosen the forbidden path. Forget the Tsundere route, I think we got ourselves, dare I say, going down the Yandere route. Aren't Yandere's supposed to be calm and peace-loving before they go mental though? Actually, this is more like a Mayadere or Kamidere situation. Miura definitely acts the villain role and is pretty arrogant. My life is now in danger.

Yumiko: "Earth to Hikio! Hello?! You there?"

Hachiman: "Right. Sorry. I was lost in thought."

Yumiko: "You tend to do that a lot. Whatever it is, stop overthinking. It's bad for your health."

Hachiman: "By the way, I'm not sharing a futon with you. You take that side of the room and I'll take this side."

Yumiko: "Why do you call the shots!? Are we not even going to talk about this?"

Hachiman: "What is there to talk about? You said not to overthink. Besides, if I left it up to you, I'm pretty sure the outcome would be…"

Yumiko: "Chicken. Make a move on me already. Sheesh."

Hachiman: "We're still in high school. And it's not like you have any experience yourself."

Yumiko: "HIKIO! That's so rude to say in front of a girl!"

Hachiman: "I could be wrong. Maybe you do have experience in…"

Yumiko: "…I-I-I don't! Happy now?! Oh Gawd! Help me! This is so embarrassing! I'm in my last year of high school and I'm still a v-v-v-virgin!"

Hachiman: "Hey! Shut up! If you think you can seduce me with your venomous words, it's not going to work!"

Yumiko: "Whatevs. You'll die a wizard before I have anything to say about it."

Hachiman: "Witch!"

Miura flops over onto a pillow as she hides her face from mine. She's all talk and really has no clue how to go about this relationship thing either. Here I thought for a second she had some sort of experience. I had to be sure, but now I know I can sleep soundly at night; without worrying about her doing something so scandalous. Yet one can never be too careful. Which is why I plan on passing out after she does! That's right, one step at a time, Hachiman! You got this. Don't fall in love! Keep her in check.

Yumiko: "Oh no!"

Hachiman: "What is it now?!"

Yumiko: "I forgot that I gotta work. So if you don't mind, step out of the room for a few minutes."

Hachiman: "What the hell?! Now you want me out?!"

Yumiko: "Sorry Hikio, but it'll only be for like ten minutes, thirty minutes tops!"

Miura shoves me out of the small room, as I ponder what she means by work. Obviously, this sprung some curiosity in me, so I took the liberty of peeking in on my "fiancee". She sets up her laptop and then goes over to a closet adjacent to where I'm stealing a glance. Miura takes a moment to dig for something large, but at this angle, her sun dress is rising higher… I shouldn't look… but nothing is really showing… Yet this feeling of blood rushing to my cheeks doesn't stop. She was on top of me just a moment ago. I felt her... The mind is a powerful thing. Dare I beg the Rom-com Gods for something inappropriate to happen? No! I must not fall into that category. Yet these lust-filled eyes won't stop staring. The blonde loses her balance and flops on the wooden floor, but it seems she finally got out a good-size-looking case or box of sorts. Wonder what's in it?

The scent of dinner floods my nose with an amazing aroma. Something fried, not traditional Japanese at all. But getting back to Miura, she takes the time to pamper her face and makeup before turning on her laptop. In a matter of moments, she flips her hair and starts talking into her webcam. Is she having a conversation with someone? Who is she talking to? Is that her employer on the other end? There's SO MUCH I don't know about her. She's the rich girl. Why does she need to work? I don't work… I pride myself on being a shut-in. Both mom and dad are corporate workers, slaving away behind the desk. Providing for the family. Because of them, I'm able to live as I do.

So what's my excuse for not getting a job? Even Komachi, she'll soon figure out her calling and work somewhere where it caters to her strengths. Can't help but imagine her working at some restaurant or bakery as head cook. All I'm good for is reading and gaming... and giving my two cents. Then there's this primadonna before me. She seems to be enjoying what she's doing. Never had I ever felt so useless. I talk a big game, but what am I really doing with my life? Many high schoolers like myself work. Am I just incapable of hard labor? If I keep going down this path, then I'll be a professional neet.

Barely making out what she's saying, it sounds as though she's addressing more than one person. So it's a group conference. She brings in the old dusty-looking case and opens it. She pulls out a small guitar… what do you call those things? It only has four strings, so it can't be a guitar. Then, her voice elevates the room and I start to hear her crystal clear. She's singing some sort of love song. Who is she singing that song for? Here I thought she was infatuated with me… but does she have other love interests that I don't know about? Maybe she's an online escort. Her gyaru lifestyle fits. But it doesn't sound right.

Aunt Miura: "She's got a real voice, doesn't she."

Hachiman: "Huh?! You again?! You need to stop popping up like that."

Aunt Miura: "I've been told I have that bad habit. Sorry, kiddo. I came up here to tell you two that food's just about ready. But I didn't want to disturb her."

Hachiman: "She says she's working."

Aunt Miura: "Is that so?"

Hachiman: "She claims to be done in ten minutes, thirty tops."

Aunt Miura: "Well, the food will be cold before she finishes."

Hachiman: "Sorry, should we start without her?"

Aunt Miura: "What?! You two are the guest of honor! Why would we do that?"

Hachiman: "You guys seem so laid back, so I figured…"

Aunt Miura: "Haha! I like you! I got a better idea, why don't you go in there and tell your wife-to-be that food's getting cold."

Hachiman: "Hey wait! She said not to disturb…"

Before I could finish my sentence, the radical Auntie pushes me back into the room. Thus interrupting Miura from her job. She then snickers back down the stairs.

Hachiman: "Umm… sorry, I didn't mean to…"

Yumiko: "Hikio? Hey, perfect timing! Come here!"

Hachiman: "No I don't wanna… I mean, I was told to tell you…"

Yumiko: "Forget that!"

Miura looks back at the camera and speaks.

Yumiko: "Sorry guys for that sudden interruption. I have a special guest with me today! So like, remember when I told you last video that I'd be going on vacation to Awaji Island, I came here with a good friend!"

