Part 16: Trouble in the storm
As Ellie finished getting dressed by putting on her jacket, "Is it really that, I did throw up a few times during last week," she thought still wondering if she could be pregnant. She was brought out of her thoughts when someone knocked at the door, "Hey Ellie you up yet, were suppose to go on patrol today," Lily said.
Ellie then sighed before picking up her backpack and her gun, "Ill go ask David about it when I get back," she thought before opening the door and finding Lily waiting with Dina.
"Hows the soon to be bride?" Dina asked smiling.
"Much better after that surprise," Ellie said smiling as they walked past Joels house.
"You know since you and Johnny are getting married shouldn't you move to a bigger place," Lily said.
"Yeah I guess your right, ill ask him about it tonight," Ellie said before they started heading towards the bar.
As they walked through the town they noticed many of the people waving at Ellie, a lot of them being from Philips group, "The whole towns probably heard about it by now," Lily said smiling at Ellie.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Tommy radioed Chris about it," she said smiling.
"Did Johnny tell you anything about the meeting yesterday?" Dina asked looking serious and Ellie shook her head no.
"I was tired last night and he had to get his haircut this morning," she said.
"He picket a bad time for it, I heard theres going to be a snow storm coming by," Lily said before looking up at the clouds.
"Well we better check where Maria wants us to go today," Dina said as they opened up the entrance to the bar and finding a crowd getting food.
"Hey you three over here," Maria said from the counter where she was sitting with a glass of water. As they got closer Ellie noticed she seemed a little tired.
"You doing alright Maria, your not looking to good," Ellie said.
"No this is nothing, though from the way I woke up this morning I have a good feeling what this might be," Maria said smiling, "Me and Tommy have started trying to have a kid," she said.
"Maria, that's great," Ellie said.
"Thanks, with things quiet for now we thought it was the time to start," Maria said holding a hand over her stomach.
"That seems to be with the other members of the group, it was few months back when Philip announced his wife was pregnant," Lily said.
"He was nervous when he asked Johnny if he could take a break from work after he found out," Ellie said, "But he was fine with it after what happened when Steve and Rachel were expecting Sam," she said.
"Well looks like everyone is getting along," Dina said smiling while looking down.
"You and Jessie still not talking?" Ellie asked.
"Yeah," Dina said.
"Well you could always try talking to him, you two looked okay before you broke up last week," Lily said.
"Yeah ill think about it, so Maria where are we looking around today," Dina said looking like she wanted to change the topic.
"Alright, you wont be going far today though," Maria said before pulling out a map, "Also Ellie how are you feeling after last night?" She asked.
"I feel a little better after getting some sleep last night, I'm planning to go see David after we get back if I'm not any better," Ellie said smiling nervously.
"Well if your sure, Lily, Dina please make sure to look out for her okay," Maria said and the the two of them nodded before she started pointing out the area they were to check. Much later after the three of them left on horses, in a building not far from the bar. Was a barber shop where people could get their haircut.
David walked in as he looked at Philip who was sitting in a chair and across from him was the barber cutting Johnnys hair, "Morning David, you here to get a cut today too?" the barber asked.
"No I'm just here to talk to the future groom," David said smiling as he sat down next to Philip, but as he walked past Johnny he could clearly see the scars in his head.
"Yeah congratulations by the way Johnny, I knew someday when the two of you got older you would want to marry her," the barber said smiling, "Before long youll start having kids too,".
"One thing at a time please," Johnny said while still getting his haircut but still ended up smiling.
"That's actually what I'm here to talk about, not that Ellie is pregnant," David said.
"Is it about them getting his power, some of the people from my group did wonder about that," Philip said looking confused.
"That's very unlikely given all the treatment Johnny had to go through to get that power along with his healing," David said.
"No one should ever have to go through that," Johnny said as the barber got closer to finishing his hair.
"I dont think people like the idea after seeing your scars," Philip said.
