Now: Sasha returns home to comfort Obi-Wan
Chapter 1- Obi-Wan's Heart
The silent hum of the engines was all that was heard in the ship. Obi-Wan sat in the pilot's chair of the ship he had just borrowed from Bo-Kataan and the Death Watch while escaping from Mandalore. He was staring out at the swirls, barely paying attention to their existence before him. His mind and body were numb to his surroundings. Everything happened so fast after Bo showed up to save him. He barely processed the fact that the sister Satine had mentioned to him aboard the Twilight would turn out to be the female Death Watch member who was the right hand to Vizsla. He still wondered how someone with Satine's viewpoints could have a sister who worked for someone that wanted to over throw her. It almost didn't register in his mind as a possibility, but it is and was one. But the one thing that was still processing was Satine and her death at the hands of Darth Maul.
The incident still played too fresh into his mind as he stared off before him. He slammed his eyes shut, hoping it would erase the image. But it didn't disappear. It still plagued him behind closed eyes. Seeing the look in her eyes as she struggled under Maul's force grip on her throat. The gasp that left her lips as she was stabbed by the dark saber. Her final words to him that continually ring through his ears and his heart. And the pure rage he felt for Maul and every other being in that room who was responsible for her death.
Obi-Wan was never one to brush with the dark side. He had felt it when he had first faced Maul on Naboo after Maul had mortally wounded Qui-Gon Jinn, his former Master. But it had quickly disappeared once he had cleaved Maul in half, thought him to be dead, and rushed to his dying Master's side. He had also felt the dark side on Zigoola when that dreadful Sith holocron plagued his mind with dreams, memories, hallucinations, and that annoying voice that demanded his death. Die Jedi, Die Jedi, Die Jedi, Die… But this time his brush with the dark side was different. When Qui-Gon died, it was purely a sudden burst of anger and power that only lasted the remainder of the fight. He had quickly rid of the dark and clung to the light for a long time after that. And on Zigoola, he was trapped in the dark with no way out as its prisoner until they left the planet. But this… No, this was what defined the dark side. Defined the Sith.
Obi-Wan had wanted to kill Maul, the Mandalorian Commandos, Almec, and anyone who got in his way of revenge. That was far from the Jedi way! That was what Master Yoda had always warned them about. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. Beware the dark side. He was so afraid for Satine's life that he rushed to Mandalore against orders and tried to save her. He became angry with himself for being captured and angry when he saw Maul was responsible. He grew with hatred as he held Satine's dying form in his arms for the monster that just took another person he loved and cared for away. However, he never reached the next step. He didn't follow through with those thoughts. He didn't kill anyone or get revenge for her. He stopped himself when he realized that this was exactly what Maul wanted him to do, fall to the dark side. He did still suffer…
This kind of pain and suffering that Obi-Wan was feeling in his heart, in his soul, and in his mind was what he thought he could protect Sasha from on Stew-Jon when he learned about her relationship to Cayden Marshall. Attachments are forbidden to the Jedi. They are allowed to experience intimate and private moments with others, but they were never allowed to fall in love, to become attached to anyone. But just like his own padawan, Obi-Wan had become attached to Satine. He loved her with his whole being. He even proposed to her in secret to prove how much she meant to him. It shouldn't be wrong to love someone. He loved Qui-Gon like a father. He loves Anakin like a brother. He loves Sasha like a little sister and maybe even his own daughter from time to time. And he loved Satine as she was his everything. But now she was gone. And he was lost. And tucked away in his belt was the engagement ring he had given her when he proposed and that she had given back as she died. She had handed it off to him as he held her in his arms and he had placed it in his belt before he could lose it as he was being dragged away. It was one of the last things he had to remember her by.
With a heavy and pained sigh, due to his broken ribs, Obi-Wan let his throbbing head fall back and rest against the head rest of the chair. He opened his eyes and stared up at the ceiling of the cockpit. Thinking about Anakin and Sasha made him think about how they would react when he would return. Anakin would be upset that he destroyed the Twilight, but glad to see Obi-Wan okay. Sasha… she would be heartbroken to hear of Satine's passing, because just like Obi-Wan, Sasha loved Satine too. They had been like sisters since the first time they met each other. He dreaded the thought of telling her, but he knew that if he didn't tell her the Holonet would or someone in the temple would. And she would be furious that he kept this from her. No, she didn't deserve that. Sasha was to find out from him the moment she returned.