She seems to be acting up her best self in front of the camera. I really hope I didn't mess anything up. Soon as she was done addressing the camera, the star diva drags me into the frame with her. To my surprise, it wasn't a meeting, but a live stream of sorts. The bottom corner of her screen read MyTube. It's a popular content platform for uploading videos. I usually go on to watch reviews and speed runs for games. Personally, I'm not creative enough to upload my own content. But I guess Miura is.

Yumiko: "This is Hikio! We attend the same high school and became like, super close these last few months! We just have like so much in common!"

No, we don't.

Yumiko: "Well don't just sit there looking all aimless. Sorry guys, he's the sensitive shy type. Say hi to everyone Hikio!"

I read the live comments. There are two-hundred and forty-eight people that are watching right now. Some are already dissing me as Miura's "boy-toy" or "tool". There were also some comments that support the both of us. This is kinda overwhelming. Does she really enjoy doing this?

Hachiman: "Umm… Hello?"

Yumiko: "Isn't he just the cutest! Anyways, why'd you come in and disrupt my beautiful performance?"

Hachiman: "Auntie says the food is ready…"

Yumiko: "AHH! No way! I so love my Auntie's cooking. It's been like forever! Sorry to cut the Live Stream so short peeps. But I promise to make it extra long next week! I do have a vacation to enjoy…"

She looks at me waiting for a response.

Hachiman: "Umm… right."

Yumiko: "And to formally apologize, you can bet that our dearest friend Hikio, will be joining me in a song! But for now, talk to ya'll lates! Bye-bye!"

Miura elbows me on the side, prompting me to wave bye. But instead of waving, I stupidly give a formal Japanese bow. Damn it! I'm pretty sure I ruined her stream. She shuts off her computer and logs out.

Yumiko: "Awesomeness! I'll have to upload that to my channel later. You came in at the right time. I'm starved!"

Hachiman: "You act completely different from real life. You're more upbeat."

She doesn't seem upset. Instead, she seems like someone who just conquered the world. But how? I probably messed up her view count and subscriptions. Obviously, there were people pointing out their jealousy of me. Do I have to worry about them? Also, she addressed me as a "good friend" maybe it's just for the video. I know nothing about social media and content creation. Does she really bank off this?

Yumiko: "Hey, you coming or what?"

Hachiman: "Right… Oh, how about your mini-guitar?"

Yumiko: "Don't worry about that right now. Let's go eat! If you're good, maybe I'll play you a song on my ukulele while we're here."

No one is kneeling. Their either crossing their legs or slouching in posture. I'm the only one kneeling like some sort of Edo Period congressman. No one has individual plates either. A few large trays fall before us with some very southern-style cuisine. Hearty, bountiful, and mostly fried. I'm shocked that these people are related to Soubu High's Queen. Miura sitting across from me had changed into a comfortable yellow yukata and also tied her long hair into a messy bun. She looks so relaxed than how she normally is at school. If anyone saw this side of her, it would blow their minds.

Grandma Miura: "So, how is it, boy?"

Hachiman: "Huh? Oh! Yes! I especially love deep-fried fish. Is it horse mackerel?"

Grandma Miura: "You know your fish! Yep! The dish is called Aji Furai"

Hachiman: "Its preparation reminds me of Tonkatsu."

Grandma Miura: "Pretty much the same concept. But Awaji Island is abundant with horse mackerel, along with plenty of other sea creatures!"

Yumiko: "Hikio."

Looking at the girl that sits in front of me, she holds out her chopsticks with what seems to be an omelet of sorts. I like omelets. Everyone seems to be staring at me. I guess I have to accept her offer. I reach across the space between us and chomp down on her egg-filled chopsticks.

Hachiman: "Wow… that's really good."

Aunt Miura: "Ah! I made that, but it's my mom's specialty. It's your basic tomato and egg Stir-Fry."

Hachiman: "No way that has tomatoes! The acidity adds so much depth to the dish."

Aunt Miura: "Right?! It's so versatile that packs a punch of delicious flavors. Plus easy to cook. The trick is to add a couple of drops of Awaji Island's specially manufactured fish sauce. That's mom's secret."

Can't believe I ate a tomato dish and liked it. I want to keep going back for seconds. It's so simple.

Grandma Miura: "A commoners dish that derived from China. But it's also my granddaughter's favorite. Every time she comes to visit, Yumi-chan would always request it."

Aunt Miura: "Is that so Yumi-chan? I had no idea! I thought you told me that you hated tomatoes."

Yumiko: "It's not that I hate them. They just have to be made this good every time!"

So let me get this straight. The pride of our high school, Fire Queen Miura's favorite food is this simple commoners dish that barely involves two ingredients?! Glancing over at my blonde companion, she blushes as she faces away twirling her hair. I look over at another plate, it's a noodle dish. I take a bite. OH MY GOD! Komachi would have a field day with this dinner! If I could bring her back this meal, I would! This noodle dish has something infused with it. Something of the sea.

Grandma Miura: "It's a marinated cod roe, called Mentaiko. That's what you're tasting with the Spaghetti. Shiso leaves on top for extra fragrance."

Hachiman: "How'd you know what…"

Grandma Miura: "It's written all over your face, my boy. And believe me, I'm flattered. Try it with some soy sauce and bonito flakes. It'll only enhance its flavors."

Instantaneously, I take her advice without shame! Miura's eyes are sneaking my way again as she gives a slight giggle. Whatever! I'm enjoying this feast! I don't think I'd ever had cooking like this! And to think I would hate tomatoes forever!

Hachiman: "You're right! Wow! It's like a completely different dish now! It's not overly fishy tasting but it still tastes like the sea!"

Granma Miura: "I don't know where you found this one, granddaughter, but he sure has a good tongue! Haha! Eat it all up! There's more where this came from!"

Aunt Miura: "Yes! You must be so hungry from the trip with only sandwiches and rice balls in your bellies."

Grabbing more Mentaiko Noodles and soy sauce, I hold my chopsticks in front of Miura to taste. Why am I being taken aback by this scene? It's as though engaging with these people and Miura, is reminiscent of having family over for dinner.

Hachiman: "You have to try this!"