"Well when it comes to being immune it looks like your kids wont have to be injected with the cure," David said.
"So your saying they could be born immune," Philip said sitting up, paying attention when Tommy walked in as Johnnys hair was finished being cut.
"Hey theres the future groom," Tommy said smiling.
"Morning to you too Tommy," Johnny said as he got up from his hair, "If they are born immune it would still be safer if they're given the cure, especially if they accidentally end up place filled with spores," he said.
"Sounds about right," Philip said before the door was pushed open revealing Dean who looked like he was out of breath, "Hey whats going on," he said.
"Chris's people just arrived and one of them is hurt, bad," he said before Johnny quickly grabbed his coat most of them ran to the entrance while David headed to the medical office.
"Alright everyone move," Tommy said as they walked through a small crowd and finding Chris along with a few of his men. One of them lying on the ground with a bullet hole in his leg as he looked in pain.
"Tommy, Johnny," Chris said as he walked over to the two, "I was hoping I would be coming over with a smile but things have gotten bad," he said.
"Johnny," the wounded man said and Johnny recognized him as one of the men who came with him to Boston.
"Here let me see," Johnny said as he checked the leg, "The bullet didn't go all the way through, David where are you," he said speaking the last words out loudly.
"He was with the WLF," the man said making Johnny look surprised, "I went to go check something out and found the guy walking around, I was about to run to Chris when the guy shot me in the leg," he said looking annoyed.
"I heard the gun shot before we ran over, he was gone by the time we reached him," Chris said and Johnny noticed him clenching his fists.
"I saw him run towards the mountains, don't know where though," the man said before groaning in pain again before David walked over with a group people carrying a stretcher.
"Come on, we gotta get him treated quick," David said looking serious.
"Looks like the WLF is making the first move," Tommy said before brushing hand through his hair.
"Yeah but why would they come after us," Philip said looking annoyed.
"Johnny," Joel said walking over with Jessie.
Johnny stood up as he took a breath, "If their in the area we need to warn the others, Tommy start setting up teams, Dean your with me," he said.
"Got it," he said before looking confused as the gate opened and Bill drove in.
"We got trouble," Bill said as he got out of the truck and noticed Chris's man being picked up, "What happened?" He asked looking at Johnny.
"People from the WLF are in the area, you didn't happen to see a man running around the area did you," Johnny said.
"No but theres a large group of infected coming from the mountain, I set up some traps while I was on my way here but theres a chance it wont get them all," Bill said.
"Lily went out patrolling with Ellie and Dina earlier," Dean said looking worried.
"Ill go look for them and warn them about what's happening," Jessie said.
"Me and Joel will go patrol the area, see how much infected were dealing with," Tommy said.
"Ill join you," Philip said looking at Johnny for permission who sighed before nodding.
"Just make sure to be careful, lets make sure to warn everybody else about the infected too," he said.
"I got some trucks coming too, they're just trying to get through the snow," Chris said as Johnny noticed one of the trucks heading towards them.
"Alright, Dean lets get ready to head out," Johnny said before he headed towards home, "Please be safe out there Ellie," he thought looking serious.
Meanwhile far from Jackson, "Alright looks like were here," Lily said as she finished climbing up the ladder in a large building. It looked like an old radio station but there were couches and a table set up. There was also a large window that had a good view of the area.
"Good, I need a break," Ellie said before taking a sitting on the couch.
"Ill sign us in," Dina said before opening up a copy book on the table. The building was near a settlement and people would sometimes stay in the building for when their keeping an eye out or when they needed to take a break from patrols.
"You guys really think I should talk with Jesse, I mean how do I know hes the one for me," she said looking confused.
"Well you two did get along well back when we were all still in training," Ellie said remembering the shooting range.
"I know that if I lost Dean I wouldn't feel right, I really care about him and I want to see where our future goes," Lily said looking down.
"So you love him," Ellie said.
"Kind of looks like that doesn't it," Lily said smiling.
