OVERPOWERED CHAPTER 11: HERESY
SLANE THEOCRACY, INNER REALM OF MAN
"By Surshana's grace! How could such a tragedy happen, now of all times especially since the Sunlight Scripture just finished recovering its strength decades after that fiasco at the Elf Country border!"
"This had to be a fluke, a false report from our enemies to deceive us. It's just not possible…"
The Six Cardinals of the Slane Theocracy are currently arguing in panicked tones when they learned of the disaster that occurred in Carne Village. This small frontier village was supposed to be the perfect ambush site for Gazef Stronoff, the Warrior-Captain of the Re-Estize Kingdom and its strongest warrior.
It was a simple enough mission that any buffoon with two brain cells to rub together could accomplish. Nigun himself was given assurance that their unit was provided with more manpower and additional resources such as the sealing crystal that contained powerful magic to be used as a last resort. Now it and half of the Sunlight Scripture are gone.
The perpetrator of this massacre of the Theocracy's elite was a sorcerer that appeared together with an armoured companion, the sorcerer himself casting powerful magics beyond the capabilities of normal humans and even those that have entered the realm of heroes.
But the reports given to the Cardinals by the Windflower Scripture confirmed their fears. The Theocracy is no stranger to setbacks and obstacles to their never-ending mission of safeguarding humanity, but it seems they have reached a whole new low with one of their strongest military orders reduced in strength once again.
Raymond Zarg Lauransan, the Cardinal of Earth and overall leader of the Six Cardinals and Scriptures spoke. "Silence! While losing much of the Sunlight Scripture and an artifact deals a major blow to our strength, we must press on and move forward instead of bickering and wasting precious time." He said his piece to calm down his fellow cardinals before continuing.
"It appears we overestimated the ability of Nigun Grid Luin to lead the sensitive mission of removing Gazef Stronoff and now find ourselves vulnerable with the weakening of one of our most important units. But by the blessings of Alah Alaf, life moves on and so must we! This is just a minor setback in the grand plan of the Great Six!" Raymond's words had the intended effect and slowly the grumblings and doubts died down.
While the Sunlight Scripture have now been significantly weakened, it can still be rebuilt given time. For now, the Cardinals decided to send out a recall order to the other half of the Sunlight Scripture currently operating cleansing missions in the Outer Realm of Beasts and Monsters so that the rebuilding could begin. Everything was going to be alright, and nothing could make the situation worse.
That is until it did.
A messenger frantically ran into the room, looking close to death and out of breath. It was an intelligence officer from the Windflower Scripture responsible for maintaining communications with military forces of the Theocracy operating far from the homeland, this officer being a liaison for the Sunlight Scripture in the Outer Realm.
"Your Holinesses, I bring grave news from the Outer Realm! It's the Sunlight Scripture squads that operated there… All of them have been wiped out! We tried sending out messages and scrying spells to locate any members but only found dead bodies and destroyed camps! There are no survivors!"
The hope that blossomed after Cardinal Raymond's speech shrivelled up and died a horrible death as the colour drained from all six of the Cardinal's faces. Raymond himself looked like his bones turned to jelly as he slumped in his seat, horror written all over his face in the wake of the Six Scriptures now reduced to five.
"This is a living nightmare. Have we angered fate herself to spin the threads of destiny into a noose? The mighty bulwark of the Theocracy has now found a large chink in its armour that can never be mended…"
While the Cardinal of Earth gathered his thoughts and struggled to find the strength to straighten up in his seat, the Cardinal of Fire Berenice Nagua Santini, recovered some of her wits to ask for more details from the Windflower Scripture officer who delivered the news.
"Of course, Cardinal Berenice. Based on the investigations made by our agents stationed in the Outer Realm, we have determined that the ones responsible for the destruction of the Sunlight Scripture was not a monster or demi-human but a skilled human warrior with great command over magics and knowledge on the inner workings of the Scriptures."
All the cardinals snapped out of their melancholy to find rage in their hearts and clarity returning to their minds. Only one person would fit the bill of the description laid out before them. Someone who had the strength to triumph over the best of humanity while also possessing the knowledge on their operations to catch them off guard and eliminate the Scriptures with such efficiency.
The Windflower officer could see the looks on the cardinals faces that they themselves know who is responsible, but he decided to complete his report and state the name.
"The one responsible for this atrocity is Jasper Hart, also known as Bleeding Heart. Former member of the Sunlight Scripture and renegade member of the Black Scripture."
OUTER REALM OF MONSTERS AND BEASTS
Wiping out the remaining Sunlight Scripture in the Outer Realm turned out to be slightly harder than originally thought. While individually the Scripture members are no match for the powerful teacher and student, once they had time to plan and prepare accordingly, they measure up as the "greatest of humanity" as they always boasted.
The Sunlight Scripture uses extensive summoning and mass rituals to perform higher tier spells that number to seventh tier magic, calling forth strange metal monsters with wings called Archangel Flame and supportive magics that enhanced the large number of summoned angels to even give Jasper a run for his money. It would have been suicide for Jasper to tackle the Sunlight Scripture alone once he wiped out one squad only for the rest to bear down on him and overwhelm the old traveller.
Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on whose point of view, Jasper Hart is no longer fighting alone.
The Archangel Flames were instead used as "additional class material" by Jasper for his newly reunited student. The old traveller was more than happy give lessons in the middle of battle against the Sunlight Scripture on the nature of summons while his student frantically dodges blasts of fire and holy magic.
It turns out Felix had to do most of the fighting to get rid of the Sunlight Scripture than Jasper. With Felix having to face tides of angels while Jasper quietly dispatches the summoners who are stunned a human boy with one arm taking out summoned creatures that brought death to the Theocracy's enemies for centuries.
As always, the tough love treatment that Jasper gives Felix while training shows the desired results again. Felix can feel himself changing after every battle, his spells seem to be cast with more intensity and his sword swings having the strength to cleave through stone like butter with a hot knife.
Suffice to say, Felix is no longer the same green boy that appeared in the world alone and confused.
But constant vigilance never hurt anyone, and Jasper was more than happy to upgrade their usual spars with increasing intensity. His martial arts flaring more often and spells that would have laid waste to armies being matched by Felix with his own repertoire of spells and abilities. The lucky shot with the thunderlance spell that only scuffed Jasper seemed to have happened a lifetime ago as the proud teacher found himself having more minor injuries and scorch marks on his person.