Thinking about it, she most likely grew up with these flavors already. But to me, it's all so new that I couldn't help but be sure that she's aware of its glorious flavors! She holds her side curls away from her face as she softly takes a bite from my chopstick. As she chews the pasta dish softly, like a princess. It's at this instant that my very being left my physical body. It's hard to describe but it's as though I'm looking at my life from a third person's perspective; a fourth dimension or higher is the best way I can sum it up. Even though we're living in the moment, my soul points out a possible future with the girl that sits directly across from me. Her soft lips, chewing on food I fed her, as she smiles in contentment with her surrounding. The entire scenario takes a pause for me to observe. Is this what they call an out-of-body experience? Where someone is able to see a destined future of happiness from only an arm's length away? If I want it, all I'd have to do is hold on to it.

Hachiman: "How is it… Yumiko?"

Her eyes sparkle as they widen with merriment. Her lips reach the corners of her face as she gleefully smiles at me. I swear tears are forming around her almond-shaped eyes. Maybe I do want whatever this is. It's as though, the closer I get to understand her, the closer it is to me finding that genuine feeling I've been craving. So, I hold on to this memory.

Yumiko: "It's delicious."

Aunt Miura: "Umm… what did she just eat? She looks like she's in heaven. I want what she's having! Here! Feed me too Hikio!"

Grandma Miura: "Hahaha! This calls for sake!"

Sake?! I'm still underage! Forget that my eighteenth birthday is coming up, I'd still have two years before I can legally drink!

Grandma Miura: "I can see that look in your eyes, boy! Forget that you have three lovely ladies before you, are you really going to deny a drink with your future grandmother?"

Hachiman: "I'm sorry ma'am but…"

Grandma Miura: "That's Ms. Ma'am to you, boy!"

Yumiko: "I don't think you should deny her, Hikio."

Hachiman: "…but… we really shouldn't"

Yumiko: "Relax, I can hold my liquor. It isn't my first time."

Hachiman: "Really? How often do you drink?!"

Yumiko: "Well… the last time I was here, I was in the seventh grade? I think? Five years ago!"

Hachiman: "That's not reassuring at all. Whatever, I was told I can't get drunk anyway. Maybe one sip will be fine."

Yumiko: "Right! For me too. After one sip, then we're in the clear!"

Hachiman: "Alright… Grandma! Bring out the booze!"

Grandma Miura: "My boy! That's what I'm talking about!"

What the hell did I get myself into!

Yumiko crawls in my general direction. Her Yukata is starting to come undone the more she draws near. Her piercing animalistic eyes are tantalizing by appearance, but that can't fool me with how dangerous she can really be when left to her own devices. Grandma and Auntie are passed out. Guess I really can't get drunk; although, I am rather tipsy. One drink turned into two, two turned into four, and four turned into eight. Even managed to outdrink the old biddy, as for her aunt, she must have called it quits after the fifth sip. "Yumiko held her own," is what I'd love to say, but she was gone after one drink. Yeah, all that talk about holding her liquor, another myth! She overestimated herself and that's what led to this very situation.

Trapped in a corner with nowhere to go. She's about three drinks in, pathetic; even after my third drink, I was fine. Hopefully, this isn't a sign to become an alcoholic. Honestly, the flavor isn't that good. But the buzz, as some call it, feels rather pleasant. All that fried food and carbs, to think it'd soak up the liquor. I still have much to learn about alcohol. Why aren't I doing anything to stop this gorgeous blonde from pouncing on top of me again? Maybe I welcome it this time around. Gotta get my act together, or I lose to her… to myself! Komachi! Your brother is a good-for-nothing alcoholic that's being taken away by a hot blonde gyaru in a kimono… or was it a yukata… what? Maybe I am drunk. That Haruno! She said it was impossible for me to get drunk! What's going on right now? Is Haruno here? How about Yukinoshita? No…

Hachiman: "Hey, you're heavy. Get off will you!"

Right, Yumiko managed to pin me down like a hungry lioness. I'm guessing she didn't have enough to eat. The hell am I trying to make sense of any of this? Her face is flushed red as she breathes profusely while the late-night summer heat exudes steam with her exhales. Her face starts to get even closer to mine, but what can I do? I can't win with her. Doesn't even matter if she's drunk or not, she's going to find a way to be on top.

Yumiko: "You know… Hic*… it's rude to call a lady fat. You're so rude to me. You should just learn to behave like a good dog. Hic*"

Hachiman: "Well maybe if you stopped being so aggressive all the time and give me some space to breathe once in a while. Treat a dog poorly, and he'll bite back!"

Yumiko: "Teehee… I can bite too ya know. Hic*"

Hachiman: "Shut up. You're drunk."

Yumiko: "Take that back! Am not!"

Hachiman: "Are too!"

Yumiko: "Don't make me fight you, Hikitani! Hic*"

Hachiman: "Quit calling me that! It's not my name! I always hate it when your friends called me that!"

Yumiko: "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Baby. I'm so sorry."

Hachiman: "No you're not."

Yumiko: "No I really am."

Hachiman: "Promise?"

Yumiko: "Yes baby. I'm sorry…"

Honestly, I don't even know what we're rambling on about. My speech… I have no control over it. Words are slurring left and right. Then I feel a sharp pain in my neck. What the hell is this crazy girl doing?! I get that she's a snake, but did she really have to go and bite me?! With a chunk of my neck flesh still in her mouth, she musters up to say something.

Yumiko: "…Told'ja I bite…"

I try to squirm my way from her grasp, this isn't fun at all. But she won't let up! What the hell was in that sake?! Some sort of strength-enhancing serum?!

Yumiko: "I know your little secret Hikio… you like this kinda stuff, don't you. Pervert! You love it when you feel pain, don't you? See that's why we're so compatible. I can give you that since I love delivering it."

Hachiman: "Get off me before I get rabies or something! You wicked venomous snake-woman!"

Yumiko: "Bad boy. You're so rude. Stop being so rude to me. Don't make me punish you."

Hachiman: "You're a real sick bitch! This isn't fun at all!"

Yumiko: "Liar. I can tell."

After what seemed like an eternity, I resorted to tickling her in the only spot that I know worked last time; her belly. She starts to laugh loudly that you could swear the entire town woke up from their deep sleep. She's so obnoxious and abrasive when she's on the juice. Thousand times worse when she's not. Finally breaking away from her clutches, the entire incident knocked me back to my senses. As for my feisty friend, knocked out cold. That laugh took the last breath outta her. Good thing too.

