Chapter 7
It took me a year to accept that Elizabeth chose Lucas! I really feel like the writers of season 7 did the fans a disservice, I feel so betrayed and jerked around. I am still Team Nathan, and always will be! So I will be wrapping this up with the ending I wanted (a bit sooner than the writers did).
Nathan returned to his cabin slightly, no very, embarrassed at how he reacted to the events of the day. He removed his serge and layed it on the chair near the washbasin. He splashed water on his face.
"Uncle Nathan?" Nathan started at the sound of his niece's voice. He turned to see Allie in the doorway.
"Allie? I thought you were at Opal's house." He noticed her pale face. "Allie, are you okay?" He opened his arms and embraced her as she fell against him shaking but emotionless.
"Allie, it's okay." He calmly spoke as he held her. She nodded against him. "Have you had any dinner?" She shook her head. "Okay, let's make some pancakes , does that sound good? I have to let you go though or it might be tricky to cook." He gently rubbed her back. She stepped away from him and slightly grinned. "I will need you to go and wash up." Allie nodded and turned to go upstairs.
Nathan picked up his serge to put away in the closet. He noticed a button was missing. "Hmmm…" he mused, "Must have come off when I was in the trees."
Elizabeth put Jack to bed soon after she got home. She decided that she needed to go on a walk to visit Jack's grave. She bundled up and went out, knocking on Rosemary's door letting her know where she was going. Rosemary promised to check on little Jack in 30 minutes if Elizabeth had not returned.
Elizabeth walked to the cemetery slowly trying to process the evening and day's events. She arrived at Jack's grave and brushed the dirt off the headstone. She sat down in the setting sun quietly, for once with nothing to say. Usually she could muse about things for a while, but tonight she was silent. She simply stared at the stone. She wasn't sure what she should be feeling right now. She was hurt, slightly embarrassed, and even angry at Nathan. Why did he bring so much passion out in her? Few people did that, no one since Jack.
Her eyes drifted down into the dirt at the flowers that often appeared from nowhere, especially in the past few months. Something caught her eye, barely glinting in the dimming light. She reached down and picked up a brass button. It was very similar to one that Jack had on his Serge. But how would one of his buttons get here? So close to the grave? Could it have been… "No." She shook her head subtly. She picked it up and put it into her coat pocket. It would be a good addition to her button box.
As she walked home she glanced at the row houses, noticing that Nathan's light was still on. Would it be a good time to apologize? No, she decided. It had been a long day and he was probably turning in early. She turned towards her home and Little Jack.
The next morning Nathan was working when Elizabeth came in and confronted him. What she didn't say was that she noticed a missing button on the left side of his serge. As she left his office she had to pause for a moment, debating if she should mention her find. Nathan noticed her hesitation, and opened his mouth to persuade her to stay. Before he could say anything, Elizabeth walked out the door, closing it harder than necessary.