Currently the master and apprentice duo were cleaning up after their latest attack on the Sunlight Scripture, with Felix counting the supplies in the camp and Jasper disposing of bodies and performing some rituals to prevent undead from being spawned.
Felix was in the middle of counting the numerous items that the Sunlight Scripture had and sighed. It wasn't that the loot they gained was little, but they just had so many items that Felix and Jasper couldn't possibly take it all with them.
"Suffering from success. It would be a shame to leave these supplies behind. Who knows if we need some extra rations or a healing potion to treat a few minor wounds without wasting mana. Really wished we were still in YGGDRASIL so I could just put them in my inventory or something…"
As Felix thought of the inventory function from YGGDRASIL, the potion in his hand was engulfed in a small portal like phenomena that swallowed it whole. The startled young adventurer let go of the potion to flail his arms in surprise before sensing the item in question still present and available to him.
"Hot damn. Guess I don't have to worry about luggage ever again."
The giddy young adventurer proceeded to store all the excess resources left behind by the Sunlight Scripture in his new inventory. After storing most of the items, he walked to where Jasper was finishing up his cremation and blessings of the dead to inform him of the new development regarding their problem with carrying supplies. Felix also asked if his teacher also had this skill too and was messing with his student to carry all their stuff as more training.
Jasper had a slightly surprised look before a knowing one replaced it. "Should have known you would also have that ability. And no lad this 'inventory' skill you have is 'unique'. I wouldn't be lugging around a bag and give added stress to these old bones if I had the same inventory ability that you did. There is a spell to do what you did but the tier magic is of a higher tier than what I'm capable of."
The old traveller had a thinking expression on his face, then told his student to keep this ability a secret from others as well as how he appeared in the New World. When Felix asked why, Jasper told him not to worry too much about it and just keep a low profile in order to avoid unnecessary attention.
"Its just that you wouldn't want people butting in your business and asking so many pesky questions when you want to enjoy your day. Trust an old man and keep this to yourself for now."
Felix nodded along and heeded his teacher's advice. On hindsight he really should be more cautious with who he reveals his true nature to. Aside from the crazies he might run into during his adventures in the New World, another player would probably be someone hostile. YGGDRASIL was infamous for its large PK community and culture, and he doesn't want to test out if he can respawn after dying to a douchebag farming low level noobs.
After packing up all the supplies into his inventory, Felix asked Jasper if there was another Sunlight Scripture camp close by for them to mop up in one go. His teacher could only shake his head and bring up the map they filched off the first group they encountered.
The map itself was more detailed than what Jasper had in his possession, with a few notes and details on specific areas. The main thing that caught his attention was the various marks that denoted Sunlight Scripture camps that were maintained by the Theocracy, each mark already had a big cross on them. The crosses were written by them to mark down the camps they took down.
All the marked camps have crosses on them. There were no more squads to take out since they already annihilated the last remnant Slane Theocracy presence in the Outer Realm.
"…What an anticlimactic end for an order that existed for hundreds of years since the time of their gods walking among them. I was expecting a more dramatic final fight against the Theocracy."
This predicament was both good and bad. It was a good thing that a genocidal force of snobs will never strut across the New World for at least a few decades before they rebuild. The bad news is that the Slane Theocracy probably has eyes on the ones responsible for this attack on one of their greatest military assets.
Even worse news, Felix and Jasper now have nothing left to do in the Outer Realm.
The old traveller himself picked up on this problem with his face shifting from happy in completing his original goal in the Outer Realm to pensive, thinking on what the next plan for both him and his student will be.
"…You know lad I'm starting to miss good old human civilization. How about we head back to the inner realm for some R R? Camping loses its appeal once you've been doing it for almost a decade."
Felix took a few minutes to digest what his teacher told him before bringing up a few major points the old man seemed to overlook.
"Whoa whoa whoa, hold on old man. I thought you said we can't be in the Outer Realm since you're public enemy number one in the Slane Theocracy. Won't that be like walking to our graves? You said it yourself; the Slane Theocracy has immense influence in the Inner Realm. They aren't going to let us skip and dance in the Inner Realm once news is out of you being spotted there."
The old traveller scoffed lightly and waved his hand in a dismissing manner. "I wouldn't dream of returning to the Inner Realm alone but I have reliable company with me now, don't I? Regardless of if we enter the Inner Realm or not, the Theocracy will still want our heads after this. Might as well be in the last place they would try to find us and buy a little more time before we face them."
"I really need to get some brochures for a retirement home just in case Jasper really does lose his marbles." The young adventurer griped in his mind as Jasper laid out his plans and reasonings for returning to the place that wanted him dead more than the human eating and enslaving lands of the Outer Realm.
"I guess it wouldn't hurt to see the other side of this world even if just for a moment before the Theocracy finds us. So, how are we getting there? Can we teleport to the Inner Realm?"
Jasper once again brought out several maps that detailed the New World and their current position. "A teleportation spell won't cover enough ground to even land in the closest Inner Realm country, so we're going to have to travel the old fashion way." His teacher proceeded to point at the nation on the map they had to cross in order to make into the Inner Realm; the Great Minotaur Nation.
Felix had learned much about the New World from his teacher, and the lessons came into play once again as he remembered what was taught about the Minotaurs and their nation.
The Great Minotaur Nation, also known as the kingdom of Asterion, is one of the strongest non-human nations in the world, being able to repel forces from both the inner and outer realms for centuries since its inception. The nation was founded by a legendary figure who lived hundreds of years ago, The Minotaur Sage.
The Minotaur Sage was an enlightened and powerful Minotaur who brought about great change in Minotaur society by uniting the disparate and primitive tribes under his leadership and establishing the nation. He was also famous for introducing revolutionary and controversial ideas such as modern appliances and medical practices.
But the most striking thing about the Minotaur Sage was his policy on humans. It was him that reformed the treatment of humans from livestock to slaves. His ideas were met with ridicule and scorn but accepted nonetheless with great success later.
Because of humans being used as cheap labour for petty matters like farming and construction, the Minotaurs were able to pool their efforts on building up their military to begin expanding and protecting their domain, their armies further enhanced by the artifacts and magic items left behind by the Minotaur Sage.
The young adventurer was confident in the skills of his mentor and himself, but this endeavour against the Minotaurs might be a wall that no amount of luck and force could breach. Felix asked his teacher with a deadpanned tone on how they would enter Asterion undetected and without trouble while still having strength to try entering the Baharuth Empire later.