The ladies lie on the floor as I clean up after everyone: cleared the remaining food, did the dishes, scrubbed my neck… that mark isn't going away anytime soon, and then brought everyone blankets and pillows. Honestly, I should just let my fiancee sleep out here with the rest of her crazy family while I have a good night's sleep in the room upstairs, but something in me said to bring her upstairs. Not because it was the right thing to do or that her grandmother and aunt would get pissy with me in the morning, but because… it's something I wanted to do. Is this what you call cherishing something? I hate this girl so much, so why do I keep growing fonder of her?

It's like I've known these people all my life. I feel… normal. When I'm around you… Yumiko, I feel normal. Is it really that easy? I think back to my American friend Allen, and what he told me about finding my own shape of happiness. Carefully lifting up the highly exposed gal, I carry her up the flight of steps. All I can do is smile. You're such a troublemaker. Why are you like this? To think I almost helped her fall in love with someone else. Now I can't imagine her ever settling for any one person. She was obsessed, for so long too. Now I just wanna see her happy. Or I could still be a little bit tipsy. I remember grabbing your hand before you were about to storm out after everyone seemed to neglect your request. You were crying, and I wondered why I did so. It's because I wanted to help.

Yumiko: "Mmm… where are we going? Hikio?"

Is she talking in her sleep?

Hachiman: "I'm taking you to bed."

Yumiko: "With you?"

Hachiman: "You wish."

Yumiko: "Heehee…zzz…"

Hachiman: "I hate you so much."

Can't stop smiling.

Hours later with the moon as our source of night light, I hear a voice that should be sound asleep.

Yumiko: "Hikio… hey, Hikio… are you awake?"

Hachiman: "…"

Yumiko: "Hey, if you can hear me… I'm sorry… I probably did something to upset you. But I wanted to also say sorry for… making you come out with me. It's just that, once you said yes, I was so happy. To the point that if you had any second thoughts, I would have denied them. Also, sorry for always having to rely on you to take care of me. You probably get furious when I become ditsy and lazy. But not just tonight, but ever since you took me on as a client for my request. Talking to me when I didn't care to hear your opinion, showing up out of the blue to hand me my school assignments, standing up for me against your sister. They may seem small moments for you, something you might even brush over, but to me, I remember every one of them. Also, I didn't mean to call you Hikitani, I messed up and I feel really awful about it. For some reason, I remember that when I was still drunk off my mind. And after you finally called me by my first name. You haven't called me Yumiko since you decided to help me with my request. So… it made me really happy, but I don't think I deserve to feel this way for always being such a bother to you. You were right, we shouldn't have drank sake with grandmother and auntie. I don't know if you're asleep or just faking, but… I really have grown strong feelings for you. I wear my heart on my sleeves, and I'm pretty obvious to read, but I guess I should say this now. Will you go out with me? ...Obviously, you don't have to answer now. But I also don't want to wait forever."

Yumiko's straight confession has me on edge. I'm sleeping on a single futon on a wooden floor. So explain how I can feel on edge as if I'm about to fall off a cliff? How can anyone sleep after what she just said?! Sure I was buzzed, but I wasn't drunk and I'm great with memory. She was literally on me like an anaconda trying to strangle her meal. I have the bite mark on my neck to prove it! But I'd be lying if I said that her scent wasn't so inviting, maybe it was the effects of the sake. I feel Yumiko's warm body get closer to mine as I keep my eyes shut. My heart races… please, not again. I don't know what else to do if she decides to attack me again.

A warm kiss on my forehead, her nautical smell, the strands of hair brushing against my face… this feels like… mom. She used to kiss my forehead after tucking me and my sister into bed. Why am I remembering something from when I was eight? Maybe it's because it was one of the last real emotions I had with my mother? Something I had forgotten? Yumiko's alluring scent fades away drastically. Cracking an eye open, she returned to her side of the room. As promised, Yumiko left me alone. It hadn't even been one day with her, but so much had already happened.

Why does it feel as though we slept through our entire morning? Oh, that's right, we did! It's about 11:45 and this heat is scorching! Forget the fact that the A/C isn't really working on the second floor, our rotating floor fan isn't helping either. Yesterday was utter chaos, and I never wanna experience alcohol ever again. My head is still slightly spinning. Guess I drank more than I thought I could handle. But now I know eight is my breaking point. Anything after that, I would have been completely drunk, but why eight of all numbers?! Been standing in front of this toilet for a good three minutes now. Who knew liquor would make you wanna go so bad. Then the door slides open as a yawning Yumiko pauses before entering… WHAT THE HELL?!

Hachiman: "EVER HEAR OF KNOCKING?!"

In utter shock, she shrieks as she covers her eyes.

Yumiko: "I am like, so sorry! I didn't know you were in here! I was like, wondering where you have gone to."

Hachiman: "Great! You found me! Can you like leave, now?!"

Yumiko: "Umm… sure! Right, here I go… bye!"

Yumiko quickly slams the door shut, but I'm pretty sure she was stealing peeks. Her face went completely red as though the heat in this place isn't bad enough. That was so embarrassing! How do I face her now?! It's one thing after another with her! I knew staying in one room was a bad idea! After taking care of my business and washing my hands with soap, I exit the bathroom. Now I just gotta muster up the courage to look her in the face. It's her fault anyway! I glance over at the corner where the pervy blonde sits hiding half her face behind a pillow.

Yumiko: "You really should have locked the door if you were using the bathroom!"

Hachiman: "How are you turning this on me?! I was the one that got violated?! By the way princess, I'm pretty sure you knew the lock on that door wasn't working! Maybe you wanted to walk in on me!"

Yumiko: "Eww… no! I'm not like that! I just forgot is all! Gosh! Why do you have to be so harsh to me! Good morning to you too, Hikio!"

I grab the nearest pillow and launch it at her stupid flushed face for payback. Direct hit!

Hachiman: "Imma wait downstairs. The bathroom is all yours. Pervert!"

Across from me, sits a pouting Yumiko. Crap, I made eye contact!

