Season 1 Episode 8 Part two
"So that's it?" Murphy asked as the group sat down either on the floor or table "We're all just gonna lay down and die?... Doc" he shouted nudging at Docs leg when he saw him stating to fall asleep were he was leaning against a desk
"Knock it off Murphy" Warren grumbled but it was slightly muffled due to her leaning on her crossed arms on the desk
"Three days without water, man" Doc said "The human body hits the wall"
"There must be thousands of them" Cassandra sighed
"Millions" The new guy said who's name they learned was Otis"They're migrating"
"Migrating to where?" Warren asked
"South for the winter"
"Z's don't like the cold" 10k mumbled but it was also muffled as he was lying on his stomach on the floor
"Kids got it.. we had a place up in North Dakota near fort Yates, quiet little place right on the river. Couple dozens of us having a go. I mean zombie bison every once in a while but that was as bad as it got. Then the rumbling started and never stopped"
"Well where'd they come from?" Murphy asked
"Refugee camp up in Alberta. Over a million people. No food. No water. It got ugly. They all turned in a week"
"We shoulda kept running" Murphy grumbled
"And go where?" Ellie mumbled sat on the edge of the desk "We're all dehydrated, we would of all just collapsed on the street at some point"
"You couldn't get around them?" Warren asked Otis
"This herd is miles wide" The guy said shaking his head "I mean its got a mind of it's own. You can't move fast enough to get around it. And every single thing it overrun just adds to its crowd. You know fast zombies, healthy zombies, like the ones that just got my friend, Buck" Otis said taking a swig out of his flask which made all the group sit up, eyes wide looking at his flask.
"Hey man, you gonna share that with the class?" Doc asked
"It ain't water" The man said
"Pass it around, what ever it is" Warren said
"Go easy on it" He said to Doc as he passed it to him "Home-made hooch ain't for everyone"
Once Doc had it he took a whiff and then put some in his mouth, his eyebrows raised and he poured some more in.
"Easy man, Come on. Its got to last me"
"Yeah Doc, Don't hog it" Ellie said nudging him with her foot
Doc stopped drinking it when she said that, and after smacking his lips together he said "Anti freeze and …."
"Castor oil" Otis said finishing his sentence and Doc nodded and was about to pass it to Ellie when they all jumped when they heard a loud bang. "We've got to he out of here" he said standing up and looking toward the door where the zombies were trying their hardest to get in.
"He's right" Murphy said
"Okay, this room isn't secure" Warren said standing up and picking up her knife "We've got to find some place more secure... What's back there?" She asked Murphy who had opened another door in the room
"Morgue"
"Lets go" she said running past Murphy and through the door
"You heard the lady lets go" Murphy shouted when no one else moved.
"Yeah yeah all right" Doc grumbled as they all climbed to their feet and made their way trough the door to the morgue.
"Nuh-uh, no way" The guy said nervously when he saw the draws where the bodies were stored "This place is a death trap" Then they all heard glass smash and they knew the zombies had got in and was heading for them so Murphy quickly shut the door. It didn't take long for the zombies to get their door that Murphy was pushing against and they could see him moving with the door as the zombies tried to break it down.
"I wonder where they're all going?" Murphy mumbled more to himself as he walked to the window to look at the zombies walking past.
"No where" The guy said "They're zombies"
"Be glad they don't have a leader" Murphy said back and Ellie frowned at him slightly wondering why he would say that. She knew the zombies weren't interested in him and didn't want to eat him like they did the rest of us. But he wasn't able to able to control them was he?. "What now?" Murphy asked Warren knocking Ellie out of her train of thought.
"We wait them out"
"We can't just stay here and wait to die" Murphy companied
"We're not waiting to die. Where do you expect us to go Murphy? We basically ran into a dead end. They may not be interested in you but we don't have that luxury so we wait them out and hopefully they will move on". Ellie said leaning her head back against the table Doc was on.