Jasper had a happy look to his face which set of all the warning signs in his young apprentice's instincts, indicating an insane plan.
"That's the best part lad. We don't!"
"…What?"
"Forget a retirement home, I should just chuck him in a nuthouse and be done with it! Maybe I should also turn myself in if we make it out of here alive for agreeing to this plan to begin with…"
The young adventurer could only lament his choices and the senility of his teacher while they both waltzed to the borders of Asterion. It took a week of travel from the destroyed Sunlight Scripture camp the teacher and student pair were in. It seemed the Slane Theocracy was also using the scripture to observe the demi-human nation borders along with their extermination missions in the Outer Realm.
The border had a giant wall of stone that had a single fort that acted as an entrance to their territories. Both structures made from grey stone that appeared unblemished and pristine as if they were recently built. Maybe the material used were magically enhanced to not require much maintenance.
But perhaps the border's pristine state is because of the monstrous beings who guarded them.
They looked like the Minotaur merchants that Felix and Jasper dealt with in the past in that they are demi-humans who have the body of a bipedal bull. The similarities ended there.
The Minotaur soldiers that greeted them were clad in plate armour more suited for tanks and seemed unnecessary, as their muscles look hard enough to deflect even the sharpest blades. All the soldiers wielded large axes the size of a human adult, again Felix thought it unnecessary since these big boys could just tear someone apart with their bare hands easily. Other features that stood out were their sharp horns on their heads that could probably gouge a hole through steel.
"Halt humans! You trespass in lands treaded by hooves, where beings such as you only walk upon as thralls. Turn back unless you offer yourselves to service your betters." Snarled one of the Minotaur. As the soldier finished his friendly greeting, all his comrades proceeded to surround the teacher and student, while several more at a distance look to be operating large ballista enchanted with magic with how they seem to glow.
"Never a dull moment. I'm wonder what Jasper will pull out of his ass to risk shoving ours in the fire like this…"
Jasper was cool as a cucumber as he observed the surrounding soldiers. He slowly reached into his pockets and brought out a piece of paper and handed it out to one of the Minotaur. One of the beasts gruffly snatched the paper from his mentor's hand and read it. The Minotaur soldier's face lost its snarl and his entire form relaxed somewhat. He handed it to another soldier that read the contents before proceeding to tell all his comrades to stand down.
"The hell? Did Jasper give out his recipe for a killer goulash or something." Felix's thoughts continued to be jumbled up at the turn of events before snapping out of it as the Minotaur that addressed them earlier called gestured to the travelling duo to follow.
Felix and Jasper walked deeper into the border fortress as the gates behind them shut loudly with a rattle that reverberated throughout the place, cutting off any escape that the duo had. The young adventurer was still on edge despite the lessened hostility from the Minotaurs, as the hulking brutes still had their eyes on them.
They arrived in an empty room with two robed Minotaurs holding staves catered to their larger forms, the bull mages having the same intimidation factor of their warrior counterparts and the mysterious aura of magic casters. The soldier escort briefly explained that the capital of Asterion can only be accessed with a special teleportation ritual conducted by their mages, gesturing for the old traveller and his student to the middle of the room for the teleportation to begin.
"Direct access to their capital? What in the New World is going right now?" The tell-tale light of the teleportation spell activating interrupted Felix's thoughts as the Felix, Jasper and the Minotaurs in the room teleported to their destination.
It took Felix a few seconds to stop being dazed from the teleportation, thanks to his enhanced constitution from intense training and the harsh environment of the Outer Realm. He looked around his surroundings to find themselves in a city of great wonder.
The buildings in the city of Theseus had architecture of both medieval times with a modern twist reminiscent of buildings from the 21st century in his old world. The blue skies overhead and sun shining down on the city were just a small part of it being a paradise, the main thing that caught his attention were the people.
When first heard of slavery being widely practiced in the New World in both realms, he imagined the typical whips and chains and general misery, but the humans that were supposed to be enslaved in the Minotaur nation looked hale and happy.
The "enslaved" humans were walking around and mingling with their supposed masters, going about their day normally. If you took the Minotaurs and medieval theme out of the picture you would think this was a regular old city straight out of earth's ancient times.
Felix's thoughts were interrupted when the Minotaur once again gestured him and Jasper to continue following him to their unknown destination. Several Minotaur soldiers appeared to assist in the escort.
"Come humans. The sightseeing can be undertaken later. The king should not be kept waiting."
With their destination revealed, the small party walked deeper into the city and away from the area they teleported in, which was large pavilion of runic pillars that had more robed Minotaur magi overseeing them.
The party continued to walk through the brick paved streets of the grand capital, seeing the bustle of everyday life in the Great Minotaur Nation that showed Felix the first sign of civilization ironically in perhaps the most savage place in the New World by equally savage beings.
As they entered the inner parts of the city, the populace began slowly changing from having a mix of humans and Minotaur to the larger creatures being a common sight. The modern-esque buildings turning to more medieval yet elegant design. It seems they have entered the wealthier districts and are probably nearing the king's residence. The sight of the king of all Minotaur's "house" was remarkable.
Fitting for the ruler of an entire nation, the king's palace was a monument of the Asterion's prosperity. The walls of the castle look to be made from the same material of their border walls and forts, a grey stone that had a pristine look devoid of wear from time and exposure to the elements. But whatever more descriptions Felix could make of the castle will have to wait, as the relatively large escort arrived in front of its gates.
It was as if the Minotaurs are living reverse matryoshka dolls with how each of them gets bigger and more muscular than the last. The border guard that escorted them was huge, but even he paled in comparison to the royal guards of the palace, resplendent in more personalized armour and ornate weapons befitting their higher status as defenders of the king and the elite among their mightiest warriors.
"This is as far as the border guard are allowed to go, the royal guard will now take over as your escorts." With his last words said, the now dwarfed Minotaur of the border guard left to return to their station. The larger Minotaur guard strolling up to the dwarfed teacher and student to take them to their leader.
The castle's interior was much more complex than what the simple architecture outside told. Once they entered the gates of the palace, the inside was just a single large corridor with multiple large doors leading to unknown rooms. At the end of the corridor were two stairs that went up.
The residence of the king was known as the labyrinth castle or by its official name, Daedalus castle. "Labyrinth" is a fitting epithet for the king's castle as Felix developed a headache from how many stairs that they had to climb and rooms to enter before finally arriving to the throne room where the king was waiting.