Yumiko: "We're still going to the beach today, right?"

Hachiman: "It's so hot outside though. If we wanted to enjoy a day at the beach, we should have gone earlier."

Yumiko: "You obvi. know why we couldn't go!"

Hachiman: "Because someone had to get drunk on their first drink last night!"

Yumiko: "Arrg* Hey! It's not like you were any better!"

Hachiman: "Tsk*"

Aunt Miura: "Sounds like a splendid idea! I've got errands to run and I'm already running behind. Mom is still passed out, but I'm pretty sure she could use some peace a quiet. You kids getting out of the house would do her some good for now."

What is that supposed to mean? I hardly talk as is! It's just ever since this trip, it's been nonstop with miss High-and-mighty over here. But I don't wanna cause any unnecessary trouble, so conceding to Auntie's suggestion was the only thing I could do.

Yumiko: "YAY! I swear you haven't been to a beach like this back in Chiba!"

Hachiman: "You've been to one, you've been to all of them."

Aunt Miura: "No don't be a downer Hikio, try to have some fun. It's not every day you get to spend it out and about on Awaji Island. Take up the scenery. We've also got anime theme parks here.

Anime theme parks?!

Hachiman: "…I guess that would sound… kinda fun. If… Yumiko…"

Yumiko: "YES! Let's do it all!"

That threw me off. She's a live wire today. When did she ever like anime or manga?!

Yumiko: "In fact, lemme make the plans for today! Just leave it to me!"

Hachiman: "It's not like I have a say in anything anyways."

Moments pass by while taking the opportunity to look at some of the main attractions on the island with a brochure I found. Last night was really something else. She's getting dressed for our outing today. Took me two minutes to get ready and pack my trunks and a towel. So how is it that she's taking a lifetime to get ready? Whatever, as long as I get to visit the Superhero Academia Theme Park, I'll be good. That anime blew up so quickly, but I'm ahead in the manga, like a true otaku!

After taking her sweet ol' time, the stunning girl walks down the stairs in… less clothing than she went upstairs with! Gulp*

Yumiko: "Ready, Hikio?"

Hachiman: "Aren't we hitting the beach after the theme park? Why are you dressed like you're ready to hit the water?"

Yumiko: "Ugh* We're on Awaji Island; it's nothing like Tokyo. Enjoy the countryside a bit. Everyone is laxed here. Besides, I don't wanna keep changing. So I figured this cute bikini top and shorts should be fine. Look! I hardly have anything to carry but a towel and an inflatable ball!"

She throws her shades on with confidence and then grabs my hand.

Yumiko: "Now come on! Auntie is waiting in the car."

The entire ride, I kept to my side of the car not making eye contact. Yumiko is quiet too; wondering what's going on in her head?

Aunt Miura: "Sheesh! You two are clammier than a couple of hyenas! That's me being sarcastic by the way. I guess you two had a good night's sleep? I hope you didn't forget to wear protection Yumi-chan!"

Yumiko: "Erg* Auntie! We didn't! We're still… in high school for crying out loud!"

Aunt Miura: "That didn't stop you before, did it Hikio? I mean, she was all over you after getting that sweet nectar in her system! Come to think of it, it's similar to the time your mother and my brother... "

Yumiko: "Shut up! Shut up!"

I stay quiet. I don't know how to respond to that.

Aunt Miura: "Welp, we're here! As promised, I can drop you off, but from here on out, you two will have to take public transport to get back home."

We both exit Auntie's vehicle as she speeds off. In front of us is Superhero Academia Theme Park! My excitement can hardly be contained. Hopefully, this doesn't bore Yumiko as I geek out on their obstacle course. It's not your traditional theme park with roller coasters or anything, but it's more like a maze-like event, where we have to do something like a scavenger hunt. They do have a small Ferris Wheel and some bumper cars, but that's about it.

Yumiko: "Wait here, I'll go get the tickets."

Hachiman: "Hey, hold on, I can get them. It was my idea to come here anyway."

Yumiko: "Yeah and if you hadn't come with me on this trip, I would never have come here with you. 'Sides, I already planned the whole trip at my expense. Don't worry about paying for anything."

Hachiman: "I really don't want that feeling of owing you a favor."

Yumiko: "Then don't! Think of it as a gift from me to you. Umm… I know! An early birthday gift. When's your birthday anyway?"

Hachiman: "…"

Yumiko: "It's not like it's on the eighth of August or something as uncanny as that. Hahaha. That would be way too coincidental… Hachiman."

She takes a moment to pause and look at me. I shy away from her response.

Yumiko: "You've gotta be kidding me! IT IS?! Gasp* So adorable! And here I thought your parents named you after some legendary warrior, but it turns out they got a bit too creative! HAHAHA!"

Creative? I think they got lazy and just named me on the spot! They couldn't think up a name, so they came up with the day and month I was born in. So stupid, it's just ironically linked to a famous legend.

Hachiman: "Whatever. I guess if this is an early birthday gift, I'll accept."

Yumiko: "Good!"

We enter the facility after getting our tickets and I immediately get drawn to the environment with its life-size statues of Neku and Rokugo!

Yumiko: "Here, let's take a selfie together."

Hachiman: "That's no good, Rokugo is being cut out. Lemme get someone to take our picture!"

Ah! So cool! After a couple of pictures, we start our scavenger hunt. Looking around, I see other couples walking hand in hand. Wonder how an otaku girlfriend would be like? Zaimokuza would know since Ebina is always around him. Hmm, they're both entering their story at this year's Summer Comiket. I should stop by sometime to show them support. The con should be closer to the end of summer break. Yumiko and I continue to walk around as we lazily finish the scavenger hunt.

Yumiko: "Hikio, water. Drink some. Don't forget to hydrate yourself in this heat."

Hachiman: "Right…"

I forget she's got that caring side to her too. I wonder if she'd make a good mother... wait... That's not what I meant. Just that she can be caring at times, like a mother. I take the water bottle that Yumiko just finished drinking from. Another opportunity for an indirect kiss. She runs in front of me taking in the theme park's anime aesthetic. I'm overthinking things again. It's just a water bottle. It's not like she's gonna get pregnant from an indirect kiss. Last night we ate off each other's chopsticks, so this isn't any different. I look over at her wondering if she's having fun, it's not really in her realm, but she doesn't seem to be complaining. I take a swig of water and then join her.