"Even though his group used to be Jackson's enemy," Dina said calmly.
"Hey that was years ago," said Lily looking annoyed as she stepped away from the window.
"Yeah they're working for Johnny now and Deans a member of the team," Ellie said, "Philip has been working hard to make things right," she said before sitting back with a hand on her stomach.
"Ellie," Lily said looking worried before sitting down next to her.
"I'm alright, it just I think I might know why Ive been feeling sick," she said before Dina spoke up loudly.
"Oh shit, your pregnant aren't you," she said making Lily look surprised.
"I'm not sure and I'm just thinking about it because I have thrown up a few times and its been a while since my last period," Ellie said looking down.
"Did you get checked out," Lily said.
"I was going to later, I mean I only thought of this, this morning," Ellie said, "What am I going to do," she said.
"I know what we can do," Dina said before pointing out the window, "Theres a store not far from here, we can get what we need there," she said.
"Alright, come on we still have to finish patrol and then will head back," Lily said looking at Ellie.
"Alright," Ellie said before sighing and standing up.
They left the outpost after making sure their weapons were okay and headed towards the store, "Looks like there hasn't been any infected here," Dina said as they got closer.
"We have been clearing up more of the area around Jackson over the last few years and the cure helps," Lily said as they stopped the horses in front of the store.
Dina opened the door and they walked inside. As they walked around they noticed no infected were around, "Alright looks like were all good, now what can help us here," Ellie said looking confused.
"It's somewhere around here," Dina said before they reached the pharmacy area, "Good theres one here," she said before picking up a small box.
"Is that a pregnancy test," Lily said.
"Back when you went to Boston we did a lot of searching for medical supplies after we found out Rachel was pregnant and I remembered seeing these," Dina said before handing Ellie the box.
"Alright, guess Ill go find a bathroom," Ellie said taking a breath as she looked at the box. Later as the snow was falling Philip who was with Joel and Tommy were walking through an building shooting infected.
"Hey do you hear that," Tommy said and they listen to hear a woman struggling.
"This way," Joel said before they ran outside and found a woman struggling to get past the fence with infected trying to attack her.
"Go ill cover you," Philip said before taking out his pistol and started shooting as Joel pulled the woman away from the fence.
"You alright," Joel said.
"Yeah," she said.
"Come on we need to move," Tommy said as they ran into the building with the infected chasing after them.
"Through here," Joel said as they pushed open two doors.
"We need close it," Philip said before noticing a large crate near the door, "This should buy some time,".
"Here ill help you," said Tommy as Joel and the woman shot down the infected heading for them.
"What now," Joel said looking serious as they noticed most of the doors were shut.
"How about through there," the woman said pointing at the open window.
"Seems like our best shot," Tommy said before finding more crates on a trolley, "Philip help me move this," he said before they began pushing.
"They're coming through the windows," the woman said as infected climb in.
"Don't worry we got you covered," Joel said as Tommy and Philip pushed the trolley. Philip then noticed the woman was a good shot.
"Has she done this before," he thought looking confused before they pushed the crates into place.
"Alright were good," Tommy said before they climbed outside. They ran outside as the snow was coming down and they dodged the infected heading towards them before they reached another outpost.
Philip shut the door as Tommy checked on the woman, "You good," he said.
"Yeah I'm alright," she said before they heard infected at the other entrance.
"Tommy we cant stay here," Joel said looking serous as he took out his shotgun.
"It will hold," Tommy said before they heard more infected at the door.
"Tommy we have to go," Philip said as he took out his pistol.
"My people have a place nearby, big house with a gate," the woman said calmly.
"Do you know it," Philip said looking at Tommy who nodded.
"Yeah it will do, lets go," he said before they got on their horses just as the infected got through the doors. They rode outside as Philip looked at the woman who was on Tommys horse.
"Could she be with the same group as that man, better be careful," he thought as he looked at the radio in his pocket.