They were all quiet for a little while except for the pounding of the door and snarling when they suddenly heard a new noise. They could all hear scratching coming from behind Cassandra and 10k who were sat resting against the draws
"Do you hear that or is it that just in my head?" 10k whispered
"Not in your head ten, I think we can all hear that" Ellie reassured him
"I hope it's rats" Cassandra said
"I think its coming from in here" 10k said slowly standing up onto his knees to face the draws along with the rest of them
"Aww damn" Doc moaned standing up off the examination table he was lying on "Hows a guy supposed to relax with all that going on?... Ill open it, you pike it" He said to 10k as he grabbed the handle on one of the door"
"Don't open that drawer. Just leave it alone" Otis complained holding his gun tightly
"Calm down" Cassandra said rolling her eyes and Doc lifted up his knife as did 10k and he got onto his feet
"One, two, three" Doc said counting down with his hands before pulling it open and 10k got ready to attack but the draw was empty and the scratching continued
"I thing it's coming from this one" 10k said pointing to one of the draws closest to him.
So Doc grabbed the handle and 10k lifted up his knife again. Just as Doc pulled the handle the zombie charged forward pushing the door fully open and went for Doc. 10K struggled to get the zombie of off Doc and Doc couldn't shake it off either. When suddenly blood splattered over both him and 10k and the zombie went limp and piercing the zombies head was an arrow. Turning around they saw Ellie holing her cross bow in her arms and Doc nodded at her in thanks and she sent him a smile.
"You ok?" Warren asked them gun in hand, she was getting ready to shoot it when Ellie beat her to it.
"Yeah" Doc said breathing heavily as he pulled the arrow out of the zombies skull and pushed it back into the draw and closed the door. "Feel free to help out next time Murphy" Doc said holding his arrow out to Ellie who took it and wiped it across her jeans before placing it back into the cross bow.
"You got an ear in your hair" 10k said to Cassandra who just said "What's new" before pulling it out of her hair with a look of disgust.
Before they were all distracted by the pounding of the zombies trying to get into the room getting louder.
"They're coming in?" The Otis panicked pointing his gun at the door as it rattled with the pressure of the zombies on it.
"Settle down" Warren said to him grabbing his arm and he put his gun down. She then walked over to the draws and opened the door and gestured for 10k to pull out the metal drawer which he did and they all knew then what she was implying.
"I don't know" Cassandra said quietly looking terrified
"We don't have much choice"
"No way in hell I am getting in that thing" The guy said
"Look I don't feel very comfortable doing it either but if you want to live, then I suggest you do" Ellie said and they all looked at each for a few seconds before coming to the conclusion that they had no choice like Warren said
"Well this is gonna be fun" Doc said as the growling got louder and Cassandra was the unfortunate one to go first as she was one of the shortest and she would have had issued getting in the other ones.
"I don't want to die in here" She said as she climbed on the draw
"Well you ain't gonna live out here" Doc said doing nothing to ease her fears and Ellie knew there was nothing she could say that would help as even she didn't know if they would survive this.
"I know" Cassandra said lying down on her back so 10k and Warren could push her in and then they shut the door
Once Cassandra was in they searched another drawer making sure it was empty.
"After you kid, Age before beauty" Doc said to 10k when they found an empty one and he sighed before picking up his gun and climbed in and Warren shut the door after him.
"Ok one of you goes next" Warren said to the others when they found another empty drawer
"Rock, paper, scissors?" Doc said
"What are you nine?" Otis with an eye roll and Doc sighed
"Fine I'll take it" He said climbing into the drawer and Warren shut it behind him
"You better hurry up" Murphy shouted from over by the door
"Alright We'll take the next one" Warren said to Otis when she opened up another draw but he shook his head
"I'm no good in tight spaces"He complained
"Get in" And the guy hesitated before climbing in
"Warren not to point out the obvious here, but just noticed there's not enough space for all of us" Ellie said just as Warren was about to shut the door.
"Take mine!" The guy said from is draw as he tried to get back out but Warren blocked his way
"Stay there!"
"I mean you and I could share but what happens if this guy panics and attracts all the z's to us, maybe it would make sense if we shared and then I could try and talk him down if I have to?" Ellie said
"Ok, you sure your alright sharing with a total stranger?"
"Yeah, ill be fine. You know I can take care of myself"
"Don't I know it. Ok get in"
"Ok dude scoot over" She said to Otis and he moved as far as he could allowing Ellie to climb in next to him and Warren shut the door. Sealing them in darkness.
Warren's Pov
"Warren, you better hurry" Murphy said listening through the door
"I am" She said lifting up her gun and opening up the door and she was greeted with a zombie already in there. "Oh damn now what?" She said as she closed the door again, looking towards Murphy she saw him looking around before spotting something on the floor and once he had picked it up she realised what it was. A body bag. Which he placed on the table.