Speaking of returning, the ship beeped at him to tell him that he had arrived. Obi-Wan leaned forward with a groan and pulled the ship from hyperspace. His aching body was still yelling at him even though he still felt numb to everything. His throbbing head from a very likely head concussion rung with every waking movement he made. His broken ribs screamed every time he tried to adjust himself in the Mandalorian armor he still wore or when he would just merely breathe. The smoke that still lingered his lungs didn't help that either. And he could feel so many bruises, a couple of burns, and a few cuts stinging. But none of that stopped him from bring the ship down with the upmost ease toward the temple as the landing platform extended out from the temple hanger bay.
Landing the ship, Obi-Wan glanced up to see Anakin standing there, waiting for him. Taking a deep and steadying breath, Obi-Wan pulled himself from the chair as soon as the ship had landed. He then shuffled toward the ramp at a sluggish speed. Stopping at the top of the now open ramp, Obi-Wan felt his breathing waver. He couldn't do it. He couldn't face Anakin or the Temple or the Jedi Order. He just kept thinking about everything he had done or wanted to do, and everything he had seen. And the idea of leaving the privacy of the ship made him ill. Closing his hands into fists, Obi-Wan steadied himself and made a couple goals for himself. Get inside, avoid talking as much as possible, and go be alone. And as soon as he stepped down that ramp towards his best friend and brother, Obi-Wan did exactly that.
Anakin stood there with a worried expression plastered all over his face as he stared up at the Death Watch vessel that Obi-Wan was moving down at a slow pace. He wondered where the Twilight was, but just merely looking at his old Master told him that his bucket of a ship was not his number one priority at this time. Anakin could tell the moment he looked at the man that he was in pain. The way he carried himself spoke volumes to the injuries he must have. But Anakin could not get a grip on what Obi-Wan was feeling emotionally or mentally. He was completely blocked out from his mind and their bond. That worried Anakin more.
"Hey, Master," Anakin greeted with a small smile. "How did… how did it go?"
Obi-Wan slowed to a halt in front of him, his gaze was to the ground and his eyes were hazed over.
"It… it went fine," Obi-Wan said, his hoarse voice barely above a whisper.
Anakin could tell he was lying. Since the beginning of the war, Obi-Wan had become so much more open with Anakin. This made Anakin's stomach turn.
"Where's Satine?" Anakin asked carefully. "Is she okay?"
"She's gone." Was all he said.
Anakin's breath caught in his throat. He knew Obi-Wan had headed to Mandalore to help Satine. Padme had told him of her situation and he had rushed back to provide aid to Obi-Wan which he turned down, except for the ship. That's why Anakin gave him the Twilight. But hearing she was dead?! That shook Anakin to his core. He had a million questions racing through his mind. One of them was, did Padme know? Probably not, but Anakin knew he needed to see her as soon as possible to be the one to break the news to her. Not the holonet.
"How is that possible? What happened on Mandalore?" Anakin rambled as Obi-Wan began moving again towards the entrance to the temple. Anakin followed after him and soon reached his side.
"I don't want to talk about it right now, Anakin," Obi-Wan said with a twinge of sorrow attached to it. "I'd like to be alone."
Anakin skidded to a stop, his jaw slack. He had never seen Obi-Wan like this. Not since Qui-Gon Jinn's death and even then Obi-Wan at least seemed normal until he was behind closed doors. Anakin could still remember hearing his late night sobbing and his nightmares that kept him up from Anakin's chamber. Pouting, Anakin hustled to keep up with Obi-Wan. He asked more questions to Obi-Wan as they went along. He asked about the Twilight, discovered it was destroyed. He asked his injuries, he said he was fine. He asked about the armor, he didn't get a response. It was irritating him that Obi-Wan was keeping him at such a distance. It reminded him of when he was a young padawan again. He was just trying to help was all. Soon they ran into Master Yoda and Master Windu. They walked with them through the corridors. Anakin had hoped to be alone with him more, but it was inevitable that they would run into someone from the council at some point.
"Master Kenobi," Mace breathed in shock. "What the hell are you wearing? Where have you been?"