The king of Minotaurs was just as large and muscle bound as the rest of his kin, with him being the same size as his royal guard instead of being even larger and taking up the space of the throne room. The king was dressed in simpler armour that looked to be made of bronze with a large axe at his side that didn't have any exotic modifications or decoration like his other Minotaur warriors. All in all, his appearance was plain and humble, not something you would expect from the ruler of a powerful demi-human nation.
But appearances are one thing, the king's aura and demeanour says more than any fancy weapons and armour could tell.
The Minotaur king had an aura of danger and serenity, not openly expressing hostility yet radiating danger all the same. He had a calm expression that looked out of place on the Minotaur's face since all his kin had a snarl or agitated look when looking at the human guests. They say the quietest man in the room is the most dangerous and, in this case, it also applies to a monster that can tear apart armies with just their bare hands.
Stepping in front of the king, all the Minotaurs and human servants in attendance knelt with only Felix and Jasper still standing. Felix was tempted to kneel but seeing his teacher still standing stoically he decided not to.
Besides, if they were both going to die today, he would rather perish on his feet than in submission.
"Outsiders! You stand in the presence of Andrius, King of the Minotaurs, Lord of the Cleaved mountains, the Axe of Asterion, Descendant of the Wise One and Great Hoof that tramples all!"
"Hey that reminds me of that one show about a lady angry about her missing lizards. Something about a game of chairs?"
As Felix muses on the herald's announcement of the king's titles, Jasper walked slowly to where the king was. His approach was not stopped by any of the guards or the king, allowing the old traveller to stand in front of the throne's steps to face King Andrius.
"Well, well, well if it isn't Jasper Hart himself. It almost felt like yesterday since our last meeting all those years ago in this very throne room. Yes, the memory might be decades old, but I always remembered it fondly to this day." Said the Minotaur king, his voice deep but smooth. His manner of speaking very articulate and without the rough tone common with other Minotaurs.
"And I do remember what I would do once we meet again, Jasper Hart. Prepare yourself."
That was the only warning the Minotaur king gave before he and Jasper clashed with their weapons, the force of the clash created a wave of force that pushed backed everyone and cracked the ground beneath them.
Felix was sent flying through the air, but fortunately acted quickly. He flipped through the air for a while before landing on his feet far away from where his teacher and King Andrius fought. Every other occupant in the throne room were quickly at the far side of it, spectating the fight.
The young adventurer found himself in another room that was connected to the throne room. It looked like he smashed through the doors that led to it which explained why his back felt a bit sore.
Remembering the circumstances that led to him blown here, he went to exit the room through the way he came in when someone blocked his path.
While he was glad that only one of the royal guards appeared to fight him, his opponent puts all the other monsters and beasts that he fought before to shame.
The Minotaur was as large and powerfully built as his kin, with several scars seen on his face with one of his eyes pale and scarred. His visual impairment didn't seem to detract from the danger that the veteran warrior radiated.
"Greetings young human. I am Brutus, captain of his majesty's elite guard. May I ask your name to formally begin our bout?" Brutus lacked the rough tone of his fellow Minotaurs and spoke with a grace befitting a noble. And just like his king, the captain of the royal guard possessed a subtle but powerful presence befitting an elite warrior.
"The name's Felix, apprentice to the crazy old man over there duking it out with your boss. Hey if we somehow survive this little tussle, can you guys hand me some brochures on some retirement homes for the elderly? Or maybe directions to the closest mental hospital in the Outer Realm?"
Brutus didn't deign to answer Felix's joke question and instead dig his hooves into the ground and assuming a sprinting stance. His body glowed indicating the activation of any Martial Arts the Minotaur captain is using, the technique briefly revealed as a he bellowed the name; [Martial Art: Furious Charge]
Felix didn't have time to get in another joke before the Minotaur captain began a furious charge that would have busted down the walls of any fortress and turned it to rubble.
"There's no need for violence! Oi chill out! Shield spell! Shield spell!" [Twin Boost Magic: Shield Wall]!
Felix's defensive spell burst to life in a cacophony of light as two translucent shields were erected in front of him, just in time for the charging Minotaur to slam into them. The meta-magic enhanced shields buckled under the strength of the attack with one shield breaking upon impact. The last shield was able to hold out for a few seconds and stopped the initial charge, but eventually broke and let out a shockwave that blew Felix away.
The dazed adventurer casted a quick [Durability] spell to lessen his impact against a wall. Dropping to the floor after his harsh landing, he blinked through the pain and saw that while the shields were easily broken it did stop the charging Minotaur.
"Wasn't expecting the shield to even slow down the big boy so this result is good despite feeling my bones crack again. I need some milk…"
Picking himself from the floor, Felix observed his opponent reeling from the effects of the shield stopping his charge. The Minotaur captain shook his head a few times and then looked at Felix.
If Felix wasn't so focused on planning his next move, he would see Brutus having a slight smile at the attack failing to breach the shield fully.
"Impressive display of magic human. I've been able to destroy countless army formations and even some of the golems of the demi-human coalition with my charge. You are the third person to survive and stop it. Now that we have our friendly greetings out of the way, it's time to get serious."
The captain of the royal guard reached for his axe that was equipped on his back and did a few practice swings. Each nonchalant swing causing gusts of air to blow around them. It made Felix curious if the axe was enchanted with some magic to manipulate the air or it was just the force of the captain's swings.
Regardless, he didn't like his chances if it were either or both.
Pressing his advantage, Felix decided to strike first and cast a few debuff spells in order to finish this quickly and help Jasper. By the booming sounds in the throne room where he was blown away, it didn't seem to be an even match. He could even see a few bright lights flashing as well as feel the room shaking quite a bit despite being far away.
"I wanna wrap this up quick and stop my teacher from breaking his record. If anyone is going to kick his ass, it's gonna be me!" With his piece said, the young adventurer started casting several tier spells to deliver a quick and devastating blow.
[Greater Strength] [Greater Dexterity] [Greater Speed]
The shining magical aura around Felix grew greater with each spell cast, he felt as though he could conquer the world with the amount of power building up inside. He capped off spell casting with enchanting Old Reliable.
[Enchant: Fireball] [Harden Steel] [Magic Weapon]
Felix acted quickly and dashed forward to strike at the Minotaur. Greatly enhanced by his magic, he easily sidestepped the axe swings and parried heavier blows to reveal a small chink in Brutus's armour.