"Come on"
"Okay. Okay" Warren whispered not bothering to hide how scared she was and she climbed into te body bag and Murphy started doing it up. "Don't you leave us" Warren begged him seeing te look in his eyes
"Shh. Just stay real still" Murphy said back to her as he continued to zip up the body bag
"Murphy"
"Shh"
"Don't you leave"
"Don't move" he said zipping it up to her face but she grabbed his hand stopping him
"I got to get you to California"
"You got me as far as you could"
"Murphy please" But she was ignored and Murphy pulled the zip up across her face only leaving a little gap so she could see. And she could see him walk to stand by her head when the pounding stopped and the door broke and loads of growling zombies piled in not paying any notice to Murphy, who just stood there for a few seconds before turning to look at the others in the drawers and then walking presumably out the door but Warren couldn't see him and she couldn't stop him either or the zombies would have got her.
Murphy's Pov
I kinda felt bad for leaving them, some more than the others. Warren he had come to respect and actually like and Doc had become like a friend to him. Ellie he didn't know why, but he felt an overwhelming urge to protect her. She had always tried to help him, sure she hit him and shouted at him but only when he was being stupid. But she always tried to make sure he was ok. The other two he didn't really care about., but in the end they all just see as an means to an end. He was the cure nothing else, so that's why he was currently walking down a street fall of z's who he still didn't know why they wont attack him. Most just walked past him others however sorta just stared.
"What" He said to two zombies who had just stopped and were staring at him like they didn't know what to do. "You don't want to eat me, What do you want?... Great, "I'm the one eyed king in the land of the blind" he said when he was distracted by a light shining on his face and looking for the source he found someone signalling him in the window. Some one else was alive.
He quickly made his way to the building where there was a zombie waiting outside, he tried to work past it but the z followed. So he feigned right and when the z followed he quickly dodged left and went through the door and up the stairs and down a long corridor until he came to a woman and young girl sat on a mattress in one of the rooms.
"That not daddy" The little girl whispered to his mum and Murphy walked towards them slowly not wanting to scare them.
Ellie's Pov
They could all hear the zombies walking around growling outside. But what Ellie could also hear was the guys heavy breathing next to her.
"You are gonna hyperventilate, you need to calm down" Ellie said to him turning to lie on her side so she could see his face
"Calm down! How can I calm down! There's tones of zombies outside!"
"Yes and they cant get in, so you having a panic attack is not gonna help anyone. So try to take a breath. Face me" She said to him when she could still hear his heavy breathing and he did. "Hold your breath"
"Wha-"
"Just do it, look ill do it with you" He held his breath and she did too, she waited for a few seconds before releasing a breath which he copied and then she repeated the process. And just when she thought it worked he started banging on the door with his gun.
"Hey stop" she whispered trying to grab his hand but he shoved her off
"Get out of here!"He shouted "Go away"
"Try to breath man. Just breath" She heard Doc say
"There's no air in here. I got to get out of the darkness. I cant take it... If we all go at once, we can over power them"
"No you do that then we all die" Ellie hissed grabbing his hand
"No. No, man. No ones going" Doc said agreeing with Ellie "Chill man. Chill"
"One" Otis said ignoring them both and Ellie tightened her grip on his arm "Two"
"Otis, be cool man. Be cool" Doc said but it didn't help
" Three" He said cocking his gun and he wretched his hand out of Ellie making her gasp as the harsh movement hurt her side.
Ellie tried grabbing him again but she was too late and he opened the door so she quickly managed to turn herself around even when her body protested and backed away when Otis was soon surrounded by zombies who wasted no time and quickly stated munching on him making him scream out in pure agony, blood squirting every where. It broke Ellie's heart but she knew there was nothing to could do and knowing she would be next if she didn't do something, she quickly pushed at his feet to get him out of the door and the zombies followed the body as he landed on the floor and she grabbed the door pulling it closed just as the zombies noticed her and luckily enough the zombies weight was enough to seal the door shut.
"Ellie you ok?!" She heard Doc shout and she let out a sigh of relief as she led back on the draw.
"Yeah I'm alright" She said breathlessly trying to get her raising heart to calm down that was too close for comfort
Murphy's Pov
"Please help us" The woman begged Murphy.