Yumiko: "Where to next?"

Hachiman: "I guess the map says to go this way… hey, I wanted to ask you something."

Yumiko: "Hmm? What is it?"

Hachiman: "Do you really make money from doing MyTube?"

Yumiko: "Ahahaha! Not at all. I don't have nearly enough subscribers and view count to be making any kinda hard cash. But, I love doing it. Hopefully, I work my way up to it. A little passive income can go a long way. You just gotta build up your foundation! Nope! But I do work with mom at the shop from time to time. Sometimes if I'm extra nice, she'll let me off early. Haha! Nepotism at its finest!"

Hachiman: "You're so ambitious. Aren't you scared that it won't work out?"

Yumiko: "The whole MyTube thing? The only thing I was never certain about was… you know who… It's why I don't speak to my family about my love interests. Because he'd kinda leave me in the dark. But normally, when I see a path to a goal, I latch on to it."

Hachiman: "So you don't ever see yourself failing at something."

Yumiko: "That's not true. It's always in the back of my mind. It's why I always have to work my hardest! It's what you do with your time that counts, Hikio. It's why I appreciate the small things that help me reach my goal. You on the other hand, well, you're spending most of your time thinking… about what-ifs. If I did that, I wouldn't wanna start anything. I'd be too scared to risk what I already have. But you know, lately, it seems I may need some of what you've got."

Hachiman: "You're not wrong. And I guess I should take after you more too. Find something I'm really ambitious about and put up that risk."

Yumiko: "We're kinda similar to Neku and Rokugo, you know. You overthink like Neku, and I just do, like Rokugo!"

Hachiman: "You also have a hot temper like him too."

Yumiko: "Whatevs! I was just making a point. If I had to be like anyone from Superhero Academia, it'd be more like Yaoyoru! She's hot, popular and is at the top of her class! Plus her superpower is so cool, being able to create anything is such an underrated superpower!"

A look of shock hits my face. Had I known she was well versed in this genre of nerdom, I would have…

Yumiko: "Hey! What's that look for?!"

Hachiman: "It's nothing. I just never knew you watched Superhero Academia."

Yumiko: "Watch it?! Huh! I'm all caught up with all thirty-one volumes! So talk nerdy to me! BTDubs, that villain arc on chapter 225 did not translate well in the anime adaptation!"

Hachiman: "Oh, you're that kinda fan…"

Yumiko: "I'm just sayin, that the anime quality seems to be dropping."

She looks up at me smiling. I guess the franchise is popular enough that even normies like her know about the show's success. Plus anime and manga have been on the rise these last few years. It's not like it's an all-inclusive club like before.

Yumiko: "Didn't think I knew about anime, did ya."

Hachiman: "You kinda caught me off guard. Sure."

Yumiko: "Well, I guess you have a lot to learn about my likes and dislikes… oh I wanted to ask you something too."

Hachiman: "What is it?"

Yumiko: "Last night, were you awa…"

Hachiman: "Nope, I didn't hear a thing. It was such a busy night."

Yumiko: "Ah… I see…"

Yumiko seems relieved but upset at the same time. Did I say something wrong? How does one solve this problem?

Hachiman: "As I said, it was so busy that it was hard for me to get any wink of sleep…"

Yumiko: "So you did…"

Hachiman: "Hey, let's ride the Ferris Wheel before leaving."

My face is starting to turn into tomatoes again. Yumiko grabs hold of my hand… reluctantly I intertwine my fingers with hers. This feels like a dream. When will I wake up? I'm waiting for the part where the wedding dress consumes my body. But luckily none of it happens. And after what seems like an endless fantasy, we conclude our trip and make our way to the bus station that takes us to a beach that Yumiko claims to be the best on the island. The sun is no longer scorching hot, so this is pretty good timing for a beach trip.

She's snuggling up to me on the bus ride. Like some abandoned puppy that's found a new owner. Without overthinking the situation, my arm wraps around her. We are friends after all. Is this what friends do? Hold hands, cuddle, bite each other? Maybe a best friend... Are we? It's not like we know anyone here. It's literally just the two of us. And if I'm to play her fiance, this would be a good excuse for practice. She takes one glance at me from her position as I stare back at her. Then she closes her eyes and smiles. Her rosy cheeks brighten. For the rest of the trip, I contemplate life and how I fit in hers. That's until my phone starts to beep. Without waking up the sleeping blonde, I manage to take out my phone. The caller ID read, Yukinoshita. Why is she calling me this instant? I pick up the call.

-Yumiko POV-

He thinks I'm asleep, but I can hear him. He's talking to Yukinoshita. He promised me he wouldn't bring her into our vacation. What the hell! Don't I matter to him?! What else do I have to do to get him to understand?! One phone call and she could very well turn the tides in her favor. So am I going to just let this happen?! I'm pretty sure she's asking how he's doing and not getting all love-struck with me. Last night, when he called me by my given name, I could hardly contain my excitement that I nearly cried. We've finally taken our relationship on a first-name basis.

So what can I do without acting too pushy? What if I just tighten my grip around his waist… Maybe rub my face on his chest; he's kinda sweaty though… WHATEVS! This is urgent! His hand rubs my body in comfort, but he won't put his phone down! It's not working! Maybe if I do the opposite. Distancing myself from him might lodge it in his brain… or it could backfire on me. Given the situation, things could be a lot worse. Yukinoshita and heaven forbid, Yui, could physically be here with us. But let's not jinx this vacation. It's only a phone call… So why the hell is he taking forever with her?! I'm right here if he wants to talk to someone! It's getting me hella pissed! After about a thirty-minute bus ride, we made it to our stop. He was practically on the phone the entire time! We step off the bus and walk toward the beach.

Hachiman: "Hey so, what's up with all these resort-style buildings?"

Yumiko: "Didn't I tell you? Father owns this resort chain. You could even say that this beach is owned by my family. But don't worry, he's not here. He's usually working from Tokyo, it's where their headquarters are stationed. Come on, this way."