"Went to Mandalore, you did," Master Yoda assumed when Obi-Wan didn't respond. It was also obvious based off the armor. "Against our orders that was."
"I'm sorry, Masters," Obi-Wan said sounding very tired as he kept walking. "I will brief you later. I promise. I would just like to go to my quarters right now and rest."
"A healer you need," Master Yoda pointed out. The elder master must have noticed as well as sensed his injuries like Anakin had. "To the Halls of Healing, you go. Or send a healer to your quarters, we can."
Obi-Wan shook his head. "I am fine. I don't need to see one. Just sore." Another lie. "But if you would please Masters, make sure Sasha returns to the temple safely. Send a gunship for her if you must. I want to make sure she is alright." That stunned them to silence for a moment. He looked like death, but he was worried about Sasha? What the hell happened?
"We can do that," Mace said with a nod. "But you still need to explain what has happened, Obi-Wan. This cannot wait."
Before he answered, they reached the apartment. Anakin had to agree with Mace. This could not wait. They all entered in silence into the dark living space as Obi-Wan walked over to his private chamber door. He didn't even bother to turn on the lights. So the corridor was mainly illuminating the room at the moment. Obi-Wan stopped in front of the door and glanced over his shoulder at the three of them.
"Duchess Satine is dead, killed by Darth Maul," he said softly before entering his quarters and closing the door before them.
The three of them stood there in shock at Obi-Wan had said. Maul? Did he just say Maul? Anakin felt his anger boil at the sound of the menace's name that had killed Master Qui-Gon and recently Master Gallia. However, he couldn't let his anger shine through. So he just frowned at the door. Mace and Yoda exchanged a sorrowful glance.
"This is troubling news," Mace admitted. "Did we have any intel that Maul was there?"
Yoda shook his head. "No, unbeknownst to us this information was." He sighed. "Best it might be, if kept between us this is," Yoda advised. "Spread the word we do not of Master Kenobi's involvement. At least not until all the details, we have."
"Do you understand, young Skywalker?' Mace asked Anakin directly.
Anakin was annoyed that they would assume he would spread the word like that, but he couldn't just keep this a secret from his wife or Ahsoka. But he could keep the details to the bare minimum as that is all he really knew. He nodded with a sigh. Mace and Yoda nodded.
"Leave him be, we should," Yoda said softly as he started toward the door. His gimmer stick the only thing making noise.
Mace followed him out, leaving Anakin behind to confront Obi-Wan. He reached up and knocked heavily on the door.
"Leave me alone, Anakin," Obi-Wan's voice rang from the other side. Still sounding tired, still sounding sad.
"Hey," Anakin started slowly. "Obi-Wan, let me in. I want to talk. I want to help!" No response. "Don't shut me out. This is serious. We need to talk! Are you okay? Talk to me!" Nothing. Anakin growled under his breath. He was getting frustrated by this. "Fine! Alright, whatever. I'll be back later, Obi-Wan. Just…" He took a deep breath to calm himself. "Just know that I'm sorry about Satine. I know how much you cared for her."
With that, Anakin left the apartment and headed toward the hanger bay. He wanted… no, needed to see his wife. He needed to see Padme.
After several long hours on the public frigate ride home, Sasha had finally returned to Coruscant. The frigate unloaded at the local spaceport that was hustling and bustling in the midday with traffic. Sasha moved through the crowd and onto the open platform. She scanned around for a gunship that could take her to the Jedi Temple. Republic gunships were known to occasionally drop off/pick up Jedi or Clones at the spaceport. So it shouldn't be hard to find one that can fly her back to the temple. After moving through the crowd that was too busy to even notice the Jedi was try to make her way through, Sasha reached the edge of the platform to find a single gunship waiting. In front of it, standing at attention, was two clones in shiny white armor. Rookies, she mused. Sasha approached the gunship and the clones stood at a straighter attention when they saw her approach.
"Commander," the both said in unison.
Sasha chuckled. "At ease," she told them. The two clones relaxed, but only slightly. "Is this gunship available to take me back to the Temple?"
"We have been given orders by General Windu to pick up Commander Monroe at this time and escort her back," the clone to the right said. "I assume you are her, Commander?"