Making his decision he stepped towards them as the woman lifted up her knife, but Murphy just quickly grabbed the bag near the end of the mattress and started filling it up with some food and supplies he found on the table. From the corner of his eye he saw the woman start to stand up, so he stopped what he was doing, turned slightly and growled at her lowly while shaking his head.
"What are you?" She asked quietly but Murphy ignored her and turned around to walk back out of the room "leave some water for my girl... if you see a man, red jacket... tell him we're still alive at least do that" She shouted after him as Murphy carried on walking.
Murphy made his way back downstairs and saw the zombie he had dodged earlier who also happened to be wearing a red jacket and Murphy knew this was the man they were talking about. " hey" He said to the zombie making him turn around and Murphy opened up the door for him to go up. Sealing the mum and little girls fate.
Murphy made his way through the now mostly deserted town thankfully the heard had moved on. But just has he passed the morgue he stopped, Realising he was better off with a group for now Murphy went back and just in time. As he got back to where the morgue was he saw a big zombie standing over Warren and walking towards the z Murphy stared at him and the zombie cowered before walking past him and out the door. It appears Murphy did have some control over them. He then proceeded to to undo the body bag Warren was in.
"They're gone?" She said to him
"Yeah"
"You came back?" She said relieved a smile going across her face
"I did" He said and then held up a big bottle of water for Warren to see and her eyes lit up
"Where'd you get that?"
"Took it... from a dead family" She didn't need to know where he really got it from and he wasn't lying not really, they were gonna die.
"Oh" she said sitting up and Murphy opened the bottle and gave it to Warren who took a mouthful "Ooh yeah" She said enjoying the taste and she took another sip before giving it back to Murphy. She then climbed out and with Murphys help they got the others out and they all knelt around the table grateful for the food and water.
"Murphy, how did you do this?" Doc asked him "No I don't even want to know... I take back everything 10k said about you" and 10k pulled a face
"Well, you know I thought the got Warren already and then I though Ellie was a gonna when Otis panicked no offence, but you were almost dead" and they both just nodded "But Murphy man you are unreal, where'd they all go? How many did you kill? Are we gonna go outside and see them piled like ten deep on the side walk? Down low down low down low there you go"
"Ten take a breath" Ellie said with a smile on her face and they all smiled
"What?"
"That is the most words I ever heard come out of your sound hole kid" Doc said and they all laughed.
"What happened with Otis?" Murphy asked
"Oh not a lot he just panicked thought he could take on a load of z's and obviously he couldn't and the zombies got him. But I managed to knock him out while the z's were distracted with him and close the door slightly and when one of the z's saw me and ran to me their weight closed my door properly.
"You are like a magnet for trouble aren't you?" Murphy joked
"No that would be you again" Ellie joked back
"But in all seriousness I'm glad your ok"
"Thanks" Ellie said quietly surprised he said that
"I'm glad your all ok" He said and they all smiled
"This use to be my favourite" Cassandra said "Where the hell did you find goldfish"
"I'm a goldfish magnet" Murphy joked "I didn't know they were your favourite though" He said laughing and Cassandra chucked some food at him making the rest of them laugh.
"I like a juicy rib eye with a loaded baked potato" Doc said "Can you psycho food radar find that?"
"Yeah Doc, you're one greedy bastard, you know that?"
"To Murphy" Warren said picking up her glass of water"You may be the mission, but today you became our friend. Thank you"
"Here. Here" Doc said and they all picked up something to toast with
"Cheers" Cassandra said
"Thank you" Ellie said
"Okay okay" Murphy said "I only did it to stop Doc's constance whining"
"That is totally fair" Doc said "Is this beef jerky"
"Your not taking the whole bag are you?" Ellie said
"So um can we go now?" Murphy said sounding panicked "I need to go, so I need you to go... I need to go" He said standing up and walking out the door finally realising what he did to that poor family. He was changing and it was scaring him.
"Probably overwhelmed" Ellie said standing up and grabbing the bag to put the food and water in " We all know that vaccine is doing something to him, the z's are evident to that"
"As long as he doesn't go zombie on us" Doc said
"I think if that was gonna happen he would have turned all ready, lets just focus on getting him to California where he can get help" Warren said grabbing her gun
"Amen to that" Doc said finishing off his drink before grabbing his weapon.
"Come on lets go find Murphy" Warren said walking out the door and they all followed suit. They were all a little happier now that they had some food and water and hopefully the rest of the journey would be an easier one.