Leading the way to the private beach, we make it inside a massive front entrance of my father's resort. I flash my ID card and sign my name on a check-in list as the front desk attendant verifies my identification. After he greets us with the utmost respect, Hikio and I head towards the back exit that leads to the private beach. A couple of small huts to the rear end of the beach offer: paddle boards, floaters, boogie boards, food, drinks, and practically anything you may want. Canopies occupy the greater part of the sanded area as it's provided exclusively for resort goers, and since it's his first time coming to a place like this, I let my boy pick out where he wants to sit. Surprisingly he picks out one that's a bit closer to the water. I figured he'd want one hiding off somewhere in the corner. We lay down our beach blanket and make ourselves comfortable.

Hachiman: "Wow, now if only all beaches offered this type of quality service. It would eliminate bringing your own stuff."

Yumiko: "It's not exactly free… well, for us it is. But resort guests have to pay."

Slowly and erotically, I start to take off my jean shorts in front of the boy I'm most infatuated with. Other people stare, but the only eyes that matter to me are his. Engrave this in your brain, Hikio! Does Yukinoshita have a body like mine? That girl makes a better surfboard than a potential girlfriend! Hahaha! Okay, that might be a bit rude of me to say, but she's messing with my guy! Just back off bitch, and everything will be fine between us. I'd even try to befriend her, only because I know how important she is to him. But the moment you cross me, I'll be sure to give you hell along the way. And because of that call earlier, I have to work extra hard to erase whatever the hell it was you two were discussing! I show off my stunning two-piece white bikini with some intricate lining in its overall design. Bought this while I was in Shibuya the other day. Too bad he couldn't see me try it on. Is his nose bleeding yet?

Hachiman: "Umm… Yumiko, can you go change in the fitting room? People are staring…"

Yumiko: "What? Why should I?! Their only shorts. It's a beach after all. It's not like I'm wearing underwear underneath… THAT CAME OUT SO WRONG!"

Hikio's cute flushed face is making my face turn red too. Crap, why'd I say it like that! Think before you speak! Get it together girl!

Yumiko: "Ahem! …Quit being so weird. I have my bikini underneath. I swear you need to up your game. Now, l-l-lemme help you with your shirt. Lift your arms up, babe."

Hachiman: "Hey, I'm not incompetent! I got it!"

He quickly took his shirt off without hesitation. It could be that he didn't want me to remove any clothes from him. So adorbs. Gawking at this pale friend of mine… Hmm… if he could just build a little bit of muscle… Still, this boy… It's because it's Hikio's bare body. He pulls out sunscreen from his bag. It's the spray-on kind. Gross. It's kinda too late for sunscreen. If he wanted to apply it, he should have put some on before we left for the theme park. He's so clueless. But moments like these are what make me love his ditsy side even more. He tries to apply some on his back but struggles to reach certain areas. So hopeless. I crawl over to him to help better assist.

Yumiko: "Let me help you with that. Hold still."

Hachiman: "It's fine, I almost got it…"

Yumiko: "Calm down. You're acting like I have cooties or something."

Hachiman: "It's… this is a first for me is all…"

Yumiko: "Going to Superhero Academia Theme Park was a first for me. We had fun. Didn't we."

Hachiman: "Yeah. I guess we did."

I rub his slender body after spraying on the sunscreen. I try to keep him talking so he's calmer. His skin is so smooth. I wonder how he gets his skin to be this pretty. Most girls would kill to have perfect skin. I rub the back of his neck to finish up. He turns back around to look at me. And we just stare at each other. His eyes… their soul-piercing. I can't help but turn away.

Hachiman: "You okay?"

Yumiko: "Err… yeah! It's your turn to apply some on me now!"

Hachiman: "No way. I'm out!"

This boy!

Yumiko: "Hey! I helped you out. You could at least do me!"

Hachiman: "Yeah but… fine."

Good. Finally growing a pair… eek* He literally sprayed sunscreen all over my face and turned away! Jerk! If you wanna play like that, then I'll have to just force you to notice me! I pounce on the boy nagging him. Telling him how cruel and unfair he's being. And after a while, he gives up. As punishment, I'm making him rub me down… although… I've never had anyone touch me like… that before. Maybe this isn't such a good idea. NO! Don't get chicken feet Yumiko! I undo my top and lay face down, exposing my bare back.

Hikio can't help but gawk at my perfect body. But any normal straight male, would. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous though. This entire situation is new to me too. But it's the perfect moment! Remember, I have him all to myself. No one is here to disrupt that. The moment he agreed to this trip, is the moment I set my traps to woo him. Honestly, I thought I'd have to convince him harder for him to agree to this trip happening. Making sporadic decisions like this isn't like his old self. He's changing… am I responsible for that? Whatever the case, it's a nice change of pace for him.

Yumiko: "Be gentle… kay?"

Hachiman: "If you're so worried about me being too forceful, I can go find an attendant to do this for you! Hold on, I'll be right back!"

Yumiko: "Hikio! You sit your butt back down and rub that sunscreen all over my body! Or I swear Heaven help you!"

Hachiman: "Ri-Ri-Right… Gulp*"

He starts off spraying a little bit… it's cold, and it catches me off guard as I let out a slight moan.

Hachiman: "I CAN'T DO THIS!"

I look over at the agitated boy and cheer him on. The truth is, I wanna be touched by him. I've been doing all the instigating, but feeling him would make my mind go insane!

Yumiko: "You got this. You're doing good. Just go slowly… Start with rubbing it all over my back before it dries out."

When his finger touches my bare skin… My Gawd! This feels like heaven! I don't want him to stop… my chest is feeling funny and my face is probably giving out some weird looks. Just from my back. Maybe his true calling is to be a massage therapist. Then again, I don't want him feeling up anyone else but me. I can't let him know how good he's doing.

Yumiko: "You can be a bit more forceful on my lower back. Also, don't forget my legs and thighs."

He nods wearily. He's still so nervous, still so cute. He doesn't deny me though. Honestly, I could do my lower back and legs on my own, but how can I not pass this up? Thank you Rom-Com Gods for this perfect moment. Next, he applies more sunscreen on my lower back. That's the spot! Dig in deep Hikio. Being active, playing tennis, and working, I hadn't known how much physical stress built up, but I feel all that tension leave soon as he presses against me.