[Martial Art: Fortress]
But the Minotaur captain anticipated Felix's actions and deflected the blow to his side, the armour holding up to the enchanted blade. The young adventurer could only grit his teeth as Brutus raised his unarmed fist to deliver a powerful punch.
[Martial Art: Iron Fist]
Felix felt pain unlike anything he has ever suffered through with the fist slamming into his stomach. He slumped down to the ground and clutched his bruised belly and possibly ruptured internal organs. A mix of bile and blood was building up in his mouth that he forced himself to swallow.
"Please that was a love tap. Get up boy! The fight has only begun!"
Blinking through tears and still feeling some blood dribbling down his mouth, Felix glared up to the Minotaur mocking him and casted a [Confusion] spell as a retort. While the captain was only mildly affected with his level of strength granting resistance to even stronger mental spells, the tier spell did its work and made him slightly confused.
Now having another opening to make his move, Felix once grasped his sword and struck true to the Minotaur's unarmoured neck.
[Martial Art: Reinforce Hide]
Brutus had enough wits to quickly cast a martial art to negate Felix's desperate strike. The sword strike still struck, but only managed to make a minor cut on the Minotaur's tough skin. It was thanks to the enhancement magics on the sword that a cut was even possible.
Felix took exception to this and casted [Maximize Magic: Open Wounds] to make the minor cut into a larger wound. Blood poured from the worsened wound and the unperturbed demi-human warrior let out a roar of pain.
While satisfied with dealing a major blow, Felix could still feel the injury that he received earlier. It was only with his previous buffs that he didn't die from the strike but was now in no condition for an extended fight.
[Martial Art: Dull Pain]!
Brutus felt the pain from his neck slowly subside and the bleeding lessening to a small trickle. His Minotaur physiology also allowed him to recover faster as the wound began healing once the magic that worsened its condition wore off.
He recovered enough to see that the young adventurer that became one of the few to push him to this state preparing another spell. The magic circle grew a little larger and his warrior senses felt the heat radiating from it.
[Maximize Magic: Grand Fireball]!
Unbeknownst to Felix, the Minotaur captain had his guard up and stopped underestimating him. He prepared a Martial Art at that moment the flames grew and shot towards him.
[Martial Art: Enhanced Magic Resistance]!
A massive ball of fire washed over the Minotaur's large frame. The area was alight with and heated from the powerful flames. Several banners and the carpet underneath them were also set on fire from the flickering flames that danced in the aftermath of the inferno.
"Pardon me. I prefer my steak well done." A last quip slipped out of Felix's mouth as he felt the last of his strength leave him, his head flopped on the ground and the pain in his abdomen becoming worse. He reached into his inventory for one of the potions that he stored earlier and drank all its contents. The pain began to dull enough for him to see the aftermath of his spell work…and how it amounted to nothing in the end.
As the flames slowly died down, a hulking figure stood in its place. The formidable Minotaur captain tanked the flames more easily than the cut that Felix inflicted earlier. In fact, the fire spell instead helped cauterize the only injury he made and assisted the Minotaur rather than dealing any amount of damage.
"Are you for real right now? Wait how did this spell cauterize your wound when my sword was on fire earlier but made you bleed? Logic does flies out the window here doesn't it-"
The young adventurer's criticism on the unfairness of everything was silenced as Brutus wasted no time to close the distance and slammed his fist on Felix's head. Even without Martial Art enhancements, the blow was so powerful that it created a crater under the critically injured human.
The Minotaur didn't stop his assault with just a punch as he reached for his axe. So far, all his attacks had been barehanded with the axe serving to block blows from Felix's sword.
Until now.
[Martial Art: Heavy Blow]
Brutus proceeded to slam the butt of the enhanced axe into Felix's healing abdomen, undoing the attempts of stemming the injury and inflicting greater pain than what the young adventurer has ever felt. The copious amounts of blood and bile was let loose from the mortally wounded adventurer's mouth. After a few wet coughs of bloody vomit, Felix was knocked out as the pain was too much to bear.
"Apologies for the harder blow. It would be dishonourable to not give it my all after holding back earlier. You truly are worthy of apprenticing under a man of Jasper Hart's calibre young warrior." The captain of the royal guard moved to gently lift the incapacitated adventurer, not paying any mind of getting some of the humans expended fluids on him.
The throne room looked like a tornado tore through the room and upended everything from the tapestries that once decorated the banners above and the rug that became shredded unrecognizable fabric strewn on the floor. The once majestic throne of the Minotaur king has now turned to rubble just like the some of the pillars across the throne room. The spectators of the battle had long disappeared as the fighting got fiercer and staying would be detrimental to one's health.
The only ones left were the two combatants that ravaged the entire room and nearly caused the palace itself to collapse from the force of their battle.
It was quite a bombastic way to greet old friends.
"Guess sitting your ass on the throne didn't turn you soft Andy! I can barely feel my arms after blocking that last strike from your axe." Jasper complimented his friend's strength while nursing the wounds he sustained from their "friendly" reunion fight. He was in the process of reattaching his severed hand and foot.
"Right back at you Jas. Did you really have to heal my arm so soon after twisting it to the back though? Your sadism is showing." Andrius complimented his friend as he dislocated his arm with a strangled grunt before setting it back properly. Jasper has a nasty fighting style when he fought seriously. With his talent granting greatly enhanced healing ability he would critically injure an opponent before quickly healing the wound wrong, such as dislocating joints and healing it rapidly to make them stuck in the wrong position and tearing up tendons and making them heal too quickly which would result in sudden movement tearing them up again.
Truly a heart-warming reunion between old friends who have not seen each other for so long.
Any more reminiscing and banter was interrupted with the arrival of both the royal guard captain and Jasper's apprentice. After Jasper finished healing himself, he faced the recent arrivals to greet them before gasping at the state of his apprentice.
"By the gods Felix!"
Jasper was no stranger to injury and pain, as he felt and inflicted both for most of his life. The gory executions and copious amount of bloodshed has made him used to it. It was magnified when he made the Outer Realm his home after abandoning the Theocracy, the vicious and uncaring environment making the usually kind man ignore his empathy and build a wall of apathy around his heart. But the state of his apprentice snapped him out of the usual apathy and worried him greatly.
