"He should have asked me," Daphne muttered, flattening the imaginary wrinkles out of her sea foam green dress.
"Who?" Blaise asked.
"Theo. He should have asked me to the dance, but he asked my sister, my little sister. Everyone loves beautiful little Astoria, loves how she's so pale and demure, how she just smiles at you. Everyone loves her."
"I don't," Blaise stated. "I mean, I can't hate her because she is your sister and if I said I hated her, you'd probably kill me."
"True. The only one allowed to hate her is me, she is my sister," Daphne replied, taking a drink from her crystal glass. "He still should have asked me."
"Why? You fancy him?"
"No! Maybe a little, I mean, he is attractive, from a good family name, pretty sure his name on the short list of potential marriage partners for Astoria and me."
"What about me?" Blaise asked, straightening his lilac tie. Daphne raised an eyebrow at him.
"You?" she laughed. "Your name is nowhere near those lists! First off, there's the tiny matter of no one knows exactly who your father is."
"True, even Mum doesn't know for sure. She thinks it was Blayne Knightingly, but then he died and she was with Kimbo Grikger within the month..."
"Both are pure-blood, but who wants to take that chance?" Daphne asked. "There's also the tiny fact a lot of people seem to die, or disappear, around your mother."
"Pretty sure she killed them, but there's no proof and who am I to say anything, I saw nothing," Blaise said, shrugging. "So, now that we both know our places in the perfect little pure-blood society, would you care to dance? Theo's too busy dancing with your sister, and besides, you wouldn't be interested in him."
"Why not?" Daphne asked, allowing Blaise to take her and and lead her out onto the dance floor.
"He fancies blokes, mostly Harry Potter, but still."
"Oh, how interesting," Daphne laughed. "Astoria always did know how to pick them," she added, giving Blaise a smile.
"How about we forget about this stupid ball, sneak out of here, and enjoy each other's company in a way that'll scandalize anyone who finds out?" she suggested. Blaise nodded, allowing Daphne to lead him off the dance floor and out into the main hallway, knowing one night of fun might be all he got, but who was he to object to the object of his affection?