Sasha nodded as she stared at them with raised eyebrows. She hadn't expected to have a transport waiting specifically for her. She expected only to hitch a ride at the most. "Yes, that's me," she said.
"Excellent," the one on the left said. "The General told us to return you to the Jedi Temple ASAP."
"Then let's get going," Sasha said as she gestured to gunship behind them.
The two clones turned to face each other, but didn't move further than that. Definitely rookies. Sasha walked between them and boarded the gunship. The followed shortly thereafter. Once on board, the gunship pulled away from the spaceport and into the busy Coruscant skies. As they flew, Sasha made another realization at to what the clones had said. They mentioned they were due to pick her up at that exact time. She realized that the first transports schedule had calculated for a layover on Mandalore, but it didn't stay for it while she had. A layover that was supposed to be a few hours and that was about exactly the amount of time she was there. However, the first immediately left so she had to take another that would get her to Coruscant the soonest. She didn't even realize that she had managed to perfectly line it up with the time she had given Master Windu originally. She had to admit she impressed herself there.
As they flew closer to the temple, Sasha felt a knot form in her stomach. The entire flight home she had been stuck in a daze. What she had witnessed on Mandalore almost felt like a dream now. It almost didn't feel real. Yet the knot in her stomach told her that it might have actually been real. However, she could sense her Master at the Temple. She could also sense his sadness, but not much else. He was blocking himself in the force, even to her and their bond. That made her frown. She knew that whether it was real or not, she could not let anyone know she was there. So turning that frown the other direction, Sasha prepared herself for her arrival to the Temple.
As it grew closer, Sasha glanced at the two Rookie clones.
"Thank you for the pick-up," she said after a long and silent flight.
The two exchanged a glance with each other, not really ready for such a praising statement. She smirked at them.
"You're welcome, Commander," one of them said.
"What are your names?" Sasha asked them.
"I'm KC," the one who spoke before said. "And this is Ty."
"It's a pleasure to meet both of you," Sasha said as the gunship was coming for a landing. "Hope we will cross paths in the future."
"Yes, sir," They both said with a smile in their voice.
Sasha gave them a nod and a wave farewell as she stepped off the gunship. As the gunship zipped away, Sasha spotted two familiar faces waiting for her closer to the entrance of the hanger that the landing platform jutted out from. Sasha approached them with a smile, but as she grew closer she noticed their serious expressions. The smile was gone in an instant.
"Welcome back," Cayden said as the slightest of smiles tried to tug at his lips, but didn't last.
"Hey, thanks. It's good to finally be back. But what's going on?" Sasha asked.
"Sasha…" Ahsoka started before hesitating on the next few words. "We just received word from Master Kenobi. Duchess Satine is dead."
And there it was. Sasha had been expecting that word might spread through the temple before the rest of the Republic as her Master would have told the Jedi Council and then someone would have passed it through the grapevine. However, even though Sasha was there to witness it happen, it still felt like a dream for the whole ride home. It didn't feel that way anymore. It was real. It did happen. The pain in her heart did exist. And it hit her like it a ton of bricks. Hearing Ahsoka say those words made Sasha feel the emotions she had been trying to suppress the whole way home like a tidal wave. Taking one uneasy step back then another, Sasha felt her knees go weak as she felt the tears rise.
"No…" her voice trailed off as her legs no longer wanted to hold her up.
She started to fall, but Cayden and Ahsoka caught her and kept her standing. Sasha placed a hand to her face as she lowered her chin and let the tears fall. Cayden and Ahsoka comforted her for a moment or two. Sasha had lost count. She then raised her chin to look at them, the tears still falling and staining her cheeks.
"Where is Master Kenobi?" Sasha asked with a worried tone.
Ahsoka and Cayden glanced at each other expecting the other to answer that question. Their lack of answer worried her more. Had something happened to him after he returned? And the fact he was blocking her made her more worried. She needed to find him now. Sasha moved past them with a shuddering breath and ran into the temple, leaving them behind. Her tears stopping for now. She ran as fast as she could toward the apartment/living quarters she shared with Obi-Wan. She knew fully well that he most likely didn't head toward the Halls of Healing. He probably wanted to be alone and not bothered by anyone. Anakin had told her once that Obi-Wan had done the exact same thing after they return from Geonosis at the start of the war. And for the two years now that Sasha had been with him, she knew fully well how often he would refuse immediate medical help when they would return from missions. She almost had to drag him there a few times while she herself was in no condition to even move. So their quarters had to be the first place to check.