Yumiko: "Hikio, if you could, press down a little harder. Yeah, that's it… moan*"

I couldn't help it! It comes out on its own! Shut up!

Hachiman: "Should I stop? Sounds like you're in pain…"

Yumiko: "Believe me, you're doing an amazing job. Now, my thighs next… if you don't mind."

Crap, I just said I wasn't going to tell him how good he's doing and here I tell him he's doing an amazing job! Hikio sprays on my legs and thighs. Maybe I do prefer the spray-on sunscreen more than the lotion one. Regardless, I bet it would feel just as good if not better. Hikio, you're an angel! Yes, that's it, work my thighs in. You're getting better each second. I could get addicted to this. My body could be yours if you wanted it. All you really have to do is say those spellbinding words. I know you heard me last night; asking you to go out with someone like me. And I get you still have some reserve. It's why you avoided the conversation earlier at the park.

The thing is, after today, I'm pretty sure I'll have you wanting me more and more, regardless of how much you try to resist me. He finally finishes, he forgot my other areas, but we'll save that for later. When we do more grown-up things together. I ask Hikio to tie my bikini top for me, and he does so without complaint. But I could do with that uninterested look on his face. He seems kinda exhausted and frustrated. Can't blame him though. I asked a lot from him.

Turning back around, I expose my glistening body to the boy that pampered me. My arms open wide as to an invitation for him to come in closer. I really want you in my arms right now. He moves in closer to me, as he always should, and I embrace him tightly. After a moment, he holds on to me too. We might have conditioned each other to always be touching like this. It's becoming more natural, to say the least. I remember when he grabbed my hand once and I thought he was the grossest thing to ever touch me; now, I can't imagine not having him in my arms. I whisper in his ear.

Yumiko: "You know, I was really happy last night. When you spoke my name."

Hachiman: "Well, I mean. I couldn't very well use your last name in that household. Everyone with the surname Miura would get confused."

Yumiko: "Is that your excuse? In any case, I would be right to assume that our relationship has gotten closer."

Hachiman: "Yeah… I feel the same."

Yumiko: "I don't just let anyone rub me down like that you know. It felt amazing."

Hachiman: "…"

He's speechless. My cute boy.

Hachiman: "I get how you feel about me. And I'm not quite there yet. It hasn't even been a year since I have gotten to know you, but it's like things are going too fast. Kinda makes me wonder how long we'd last if we were you know… officially start dating as a couple."

Yumiko: "I was talking about being close friends. But if you wanna talk about last night, I'll have you know, I'm someone who's committed through and through. No matter what it is. Plus, I'm like super infatuated with you. So even if it doesn't last, it'll be years down the line. And it'd most likely be your fault."

Hachiman: "That's kinda harsh…"

Yumiko: "I know how to make you happy…"

He pulls back a bit, still holding me, but he looks me in the eyes, as I confidently stare back at his smiling. I won't kiss him on the lips, but I do want to kiss him. I kiss him on the cheek, then the neck then his forehead last.

Hachiman: "I can't get too caught up in this moment."

Yumiko: "Was it something Yukinoshita said to you over the phone? Is that why you're having reserves?"

That's right, I brought it up. I promised to be open with him, so this is his chance to do the same.

Hachiman: "Erg* No, but she did remind me that I have friends waiting back home. In a sense, I'm expected to return as though nothings changed. I'm pretty sure even Hayama would appreciate it."

Yumiko: "Shhh... Don't say his name. We promised... So it's either: choose to be happy with me, or choose your old life."

Hachiman: "It's much more than that. But in lameness sense, sure. Things will start to move rather quickly after summer vacation. Komachi is even worried about what this trip would do to me."

Yumiko: "I'm not the one who brought up this talk about boyfriend-girlfriend relationships. If you don't want things to change, then just say so. Stupid Hikio. I've got a choice for you: do you wanna get bullied by others again, or get closer to finding what it is to feel genuine love? I thought this is what you were searching for?"

Hachiman: "Those scenarios are completely nuanced by the fact that one doesn't mean the other won't exist regardless of what I choose."

Yumiko: "So let me get this straight, you're not satisfied being with me. Am I not interesting enough for the great Hachiman Hikigaya?!"

Hachiman: "I didn't say that."

I shove this infuriating boy off me.

Yumiko: "Well what the hell are you trying to say? Because it sounds like I can't even be a friend to you without changing anything from what you have! Do you only obey what others ask of you: Yui, Yukinoshita, your sister, Iroha, Hayato… Am I the only person that's excluded from that list?! What about you?! What is it that you want?!"

Hachiman: "Yumiko, just calm down…"

Yumiko: "Don't ever tell me to calm down! How would I expect someone like you to have feelings for me if you don't even know how to love yourself?! Maybe I am wasting my time. I'm doing my best Hikio, I don't know if you see that, but I don't want to put in the effort if I know that it would just lead to a dead end. I'm not asking you to be my boyfriend, but figure out what it is you want. Because I can't keep playing this game with you. I'm going for a walk. Later."

One dumb phone call. That's all it took. Whatever she told Hikio, it affected his thinking. Made him contemplate losing what he's so accustomed to. Still afraid of change. Still making excuses. I threw out some harsh words, but he needs to reflect on more than just his own life, but his life with me. Call me selfish, I don't care. I'm never going to completely change for someone else. Sure some of the things I said were kinda outlandish, I don't think I could ever live a life without him in it now. But, why call me by my given name if not for furthering our relationship? It's changing him but hurting him? How's that even possible?! I'll tell you how, because of that damned Ice Queen of Soubu High!

I guess a more caring person wouldn't let him choose, they'd just give in to him. He's such a sweet boy that I wish I would do just that, but I don't want to lose him after I lost him before, those many years ago... So he's going to have to decide. Either go back to his old life, or one with me. But if he chooses the latter, where does that place me? My path was always so clear when he came back into my life; but if he's gone, it's not like I can go back to someone like Hayato. He'd be accepting without a doubt, but I'd rather not. Maybe I'm not as strong as I make myself out to be. I get lonely and crave the attention and affection of another… so what will he choose?

End.
