Chapter 8

Nathan tripped over another rock on his way to the headstone. He cursed softly since his big toe took the brunt of it. His last interaction with Elizabeth was much better than the past few had been. She almost seemed, well, like she was trying to tell him something.

He sat down in the grass, pulling his coat around him tightly. He played with the grass not sure how he was going to say the things he wanted to say.

He took a deep breath and sighed. "So uh Jack, I just finished talking to Elizabeth and the air has been cleared I think." He grinned at the warmth that he felt as he left her home earlier. "I just want you to know that I can no longer deny this. I am deeply in love with Elizabeth. I want your blessing in some way to show me it's okay if I pursue a relationship with her. I know that I am indirectly responsible for your death. I did not plan to come here and fall in love. But she is…" he paused trying to get around the lump in his throat, "well, just the most wonderful woman I have ever known." He swallowed hard, again determined to keep his emotions intact. "I don't know if she will have me, but I will do everything I can to show my intentions to her. I have crept around my feelings too long."

There was a rustle in the bushes and he jumped. He looked into the distance but didn't see anything. He shrugged, it must have been a dog or a rabbit.

He turned back to Jack's grave. "Anyway, I just wanted to let you know and again, I hope for your blessing."

He stood and turned to leave. Then he took another look at the small stone in the ground. "I also want to say good-bye. I will not be visiting you again. Thank you for allowing me to share with you. Not that you had a choice." He couldn't help giving a smirk when he said that. "But it has been good for me." He stood and saluted before he turned and walked back.

Henry had never been good at being quiet in the dark, but when he saw and heard the conversation in the graveyard, he froze with all his might. He had always been suspicious of Nathan Grant, but now it made sense. Elizabeth had been one of Henry's true friends. And Nathan demonstrated that he is a true gentleman. They would make a good pair. Henry grinned at the thought of Lucas's face when he finds out about this, but decided to keep this one close to the vest.