Felix's broken form had drying blood and vomit, with small pieces of his internal organs and intestine that were mashed together in to become a gory soup together with the bile. The smell of vomit was covered up by the coppery scent of blood.
It truly was a miracle that Felix was still among the living.
The old traveller gestured for the Minotaur captain to lay his dying apprentice on a clean section of the destroyed throne room floor to begin healing. Jasper had to be careful with healing his apprentice too fast or risk waking the poor boy to experience agony. Some [Light Healing] spells were used to stabilize and repair the damage slowly.
[Heal]
With Felix stabilized Jasper proceeded with the main treatment and completely restored his young apprentice to full health. The powerful healing spell magnified with his unique talent healed the once doomed young adventurer and restored him like that nothing ever happened. The small panic building up in Jasper's heart died down as he saw his student's body healing normally, indicating that he did not perish from his wounds yet.
"I thought I made my orders clear captain. You were to hold back and observe the human boy's abilities. Why have you returned him in a near death state?" Asked the Minotaur king. Both he and Jasper have discussed in length about Felix's abilities that made Andrius curious about the boy that reinvigorated his friend's will to fight in the Outer Realm against the mewling gnats of the Theocracy from the realm of weakness. To see such a promising young warrior die due to the incompetence of those under his command made the usually composed king furious.
Suffice to say Brutus's answer will determine whether a new captain of the royal guard will be needed depending on the answer.
"The boy displayed abilities far beyond what was originally estimated and performed admirably. It would be an insult to his and my honour if I didn't use my full power to end the fight instead of dragging it out cruelly." Responded the stoic captain, uncaring of his king's dangerous ire.
Minotaur place great importance in upholding honour, not just their own but also worthy opponents. There is no greater insult for Minotaur than besmirching it, death would be preferable.
And in this fight, Brutus's honour demanded that he stopped withholding his full power and deal the killing blow to a worthy opponent regardless of any orders from his king.
King Andrius calmed down considerably after the explanation his stalwart captain gave. The ruler of Asterion had known Brutus for such a long time to understand his character. The captain does not give out compliments easy nor does he make light of maintaining the pride of Minotaurs. If he decided Felix was truly worthy of handling his might then who is he to chastise a Minotaur only doing the logical thing?
"Very well Brutus. While you went against my orders it was to save face and not insult yourself, our people and your opponent. However, a punishment will still be levied for you in the future after this mess is settled. Our human guests are powerful, but we must remember that these beings are not the same as us and require a gentler approach than you would with denizens in the realm of strength."
Settling grievances he had with captain Brutus, the mighty king walked towards his friend and the now healed Felix. The young adventurer in perfect health but still unconscious.
"Apologies for the harsh treatment that your apprentice received old friend. Restitution will be made, and I hope you can understand my captain's 'enthusiasm' in going all out against your protégé. On the bright side, your boy truly is magnificent based on Brutus's accounts."
The old traveller continued to watch over his unconscious student before accepting Andrius's apology. While his blood still boiled at the brutality his young student suffered, he also understood the ways of the Minotaur and why they would act in such a manner. The Outer Realm is no place for coddling no matter who you are, his only regret is not preparing his apprentice for such an extreme welcome if his potential was acknowledged by the Minotaurs.
"Water under the bridge Andy. I blame myself for not giving Felix a heads up on Minotaur honour and wanting to surprise him. But it does ease any worries I had for his future if you and your captain acknowledge his abilities."
"Thank you, old friend. Now perhaps a proper welcome should be prepared for my honoured guests. But since your student is still out of it, we can proceed with the feast later once he wakes up. I'm quite interested in getting to know the first student of the Bleeding Heart!"
Jasper had to resist the urge to cringe when hearing his old epithet from his time in the Black Scripture. It was quite a title that played with his name as well as his innate merciful nature that most of the Theocracy scoffed at. He acquiesced to the Minotaur king's wishes and gently lifted his student in his arms, following one palace servant assigned to show them their quarters in the palace. Many other human servants filled the room to clean up and repair the damages of the welcoming ceremony that the king likes to throw for his friend.
While he was fully healed of the injuries that he sustained during the short but brutal fight against the captain of the royal guard, Felix still felt some phantom pain of his internal organs turning to mush and spewing out of his orifices. He could still taste the bitter and coppery taste of blood and vomit in his mouth, the disgusting smell of the putrid liquids in his nose as well.
He looked around his surroundings and found that he was in a lavish room fit for big wig rich people like those snobs living in the arcologies. The furniture seemed a bit larger for humans and slowly Felix realized he was still in the nation of Minotaurs.
"So we're both still here!" Felix's growing clarity made him jump out of the bed. He remembered him and Jasper's easy entrance to one of the most powerful nations in the Outer Realm, a brief walk through the country that didn't fit the image of human enslaving monsters that he heard about and finally the battle he fought in that concluded with him almost becoming human mash.
Felix's sudden awakening also woke up Jasper who was dozing off in a chair near the bed. The old traveller looked a bit worn, probably from his battle against the Minotaur king but appeared to be in good health. Jasper stood up and walked towards where his apprentice was cautiously analysing the area in preparation for danger.
"Easy there lad. You shouldn't be moving around so suddenly after the hit you took earlier. But its good to see the fight in you didn't die." The old teacher looked very relieved to see his young student still possessing the will to fight despite the horrendous near-death experience.
The young adventurer looked at his teacher for a few minutes and asked what happened since the throne room showdown. He also took the chance to ask if his brush with death was part of the "plan" that Jasper concocted when wanting to enter the Minotaur nation.
"I can't apologize enough for the shit that happened yesterday lad. The Minotaur respect strength above all so I thought you showing your capabilities would impress them enough to make our journey into the Baharuth Empire territories would be easier once we had the full backing of Asterion. They wouldn't take my word on you and needed to see results, which also resulted in your suffering…"
Seeing his teacher going into depressed mode made Felix let bygones be bygones. "Alright, alright no waterworks please. Tears are for the dead and I'm still alive and kicking. But we talked about this old man, give a heads up when shit like yesterday could potentially happen."
After apologies and reassurances have been exchanged, the teacher and student duo proceeded to the banquet hall for dinner with the king and the captain. While Felix was glad to have some grub after expelling his previous meals with a few pints of his blood, he was a bit worried dining with the same Minotaur that almost killed him. But with Jasper around and the whole murderous misunderstanding cleared up, he would give the captain the benefit of the doubt…this time.