As she ran through the temple, she had many staring at her as she passed them. Many were angered by her rudeness as she would run past them without as much of an 'excuse me'. Many also stared at her confused or saddened. She really didn't pay any of them too much mind as she grew closer to the room. Rounding the last corner she need to, Sasha came to a skidding halt part way down the corridor when she spotted Master Yoda and Master Mace Windu standing just outside the door to her quarters. She slowed her approach until she was back to a walking pace. Her breathing was uneven from all the running, but that didn't stop her.
"Masters," Sasha spoke up, pulling them both from their small conversation with each other.
"Padawan, glad to see you back we are," Master Yoda said as he slowly turned and looked up at her.
"Thank you, Master," Sasha said with a slight pant. "And thank you Master Windu for the gunship."
Windu nodded. "Master Kenobi requested it when he returned.'
"Is he here?" Sasha asked as she gestured to the door.
"Yes, but not speaking to anyone is he," Master Yoda said with a sorrow filled tone. "Even refusing healers, he is."
Sasha gulped silently. "Is he injured? Is he alright? What happened?" She rambled off to them.
"He returned from an unsanctioned mission to Mandalore a couple hours ago," Windu started. "We ran into him in the corridor and he looked…" The master paused. "Unwell. We asked him what happened and he told us that Duchess Satine was killed by Maul. He also asked for the gunship to pick you up when returned and disappeared back into his quarters. No one has been able to get him out since. We have no idea how injured he is, but he is far from alright."
The expression Master Windu made next almost made her heart stop. He looked at the door to their quarters with a heavily creased brow and a slight frown. He looked sad. She had never seen Master Windu like that ever! She had seen him smile and smirk on occasion. She had also seen him angered and upset beyond anyone's control. But most of the time he was the stoic Jedi Master. Sad was just too shocking to see on his face.
Sasha looked at the door. "Let me try and talk to him."
Neither Master stopped her. Sasha moved toward the door and opened it. The living space was dark as no lights were on. Even the screen on the window was lowered preventing the light from the midday sun to peek in. Sasha moved through the space without running into anything as the door slid shut behind her, leaving her alone in her apartment with her Master. She headed toward the door to his private chambers. As she approached, she noticed he had locked the door as the key pad was illuminated with a red bar that said locked. She knew the passcode to enter if it was ever locked in case of an emergency. But she didn't want to use it. Not yet at least. She wanted him to allow her to enter. She wasn't going to just barge into the room like Anakin might if he were there in her place. The thought then briefly crossed her mind of where Master Skywalker was. She couldn't sense him at the Temple, but he was on Coruscant. Where at this moment made her wonder for just a second and then it didn't matter.
Sasha placed a gentle knock on the door after a deep breath. There was no answer, but she could hear something shifting on the other side.
"Master… it's me," Sasha said loud enough for him to hear, but not loud enough that it could be heard by any listening ears outside their apartment. "Please… open the door." Again, no answer. "Obi-Wan…" She said breaking the formalities of Master and Apprentice. "I heard about Satine… I'm so sorry." Then her tears returned as she rested her head against the door. "Please let me in. Please talk to me…" Again, nothing. "She was my friend too. I want… no, I need to know what happened. Please…" her voice trailed off as she felt a sob build up. She pushed it down as she took a couple of breaths. "Obi-Wan… please open the door. Talk to me." Nothing.
Sasha wanted to punch the door and yell at him to let her in. Even though she had been there. Even though she had seen what he had seen. Experienced what he had experienced even if it was from a different point of view. Sasha knew how much he was falling apart at the seams. How much pain his heart was in. She knew he loved Satine. She knew he was weeping for her. She needed to be there for him. She needed to comfort him. He was her Master, but he was also her brother, her friend, and like a father to her. She was not going to let him go through this alone.
"Please…" She begged one last time. "Open the door."
