The first night was the hardest. The bed wasn't quite right. The sheets weren't the same soft fabric as the ones at home. Hannah hadn't thought to bring her own sheets. She was starting to realize she hasn't thought to bring a lot of things.

The dorm was quiet, too quiet for Hannah's taste. She was used to noise, the sound of owls hooting in the attic, the sound of her dad snoring in the other room. This was just...it just wasn't right. She slipped out of the bed, sliding her feet into the fuzzy house shoes she had remembered to bring.

Maybe she could write home and ask her mum to send her bedroom, the whole thing, mattress included. She knew it was silly and she should really try to sleep, but how could she sleep when the blankets weren't soft enough and the air was too quiet. She grabbed her quill and started writing. A small sound made her pause. Snoring, someone was snoring quite loudly. Hannah blinked. It wasn't the same but it was similar enough that she felt a small heartache of homesickness.

"Can't sleep either?" a voice asked. Hannah nodded, looking over at the speaker. The girl was wearing a pale pink dressing gown and holding a stuffed lobster in her arms. Hannah vaguely remembered her from the sorting, Susan something?

"No, the sheets aren't soft enough. You?"

"Mister Lobby doesn't like new places. He thinks it's too dark."

"And it was too quiet too, until," Hannah nodded to the bed where the snoring was coming from. Susan laughed.

"Sounds like my auntie, only she'll claim she doesn't snore."

"Papa says the same," Hannah laughed. "Um, I'm Hannah, I don't know if you paid attention during the sorting."

"Susan, and even if I did, I'm horrible with names. I've brought a blanket from home, it's a bit softer than the sheets, it's on my bed if you want to share?" Susan offered. Hannah nodded, rising to her feet.

"I've got a glowing rock Mum bought me from a muggle shop. I don't know how it glows, but maybe Mister Lobby will think it's enough?"

"Maybe," Susan agreed. Hannah grabbed the glow in the dark rock and brought it to Susan's bed. Susan scooted over and Hannah climbed in. Susan's blanket was soft enough. Hannah felt an immediate feeling of relief.

"It's bright enough," Susan said, curling against Hannah. Soon both of them were sound asleep, both lulled by the very loud snoring of their housemate.