He isn't keen to meet death thrice, and he doubts he would get another freebie the third time around.
After walking for a few minutes from their suite of rooms provided by the king, Felix and Jasper arrived in the dining hall. It was just as large if not larger than the throne room, with a giant wooden table that looked to be carved in this room. The table had many dishes prepared and two Minotaurs tucking in heartily to the feast. There were no guards around that indicated the king either had enough trust in his guests to not do anything funny or was confident in his and his captain's ability to handle them if they got rowdy.
With the state of the throne room and the bitter defeat he suffered, he thinks the guards are just a decorative function like the banners and tapestries around the palace.
"Rise and shine sleepy head! Its good to finally meet Jasper's boy that he loved talking about." King Andrius greeted jovially. Nice to know the guy who could smack him around harder than Jasper is just as friendly. Captain Brutus nodded his head towards the new arrivals in silent greeting.
"Come, come! Eat and be welcome to my home. We have much to discuss, but in a more relaxed manner with the nonsense of this afternoon put behind us. I'm particularly interested in how my once dour old friend adopted a brat of his own and finally picked up his sword to stick it up the Theocracy's holy asses!"
Teacher and student looked at each other before slowly looking back to the Minotaur king. Jasper let out a tired sigh and slowly sat down. He filled his cup with some wine, took a large gulp of it before refilling it again.
"Well… it's a long story."
Jasper recounted the adventures he had in the years before meeting Felix. How he abandoned the Scriptures after years of service to atone for everything he did under their command and his own moral incompetence to see right from wrong to his regular trips into the Monarch's Tantrum becoming a chance encounter with his first student. It was quite a cheerful story if you ignore Felix's "unfortunate" circumstances before meeting his teacher that culminated in him becoming an arm short.
Felix also learned more about Jasper's time in the Outer Realm once the storytelling got to the topic of Andrius and Jasper's first fight, and how their friendship began.
It was in the early years of Jasper's self-imposed exile in the Outer Realm when the Minotaur king bit off more than he could chew against the beastmen encroaching in his territories. The mighty Minotaur monarch decided to head into the battle without his full war gear and bodyguards to eliminate the soldiers of the commonwealth and their golem squadrons.
Long story short, it didn't go as planned.
Close to the brink of death and surrounded by hostiles, Andrius was ready for his final stand when an old human rushed to his side. Wielding powerful divine magics, the human turned the tide of battle to Andrius's favour and both decimated the beastmen forces. From that day on Andrius and Jasper remained friends for many years in the old traveller's time in the Outer Realm, occasionally duking it from time to time. Apparently, their fight in the throne room was tame compared to their previous fights.
Then Felix questioned the king about the heavy topic of slavery in his kingdom. It was obviously preferable to being eaten but coming from his old world where modern day slavery involves grinding hours and little pay only to die for their corporate overlords the human enslavement thing rubbed him in the wrong way than human happy meals.
King Andrius proceeded to tell a more in-depth story of the Great Minotaur Sage who brought about social changes to his people as well as the overall treatment of humans. It was revealed that slavery in the term most familiar by inhabitants in the New World didn't really exist in Asterion.
The Minotaur monarch explained that the act of enslaving humans was just a temporary solution for their eventual freedom but then the main problems of maintaining their economic prosperity and the displaced humans who knew nothing but serving their Minotaur masters cropped up. The Minotaurs still needed the humans for the farming of crops and general upkeep of their cities as well as an efficient and effective workforce while humans are generally fragile and won't survive a day out in the Outer Realm. There was also the fact that humans in Asterion have a greater standard of living than even those in the Inner Realm. In the end the Minotaur Sage created a long-term plan to slowly phase out slavery for a more equal relationship that is best described as permanent employment.
The medieval description of human "slaves" in the nation of Minotaurs was just baseless rumours, partial information and propaganda by pro human countries like the Holy Roble Kingdom and Slane Theocracy. They didn't like humans being equal to everyone rather than superiors. It was a tedious mess of diplomatic shit that the Minotaurs eventually gave up on wasting breathe explaining and just let everyone think what they want.
It also didn't help that other demi-humans still practice eating humans and enslaving them the old fashion way instead of doing what the Minotaurs have been gradually. The Minotaurs were unfortunately lumped into the same category as the other demi-humans.
But that raises more questions about the general attitude of the Minotaurs who seemed hostile towards Felix and Jasper as they entered the kingdom. The misunderstanding was cleared up right away when Andrius explained how the border guards are always on edge against all outsiders no matter who they are, and the throwaway line on human slaves was just a prewritten instruction to discourage more humans from entering Asterion. Since any human in the Outer Realm are jumpy sans the religious fanatics hellbent on destroying all non-human races, a snarling threat is effective at scaring humans away.
The other demi-human tribes and monsters require a more direct warning, in the form of axes chopping off limbs and heads. Very effective.
Once the pleasantries and small talk were over, King Andrius decided to get down to business and ask Jasper's reason for the visit aside from introducing his student. While Jasper is always welcome in the Minotaur's nation, he generally lives in solitude and interacts very little with the locals in the Outer Realm. Even his messages and visits to Asterion were rare.
"I'll cut to the chase Andy. My apprentice and I flipped off the Theocracy and wiped out the Sunlight Scripture operating in the Outer Realm. To throw them off and give my student a tour of the Inner Realm, we need to pass through Asterion and enter the Baharuth Empire." Jasper explained to his Minotaur friend, casually talking about the elimination of one of the world's mightiest military orders like it was a boy scout troop that disbanded.
"That explains the news we got from the Inner Realm and the Theocracy suddenly scrambling back on any more operations out here. But I think you got your numbers wrong, old friend. The Sunlight Scripture no longer exists, what squads you ran into and eliminated here were the final remnants of those zealots." Andrius told the news he heard about the political landscape of the Inner Realm about a powerful sorcerer by the name of Ainz Ooal Gown wiping out the Sunlight Scripture at a village called Carne. A gobsmacked Jasper continued to listen to the story, who didn't know if he should celebrate the destruction of the despicable religious order or wary that an unknown entity easily wiped them out in just a day when it took him and his student months.
Snapping out of his stupor, Jasper asked how the Minotaur king learned of this. While the nation of Asterion possess much influence and resources, that could only be applied in the Outer Realm. Whatever news that the Minotaurs can get from the Inner Realm would be outdated and from multiple sources with conflicting news.