Suddenly, the control panel beeped as the lock was removed. Sasha backed away from the door and watched as it slid open. It opened to reveal an empty doorway and a pitch black room. Just like the living area, the screen was down and blocking out the light. Sasha slowly stepped into the room and looked around as the door slid shut. His bed was still neatly made and the rest of the furniture remained untouched. She then could make out his form on the ground with his back up against the bed. His legs were out before him and his head hung low. He almost looked dead or unconscious in that position, but the fact he opened the door with force told her he was neither of those things. Sasha slowly approached him and noticed he was still in the red and black armor she had seen him wearing on Mandalore. He hadn't bother to change his clothes. He must have been sitting there for a while. Once she was close enough, she pointed to the spot next to him.
"May I?" she asked softly.
Not raising his head to look at her, he nodded. Sasha sat down on the floor with her back against the bed, next to Obi-Wan. She sat with her legs gathered to her chest, arms wrapped around them. They sat there in silence for a very long time before Sasha finally broke it.
"Are you okay?" she asked, her voice breaking a little.
Obi-Wan didn't answer her immediately, but when he did, his voice was so hoarse. "No." was all he said. She guessed that he didn't give that answer to anyone else as he sounded so defeated when he did say it.
Sasha looked at him. "Tell me. What happened?"
Obi-Wan moved for the first time since Sasha entered the room. He pulled his legs sluggishly toward his chest. She notice him wince and grimace with every single movement as his injuries that he had gotten on Mandalore were still unhealed. He was refusing healers after all. Once his legs were up, he wrapped his arms around them and laid his forehead down on the top of his armored knees.
"I received a call from the Duch… from Satine," he spoke so quietly that if there was any other sound in that room, she wouldn't have heard him. She remained quiet to let him continue. "She was in need of help. The Death Watch had finally taken over Mandalore. I wanted to go after her, but Master Yoda refused. I disobeyed and snuck out in my garb from being Rako Hardeen, barrowed the Twilight from Anakin, and went to help her."
Sasha remembered when he pretended to be that bounty hunter. She remembered that the council had given him permission to tell her, but not Anakin that he was going to fake his own death in order to go undercover to find out the truth behind a plot to kidnap the Chancellor. The reason for that was because she had already lost one Master during this war, if she found out she lost another it would have gone poorly as it does not look good to anyone if the same padawan loses both of her Masters. It also would have not gone well for her emotional or mentally as she would have fallen apart. Or he assumed she would have. So he told her about it and then proceeded to go on with the plan of faking his own death. Sasha thankfully was the perfect actress for that as she played her role so well that even Anakin believed her in her state of grieving. Once Obi-Wan had returned from his mission to save the Chancellor, she then revealed that she knew to Anakin. He was very upset with both of them and avoided them both for a few days. It took a lot of apologizing and food to get him to come around.
Obi-Wan continued. "When I arrived, I took this armor off of one of the members that was on the platform. I then snuck into the city and toward the prisons. When I got there, I saved Satine and we hurried back to the Twilight. But we were shot down." He clenched his hands into fists. "When I got up from the wreckage I saw who had shot us down…" He paused for a long time. "It was Maul and his apprentice Savage." There was so much bile and hatred behind the names as he said them. It made her shudder. "They took me to a cell, tortured me, and took Satine to the palace. Soon I was brought to the palace where I confronted Maul. He then told me he wanted me to suffer as he had suffered. I expected to lose a limb or two, but…" He choked up and pulled his body in tighter. "That monster… he killed her. He killed Satine." Sasha could feel it again. The brush with the dark side from him. It was like poison. But instead of being furious or wanting revenge, he broke down.
Sasha's heart broke as she heard his sobs. His body shook from the sobs. Sasha's tears fell as she stared at him.
"I'm sorry… I'm so sorry… I should have been there… I should have helped you," Sasha rambled as she moved onto her knees and faced him directly.
He didn't answer, but she didn't need him too. However, she didn't expect him to do what he did next. He dropped his arms and legs, and then threw himself into her arms. Sasha was startled by the gesture. She had done this exact thing to him a few times so she could receive comfort from him. It never happened the other way around. Sasha slowly wrapped her arms around him and held him close to her. She could feel his tears soaking her tunic. She then lowered her own head and cried against his shoulder pauldron. He wrapped his arms around her, and they cried together.
*grabs tissue and blows nose* Review please! It was just so sad!