"It's thanks to our better relations with the Baharuth Empire. Their new emperor is much more agreeable to diplomatic relations and discussions as well as trade with any friendly non-human nations. In fact, some of our appliances have made their way to Arwintar's markets. Despite being called the 'Bloody Emperor' he sure is cooperative and level-headed. In exchange for more of our goods he gives us up to date information as well as a surplus of food and raw material like timber and ore."
Despite never meeting emperor Jircniv and only interacting with the new emperor through letters and messengers, Andrius seemed to view the human ruler in a positive light compared to his vitriol for the Inner Realm and it's myriad of xenophobic nations.
"I guess I can pull a few strings to help smuggle you in the Inner Realm by calling some favours with the Baharuth emperor. Despite being new he must have been in contact with the Theocracy already and might be under their influence somewhat. But you're going to have to lay low and not cause too much trouble and attract the Theocracy's eyes on you once you enter the Inner Realm. Despite pulling back their forces and minimalizing contact with other nations since the Sunlight Scripture's destruction, those zealots still have eyes and ears everywhere in the Inner Realm."
Jasper raised his cup of wine to toast his friend's generosity and drank it in one go. Who knew the old man was a wine lover, drinking several more cups of the alcoholic beverage without losing his mental faculties.
"I think its time we also bring up the unfortunate end to your student and my captain's fight. Even though honour was on the line, it was still inexcusable for such horrendous injury to be inflicted to your student. So, I had a talk with captain Brutus to make up for such a blunder and I hope you and your student will accept it."
"That's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me since ever. I wonder what the consolation prize would be for me almost dying?" Felix thought, curious to see what sort of punishment the captain of the royal guard would receive and his payment of his almost killing the young adventurer.
Brutus stood up from his chair and bowed his head to Felix and began speaking. "While I have no regrets in using my full capabilities, I regret that it caused you so much agony and almost cut your life short. I wish to repay you by overseeing your training with my own experience during your stay here, with permission from Lord Jasper of course." The captain of the royal guard stated his piece, ignorant of the growing horror on Felix's face.
"W-w-what?! He wants to repay kicking my ass by doing it more for the foreseeable future of us being here?!... no, no, no its okay! Everything will be fine. I'm sure Jasper won't agree to me getting the mashed potato treatment again after seeing what happened. Everything is going to be alright, he is going to bring some common sense to this mes -"
"Of course! Felix would be honoured to taught by one of the greatest warriors in the world. While I thought him everything there is to know about magic and the world, he still needs a specialized teacher when it comes to being a warrior. I can swing a sword alright, but captain Brutus can take his swordplay to new heights. Isn't this great Felix?" said the denser than lead old traveller.
" !?"
The young adventurer couldn't utter a single word, the terror freezing his mind and body. He had a wide-eyed look and an open mouth as the only expression that could be formed. Unfortunately, everyone in the room mistook it as a face of shocked happiness and celebrated.
"HA HA the boy is so happy he can't speak another word. Captain Brutus, I hereby temporarily relieve you of your duties to focus on training the young Felix in the ways of battle. Teach him as you would the most enthusiastic young Minotaur and part your considerable knowledge in the arts of battle to the lad!" King Andrius heartily and obliviously congratulated the new development.
"Yes, your majesty! I will use all my efforts to mould this boy into an unstoppable and peerless warrior. By the end of the training, you won't even recognize him anymore!" the captain roared in agreement, eager to train his human student in the art of Minotaur combat.
Felix couldn't recall what happened that night after the announcement. He downed an entire jug of wine after snapping out of his shocked stupor, which was once again misinterpreted by everyone as him celebrating.
Author's note:
Hello dear readers, its Finn here with an author's note. Once again, I have to thank you beautiful people for giving this story a chance and continued reading to this point. I'm trying my best to improve my writing, so I apologize for keeping everyone waiting. Writer's block sucks.
Anyway, I just wanted to clear up some misunderstandings and errors in the story due to my own ignorance on the matter. The first thing I would like to touch upon is the character sheets, specifically the stats such as HP and MP.
I'm going to hold off making base stats points until max level since I suck at calculating them properly. The points make the fights seem predictable and honestly it isn't easy to translate game mechanics to the real-life world that our protagonist finds himself in.
Next order of business is Felix's classes and build. To clear up the confusion and contradicting natures of his kit, he is a hybrid type player that has the ability of both warrior and magic caster since he can cast tier spells and wield a sword.
Obviously, in-game he would most definitely suck as hybrid builds will fall behind specialized builds like Touch Me (Warrior) and Ulbert (Magic Caster). But this mixed build gives Felix adaptability, something paramount to survival in the world he finds himself in. At best he would be ranked as a mid-low tier player if he was still in YGGDRASIL, far below Momonga who despite having an RPG focused build is superior since he specializes as a magic caster.
On his ability to cast Tier Magic, I neglected to list out which classes that allowed him to use magic in the first place. His Fighter class gave him the ability to use magic and the Apprentice class further developed both his warrior and magic caster aspects. But the most important job class Felix has that attributed to his continued development is the Survivor class.
Survivor is a High class (Max out at 10 levels) that is a jack of all trades class allowing anyone to have and benefit from it. It was formed from Felix's desire to continue living and fighting on, helping him grow stronger regardless of if he was victorious in his battles or suffered a horrible defeat. Aside from granting Felix abnormal development, it also helps him bridge the gap of levels for tier magic and allows him to use one tier above his current tier magic ability.
I thought about making it a rare job class but decided against it since I wanted to save rare classes for future chapters and made it High class instead.
While the Survivor class is quite powerful in the New World, it would be regarded as decent at best in YGGDRASIL. Because levelling up in the game is easy and you wouldn't have much use for getting every spell available to other classes when you could power up with a proper build with better classes.
Honestly, I regretted not making Felix a pure magic caster since I personally love magic using characters, but I also like characters that use swords. I'm going to amend that by properly building Felix up to have more magic oriented job classes while balancing it with his swordsmanship.
Guess that's everything I wanted to touch upon. Sorry for the long wait and confusion, but I just got confused trying to balance out the rules of 3 worlds (Real world, YGGDRASIL and New World) since the mechanics of YGGDRASIL drastically changed how players and other stuff from the game work in the New World. Case in point Momonga's RPG build becoming extremely powerful in the New World rather than being average based on the rules of YGGDRASIL.
Hope I can push out the next chapter sooner. Goodbye for now!
